Oregon Federation News
March 2015

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 21 March 2015
President's Corner

Greetings from Benbrook, Texas, just SW of Fort Worth. Kathy and I took off on a road trip the 11th of February. We drove down to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, for a few days. While there we went to a square dance to see if there was anything different or unusual about their dance. I hate to say, but it was just a typical dance. We hope to go to a couple of dances in the Fort Worth area to see if they do anything different to make their dances more fun and enjoyable. From here we will go down to Gainsville, Florida, for a couple weeks. We are looking forward to doing some dancing there. I will let you know in the next month's OFN if we find anything exciting. Be Bold, Try Something Different.

Editor's Note

We have just started the process of handling refunds for those people who had unfilled subscriptions to the printed OFN. All subscribers should be receiving a postcard shortly describing how much of their subscription remains, with instructions on how to request a check. Because of the overhead of processing a whole bunch of small checks, we are asking that those with less than a year remaining consider leaving that amount in the Federation as a donation towards our future expenses.

At the OFN table at Mid-Winter, we had a document explaining how to get your information into the OFN. A reprint of that document is available for download here.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

The Federation is pleased to announce that the 2015 Randall Award, the highest honor presented by the Oregon Federation, was presented at Mid-Winter Festival to Paul and Dotty Swenson of the Tualatin Valley Council.

The Randall Award is preseted to a couple or individual who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to square dancing and to square dancers, and the Swensons certainly meet those requirements. Our congratulations!

Oregon's 2015 Summer Festival will be held at the Klamath County Fairgrounds in Klamath Falls, July 17 to 19, 2015.

In March we're looking forward to our coast trip at Gleneden Beach Community Club and want to mention again that all are welcome! We're dancing both Friday and Saturday nights, March 13 and 14. This has been a longstanding tradition for the Corvallis Squares. It's been fun to have visitors at this dance in past years, including folks from the former Toledo 49ers.

Our mainstream lessons are scheduled to wrap up at the end of February. Both the angels and students have had a fun time laughing and dancing together on Monday nights since the end of September when lessons started. We're grateful to Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell for their capable instruction and coaching! Karen

After a wonderful Mid-Winter Festival, we are back in the swing of things. We had a very nice New Years Eve dance with a great lasagna dinner. A very successful Chili dinner dance and two more fun dances are planned for February. We are also going to try a new dancers class in February and will let everyone know how it turns out.

Be sure to visit our club on the first and third Fridays of the month for great dancing with Bruce Lowther calling and myself cueing. You can find our flyers posted right here in the on-line OFN. Sandy

Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares concluded 2014 with a lovely Christmas dance. Then they saw the New Year in with their new dancer dance on January 4. It was well attended with over six squares and everyone enjoyed dancing. Then on January 9, seven of the Willamette Squares members attended Silver City Squares' new dancer baked potato dance.

Willamette Squares went dark on Saturday, January 24, to support the Mid-Winter Festival. A number of Willamette Squares members attended the festival and as can be expected, had a great time! Our club will be back on schedule for February and are looking forward to their next dance, their sweetheart dance. They'll be sure to be dancing their hearts out! Won't you please join us on the fourth Saturday of each month? Jodee Howard

Our council dance (Jan 31) had about eight squares -- a big improvement. Only four were dancing at any one time, but we recognize many go to dances for the social aspect. The Wild Cards were calling (although only KC Curtis was actually billed) and Helen Halley cued. Oaky Doaks served refreshments -- great publicity for them.

The background talk is that some of us wonder if caller run clubs are the future of square dancing. With fewer dancers wanting to get involved, the caller run clubs may be the viable future of square dancing. But, even today, there are caller run clubs starting up, irrespective of the fact there are not enough dancers left to populate the clubs we already have (based upon four squares needed to pay expenses.) Then, too, caller run clubs (for profit clubs) have their own disadvantages for dancers.

Help Wanted: We still need a Webmaster, Special Events Chairman and Membership Chairman. Especially, if you've felt "shut out" at the club level, why not explore the council level? I did, many years ago, and I'm still here.

Our "benefit dance" for Jim Hattrick (January 14) resulted in $492 being sent to Jim. However, it wasn't technically a benefit dance, wherein everything was donated. We merely gave the door proceeds to Jim and paid the caller, cuer and rent from club funds. Six squares came and it was a lot of fun.

Our own Jack Grauer was honored at the Evergreen Council dance January 31st. 13 squares showed up. He also has a lifetime complimentary door pass to our own club. He has been dancing for 46 years. Speaking as Jack's home club, we are very proud of him.

Mary Nelson also has a lifetime complimentary pass to our club. She's been our member for 22 years, and helps clean up after every dance.

Our Feb 21st dance was one of those crazy dances where there were more gent's than ladies. Among our guests, we had Don from Missoula, Debbie from Rochester and Craig from Lola, Montana. They were here as part of a Mid-Winter warm-up.

Greetings from the Bees. It is amazing how quickly this dancing season is going. I am writing this after our Sweetheart dance. We had a visitation from R Square D's and it was a great dance. We look forward to visiting them to get our banner back. Our club will be dark on 2/21 because the Grange is rented for a clogging event so it gives us am opportunity for a Mystery trip. March brings one of our most fun events - the Pie eating contest. There will be lots of pie for the contest and lots of pie for the break. Come and eat pie. Will your named go on the Winners plaque?

All six of our Mainstream students and better than half our Club Angels enjoyed the excitement of Mid-Winter Festival in Albany, January 23-25th. Most of our Club members danced to Jet Roberts and Peter Gomez for the first time - excellent choices. We greatly appreciate all the time, energy and restless nights that go into organizing this event; all your hard work grows our square dance community and we thank you.

Chaps hosted the "Blast-from-the-Past" Tri-council TROPHY dance on February 6th. Eighty people attended!! Eight squares hit the floor dancing and Tri-Squares (Tigard club) won the Trophy with 52% of their membership in attendance…what an amazing turn-out. Oaky Doaks get an honorable mention with 24% membership attendance. Scott Zinser, our caller, promoted the theme with the entire front of his vest covered in (retired and existing) Club badges and dangles. Congrats to Tri-Squares; we look forward to your future Trophy-hosted dance.

We hope that you just come dance with us and support Scott Zinser and Jackie Gale, caller/cuer at our 1st Friday, March 6th dance. March 20th is Spring Equinox and our "Spring Fling" dance with Tim Kane calling and Ray Waltz cueing - please join us as we jump into new weather.

Happy Hoppers - Link
It was a completely unexpected bonus to have Jim Hattrick show up during our Monday night lessons on February 2. His doctor told him to get out and do things as long as he feels up to it. Jim called a plus tip including a duet singing call with Craig Abercrombie. He's still got medical trouble, but it was great to have him join us for a short time!

The Hoppers were sad to hear that our friend, Dean Woods, passed away in December. While Dean wasn't an official member of the Happy Hoppers, he was a fixture, as an angel at our Monday night lessons. Whenever Jim would call the move "Load the Boat" during the plus lessons, Dean would surreptitiously pull a wooden whistle out from his pocket and give it a couple of blows: "Toot-toot". Now, in Dean's absence, when that move is called, most of the Hoppers give it a verbal "Toot-toot". Whenever I hear that, I think of Dean.

Our member, Melissa James, created a beautiful quilted bedspread and donated it to be raffled for the benefit of Jim and Judy Hattrick, to help them deal with Jim's medical situation. $1,001.00 was raised for this worthy cause! When the final raffle drawing took place, at the Mid-Winter Festival, the Hoppers were pleased to find out that the winner was another of our members, Mary Fulton. Thank you Melissa, for your excellent donation, and congratulations to you, Mary, for your good fortune!

Our next club dine-out will be the evening of February 25th at Chinese Gardens, 3218 NE 2nd Ave, Camas, WA. We hope you can join us for some great food and fellowship.

We are continuing with the monthly rotation for our Monday evening square dance lessons, with Craig Abercrombie presiding in Jim's absence. Through April, we encourage beginning dancers to start introductory lessons on the first Monday of each month at 7:30. Plus lessons start at 6:30, Basic 1 at 7:30, Basic 2 at 8:45, and Mainstream from 9:15 through 9:45.

We will be having a used clothing sale on March 23, during our regular Monday lesson time. This is a great way to get you and your mate looking spiffy in traditional square dance attire without breaking the bank.

As always, we have Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00.

Both of our March dances will promote food collection for benefit of the North County Food Bank. These folks do excellent work! Their motto is "Knocking the Edge off Hunger". The Happy Hoppers are pleased to do what we can to help. We ask that you bring some non-perishable food donations with you when you attend our dances on March 7th and 21st.

Ladies - it is our turn to 'lead'! Be inspired by Li'l Abner and come dressed to invite the men to dance at the Oaky Doaks "Sadie Hawkins Dance" on March 7. It is our first Saturday dance, so in addition to rounds from 7 until 7:50pm, we will have a Plus mini-teach.

And two weeks later (March 21), bring carrots and apples or bags of sweet feed and learn about the Horse Rescue program one of our members supports. We won't be horsing around of course, we'll be dancing.

The 5th Friday PAC dance saw the launch of our 55th Anniversary Dance - Elvis "Fun in Acapulco" Dance. Scott Coon, an Elvis Tribute Artist and Square Dance Caller from Seattle will headline the festivities. Starting at 4:30 pm with a Floor Show, followed by a Mexican meal and then we will be dancing the night away. Tickets are available from members. $7 for either the Floor Show or the Dance and $10 for the entire evening. So, if you remember Elvis in the "Fun in Acapulco" movie, it will be a chance to dance down memory lane. And - if not, then a chance to 'meet' him up close.

When you are out and about in the next weeks, watch for the Silverton youth square dancers. They are fundraising for their planned trip to the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival in Langley, BC in early May. Perhaps you'll be able to head out to Waldo Hills on the 8th of March between 2 and 4 for their fundraising dance and see them strut their stuff.

Everyone's Irish this month! Wear some green and do your best Plus jig down to the Winona Grange on Friday the 13th, where Lady Luck will smile on us as we celebrate St. Paddy's Day a wee bit early. Jeanine will have us going Round in circles, and Scott always keeps us spinning through the squares!

As our name implies, the Recycles are the "greenest" club in the state and we're continuing to collect aluminum tabs from drink & food cans. Your efforts help Ronald McDonald House to provide needed services for families with hospitalized children; many thanks to our friends who faithfully bring in contributions!

Please bring your friends to our dances with you, so we can continue having fun together!

Hello everyone. What a great time we had at Mid-Winter Festival. A Great big thank you to George and Patty Herman, along with their committee for a great festival. Our youngest member, Cheyenne Hutchins--I think she's 12--even got up on stage in the new dancers hall with Chuck Garner to call a tip. Keep going Cheyenne. You are going to give him and the other callers a run for their money.

On another note, we have graduated our mainstream class with 3/4 of them joining our club. Keep dancing to other callers--this only strengthens your dancing.

At our last membership meeting we voted to go dark for the July and August, and come back with a bang in September with lessons and another year of dancing. During March, April, May and June we have Chuck Garner calling our 2nd Saturday dances, and Darrell Kalmbach calling our 4th Saturday dances. What a great combination of callers who will challenge us and our guests to an evening of fun and entertaining dances. As usual, Dorothy Lowder is our cuer. See our website www.www.silverstarssquaredance.org to see a list of our callers and themes. Plus dancing is from 7-8, and mainstream dancing from 8-10.

Don't forget our 35th Anniversary dance coming up. We formed in the mid 80's so we are having an 80's theme dance. Get those legwarmers out, and don't forget the neon colors and the big hair.

Happy dancing everyone.

Tualatin Valley Council
The TVC extends congratulations to Paul and Dottie Swenson for winning the Oregon Federation Randall Award for 2015, the state's highest recognition of service to square dancing. This the award is intended to honor those dancers who have done great service for the Oregon Federation and for square dancing in Oregon, and especially those who work behind the scenes where recognition is so rare. The TVC is proud to have them as members of our Council.

Each year the Tualatin Valley Council holds a Presidents Appreciation Potluck to recognize current and past club presidents as well as to present a special award to persons who have made significant contributions in our dance community. This "TVC Recognition Award" was presented to Dale & Kathy Worthington, members of the Hayshakers. They were recognized for their commitment to and leadership of the square dance community. They have held multiple offices in their club, the Sunset and Tualatin Valley Councils, and with the Oregon Federation at the State level. Kathy is currently the TVC State Delegate and Dale is the president of the Oregon Federation. At the National level, this couple served on the 2005 National Convention and chaired the Vendor Hospitality for the 2012 Convention. With a standing ovation they were presented an engraved plaque and gold bars by Gary Clark, Council President.

The TVC helped dancers recover from The Mid Winter Festival with our Mid Winter Rebound Dance which featured the calling of Darrell Kalmbach and cueing of Debbie Combs. Sixty six dancers enjoyed this high energy fifth Saturday dance. The TriSquares won the TVC banner for having the highest percentage of their club in attendance.

Eager Beavers - Link
The founders and supporters of square dance everywhere, Dottie and Paul Swenson, were honored and deservedly so, with the Randall Award at Midwinter. They have been involved in dance for over 43 years and were the founders of the Eager Beavers (Dottie was the original caller) at the Elsie Stuhr Center 40 years ago. Midwinter was popular with the Eager Beavers with about twenty attending and enjoying dancing to a new-to-us caller, Jet Roberts, from Antelope, California.

I learned the Resale Shop did well which is a good thing. It is run by volunteers and the profits benefit the state organization as well youth and new dancers who can pick up free outfits that have been donated to the shop but not sold. Everyone benefits so next year bring in the outfits you do not wear anymore.

March means St. Patrick's; do your "Wearing of the Green" to our dance on March 16th.

Spring begins March 20th so I will expect you to wear spring flowers March 23rd.

All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00-3:15 p.m. (rounds from 1 to 1:30) at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info.

Hoedowners - Link
The Hoedowners' Black and White Sparkle Dance was certainly an elegant way to start the New Year. The temperatures may have been mild but inside we were celebrating the sparkle of frost and snow. The ballroom's lights were dimmed while a myriad of twinkling lights reflecting off dozens of glass balls. Our silhouette dancers were outfitted in their formal best and the dining room was glittering with silver table clothes and table runners. Thank you to all the dancers whose attire matched the black and white, shine and shimmer of the evening.

It was a wonderful weekend in Albany this year at the Mid-Winter Festival; Dance, Dance, Dance. We want to recognize Mike and Sally Duyck who were chair people of the TVC Visitation Committee. We thoroughly enjoyed Randy Lewis and Debbie Olson's performance of a lovely waltz to "Valentine's Day" at the Showcase of Rounds. Daryl was busy this year calling in all three halls, multiple times and a thank you to Bob and Nancy Oswald and Clay and Kelly McCaw for carrying our banner in the Grand March. We were delighted to see so many of our new dancers joining the fun.

Our social committee had several Hoedowner activities planned. We had large groups for our diners Friday and Saturday nights. Robert Mahler and Beth Procassini deserve hugs and cheers for hosting the post party festivities both nights and an amazing 42 Hoedowners gathered for our club photo. Memories made, friendships strengthened, laughter, laughter, laughter; who could ask for more?!

What's up with the Hoedowners at the Aloha Grange in March? On the 14th we're breaking out the pedal pushers and lettermen's jackets for our Rock n' Roll Dance and on the 28th we'll be having a Spring Fling. Join us as we usher in the new season.

The Start of the New Year always brings excitement for the time ahead. This year is no different and is starting off with a renewed hope for us to bring the excitement of Square Dancing to new dancers young and old alike.

R Square D had their Snowflake Frolic on January 9th with everyone coming in from the cold to warm up to the calling of Craig Abercrombie. He heated up 4 squares of dancers in record time. It was followed by many different kinds of winter warming soups and good fellowship.

Our club meeting was hosted by Cliff and Charlotte Houghtlen on January 19th, at the Kelso Senior Center followed by some tasty pecan cinnamon rolls. Thank you Sandra Holderby for filling in for Dick Sims, our president, while he is away on vacation.

March starts us off with a B51 dance on March 13th with guest caller Richard Lane and kicking it up to the oldies with a 50s/60s dance on the 28th. It's always a good time, come join us.

Our square dance lessons are ongoing and we have several "already have danced before" couples which is good. We have a dozen students and Mike Stout our caller and instructor is doing a good job of moving right along, giving them a lot of moves. The students are doing well, keeping up, and enjoying the lessons too. We are hoping to finish lessons in 16-weeks and end up having several graduates that can dance well. Our youngest student is only 5-years old and she is doing well. Three of her sisters already are dancing so she wants to learn too.

Our Plus Promenaders dance is going well on the first and third Thursdays; Intermediate level Pre-Rounds at 7:00 until 7:30; the Plus dance from 7:30 until 9:30, and a break afterwards. Darrell Kalmbach is calling and Ken Pratt is cueing. All you Plus dancers come visit us sometime soon.

We want to invite all you dancers to come to our dances. The Sunset Promenaders have a Mainstream dance on the first and third Saturdays of the month with Mike (Julie) Stout calling, and Ken (Dianne) Pratt cueing at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall, 267 E. Main St. We have Intermediate Pre-Rounds from 7:30 until 8:00 and Mainstream dance 8:00 to 10:00 with a break afterwards. There is street parking and also across the street is the Premier Community Bank to use for additional parking.

The Holidays are a busy time, lots of fun but maybe too busy; so now we can settle down and enjoy a more leisurely schedule of dances, etc.

God bless you, and hope to see you across the square soon.

Toe Draggers - Link
We sincerely enjoyed dancing with new and old friends at Mid-Winter Festival in January. The Toe Draggers were so proud of KC (Linda) Curtis in KC's fun calling and Bev and (Harlan) using their special cueing skills to organize and choreograph a round dance for the "Show Case of Rounds". Then a week later, at our own Kinton Grange, was the TVC Rebound Dance called by Darrell (Erin) Kalmbach and cued by Debbie Combs. What a relaxed and fun ending to a great month of dancing.

We have been enjoying our tours through different countries around the world with the Toes at each month's dances. February has been fun dancing, while touring through Italy ending with a delicious Italian spaghetti dinner, and topping it off with chocolate desserts for the break. Yum!!! We have been having delicious dinner meals before special dances and outstanding snacks at our breaks all year. We dance off the calories. In March we are looking forward to dancing through Ireland and maybe learning an Irish Jig. Our Irish Rubber Ducky Dance on the 20th should bring many smiles. Come and join us, we promise some fun times.

Put on your smiles and dancing shoes and join our new dancers at our Jamboree Sunday, March 15th, 1:30 - 3:30, Aloha Grange, Chuck Garner calling. We also hope to see you at our dances March 7th and 21st.

Basics and Mainstream classes started January 13th and we have 13 students. It is fun to see them master the moves and grow in confidence.

One of our members, Vicki Fotheringham, is battling cancer. As a fundraiser for the club, and as a personal goal, Vicki has challenged us to pledge money for each dance she is able to attend from now until June. Her oncologist definitely sees a difference in Vicki's numbers when she is dancing, and Vicki feels it as well. Thanks to all who are contributing.

The two January dances were fun, especially since our Plus graduates joined us on the floor, along with guests from Rosetown Ramblers, Hoedowners, Wave Steppers, and Tri-Squares.

The Wave Steppers are dark over the winter, but we'll be having classes; a new round of square dance classes, taught by caller Joe Wrabek, started Wed., Jan. 28th, at the Tillamook Elks Lodge. As last year, the classes are free; the Elks are letting us use the hall free of charge.

Our 2015 dance schedule starts in May. We'll be dancing the second Saturday of the month on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall. About two-thirds of the big City Hall's second story is a dance floor, built in the 1940s for the old Firemen's Balls; there have apparently been square dances there ever since the building was built.

May 9th will be our New Dancers Dance, with caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel. June 13th, we'll have Mark Wheeler calling, and either line dancing with Gwen or round dancing with cuer Connie Clark. On July 11th, George Clark will be calling and cueing, and on August 8th, caller and cuer will be Harvey Hunsucker. The September 14th and October 10th dances will have club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel.

Umpqua Area Council
Umpqua Area Council hosted our annual New Dancers Dance January 11th in the afternoon. Chuck Simpkins, instructor for the mainstream students, called at the dance which was well attended by both new students and experienced dancers. Phil Ramey also called a tip during the dance which was a treat for the students to be able to dance to a caller who was new to them.

The beginning of January found the Christmas decorations quickly packed away at the Barn and the snowman and snowflakes appeared just in time for the Poor Man's Snowman Dance. Our Snowman Dance is usually held the 3rd Saturday in January but this year in "morphed" into being tagged the Poor Man's Snowman Dance because our admission charge was only $1.00. Roger Putzler treated us to a fun night and all six squares had a fabulous evening of dancing. Our new students were introduced to most of the mainstream calls in time for Midwinter so they were able to head for Albany with confidence and enthusiasm. Thirty eight dancers, from the Buckeroo and Timber 8 Clubs, made the trip to Albany for the festival and from all reports everyone had a great time. We are looking forward to our potluck and graduation night coming up in February. Thanks to the Midwinter Festival volunteers who made the week-end a success! The styling workshop deserves extra "kudos" for showing us some new moves with fancy twirls. Who says you can't teach an old dog a new trick?
