November 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 November 2017
President's Corner

Many of our clubs will be holding dances this month celebrating autumn.  I’d like to encourage all of you to visit at least one other club this month, either on your own or as part of an official visitations with your club, a neighboring club, or your council.  All of our clubs are struggling to retain members and remain financially solvent and we need to work together to help each other. One of the best ways to do that is to visit another club and encourage the dancers from your club to go with you.  In the TVC about 4 years ago, we started encouraging clubs to visit all of the anniversary dances.  It was a slow start, but people started to respond.  Last year, promoting the anniversary visitations using social media, email, published schedules, and encouragement, the visitations really took off.  Delegates encouraged their club members to go along on the visitation.  After the first anniversary dance, clubs started really participating and the hosting clubs had from 10 to 13 squares at each of their anniversary dances.  This year (September-August) the attendance has been even better, with clubs reporting attendance from 89 to 111 dancers!  These numbers are thanks to the clubs in the council supporting each other.   The PAC will be setting up their own visitation schedule for all of their clubs’ anniversary dances in the near future, and I am looking forward to hearing about their success. If other councils or clubs are initiating a regular visitation schedule, I’d like to hear about those, too.  Well-attended visitations may make a difference on whether or not a club continues to exist.  Remember to let the club you are visiting know that you are coming if you are bringing a group with you.  If you are visiting a small club, consider bringing items to share during their break.  Remember, visitations being return visits, so it is a definite win-win!

Several of your OFSRDC Board members are interested in starting an official visitation schedule where we can come and visit your area for your council dances or special area dances.  During this month, please send me information on your area’s special or council dances so that I can make and publish an OFSRDC Visitation Schedule.  I hope to attend at least one special dance in all of our councils sometime during the next year and a half.

Editor's Note

Now that summer is over, we're getting club reports on a more regular basis.  Two councils had 100% participation this month, and another was close.

If you are planning to attend the 67th National Square Dance Convention(R) in Kansas City, MO, in 2018, and you plan to arrive in your RV, you need have your registration form filed before the end of this year.  Their block reservation will be released on January 5, 2018, and they cannot guarantee sites reserved after that date.

Publicity and Education

If you haven’t had a chance to register for Mid-Winter (www.midwinterfestival.com) in Albany January 26-28, please consider taking a few moments to do so.  They always put on a great program with outstanding callers and cuers.  If you are an experienced dancer, invite your new dancers to attend the weekend with you.  Sometimes all it takes is a simple invitation, and then you’ll wonder why you hesitated.

Our Education Seminar during Mid-Winter this year will be “Looking for Fun in All the Right Places”.  Remember when we attended a festival or a special dance and we came away with fun memories that have stuck with us through the years?  We may not remember which festival or dance, but we remember the Outhouse Race, the Suitcase Race, the time when the delegates whose council’s had the lowest attendance at Summer Festival had to eat cow pies (really brownies) during Summer Festival, the dunk tank, and … I could go on and on. Well, that is what this Round Table Discussion led by Dave Cooper and friends is all about.  We will be looking for ideas on how we can work together to help make dances more fun so that our enthusiasm bubbles over and makes other people wonder what we are up to and decide they want to join in, too.  The Round Table Discussion will be Saturday, January 27, 2018, in the Oregon State Room from 2-3:00 pm.  Bring your ideas and share them. The ideas generated will be included in the March OFN.

Summer Festival 2018 will be in the beautiful Rogue Valley in Grants Pass, June 22-24, 2018. They are busy planning an entire weekend full of dancing and other activities that are popular throughout their area.  They currently only have 20 people registered, so I invite you to hurry up and pre-register so that they can continue planning their fun activities.  In addition to a great dance program, they will have tours, dances in special locations, youth activities, and a lot more.  Plan your summer vacation around this weekend and stay awhile. Hope to see you at both Festivals!

We had our first fall Fifth Saturday Dance the end of September. We had a number of our callers and cuers on hand to provide a FUN dance for all.

Last June was the benefit dance for Wildlife Safari outside of Winston which is northwest of Roseburg. It was a huge success after having a year's hiatus. President, Linda Putzler will connect with the Buckeroos about how we can help with the benefit dance coming in June of 2018.

One of our members, Janet Geiger, came back with her dad, Clarence, from Florida who was not well and unfortunately passed away on the 9th. hey had left one day prior to the big panic just before hurricane Irma. We keep Janet and family in our thoughts and prayers. Clarence was the brother of Joy Pitts (Single Trees) and Melba Walker.

Another member, Kirby Goode, remains on 'in home' hospice care. It's been a long haul, but with the help and prayers of many friends he is hanging in there. We have a great caregiver, Jake Westra, who takes care of Kirby and Christina as well. Kirby has been on hospice care since November of 2016.

Our next scheduled dance date is December 31, New Year's Eve. Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli will call and cue. We are still debating about format, callers, cuers, etc. It'll be here before you know it though.

Keep em' dancing,

Christina Corelli, Secretary of CCCA

With the help of all our dancing friends we are holding our own and providing some fun activities in our area. Our September dances and the one visitation to Salem Swingin’ Stars went very well. A small but enthusiastic group of us carpooled up the I-5 corridor to visit Salem Swingin’ Stars’ Corn N Cluck dance, and we sure had a lot of fun dancing to Randy Dibble’s calling and Ken Pratt’s cueing. We missed Jeanine Norden who we hope will recover soon. We brought back a banner and encourage them to come get it back!

Jim Hattrick, who calls our first dance of the month, always does a fantastic job of mixing things up and keeping us on our toes, reviewing the basics in an innovative way so we don’t get bored, but improve our skill level. Jackie Gale, our club cuer, always cues her best and gets more and more people out on the round dance floor.

Our fourth Friday dance was called once again this year by Craig Abercrombie and his Texas friend, Al Frazier. We kept the Sock Hop theme going so there were lots of poodle skirts and pedal-pushers and white shirts on the floor. We added to the entertainment by having people bring in photos of themselves in their younger years and having people guess who was in the photo. This proved to be a big hit.

Altogether it was a really great month to welcome in the new dance year. We are looking forward to our November dances and hope to see more of our dancing friends join us. I am also hoping by the time this goes to publication that our president Larry Reetz, who had gall bladder surgery Sept. 25., is recovering quickly. I want to thank him for being so supportive of the visitations!

The combined lessons that started Sept. 26 are going well. More angels to help out the newbies would be appreciated whether from our local clubs or visitors from other areas. We need new dancers to keep the Emerald Empire area going.

Gaynor Hintz, Vice President of Single Trees

We were pleased to be dancing again to Kris Jensen, a national caller from Albuquerque. The Women's Retreat was the same weekend. A number of our club's women got to go and have a great time dancing, eating, etc.

Kris Jensen had done a demo at Sheldon Oaks where her mom and Kurt's mom lives. Two residents showed up to dance with us at the hall. Tim made sure they could dance during the evening and learn moves. They had danced previously and took to it like ducks to water. We are getting more guests showing up to have a FUN time with us.

We dance almost every Sunday at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. 5:30 - 8:00 p.m., all levels. Come join us. It's FUN! Please go to our "When and Where" page to make sure we are dancing. This is always kept up to date. Thanks!

Happy Dancing,

Christina Corelli, Member-at-Large

The turnout for the MWA Fall Festival was disappointing. Two squares danced while maybe two more squares were on the sidelines. We realize there were also several other events happening that evening so guess it was to be expected. We still had lots of fun with Leonard Snodgrass and Bruce Lowther calling and Sandra Pinion, Judy Russell and Stephanie Lozano cuing. Thank you to all who attended.

We really enjoyed our first dance in our new venue, the Palmer Creek Lodge! The wooden dance floor is lovely and there are lots of seats along the walls! There's also a gathering area with chairs and a table outside the entrance door where the elevator comes up. It has a nice kitchen and dining area downstairs as well. Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell visited to help make our evening even more fun. We hope to see more visitors in the coming months.

We also enjoyed the Mid-Willamette Area Fall Festival at the Salem Square Dance Center. There were two squares on the floor, lots of round dancers and nearly two more squares visiting on the side lines. Our great caller, Leonard Snodgrass emceed and Bruce Lowther also called several tips. Sandra Pinion cued as well as Judy Russell and Stephanie Lozano. Happy Fall, everyone! Carmen

Cherry City Cloggers have wrapped up the demo season and are now into our Fall beginner class. We have about 8 attending. Not a real big class but they are enthusiastic about learning to clog and doing a great job. We have some in the class who are going through a second time to refine what they learned last year.

Several of our members attended the Northwest Clogging Workshop in Vancouver the end of September and had a wonderful time. We are still searching for someone who would be interested in instructing classes. At the present time our more advanced members are doing a great job at keeping the club going, reviewing some old favorites, and teaching new ones as well. Georganne Pfnister

The New IWW dance year is off to a great start. We kicked the year off by celebrating George Hermann’s birthday at our first dance, honoring our caller with cake and an avalanche of cards.

September 3 found us at Maude Williams State Park for the annual IWW picnic – a huge success. Our September dances were well attended and lots of fun. Mainstream and Plus Lessons are well underway. Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall, and be sure to put our Veterans Day special dance on your calendar (Flyer in this issue of OFN). Our club dances on the first and third Saturday nights of the month. On Oct. 21 we have our Black Light Dance, which is always a lot of fun. Our caller is Charlotte Jeskey and our cuer is Jackie Gale. During October, being a part of the Alliance, we participate in the Timber Twirlers "Talk Like A Pirate" Dance and the Corvallis Squares Halloween Dance. These dances give our club the opportunity to enjoy dancing with our friends across the Valley. Look forward to seeing you in a square. Marilyn York

The intermediate level Waltz lessons continue with several students who carried over from the summer lessons. We also have some new students to our class who have moved up from Phase 2 Waltz so this makes a nice class for all. Those of us who already dance that level are re-learning some specific particulars to the movements. Stance, frame, direction, and positions are all being corrected, slightly adjusted, or renewed in case we had forgotten something in relation to a certain step.

We have a New Year’s Eve dance coming up. We hope you will put our dance on your calendar and join us for a relaxing evening of dancing, food, and friendship.

There will be no Showcase for our club this upcoming Mid-Winter. It is time to take a rest, get the students up to par and get them interested in doing a Showcase in 2019.

We dance on Thursdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Salem Square Dance Center. You are welcome to join us any time. Marilyn Schmit

Fall is here with cooler temperatures, crisp days and nights. We are dancing our regular schedule of first and third Fridays of the month.

We visited the Willamette Squares for their Birthday Bash on October 29. We have another visitation scheduled for November. We are having a blast getting together and going to other clubs.

We have the first of the New Dancer Dances on November 26 at the Salem Square Dance Center on a Sunday afternoon. A flyer will be posted soon.

Mark your calendars for our New Year's Eve Dance to be held at St. Vincent's Church in Salem. It will be an evening of Glitz & Glamour. Dress up and join us for a delicious dinner and then to dance the remainder of 2017 away. New Dancer to Advanced Levels will be called. The cost will be $18.00 per dancer or $35.00 per couple. See Lanie Rickard or Sheila Machado for tickets and further information.

As always, we look forward to seeing you on the dance floor. Sheila Machado

We had bad luck with our mainstream class this year, no students at any of our open classes. So we are going to try to have a plus class and see how that goes.

We had a good dance in October - Friday the 13th and Black Cat. Everyone who came enjoyed dancing to Leonard and Frances. Floyd cued for our September dance as Frances was visiting her mother.

Our November dance is also our Ham Dinner Dance. We are having a ham dinner available before the dance, so come enjoy some good food and stay for the dance.

Remember to get your teen festival pins from one of us youth as this is your entrance to the Teen Festival in May! They will cost more at the door then. See you at a dance soon. Petrina Buchheit

We have a small new dancer’s class but they are having a lot of fun with our caller/instructor Bruce Lowther. Judy Russell makes up our flyers and posts them in the OFN and on Facebook every month so look for them to keep up with all the fun themes we have. See you in a square. Sandy

Willamette Squares held their very own Oktoberfest! Gary Ohren in his lederhosen and Sandy Harris in her German attire brought some German flavor to the dance floor. Sandy called various German songs but more especially special music called the Lederhosen Polka that she ordered just for this dance. Food consisted of rye rolls, Oktoberfest sausage, sauerkraut, and as many mustards as you might want. Those of us who attended had a great time! The mood was lively and the dancing matched the mood.

We have a good start on lessons. We can always use angels if you are so inclined. We are looking forward to our birthday dance/Halloween dance. Costumes are enjoyed but not required. Jodee Howard

There’s been a lot spoken about Fake News as of late. As a public service, we will try to keep you informed about potential fake news. If you hear stories such as:

(1) The B&B’s don’t have the prettiest girls in the council

(2) Or the burliest of guys

(3) Or the very best snack food

(4) Or the best callers and cuers around

(5) Or we’re too cheap to pay a class caller

(6) Or that we don’t have the very smartest class

(7) Or that Lotta Fluff doesn’t exist

You can believe it is FAKE NEWS. Come on out any Wednesday night and check us out.

Since I missed the deadline for the last issue I'm including our summer recap. We had a well-attended picnic in July at Bill and Linda Lundin's house followed by a good planning session for the upcoming year. We also had a fantastic camp out at Silver Springs campground in August. I found out just this weekend that the campground was not destroyed by the forest fire that was up in that area.

Our new president, Frank Carter, presided over his first meeting. There are several changes coming to our format. We will be starting our dances at 7 p.m. with pre rounds and squares start at 7:30. We intend to dance until 9:30 and then have a break. We have two cuers coming this year. In November, Lonnie Sykes will start queuing for our third Saturday dance. In December , we welcome Dorothy Lowder back to the Bees. She will be our cuer for the first Saturday dance of the month.

We started + lessons on October 8th. We are doing them at 4 p.m. and the cost is $5. The lessons are at the Hazel Dell Grange and they are before our regular lessons. We could always use angels to help out with the class.

We are very much looking forward to our dance scheduled for November 4th because we are doing a black light / Halloween dance. We did a black light dance several years ago and it was a blast. I encourage you to join us and be sure to wear some white. We will have white gloves for everyone at the dance.

October is a busy month for the Cut-Ups and we will be having the annual Ham, Egg and Pancake Breakfast which you dancers so wonderfully support. It hasn't happened yet as I am writing, but the preparations are underway. By the time this comes out, it will be over and we will be thankful for you participation. This might appear just before our 4th Saturday Spooky Black Light Dance with Scott Zinser.

November will see us dancing 1st and 4th Saturdays as usual. The Barn is a fun place to dance, so come join us. We have mainstream lessons going with Scott Zinser ever Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 PM and can always use angels.

Looking ahead, we will be having a 5th Saturday dance in December on the 30th with Jim Hattrick. If you are leery of coming out on New Year's Eve, then join us on the Eve of New Year's Eve, for a fun dance. Details to follow. We will also be having another Murder Mystery Dance in March. This time it is an original composition. Let your curiosity drive you there!

Now that fall is officially upon us, everything we eat comes in a Pumpkin Spice flavor option. Not sure I'll try the Pumpkin Spice hot dogs, but someone will! Our lessons have made a complete circuit now and things are running smoothly. We start over the first Monday of every month with beginner, mainstream and plus. Shout of thanks to Nick Johnson who stepped up to be our second Evergreen Council Rep. We are still looking for another rep to the PAC. Our new webpage is up & running albeit with a few kinks here & there. Take some time to check it out www.Happy-hoppers.com and view the new article from Clark County Today featuring the Happy Hoppers and our wonderful caller, Jim Hattrick. We are so fortunate to have Jim and all the members that make our club so vibrant. November 4th we will be DARK for the annual Royal Romp. If you're up for a fun & challenging Plus weekend, you'll want to get signed up for this one. November 18th is our Pies & Presents dance. If you'd like to donate toys we'll be accepting them at this dance and also at our dance Dec 2nd. And of course our fabulous New Year's Eve dance featuring the Front Porch Trio will be coming up fast. We will introduce our theme soon and tickets will available to purchase. Mark your calendars for all the dances coming and I hope to see you across a square soon! Remember, we start earlier now, 7PM Pre-rounds and 7:30-9:45 Plus!

Our lessons began on Sunday September 10 with an energetic and enthusiastic group of new dancers and angels. They are progressing very well under the direction of their instructor Craig Abercrombie.

Our club is still using guest callers for our dances . Our first dance in October is October 14 with Renee Ruud calling . Our second dance will be October 21 . This will be our Halloween dance. And promises a "howling good time." The caller for that evening will be Mark Wheeler.

We dance every second and third Saturday and love having company. In September we enjoyed having guests from Country Cut ups and B'N B . We usually have a club visitation every month to visit other clubs. We still have banners from Chaps and Petticoats, Sunset Promenaders and Hoedowners and extend a warm welcome to them and all clubs to come dance with us. The more the merrier.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
The last report was written the middle of September, so a report on the Sept 29th Council Dance was not given. Unfortunately, there were several other functions at the same time. Among them were, The Medford Music Festival, the first day of hunting season and MaryAnn Callahan's Round Dance Weekend. We had a fair turnout and everyone had a good time. Scott Zinser is always great fun to dance to.

Now that new classes have started, PLEASE help our clubs by angeling. Angels are very important to the future of our clubs because they are the impression the new dancers get of the club. We need to help the newbies all we can.

At our last meeting, on Oct 10, we decided to try meeting on Tuesdays instead of Mondays, due to quite a few conflicts on Monday nights. We will revisit this schedule in April and see how it is going. We will keep you posted.

Don't forget to support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley.

The next Council meeting will be December 5, 2017 at Denny's Restaurant on Biddle Road at 4:30pm.

There are still "Learn to Square Dance" t-shirts available. I have quite a few 2x's. We have found the t-shirts are a great conversation starter.

The month of October has been filled with wonderful dancing & friendship.

New classes are going well with 11 students learning how much fun dancing is!!

We had 4 squares for our 1st Saturday dance on Oct 7th. Michael Kious from Gresham called for the first time at the Charlie's!! He was so excited - as he put it "a dream come true." Pretty cool!! It was also the 1st official cueing gig at the Charlie's for Rikki Lobato. It was nice to see so many smiles and everyone having such a great time!!

Our 3rd Saturday dance will be on Oct 21st and we are excited to have Scot & Erin Byars calling/cueing for the very 1st time at the Charlie's!! We are hoping for a great turnout and plan to have a great time. You still have time to come down (or up) for this great dance!! Will report on the dance for the Dec OFN. We are also looking forward to dancing to Lawrence Johnstone at the Rogues on Oct 20th (as well as round dancing to Mary!)

Securing guest callers/cuers might be a challenge - but it's been a lot of fun to see different faces up on stage and we are enjoying every dance to its fullest!!!

Our Nov 4th dance will feature Phil Ramey & Elaine Funk - this is our Mainstream/Plus dance with pre-rounds starting at 730pm. Nov 18th is a "traveling dance" - we will be "dark" at the Charlie's hall - but that doesn't mean we won't be dancing. We are road tripping it up to Roseburg to enjoy a dance with Mike Sikorsky. Promises to be a great time!!

We are very excited to be celebrating our 50th Birthday on Dec 2nd!!!! The fabulous Charlie Robertson will be calling & Steve Murphy will be cueing. This will be a wonderful celebration and we look forward to lots of visitors!!!! Look for the flyers!!

Lots of exciting dances coming up and we are all looking forward to them.

Happy Dancing!

The Rogue Squares classes are going great with Phil Ramey (Phil-Billy) teaching. We have 5 students on a regular basis and a couple who live in Alaska and come to the classes for 2 weeks at a time and then are back in Alaska for 2 weeks. The people who are attending, are having a great time.

The "Angel Cards" are a huge success. We have several Angels who attend both the Rogue Squares and the Star Promenaders classes, so they already have full cards and will be able to attend any regular club dance of either club for free. Good going guys, and thank you.

The Rogue Squares dance for November is on November 17, with Richard Lane from the Portland area calling. He is a great caller and we will all have a wonderful time dancing to him. Don't forget there will be Advanced from 6:30 to 7:30, pre rounds with Elaine Funk from 7:30 to 8:00 and Mainstream with every third tip Plus from 8-10pm. Come on out and have a great time and salute our Veterans.

The Rogue Squares are cooking up something for the New Year. Stay tuned to this station for further developments.

November, where has 2017 gone? It sure has been filled with good dances and lots of fun people. And still some to go this year!!! Check all the fliers at the front of this magazine.

Along with our regular dances on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, we will be meeting to eat and have fun. We are going to have a Mexican theme pot-luck followed by an evening of Mexican Train. If you have a set of Train dominoes, could you please diminish them to a 12 set and bring them. The more sets we have, the less people at each table. So bring some food and come have some fun. If you don't know how to play; come anyway and we will teach you how to play. Come and have fun and we may do it again and again.

The New Dancer class is having a Thanksgiving dinner and we hope you all come out to dine and dance. Our class is busy and still has over a dozen New Dancers. Frances is doing a great job as Class Co-ordinator .

A Big Thank You goes out to Roberta and Maxine for bringing in some nice items to be used as Door Prizes. We sure could use some more help in this department. I know many of you are clever and talented and we sure would like to give away some of your special gifts. Just bring them to a dance or a meeting or our Mexican Train Night...

The New Year's Eve Dance will be on New Year's Eve and there will be dining and dancing and we will celebrate Midnight with New York, New York. So midnight will be at 9PM Oregon Time. Mark it on your calendars and we will see you there.

I know that I have probably forgotten something again...seems like I always remember just after SEND. Oh well, next month!

Wait I Remembered...Both are celebrations! Don't forget that there will be cake and Ice Cream for all in attendance to celebrate November birthdays and anniversaries at our 2nd Saturday Mainstream Dance and Dann and Fay are throwing a 50th Anniversary bash in our hall on Sunday November 05 from 4 PM to 8 PM. See the flyer for details!!!

AND the slightly worn and offered for sale square dance clothes sale will begin on Nov 9th and end on the 22nd; so bring in your used clothes

Our Back-to-school dance was great and all of the supplies we brought in went to Danny and Carol Williamson's daughter who teaches in a rural part of Yakima. Carol said she was so very grateful to get them. Our second dance in September was canceled because the hall was reserved for the cloggers from this area.

By the time this is published we will have been dark so the club could enjoy time together dancing at the Seaside Sashay. The club even bought pizza on Saturday night for all club members that were there.

November starts with our Veteran's Day dance on the 11th. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling and cues will be from Julie Stiers. Then our Second Annual Turkey Burnoff with guest caller Dan Nordbye calling and Julie cueing again.

Remember we dance plus from 7 to 8 and mainstream from 8 to 10 with round dancing intermixed with both. The Hazel Dale Grange's wood floors make it easy on your feet. The CRD prides itself in making sure all get to dance. So, if you are a single you are always welcome.

Did you know that on April 17, 1979, the square dance became the official Washington state dance?

Fall is here with the usual on and off rain and sun. I am happy to no longer be watering my plants. Tomatoes are being shared by those good gardeners in our club. Thank you for sharing your surplus.

The Labor Day dance at the Aloha Grange was super well attended and we had six squares all having a great time dancing to our caller and cuer, Daryl and Yvonne Clendenin. It was a happy holiday crowd enjoying dancing and seeing friends from other clubs who had the day off.

Cedar Hills Market shoppers saw how much fun they could have by square dancing. On Saturday, September 9th seventeen members of the Eager Beavers and Hoedowners showed up to demonstrate and to recruit new dancers. Our up-and-coming new caller, Lane Clem, called for the first time to sixteen members of the Eager Beaver and Hoedowner Clubs. We were so good we had rounds of applause. Thanks to all who volunteered and to Lane who did not look nervous at all.

We were in Seaside for our beach trip this year, October 4th - 6th, which is later than usual but Kay Rogers found a good place for us. Everyone had a great time. We lucked out with the weather; every day was sunny and warm.

After a very successful Plus Class earlier this year we are repeating our program starting at noon, February 5th, Mondays, running into May. If you are thinking about learning or brushing up on Plus be ready to join us. We will have the same three great callers giving the lessons: Daryl Clendenin, Jim Hattrick, and Darrell Kalmbach.

We dance every Monday. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

As I look back on the whirl wind that was September, I can honestly say I don’t know that Hoedowners have ever been so busy.

On the 9th, Hoedowners joined Eager Beavers in a square dance demo at the Cedar Mill Farmer’s Market, entertaining their shoppers. The weather was splendid and dancers and shoppers seemed to enjoy the demo. Thanks to Lane Clem for calling.

On the evening of September 9th we held our Back to School Sock Hop where dancers were asked to bring school supplies to be donated. It was a special treat to have Rikki Lubats of the Grants Pass Charlie Brown Squares join Daryl on the stage to call.

September 10th was our annual Dinner Out where we have a chance to catch up on everyone’s summer activities and adventures. It is a wonderful evening to relax, visit with friends and gear up for fall.

Our fall lessons kicked off on September 13th. We are so blessed to have a large, exciting, and engaged class. They’re learning quickly and waiting to tackle their first dance! Thanks to our Angels who are investing in our new dancers. We’re still practicing trying to learn all those names.

Sept 23rd was our Farmer’s Market Dance. Dancers were largely split into two groups; those who dressed as day time farmers in work clothes and those who dressed as farmers heading to an old fashioned barn dance. Glad to see both interpretations. Our buffet table was laden with food fresh from the garden. Steaming corn on the cob is always a hit, fruit desserts and tomatoes were favorites.

Remember, Hoedowners will be dark on October 28th for the Seaside Sashay. Hope we see you across a Square at the Seaside Convention Center! If you are not going to Seaside, Daryl is having a Plus dance at the Aloha grange that night, 7 to 9:30.

Don’t forget the famous, infamous, take home a prize, Annual Hoedowner Turkey Toss which takes place November 11th. Ever tossed a 15 pound frozen turkey? Well, we haven’t either and will provide bean bags for the tossin’ and turkeys for the takin’ home.

Our dance on November 25th will offer a respite from the traditional Thanksgiving menu by hosting a soup dance. We’ll help you get moving after the Thanksgiving feast and ready to prepare for the holidays.

With summer over, we should make it through the next months without having to go dark because of the heat. Because of Royal Romp, it's time to remind everyone that we will be dark November 4th. We will be back with all the lights on November 18th. We look forward to dancing with our long time and newer friends once again.

This month the news from Jeanine is that she needs more healing time before she is able to return to cueing. We all wish her a speedy recovery and hope to see her back on our stage as soon as she's ready.

In the meantime, stock up on food for our canned food dance December 16th. Now is the time to check for sales of nourishing and tasty nonperishable goods. We have a place for it if you bring it early, too.

September we returned to our 2nd Friday, fourth Saturday dancing schedule. The 2nd Friday dance was a crazy t-shirt dance.

Our annual camp out was held at Vista park in Skamokawa WA. Members enjoyed camping in their RV's and yurts. What a fantastic weekend. The weather was perfect, the company was excellent, the bon fire was hot, and the food was delicious (as always).

On the 23rd we did a demo dance at a local assisted living home. Seven couples attended to entertain the residents. The residents particularly enjoyed watching their activities director participate in a square. Later that evening was our regular 4th Saturday dance. We danced to the calling of Craig Abercrombie and Al Frazier with cueing of Lonnie Sycks.

In November we will dance on the 10th and 25th. On the 10th we will be honoring our veterans with free admittance to the dance. The 25th is a Gospel dance, come and dance away your Thanksgiving dinner.

For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

Unfortunately the Annual Hahn Barn Dance was canceled because of 97⁰F heat and Eagle Creek wildfire smoke and ash.

We have been busy lately doing several visitations, including Valley Squares, Toe Draggers, Tri-Squares, and Hoedowners. The Club did a “demo dance” at the “Blooming Junction Nursery” near Cornelius, and it was fun even though it was outdoors and dancing on gravel.

Thirty Seven dancers went to our beach campout this year at Devils Lake RV Campground in Lincoln City; we socialized, put prizes together, square and round danced, went out to eat, and stayed in and had a potluck taco-bar.

Ken and Dianne have started lessons for phase two Waltz on Sundays at 4 to 6, and also intermediate workshop from 6:30 to 8, if interested talk to Ken or Dianne Pratt at 503-680-9175 home, or 503-503-640-0892.

We started Plus lessons on Sunday afternoons 2-4 with Darrell Kalmbach instructing, anyone interested are encouraged, and angels are welcome. We are located in Hillsboro at 267 E. Main Street, upstairs.

We plan on starting Mainstream lessons on January 7th at our Hall from 4:00 to 6:00 on Sundays with Mike and Julie Stout as the instructors. Please check out our new website at www.sunsetpromenaders.com

I so welcome Fall, rain and all. Our Anniversary dance was a complete success. So much fun with 116 dancers. Thanks everyone for coming out to support us and dance to the Wildcards. The next night was the State Dance with our own Kathy Roberts getting installed as the new State Federation President. She is a busy girl and we thank her for her dedication to square dancing. A week later was our Dance for the Cure. We still are counting the donations to see if we beat last year’s amount. The square dance community is a wonderful support group. We thank everyone for coming and supporting our friends with cancer.

Visitations kept us busy dancing with our Newberg and Tri Square friends. We enjoyed the TVC dance where the Wildcards called their last dance together. We wish you all well.

We hope you’ll all come out to the Kinton Grange Fall Feast on Oct. 29th from noon to 4 p.m. Dinner in or take outs. This is our biggest money maker for the year for our grange. www.kintongrange.org for details.

The Toes are looking into a winter retreat this winter. It’s a time of relaxing together as a club and just enjoying time off with one another.

November is our dance month where we are collecting canned food. Bring your donations and dance with us November 3rd for the Boot Scootin Boogie Dance with your western outfits and spirited dance moves. November 17th is our Thankful Dance and November 26th we decorate the hall for Christmas and go out to dinner when we are done. Oh how the Toes love to eat together, visit and just enjoy one another’s company.

The holidays are fun to get ready for and we continue on with our food drive so hope you will continue to help us feed the folks in need during this holiday season. See you in a square.

Tri Squares had a terrific anniversary dance on September 22nd and we'd like to thank everyone who came and made it so much fun! We had six to seven squares on the floor all evening, with national caller Adam Christman and our cuer Sandra Pinion. The plus dancers even filled four or more squares. And as a special treat, dancing with us were the presidents of the TVC, the PAC, and the Oregon Federation. Pretty cool!

Our B-51 lessons on Sundays from 3:30-5:30 will continue through November 26th. And on Sunday October 8th we added a Mainstream Workshop at 2:00 which is open to all square dancers for $3 a visit. So come spend a rainy Sunday afternoon with us at the Tigard Grange, and have some fun brushing-up at the Mainstream Workshop and later angeling students, too.

In November we will be dark for our second dance, which is right after Thanksgiving.

Please join us for our Tailgate Dance & hot dog dinner Saturday, November 4th. Scott Zinser is calling & Connie Clark cueing. We also have our Thanksgiving Dance November 18th.

September was a month where our members danced at a variety of venues. We weren't able to capture any flags because we were short of a square, but nonetheless you may have come across us at Wave Steppers' Elvis Dance, Toe Draggers' Anniversary Dance, or the Glenn & Sharon Driscoll benefit dance.

Our first Saturday Back to School dance called by Scott Zinser & cued by Connie Clark had six squares. Thanks to all our guests & to everyone who donated school supplies.

The Wave Steppers’ 2018 dance schedule is finalized. The club’s St. Patrick’s Dance Saturday, March 10th, our first dance of the year, will feature club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance coach Gwen Kiel. Joe and Gwen will also be doing the Mother’s Day Dance Saturday, May 12th, the County Fair Dance Saturday, August 11th, and the Fall Halloween Dance Saturday, October 13th.

The Wave Steppers’ Spring Fling Dance Saturday, April 14th, will have caller Jeannine Alexander and round dance cuer Connie Clark. June’s dance Saturday, June 9th, will once again be a Hawaiian Dance, with caller Mike Stout and cuer Julie Stout. And the club’s Anniversary Dance in September (Saturday, September 8th) will again be an Elvis Dance, with caller (and Elvis impersonator) Mark Wheeler and cuer Connie Clark.

All the above dances will be at Garibaldi City Hall (107 6th Street—at Acacia). About two-thirds of the building’s second floor is a dance floor, built in the 1940s by the Fire Department for the old Firemen’s Balls.

New for 2018 will be a BARN DANCE (we have a member with a barn, who has graciously offered it for the event); that will be Saturday, July 14th, with caller Darrell Kalmbach and cuer Connie Clark. Jodie’s barn is just east of Tillamook, and we’ll be supplying directions.

Square dance lessons taught by club caller Joe Wrabek continue on Wednesday nights at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook, and are free. (Joe also bakes cookies.)

Fall has officially arrived here in the Umpqua Valley. The leaves are turning bright colors and the air is crisp and cool. Another clue that fall is upon us is the beginning of a new cycle of mainstream classes here at the Buckeroo Barn. We currently have 43 students registered for our fall lessons. Mainstream classes are now closed, and we are helping prepare our students for their first “big dance” at Mid-Winter. We will begin a new class in February and hope that many of the current students will come out to angel and get even more floor time to practice.

Our dances this month were a lot of fun. Our first dance was a “Farewell to Summer” dance. We all had a great time getting back into the routine and enjoying the opportunity to dance without the high temperatures. Our second dance was a “Flower Power” dance with members dressing up like they just walked out of the 60’s and 70’s. It was great to see the creative costumes and remember the good old days of our youth! Both dances were called by Chuck Simpkins and cued by Neil Koozer.

We are gearing up for our annual wreath sale. This is our largest fundraiser of the year. Our members make beautiful wreaths to decorate your door over the holiday season. We are trying to be creative and add a few more opportunities to raise money to support the barn. In December, we will have our first ever Holiday Craft Bazaar on the 8th and 9th. There will be gift wrapping, visits with Santa, and concessions on hand during the event. Plan to come shop, or if you are a crafter, contact us to rent a table for only $20! All proceeds from fundraising helps pay our taxes, insurance, repairs, and general upkeep of the barn.

See you in a square,

Robin P. Faltersack
