Oregon Federation News
May 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 21 May 2017
President's Corner

As this article goes to print, the state meeting is still two weeks away. The ballots for voting for the Federation officers for 2017-2018 will be opened then. I am hoping that no matter who wins the contested positions, you will support them in their endeavors to represent you, the dancers, as they assist in carrying on the business of the Federation.

May also brings almost the close to the dance season and many clubs go dark for the summer. If your club does dance during the summer, remember to invite the clubs who go dark in your area to come and dance at your location. They will appreciate the floor time and possibly meet new friends and keep active. We don’t want to lose any more dancers.

There are dance weekends, festivals, national convention, and several different seminars in the upcoming months to pick from, to extend your knowledge in many areas of dance. Leadership, Roundalab, Choreographed Ballroom, just to name a few. You are welcome to register and attend any of these. If you need help in locating any of these, let me know. I will be happy to assist you.

It will be time to sign up for State Fair in the upcoming months also. I have made contact with them and let them know we would like to dance again this year. I have asked for a Saturday for the youth, Labor Day for those who work so they can attend and a day for Round Dance. Plus one other day for anyone who might be able to attend.

Stay tuned for more details as they get back with me with dates and times. Late June or early July. Mark your calendars to get back to me to see if I know anything further.

See you in my travels as I work on getting the last six councils visited before or by September.

Marilyn Schmit
President

Editor's Note

Thanks to diligent work by all of our contributors, the OFN process continues to work pretty smoothly.  My hope is to work out the final few manual steps so that it might be possible for someone else to take over the job eventually.  There are still a very few things that I have to do by hand.

We're now into the season of club elections and new officer time.  Remember to have your club's council delegate fill out the state directory form so we always have the most current information on how to reach you.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Our Fifth Saturday dance for April 29 has morphed into the Area Benefit Dance. The teen group from Silverton is the beneficiary. The teens are going to the annual Pacific Northwest Teen Competition. The competition can be quite spendy with travel, accommodations, food, etc. We are thinking this is the perfect way to use some of the money we all inherited earlier. Teens are the best way to promote square and round dancing. CCCA callers and cuers are on hand to call and cue a fun dance for all. 7:30 pm Pre-Rounds with squares at 8:00 pm. Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. You are all invited to benefit the teens. Thank you.

Our next scheduled dance is July 29. We have air conditioning in addition to the cushioned wood floors. Put this date on your calendar and come and be cool with CCCA!

Keep on dancin!

Our annual special spring dance is Sunday, April 30 with Ian Craig. 3 - 4:30 is advanced followed by our famous potluck. 5:30 - 8:00 is mainstream and plus. Something for everyone. Come and join us in Springfield.

We dance every Sunday from 5:30 - 8:00 with Tim Matteson calling all levels. Cushioned wood floor. One of our former members, Miyoko McDonald, has come back to dancing as we use the central overhead speaker, and she can hear it. Miyoko is now deaf in one ear, but with the speaker overhead she can hear. Yippee! What a blessing!

Happy dancing

Our Bunny Hop dance on April 1st was a lot of fun in spite of a low attendance due to some competition from the Oregon Ducks playing North Carolina.

Lessons continue to go well with a new class that started on April 18th.

Our next dance is May 6th when we will be helping our friends, the Boots and Sandals celebrate their 64th birthday. Lennie Ludiker will be calling this dance. Come and join us for the celebration.

Looking ahead to June, we will be having a B51/Mainstream dance. Bring your new dancers to this one.

CCC started another beginning lessons class on February 21 with nine participants. The middle of March we received some very disheartening news from our instructor of many years, Cheri Posedale. Because of some health issues, her chiropractor has requested that she stop clogging. Needless to say, that puts us in the position of scrambling to find another instructor. We are not quite sure what this is going to look like at the present so we have been looking at all options. If anyone knows of someone who is interested in instructing a clogging club, please have them contact Georganne Pfnister at 503-393-0138. In the meantime, we are looking at the possibility of advanced club members stepping up to instruct, as well as some other instructors who can't commit long term but are willing to assist. As a club, we are definitely dedicated to keeping our club active and alive, so we'll do whatever we have to do to make this happen. Georganna Pfnister

Our dances at Gleneden Beach on March 10 and 11 were a lot of fun, and we were delighted to have several guests join in the weekend activities, including a potluck on Saturday. On Sunday morning the sun came out and we were treated to a calm, warm day at the coast!

Looking ahead to May, we have two dances coming up. It looks like our newest dancers are getting some floor time, both at "home" and away, and we're thankful for the energy and enthusiasm they bring! Karen

Happy Spring! I hope everyone is enjoying more daylight. I sure am. As for Golden Squares, we just started mainstream lessons on May 1. As I am writing this before they start, I hope we have a great turn out. If we do, we sure could use some Angels and would love to have you. Our lessons are on Monday nights at 6 p.m. at the Estates Auditorium where on the odd Mondays our dance follows the lessons. We are looking forward to our Pie Night on Memorial Day. Hope you all are enjoying spring time and hope to see you in a square. Teija

April was a busy month for the members of Independence Wagon Wheelers. We graduated all 13 members of our square dance class and all of them joined the club. We are so happy to have our new members dancing with us because they really add to the club.

The day after our 57th Birthday Dance, we had our annual club meeting. This is the one time of the year when all members of the club can make motions and vote on any topic that comes up. We elected our new officers for next year (they take over on the 1st of May). Next year’s officers are: President, LaVerne Bennett, Vice President, Lee Ashwill, Secretary, Tim Hagey, Treasurer, Jim O’Brien, Membership, Ronda Whaley, Co=Membership, Dave O’Neill, Area Delegate, Neta Minten and Historian, Marilyn Schmit. We wish them all a successful year. Happy Dancing. Linda Neuschwander

April dances got into full swing with our first dance on April Fool’s Day. Our dance on April 15 is scheduled with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Always lots of fun! Our club is planning a raid on April 8. Then our Mystery Trip is scheduled for April 29th. Yes, it's a secret.

It is that time of year when we are preparing for our BIG STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL the first weekend of June. We have a Silent Auction, dancing on Friday and Saturday nights, potlucks, parade on Saturday morning, and breakfast on Sunday morning. So make your plans to bring your RV for the weekend or just come for any event. We'd love to see you there. Marilyn York

Our Cha class has learned the phase 3 parts of cha and will start the phase 4 parts of cha for April. We have a good class and it is fun to have them around and dance with them.

We are in the process of getting dues paid and voting for Federation officers all to be completed by May 1. The thought process for fall is stewing in the minds of our members and our cuer. Trying to figure out what we want to teach for the fall.

Our cuer has given us the dates that she will be absent for the rest of the year and our Vice President, Richard Smith, is busy contracting guest cuers for those dates. Jeanine Norden will fill two of those. Summer Festival Trails End dance and Thanksgiving will take up two more, so he has two more to fill. He does a good job.

Come and join us for a relaxing evening of dancing and learning a few new moves in various dances. Marilyn Schmit

Spring has finally Sprung!! Thank the Good Lord!! Our March dances were a great hit. Thanks to all who came out to make the Hobo Dance and the St. Patrick's Day dance a huge success. There was lots of "wearing of the green" for the St. Patrick’s dance. The Plus dance on March 31 had four squares for the Advanced level and over five for the Plus. It was a great turnout and a fun dance.

April brought us our 51st Birthday dance on April 21 and elections of club officers. Stay tuned for the results.

May 5 will be a Cinco de Mayo theme and May 19 will be a Regular Dance. June has three Fridays so we will dance three times. The 5th Friday will be a Plus Dance on June 30.

Just a reminder: WE DANCE ALL YEAR. Our hall is air conditioned so please come and join us through the summer months. See you all on the Dance Floor. Sheila Machado

Welcome home Mark and Laurel from their Mexican cruise to Cancun; they hadn't been back since their honeymoon many moons ago. Here's to many more memory-making adventures!

Preparations are already underway for our Berry Dance on Friday, June 23. Two berry good national callers are our headliners: Randy "Dibberry" Dibble and Dan "Nordberry" Nordbye. Save the date!

Our dances have been really fun this winter -- we have enjoyed company from other states and regions. We are only a hop, skip, and jump from I-5. In addition to dancing to Randy and Julie, no one but no one can beat Steve's brownies. Join us!

This is my final club report as secretary. Jan Amerson takes over in May along with our new slate of other officers. Thank you for serving. My last shout out is to my friend Tim Roberts who tolerates my transgressions. Dance on!

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares enjoyed hosting their March dance Eggstravaganza. Besides all the wonderful dancing, there was an egg hunt where prize filled plastic eggs were hidden throughout the square dance center for dancers to discover. (I, for one, know that the Easter bunny made a special sneak appearance when no one was looking to hide the eggs.) There was the usual array of foods at the buffet table, and a specially made punch containing raspberry sherbet that was cool and refreshing. Thanks to Sandy and Jackie for calling and cueing, to Nancy and Brice who made sure there were plenty of refreshments, Shari for the Easter egg hunt, the many hands that helped out where needed, and all who turned out to dance. It was an enthusiastic and energetic crowd!

Stay tuned for the Willamette Squares regular dance in May on the fourth Saturday for dancing around the maypole. Brice and Nancy continue doing an excellent job managing the current round dance lessons on Sunday evenings. The waltz lessons taught by Ralph and Marilyn are going great!

Despite declining health problems for some of its members, Willamette Squares is forging ahead. A club meeting is scheduled to determine our next new dancers' dance, and we are looking forward to a spring season full of dancing and camaraderie. Won't you please join us? Jodee Howard

Our treasure position will be jointly held by Helen Clark, Linda Johnson and Chris Nelson. Our elections Director, Gerry Gerrymander has certified the election results.

Another revelation that came out of our general meeting is that virtually all people coming back to dance after break are plus dancers; therefore, both tips after break will be plus tips.

As I write this, we have had 2 dry days in a row so there is hope yet that spring is on the way. We had elections in April and our 59th anniversary dance with KC Curtis and Roger Putzler. We also had guest cuer Patty Herman. Our new officers are President: Frank and Sharon Carter, vice president: Dennis and Julie Woods, secretary: Carol Zelmer, Treasurer: Bruce Prenzgruber. I want to say thank you in advance for your service to the club.

The theme dances that are coming up are: 5/20 George Strait / Western theme and 1/6 / 3 red, white and blue. The dance on 6/3 will be our final dance of the season. If it is hot we may try to dance outside in the shade behind the Grange.

Our caller, KC Curtis will be doing square dance lessons at Lakeshore Athletic Club in Vancouver on Fridays in August at 11 a.m. You do not need to be a member at Lake shore to Angel or take lessons.

Our next club meeting is Monday May 8th at the peach tree in Hazel Dell. 6:30 to eat and 7:30 to meet.

Respectfully, Debbie Broers.

We seem to be having an abundance of April showers, let's certainly hope all this wet and windy leads to May flowers and fun-in-the-sun times.

While you are contemplating the tail-end of April, don't forget to join the Tualatin Timber Squares on Wednesday, April 26th at the Winona Grange and celebrate their "First' Anniversary. How often can you do that...watch a club take its first year steps? They are going BIG and calling this their TRIFECTA Dance ... why? Not only is it their Anniversary, they are giving away the Trophy to the (Tri-Council) Club with the greatest percentage of their membership in attendance AND the dance is open to B-51 "new dancers" (since the snow and icy winter closed their New-Dancer dance). Janienne Alexander will be your Caller.

Think about your Mother on May 14th and decide to surprise her with a hanging flower basket (or) a trip to your local Fruit & Shrub shop for a flower choice (or) hey, "we're taking you to Sunday brunch."

On May 20th is also "Armed Forces Day," so remember to show appreciation to one who has served/armed their life to protect yours. We, the Chaps and Petticoats, will celebrate Armed Forces Day on MAY 19th - with Roger Putzler calling and Ken Pratt cueing. Sandy Shew, our member veteran, will present an entertaining program and our break will include a march/parade of service-flags. Come join us with Rounds at 7:30pm and Mainstream begins 8:00pm. We break at 10:00pm for potluck and Bruce Stahlecker, Sheriff, will share his words of wisdom.

See you in a square!

March brought elections for our club, and it went smoothly this year, as our board was all willing to serve another year and were re-elected. Ron Rasmussen is our publicity officer, Linda and Charlie Phillips serve as secretary, and Debbie and Dan Ragland continue as treasurer. First vice president remains Tom and Katie Cassatt, second vice president is Robert and Young Lumsden, and returning president is Marc and Bev De La Bruere. Our club has been able to increase our membership and increase our attendance at dances this past year.

Our move to dancing on 1st and 4th Saturdays instead of 1st and 3rd, in order to have less competing clubs on the second dance of the month, is going well so far. Both our February and March 4th Saturday dances were well attended and we had a nice visitation from the Oaky Doaks in March. We have been visiting clubs on our 3rd Saturday and having fun checking out clubs we have not been able to visit with our previous schedule. So far, we have visited the Happy Hoppers, the Oaky Doaks, and the Valley Squares.

Thank you to all who came out to our Murder Mystery Dance! Who knew our club president was tied up in the Italian Mafia scene and would turn out to be a murderer, but he was hanging out with a pretty rough crowd. Rumor has it, the cast had so much fun, they will do it again, but are writing our own farce this time! We had over 60 people in attendance, so it made for a fun time and a nice fundraiser for the Country Cut-Ups.

The month of May will bring our Mystery Trip to ???. Oh yeah, they won’t tell us where we are going!! But you can go with us on a bus for only $32 to cover food, fun, dancing, and whatever else we get into. Just a few slots left! The bus pulls out on May 13th.

Want a chance to honor another wonderful couple? Robert and Young Lumsden are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary with a dance at the Boring Barn on May 21st from 2-5 PM with Scott Zinser. We are also looking forward to our Father’s Day Dance with Dan Nordbye and Julie Stiers June 18th at the Boring Barn. We will have Plus for the first hour, starting at 1:00 PM and then Mainstream from 2-5 PM with every third tip Plus. This should be a fantastic dance!

Happy Hoppers - Link
The HAPPY HOPPERS will host our regular first and third Saturday dances at the Clark County Square Dance Center. The May 6 dance will be our club's 58th anniversary dance with the theme of "Fiesta de la Nocha". ¡Ay caramba! Guest caller will be Darrell Kalmbach, with Tami Helms cueing. As part of our on-going effort to accommodate Mainstream dancers, this special dance will feature Mainstream calling on every third tip. On May 20, we'll have a regular dance with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing.

On Sunday afternoon, May 21, our president, Melissa James, will be hosting a celebration dance in honor of her being cancer-free for 10 years. It's a benefit dance for the Kearney Breast Cancer Center. Please join us in celebrating Melissa's milestone and in supporting a very worthy cause, at the Hazel Dell Grange. Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing.

Our lessons are "dark" for the summer season, to resume in September.

In the month of May, the United States observes several things. There is National Military Appreciation Month, National Teacher Appreciation Week and Day, Free Comic Book Day, World Naked Gardening Day, National Train Day, Memorial Day and of course the favorite one of us all, Mother’s Day.

The Oaky Doaks also observe several things in the month of May.

On Saturday, May 6th, we will be observing the club’s 57th Anniversary with Guest (and former club) Caller George Hermann and Guest Cuer Patty Hermann. There will be a full potluck dinner before the dance starting at 6:00 pm with dessert being served at the break.

To show our love and appreciation to Mother’s everywhere, on Saturday, May 13th, we will be holding a Pre-Mothers’ Day brunch from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm in the basement of the Oak Grove Community Center. The menu will be - Biscuits & Gravy, Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, muffins, juice, coffee, tea. Cost is $8.00 - adults, kids under 12 - $5.00, under 6 free. Everyone is welcome to join us in observing our devotion to Mom. Please contact the Oaky Doaks in advance if you plan to attend so we can predict how much food to prepare.

On May 20th, the third Saturday of the month, the Oaky Doaks will be observing time travel as we go back in time and dance to the sounds of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Louie Armstrong, Artie Shaw, Count Basie and other famous bands of the Big Band Era. So join us as we get “In the Mood” to take a “Sentimental Journey” on the Chattanooga Choo Choo with Caller Mike Halley and Cuer Helen Halley.

Please note that not only have the Oaky Doaks changed their dance time this year but starting in May the admission to our dances has changed to $6.00 per person. We hope that this won’t prevent anyone from joining us.

Hope to see you across the square soon.

River City Dancers - Link
We are a lucky bunch of dancers in this Portland-Vancouver-Metro area, to have so many talented callers. River City Dancers have hosted some great folks as we audition replacements for Les and Paula Seeley. Thanks to all of you who have stepped up to the microphone to give us your do-si-does and aleman-lefts. And thanks to our equally talented cuer, Tami Helms, and her partner, Tim Keck, for faithfully carrying forward, as always. Tami, you’re the greatest!

Les and Paula have been in Arizona about a month, now, and it sounds like their lives continue to be an interesting challenge, from laying the tile in their house to dealing with the Homeowners’ Association. Les, we love to hear your stories…you wouldn’t want to be just another “boring” square dancer! Now Les has learned he needs cataract surgery on both eyes (one at a time, please!). You’re a walking medical miracle, Les…and you too, Paula. Keep it up!

Carol Mendenhall and her partner, Gene Meyer, continue to be an outstanding Visitation couple. We’ve enjoyed dancing recently with the Columbia River Dancers and we’re going for a a second “try” at the Silver City Squares (the weather betrayed our try last year!

We’ve enjoyed some great “theme” dances lately, like the “50”s dance called by Darrell Kalmbach, and the coming “Hobo” Dance, to becalled by Mark Wheeler.

And lest we forget, thanks to the River City Riders for all the fun, well-organized fundpraising events they perform. I especially recall the Jim Hattrick/Adam Christman afternoon dance at Abernethy Grange. Jolene and Ed Cummings, you and your “cowboys/cowgirls” are the best!

Quite a few of us went to the “Murder Mystery” dance hosted by the Country Cutups at Boring Barn. Rocky and I have never been to a “Murder Mystery dance before. It was well worth an afternoon’s drive. Scott Zinser kept it going as a dance. Cut-ups are famous for their fabulous food at break. A very rainy afternoon was made much sweeter by the company of good friends and the satisfaction that the real “culprit” has been caught! (Never trust a smooth-talking Frenchman!)

Spring is definitely here; and I, for one, am already tired of the rain. Looking forward to sunny days soon.

Charlie’s classes are going steady. We have a small beginner’s class; but those that are coming are having a great time.

Our September class graduated and are continuing with workshops to improve their skills.

Our A1 class finished and they are now workshopping and have also started learning A2 calls as well. We are all having fun and it’s one of our bigger classes.

We were dark on April 1st to enjoy the Roseburg Birthday Bash with Mike Sikorsky & The Crew. Those that went had a great time.

April 15th brought Steve & Valerie Murphy over from Klamath Falls for our Earth/Day Recycle dance. Almost 3 squares enjoyed Steve’s cueing and Ray putting a twist on the “recycle” call. Fun was had by all.

May 6th will be our “Ole’” dance with Mary Nutt cueing and Ray calling. Will be fun to continue the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

May 20th is our “Garden Party” Plus dance with Steve Murphy cueing & Ray calling.

The following weekend May 26-28th is the Boatnik Square Dance Festival and promises to be an absolutely wonderful time. Ribbon prices go up on May 1st; so why not take advantage of a reduced rate of $40. You can purchase ribbons online or send in your registration or buy a ribbon at dances. Hunter Keller & Randy Lewis are the featured talent, and you don’t want to miss it!! The committee is hard at work to make this a great time for all.

Congratulations to our new officers for the 2017-2018 year: President: Louise Voss; 1st Vice: Wanda Andrews; 2nd Vice: Joe Zimmer; Secretary: Rikki Lobato & Treasurer: Jeanne Lobato. Thank you for stepping up and helping our club continue and grow.

Eager Beavers - Link
The Memorial Service for Genevieve Churchill honored her for many accomplishments in her long life, November 22, 1911 to February 9, 2017. After working at Meyer and Frank for 21 years, she volunteered at Albertina Kerr becoming their longest serving volunteer, and while doing all that she square and round danced her way around the country, holding multiple official positions in the Federation. She was a guiding light and all that knew her miss her and her joyful smile. As part of the service her friends danced a tip on the dais. The minister said that was a first for the Church and felt the Lord was smiling.

Important Note: Celebrate Memorial Day May 29th dancing at the Aloha Grange as the Sunset Presbyterian Church will be closed.

Do not forget to call your mother or another relative on May 14th. They will be happy to hear from you.

Our Plus lessons are continuing with a dedicated group of students who are rapidly becoming proficient in the art of Plus. Our equally dedicated callers and angels are to be thanked and appreciated for their support in our effort to extend the fun of square dancing.

Officers for the coming year have been nominated and after voting in April they will be installed in May. We owe a vote of thanks to the people who are willing to step in and take on the jobs that make the club function. If you want to be appreciated then step up and volunteer for an office. Remember, “Many hands make short work.”

All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

It was a quick “March” through last month. Was it the endless rain that made each day melt into the next? All the inclement weather just made getting out and dancing all the more fun and actually necessary for one’s mental health. On March 11th we held our Potato Head Dance. Thanks to the B&B’s for their square that attended and we all dined on our baked potato bar.

On the 25th was our Spring Fling Dance. Once again Mother Nature disappointed with uncharacteristically cool temps but no rain. It was up to the dancers on the floor to celebrate the “hope” of spring and they did just that.

What’s UP next? On May 13th we’re holding our Hippy Dance. You remember don’t you? If you don’t, ask a teenager. They have hippy themed dances of their own and have definite ideas what to wear.

May 27th is our annual Red, White and Blue Dance in honor of Memorial Day and our military. Please join us.

Mix N Mingle - Link
Before we started Mix'n Mingles more than 32 years ago there was nowhere for singles to dance as Singles On Saturdays, nor was there anywhere for singles to dance plus as singles, and there were no plus clubs on west side.

Single dancers gathered, mostly from Fun Lovers and Circul-8n-Singles, and formed the club. We asked Bill Helms, the Fun Lovers caller, to call for us, Lindie came up with our name, and things were underway. Wanting to be inclusive, we formed as an individuals club, with everyone welcome. A number of us could dance either position so everyone could dance.

There are still four of the original club members who have maintained our membership. At our last dance a couple we hadn't seen on a dance floor for many years showed up at our dance. They had taken some refresher lessons and came to join us. Some of us knew them from long ago and some hadn't met them before. It was a joy to have Karen and Jim on the floor with us again.

R Square D - Link
Bring on Spring! R Square D brought in the Luck of the Irish with a St. Patrick’s dance on the 10th of March. We were fortunate to have Adam Chrisman come and fill in for Craig. Many visiting clubs kicked up their heals, Wave Steppers, Eager Beavers, Fairway Village, Cougar Squares, Harbor Haylofters, Happy Hoppers, Columbia River Dancers, Prairie Steppers, and Ruff and Ruffles. We danced 6 squares which was a full floor with another 2 squares sitting out. The dance floor never stopped with round dancing keeping things going between squares, Lonnie Sycks was our cuer. .

While Craig is gone Jim Raupp has been gracious enough to fill in for lessons on Wednesdays. Thank you Jim.

The 25th of March was our Spring Fling dance; it was a benefit for a non-profit organization called the Progress Center in Longview WA. Almost $300.00 and assorted toys were brought to the dance. Progress Canter was very grateful to the club for sponsoring them for this dance. The Caller for the evening was Renee Ruud.

Renee made the evening entertaining and fun. Visiting clubs were Cougar Squares, Ruff and Ruffles, Harbor Haylofters, and Columbia River Dancers. We danced 3 squares the entire evening. Lonnie Sycks was our round dance cuer.

The club meeting this month was hosted by Cliff and Charlotte Houghtlen. Charlotte served up the most amazing pecan rolls; it pays to show up for meetings. Thank you Charlotte!

It is not too early to get Octoberfest ribbons, ask most any member of the club and we can direct you to where to purchase them.

May will be a quiet month for the club. We will be hosting a Taco bar at 6:00 on the 12th; the theme for this dance is Fiesta de Mayo. Come and join us for tacos and stay for all the fun to follow. R Square D will go dark on the 27th of May due to Memorial Day Weekend.

For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

Our lessons are coming along well and we have a great group of students; that makes it fun for the “Angles”, too. We will finish the classes by the end of May and have a nice bunch of new dancers to dance with; at ours and at other clubs, too. Mike is working hard, so are the students, and they are enjoying it too.

Hope you have been dancing away all of your energy in our wonderful spring weather. The Toes had a busy month of March with our regular dance and the Luck of the Irish Dance. Thanks KC and Sandra Pinion. There even was a Leprechaun giving out Irish kisses. It was a fun evening for all.

We do miss Harlan and Bev Flint recovering from their health issues. We are wishing you both smooth and thorough recoveries.

April 7th was our Easter Bonnet Dance. We always look forward to special costumes and Bill Hults always comes up with the best hats. Thanks KC and Linda for fun calling and Julie Stout, stepping in to cue for Bev. You all are appreciated. April 21st is our silly but fun Ducky Dance. It brings out the best in us for a good time. Molly Combs will be cueing for Bev. Thanks Molly. Come and visit and join in with us to have a ducky good time.

Our Mystery Trip is April 22nd and KC and Linda are planning a relaxing and fun day for us. We are always tired after one of these but bring back such wonderful memories. We have decided to go to the beach for our campout this year. It will be in late August.

May 5th we are looking forward to our Cinco de Mayo Dance and hope you’ll come and join us at the Kinton Grange. We will follow up with our regular dance on May 19th. We love having visitors so come on down and join us for 2 evenings of great folks, music and making new memories all together out in a square at the Kinton Grange.

Please join us for our May Flowers Dance May 6th, with Mark Wheeler calling, and our Dancing Under the Sea (In honor of National Maritime Day) May 14th, with Janienne Alexander calling. These are the third dances for these two applicants for our club caller. Connie Clark is our veteran cuer.

In March members had a chance to hear the third of our caller candidates when Rene Ruud called the Read Across America Dance. Showing versatile interests, dancers also picked up some reading material in the book exchange. Renee's third dance is June 17th. We appreciate feedback from club members and other area dancers to help us make this important decision.

Janienne Alexander called the Lucky Leprechaun Dance March 18th. We were visited by a fun contingent of dancers from Country Cutups.

Both of our planned visitations were cancelled in March because we didn't get many takers.

Buckeroo - Link
Spring got off to a great start here in Roseburg as both the Buckeroos and the Timber Eights celebrated their birthdays! First up, the Buckeroos on Saturday night invited Mike Sikorsky in to help celebrate. There were 17 squares out on the floor dancing the night away! Visitors came from all over Oregon to help us celebrate.

The next afternoon, The Crew came down from the Portland area to help the Timber Eights celebrate. They called a great afternoon dance and we all had a fantastic time.

We are gearing up for our annual Buckeroo Round-Up in June. Mark your calendar now and plan to spend three wonderful days dancing here in the Umpqua Valley!

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
