Oregon Federation News
August 2016

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 21 August 2016
Editor's Note

It's an awkward time to write this, because when I publish this issue, Summer Festival will still be 10 days away, but by the time of the official date, the festival will be finished.  I know the Festival committee and the city of Seaside is ready to show everyone a good time.

Daryl Clendenin has organized a "meeting of the minds" to brainstorm plans to stem the continued loss of dancers in our activity.  I imagine we'll be hearing good things from that group.

Those of you who have attended National Square Dance Conventions in the past will be excited to learn that the 2020 NSDC will be returning to Spokane, WA.  There will be lots more information about this in the next couple of years.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Publicity and Education

Over the next few months, I will be sharing information with you on various subjects that our clubs might find useful.  If you have questions about the information presented or have an idea for a subject for another issue, please email me at Kathy@4roberts.us.  This month, our topic will be on when to request dance insurance for your Federated Club activities and what to do if there is an injury.

Insurance for your regular dance location & dates and your regular lessons location & dates are listed once a year on the Federation or Association Club Listing Form.  In addition to listing your dance information, all club members are listed on an insurance club roster.  Insurance Chairman Kay Rogers will be distributing the forms and directions to the council delegates during the OFSRDC September State Meeting for the 2016-2017 dance year.

If your club is considering holding a demo dance, or dancing during a mystery trip, dancing in a parade, dancing in a different location on your regular night, hosting a special dance, or dancing at a time different from what your club lists on its annual Federation or Association Club Listing Form, you must request insurance for this special dance activity by submitting a Notification of Dance Event Form (www.squaredance.gen.or.us/insurance/NotificationOfEvent.html)  through the link on the Federation website prior to the dance.  This includes ALL club activities where you will be dancing. You only need to turn in one form per event if several clubs are involved, the club or council that is taking the lead should submit the form.  This form should be turned in even if you are only going to dance once. It should also be completed and turned in even if you are participating in a demo dance where the hosting party has their own insurance.  Our insurance does not cover you while you are traveling to and from your special location – it covers your dancers at your dance event.

If a dancer is injured during a Federation dance, an Accident Report Form needs to be completed and submitted to our Insurance Chairman Kay Rogers through the insurance link on the Federation website (www.squaredance.gen.or.us/insurance/AccidentForm.html).  For those times you do not have internet access, an Accident Report Form (www.usda.org/insinfo/accident%20report%20form.pdf ) should be kept in your dance halls, in your cash box, or carried with you to a special event in case of an injury. Once you have internet access, submit the information that you gathered through the link.

Remember to check out the Educational Seminar during Summer Festival in Seaside on how to use Social Media to promote your club’s activities.  Amanda Roberts will be presenting her seminar at 10:00 am Saturday morning. If you haven’t registered for Summer Festival all ready, look for the registration form in this month’s OFN and register. You don’t want to miss out on the fun happenings!!

Remember to submit your dance flyers to the OFN before the 18th of each month.  Dance information and or flyers can also be posted to the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs Facebook page for additional exposure any time before your dance.

Youth Report

During Oregon’s Summer Festival, July 28-30, the youth and dancers who are young at heart have many fun activities scheduled.  On Saturday, we will have a box picnic behind the Convention Center at noon, followed by a scavenger hunt, dancing on the beach and a lively after party in the Main Hall at 10:00 pm.   If your family or youth needs assistance purchasing ribbons, scholarships are available. Contact me at Kathy@4roberts.us for information.

The Youth will dancing at the Oregon State Fair on Saturday, September 3, from 12:00-1:00 pm. This dance is open to all youth and dancers who are young at heart and like to dance to upbeat fun music.  Please contact Kathy@4roberts.us if you would like to join us.

Summer Festival

Oregon's 2016 Summer Festival will be held at the Seaside Convention Center, July 29 to 31, 2016. You may download your registration form right here. Seaside hotels fill up quickly in the summer, so get your reservations in early.

The young and young-at-heart will want to check out the set of special youth activities at summer festival, including a tip on the beach Saturday afternoon.

Our potluck club picnic was on Sunday, June 26th on the lovely grounds of Suzanne's country house. We thank her for her generosity in letting the club use her place again. There was croquette and hay rides, blueberry picking, and the dog race game where the smallest dog kept winning. We had about 35 attendees and danced to Lennie Ludiker and Jackie Gale and the food was very good.

We keep being surprised at the busloads of people who have been showing up at our club doors at our dances. It is great to see the hall half-filled or full quite often. The last dance in June we were happily surprised by the Corvallis Squares who opted to take back their banner from us. And the first dance in July we were surprised by a couple from San Luis Obispo, California. That was fun.

In August we will be having two wonderful dances, Mike Halley will call at our August 12th dance, and Jim Voll will call for our August 26th dance. Jackie Gale will be doing the cueing as usual. (And her cueing is never "usual." A rare one is she.)

In September Jim Hattrick will become our club caller for our second Friday dances. To celebrate our new caller and to encourage a big group of dancers, our Sept. 9th dance will be free. Come and enjoy.

Square Dance Lessons:

Starting September 13th, Wolf Pack, the Whirl-A-Ways, Single Trees, and Danebo Circle 8 will be combining to hold square dance lessons at the Emerald Empire Square Dance Hall in Springfield. Sandy Harris will be giving lessons at 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. teaching the basic 51 dance moves. The lessons committee plans on having this done 4 times during the dance year. After the first lessons are completed and a new session is started again, mainstream will be added so those from the first group of lessons can angel the next group then stay for additional lessons to complete the mainstream calls. We think this will work and give people the support they need to do well. We hope to have a few B-51 level dances as well.

Corvallis Squares - Link
Fourteen Corvallis Squares members had a great evening dancing to the calling of Jim Hattrick and the cueing of Jackie Gale on June 24 in Springfield. We won a banner back from the Single Trees, and are ready for another summer visitation.

Our club is dark for July and August and we're happy to see there are a variety of dances up and down the valley.

We're already planning for our fall lessons. We've found that most new dancers have been personally invited by a club member, so we're focusing on that and also making business sized cards with lessons information to hand out.

We recently participated in a square dance demo at the Grace Center, and once again, we hope to dance a demo at the Corvallis Farmers' Market. We hope you're enjoying summer in Oregon; some say nothing else can compare! Karen Karplus

Sad news first. Mary Slocum and Larry Jacobsen, past and present members of the Golden Squares, recently passed away. They will be missed.

Our annual pajama dance is August 1 and August 29 is pie night. We will be dark September 5 on Labor Day.

Our Wednesday afternoon plus workshop has been cancelled until September 7.

We would like to thank all the visitors who have attended our dances. Without you, we would not have enough dancers for the dances. See you in a square somewhere. Dolly Yarnell

Our club will not be holding our regular dances in August because the Polk County Fair (the BEST county fair ever) will be going on. Our club members work for the fair taking admission fees and counting attendance, and for this we make the money to cover our class costs. This sure beats a baked sale to raise money.

Starting with our dances in September, we will be changing our dance time to have pre-rounds (our first dance of the month) or pre-plus (our second dance of the month) at 7:00 p.m. and our dance will be held from 7:30 to 10:00pm.

Look for the flyer, next month, for our Sock Hop which we will hold at our second dance in September. Happy Dancing. Linda Neuschwander

Another month has flown by and we are sailing through the Tango lessons. We lost one couple to bone spurs but they will be back in the fall, hopefully all healed and ready to go.

We are collecting thoughts on what rhythm to dance for fall lessons and have one kind of selected, but will wait for a bit yet before announcing it.

We had 11.5 couples at our birthday dance and Ray and Virginia Walz came by to say hello and catch up with friends. Nice to see them.

July and August have three dates that Cheryl and Geof are out of town, so Jeanine Norden and Christina Corelli will be filling in for her. Hope you can join us for some fun with them. Marilyn Schmitt

Good Summer to All.

We have had a great time with our dances this summer.

On July 1 we had a visit from Bill & Greta Luper from Jacksonville, Florida. They chose our club to complete their quest of dancing in all 50 states. They drove from Florida to Salem. Whew, a long trip to be sure. The club presented them with a handmade card by Lanie, Jo had dangles made for them and Harriet ordered a special cake. It was a fun evening.

Look for their picture with our caller Randy Dibble.

We are dancing the 1st and 3rd Fridays in August so please come join us in our air conditioned hall.

See you on the dance floor.

If you're reading this before July 22nd, please join us for our annual Dance Under the Stars, Friday, July 22nd, at 7:30 on the tennis courts at the corner of Howard and E. 6th in Newberg. Last year there were more than 10 squares, which makes it a ton of fun. Wear your tennies!

Our fifth Saturday Advanced Dance will be held as scheduled on July 30 from 7 -9:30 at The Estates Auditorium in Woodburn.

Two July parades included Valley River Dancers: the St. Paul Rodeo Parade and the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival parade. We love showing off our fancy footwork!

We are inventing a new look -- hula in petticoats! Join the fun at our Luau Dance, Friday, August 26, from 7:30 - 10:30 at the Newberg Community Center.

Willamette Squares held its regular monthly square dance the fourth Saturday evening in June at the Salem Square Dance Center. The dancing was lively, the refreshments were plentiful, and as usual everyone had a great time! We are looking forward to our Watermelon dance which is always refreshing and fun.

Among our summer activities is the annual square dance picnic. And it is time to be recruiting potential square and round dancers for lessons coming this fall. Jodee Howard

Our Starlight Parade floats were a huge success with 35 dancers from all over the Willamette Valley. Our dancers were from Eugene, the Portland area, and Vancouver Washington clubs who rocked the night away. We had Youth from Silverton and Boring on the back float with some very high energy dancing. The front float had over 2 squares, who rotated in and out. Everyone danced to the excellent calling of Scott Zinzer.

It was a hot evening and the thermometer had hit 101° before the sun had set. But everyone riding on the float had a fun time while dancing and while waving at the huge crowd.

Terry and Sandy Heiken let us use their pickup as a Tow Vehicle. Their son, Brian Heiken, drove the pickup while his wife, Ali and sons, Jesse and Austin blew bubbles at the crowd. Thanks to the Heikens for their generosity!

Danny and Carol Williamson are members of the River City Riders. They rode their "Horses" in the Starlight Parade and were a huge hit with the kids and the young at heart. The Williamsons had a great time "Horsing around"!

We believe that we reached our objective when we demonstrated to the crowd just how much fun square dancers have while dancing to some wonderful music. The announcers kept repeating, Square Dancing is a Fun form of excercise, an excellent social outlet, and a mental challenge. And that Square Dancing is Friendship set to music. Fun was had by all!

It’s my turn to write the column again.

Every so often (about this time of year) we get questions on how it is we dance all year round, including the summer. Miss Fluff likes to say it’s so our members don’t forget to come back in the fall. The real reason, however, is that it is very profitable for us to dance all year round. We get dancers from all over America visiting us during the summertime, as well as local dancers who would not come to us during the other months.

We can also better plan our summer and fall activities if we don’t go dormant. For instance, Aug 16th, we will answer the call of our council to serve food at Burgerville on McLoughlin Blvd. This will provide monies for both our council and our own club, as well as great advertising. Most non-profits do have to have fund raisers, and summertime is a good time to do them.

Summer greetings from the Buzzin ' Bees. Our club is dark until September. We will start lessons 9/11 at the Hazel Dell Grange - specifics to come in the next newsletter. Our first club meeting will be 9/12 at the Peach Tree Restaurant in Hazel Dell. We eat at 6:30 with the meeting at 7:30. Our first dance is 9/17 with pre - rounds at 7:30 and Mainstream at 8pm. We dance at the Hazel Dell Grange.

Our club picnic is coming up on 7/23. We will meet at Bill and Linda Lundin's house again this year and we really appreciate their hospitality. It is a potluck and we will have a planning meeting after the food. Bring food and a chair and your ideas for next year. We have a bunch of great cooks in the club so this is always a pleasure.

Many of the Bees will be joining Mike & Debbie Combs for a campout at Silver Springs Campground on the weekend of August 12-14th. Should be fun around the campfire. Hope you are having a great summer.

Our club is planning to move our dance nights to 1st, 4th, and 5th Saturdays in 2017, not 2016. For now, we are at the Boring Barn, dancing every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays in 2016, with the exception of New Year’s Eve. This is a fifth Saturday this year, but it has been canceled. Sorry, for any confusion that error may have caused.

Summer is a busy time at the Boring Barn! On July 2nd, we had a great time and a good turnout at our community picnic and dance. The guys manned the grills for hamburgers, and hot dogs, and the gals dished up the salads, beans, watermelon, and cookies and everyone had plenty to eat. There was something for everyone, from volleyball to just sitting in the shade with a cool drink. Then, Darrell Kalmbach ably instructed the not-yet-dancers in some simple moves and got them dancing. Lonnie Sycks cued the round dances as we moved into our mainstream dance. There were lots of smiles and laughter and everyone seemed to have a great time. Many thanks to all the Cut-Ups who made it happen.

The end of July will bring our 5th Saturday dance for those not going to Summer Festival in Seaside. Several Cut-Ups will be attending the Festival, but those remaining behind, will host an all Plus level dance with Craig Abercrombie and Stephanie Lezano. We hope to see another good crowd at the Barn on July 30th.

In August, we are going to host a Murder Mystery Dance, August 28, 2016. There will be a “whodunit” play interspersed between dance tips. This is open to the public as well as dancers. Scott Zinser will be calling the dance portion and the Square Buster Players will be doing the play on Sunday afternoon from 2-5 PM at the Boring Barn. Come help us figure out who the killer is!

Our Plus Workshops with Scott Zinser will continue throughout the summer, every Thursday evening, then on September 15, we will be starting our new dancer lessons. The Country Cut-Ups are going to be promoting square dancing in many way this summer, including a demo at the Day in Damascus celebration at Damascus Centennial Park on July 30th in the morning, and having a booth at the Boring and Dull Day in Boring, OR August 9th.

River City Dancers - Link
It was just like “the good old days” when we welcomed over twelve squares to our June 11th River City Dancer Anniversary dance. It was a great honor and fun to have other clubs join us for the night. Plus we had over a dozen former club presidents and spouses. Thank you all who joined us! You made the evening all the more special.

Like all square dance clubs, we are hoping for a big class, beginning with an open “Community Square Dance” on Sunday, September 11th, from 5:30 to 7:30 at our hall, Milwaukie Community Center, 10666 SE 42nd & Jackson; Milwaukie (corner of 42nd and Jackson). As always, the first three lessons are available for beginners. Lessons are $6 per person.

Regarding our lessons,to lighten the load, our Board has decided to try a rotating leadership for classes, once they begin. Our membership has been wonderful at supporting the lessons whether they’re part of the designated leaders.

Rocky and I have greatly enjoyed being angels in the past. We try to attend as many sessions as possible. Our caller, Les Seeley, is great at enhancing their learning by introducing simple singing calls from the very beginning, so our new dancers have fun while they’re learning. We’ve been lucky to have great support from our membership, enough so that we can usually pair up two angel couples with beginners.

Our Caller Selection Committee are booking guest callers through the second dance in February 2018. By the end of October 2017 the committee will present the Board with their three top selections to present to the membership.

As I write, we’re looking forward to our first Diamond Lake Festival (all these years I have been dancing, I have never been able to attend). Then the following week, we’ll be in Seaside for the Summer Festival, which is our “official visitation” for July.

Thank you to those who make these festivities happen (by the way, they don’t just “happen”; we all know they take a tremendous amount of work!)

Speaking of “work”, I hope every club is thankful to their club editor. Newsletters are so very important. I remember many years ago (this was many, many years ago) when I was editor for our club, and I had to practically beg our current president for his report. When I finally got It (in the snail mail, no less) I had to retype it on my trusty TYPEWRITER (what’s that?) and literally cut and tape the thing together, being careful to catch all the president’s errors first, which were many!

Our River City Dancer editors have spoiled us. Phillip and Michell Wood do a fabulous job every month. We save a lot of money and time by electronically “mailing” our newsletter by PDF files, but they still take a huge amount of time and talent. They’re all the better for Jolene Cummings’ fabulous photos. Those who don’t have access to email still gets theirs through the “real” mail.

By the way, I also hope we all take time to thank Tim Roberts for saving our state of Oregon newsletter. I believe many of us would still like to get the hard copy every month (I do) but that had become less reliable and too expensive. So thank you, Tim (and wife Kathy, too) for making it happen every month.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
The Ramblers had a wonderful visitation to the Floor Dusters in Yoder on May 30. This visitation stemmed from the April 29 Portland Area Council dance, where the Floor Dusters drew the Rambler’s banner out of the hat. We brought 9 dancers down to Yoder and won our banner back. We even learned a new dance to the tune of Mairis Wedding! What fun! We greatly appreciate the hospitality and friendliness of the Floor Dusters and their callers, Tim Kane and Anthony Egan.

The Ramblers have welcomed an enthusiastic and fast-learning group of students to our square dance summer school. Through Week 5 of lessons, they have already learned 36 calls. We look forward to having a full square of new Mainstream dancers in the fall.

A small but intrepid band of Ramblers braved oppressive heat on June 4 for our final monthly dance before our summer break. The official high temperature in Portland that day was a record-setting 98 degrees. We wilted but we didn’t succumb. If this weather keeps up, we may start a Bikram Square Dance Club. Talk about cutting edge!

We don’t hold our usual monthly dances in July or August. However, we will be hosting a special community dance at the Q Center, 4115 N. Mississippi Ave., Portland, on Saturday August 20, from 7-9 pm. No dance experience is necessary for this event. We’d love to have you join us with our caller, Ian Craig, as we bring square dance to an uncustomary urban venue.

With our light dance schedule in July and August, we will have boundless energy for our return to dancing on the second Saturday in September. That’s September 10, consistent with the move of our monthly dances from the first to the second Saturday of each month. We alternate Mainstream and Plus tips from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at the Milwaukie Grange. All dancers are welcome, and we love visitors!

Summer has been busy for us. Our July 1st dance was cancelled since so many of our members were going out of town to celebrate. I tried to get the word out to our regular visitors about the cancellation. We also had to cancel our JULY 22nd dance because the lodge has first chance to use the hall. Again we tried to get the word out. We apologize to anyone getting the word.

Bob Keller is busy making plans for a fantastic picnic in August.

Stella and Jesse Tuft began the Tumbleweed Square Dance Club 44 years ago right after Stella completed her callers’ class. It was the first daytime square dancing. The people loved dancing during the day and not having to drive at night for a dance.

Don't forget we have air conditioning and everyone get to dance.

The Charlie Brown Squares had an absolutely amazing turnout for our Cowboy Round-Up Dance with special guests Eric Henerlau & Dan (Allison) Drumheller on July 16th. 105 dancers celebrated with lots of smiles and laughter!! We did the Post Dance and it was met with even more laughter - it was so much fun. Those that did the post dance received a "Saturday Nite Post" dangle. The Star Promenaders from Medford took home the award for "Most Shoes on the Floor." The decorations were fabulous with everything from boots and saddles on the floor to bridles and ropes on the walls; as well as barn doors and a hangman's rope. Check out our website and/or facebook page for pictures!! We are so thankful to everyone that came from near and far to enjoy this special dance with us!!!

We were dark for the 1st Sat dance on July 2nd, however we had 3 Squares for a Patio Potluck Party and Demo dance at PhilBilly's (Phil Ramey). Phil & Chuck Simpkins called and we enjoyed lots of fun dancing, food and friendship.

We will be dark for the month of August due to the County Fair, but the Charlie's always enjoy traveling to different dances and festivals during the month. Next up is Diamond Lake Festival hosted by The Star Promenaders & featuring the talented Jet Roberts & MaryAnn Callahan (& Craig Cowan) July 20-23rd. The following week is Summer Festival in Seaside. Then the Rogue Squares of Medford will celebrate their 1st birthday on August 6th.

The next TVC event is our annual Hahn Barn Dance on Sunday August 21st. Terry Halley will be our caller/MC with Julie Stiers as our cuer/MC. Other callers and cuers will be invited from the floor to call or co-call a tip. This is always a fun dance with a country social potluck picnic before the dance in the shade beside the lake. The potluck picnic begins at 5:30 and you have about an hour before pre-rounds begin at 6:30 at the barn. Mainstream with every third tip Plus is scheduled to begin at 7:00PM and go until 9:00PM.

Gary and Bette Hahn graciously offer their hospitality each year and it is always a grand time! Their farm is located at 37280 NW Hahn Rd, Banks, OR 97106. You may refer to the flyer in the OFN Flyer section for additional details and driving directions. Call Kathy at 503-590-4187 for more information.

This dance has always been a great success because of the many dedicated volunteers who help make it happen. We need set-up and clean-up crews for the picnic. We also need to clean the barn the morning of the dance. It is a great time to get to know other club members - so please recruit people from your club to help. Our 5/28 GREAT BALLS of FUR dance was a huge success, especially for many of our elderly, disabled, and/or needy neighbors in Clark County whose pets will benefit from cat and dog food contributions donated by dancers to Second Chance Companions "AniMeals" Program. We had 9 squares in attendance, and lots of pet food was donated. Thanks to all who attended!

August looks like another great month to dance the evening away. On the 13th our caller/cuer will be Craig Abercrombie. Our Jim Hattrick will do the calling and cueing on the 27th.

Our mainstream lessons continue, and we even gained a couple new students. It is our hope that summer lessons will help increase the number of students who complete lessons and stick with the activity.

Speaking of new dancers, some of our new dancers who recently joined our club are heading up a clothing sale we are planning for the 27th of August. We have been requesting clothing donations and have received some beautiful clothes! If you have some used square dance clothing, please let someone with our club know or drop off the clothing at one of our dances. We will happily launder the clothing and our sewing experts will even make minor repairs. If you are interested in getting that special outfit, come dance with us on the 27th and get some good deals on shirts and skirts and who knows what else.

We will be dancing throughout the summer, but due to a special event on 9/10 and the grange being unavailable on 9/24, we will be dark in September. On the 9/10 many of our members will be participating in a square dance Flash Mob at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup. Our multi-talented Secretary, Melissa James, who doubles as a professional tour coach operator, will be driving 50 square dancers to the fair, where we hope to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of square dancers to participate in a Flash Mob. All participants will also receive all-day passes to attend the Fair on the day of the flash mob! After enjoying the fair, we will be stopping to dance in Olympia with the "Olympia Do-Si-Dos," where our Caller, Jim Hattrick, will be calling that night. Does it get any better than that?

On 9/24, the cloggers will be using the grange. What to do? Visit another club, of course! We hear that national caller Al Frazier is calling with Craig Abercrombie at R Square D that night. They can expect some guests!

National Caller DAN NORDBYE will be in town in November. He will be calling our dance the Saturday after Thanksgiving, 11/26, which will be our 1st annual "Turkey Burn-off Dance," with Julie Stiers cueing.

June means celebrating summer and celebrating our students who are learning the finer points of Plus. Thank you, students, for getting the rest of us back in shape and keeping us on our toes. Now you know our secret; we make mistakes too, but we enjoy dancing and having fun so we keep on going no matter what.

Hope you heard he unusual news that we were dark July 4th. Too many people had other commitments to other July 4th activities. Hope you had a wonderful 4th!

Six people from our club attended Nationals this year which was excellent as there were only twenty nine from Oregon. Although Tony Oxendine and Jerry Story were callers, the goal of 4000 attendees was just eight people short.

On Memorial Day, May 30th, we had a big turnout of dancers who did not want to miss the opportunity to dance.

You are invited to attend our potluck picnic at Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro, August 10th, 3 pm to dusk. Please RSVP to 503-629-7054 with number of people by August 7th so we can order enough chicken for all.

All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons: Rounds 1:00 - 1:30 (Rounds will start at 1:15 during lessons); Plus 1:30 - 3:15 PM, Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. We dance on most holidays too so if you have a day off come join us. Our next holiday dance at Aloha Grange will be Labor Day September 5th. Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing, please plan on joining us

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

The Hayshakers and the Wave Steppers continue to support one another in our dances. It really helps both of the clubs. We will continue to do so. Be sure to call up before you plan your visit. Thanks.

Remember, the Seaside Sashay is coming up in October. Be sure to look for the flyers either at the dances or on line. We hope to see many of you there.

Hoedowners - Link
What happened in June for our Hoedowners; weddings, graduations, recitals, anniversaries, all the family festivities of early summer? We hope you had a chance to enjoy these rituals with your friends and family. Did we dance? Of course! No one wanted to miss the annual Strawberry Delights dance and those fabulous Oregon strawberries.

Whoa, and the on the 25th we enjoyed the Mr. Potato Head Dance. Is this the Mr. Potato Head of your childhood with big shoes, white gloves and odd hats? Don’t think so. Sally Duyck cruised multiple Goodwill stores and rounded up a multitude of the modern little fellas. The buffet table centerpiece was a huge potato head dressed as the villain in the Star Wars Saga. DARTH TATER! He wasn’t too intimidating as everyone gathered round for the baked potato bar and toppings.

In September we’ll be having our Back to School Dance Sock Hop on the 10th. Please bring school or lunch pails supplies to donate.

Our falls lessons begin, Wednesday, Sept 21st. The first two lessons are free. Daryl is a wonderful instructor and even if you’re an experience dancer, you can brush up on your mainstream. We’ve added a few new updates we think you’ll enjoy.

September 24th will be our Farmer’s Market Dance. Food will be fresh from the field. Farmer’s tans are welcome and encouraged.

By this time all the regular readers of this column have noted that almost every report includes a reminder to check our website for changes, especially for weather that makes dancing at the grange impossible. June Fourth's weather lived up to the forecast, and we had to cancel the dance. June 18 had perfect dance weather. We hope that all the rest of the summer dances go as planned, including our Root Beer Float Dance August 6 and our Watermelon Dance September 17.

Keep an eye on our website, though, just in case!

Wow, what a fast this month has been, lots of energy and excitement around the love of Square Dancing.

We started the month on June 8th with a theme for the dance as "Take Me Out to the Ball Game". There were even peanuts and cracker jacks! Hot dogs were served at break. There were lots of Mariner Jerseys in attendance. Craig Abercrombie had good baseball themed music for everyone to dance to, Lonnie Sycks joined in with some good round dancing.

Longview hosted the State Square Dance Festival the weekend of June 16th-18th. Thursday evening (16th) at 7:30 the Trails End Dance started with 1/2 hour of rounds, followed with 2 hours of Main Stream dancing. The Front Porch Trio (Craig, Jim and Adam) called and the word on the street was that it set the tone for the entire weekend. The Trails End dance was hosted by the R Square D club and was well attended and the calling of the Front Porch Trio couldn’t be beat.

On Friday and Saturday evenings there were FREE square dance lessons in the Agriculture Building. Dave Harry was calling/teaching this dance. Starting on Sunday June 20th R Square D beginner lessons started at the Kelso Senior Center, 6 new students joined because of the free lessons that were offered at the festival.

On June 22nd R Square D had a demo dance Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 2 PM at Delaware Plaza. Wednesday night dance 7 PM. was our Strawberry dance. Julie Stiers was cueing and Craig Abercrombie was our caller.

August finds the R Square D club dancing on the 13th to a Hawaiian themed dance with Ice Cream Sundays. On the 24th we will have our yearly back to school dance and everyone is asked to bring school supplies to be donated to local schools.

R Square D will be dancing the 2nd and 4th Wednesday June, July and August. Summer dances will start at 7:00 with 1/2 hour of plus, followed by Main Stream dancing. Lesson for the summer are on Sunday nights from 6:00-8:00.

Many thanks go to Ron and Lynn Waliezer for hosting our monthly meeting.

For more information about the R Square D club please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. The Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

We had 43 dancers for our July 1st dance celebrating birthdays for KC and the U S of A. The dinner BBQ before the dance was eagerly consumed then we all slipped upstairs to dance away the night. Our visitors and members had a great evening of dancing and celebrating friendships. Thanks KC and Bev for a wonderful evening.

Speaking of KC, KC and Linda invited the club to their home for a relaxed evening of food and games. Now does that sound like a great evening? It was!!!!

Summer is passing us by quickly, but we are looking forward to our Aug. dances with Hot August Nights theme with KC doing all singing calls and Bev singing and cueing her favorites. We also are looking forward to our club campout down at the coast. The Toes have a great time together. Come and join us for a fun-filled month.

Join us Aug. 5th for our Hot August Nights Dance with all singing calls from KC. See you in a Square.

The mystery trip took place on June 25th on a beautiful, sunny day. The trip included many back roads including a view of Parrett Mountain and a boy scout camp located in the forest. The mystery trip included a tip called by Terry Halley at the Bull Mountain Farmers’ Market. Eventually, the trip ended up at the Willamette Squares in Salem. A big thank you to Deb Mandeville, Lynnea Loveberg, Betty Chipps and many more for a fun and successful mystery trip.

The Tri Squares are continuing to visit our square dancing friends this summer. Our next visitation will be at the Valley Squares On August, 6th! There theme is Summertime Fun. There will be an hour from 7pm to 8pm where new dancers will have an opportunity to show off their skills. We look forward to seeing all of our friends soon and at our dances in Fall.

Please join us for our Summertime Fun dance August 6th. Slake your thirst and cool down from the summer sun at our Root Beer Float dance August 20th.

We traveled to Garibaldi for our June Visitation. It was a lovely afternoon, and we had a relaxing time touring the Cheese Factory and walking on the beach, having dinner at Chinese Gardens before capturing a flag at the Wave Steppers. What a fun dance that was! We plan to return to the beach in August to dance with the Hayshakers.

Our new class has nine students, including a pair of sisters and a three generational family. Everyone is making phenomenal progress! New dancers and students have a chance to test their wings during the first hour of our Saturday dances. They also have an opportunity to practice at the Family Dance Nights first and third Fridays at Aloha Grange.

Vicki Fotheringham, TVC rep and cancer survivor, organized a Demo Dance at OHSU Tuality Cancer Center. Thanks to Terry Halley for calling that demonstration and to the Valley Squares members who formed a demo square and then angeled the survivors who were eager to try this form of exercise. Vicki reminded us to be gentle with our handholds. This was the best demo I have participated in because so many of the audience members got up to try dancing - and they did very well!

At our Trophy Dance, Gary Monday, an international caller who currently resides in Seattle, created a lively and exciting choreography with a great variety of music, some of which arose from his roots in North Carolina. A wide variety of clubs were represented at the Trophy Dance, but Oaky Doaks walked off with the prize, having 15% of their members present. Runner up was B & B's with 10 percent. We hope that the metropolitan dancers show up in force to Oaky Doaks Trophy Dance because those numbers should be much higher. Too many of you missed a wonderful night and an opportunity to dance to such an outstanding caller.

Freshly picked Hoods were the main feature at our Strawberry Dance. With the warmer weather, strawberries ripened so early this year.

Hope to see you in a square sometime and somewhere, hopefully at one of our dances!

The Wave Steppers’ square dance and clogging demonstration at the Tillamook County Fair will be on Senior Day, Thursday, August 11th, from 12:15 to 1:00pm on the county fair’s Courtyard Stage. Club caller Joe Wrabek and clogging instructor Gwen Kiel will choreograph the dancers. We’ll have a couple of members in square dance regalia working the crowd during the demonstration handing out coupons for free square dance classes starting after Labor Day. There is usually a big crowd for events on the Courtyard Stage.

The club’s “County Fair Dance,” which happens the last day of the Tillamook County Fair, Saturday August 13th, will have caller Darrell Kalmbach and cuer Connie Clark; Connie will also be cueing at the “Elvis Dance” Saturday, Sept. 10th, with caller Mark Wheeler as Elvis. And the last dance of the 2016 season, a “Fall Dance” Saturday, Oct. 8th, will have club caller Joe Wrabek and line dancing with Gwen Kiel.

The Wave Steppers’ dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth Street (just a block off US 101, 9 miles north of Tillamook). About two-thirds of the second floor of City Hall is a dance floor, built in the 1940s for the old Firemen’s Balls.

The club’s free square dance classes taught by club caller Joe Wrabek continue on Wednesdays, 6 to 8 pm at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook.

June was filled with prep for our annual Buckeroo Round Up. We had Scot Byers and his lovely wife Erin call and cue for us. This was the second year they joined us for the Round Up. We spent three full days dancing and enjoying the company of dancers from around the area. Planning has already begun for the 2017 Round up! Mark your calendar now and plan to join us as we welcome Dan Nordby and Mary Ann Callahan!

We will be dark in July as we do some maintenance work and go on lots of visitations! We are all looking forward to getting back out on our own dance floor in August! We hope to see many people join us at the Douglas County Fair in August as we dance the nights away under the stars!
