A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 March 2018
President's Corner

Hallelujah! Spring is on its way. I hope all of you survived the icy roads that arrived unexpectedly in February. I am so looking forward to summer!

When summer arrives in just 4 short months, it will also be ushering in Oregon’s 2018 Summer Festival in the beautiful Rogue Valley. Summer Festival this year is June 22-24, in Grants Pass. Their featured caller is Dan Nordbye. Anyone who has attended a Dan Nordbye dance can attest that he puts on a great dance. He is challenging, yet easy to dance to. His voice is excellent and his calling superb. Steve and Judy Storm are well known full-time cuers from Utah. In addition to cueing and dancing, they also compose round dances.

In addition to the excellent featured caller and cuers and our very own wonderful Oregon callers and cuers, the Summer Festival Committee is working on a great Youth Program. As details become available, I will be posting them on the Federation Facebook page. They are also working on arranging activities around the area – making this not only a great summer festival, but the kick off to a fun vacation in Southern Oregon. If you are on the fence trying to decide whether or not to buy your ribbon, please buy one today. You will be glad you did.
squaredance.gen.or.us/content/Summer%20Festival%202018%20flyer.pdf. Ribbon sales are low and they need to know if you are coming.

See you in a square…

Kathy Roberts OFSRDC President

Editor's Note

As spring approaches, take the time to vote for your Federation officers for 2018-19. Your club secretaries should have received their ballots in February, and the ballots need to be mailed back to the Federation secretary by mid-April, because the quarterly meeting is earlier than usual this year.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Mid-Winter

Start planning for Mid-Winter Festival 2019, January 25, 26 and 27, 2019.

Publicity/Education

Our Educational Seminar during Mid-Winter in January was a Round Table Discussion on “Looking for Fun in All the Right Places”. Dave Cooper and Lee Ashwill led a great discussion on how to find and create fun in our clubs, councils & festivals. I would like to encourage you to click on the links to the handouts that Dave and Lee distributed during the session and read them. I’ve summarized their ideas and added a few below.

First and foremost we need to remember that square and round dancing and clogging are social activities. We are here to socialize and have fun. We need to remember to focus on what is great about our activity. Be positive. Don’t look for things that you think are wrong, look for ways to improve our activity. Focus on what is right, be positive and encouraging. Look to the future and stop worrying about how we did it in the past.

The club is the backbone of all square and round dancing activity, and our club members are part of our extended families. We can improve the strength of our bonds by playing together and participating in fun extracurricular events such as progressive dinners, mystery trips, beach trips, game nights, carpooling to special events or to other dances in the area. It’s OK to have extra events without dancing, just as it is also OK to add dancing to your extra events. You can also invite other clubs in your area to participate with you.

Before or after your dances, encourage people to get together for dinner before the dance, or for milk & cookies after the dance. Think outside the box for special dances, and advertise them. Try a dance where you turn out the lights and dance with flashlights. Advertise an amateur hour where people can try their hand at calling or cuing. Try a Running Bear dance challenge, challenge your dancers to a dance until you drop with no breaks during the dance, or end your special dance with a last square standing challenge. The key is, just have fun and enjoy each other. When people see you are having fun, they will want to join you.

Next time your club sponsors lessons, approach them with a positive attitude. It sometimes takes many times of asking someone to come to lessons before they come. Don’t give up – be positive. Show prospective students how much fun you are having. Do demo dances, dance at the fair, or dance on a float during a parade. Be visible. Another way to bring interest to your club is to give back to the community you live and dance in. Volunteer as a group. If you can wear your outfits, it will be a great way to talk about square dancing. If you can’t wear your outfit, wear your badge and most importantly, wear a smile.

If your council is considering sponsoring a festival or dance event, set up some special event or competition during the day. A few events that have been tried in the past are suitcase races, outhouse races, and dunk tanks. You’ll be surprised; the special events are what people fondly remember. Don’t be afraid to try something new.

In summary, we’d like you to remember to have fun, be positive and get involved.

Kathy Roberts, OFSRDC President, Publicity & Education Coordinator

Caller's Corner

I would like to talk about the use of a "singles board". WARNING, this may be controversial in some clubs, but it is worth talking about. If you are not sure what this is here is my take. Caution, this is only an option for you -- an idea to tweak as you deem fit.

Single dancers are absolutely essential to square dancing. So are couples. They dance often and support councils, clubs, callers, and cuers. Thank YOU very much. There has been and will be continued discussion on what "Singles" mean for our activity. This topic has been discussed at Leadership Seminar more than once. I am a "single" dancer and besides myself, witnessed many, many other Singles at EVERY event I have ever called or danced at. My concern is, how are we taking care of Singles? Give yourself and your club a grade and then read on. When we take their monies for lessons or dances and larger events we need to try and get all of the Singles the best chance to dance. I believe the "Single Board" does this.

This is not my idea; it was used in our area many years back, up to about 3-4 years ago. Then it stopped.

Here is how it works. My opinion:

Here is what seems to happens at every dance where a Singles Board is used. Let's say, I want to sit out and Leslie wants to dance, she can add her name on either side for (1) tip and (then remove it after that tip if she wants) dance with the next name up from the board.

Sounds complicated, it is not. How do you move the numbers up and down? With a pen or get the plastic magnetic numbers that every thrift store and family uses on their refrigerator. Put numbers next to the names, as the current tip ends you are ready for the next tip.

There are 6-8 tips per night. You could start the board at tip 2 or not. You can advertise your club uses a "Singles Board". I would do this for sure. All of these have an UP-side. Now grade your club as to how do we treat singles?

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
Our next scheduled Fifth Saturday Dance is March 31. That is ear-marked as our Emerald Area's Annual Benefit Dance. The area is responsible for advertising, acquiring callers and cuers, taking care of the door, etc. This year's beneficiary is Honor Flight. Several of our dancers have either gone as Veterans or have accompanied Veterans on this special trip to Washington D.C. It's a wonderful way to thank those who have served our country.

Our next scheduled dances are June 30, September 29 and December 29. We'll have to decide whether or not we'll actually have a dance December 29 since New Year's Eve is just a couple of days later.

Our current board is President - Linda Putzler, Vice-President - Sandy Eddings, Secretary - Christina Corelli, Treasurer - Gail Jackson. An all woman board.

We do have fairly new callers and cuers who have joined CCCA and call and/or cue at our fifth Saturday dances. We have a CCCA meeting prior to the dance.

Keep on dancing, calling and cueing for FUN!

Single Trees - Link
Single Trees only had one dance in January as we always go dark for Mid-Winter on the 4th Friday. Jim Hattrick and Jackie Gale called and cued for a floor full of happy dancers. We were pleased to see some newly graduated dancers come out to join us and hope they will continue to do so. One of the latest graduates has joined our club, and we are pleased to have him. He went to Mid-Winter and had a great time.

There were a number of Single Trees who attended Mid-Winter for the full weekend or else only went up on Saturday. A couple of us were in the advanced hall most of the time, but others spread themselves around between the new dancer hall, mainstream and plus halls. We all had a great time but did wonder why there was no plus or advanced offered Sunday morning for those of us who came for the entire weekend.

The featured callers Dan Preedy and Buddy Weaver did a terrific job of calling to the floor, and we even got to preview next year’s featured caller Ray Brendzy who was there with his family from Canada. He is a very personable caller with a clear voice, and we should have a great time dancing to him next year.

We are hoping that our donated chocolate basket made lots of money for Mid-Winter 2018—there were lots of baskets to be raffled off, each and every one of them looking great.

We are looking forward in March to our annual St. Patrick’s Dance with many showing up in green or wearing shamrocks in some fashion or other. We have a baked potato feed that really goes over well with the dancers—baked potatoes with all the trimmings—yumm! Jim Hattrick will be calling this dance with Jackie Gale cueing. Come dance with us!

We continue to dance Sunday nights from 5:30 - 8:00 at all levels with our competent caller and teacher, Tim Matteson. We encourage dancers to come dance with us and get more floor time. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 to make sure we are dancing as we go dark once in a blue moon. We don't want to miss you. Our dances/classes are always casual. We always have a lot of food too. Come for a fun evening almost every Sunday!

April 10 is the annual Dan Nordbye dance. Dan is a national caller out of Mesa, Arizona. Pre-Rounds with Christina Corelli is scheduled for 7:30. Dan will call mainstream with every third tip plus from 8:00 - 10:30. There is a $7 charge at the door. Dancers may bring cookies if they desire. Dan's program is unique and a heck of a lot of fun! Please join us April 10, a Tuesday for a FUN evening!

We have a special dance May 12 with details coming later. This dance is a Saturday. We will be dark the following day, Sunday, May 13. We'll be in Hall A for this dance with a special caller.

We are dark April 1.

Happy dancing!

We had a great Chinese New Year dance the first Saturday of the month in February, celebrating the Year of the Dog with our Boots and Sandals friends. Lennie Ludiker called and Christina cued.

Then on the fourth Saturday we celebrated the Boots and Sandals 65th birthday, also with Lennie and Christina.

The Wolf Pack will be celebrating a birthday on the first Saturday of March with Sandy Harris calling and Christina cueing. We're at 20 years and counting.

If you haven’t been to one of our dances, you are missing a great time. Don’t forget, unless otherwise noted, we dance Plus from 7:30 to 8:00 and then Mainstream the rest of the evening.

Another Mid-Winter Festival has come and gone! Our club members staffed the Greeter's Booth both days but also had time for dancing. Featured Callers Dan Preedy and Buddy Weaver did a wonderful job and a good time was the result for everyone that I spoke to. If you missed it, put it on your list for next year with Ray Brendzy as Featured Caller. We had a great club photo taken at Mid-winter, too.

Thanks to all who attended our Birthday Dance in February! It’s always a festive occasion. This March will be a fun month as we welcome Spring and doing some more dancing. We’re looking forward to our coast trip March 9 & 10 at Gleneden Beach Community Club and dancing both Friday and Saturday nights. We want to mention again that all are welcome! This has been a longstanding tradition for the Corvallis Squares. For the Saturday lunch potluck there will be good humor and good food, and if you want you can bring a joke to share! Happy Spring to all! Karen

At press time the IWW Mainstream students (an outstanding class!) are putting finishing touches on their dancing skills, looking forward to their first Mid-Winter Festival, and to graduation on February 18. Congratulations to our students, who are doing a great job. And heartfelt thanks to our committed group of angels who shared their experience and especially their enthusiasm with our new crop of square dancers.

We had a fun Pajama Dance in January, with good attendance and enthusiastic participation in the pajama theme. Upcoming special dances are our Birthday Dance on March 10 (celebrating 58 years!) and a Kentucky Derby Dance in May. Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. Dee and Bert Mackaman

Our club had a great celebration of its 69 years of dancing on Sunday, January 21 with over seven squares in attendance. Charlotte Jeskey and Jim Voll were the callers and Jackie Gale cued. Strawberry shortcake was served at our break time. Following the dance, we had graduation and a pizza party for our new dancers. The Lebanon Square Circlers welcomed nine new dancers. It was a super fun day.

The next weekend was Mid Winter Festival time and many of our club members enjoyed the weekend. We had a "Pajama Dance" on February 3 and will have another regular dance on February 17 with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. We will be attending Sweet Home Squarenaders Birthday Dance on February 10.

March will be a busy month as we are planning for a Hippie Dance on the 3rd, with our regular caller and cuer. On March 17, "Girls Night Out" will be calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Sounds like lots of fun! Our club has scheduled its "Mystery Trip" for March 31. There is an open invitation, so anyone interested should call Frank Cawrse. The more the merrier.

Of course, Lebanon Square Circlers is starting preparations for the Strawberry Festival weekend in early June. We hope that many dancers will come to Lebanon for this celebration. See you in a square! Marilyn York

ReVuN'Q
ReVuNQ starts Jive lessons on March 15 for dancers who know some cues or none at all. We will be starting from the beginning for all the dancers. We are looking forward to a good class and welcome any new comers.

During February, we did mostly dancing to cement the Waltz moves we have learned over the last several months. Our class decreased in size due to work schedules and other things that were more important. Our club is small but still going.

We have been talking about what we are going to do for the early summer class and I think we are going to Slow Two Step. Put that on your calendar for summer time. Date to be announced.

NOTICE-----We will be changing our dance time to show lessons at 6:30 to 7:20. We will dance Phase 3-4 from 7:30 to 8:20 and Phase 4+ from 8:30 to 9:30. This starts on March 15 when we start our Jive class. Please mark your calendars for the change.

Lots of our members attended Mid-Winter Festival and enjoyed the dancing in the round dance hall. I was busy otherwise, so I am hoping to see the dances during our Thursday night meetings. Come see us. We enjoy company. Marilyn Schmit

Silver City Squares
Thank you to everyone who attended our birthday dance in February. We had a great time dancing to Leonard and Frances.

Our fundraiser dance is Sunday, March 4. Check out our flyer for all of the details. We will draw our raffle winners during the dance and there will be three lucky winners of $100 each. We will also have a silent auction/basket raffle going on as well.

We have been having practices through February with some of us being new and having to learn all of the styling needed and some of us having to work extra hard on the mysteries at a plus level. Right now, we will have two squares. The Silver Dragons will be either Intermediate or Senior Level (mom is still checking on that) and the Silver Knights will be Novice Level (they only have to dance singing calls/display).

Don't forget to sign up to volunteer. You have to contact Karyn Buchheit to do that! (503-873-5241 or buchheitfarmkm@gmail.com ) Also, don't forget to get your festival pin ahead of time as these allow you into the festival and the open dances Friday and Saturday evenings. We sell them for $2 each, but if you wait to buy at the door, the price is $4 each. See you at a dance. Petrina Buchheit

Willamette Squares
After going dark for December due to Christmas, and in January due to Winter Festival, Willamette Squares will be resuming its regular dances on the fourth Saturday evening of each month. We had a great turnout for our New Dancer Dance and are looking forward to seeing new and old dancers at our upcoming dances. Many dancers took advantage of our experienced clothing sale.

On February 4 new round dance lessons consisting of the waltz and hosted by Willamette Squares at the Salem Square Dance Center began. There will be no further square dance lessons until next fall.

Our president, John Templin, has gone to Arizona for the remainder of the winter months. As the saying goes, "When the cat's away, the mice will play." Chase those winter doldrums away and come dance and play with us during his absence. When he returns, you can be among the many who can inform him of all the good times he missed! He, in turn, will be missed, but knowing John, he will undoubtedly find square dancing opportunities in Arizona and be more than willing to share them with us. Jodee Howard

Buzzin Bees
Greetings from the Buzzin' Bees. We have been enjoying a warmer-than-normal winter and the crocuses are blooming in my yard. Spring is right around the corner. We just had our annual pie eating contest and our winner this year is Damien Carter, one of our teams. He attacked that pie systematically and came up the winner. See picture section of this magazine.

We have been enjoying our new cuer schedule. Dorothy Lowder cues the first Saturday Dance and Lonnie Sykes cues for the 3rd Saturday dance.

March is a busy month for us. We will have a regular dance on 3/3 and our theme dance will be on 3/17 - St Patrick's Day. We will be wearing the green and will have Irish Sundays (loaded baked potatoes) for the break. We will also be making some visitations in March.

Looking to the Future, we have our anniversary dance coming up on April 21st. It is our 60th anniversary so we are calling it our Diamond Jubilee. Hope to see you there.

Respectfully, Debbie Broers

Happy Hoppers - Link
Food has been on the minds of our Happy Hopper members during the month of February. Perhaps you may be thinking this is a strange comment. However, our traditional food drive month for the North Clark County Food Bank is February. As of this date, the total pounds of food have not been tallied, but we are hoping to exceed the amount collected last year. Following the holiday season, we have also enjoyed resuming our dine-out nights. We seem to be international in our restaurant selections. Previously we sampled Italian and German cuisine. February will be no exception as we will be going to a Mexican restaurant at the end of the month. Dining out together is a great way to have a chance to enjoy a good meal while visiting with friends.

On March 12th at our Monday night lessons we will be having a gently used clothing resale starting at 6:00 P.M. We are fortunate to have a sizeable inventory of women's and men's square dance clothing which we sell at amazingly low prices. If you have new dancers looking for square dance attire, or if you are wishing to enlarge your own wardrobe, this sale is for you.

If you have a bit of the Irish in you, you won't want to miss Jim Hattrick's Irish calling. Our second March dance is St Patrick's Day; so of course, we'll be celebrating with Irish sundaes and all manner of Irish fun. We hope to see you there.

Oaky Doaks - Link
March is often associated with lions and lambs but the Oaky Doaks are focusing their attention to more domesticated animals. Come join us on Saturday, March 3rd, for our "Reigning Cats and Dogs Dance". We are collecting donations of cat food for Ani-Meals, an organization that helps seniors and veterans feed their pets, and dog food for Dogs New Life, a no kill dog shelter. "Vote" who reigns with your donation - Cats or Dogs! Cuer Molly Combs will start the dance off with Pre-Rounds at 7:00 pm. Caller Mark Wheeler will be doing Mainstream from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Break will be at 9:30 pm where the answer to the question of who reigns at this year's dance being announced. CAT RULE! DOGS DROOL!

On Saturday, March 17th, we hope that you will follow that slippery little leprechaun to the end of the rainbow and find us there. Come dance and enjoy the blarney while Caller Janienne Alexander and Cuer Molly Combs prove the Irish Proverb, "A tune is more lasting than the song of the birds, and a word is more lasting than the wealth of the world". Pre-Rounds start at 7:00 pm, Mainstream with Rounds starts at 7:30 pm and Break will be at 9:30 pm.

Be very, very quiet. The Oaky Doaks are on the hunt. We're looking for our club banners. Have you seen one lately? Let us know where you saw and we will go track it down.

Hope to see you across the square.

River City Dancers - Link
It has begun as a fun and busy New Year for a River City Dancers. We began by welcoming our new club caller couple Darrell Kalmbach and his wife Erin. Our new dancer class graduated just before mid winter and our club visitation for January was to mid winter festival. Although many of our club members who regularly attend the annual mid winter festival were home sick with the flu and other maladies, our club was well represented with several members in attendance. A good time was had by all. January also brought us a fun visitation from Sunset Promenaders. A return visit to their club is in our future plans.

Our club plans one visitation a month to visit other clubs and we now have a nice collection of banners from several clubs. If you are missing a banner come see us to see if we have it. We dance every second and third Saturday at Milwaukie Community Center at 42nd and Jackson in Milwaukie. Darrel calls a great dance, so come join in the fun. We love having company.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

The Fifth Friday Rogue Sis-Q Council Dance is set and in the works. It will be March 30 and Jim Steele will be our caller. Mary Nutt is the scheduled cuer. The theme, of course, is "Go Green with Rogue Sis-Q Council." In March, would the theme be anything else? Wear your best green outfit and come play with us.

There is also progress on this June's Summer Festival. More information to come later.

We are still asking people to come out and support the new classes that started in January. These people are the future of our activity and need our support. PLEASE come out, you'll be glad you did.

PLEASE support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley. Everyone needs all the support they can get. Times are "skinny," so, please come out and help by supporting your local clubs.

The next Council meeting bwill be April 3, 2018 at Denny's Restaurant on Biddle Road at 4:30pm.

There are still "Learn to Square Dance" t-shirts available. We have found the t-shirts to be great conversation starters.

Lois & Lorri

Side note: There is now a facebook page for the Council that includes events and information on all the clubs - please go and like the page:

February has been a fun month. We had a great time at our annual Chili Cookoff/Dance. Phil & Mary were lots of fun and the Chili was fantastic. Congrats to Louise for winning the Judge's choice and Rikki for winning the Dancer's choice!! We even had a visit from the famous Charlie Brown Cheerleaders. If you haven't seen it yer, be sure to check out the video on our Facebook page.

Our dance on Sat Feb 17th was a wonderful night of all levels of dancing and so much fun. Thank you to all the visitors (as far away as Bend). We enjoyed Jet & Sylvia Roberts so very much and look forward to when they are in the area again. We stayed and enjoyed a potluck and visiting after the dance and there lots of good food to share. If you didn't come out to enjoy this dance, then you really missed out!!!

Our Sept class will be graduating Feb 27th at 630 - please come and support them as they graduate! We will be starting a new Plus class on Tues at 8pm following the Mainstream workshop that replaces "new" dancer classes. Plus will start on March 6th. Come out and give it a try or come brush up and improve your dancing skills!! Our Thursday new dancer class is small - but they are moving along well and having a great time. We are still having fun with our Advanced group - using tapes to learn/dance. The 8 consistent dancers are really having a good time and I've seen improvement in those that have never danced Advanced. So proud of them!

March we have special guest caller Janienne Alexander & cuer Sarge Glidewell!! Going to be a wonderful nite of fun!! March 17th is a dance you don't want to miss. The wonderful Michael Haworth(CA) will be here calling all levels!! He is fabulous. Mark McDonald will be coming over to cue. Going to be a fun nite!!! Advanced at 530; pre-rounds at 630 and then PLUS w/every 3rd tip Mainstream for the rest of the evening; with rounds in between.

Charlie's are in full swing planning for our Boatnik Festival - this is always a great time - get your ribbons now before the price goes up. This year is Tony Oxendine and Sharon Parker!!!!!!

On a side note - we will have a guest caller July 7th Bronc Wise - we are so excited to have him come to the Charlie's!!! Watch for the flyer!!!

Happy Dancing!

Rikki

Thank you Dean and Mary for a good Valentine Dance.

Happy to see our new dancers going up over the hill and dancing with other clubs, January, most of them got a purple heart. Also, they stole a banner from one of the clubs in Medford. They went to new dancer dance in February and had a ball up there. Other dancers went up to the Stars Birthday Dance with Lawrence Johnstone to celebrate their 61st birthday. Way to go Stars.

Our next dance is the St. Patrick's Dance on Saturday, March 17, 2018.

Rogue Squares
The Rogue Squares still have 3 students every week. Phil is very pleased with their progress. We were dark over the holidays, but these kids are right back in the groove and doing great.

The Rogue Squares "Love to our Sweetheart" dance was a lot of fun. For those of you who didn't make it, you missed a very good caller. his name is Ed Kremers and he is from Magalia, CA. He put us through our paces without us knowing about it until the tip was over. Everyone had a great time. Thanks to the Stars, Charlie's Circle 'N Squares and the independent dancers who attended. We really do appreciate you.

In March, to celebrate the "Month of Green," we will have Lawrence Johnstone call our dance. He is a favorite of the dancers in Southern Oregon. We will be dark in April for Pear Blosom.

We are still working on the future for The Rogue Squares.

See you in a square!!!

So let's swing into spring and see each the across a square somewhere. March leads us to April which brightly states The Pear Blossom Weekend Dance......3 days of fun and dancing and camping and eating and oh yeah dancing. There is a flyer with all the who's and where's and what's in the OFN.....Find it and find us. See you there. March also brings another nite of Mexican Train on the 16th... There will be food at 5:30 and Dominoes to follow. If you are bringing dominoes, please reduce them to Double 9 sets. This way everyone shoud be able to stay until the end and have a chance to win a prize See you there.

May brings us Boatnik and more dancing. Charlies have done a good job of re-instating this dance weekend!!!! Come out and see the hall filled with friends and corners to help you while away the weekend. PS There is dancing and all that stuff tooooo

Memorial Day brings you all out to my house for good friends and good food and horseshoes and fun and conversation and and and …. If you need directions call me or see me and I can help you get here from anywhere. Don't know if we will dance. There is room but don't know yet....

June delivers The Summer Festival to Josephine County. Kinda like bringing the rest of the State to where we all are. Lots of fun and prizes and dancing! They have invited me to open with the National Anthem and I have agreed. That should be great fun. Come on out and dance and show the rest of the State that we Southern Oregonians know how to put on a party.

July.........Diamond Lake ….. Wayne Weaver's Last Diamond Lake as a caller. Come on out and tribute him and get wet and eat good food and meet old friends and, oh yeah dance dance dance. It is my summer vacation so I will see you across a square. See the flyer and get registered and come have great fun... Maybe you will win the lovely quilt that Maxine Center donated. It rests nicely on a quilt rack that Don Korner built and donated. You do not need to be there to win(You do need to buy tickets to win) but it is so much more fun if you are.

August will have an End My Calling Career Dance on the 11th. Tell everyone that Wayne is retiring and get them to come to the dance. You come to the dance too.. He will be sorely missed and we need to send him off with a Big Bang. If you have pictures from a 100 years ago when he started calling...we would sure like to borrow them for the dance. He called for several clubs and there has to be someone who is keeping track of all that old stuff... Dig around and help us out. Contact me or Phil Ramey.

Ladies to the center for a teacup chain...

Columbia River Dancers - Link
Well, time does pass. On March 3rd the Columbia river Dancers will have out third (and some said we would never be here) anniversary dance. We will be dancing to Adam Christman that evening. We look forward to having many of our friends join us. We take pride in our reputation as a club that insures that all who attend get to dance. So, if you are a single, do not let that stop you from coming to help us celebrate our 3rd birthday.

If you have not received an email from our Director Melissa James and want to stay up to date on all of our club activities, mention it the next time you come and we will make sure to get you on our email list either as a friend or as a new member.

Our second dance in March will feature one of the callers from Mid-winter. Our own Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing on March 24th. In addition, many of our new members will be advancing on to Plus. Remember that we start new beginner lessons the first Tuesday of each month. Many of our classes are small and we have great angels so our new dancers progress quickly.

We look forward to another great year of dancing. Please come join us.

Eager Beavers - Link
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, by wearing that loud green sweater that doesn’t match anything else in your wardrobe. If you practice daily you will be used to it by the end of the week.

MidWinter in Albany is popular with many of our dancers. Our club voted to simply donate money instead of creating a fund raising basket for MidWinter Festival. A collection jar was put out at the dances and a check for $75 was delivered to Chuck Eddings, MidWinter Chairman, by our club president.

We are proud of club member, Lane Clem, who has been hard at work practicing his caller skills. He had been invited to call for a group in Salem on February 3rd. Over a square of us helped out doing a Demo dance and then being angels for a teaching session. There were two hundred people in attendance, many of them got into squares and said they could have danced for another hour.

After a very successful Plus Class last year we are repeating our program which began February 5th. Lessons are taught every Monday and run from noon to 1:15 with a Plus dance following until 3:00 pm. This an opportunity for you who want to brush up on your Plus skills. We still have the same three great callers giving the lessons: Daryl Clendenin, Jim Hattrick, and Darrell Kalmbach.

Warning: On March 12th we “spring forward” to daylight saving time so remember to change ALL your clocks so you won’t be late to the dance. Who wants to start a petition to quit the change and stay on standard time all year long?

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:15 to 3:00 pm, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

Hoedowners - Link
Hoedowners began January with two sewing workshops for our new club outfits on the 6th and 13th. Darlene Ditsworth was in charge and with the sewing help of Colleen Van Winkle and Cindy Kurle; she was able to provide patterns, plans, fabric, trims, measurements, advice and bling. It’s amazing how many shirts and skirts were created and customized in two Saturday afternoons.

Our annual Black and White Sparkle Dance twinkled into the ballroom on January 13th. It is always wonderful to see the transformation; mirrors sparkling on the walls, snowflakes and fairy lights. Kylie’s birthday was celebrated with a beautiful cake and everyone joined in to sing Happy Birthday.

At our new dancer lessons, we held a used clothing sale on the 17th and on the 24th we held our annual Poker Run where dancers accumulate a poker hand throughout the evening. Prizes were awarded for high and low hands.

And suddenly it was Mid-Winter Festival. As usual, the Hoedowners were out in force. By my count 49 Hoedowners and students attended for all or part of the weekend. It was the Hoedowner’s first opportunity to wear our new Club Outfit and we were pleased with how great it looked on the dance floor. Club activities kicked off Friday evening with a group dinner and a lively post party. Saturday saw dancing, visits to the Carousel Museum, dancing, shopping, and dancing. We congregated once again for dinner Saturday evening before watching the Showcase of Rounds. We enjoyed seeing our own, Sara and David Boultinghouse, Bart and Debra Welch and Mike and Sally Duyck perform. Unfortunately Randy Lewis had to watch from a wheelchair as he had broken his hip but he assures us he is on the mend. Saturday evening’s post party was our last club activity and we filled our suite with a vivacious crowd.

January 31st was our Hoedowner Potluck and Graduation. I’ve often commented on the joys of eating other people’s cooking and my thoughts remain the same; potlucks are wonderful. We had a splendid table with everyone’s best dishes. There was a brief program of introductions, information and of course the awarding of diploma’s and dangles followed by dancing until 9 pm.

What lies ahead? On March 10th, it’s our Potato Head Dance. Can you guess what we’re serving for food? You’re right; it’s a baked potato bar.

On March 24th our Pizza Party Dance will be very special and turn up the excitement for everyone as we’re having LIVE MUSIC provided by "A-Live Sound" featuring Dave and Bonnie Harry of Lynnwood, WA. This is absolutely not to be missed! Have you square danced to live music?? No, well this is your chance.

First let me apologize to the River City Dancers for the mistake I made writing last month's article. We had a wonderful visit not to the River City Dancers but to the Valley River Dancers, a group that offered outstanding hospitality, along with excellent calling (since we share Randy Dibble as our caller) and cuing by Julie Stiers. It was, in fact, the Valley River Dancers that we visited! As I said, we had a wonderful time there.

The April issue will have a report on how our DBD plus lessons work out, starting at 6:00 on our dance nights.

With February almost here as this is being written, we haven't needed the warning about checking our website for bad weather notice. Of course, I've seen snow as late as April 21st in this area, so complacency isn't advised. All those daffodils shooting up beside the road could be wrong.

The Promenaders are working hard with an ambitious lesson schedule each Sunday of Basic Two-Step lessons from 2 to 4 with Ken Pratt instructing, Mainstream Square Dance from 4 to 6 with Mike Stout instructing, and Intermediate Round Dance from 6:30 to 8 with Ken instructing. All the lessons are coming along well and we are happy especially about the people and number of people in the square dance lessons.

Our March dance calendar is:

• March 1st our Thursday evening Plus Dance 7:00 to 9:30 with Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt calling and cueing.

• March 3rd our Saturday evening Mainstream Dance 7:00 to 9:30 with Mike Stout and Ken Pratt calling and cueing. February 15th, Thursday Plus Dance, with Darrell and Ken.

• March 15th, Thursday Plus dance with Darrell and Ken.

• March 17th, Saturday Mainstream Dance, with Mike and Ken. The dance theme is Irish Fling so come dressed as a leprechaun or anyway you wish, just come and enjoy our dance, our people, our caller, our cuer, etc. By the way the leprechaun usually leaves some gold laying around, maybe you will be the lucky person to find it.

• Our schedule each dance is Round dance at 7:00, Square Dance starts at 7:30 until 9:30. Additional parking is available at the bank across the street. The Location is IOOF Hall (upstairs) at 267 E. Main St. in Hillsboro. 503-805-5867 for information..

Toes had a great Mid-Winter Festival and want to thank everyone that had a part in putting on an outstanding weekend. Our new dancers were ready to go down to Albany to dance the weekend away. This group of new dancers worked so hard. We are so excited for the ones that chose to join the club. Our family is growing also with a couple joining the club from Bev and Harlan’s Round Dance class. 2018 is starting off with a bang for our family of Toes.

We hope our Ground Hog Dance has ushered in Spring early. So, looking forward to warmer days: Our Sweetheart Ball on February 16th is one of our favorite dances. We love getting all decked out in our favorite square dance outfits and dance away the evening with our favorite friends.

March 2nd is our regular dance at the Kinton Grange. Be sure to pick out your favorite green outfit to wear to our Shamrock Sashay Dance on March 16th. We’ll be sharing lots of Irish luck, love and friendships to everyone.

Remember on April 6th our first dance is over at the Odd Fellows Hall in Hillsboro. Then we will be back to the Kinton Grange for our regular schedules.

See you in a square.

In February we had our Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball, this year soliciting donations for prizes from local businesses – and wow, the total value of the many raffle items and door prizes came to more than $1,000! Wine tastings, certificates from restaurants, care repair, spa visits, baking supplies, bowling & pizza, cat pet supplies… something for everyone. A big thanks to treasurer Bob Davis who headed up getting the donations. Also thanks to all of you who attended!

In March our Mainstream lessons will end with a graduation celebration. Our dance on March 10th will be very green for St. Patrick’s Day, and on the 23rd we’ll get happy for our “Spring Fling”. Please join us if you can.

Tualatin Timber Squares is having a fabulous time at lessons! The first Wednesday of each month is a No Experience Necessary Square Dance with a LIVE band! To start the music the floor yells “Fire in the Hole!” What a difference a LIVE band makes in the energy level on the floor! I don’t know who had more fun, dancers listening to the band or the band watching the dancers glide across the floor. I highly recommend it. The weeks in between our LIVE band sessions, we will have progressive lessons dancing to pre-recorded music.

Clubs – Consider having a field trip with your students to one of our band nights. Let us know ahead of time and we’ll put an extra crockpot on for you!

Release your repressed pirate by attending our "Pirates of the Caribbean Dance," called by Scott Zinser and cued by Connie Clark at Aloha Grange, March 3rd, starting at 7 p.m. Then don your green for our "Luck O' the Irish Dance" with the same caller and cuer, same place and same time March 17th.

Please Save the Date for our 69th Anniversary Dance April 7th at Aloha Grange. We're looking forward to a good crowd to help us celebrate. Scott always calls a lively, fun dance and Connie has been cueing for years, albeit not 69!

January started with our "Over the Rainbow" Dance. Thanks to those who braved the wind and sleet and made merry for an evening. Janienne Alexander was our caller for the "It's Cold Outside" Dance. We are grateful for the visitors from Valley River and Toe Draggers.

Lessons began January 15th. We had 4+ squares of students and angels for the first two free lessons. We are hoping they all continue. Craig Abercrombie is a great teacher - already has everyone dancing in squares and moving at a lively pace but not so fast that people can't remember the moves they have rehearsed.

Those of us who attended Midwinter met at the Jefferson Station Cafe for dinner Saturday night. Midwinter is always a fun experience, seeing familiar faces from other clubs and meeting new friends.

The Wave Steppers’ first dance of 2018 will be Saturday, March 10th, on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall, with club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance coach Gwen Kiel.

Joe and Gwen will also be doing the club’s dances in May (May 12th), August (August 11th), and October (October 13th). In July (July 14th), the club will have cuer Connie Clark along with Joe as caller.

The club’s April 14th dance will feature caller Janienne Alexander and cuer Connie Clark; June’s dance (June 9th) will bring back caller Mike Stout and cuer Julie Stout; and the Anniversary Dance in September (September 8th) will again be an Elvis Dance, with caller Mark Wheeler as Elvis and cuer Connie Clark.

Garibaldi is nine miles north of Tillamook on US 101. City Hall has a huge second-floor dance hall built for the old Firemen’s Balls. The club has had square dances there since the building was built in 1948.

The Wednesday night square dance classes resumed on January 4th at the downtown Tillamook Elks Lodge. These lessons are FREE and are taught by Joe Wrabek from 6 to 8pm.

We hope you all had as much fun as we did at the Mid-Winter Festival! It is so much fun to see so many dancers all together enjoying this pastime that we all love! It is also fun to catch up with friends that we have not seen in awhile.

Here at the barn, things are sure busy. We have been doing some cleaning and rearranging and things are looking great! If you have not been here recently, come have a look!

We have just begun a winter session of mainstream and round dance lessons. The mainstream lessons will be Friday evenings and both new dancers and experienced dancers are welcome. We really appreciate the experienced dancers who come out as “angels” and help introduce square dancing to new members of our community. Round dance classes are on Tuesday evenings and will begin with teaching Two-Step. Latin rhythms such as Cha Cha, Rumba, and Mambo will also be taught.

We will be having our Sweetheart Dance on the 17th of February, so get your valentine and extend the celebration. Chuck Simpkins will be calling the squares and Neil Koozer will be doing the rounds.

On the 24th of February the Buckeroos will be carpooling down to Medford to help the Star Promenaders celebrate their birthday! It is sure to be a great party and we are looking forward to joining them.

Remember… we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Happy dancing,
