Oregon Federation News
February 2016

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 February 2016
Editor's Note

December was a difficult month for the square dance community. We lost raconteur and former Federation President Al Westphal, Central Oregon dancer Jacque' Talbert, and Tualatin Valley dancers Claire Enloe and Cathy Bailey. Obituaries for all four are in the articles section.

Our own Jim Hattrick continues to recover from a stroke that he suffered in January while teaching square dance classes.

I am pleased to announce that you can now upload flyers for your lessons. You may do this on the same "Lessons" page where you enter your lesson information. The flyer will carry forward from year to year, so be sure to check the flyer before you begin new lessons.

I am a bit concerned about the trend in flyers. We had 55 flyers in December, 34 flyers in January, but with only a few days to go we still only have 14 flyers for this month. There are quite a number from TVC, but only 2 from Mid-Willamette, 3 from Portland, 3 from Umpqua, and none at all from the other 6 councils. If you have made a decision not do make flyers any more, I'd like to know why. Drop me a note.

Youth Activities

If you are a high school senior or college freshman and are planning on continuing your education in a college or trade school, there are two square dance scholarships to be aware of. The United Square Dancers of America (USDA) awards one $1,000 scholarship each year to a high school senior who has been a member of a federated square dance club for at least one year. The completed application form is due by February 1, 2016. The application and guidelines can be found on their website at: http://www.usda.org/youth.htm. All applications must be accompanied by a Nomination Form signed by OFSRDC President Kay Rogers.

The second scholarship is from the OFSRDC (Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs) and is available for all high school seniors and college freshmen who have been a member of a federated square dance club for at least one year and are going to continue with their education. The OFSRDC scholarship is $500, and applications are due May 1, 2016. The application and guidelines are on the OFRSDC website at www.squaredance.gen.or.us/ScholarshipApp.php.

If you have questions about the scholarships, please contact for more information.

Mid-Winter

Since Mid-Winter occurs rather late in the month this year, there's still time for me to remind you that Mid-Winter Festival will be held at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany, January 29 to 31, 2016. Click here for forms and more information.

You can view the Mid-Winter Festival schedule on the festival web site.

Summer Festival

Oregon's 2016 Summer Festival will be held at the Seaside Convention Center, July 29 to 31, 2016. You may download your registration form right here. Seaside hotels fill up quickly in the summer, so get your reservations in early.

Oh, my goodness, but we had FUN at our December 19 Christmas dance. The Whirl-A-Ways, Single Trees and Wolf Pack co-sponsored this special dance. It's always fun, exciting and satisfying to have clubs work together. We had a little over 8 squares, and dancers dressed up in Christmas colors and bling. Mike Kious and Roger Putzler did a great job. Mike's grandpa and grandma (George and Patty Hermann) came too. Grandpa George called too. What fun! Christina cued many holidays rounds.

Our own Mimi Mills has retired from the hall board after 24 years being the Hall Coordinator. Mimi has done many tasks over the years and has made such a positive difference. Mimi's health is more important right now, and we wish her the best of luck taking care of herself like she has taken care of the rest of us and the dance hall. There is absolutely no one like Mimi Mills. Thank you Mimi, and God bless you. We hope to see you at our dances. Mimi and her husband, Red, are lifetime members of Danebo Circle 8.

An update on Mimi Mills. Mimi was admitted to Riverbend Hospital January 3. We know she will be well taken care of and pray for her recovery. You can always e-mail me if you wish an update, and I have a lot of people on my e-mail lists as well.

A number of Danebo Circle Eighters attended the New Year's Eve dance with Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli calling and cueing. Roger and Christina do this dance as a thank you for the support they receive for their Buccaneers plus dance throughout the year. The entire evening was $2! The New Year's Eve dance was for all dancers at all levels. There were also 30 pies and other goodies. Thank you Roger and Christina! Roger and Christina are also our own caller and cuer.

May this new year bring you many blessings, good health and a lot of fun dancing!

Keep on dancin!

Christina and Kirby hosted a party at their home in December for the Spin Cycle Squares. It was a lot of fun to get together away from the dance hall and also to see dancers that can no longer dance. We also had one non-dancer in the mix, and it's looks like she's itching to give square dancing a try.

Tim Matteson, our caller, had a gathering of his own at his home in Springfield. Tim had an amazing Playmobile set up for our enjoyment and amazement. Last year Tim had a different Playmobile set up which entranced us all. He's got thousands upon thousands of pieces that he puts together to make almost anything. This year the theme was 'Winter" with a hockey rink, spectators, vendors, you name it! Amazing!

Sally Brown dances with us and also takes care of the used clothing area. She has done amazing and innovative things to bring in money for the hall each month. One Sunday, hours before our dance, Sally primed and painted the panels surrounding the used clothing area. She even danced a couple of tips with us before heading home to crash. The used clothing area looks pristine and is a beautiful backdrop for clothing that she displays. Thank you Sally for all your hard work and ingenuity.

We continue to dance all levels from 5:30 - 8:00 most Sundays in Hall A at the hall in Sprngfield. We encourage you to join us. Please call Tim at 541-988-0399 or our president, David at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We rarely go dark, but you never know.

We do look forward to having Kris Jensen, national caller from Albuquerque, back with us in March.

Happy dancing!

As 2015 ends, we look forward to 2016 and Mid-Winter Festival. We have seven students in our new dancer’s class who will graduate shortly before the Festival and we are encouraging them to attend. They have been attending area New Dancer Dances.

Our Christmas/New Dancer Dance was very well attended. Six squares on the floor with visitors from many area clubs. Lots of fun! Also, lots of experienced clothing was sold.

Happy New Year. See you at Mid-Winter. Carmen Rost

By the time this is reported, Mid Winter Festival will be behind us, and we hope that all had an enjoyable time there!

February is very special for our club as it is the month of our Birthday Dance, on February 13! The wonderful wooden dance floor at our regular dance hall, First Congregational Church, has been refinished and is ready for dancing.

Thanks to all who have hosted the New Dancers' dances; they've been a lot of fun!

We're looking forward to our coast trip March 11-13 at Gleneden Beach Community Club, and all are welcome! We're dancing there both Friday and Saturday nights. Karen Karplus

The first dance of the year was fun with two squares dancing. Daryl Clendenin was calling and Ralph Lambert was cueing. January 9 was our regular dance with George and Ralph.

On a more exciting note, we have a very special dance coming up on February 13, 2016. IWW will be hosting a “MARDI GRAS DANCE”. George will be calling and Ralph cueing. Costumes are appreciated, with square dance attire welcome. All dancers are welcome. Come join the fun with IWW at the “MARDI GRAS”.

On April 9, IWW presents Dan Nordbye. This is our regular dance night and we welcome everyone to come enjoy the calling of a National caller. See you there.

IWW will be dancing on our regular second and third Saturdays until August, so come visit with us. We would like to see you. Sandy Eddings

December was a busy month for everyone and especially our dancers. Our club members took part in the community "Holidays In the Park" at Ralson Park in Lebanon. Our lighting display was awarded first place for Best of Theme with a beautiful trophy. Our Toy Dance/ New Dancers Dance was super.

Lessons are moving right along and our students will graduate on January 17 following the Lebanon Square Circlers 67th Birthday Dance. Our club is the second oldest club in Oregon. We hope lots of dancers will be there to help us celebrate this birthday. Charlotte Jeskey will be calling with guest caller Jim Voll and Jackie Gale will be cueing. Strawberry shortcake will be served at the break.

Our club members celebrated New Years Eve in Corvallis. The Alliance clubs (Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon, and Sweet Home) have a New Year’s dance each year with the clubs taking turns hosting. Great way to greet 2016. See you in a square! Marilyn York

We had a most excellent New Year’s Eve dance with over 17 couples in attendance. We danced phase 3-4 and some phase 5. Lots of food was served on two tables. We had noise makers, hats, leis, and sparkling cider to bring in the New Year. As president, I want to thank the membership and the guests for a fun night of friendship, music and food. David Vomocil (Kathy) assisted our cuer Cheryl Manley (Geof) in cueing some great music and working on the request list that grew longer as the night went on. Hopefully we can do it again this year. I have already asked for the hall for the evening.

We, as a group, are working on a Showcase for Mid-Winter and will spend January working on our styling. Our cuer, Cheryl Manley, is doing the choreography and it should be fun.

We will start on a new rhythm as soon as we make a decision as to what it will be. We are looking at some tango workshops over the summer to keep us busy before the fall season begins. Marilyn Schmit

Our December dance was a lot of fun for those who came. We also celebrated the 50th birthday of one of our club members (my father), Mathew Buchheit.

We had a demo at a Senior Center on December 19. We only had one square show up, but we were able to do a nice demo to Leonard's calling. They have asked us to come back again sometime.

We wish everyone a Happy New Year! Petrina Buchheit

What a celebration we had for New Years! Seven squares of Plus and A2 dancers joined the Valley River Dancers for a swingin' good time to ring in the New Year. There's certainly no better company than square dancers to start a new year on the right foot.

Our new dancers' dance will be held Friday, January 22, at the Newberg Community Center beginning at 7:30 with rounds by Julie Stiers. Our caller, Randy Dibble, promises to take it easy for this one night only!

February is a busy month for us. Romance is in the air on Friday, February 12; grab a date and join us for our Sweetheart Dance (Plus). Friday February 26 is our Anniversary Dance, and we'll be dancing Mainstream, beginning with a half hour of Plus at 7:30. Join us! Perrin Damon

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares went dark for the month of December resumed its normal schedule in January, dancing every fourth Saturday of the month at the Salem Square Dance Center.

We met for a club meeting on December 20 and among the topics discussed was the afternoon New Dancer Dance which we would have been hosting in the new year on January 3 at the Salem Square Dance Center. However, due to unanticipated snowfall and a forecast of freezing rain, we thought it best in the interest of safety to postpone the dance until further notice when we can count on the weather to be more co-operative. Also in the works is planning our next visitation.

We anticipate Two Step lessons will conclude by the end of January, followed by waltz lessons to begin in February. We are hoping for the year 2016 to be one of much square and round dancing. Happy New Year to all the clubs from Willamette Squares!

One of the ways being a member of a council benefits clubs is as an information exchange. For instance, our council president believes that the more communication among clubs, councils and state, the better. Not only does it avoid event conflicts, but we can all learn what works and what doesn’t work for our individual clubs.

We always have great dances, particularly this Feb 10th when we have our Valentine’s Dance. We’re hoping our cute half-naked cherub will again visit us with his little bow and arrow. I’m really going to flirt with him this year. Or should I dance with my regular partner? Remember, between two evils, pick the one you haven’t tried before.

If you can’t make it Feb 10, Leonard Snodgrass will be calling Feb 17. He doesn’t come up here a whole lot, so it’s a special treat when he can be enticed to call for us.

Greetings from the Buzzin' Bees. I hope everyone had a good holiday season. I want to be the first to wish you a Happy Valentines Day and hope your month is filled with love in honor of valentine's day. We only have 1 dance in February and it is on 2/6/16. It is our annual Pie Eating Contest. It is great fun and if you are a fast eater you could win and have your name engraved on our plaque. Of course there will be pie for the break. We are dark on 2/20 because the grange is rented to a clogging group that night so we will plan a visitation.

Next month I'll let you know how it is going with our new lesson class and our new format for the first dance of the month. We are starting a workshop for the first dance of the month. Come and work on anything giving you problems on the dance floor. Hope to see you in a square.

Country Cut-Ups - Link
Aren’t you glad you are a square dancer? We have so much fun, great friends, a safe place to exercise and socialize, and a wonderful community of support. We need to be promoting this great activity year round. There are many people in the community that don’t even know about this treasure that sits right under their noses.

It is not too early to think about the annual Barn Sale, one of our major fund raisers for the year. If you are a Cut-Up, keep this in mind as you do your spring cleaning. If you are not a Cut-Up, we still accept donations, and keep in mind a place to find some real bargains. Date will be announced soon, but it is usually in April at the Boring Barn. We have also had a simple fund raiser for several months, about once a month at the Gresham Burgerville. Ask Kathie Femrite for the dates, and come out and help clean tables, serve food, and promote square dancing, or just come eat some dinner at the right time. A percentage of the profit goes to our club during these Wednesday night club service times.

Spring also brings elections, so consider volunteering to run for a position in the club when the nominating committee comes around. We all have to do our part, by taking turns serving, as well as keeping up with door, kitchen, and housekeeping duties. Maybe you can’t commit to a yearlong service as an officer, but you can help with a special event. Many hands make lighter work. Overall, we have a great club that steps up to get the job done “thank you!

Happy Hoppers - Link
We had a great time at our New Year's Eve dance. In keeping with the "Wild West" theme, John Wayne showed up for photo opportunities and dinner was served from an authentic chuck wagon. Attendance was great with 10 squares for the first tip. The Front Porch Trio (Jim Hattrick, Craig Abercrombie, and Adam Christman) kept us moving all night.

The Happy Hoppers believe in giving back to our community. With that in mind, we have committed to donating a few hours of our time, one Tuesday morning a month as a group, to sort food donations into usable categories for the FISH food bank in downtown Vancouver. They appreciate it greatly, and we have a fun time doing it. Everybody wins!

At our December 5th dance we recognized the long-term commitment of Dorothy Lowder and Hoyt Brezeale to furthering round dancing in our small chunk of the world. They were presented with a commemorative plaque and a large basket of fruit. By the time you read this, the fruit will be long gone, but they still have the plaque.

Carol and Danny Williamson are organizing a February 12th visitation to the Single Trees club's Anniversary Dance in Springfield, Oregon. We're renting a luxury bus, for transportation and an overall good time. The callers will be the Wild Cards. Jackie Gale will be cueing.

We will host our regular first and third Saturday dances at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Our annual Sweetheart Dance will be on February 6, with a regular club dance on February 20. Jim Hattrick will take care of both calling and cueing. At our February dances, we'll be collecting non-perishable food to donate to a local food bank, so please keep that in mind.

We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. We encourage beginning dancers to start introductory lessons on the first Monday of every month at 7:30. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00.

Oaky Doaks - Link
It was a busy holiday season for the Oaky Doaks.

Our December kicked off with a first Saturday that featured dancing in the street (and the rain!) at the city-sponsored Barns Dance celebration of a new pedestrian ‘scramble’ crossing in downtown Portland. At the Christmas Gospel dance that night, we decked the hall with a silent auction of crafts and other seasonal goodies to spread holiday cheer.

At the annual Holiday Party on December 12th we enjoyed an abundance of potluck contributions, a slightly rowdy gift exchange, and an Ugly Christmas Sweater contest. The next day, hardy members braved the chill to volunteer at the Peninsula Optimist Club Christmas Tree lot. The Club receives a donation for every hour volunteered.

On December 17th the latest class of two-step round dancers graduated. Square dance lessons began January 7th with something a little different: we’re holding No Experience Necessary dances for the first three weeks. This involves teaching a different series of basic calls each week. Traditional format lessons continue from January 27th.

Our final visitation of 2015 was to the Bachelor ‘n’ Bachelorettes’ 50’s Rock the Night Away New Year’s Dance Party, where Oaky Doaks caller Mike Halley was calling as one of the Wild Cards. Since this was held on December 30th, some of us were also able to celebrate New Year’s Eve with the River City Dancers at their Last Hoedown.

The first January dance was the Poor Man’s dance, where we collected canned goods for the Oregon Food Bank and held a Clothing Resale. We just made it home before the snowstorm hit that blanketed the area the next day. Our second dance will be a Hawaiian Luau dance on January 16th.

Looking ahead, we’re planning for Mid-Winter, of course. We were honored to have eight officials of the Festival Committee at our Turkey Trot dance in November.

The Reigning Cats and Dogs dance on February 6th is a pet food donation fundraiser supporting the companion animals of local low-income participants in the Meals-On-Wheels program. Pet food is distributed by the organization along with its regular food distribution program. Visitors who bring a can/bag of cat or dog food to the dance get $1 off at the door. The third Saturday dance will focus on love songs “ a Sweetheart dance.

February 13th is the annual Valentine’s Brunch when the guys put on the aprons, cook and serve.

We invite you to join the fun with us at dances on the first and third Saturdays, and at lessons on Thursdays from 7:30-9:30pm.

Thanks to my long-time friend and fellow dancer, Gail Domine, for standing in for me as OFN reporter for River City Dancers during my period of incapacity after a long bout of serious atrial fibrillation. I’m not cured but I’m better all the time, and Kaiser Cardiology has plans for more permanent correction during the next month.

River City Dancers enjoyed a fabulous New Year’s Eve event, “The Last Hoedown”, thanks to Vic and Elaine Lancaster, Richard and Carolyn George and their helpers. Les Seeley and Rene Ruud called, and Patty Herman cued. The “Chuck Wagon” dinner was great.

Our beloved caller couple, Les and Paula Seeley, have announced that Les will retire as our River City caller at Mid Winter Festival in 2017. Les and Paula have been with us for over 25 years. They will be hard to replace but a committee has been convened and will bring recommendations to the club.

Our class graduation was Sunday, January 17th. We’ve had a great class, and our angels have been superlative, headed by Ron and Barbara Whitworth. We’re encouraging our new folks to keep dancing, join a club, and put 2016 Mid Winter Festival on their calendars.

Jolene and her husband, Ed, have been active supporters for River City Dancers and River City Riders in so many ways. There is no greater club photographer than Jolene, but she has so many other accomplishments to list. Among them is heading our Resale Clothing sale, with a profit of $648. It was a group effort shared by Ron and Barbara Whitworth, Lois Manos and Bert Labedz.

Hopefully you will remember to come dance with us on second and third Saturdays of every month, including the summer months. We love visitors! Milwaukie Community Club is our home, 10444 SE 42nd Ave.; Milwaukie 97222.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
After all that December rain, we Ramblers had to wring out our socks to ring in 2016, but we did it in style with our annual Black and White Ball at the Milwaukie Grange. After a delicious dinner (featuring baked ham!), we danced off those Christmas calories in style. Stephen Cole celebrated his ninth year calling this dance for the Ramblers”and he did it with his usual aplomb. We have already arranged to bring him back for his tenth anniversary in 2017.

On January 6, we held the first of our two Free Introductions to square dancing before our winter lessons start. We had a nice group of new dancers, including two recent immigrants from Japan! There were smiles all around as the new dancers experienced our unique blend of square dance culture and Rambler hospitality. We look forward to a big Mainstream class this winter.

On February 6, we will be back at the Milwaukie Grange, with Chuck Garner calling. Chuck taught many of us to dance, so it’s always a treat to welcome him “home” and show him how well our dancing is progressing. We warmly invite all dancers”singles are especially welcome at the Ramblers”to enjoy a potluck dinner from 6-7 and alternating Mainstream and Plus tips from 7-9:30. We don’t include round dancing in our program, so if you are purely a square dancer, we will keep you on your feet all night!

The TVC helped usher in the New Year with a festive good time. Doug Davis called a lively dance with Randy Lewis cueing the rounds. The evening started with a lasagna dinner, followed by dancing, and then Auld Lang Syne. The evening was enjoyed by about ten squares of dancers from nine clubs plus independents. The Sunset Promenaders had the highest percentage of their club in attendance and won the TVC Banner.

Since the OFN is now online and published mid-month, you still have time to consider a January TVC event, our annual TVC President’s Meeting & Potluck for current and past club Presidents. It will be held at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall on Jan 25th and will include a potluck dinner at 6:00. A short business meeting will begin at 7:00 followed with TVC President Gary Clark announcing the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award” for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area.

It pays to read the Oregon Federation News. You can find things such as the news that Vancouver's Columbia River Dancers have moved from the YMCA to the Hazel dell Grange. Yes, we have moved. Look for us at the Hazel Dell Grange!! The club gives a big "thank you" to the Vancouver YMCA for the use of their facilities our first year in existence. They were very gracious to us. However, we just could not overcome the lack of good acoustics for our dances and the difficult time our callers had seeing the floor. So, when the opportunity to move to the Grange came up, we took it. The time and dates are still the same, so look forward to seeing you on the second and fourth Saturdays. While we were making changes, we also changed our lesson night from Wednesday to Thursday. We will continue to start beginner classes the first Thursday of each month. This allows new students the opportunity to get two shots at lessons each week as we are cooperating with the Happy Hoppers on the sequence of calls learned. Jim Hattrick is teaching both groups, and we have seen great progress in those who attend both sessions.

Our February 13th dance will have Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing and our regular caller, Jim Hattrick, calling and cueing on the 27th. We dance plus from 7 PM to 8 and mainstream from 8-10. We encourage singles, couples and families to dance with us.

And speaking of Jim Hattrick, he will be continuing his "Plus and a little bit more" classes on Tuesdays evenings at the Grange. He does a workshop for intermediate round dancers at 6 PM and plus square dancers starting at 7. If you want to hone your skills, I encourage you to try it.

We will be having our 1st Anniversary dance on March 12th with Adam Christman as our featured caller and cuer. We are looking forward to another great year and would love to have you join us.

Somehow winter seems shorter when February comes around even if it does have 29 days in 2016. Besides, it also has Valentine’s Day and a holiday, Presidents’ Day.

This February is special for us because we begin our Plus Class which welcomes students starting on Monday, February 15th from noon to 2:00 pm. Classes are only $4 each and we have three top instructors: Jim Hattrick - 3rd Mondays, Darrell Kalmbach - 2nd & 4th Mondays, and Daryl Clendenin - 1st & 5th Mondays. There will be a fifteen minute break at 1:15. At 1:30 students will have the opportunity to dance two tips with the club using what they have just learned. This is the best opportunity ever for moving to the plus level or even honing your plus dancing skills Call Marie 503-645-0730 or Sally 503-645-2414 for more information and to sign up. See our flyer in this issue.

We will have our annual King and Queen of Hearts Dance on February 8th. Our royalty is chosen by luck of the draw so you may win the chance to be the ruler for a while. Wear your heart on your sleeve and a smile on your face. Everyone loves a lover.

We dance on holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons: Rounds 1:00 - 1:30 (Rounds will start at 1:15 during lessons); Plus 1:30 - 3:15 PM, Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. We dance on holidays too so if you have a day off come join us.

On Sunday, December 6th we kicked off the holly jolly season with our New Dancer Jamboree. Daryl had quite a group join him on stage; Jim Hattrick, Mike Stout, Chuck Garner and K. C. Curtis. Julie Stout joined Yvonne in cueing. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to spend an afternoon on the dance floor and for the new dancers a chance to practice singing calls and hear new and different voices. Thanks to the Aloha Grange for the beautifully decorated ballroom.

We held our Toyland Dance on the 12th and piled our donated toys under the Christmas tree. We enjoyed dancing to holiday music and singing along; do you know the lyrics to Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer? We finished the evening by joining hands and singing Silent Night before refreshments. All the donated toys were delivered to the Toyota dealership where they were matched gift for gift.

The Hoedowners contributed cash, gift cards, toys, apparel, and home goods to the Aloha Grange’s holiday adopted family. It’s a wonderful tradition and a chance for our members to share our bounty.

Our Pajama Dance hit the spot coming just the day after Christmas. Everyone relaxed in their pj’s and comfies. Dancing in slippers can be a challenge but everyone seemed to master the skill. We dined on breakfast food; bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits & gravy, eggs, a welcome change from the normal holiday fare.

Many Hoedowners celebrated New Year’s Eve at the TVC dance but no matter where we were we anticipate another great year with our friends and families. We wish everyone the blessing of contentment in 2016.

In February we hope to see you on the 13th for our Queen of Hearts dance. On February 27th is our 66th Anniversary Dance!! Where were you in February 1950? We’ll be serving a chicken dinner at 6:15, 7-9 pm Mainstream with Plus from 9:10-10pm.

Our Christmas dance was a treat as always, with food for Oregon Food Bank piled on the stage. Randy and Jeanine had a delightful selection of Christmas music for us to dance to, altogether a perfect evening.

Thus far the weather hasn’t interfered with dance attendance. If forecasts change, do check our website, http://www.mixandminglesquares.org/ for the latest.

R Square D has had a fun filled December, starting with 24 members attending the Cougars Thankful Christmas Dance. What a great time we had although we missed have Jim Raupp doing the calling because of illness. Craig Abercrombie was the caller for the evening and Susan Healea was the cuer. They both did a good job of keeping the evening fun and lively. R Square D was presented with a traveling guitar.

On December 11th we had our Christmas Toy dance. We had visitors from Happy Hoppers, Cougars, Prairie Steppers and Fairway Village. Craig and Lonnie did the calling and cuing for the evening. Toys were collected and donated to the Salvation Army,

Our annual Christmas dinner, meeting and Christmas party was on December 14th. The food was excellent, the meeting short and the gift exchange was a lot of fun. We were dark for our 4th Saturday dance which would have been December 26th.

On Friday, February 12th we will have our Valentine's dance, and on Saturday, February 27th will be our Dancing in the Rain Dance.

Mainstream lessons started January 10th with the hopes of growing our club; we have lost several dancers over the recent past to people moving away, health problems, etc. So we need to get some new people to just keep the same number of members and hopefully then even increase our membership of the club.

Mainstream dances on February 6th and 20th. The theme for these dances is “President’s Dances”. Now that the holidays are over we hope you will come visit us, we have a lot of fun and we could have even more if you come visit us.

Plus dances will be on February 4th and 18th; we are getting a good turnout but would of course like to see more dancers. Darrell Kalmbach is calling a great dance and Ken Pratt is doing a good job of cueing, too.

Beginning the New Year it is time to get back to visiting other clubs and doing our lessons. We hope the best for all the square dance clubs; we could sure use some new younger energetic members to revitalize the activity we love to do; maybe 2016 will start a new wave of dancers to help our clubs. Thanks for the past memories; let’s continue to make some more good memories in the future.

December flew by so fast this year. Such a wet one but kept thinking it’s all to keep our beautiful state green, year round. Hope you all had a great Christmas and danced in the New Year.

Our first dance of January came on the 1st. What a fun way to dance in 2016. It was our Black and Blue Ball, dancing until you drop marathon with all singing calls. A few of us did drop but had a great time while doing it. Thanks KC and Bev for making it a fun time for all.

January 3rd was the start for our Round Dance lessons at our Kinton Grange, with Bev and Harlan Flint. Those two make everything fun. Lessons are from 2 to 4 p.m. Come and join in on the fun learning the Two Step and Waltz. KC and Linda resumed mainstream lessons on Wednesday nights at our grange on January 6th from 7 to 9 p.m. We have had some great new beginners that have brought in laughter and new friendships.

We hope to see you in a square at Mid-Winter Festival and back home to the Kinton Grange for our Sadie Hawkins Dance on February 5th. Come and join us for a southern style dinner before the dance. All are welcome and we are looking forward to seeing some fun costumes. It’s your time to shine.

Finish off the Football Season by attending our Souper Bowl Dance February 6th at Aloha Grange. Soup will be served at 6:15, followed by Plus and Pre-Rounds at 7:00, then Mainstream and Rounds from 8-10. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling and Connie Clark cueing.

In order to provide new dancers an opportunity to attend a "real dance," we are changing our schedule for our second dance in February. The theme is Chocolate, which will be featured at our open break. We will start with class-level dancing at 7 p.m., followed by progressively more challenging Mainstream from 8-9, and ending with Plus from 9 to 10. Please encourage your new dancers and students to take advantage of this opportunity to get in some floor time. Chuck Garner will be rising to the challenge of spontaneous choreographing for a wide range of experience and Connie Clark will be cueing.

December was a month where our members showed their Christmas spirit by contributing to the canned food drive, the Aloha Grange's Adopted Family, and the Toyota Toy Drive. We recaptured our flag from Valley River Dancers and stole another from Tri-Squares. We ended the year by attending either the TVC New Year's Eve dance at Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall, or Valley River's Special Desserts New Year's Eve Dance in Aurora.

The Wave Steppers’ first dance of the 2016 season will be the St. Patrick’s Dance Saturday, March 12th, with club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel. This is Crab Races Weekend, so if you need to book a hotel room or RV space, you should do it well in advance.

Joe and Gwen will also be sharing the bill at the club’s Spring Fling Dance Saturday, May 14th, the Western Dance Saturday, June 11th, and the Fall Dance Saturday, October 8th.

We have out-of-town callers at the club’s other 2016 dances: Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing our “Jim Hattrick Dance” Saturday, April 9th; Harvey Hunsucker will call and cue the Beach-Themed Dance Saturday, July 9th; we’ll have caller Darrell Kalmbach and cuer Connie Clark at the County Fair Dance Saturday, August 13th; and at the Elvis Dance Saturday, September 10th, it’ll be caller Mark Wheeler (as Elvis) with cuer Connie Clark.

All the dances are held on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth St. (at Acacia). Two-thirds of the second floor of the building is a dance floor, built in the 1940s. (The Dance Floor is handicapped-accessible.)

Square dance classes continue every Wednesday night at the Tillamook Elks lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook. The classes are taught by caller Joe Wrabek, and are free.

December started with our dance on the 5th. It was called by our own Dale Roberson. As we spend time dancing with Dale, we are reminded how blessed we are to have had him as part of our club for so many years. The dance was well attended and everyone had a great time.

We invited our students to the Christmas dance held on the 19th. We had an amazing seven squares of dancers out on the floor. It was so much fun to see and feel the excitement in the air. We even had a square of visitors who traveled down from Portland for the dance. The caller for the evening was Terry Halley who also traveled from the Portland area just to call our Christmas dance.

We are starting the New Year off with national caller Mike Sikorsky coming to the barn. He will be here on January 2, 2016. If you are in the area, join us for a night of great fun and dancing. This will be the first time that Mike has been to the Buckeroo Barn, but we are hoping it will not be his last!

We hope everyone gets to dance in the New Year!
