September 2018

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 September 2018
President's Corner

Tim and I went to Diamond Festival this year for this first time. What a beautiful venue! Except for some smoke from the fires in the area, it was absolutely perfect. It was great dancing outside with friends to wonderful callers and cuers. I particularly got a kick out of dancing in the lake and I am really looking forward to attending the festival again next year.

Last month, I listed the festivals that have been advertising in the OFN through the end of the year. This time, I will be talking about our annual Mid-Winter Festival at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in Albany January 25-27, 2019. For those people who arrive early, there will be a Trail’s End Dance on Thursday, January 24 in the Expo Center in Hall A. The featured callers will be Ray Brendzy from Burnaby, Canada and Charlie Robertson from Sulphur, OK. Both of the callers started calling as youth callers. Ray called his first dance at age 12 while Charlie started at age 13. The Mid-Winter’s cuers are Mary and Bob Townsend-Manning. Both Mary and Bob are retired from the US Navy. They have been dancing together since 1992. In addition to these outstanding callers and cuers, we will also have the opportunity to dance with some of our very own Oregon callers and cuers.

Mid-winter Festival will have something for everyone. They have 6 dance floors for your dancing pleasure! There is a separate hall for Mainstream w/ Rounds, Plus w/ Rounds, Advance, B-51, Clogging, and Rounds. Throughout the weekend, there are dances, workshops, resale clothing, sewing clinics, educational seminars, a basket raffle, many youth activities throughout the weekend, and more! You can download the Festival registration form and read more about the Mid-Winter by visiting their webpage at midwinterfestival.com.

On September 23, we will be installing our new Federation President Lorri McIntosh during our meeting at the Salem Square Dance Center. I would like to invite all of you to our State Meeting so that you can meet Lorri and see how our meetings are run. After the meeting, we will have short break followed by our next Summer Festival 2019 meeting. Come and see what we are planning for your enjoyment.

Hope to see you on a dance floor soon.
Kathy Roberts
OFSRDC President

Editor's Note

As we come in to the beginning of another square dance year, things will start to get busy. I see lots of clubs are starting new lessons this month, and clubs that were dark in the summer have started up again. Lots of opportunities are available to help promote and enjoy our activity.

Single Trees only had one dance this month on July 13 with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Our theme was Summer Fun. Our Treasurer Joy Pitts decided since it was so very, very hot that night that we should enjoy some cold ice cream with all sorts of toppings. So though it wasn’t an ice cream social it turned out to be much to the delight of everyone who attended. We had a good turnout despite the heat because we do have an air-conditioned hall with a floating wood floor great for dancing the night away. We sure appreciate having this dynamic duo call and cue for us and travel miles to do so. Thanks to everyone who attended and made this such a fun dance.

We had our annual club picnic the same weekend as our dance on the 15th of July. The weather was so hot that many opted to stay home in the comfort of their homes. Nevertheless we managed to stay cool in the shade provided by the huge trees at Suzanne Peterson’s country home off Seavey Loop. The hamburgers were barbecued by Susan Mathers and we all appreciated her doing the honors for us once again this year. While there were hayrides and several games to play, many sat and talked or watched the avid dog race game enthusiasts! Thanks, Joy Pitts, for brining that ever popular game!

We are looking forward to our new dance year with Jim Hattrick calling our second Friday dances, Jackie Gale cueing both 2nd and 4th Friday dances, and guest callers like Craig Abercrombie and Al Frazier calling our fourth Friday dances. Craig and Al are often calling in September for us but next year in 2019 we will have Dan Nordbye calling the 4th Friday in September. And next summer we will not go dark for the 4th Friday in July as many of our members prefer to dance in town rather than go to Diamond Lake for the long weekend. We also didn’t have to make a decision to go dark for Summer Festival as that will be held on the 3rd weekend in July. Best of all worlds.

Happy dancing, everyone!

We continue to dance Sunday nights from 5:30 - 8:00 at all levels with our competent caller and teacher, Tim Matteson. We encourage dancers to come dance with us and get more floor time. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 to make sure we are dancing as we go dark once in a blue moon. We don't want to miss you. Our dances/classes are always casual. We always have a lot of food too. Come for a fun evening almost every Sunday!

Remember that our hall is air conditioned and has a cushioned wood floor.

Happy Dancing,

Wolf Pack has been dancing all summer; the dances have been small but always fun.

At our recent meeting we came up with some fun themes dances for the next few months. Our first dance on Sept 1st is cancelled due to Labor Day weekend. October 6th we will be having a Spaghetti dinner before the dance and the 27th of October will be our Halloween dance. Look for flyers in your monthly OFN.

1st and 4th Saturdays come out and have a "Howling" good time with the Pack.

The IWW dance hall was dark in August, but it was still a busy month. We did a demo dance at the Steam Up in Brooks on the 4th. Many IWW dancers enjoyed the hospitality of our sister clubs at their dances and appreciated the opportunity to keep dancing during our dark month. Most club members helped with admission and car parking at the Polk County Fair, our annual fund raiser. The Fair’s new computerized ticket sale procedure using hand held I-Pods and ticket printers made for an interesting transition.

We will celebrate the end of another great summer at our annual IWW Picnic at Maud Williamson State Park on August 26.

Fall mainstream lessons will be in Building D at Salem Hospital (Rooms D2-1 and D2-2; use Visitor Parking [free]), Sundays 6-8 pm beginning September 16. Lessons are free. Registration ends September 30. See the OFN for details.

Our kick-off dance of the new dance year is September 1. Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. Don’t miss our upcoming special dances: November 3 Halloween Dance; December 8 Christmas Dance; March 9 IWW Birthday Dance; April 13 Easter dance. Hope to see you across a square! The club continues in August with intro to Phase 3 for the Phase 2 dancers who are interested in moving up in difficulty of dancing. Our sessions have been pretty well attended and the Phase 3-4 always has room for more.

Now that September is almost upon us, we have had a meeting and come up with a new schedule for the fall. September 6 will be a party night to get ready for the new dance season. September 13 will see a change in our sessions as follows:

6:30 to 7:15 Intro to Phase 3 Cha

7:15 to 7:45 Workshop on Phase 2 and 3 to keep current

7:45 to 8:30 Phase 3-4 teach for West Coast Swing

8:30 to 9:30 Phase 4+ to Easy 5 workshops for the difficult steps

We are hoping that by offering the Intro to Cha, the Phase 2 dancers will attend our sessions and be comfortable with the move up to another level. We will have flyers out and will be doing word of mouth to get the word out to the dancers who need more than the easy level of dancing.

Stephanie and Leonard continue to build up their teaching skills in round dancing and are making good progress. Come and support them in their endeavors to make our hobby more fun and entertaining. See you soon in our circle of friends and dancers. Marilyn Schmit

We have been dancing the nights away, even in the heat. Our July dances were well attended. Our third Friday dance had six, count them, SIX squares on the floor. It was an awesome dance with visitors from Vancouver, Portland, Beaverton, Lebanon, Corvallis and Silverton and, of course, Salem. Thanks to all who came.

Hot August nights went well. Willamette Squares visited us on our first Friday dance. We will have three dances in the month, ending with our 5th Friday Plus Dance on August 31.

September 21 will be our Annual Corn & Cluck Dance. You do not want to miss this!! The chicken will once again be making an appearance and who knows what that crazy bird has in store for this year! Cost is $8.00 for the dinner and dance. Check out the flyer for more info.

We had great fun dancing to Leonard Snodgrass in the Silverton Homer Davenport Days Parade. We managed to get enough of our club members to have one square on the trailer plus a couple of "walkers" handing out flyers and two in the truck pulling the trailer.

Lessons are starting this month and we are hoping for a good turnout this year.

We are back to dancing this month! Join us for our Hawaiian pie night. We will have a variety of pies for our snack at break.

Karyn Buchheit should know sometime this month the location for next May's Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. We do have the pins available now. See you at a dance soon. Petrina Buchheit

There’s so many changes to our dances in September, paramountly the new outdoor floor at the Country Cut-Ups and the totally new venue at the Happy Hoppers. They are now at the Washington Grange in Vancouver – one of the nicest (and newest) granges you will find anywhere. Although the grange claims to be on 7701 NE Ward Rd. in Vancouver, you can only find the entrance on NE 77th.

Oh, my goodness, you ladies should at least come to our dances to see our new ladies room President Glenn has built for us. It even has a door now! Bouncer Bruce Bruiser no longer has to stand outside to protect our maiden modesty! It’s a right pretty room. Well, it doesn’t have the hot tub and sauna that the guys claim they have, but it’s a right pretty room – one of the finest amongst the granges.

September is still the season for hot weather. Don’t forget: we cancel our dances if the temp is 90 or higher.

Square lessons start the first Wednesday in September, an hour before our usual dance. So far, we’re the only club between Oregon City and Canby to offer lessons.

Buzzin Bees
Greetings from the Buzzin' Bees. We hope your summer was good and we hope you are as excited to start the dance season as we are. Our first dance is on Saturday, September 15th. It will start with Pre Plus Workshop at 7 p.m. and mainstream at 7:30. Our theme is "Welcome back" as in "Welcome Back Kotter" - 70's themed. We will feature root beer floats at the break. K.C.Curtis is our caller and Lonnie Sykes is our cuer. We dance at the Hazel Dell Grange.

Our lessons start on September 9th at 6 p.m. at the Hazel Dell Grange. We also will be adding in plus lessons that start on October 14th. We'll be welcoming back some of our favorite themes this year such as the pie eating contest, the pajama dance and our backlight dance.

The Bees send our heartfelt thanks to Dorothy Lowder for her service as one of our cuers this past year. It was her second go-round with the Bees. Many of us learned to round dance from Dorothy. She has decided to retire for health reasons. Dorothy - we will miss you and thank you so much for the many years you have given us.

Lonnie Sykes has been our cuer for the third Saturday dance and he will pick up a few more dances and we will have guest cuers as well. We hope to see you in a Square.

Back to school for some, back to lessons for square dancers! Our Mainstream lessons will begin September 13th with Scott Zinser every Thursday night from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. We will also have a Round Dance Two-Step class starting on September 9th with Tami Helms and Tim Keck, meeting at 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Sundays. Sign up soon!

We have certainly had a hot summer and our new outdoor dance floor has been such a blessing. So far, we have not had to cancel any dances due to the heat. It is located in a shady area behind the Barn and the outdoor breezes cool us off. Come join us if it is too hot to dance in your area!

We are gearing up for the annual Ham, Egg, and Pancake Breakfast and Bazaar. There are already raffle tickets available for three items: some hardwood firewood, a beautifully embroidered tablecloth, and a night’s stay at the Clackamas River House Bed and Breakfast. Take a chance and help us raise funds for the maintenance of the barn.

Keep on dancing!

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
Most of the Ramblers enjoyed a 4th of July sojourn in Seattle for the 35th Annual IAGSDC Convention. Over the course of three days, your correspondent logged 100,000 steps on his personal fitness tracker. Now, that’s some floor time! We all had a wonderful time meeting dancers from all over North America, as well as Taiwan, Japan, Denmark, and Germany. Next year in Philadelphia!

Three of the most popular callers from the Seattle convention, Gary Monday, Kris Jensen, and Mike Kellogg, will be bound for Portland for our annual three-day square dance festival October 26-28. We call our festival Scares and Squares, due to its proximity to Halloween, and we will have a costume contest on Saturday night. Attire is casual for the entire weekend—you can wear your square dance finery if you wish, but anything goes with the Ramblers. We also welcome solo dancers for this weekend—there’s no need to bring a dance partner. Our callers are among the best in the entire country, so this is a great

opportunity to have a convention-like dance experience without incurring travel costs! Find out more on our webpage: http://www.rosetownramblers.com/scares-n-squares/.

The Ramblers will be holding fall lessons at our new venue, starting Wednesday, September 26. The new venue is the Bridgeport UCC, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland. Lessons run from 7-8:30. We will have two free introductions to square dancing at the same venue on August 29 and September 12, also from 7-8:30. All are welcome to the free introductions, where we will provide information about our lessons. As always with the Ramblers: no dance partner necessary and casual dress encouraged!

Finally, after our summer hiatus, our Second Saturday dances will resume on September 8 at the Milwaukie Grange. Ian Craig will be calling. We alternate Mainstream and Plus tips from 7:30 to 9:30. All are welcome to join us for a potluck at 6:30.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

President, Lorri McIntosh, announced this council will be raffling a "Game Basket" to benefit the next "Young at Heart" Dance. This dance will be next July. Exact date and place is yet to be determined. If you have any games or puzzles to donate to this basket, please let Lorri or Lois know. All proceeds will go the the "Young at Heart" or Youth Dance.

Callers & Cuers delegate, Elaine Funk, gave us the dates and locations for the Rogue Valley Caller and Cuer Dances for the coming year. They are as follows:

February 10, 2019 - Winterfest in Grants Pass

April 28, 2019 - Sunday Sundae Social in Medford

August 4, 2019 - Hot August Hoedown in Medford

December 15, 2019 - Midway Dance in Grants Pass

Don't forget, we have changed our meeting location. We are now at Round Table Pizza in Poplar Square.

PLEASE support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley. Everyone needs all the support they can get. Times are "skinny," so, please come out and help by supporting your local clubs. We don't want to lose any clubs because of non-support from the dancers.

The next Council meeting will be October 2, 2018 at Round Table Pizza in Poplar Square at 4:30pm.

Lois & Lorri

The Charlie's were dark in August for the Fair; but we were still busy. We had a booth to give information about upcoming classes and hopefully that will help get some new dancers! Thank you to those that volunteered to man the booth!! Several Charlie's attended USA West Convention in Reno; and had a wonderful time!!!

We are getting ready to start new classes on Thursday, September 6th. Please note the change in class day for our new Mainstream class. Tuesdays from 630-8 will be a new Plus class followed by our Advanced by Tape class from 8-930. We would love to see dancers at these two classes. The Tuesday classes will start on September 11.

September 4th we will have a Bust The Rust dance to shake off the cobwebs of our angels and get ready for new classes!! Please join us! Rikki Lobato will cue rounds and Chuck Simpkins will call. Dance starts at 6 with pre-rounds. Mainstream/Plus/Rounds from 630-9.

We all had a wonderful time celebrating Wayne Weaver's (and Debbi's) retirement!! What a special nite for all involved!!

We will be dark for Saturday nite dances during the month of September - due to Labor Day and the Circle N Square Birthday dance.

We look forward to traveling to Yreka to attend this special dance.

Dances will start up again in October. Oct 6th we have Chuck Simpkins & Sarge Glidewell. Oct 20th we are visiting Klamath Falls to dance at the Potato Festival - watch for a sign up sheet for car pool etc. November dances includes J Domis & Bob Dingman on the 3rd & Mike Sikorsky & Cathy Houston on the 17th. Then plan for a fabulous celebration on December 1st for our 51st birthday dance with the wonderful Michael Kellogg and MaryAnn Callahan!!! The year winds down with Phil Ramey & Elaine Funk on the 15th! Lots of fun dances at our hall and many more throughout the valley and beyond that we look forward to attending!!

Rogue Squares
We are having dances only in January & July for now. We will give this a trial and see what happens. Since our caller, Phil Ramey, has completed a "Caller School" and has some pretty good sounding ideas, the Rogue Squares are going to stick around and see how the situation is after January and the annual "Pajamarama."

In the meantime, we are dancing at the other clubs in our Council. We will be going to the Circle N Square's Birthday Dance on September 15, the Potato Festival in Klamath Falls the middle of October and Harvest Hoedown in Yuba City the end of October. The list goes on & on.

Our July 20 dance was "Potluck Birthday Party for the United States." The caller was Phil Ramey and the cuer was Elaine Funk. This dance was for any dancer who likes a good time and for the recent graduates (both September and January classes). Everyone seemed to have a great time and we all ate too much. This is typical of potlucks because, it seems, all square dancers are good cooks.

We are still working on the future for the Rogue Squares. Come on out and help us make a comeback. You won't be sorry.

Well, here it is September and New Dancer Classes begin on Thursday the 9th at 7PM. Bring a friend or a neighbor!!! Come on out and ANGEL!!!!!! There is such a delight in seeing the happy shine of people learning the joy and fun of Square Dancing. There will also be A1/A2 Workshops on Wednesdays in September and Classes/Workshops start in October. Watch for Wayne's E-Mail...

Sorry I missed you all last month.....just didn't seem to get it all together.

Diamond Lake was a wonderful time. We had some smoke problems a few days but as a general rule it was really nice weather. Dancing in the Lake was cool and fun. And dancing to Hunter Keller is always the tops. Diamond Lake can only be successful due to the hard work of the Chairpersons Walt and Darlene Shontz and all those that work so well on the Committee. I was going to list all those that helped this year.....but I fear omitting someone! So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all whose work made Diamond Lake Festival another grand success. Dann and Fay Houghton will be Chairpersons for 2019.

Lois Muck has included a group of fliers in her newsletter and our newsletter for upcoming dances and events.

Back to School....Come on out and Call or Cue.....Bring clean stuffed animals for Medford Police Department....Come play Mexican Train......so many events. Check all the fliers and mark your calendars and I am sure I will see you somewhere.

And maybe a special dance with Eric Henerlau is in the works!!!! Keep an eye and an ear out!!

So bring someone to class......dress up for a dance.....come to our meeting......see you.

Remember that the September meeting is held on the first Thursday, instead of the 2nd Thursday, to avoid chaos on the 1st night of class.

Our next Council event will be a Tri Council dance hosted by the Portland Area Council. The dance will be held at the Oak Grove Community Center, 14496 SE Cedar Avenue 97267 on the fifth Saturday in September, the 29th from 7PM to 11PM. Stephen Cole will be the featured caller with Ken Pratt cueing the rounds.

The TVC encourages all dancers to attend the anniversary dances of member clubs. There are three anniversary dances in September: Wavesteppers start the month out on the 8th with their anniversary dance featuring Elvis (Mark Wheeler) at the Garibaldi City Hall, with Connie Clark cueing; the Toe Draggers will hold their Berry Good 43rd Anniversary Dance at the Kinton Grange on the 21st, KC Curtis calling and Bev Flint cueing; and the Tri Squares have their 20th Anniversary dance at the Tigard Grange on the 28th with national caller Adam Christman and Sandra Pinion cueing. As September comes we hope the really hot weather is finally behind us. We are sorry that the Grange has no air conditioning but with the new windows that open so nicely and the breeze that comes in the evening we are gearing up for a dance in September.

Yup, that is right. Only one dance this month unless you are into clogging. The area clogging club rents the Hazel Dell Grange ever fourth Saturday in September. So, look for the Dancers to come visiting. We will decide soon and let the lucky club get out the banner they got from us and perhaps even get out their banner as we will attempt to take it home.

The dance we will have will be great, however. On the 8th, Dan Nordbye will be calling and Julie Stiers will be cueing. As we do every year, we will gladly take any school supplies that are brought and make sure they get to children who could truly use them.

If you are not on our list of Friends of the Columbia River Dancers, drop me an email at nickandjan@comcast.net with your email and I will make sure you get our emails. It is really nice to be able to see when the weather is such that we are not dancing or having lessons as was the case a few times this summer.

We look forward to having you visit. Remember that it is our honor to make sure that everyone gets to dance. This means that if you are a single, please feel welcome to come.

Is summer over? Seasons come and go so quickly these days. It seems like yesterday I was putting seeds into the ground. We should take the advice of the poet, Robert Herrick (1591-1674) “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a flying: And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying…..”

Note location change: Join us at the Aloha Grange for a special Labor Day Dance, September 3rd. Sunset Presbyterian Church is closed that day. Aloha Grange is located on 185th Avenue and 1/2 block North of TV Highway.

July’s hot weather has not been a problem for the Eager Beavers since the Sunset Presbyterian Church is air conditioned. Do come join us for some cool dancing. To keep our thoughts cool we had a Christmas in July dance. Everyone who wore a little red and green posed for an out-of-season photograph.

Even if you work on Mondays, you can join us once in a while; we dance every Monday, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our three great callers (Jim Hattrick, Daryl Clendenin, and Darrell Kalmbach) keep us on our toes as each week, always seeming to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. We dance from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club

Hoedowners - Link
July was a barn burner this year; ♫“Hot, Hot, Hot”. Even the weatherman kept repeating we were having a ♫“Heat Wave”. On the 14th we held our Hawaiian Luau dance and it might have felt like ♫“The Heat is On” but actually the Aloha Grange’s air conditioning kept the dance floor cool like a♫ “Summer Breeze” The Hoedowners were celebrating ♫“Islands in the Stream” with exotic flowers, leis and Hawaiian music. I think we succeeded. Dancers came in their best tropical apparel, short pants and we dined on Luau food to offset the sizzling heat. At least we weren’t trying to figure out where to go ♫“When the Volcano Blow”

On the 28th we totally shifted gears to go cruising on a hot summer night. Why? We wanted a Root Beer Float Dance and ♫”Those Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer”. We knew it was ♫“Too Hot” for hot hash and although we consider square dancing to be ♫“Hot Stuff”, we worried not everyone would enjoy ♫“Hot Fun in the Summertime” so an ice cream beverage seemed in order. What better way to end the evening than with foamy, creamy root beer floats, a little bit of ♫“Hot N Cold”, a little bit of ♫“Summertime Blues”. What does September hold for the Hoedowners? We’ll be tipping our hats to kids, parents and teachers with our September 8th Back to School Dance and Sock Hop. Please bring school supplies to donate.

On September 12th, we’ll start Mainstream lessons, 7pm at the Aloha Grange. Daryl Clendenin will be teaching. It’s a great time to bring your friends to learn this fabulous activity and for experienced dancers to brush up on those square dance skills. It’s $6 at the door. Experienced Angels welcome.

September 27th is our Farmer’s Market Dance because September is prime season for all those fresh, organic treats from the garden or market; corn, tomatoes, melons, onions, beets, beans, potatoes, etc. We’ll bring the fruits and veggies.

Our summer dances have been lively events many visiting clubs have joined us regularly giving us 40-50 dancers. Ice cream is our summer focus for break we've had floats, sundaes and shortcake. It has been nice to have the hall air conditioned this summer. When Craig was gone in July, Darrell Kalmbach gave us a good spin. Thank you Darrell for always providing a fun dance. September 22nd we will have Al Frazier from Texas joining Craig. Gotta come see them, as they create a dynamic duo!!

REMEMBER September begins our regular dance schedule: 2nd Friday, 4th Saturday. Plus: 7pm - 8pm, Mainstream with rounds: 8 - 10pm. Our website www.r-square-d.info is a great way to keep track of our club and events.

Even though we were dark in July and August, our preplanned four summer visitations to other clubs had great Tri Squares turnouts. We visited Valley Squares, Bachelor ‘N Bachelorettes, Sunset Promenaders, and as I write this, we’ll visit the Hoedowners at the end of August. We were so thankful for all their air conditioning! Ten of us also visited Valley River’s annual “Dancing Under the Stars” with its own air conditioning provided by Mother Nature.

In September please mark your calendar to attend our “20th Anniversary Celebrate Good Times” dance, on Friday the 28th. It should be lots of fun with National Caller Adam Christman joining us!

Mainstream lessons, taught by our caller Randy Dibble, began Tuesday, September 11th, and continue each Tuesday 6:30 – 8 p.m. Lessons are at the Community Center and there is room for more to join us, so spread the word to your friends in the Newberg area interested in checking out square dancing. The first 2 weeks are free.

Our "A" lessons, also taught by Randy Dibble began Tuesday, September 11th following Mainstream lessons, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Community Center. You can still get in the class and catch up, so come on out and dance with us.

Despite the hot temperatures the week of our “Dancing Under the Stars” dance during the Newberg Old Fashioned Days Festival next to the carnival, we enjoyed great weather and danced in our tennies under an especially full, beautiful blood moon. We missed those choosing to attend the Diamond Lake festival the same weekend, and hope their dance was also fun for all.

We are rockin’ to the 50’s at our September Mainstream dance (Friday, September 28th) So, “Put on your bobby socks baby, and Roll up your old blue jeans” and come on out to Newberg for a fun evening of dancing. We square up at 7:30 for Plus with Mainstream and Rounds from 8-10:30 p.m.

We dance on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month. The 2nd Friday is a Plus Dance, with pre-rounds at 7:30, Plus from 8 to 10:30, and the 4th Friday is an MS Dance, with pre-Plus at 7:30, MS from 8 to 10:30. At the Chehalem Community Center, 500 E. Second Street, Newberg.

Valley River Dancers have joined the Tualatin Valley Council (which I learned is apparently the largest Council in the State of Oregon) effective this month and so we are beginning a new season. I am reminded of a little song my Bluebird/Campfire Girls group used to sing when I was a little girl: “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.” I look forward to representing my club beginning this month and sharing what we are doing, learning more about what’s going on at your clubs, and meeting the other delegates and making new friends. We want to be sure and thank our lovely outgoing club Secretary as well as Delegate to the Mid-Willamette Council, Jan Amerson, for her outstanding efforts serving in both these positions.

Such a Summer! Good thing we have air conditioning at the Aloha Grange.

Our July 7th dance we had an official visitation from Tri-Squares, they retrieved their banner. At the July 21st dance, the Columbia River Dancers had an official visitation and they retrieved their banner. We had such a good time with both clubs. As our clubs get smaller, visitations give us such a boost of fun and friendship. Keep dancing, it is so good for you.

Our Summer/Fall classes are continuing. We did have to go dark in July for a class, temperature at my place (two miles from the grange) was 98 degrees, way too hot even with air conditioning.

End of Summer is almost here, let's hope Fall is cooler. Valley Squares September 1st dance “Back to School” we will be collecting school supplies, Scott Zinser is calling. September 15th dance theme is “Jailhouse Rock”, with Craig Abercrombie calling. Come rock with us.

Wave Steppers - Link
The Wave Steppers’ Anniversary Dance will be Saturday, September 8th at Garibaldi City Hall. The club, under various names; the Skippers, Coast Swingers, and most recently the Wave Steppers has been in business since sometime before 1900. We’ve danced on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi’s City Hall since the building was built in 1948. The Anniversary Dance will again be an Elvis Dance, with caller Mark Wheeler as Elvis and round dancing with cuer Connie Clark.

The last dance of the 2018 season, a “Fall Dance” Saturday, October 13th, will again have club caller Joe Wrabek and line dancing with Gwen Kiel. After that, the club will be dark for the winter, except for classes and the annual Christmas party.

The Wave Steppers’ dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth Street (just a block off US 101, 9 miles north of Tillamook). About two-thirds of the second floor of City Hall is a dance floor, built in the 1940s for the old Firemen’s Balls.

The club’s free square dance classes taught by club caller Joe Wrabek continue on Wednesdays, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook.

Wow, what a month! The Buckeroos enjoyed five evenings of dancing at the Douglas County Fair. We had a different caller each evening and enjoyed each and every one of them! We are so thankful that the Umpqua Area Council sponsors this event each year. We are already excited about doing it again next summer!

We are going to be doing a demo dance at the Pioneer Days on August 23rd. This is a fun family event, so if are in the area, plan to spend the day in Canyonville. The event is held at Pioneer Park August 23-25, 2018. We will also have our annual Buckeroo picnic that weekend. It is always fun to gather as a club and celebrate our love of dancing.

Mark your calendar for our 2nd Annual Back To School Barn Sale! The barn will be filled with treasures August 31st and September 1st. This will be the place to be if you have a dorm room to furnish this fall! Check the website for more info.

We are all excited to begin new mainstream lessons on September 9th. If you know anyone in the area who may be interested, please send them our direction!
