We have a good set of articles this month, including two of those obituaries that seem to be coming more and more often, plus a wrap-up of the Central Oregon Round-up.

Remember to double-check your lesson information as we go into the September lesson season.

The Interstate Highlander Council thanks everyone who participated in the 2015 Summer Festival. We appreciate your support. Those of you who missed it really did miss a good time. Our final report will be ready by the September State meeting. Although we didn't get as large a turn out as we hoped we should have enough to pay all the bills and run a good recruitment this Fall. All lost and found items have been distributed except for a hand towel and sunglasses. If you left these items please contact us so we can return them to you.

The September Federation meeting will be held at the Milwaukie Community Center the weekend of September 19 and 20. Come join the PAC and the River City Dancers as they host a special dance to welcome the outgoing and incoming Federation officers.

Mid-Winter Festival 2016 will be rolling in January 29 to 31, 2016, in Albany, Oregon. It's not too early to nail down your hotel reservations. They go quickly. The festival web site will be up and running pretty quickly at www.midwinterfestival.com/.

Oregon's 2016 Summer Festival will be held at the Seaside Convention Center, July 29 to 31, 2016. Stay tuned for more information.

By the time you read this, the Milton-Freewater Muddy Frogs will have hosted a dance at Yantis Park in Milton-Freewater on August 16 and a 2018 Washington State Festival meeting, Blue Mountain Council meeting, dance and barbeque on August 29, also at Yantis Park.

Our September activities include dancing on our float in the Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days parade on

Saturday, the 5th, and sponsoring the Wallowa Mountain Rendezvous at Wallowa Lake near Joseph, OR the weekend of the 11th to 13th. Bill and Neva Reid will be calling and cueing both events, with Roger Putzler being a featured caller at the Rendezvous. If you have never attended the Rendezvous, you have missed a great time, with lots of atmosphere provided by the building in which we dance. It was built in 1918 and is probably like nowhere you have ever danced before! Those of you who have danced there know what I mean! The lake setting is fabulous to boot. Wallowa Lake is one of the premier vacation spots in Oregon. Hope to see you there!

For the love of square dancing,

After moving to Bend this winter, Dave and I just attended our first ever Central Oregon Round Up in Sisters. The friendliness, food, decorations and dancing were truly special! Our feet hurt and our tails were dragging at the end--definitely the sign of a successful dance event, don't you think? What a great show by members of all the Central Oregon square and round dance clubs! A big cowboy yell to all the CORU committee members who put this weekend together. Can't wait 'til next August to do it again!

Our annual spaghetti dinner kicks off the first dance in September on the 5th with Craig Ambercrombie calling and cuing. On the 19th we'll be dancing to Ron Bliven and Carol Bro.

Let's dance!

We are dark September 5 as that is Labor Day weekend. We look forward to a new dance season with Roger Puztler as our caller. Roger calls at least once a month. We dance the first and third Saturdays in Hall A at Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. AC and cushioned wood floors.

New classes will being October 6. Please plan on bringing a friend or two. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays. Roger Putzler is the teacher. Having class twice a week is proving to help with retention and finishing earlier than usual. People are really ready for Mid-Winter with this format.

Keep on Dancing!

We had a good-sized crowd when Jim Voll called on July 10th - between five and six squares. Jackie Gale cued her usual best and we all enjoyed the Red, White and Blue Pie and Ice Cream Social.

Lennie Ludiker and Christina Corelli called and cued our July 24th dance.

We look forward to our September dances. On the 11th, Terry Halley will call the squares and Jackie Gale will cue the rounds.

September 11th will be our Back to School Sock Hop with George Hermann calling and Jackie Gale cuing.

We are getting ready for the big Recruitment Dance August 22. That's a Saturday. We usually dance Sundays, but we'll be dark August 23. The August 22 dance is free to new dancers and is a "Welcome to Square Dance" fun day. We'll have a huge potluck for which we are famous. This is a great opportunity to bring people to witness just how much fun square dancing is. Christina Corelli will be on hand to cue a round or two and get folks involved in a line dance or mixer.

National caller Kris Jensen from Albuquerque, New Mexico is calling this special dance. She's GREAT!

The schedule for the Recruitment Dance is

$7, free to new dancers. This is a great chance to bring prospective dancers so they can see just how much fun we have!

This dance will be in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda, Springfield, OR 97477. Dress is casual. The hall is air conditioned and has a cushioned wood floor.

The first Sunday in September will be geared to new people. Bring your friends! 5:30 on Sunday.

Want floor time? Join us Sundays at 5:30 at the hall in Springfield, Hall A. Tim calls and teaches all levels. Something for everyone! Please call David at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 as there may be a slim chance we are not dancing. You may also call Christina and Kirby at 541-688-0711 as they are members and always attend when they are home.

Happy Dancing!

The Cherry City Cloggers and the Rhythm Rockers have been very busy. You may have seen us at World Beat, County fairs, or having lots of fun at dance night. We have our general meeting shortly and will have new officers. After the meeting, we are headed to Keizer River Festival.

We are looking forward to classes starting the second week in Sept. We have a nice list of in-coming new members. The Clog Hoppers are doing great. We are learning new songs now and then and having fun dancing the ones we know. Some of us are looking forward to the trip to Tacoma for the big event there. The Kick Off is in its 26th (?) year. Our amazing instructors will be teaching dance numbers and we will have three days of great dancing from beginner to advanced. We will be double toe dancing. Double Toe Stomp, Joanie

Note: I am looking for any of the other dancers that went in 1978 with Marty and Gloria Firstenburg to Wizard Island, in Crater Lake. There were about 10 of us who got a permit to go to the island and dance on the dock. At that time, it was not open to the public. I hope there are a few of them reading this. I would like to get as many as we can to do a reunion. meeting at Diamond Lake Festival and then doing a return trip to the island. I know there have been other groups going to the island to dance, but these 10 people were the first to dance on the island in 1978. Anyone out there please let me know as it would be great for a 40 year reunion. Marty and Gloria will be missed, but maybe we can find a caller who might do the calling for us. Joanie

Corvallis Squares - Link
The Corvallis Squares has had opportunities for a couple of demo dances to raise awareness of square dancing and to show how much fun we have. We danced at the Benton County Fair on a super hot day, and Roger Putzler called. In September we plan to dance at the Farmer's Market and at the Corvallis Fall Festival.

Our lessons will start on Monday evenings, beginning Sept. 28. Bruce Lowther will instruct our class.

Our club enjoyed a potluck and meeting at the Hendersons' in August, as we met and geared up for the fall. Our new presidents, Ken and Betty Iverson, are at the helm. We look forward to kicking off the dance season on Sept. 12! Karen

Lebanon Square Circlers - Link
Summer is quickly flying by, but it seems like only yesterday that the Lebanon club celebrated its 66th Annual Strawberry Festival Dances and Weekend. It all began on Thursday evening, June 4 when we gathered to have a potluck and decorate the float for the parade on Saturday morning. The theme this year was "Strawberry All Stars". Randi Baker had created red, white, and blue streamer stars to be attached to the float along with our strawberry dancers. On Friday the Senior Center hall was decorated, RV's arrived, and there was another potluck prior to the Trails End Dance that evening with callers and cuers from the floor. Saturday was highlighted by the parade and the Festival Dance in the evening. Randy Dibble called and Jackie Gale cued. It was a glorious dance with visitors from over 12 different clubs and also from a Toe Draggers Mystery trip. Of course, strawberry shortcake was served at the break time. We had a truly successful Silent Auction, chaired by Kaynor Heineck, and an Experienced Clothing Sale, chaired by Marianne Cawrse. The weekend was climaxed with an "all-you-can eat" pancake breakfast on Sunday. All in all, it was a dynamite celebration.

On June 28, Nick and Kaynor Heineck hosted a garden and croquet party/potluck at their home followed by our June club meeting. It was great fun. On August 8, club members did their annual "Clean-up" of the IOOF facility as a part of the club responsibility for dancing there.

Bill and Charlotte Jeskey have invited square dancers to their home for a party/potluck, fun and games on Sunday, August 23. Also, our club will be gathering at Frank and Marianne Cawrse's farm over Labor Day weekend.

Our club has scheduled its mainstream classes to begin on September 20 at 6:30 PM at the IOOF Hall. Plus and A1 will also begin on that Sunday: Plus at 3:00 PM and A1 at 4:30 PM. Charlotte Jeskey will be the instructor. See you in a square! Marilyn

The club has finished mambo and is now working through six weeks of Bolero workshops to update moves that we slack off when dancing.

The North Pole Irregulars (was supposed to be Misfits) made an appearance at Summer Festival Round Dance showcase. We enjoyed our performance and dressed silly to go with it.

We are contemplating our fall lesson plan and will post it as soon as we make a decision. Stay tuned. We have also completed the 90 day review for our new instructor, Cheryl Manley. She is doing well.

We hope you will take some time to join us on Thursdays at 6:30 for dancing, 7:30 for lessons, and 8:30 for more dancing. This schedule seems to be working for the majority of those dancers who attend our club. Marilyn Schmit

Salem Swingin' Stars has continued dancing all summer long in our air conditioned hall! We had a great turnout for our July 3 Independence Day Celebration. Our third Friday dance was also well attended even though many of our club members were in Klamath Falls at Summer Festival. A big thank you to all of the clubs that came out and danced at our 5th Friday Plus Dance. We had 31 guests from 10 different clubs. WOW!

On August 3, Nancy Donaldson, our VP, organized a visitation to the Golden Squares Pajama Dance. It was great fun.

We danced through August and are looking forward to September! Look for the Flyer for our Annual Corn & Cluck Dance on September 18. Corn on the cob and chicken, plus other goodies will be served at 6:30 pm. For only $8.00; you can feast and dance to Randy Dibble with Jeanine Norden cueing.

We dance on the first and third Fridays of the month. If there is a 5th Friday we have a Plus dance with Advance levels. Keep dancing and hope to see you soon!! Sheila Machado

Summer has been fairly quiet for us with just a club meeting. Planning for lessons is going on with our lessons starting on September 8.

We are dancing in the Homer Davenport Parade again in August. There is a big difference for us from the last couple of years as we do not have a trailer this year. We are square dancing the parade on foot and Leonard has to come up with some choreography to be able to do that. Most of our adults and youth guys are not joining us for this, so we will be having a square of mostly youth girls. Mom has told three of us girls that we will be guys for the parade and to dress for the boy positions. Petrina Buchheit

Willamette Squares enjoyed their "Fun in the Sun" dance. The dance was aptly named since the weather has been on the "sunny" side. Hot weather does not deter square dancers from dancing! Georgette had the Salem Square Dance Center decorated for the occasion. Everyone had a good time dancing the summer night away!

Willamette Squares also enjoyed their annual summer picnic, a mix of good food and good dancing!

Willamette Squares is proud to announce the election of Georgette Hagerman for a one year term as President to the Mid-Willamette Area Council. Things are getting back to normal, and we invite you all to come to our meeting Sept 21. Since we don’t meet over the summer, we will have much to discuss.

One of the ideas is for a delegation of us to visit each club in our council and find out what their needs are, and how our council can help them. We would also need to unify our clubs more, perhaps with additional council dances.

July 15 was the memorable night we crept into the Abernethy Grange. (We didn’t get to dance the week before.) We stole softly upstairs, rounded the corner and poked our heads through the twin doors. There was a gasp! Not a dust bunny was in sight! The floors were gleaming, yearningly invoking us to enter and look some more. With a sudden stampede we were inside. The music began, and we broke into our happy dance on the newly refinished floor!

We get a lot of visitors, but only once in a blue moon do we get an actual club visitation. July was a blue moon month, and the Rosetown Ramblers and Heads to the Center gave us a visitation. Our common denominator is that all three of our clubs are particularly oriented to the solo dancer. Yes, many of us are coupled up, but we’ve always been oriented towards the solo dancer. It is seldom the Ramblers can visit us, as they have their lessons on our dance nights.

Our Mike Sikorsky dance, Aug 5, was also our annual luau dance. And, oh, could we flounce the grass skirts! Club Auditor Buck Cashout says 101 dancers packed our gleaming floor.

We’re going to have our mainstream lessons starting Sept 22 at 7:PM. Our waltz lessons will begin on SEP 23 at 6:30. See the lessons section of this magazine for more details.

Greetings from the Buzzin Bees. Hope everyone has had a good summer. We have lots of news to share. Bill Lundin has accepted a position with the Lions Club that will require frequent travel so he has decided to retire from club calling. Our first dance of the new season , on September 19th, will be a "Thank you" dance in honor of Bill and Linda. I am pleased to announce that KC Curtis has accepted our offer to be our new club caller. His first dance will be October 3rd. We welcome KC and Linda to the club.

Elmer Toops received his long awaited kidney transplant. Looking forward to his feeling better. Our lessons will start on Sunday September 20th from 6-8pm at the Hazel Dell Grange. We will continue with our 1st and 3rd Saturday dances in September with the first Saturday being dark for Labor day. Hope to see you in a square.

Ever dance on pulverized rubber? Introduce tiny bits of rubber to a tennis court, add music, a caller and you have dancing! We joined the Valley River Dancers in Newberg at their “Dancing Under the Stars” event on 7/24/15. So many clubs turned out to dance on a perfect weather night - who could ask for more. Much thanks to Randy Dibble (fun to visit with you too, Sharon) and Julie Stiers for a fun night.

Oaky Doaks hosted their Birthday dance on August 1st, with a special return by Mike Halley as Caller, on stage for the first time since his cancer surgery in June. You showed great stamina Mike - it was a great dance to be celebrating.

We will host Mainstream new-dancer lessons beginning Sundays, Sept. 13th, at the Maplewood Grange. The first two Sundays, Sept. 13 and Sept. 20 are free and Scott Zinser will teach from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Angels are greatly appreciated AND dance for free. Should your Club not offer MS lessons this year, we hope you bring your students, help them through the lessons and introduce them to your Club as "new MS dancers."

Chaps & Petticoats have been dark for the summer and will resume our 1st and 3rd Friday dances beginning Sept.18th, with a Patriotic theme for National POW/MIA Recognition Day, hosting Mike and Helen Halley for your dancing pleasure...we hope you come join us.

Happy Hoppers - Link
After having been "dark" for the Summer, it's September and the Hoppers are happy to be back!

The highpoint of the summer season, our annual club picnic took place on Sunday, August 2, at Don and Joanne Oja's farm. Touching bases with old friends was the order of the day.

At the picnic, we heard some very upbeat news about our club caller, Jim Hattrick. Jim is on the rebound with an intact digestive system! He is now getting a significant amount of his nutrition the natural way, improving daily, and hoping to resume (at least partially) his teaching, calling, and cueing duties in September. Everyone is excited for Jim's progress and eager to greet him on his return.

The Happy Hoppers work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. Square dance lesson season will re-start on Monday, September 21, with a short session for September. We encourage beginning dancers to start introductory lessons on September 21 and, after that, on the first Monday of every month at 7:30. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00.

As always, we have Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00. Our "Back to School" dance will take place on September 5, with Richard Lane calling and Dorothy Lowder cueing. We encourage our members to bring school supplies to donate to students unable to provide their own. On September 19, Craig Abercrombie will be the caller and Lonnie Sykes the cuer.

Since the pace of Jim Hattrick's recovery progress is unpredictable, he may (or may not) show up at any of our September lessons or dances, participating to the extent of his ability at the time.

Over time, our education program has developed a stellar reputation as a great vehicle for beginning square dance students. Many students have risen to the Mainstream level only to be recruited by other clubs before they have had a chance to become Plus dancers and join the Hoppers. We are committed to remain a Plus club, but we also want to keep our students in the family. The best minds of the Happy Hopper leadership have been brainstorming about this for a while now. Several new ideas and variations have been discussed. We're not yet sure about a long term strategy, but on December 5, in an effort to provide our Mainstream students with some Happy Hopper floor time, we will have a "Mainstream Splurge" dance, with the great majority of the tips to be called at the Mainstream level. More details will follow next month.

River City Dancers, River City Riders and BnB’s (Bachelor & Bachelorettes) were honored to host Stan and Norma Craig’s sixtieth wedding anniversary last June 21st. We knew Norma was very ill, but she arrived with big smiles and visited with everyone, even dancing several rounds with Stan. Many thanks to Jolene and Ed Cummings for spearheading the event! To use one of Jolene’s favorite expressions, it was “awesome”.

We lost Norma July 29th. She was a classy, smart lady, serious but fun. She and Stan had danced since 1958. Goodbye, Norma! We will miss you!

I hear that fifteen River City Dancers attended Summer Festival in Klamath Falls during our usual third Saturday dance night, which we had cancelled. Rocky and I had some personal conflicts and weren’t able to attend, but we heard it was lots of fun. It just shows that a smallish but organized group can put on a great party.

River City Riders have been actively performing all over where there’s square dancing, winning high praise from all who are lucky enough to encounter them. Visit their website, http://www.rivercityriders.net/, to get updated information. Anyone who knows a “Rider” realizes the immense amount of time and dedication they devote to their activity.

The end of July brought River City’s annual campout to Lone Fir Resort in Cougar, Washington. Penny and Larry Crow spearheaded a beautiful weekend -- not so steamy and hot, for a change. Then on Sunday, instead of heading home, Rocky, Chino (Rocky’s little Chihuahua) and I went North, to Mt. Rainier. The first day at Paradise Point was so foggy, we could’ve been at Seaside or Cannon Beach and not have known the difference, but the second day we were treated to a fabulous view of the great mountain while hiking around Box Canyon.

We’re looking forward to an uninterrupted month of dancing in August. Remember, we’re casual till the weather cools. See you in a square at 42nd & Jackson, Milwaukie, second and third Saturdays; Les and Paula Seeley; Tami Helms & Kim Keck, our Cuer couple.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
In July, 15 Ramblers traveled to the Abernethy Grange for a visitation to the Bachelors and Bachelorettes. Les Seeley kept us on our toes—as we used to say another century, that man is a caution! The Ramblers took home a banner and many happy memories. We thank the BnB’s for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Back on home turf, we hosted our second annual ice cream social and free taste of square dancing on August 1. Ice cream was a good choice of refreshment, since that Saturday was the last in a long series of scorching days—and we were all wilting by the end of the evening. Still, we welcomed several brand-new dancers, and many other dancers visiting the Ramblers for the first time. Richard Lane amused and challenged the greenhorns and the old masters alike. Thanks to all for supporting our club!

We are looking forward to a busy fall, with the following events on our calendar:

We welcome one and all to join us for high-energy dancing in a friendly environment.

The Silver Stars have been busy this summer visiting summer festivals and weekend events, as well as visiting clubs that have danced all summer. It has been a long, hot summer but if you pace yourself in the heat, an enjoyable time can be had by all--even if it is more visiting than dancing.

We will begin our new dance year on September 12, 2015 with an "Apples Galore" theme dance. Chuck Garner will be calling this dance for us and Dorothy Lowder cueing. We dance at the Hazel Dell Grange with plus from 7 - 8 pm and mainstream dancing from 8 - 10 pm. Hope you will come visit us. Our 4th Saturday dance on the 26th is cancelled, due to a clogging weekend, however we are having a mystery trip--who knows we may visit you. Our fall schedule is filled with Chuck Garner on 2nd Saturdays, and Darrell Kalmbach calling 4th Saturdays. Dorothy is our club cuer, and does her usual terrific job of keeping the round dance full and entertaining.

Summer is almost over and it seems to go by faster each year. Soon classes will start and we hope that everyone has a good turnout of new students. Our local newspaper had a nice article on square dancing with a list of classes in our area.

Our club, along with Sets-in-Order, danced at the Coos County Fair in July and plan on being in the Fun Fest Parade the third weekend in September.

Don’t forget Battle Rock dance Labor Day weekend in Port Orford!

The next TVC event is our annual Hahn Barn Dance, a fifth Saturday dance on Saturday, August 29th. Daryl Clendenin will be our caller/MC with Yvonne Clendenin as our cuer/MC. Other callers and cuers will be invited from the floor to call or co-call a tip. This is always a fun dance with a country social potluck picnic before the dance in the shade beside the lake. The potluck picnic begins at 6:30 and you have about an hour before pre-rounds begin at 7:30 at the barn. Mainstream with every third tip Plus is scheduled to begin at 8:00PM.

Gary and Bette Hahn graciously offer their hospitality each year and it is always a grand time! Their farm is located at 37280 NW Hahn Rd, Banks, OR 97106. Call Gary Clark, 503-647-5742, for more information, or refer to the flyer in the OFN Flyer section.

This dance has always been a great success because of the many dedicated volunteers who help make it happen. We need set-up and clean-up crews for the picnic. We also need to clean the barn the morning of the dance. It is a great time to get to know other club members - so please recruit people from your club to help. TVC volunteers, please send your name and activity you would like to help with to Dale Brabham, at dbrabham@mac.com

Even the most modern buildings can have glitches. So it was at a previous dance when the air conditioning decided to only blow warm air (yes, we dance in an air conditioned room at the Vancouver YMCA). The air conditioner was repaired and our first dance in July was wonderful. A new caller to the area, Jimmy Ellis, called squares with Dorothy Lowder cuing the rounds. The Happy Hoppers had enough dancers and took one of our flags home.

As a newer club we are trying to get ideas for theme dances and were asked to come in some theme attire we would like to pursue. Many of us came dressed for Hawaii so that will probably be on the agenda one day soon.

Our July 25th dance had Randy Dibble calling and Dorothy Lowder cuing. The Valley Squares traveled from Aloha and were able to take a flag home with them. We plan to get it back soon. A great time was had by all.

Our Saturday August 22nd dance will have Mike Stout calling and his wife, Julie, cuing. Richard Lane will be back in September.

Celebrate Labor Day by dancing with us at the Aloha Grange with George Clark calling. Sunset Presbyterian Church is closed for Labor Day but we will be dancing there again with Daryl Clendenin on the 14th, Darrell Kalmbach on the 21st, and George Clark on the 28th. George Clark is retiring at the end of September after a long and successful calling career. We will be welcoming our new callers and cuers Darrell Kalmbach/Joyce Hooper and Daryl and Yvonne Clendenin starting in October.

Thirteen Eager Beavers made the trip to the Summer Festival in Klamath Falls for an enjoyable weekend with about 300 dancers from all over the state. Our caller, George Clark, did a plus workshop and called a MS dance. The featured caller, Scott Byers, and his cuer wife Erin, did a fine job. We send our thanks to the Interstate Highlanders Area Council and Klamath County Square for organizing a wonderful festival.

All square dancers are invited to join us on our annual beach trip September 16th - 18th in Garibaldi. Square dancers have special rates at the Garibaldi Inn. We have activities planned and there will be plenty of food. We do like to eat. For more information on activities and space call Nan at 503-291-1966.

All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, Rounds 1:00 - 1:30; Plus 1:30 - 3:15 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. This hall is air-conditioned which makes dancing a pleasure during the summer. Please check our website at www.eagerbeavers.info for up to date information.

Hoedowners - Link
July was a spectacularly busy month for the Hoedowners. We kicked it off with our Hawaiian Luau dance on the 11th. The weather was certainly tropical that evening so the Polynesian treats were a blessing. Is it true all men own a Hawaiian shirt? From looking around the dance floor, I think that’s a yes.

On the 19th we had another of our wonderful Progressive Dinners. We started the evening with appetizers and clever games at the cool home of Rodney and Debbie Olson. We each received water bottles with the addresses of the remaining locations. The main course, an entrée salad bar, was served by the pool at the home of Donnie and Krystal Laas. Each table was covered with vintage tablecloths and a bouquet of flowers. Misters kept the outside bearable as the temperature reached 95. We ended the evening in the lovely backyard of Tanya and Kent Norby cooling ourselves with ice cream sundaes and banana splits while we enjoyed their hand hewn patio and lighted bar area. Snapshots of some of the intrepid group are posted on the bulletin board in the Grange lobby.

July 25th saw us once again enjoying the air conditioned ballroom for our Root Beer Float Dance. Everyone was in for a wonderful treat as we saw the latest update to the Aloha Grange ballroom. Twenty one Hoedowners were part of the crew that volunteered over the course of four days to prep, paint the ceiling and install the eight spectacular chandeliers. The parachute is gone but in its place is a gracious and sophisticated new dance space. It was magical and I overheard someone say, “It makes me feel like I should have worn my crown”. The floor was crowded while others visited on the sides before we retired to the basement for our frozen refreshments.

Don’t miss either our September 12th School Days Dance when we ask everyone to bring school supplies to donate or the September 26th Farmer’s Market Dance. We want everyone to see and share in the ballroom improvements.

On Wednesday, September 16th, we’ll start our fall mainstream classes. The 16th will be a community dance, inviting friends and neighbors to give square dancing a try. The first three lessons, Sept 16th, 23rd and 30th are all free. Daryl is a wonderful, fun instructor so gather a group and join us.

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.

R Square D dancers celebrated the greatness of America with a Freedom dance on July 8th. We followed it up with our “let’s all wear jeans” denim dance on the 22nd. We had visitors from Happy Hoppers, Harbor Haylofters, Flutter Wheels and Cougar Squares kicking it up in a rousing evening of dancing.

Our thanks go to Dale and Arlene Evanson for hosting the monthly meeting.

September, and the ending to a long beautiful summer, finds us gearing up for new lessons, new friends and fun times together. We kick off the month with a dance on September 1st, Boxcar Car Boogie & Chili feed and on the 26th we have our Autumn Leaves Dance.

In August we had our Luau Mainstream Dance, our Club Picnic at the Noble Woods Park, and Promenaders Plus with guest cuer Tami Helms. Thank goodness for air conditioning; we have had a hot summer this year.

September 5th is our “School Supplies Drive Dance”; please bring some school supplies and we will get them to the schools.

Remember we dance Plus on the first and third Thursdays and Mainstream on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

September 10th through the 12th we are having our Annual Club Beach Campout at Lincoln City Devils’ Lake RV Resort. This is always a special time for the whole family; with games, puzzles, cards, walks, food, dancing, and maybe going to the casino, too.

Be sure to not forget the Sunset Promenaders 30th Anniversary Dinner and Dance on October 3rd. We plan on a ham dinner at 6:30, and the dance will start about 7:30 until 10:00 with a dessert break after the dance. We are happy to have Dan Preedy from Spokane, a national caller, doing the calling and Ken Pratt will be cueing for us. We are now selling tickets, so get yours before we run out; we only have room for so many dancers.

The Toe’s started July with a bang. KC’s and the USA’s birthdays together on a warm night with an excellent BBQ and fun dance combined. Kudos to the Toe Dragger’s for providing a great dance on July 17th for the folks that couldn’t make it to summer festival. Mark Wheeler stepped in for KC. Have you ever danced a Conga line, ending up in your own square? It was fun. Thanks to both Mark and Bev. Speaking of Summer Festival…. Congratulations to Peggy and Bill Hults for helping to win, the Last Square Dance Standing Contest.

Japan here we come to finish out our year’s world tour. Come and visit us in August.

Our Anniversary dance is set for September 4th and lessons beginning on Wednesday evenings, September 9th. We expect to see Pink, Pink and more Pink on Saturday September 12th for our special dance, Man Enough to Wear Pink Dance. Fun, food, laughter and a raffle of baskets, all to help support the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Bev Flint our cuer has put forth a challenge to KC. She states she will try to have more cuers, cueing than callers, calling, at the dance. The dance is from 1 to 4 p.m.

During the month of August, we enjoyed our annual club picnic. The picnic was held at Snyder Park in Sherwood. Our picnic included a sing-a-long including a guitar and banjo! It was a great time for all members to have fellowship and fun.

Round Dance lessons will begin September 20th at 2PM to 3:15PM. We will be learning the 2-Step. Our cuer instructor is Sandra Pinion. Square dance lessons will be following the round dance lessons from 3:30PM to 5:30PM. Terry Halley will be teaching the square dance lessons. The first two square dance lessons will be free. We hope to see you there!

We will be having only one dance during the month of September due to the holiday. We hope that everyone has a safe day. Please join us for our "Let’s Celebrate” dance on the 18th. This dance is Tri Squares 17th anniversary. Our club caller is Terry Halley and our cuer is Sandra Pinion. Our dance will start at 7:30 PM with 15 minutes of pre-rounds and 15 minutes of plus. Our Mastering Mainstream, Beginning Plus class starts Tuesday, September 15th. The cost is $6 for individual workshops, or $9 for both. Times are 6:30 - 8, MM; 8 - 9:30 Plus.

September 5th we will be collecting school supplies at our Back to School Dance.

Darrell Kalmbach filled in for Chuck at our 4th of July Dance. We were dark for Summer Festival. A number of us attended Dancing Under the Stars in Newberg, and we captured a banner from Columbia River Dancers the next evening.

History lessons about John Jacob Astor and Clatskanie, bingo games en route, a demo dance at the Maritime Museum, the main dance and dinner at Netel Grange, and a beach bonfire with singing and s'mores made for an excellent Mystery Trip. Wave Steppers - Link
The Wave Steppers’ September dance on the 12th will feature Darrell Kalmbach calling, with line dance instructor Gwen Kiel. It won’t be the last dance of the year, though; the Wave Steppers will be having an October as well as a Christmas dance, date not certain yet, at the Tillamook Elks Lodge where we’ve been having our square dance classes.

In 2016, the club’s monthly dance schedule will start in March; our first dance will be the second Saturday in March on the 12th. That’s the same weekend as the famous Garibaldi Crab Races. After that, we’ll have dances the second Saturday of the month in April, May, June, July, August, September, and October. The March, April, May, September and October dances are tentatively scheduled to be called by club caller Joe Wrabek.

The wave Steppers’ monthly dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall. Most of the second floor of the building is a dance floor, built by the Fire Department in the 1940's for the old Firemen’s Balls. The Garibaldi square dance club, which has been in business at least since around 1900, has danced there ever since the dance floor was built. The Garibaldi Inn and Suites, located half a block away, offers discounts for dancers spending the night. Please visit our webpage for up to date information, www.wavesteppers.org.

If you were listening, you might have heard the pitter patter of feet hopping into their cars and heading out of Roseburg to dance at the Summer Festival in Klamath Falls and the Diamond Lake Festival this month. Those of us that danced at the Festivals had a great time dancing and visiting with out of town friends. We went dark for the month of July so our dancers could travel to both festivals.

For the first time ever in July, we held a Barn sale which coincided with our local Graffiti Week End in Roseburg. A few graffiti cars were seen in our parking lot scoping out our great buys and second hand treasurers.

Sadly for some of us, summer will soon be winding down, fall will be here, and like so many other clubs it will be time for the big push for lessons. Our mainstream lessons will begin Sept. 14th (taught by Chuck Simpkins) which will a change for us from Tuesday to Monday evenings. What a fun way to start out the work week, right? (Work week? What’s that? Yes, for some of us that’s still our reality.) A ten week session of round dance lessons will begin September 17th. Neil will be teaching the waltz. Our Sept. 5th and Sept 19th dances will be casual attire...so feel free to wear your comfy clothes if you visit us in September!

Happy Dancing,

Our past president, Laura, is moving back to Washington State. We will miss her & her dedication to the club! Fred Muir stepped up after the announcement of Laura's impending relocation to resume the president position.

After a summer of travelling to festivals around the state, including Summer Festival in Klamath Falls & Diamond Lake, we are looking forward to plus dances starting up again this September at the Barn. The Timber 8's will be only dancing once a month this coming year & are aiming for the 2nd Saturdays, but it may not always be that week. Please check our calendar (umpquaareasquaredancers.org/calendar) or Facebook page (facebook.com/RoseburgSquareDance) often to find out if our plus dance is on the 2nd or the 4th Saturday of the month.

We will also be starting plus lessons with caller Don Marshall on Tuesdays this autumn. Join us from 7-9p beginning 9/22 to learn or brush up on plus, or to be an angel for plus students! Reach out to us via Facebook or email at RoseburgSquareDance@gmail.com if you have any questions.
