Oregon Federation News
December 2018

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 18 December 2018
President's Corner

As the holidays approach we will have many opportunities to have fellowship with family and friends. How about bringing family and friends square dancing with you? They may have an enjoyable time watching and joining in on the fellowship of your square dance family.

Southern Oregon offers multiple dancing opportunities with a council dance November 30th, Charlie Brown Squares Birthday dance December 1st, and Star Promenaders New York New Year’s Eve Dance (celebrating New York time and get home early). The Rogue Sis Q Council is having a beginner Mainstream Pajamarama dance, that’s right come and dance in your best pajamas. What’s happening in your area? I have seen several dancing opportunities at multiple Oregon clubs, councils, and beyond. Search the OFN and the Federation Facebook sites and make plans to dance before, or after, that turkey, dressing, pies, cakes, and all those goodies.

The kids and I will be visiting Abernethy Grange November 24th to support a new cuer, Rikki Lobato, who will be working with an exciting, National caller, Hunter Keller, at Abernathy Grange. Anyone want to join me and work off that Thanksgiving Dinner and DESSERT? You have Friday to do you resting, shopping, and anything else after Thanksgiving Day and then Saturday go dancing.

Anyone having a Holiday dance or event I recommend sending flyers to your local OFN editor and get it posted to the Federation website and Facebook. Tim Roberts has done a great job posting information from councils and club, and while you’re sending that email to Tim, send one to Kathy Roberts to post on the Federation Facebook page.

Don’t forget to invite a new dancer when attending dances. I must say a personal invitation may encourage someone to attend the dance. It did for me this week.

Lorri McIntosh
OFSRDC President

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
Our next scheduled Fifth Saturday Dance, December 29, has been cancelled because it's two days away from the New Year's Eve dance.

Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli will be calling and cueing a New Year's Eve dance. 8:30 will be Pre-Rounds with Christina. Then we'll dance mainstream with plus tips and rounds until 2019! Roger will call one tip into the new year. Wow! Can you believe it'll be 2019? Hard to believe! Any callers or cuers present New Year Eve will be asked if they'd like to call and/or cue. Sounds like a fun way to bring in 2019! Please join us as we celebrate each time zone's midnight into 2019! It's fun as Roger was raised in Chicago. We'll do New York, Chicago, Ontario, Oregon and then Eugene/Springfield. We party all night. The cost for this evening of FUN is back to the 80's! $2.50 per person! That's right! $2.50! Please bring a pie. We'll celebrate at midnight with more noise makers and sparkling cider.

Keep on dancing, calling and cueing for FUN

In October we had a pair of dances with great callers—Jim Hattrick on the 2nd Friday and George Hermann on the 4th Friday. Jackie Gale cued both of our dances as she normally does. We are so lucky to have such great callers and a great cuer. Both dances were well attended and had as many visitors as Single Trees in attendance. Our Halloween dance had the usual turnout of zany costume wearers. Thanks to all who participated and made the dance so much fun. The 3rd Saturday Single Trees as well as Independence Wagon Wheelers and the Buckeroos helped the Whirl-A-Ways celebrate their 60th birthday! It was sure fun to see a floor full of happy enthusiasts dancing to the calling of Mike Kious and his grandfather George Hermann. Christina Corelli did a great job of cueing that night as always. Thanks for a good time.

We are looking forward to our Christmas Dinner and Dance on December 14 half way through the month and always a fun affair as the hall is beautifully decorated all season long. Everyone gets together on this one and makes the hall look magical and festive..

Hope to see many of you out dancing with us, but if not, Mid-Winter is around the corner.

We continue to dance Sunday nights from 5:30 - 8:00 at all levels with our competent caller and teacher, Tim Matteson. We encourage dancers to come dance with us and get more floor time. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 to make sure we are dancing as we go dark once in a blue moon. We don't want to miss you. Our dances/classes are always casual. We always have a lot of food too. Come for a fun evening almost every Sunday!

Kris Jensen, national caller from Albuquerque, called for us November 17. What a treat!

We are so blessed that we get to dance to her fine calling a number of times during the year. Kris and Kurt's mom lives in Eugene now. Kris called advanced, followed by our famous potluck and then mainstream and plus. 3:00 - 8:00 is a lot of dancing! Thanks Kris and Spin Cycle Squares. And, we had one fabulous silent auction. We couldn't believe the wonderful items! A great way to shop for Christmas too!

Remember that our hall is air conditioned and has a cushioned wood floor. Now, we are using the heat to stay comfortable!

Happy Dancing,

Christina Corelli

We had a Spaghetti dance and a Veterans dance recently both were sparsely attended. We really hope that we can get more dancers to attend our dances or another club might go away.

We along with Single Trees and Whirl-A-Ways are sponsoring lessons that are doing very well. We started out with about 25 and still have about 19 attending. Hopefully some of those will join the local clubs and help all of us grow into more viable clubs.

Let's all try attending and supporting our clubs and help this activity become stronger again.

We had such fun at our Halloween Dance! Most of the dancers came in costumes. Our cuer, Sandra Pinion, came as Maleficent- a great costume! Leonard Snodgrass, our caller, was not costumed so several of the members decided to make a mummy of him. He graciously stood very still while having toilet paper wound all around him! What a fun trick! And we earned our Mummy badge. Carmen

We had a festive and well-attended Halloween Dance on October 27. Our mainstream lessons are continuing under Bruce and Judy's excellent guidance. We look forward to the start of the Area New Dancers' Dances. We were dark in November in order to be able to attend other dances, so we are excited about December when we're holding our Christmas Dance and we're looking forward to dancing in the New Year! Our Fall Mainstream Class is discovering why we love to square dance. The class members are making great progress under the guidance of George Hermann, our fantastic Club Caller and Mainstream Class Instructor, and they are having lots of fun in the process. We greatly appreciate Salem Hospital allowing us to hold our classes at the hospital. Kudos to Dave O’Neil, IWW Membership chair, for a superb job of organizing and coordinating the fall lessons.

The November 3 Halloween Dance was a big success. Everyone enjoyed the Halloween decorations, and many dancers added to the mood with imaginative costumes. Thanksgiving will have come and gone by the time you read this, and we will be entering the Christmas season. We hope that you had a Happy Thanksgiving and that your Christmas season is joyful and peace-filled.

By all means don’t miss the December 8 Christmas Dance and Silent Auction. Enjoy spirited dancing, good fellowship, a festive holiday atmosphere, and a lively silent auction. Bid on the many and varied items offered at the auction. With skilled and well-timed bidding, and some luck, you may take home treasures that will enhance your holiday decorations, enrich your holiday entertaining, and/or complete your holiday gift shopping.

Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall, and especially be sure to come to our upcoming special dances: December 8, Christmas Dance and Silent Auction; March 9, IWW Birthday Dance; April 13, Easter dance. Hope to see you across a square! Happy holidays! Dee and Bert Mackaman

Our club will have a busy month in December. The first is our Toy Dance and New Dancers Dance. Dancers may bring an unwrapped toy and get in to the dance for half price. The Lebanon Fire Department then picks up the toys for local distribution. Our dance on December 15 will be our Christmas dance. Our club also participates in the "Holiday In The Park" community decoration of Ralston Park.

Hope to see you all at our 70th Birthday Dance on Sunday, January 20, 2019. More details to follow. Marilyn York

The lessons continue to go well with good attendance for both classes. Cha is working into Phase 4 moves and West Coast Swing is working toward the end of Phase 4 and into easy Phase 5. The dancers are enjoying the teachings of Ken & Dianne Pratt and Stephanie Lozano with Leonard Snodgrass. Leonard is getting better weekly with his cueing. The switch-off between the two couples from one week to another is a challenge for all concerned, but it is working. Thanks to all four instructors for their work in making our club a place for current Phase 2 dancers to work into the next level of rhythms.

We are not hosting New Year’s Eve this year, but our instructor, Ken Pratt along with David Vomocil, are hosting an outrageously fun evening. (Their description!)

Come and see us from 8 pm to midnight for a nice evening of dancing, camaraderie, and desserts to keep our energy up for the fun evening. We will be dancing at the Salem Square Dance Center, so plan on joining us.

We will hold a club meeting soon to discuss the upcoming season of dancing and see what is next for lessons and see how things are going for the instructors. Marilyn Schmit

We had our ham dinner dance on November 9. Those who joined us enjoyed a great dinner followed by dancing to Leonard and Frances.

We are looking forward to a switch for us in December. We have our regular dance on December 14 and our new dancers dance on December 29. On the 14, we will also be having a basket raffle. This was started by a challenge from one club member to the other members. Our new dancer dance is also our baked potato dinner so when you bring your students, bring them early and enjoy dinner as well. Our experienced clothing will also be 1/2 price at our new dancer dance. See our flyers for both of these dances.

Mom (Karyn Buchheit) has a definite place for the teen festival. It will be at Silverton High School, Silverton Oregon again! Dates are May 3 & 4, 2019. Mark your calendars and come watch the fun. There are lots of volunteer jobs so contact mom if you are interested in helping out. See you at a dance soon. Petrina Buchheit

We are moving right along with our class this year and hopefully they will join our club. Like many clubs we are getting smaller and really need an influx of new dancers.

Our new dancers dance will be Sunday, December 2 at the Salem Square Dance Center at 1:30. Look for our flyer.

We always try to have interesting themes for our dances and invite all to come and join us. Casual attire is always an option at our club. Sandy Harris

Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares celebrated their 24 years as a club at their regularly scheduled dance for the month of October. It was Halloween themed with costumes encouraged. Each corner of the Square Dance Center held some kind of Halloween creature, and there was an assortment of orange and black outfits, one gun less cowboy, two skeletons that literally had each other’s back, and our caller, Sandy, as Super girl! There were a variety of comments made referring to Supergirl’s shapely dancer’s legs which were complemented by her colorful stockings. There was no shortage of treats (no tricks) along with the Willamette Squares birthday cake. Thanks to everyone who attended and to all whose efforts contributed to the lively birthday dance.

Willamette Squares was honored to have Bryce and Nancy Baker among us again. They received acknowledgement and a good share of hugs. Healing thoughts are being sent to Diane Wilke, who is recovering from heart surgery.

Willamette Squares will be having a Christmas Dance in December on their regularly scheduled dance night at the Salem Square dance Center. Their new Dancers Dance with be January 16, 2019, and on the fourth Saturday of January they will be dark due to the Mid Winter Festival that weekend. They continue to support the Independence Wagon Wheelers free Sunday night lessons at Salem Hospital. Willamette Squares are off to a good start for their 24th year. Jodee Howard via Steve Hoots

Of course you are all coming to our annual Christmas Dinner December 17? Again it will be at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Clackamas.

After losing four cuers in a quarter calendar year (Dorothy Lowder, Neva Reid Yvonne Clendenin and Cheryl Manley, we wonder how the dances will ever be the same. But, most of our council members like the squares better, and not much emphasis is put on the rounds. (Heck, our Ramblers club doesn’t even have rounds.) This differs from our surrounding councils, so they may be the ones feeling the pinch. Still, if our council needs additional cuers, be sure we will be looking to out of council cuers.

Speaking of Dorothy Lowder, she had quite the memorial Nov 4 at the Oak Grove Community Club. It was fortunate that such a large venue was chosen, as any smaller would have been cramped. There were mixed levels of rounds afterwards featuring music from her teaches and some of the dances she choreographed. She was not well known within our council (although she lived within our council); she taught mostly within the Evergreen Council, but would do gigs here when asked. She was known for her patience and teaching cues correctly, rather than the fast way, with simple styling emphasizing proper footwork and correct body positioning.

I hope we can have more fast dances like our Oct 3 dance. Craig Abercrombie had us going so fast my petticoat spun around me making a complete circle. Maybe I should have tied it tighter, but at least it didn’t drop to the floor!

How did you like the elections? Our club lobbyist, Gerry Mander, has been sitting in Senator Phillip Buster’s office all day, hoping to see the senator for a state mandate about having square dances every night of the week, sort of like Henry Ford did in his company towns. But so far no luck.

Our New Dancer’s Jamboree will be Dec 12. Come join us for a B-51 dance. See our flyer in this magazine!

As a matter of fact, come visit us any Wednesday night. We have different callers and cuers each night (see our schedule in this magazine). In the words of our President, “We hire ‘em and fire ‘em so fast their heads spin!” -- Sort of like my petticoat I guess.

Happy Holidays! We are celebrating our club Christmas party on December 15th for club members only. We will enjoy a great meal together, be entertained, and exchange gifts. This is a great time for members to mix and mingle and get to know one another.

We are also very thankful this year for a roof that doesn’t leak and a great turn out for our annual breakfast. The breakfast and bazaar was a big success this year, so our taxes and insurance are paid up! Thanks to all of you who came out and supported us. Next big project is the annual Barn Sale on April 12 and 13, 2019. Mark your calendars!

Come join us for our 5th Saturday dance on December 29th with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. These all plus dances are a lot of fun, so come on out for a delightful evening on a cold winter’s night!

Happy Hoppers - Link
Did you know that nearly 3 squares of Happy Hoppers attended the Seaside Sashay at the end of October? It may have been hard to count all of our members since many of them have dual club memberships and do not always wear their Hopper badges, but we were there having fun dancing and visiting with friends we see only at events like the Sashay. We sincerely appreciate the clubs who organize this great weekend. Thank you! We know it is a lot of work.

One of the indisputable axioms of life is that things change over time, and so it is with the Hoppers as we settle in to our new home. This year for the first time we will not be having a New Year’s Eve dance because our new hall is not available to us on that date. While that part of our normal December activities has changed, others remain the same. We will start the month on December 1st with a Christmas Toys Dance. Each year we have collected toys for the Children’s Center at the last dance in November and at the first dance in December. The Children’s Center is a non-profit organization that provides mental health care to children of low income families. Our second dance, December 15th, fits the season perfectly with an all singing call dance and holiday treats for the break. We will finish up the month with a visitation to the Country Cut-ups on December 29th. We always have fun when we visit that lively group.

This last year has been a year of transition for the Hoppers, but we are confident that we are now settled in to a new home and ready to make new memories and friends as we travel through the new year 2019. We’re wishing all our square dancing friends and families a joyous holiday season and a wonderful 2019.

Scares and Squares 2018 is officially a wrap. Many stars aligned to create a wonderful dance weekend. We had to find a new venue this year, and the Oak Grove Community Club fit the bill perfectly. What a wonderful dance hall—our many out-of-town guests, and our callers, gave it rave reviews. Thanks to Bonnie and Eugene Ivy for their hard work maintaining this hall. It’s a real treasure. Every member of our club stepped up in some way to help put on this weekend. From Friday night’s trail-in dance featuring an array of picnic foods and autumnal delicacies, to Saturday’s costume contest (so many creative people!), to Sunday’s trail-out dance, we kept dancing and singing and moving to the grooving. We will square up again in 2019. Mark your calendars for October 25-27!

Our 10 students are making tremendous progress at our Wednesday lessons. They are looking forward to heading out to some new dancer jamborees. The Ramblers don’t sponsor a jamboree, but we encourage our students to attend those sponsored by other clubs.

All our monthly dances feature stupendous callers, but we have some real treats in store for you in the coming months—all at the Milwaukie Grange:

December 8: Diana Wedel, potluck at 6:30, alternating Mainstream and Plus from 7:30 to 9:30.

January 12: Stephen Cole, potluck at 6:30, alternating Mainstream and Plus from 7:30 to 9:30. This is our Black and White Dance, creative combinations of black and white are encouraged!

February 9: Anne Uebelacker. Dancing starts at 7:30.

Here are the rules you need to know for Ramblers dances:

Casual attire encouraged. Wear what makes you feel comfortable.

Solo dancers warmly welcomed.

No round dancing—only squares.

Ramblers dances are high energy. You will get your steps in!

We wish everyone happy holidays and hope to see you in a square!

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

Again & again, don't forget the "Game Basket" to benefit the next "Young at Heart" Dance. This dance will be next July. The precise date and place has yet to be decided. If you have any games or puzzles to donate to this basket, let Lorri or Lois know. All proceeds will go to the "Young at Heart" or Youth Dance. Lorri will have this basket at all the dances she attends, so you can purchase raffle tickets.

The Rogue Sis-Q Council has taken sponsorship of the "Pajamarama" on January 11, 2019. This will become an annual "New Dancer" dance. The Callers & Cuers sponsor "New Dancer" dances in December and February, so this should be an excellent fit and give the newbies one more arena to practice their newly learned skill. We are also thinking about sponsoring a few more "New Dancer" dances for the students. They need all the help they can get, as we all did at this stage of our learning.

The 5th Friday Council Dance will be on November 30th in Medford. Advanced is 630-730; pre-rounds 730 and MS/Plus 8-1030. The Caller is Lawrence Johnstone & Cuer is Rikki Lobato.

There are lots of "Holiday" dances and get-together's going on, so try to attend as many as possible and share the "Holiday Spirit" with all you meet.

Happy Holidays!!!

The next Council meeting will be December 4, 2018 at Round Table Pizza in Poplar Square.

The Charlie's have a great class going with 8 students who seem to really be enjoying themselves. We had a special guest instructor on November 8th - Richard Lane came down to teach class while our instructor Chuck Simpkins was out of town. The two dances in November were great fun!!! J Domis always brings dancers out and we had Mike Sikorsky & Cathy Houston on Nov 17!! We had 5 squares for Nov 17th dance. If you missed either dance - you truly missed a great time!!

December 1st is the Charlie Brown Squares 51st Birthday dance with the fabulous Michael Kellogg & MaryAnn Callahan!!! This is definitely one to come visit for - these are two of the best talents!!!! 6pm Advanced 730 Pre Rounds & 8-1030 MS/Plus tips & rounds. Dec 15th we will have Phil Ramey and Elaine Funk doing our Christmas Cookie Exchange dance. Will be lots of fun.

The Boatnik Committee is busy planning and looking forward to our 2019 Festival Memorial weekend with Joe Saltel & TJ (Bruce) Chadd - both are wonderful. Plan to come down!!

We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season surrounded by friends and family!! We would love to see you in a square this year!!

Circle N Square held our Thanksgiving dance Saturday Nov 16. There were 2 squares, and even did a couple 6 couple tips. A big thanks to our Oregon dancers, and a visiting couple from the Redding area. A big thank you for supporting us as we were competing with a National Caller in Grants Pass. It's good to see Joel and Linda Helend back dancing. Annie Blaylock did a few line dances, which provides a nice change to our party nights. We hope she will continue this new twist to our party nights. We will hold our Christmas dance December 15, and want to invite everyone! We are looking into possibly starting another new dancer class in January, there has been reports of interest from people who were not able to start in September. The club has been, and will be going thru some changes with a possible changing of the guards as far as officers and other things. We have tentatively booked a caller for our Gold Diggers Dance 2019, look for fliers and more info.

Looking forward to the holidays, I feel a little guilty as I reflect on what has happened in our state this month. It hit home for me as my brother lost his home in the Camp fire. Please pray for all of the devastation and those who have been severely impacted by the fires and other tragedies in California.

Hope to see you soon

Classes are still going well. We have a couple of dancers who are former dancers and are refreshing the activity and are having a ball. On Thursday, November 15, the class hosted their annual Thanksgiving Potluck. They will be doing the same thing on December 20 with their Christmas Potluck. It is free to all dancers.

Monday Plus class is going great. There is still room for one more week of new dancers to the class. Come on out from 630-830 for the class to refresh or learn. We have a great time. Phil is a lot of fun.

The next "Game Night" will be January 18. What a lot of fun we have. Some Friday night when we have "Game Night" you should join us. It is a "Hoot." If you don't play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on, or, if there is some other game you would like to play, let us know. We are open to most any table game. The theme for the potluck in January will be "Mexican." That was the one that started the whole thing. Wow! What a great idea.

Wayne's Advanced class is from 6-730pm. The workshop is from 730-830 or so.

A lot of Stars when to Grants Pass to dance on Nov 3. There were enough of us present to retrieve a banner from the Charlie's. The November 17 Charlie Dance with Mike Sikorsky was well attended and, as usual, a lot of fun. Mike is always quite a showman and puts on a great dance.

Star thru, square thru,

See you in a Square

On Saturday, October 6th the Hillsboro IOOF Hall was rocking with 136 dancers, setting a 2018 record for Anniversary Dance attendance. The Sunset Promenaders 33rd Anniversary dance was indeed very good! Mike Stout and Darrell Kalmbach called while Ken Pratt and Julie Stout cued a great dance. The Promenaders went all out serving the dancers a ham dinner before the dance. Ten TVC clubs were in attendance with many other visitors, one from Texas.

On October 20th Mix ‘N Mingle celebrated their 34th Anniversary with a full dance floor and lots of fun. The River City Dancers from the PAC and the TVC Hoedowners were both awarded banners for their participation. Randy Dibble and Jeanine Norden called and cued a spirited and fun dance.

Our next Council event is the New Years Eve Dance, held at the IOOF Hall, 267 E Main St. Hillsboro, OR 97123. This dance will feature Darrell Kalmbach calling with Randy Lewis cueing, mainstream with every third tip plus. The dance begins at 9PM and lasts until 12:15AM of January 1st 2019. December has arrived in the beautiful Northwest. It has snow, rain, hail, and hot square dancing. The Columbia River Dancers, just recovering from our Burn-Off, will start the Christmas Season with Craig and Molly Combs doing our calling and cueing on December 8th.

Our Christmas dance on December 22nd will feature our own Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. What a great way to get ready for Santa. Jim's smooth and yet challenging way makes for a great time.

My granddaughter says one of the reasons she enjoys square dancing is that you can do it to almost any kind of music. It will be interesting to see what these two callers come up with this wintery season. Come join us. We dance plus from 7 to 8 and mainstream from 8 pm on. We have the reputation that everyone gets to dance so if you are a single, we welcome you.

If you are looking for a place to bring in the new year, look no farther that the Hazel Dell Grange. Jim Hattrick and Adam Christman will be there along with the CRDancers. Watch for more information on our website.

Again this year we headed to Seaside for our beach trip early in October. The weather was mostly sunny and nice. Besides walking on the board walk along the beach, taking in beautiful sunsets, we had games and lots of good food. Kay Rogers supplied many of the gifts/prizes and members brought white elephant items selected by game players. The top sought after prizes were free admissions to the aquarium for 6 lucky winners (thanks Kay).

We had such a good time helping the Sunset Promenaders celebrate their anniversary to the great calling of Mike Stout and Darrell Kalmbach. A few of us also joined M & M's to celebrate their anniversary.

We had about 14 members at Seaside Sashay. Everyone had a good time. It was mostly sunny Saturday morning with a great turnout to dance on the turnaround which is always a highlight. The rain did come later in the day, but did not curb our enthusiasm.

We had a fun Halloween dance on October 29th, with some interesting costumes.

The Eager Beavers are co-hosting, along with Sunset Promenaders, the TVC New Year's Eve Dance. 9:00 pm to 12:15 pm. $8.00 each. Every third tip will be Plus. We will have an open break with appetizers, finger foods, and desserts. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling and Randy Lewis will be cueing.

Starting Monday February 4th at noon, we will be having Plus lessons. Our three great callers will be instructing again. Daryl Clendenin (1st & 5th Mondays), Darrell Kalmbach (2nd & 4th Mondays), and Jim Hattrick (3rd Mondays) See flyer on our website www.EagerBeavers.info. If you are already a Plus dancer, this is a great time to brush up on Plus .

Check out the OFN website: http://ofn.club for all club flyers and information regarding Mid-Winter.

Even if you work on Mondays, you can join us once in a while; we dance every Monday, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our callers keep us on our toes as each week, always seeming to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. We dance from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Hayshakers - Link
Beginning in November, the Hayshakers have a new Board of Directors with Craig Holt*, President; Nguyen Trung*, Vice-President; Dale Worthington, Secretary; Cynthia Weber, Treasurer; Ricia Parcher* and Helen Pitkanen-Herold*, Members at Large; and Kathy Worthington, Past-President [* - new to Board]. The Club wishes to thank Sylvia Davis for her many years of service.

Also beginning in November, the Hayshakers will be dancing the 3rd and 5th Fridays of the month. Many considerations were taken into account: availability of the Pacific Grange, the importation of callers and cuers, contra dance nights in Astoria, Vancouver & Portland, and the ability to visit Wave-Stepper and R-Square-D dances on a regular basis. Mark Wheeler continues as our regular caller with Craig Abercrombie substituting from time to time.

The 18th annual Seaside Sashay held in conjunction with the Sunset Promenaders at the end of October was a great success. The Hayshakers would like to thank all the happy dancers who attended and those who helped behind the scenes. We’ll do it again next year!

Hoedowners - Link
This October turned out to be one of those postcard pretty months; beautiful fall color, leaves accumulating in piles, splendid sunsets and warm, sunlit afternoons. I hope you enjoyed it as much as Hoedowners did. Our October dancing began on the 6th when thirty Hoedowners attended the Sunset Promenaders’ 33rd Anniversary Dance. We love a celebration and we’re never ones to miss a wonderful ham dinner, those famous rolls and an opportunity to dance with friends.

Hoedowners decided to hold their first Pirate Dance on October 13th. No, not a dance celebrating the Pittsburgh Pirates but those swashbuckling denizens of the high seas who capture the imagination of young and old; Black Beard, Black Pearls, Jack Sparrow, and rides at Disneyland. I don’t believe it’s easy to produce an appropriate outfit looking in one’s closet so there have to be a number of sources for the tricorn hats, corsets, waist coats, sashes, jewelry, knee high boots, massive belts, daggers, swords and pistols that adorned the mutinous crowd. The ballroom was at its best with chest of booty, long lost skeletons and a rolling loop of pirate adventures on the screen. Everyone was encouraged or rounded up by the headstrong Captain Van Winkle and his first mate Colleen for photos in front of the pirate ship. And as always, the buccaneers retired to a table laden with hearty food, mead and gold doubloons, arrgh! (Photos on www.hoedowners.info, Picture Tab)

The “sea” theme for October was repeated for the Seaside Sashay, October 26th & 27th. Hoedowners always enjoy this festival and a group of 26 attended. The dancing was marvelous and the prizes generous. Who could ask for a better sunny October morning for dancing at the Turn-Around? The music and dancers attracted quite a crowd on the ground while folks watched from their room balconies. The Hoedowner dinner Saturday night was attended by 22 and although the rain came in for the evening, the post party lasted until 1 am. What a great weekend of dance and friendship.

What’s happening in December? It’s the holidays, silly so to kick the month off we’re having a Dancers in Toyland Dance on the 8th. Please donate a toy and if you’re in the mood dress up as an action figure, toy or doll.

On December 22nd we’re hosting a Sounds of Christmas Dance with all singing calls. Please join us and sing along.

Our 34th Birthday Dance has come and gone amidst much dancing, laughter, and fellowship.

Lindie put up the decorations her mother had made for us long years ago, along with more recent club banners. Her mother made pillows shaped like individual M'nMs and long ones to resemble packets of M'nMs.

Instead of filling jars with M&Ms for people to guess the total, she put little packets of different kinds of M&Ms into the jars to make figuring the number in each jar more difficult to calculate. Some people had it down to a science the original way. Nobody was allowed to win more than one prize.

The dance floor was festive with all the dancers. Hoedowners and River City Dancers each had enough club members to take home a banner for us to retrieve at a later date. We also welcomed dancers from the Tualatin Valley Council. Randy Dibble called mainstream for the event, and Jeanine Norden cued popular rounds.

The evening ended downstairs with ice cream and chocolate cake and more laughter and fellowship.

Please bring items for the Canned Food Dance to our December 15th dance (or before if you can't make it to that dance.)

If you haven't come to Kelso, WA on the second weekend of October to our Octoberfest weekend, I'd like to give you an idea what to expect, you may want to attend next year. Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman are our callers, they are a great combination. Susan Healea has a knack of making everyone feel they are wonderful round dancers. We begin with a dance Friday night, Saturday morning we take those interested in finding "just the right bargain" on a tour of local garage sales, followed by a tummy warming soup lunch. Squares and rounds in the afternoon, Caller and Cuer choice of dance moves. German dinner, 60 joined us this year. Before we begin another evening of dancing, River City Riders entertain us with their "horsing around", 8 ponies and riders dance Plus. The evening ends with pie. We were blessed with the perfect weather this year (the weather isn't guaranteed)

Our Mainstream dances in December are on Saturdays, the 1st and 15th. The theme for both dances is Christmas and we also are having food drive too. We want to be able to give a lot of non-perishable food to the Food Bank so they can give food to the less fortunate. Our Mainstream caller is Mike Stout and cuer is Ken Pratt.

Our December Plus dances are on Thursdays, the 6th and 20th with Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt calling and cueing.

All our dances start with Intermediate Rounds at 7:00 until 7:30, square dance with Rounds from 7:30 to 9:30 with a potluck break at the end. We are located in Hillsboro upstairs on Mains Street and Third Street (267 E. Main St.). We enjoy visits, please come visit us.

We had another successful Seaside Sashay Festival this year with about 200 dancers attending. We enjoyed the dancing and also the time visiting old and new friends. The shopping and eating in Seaside is very good and we walked our legs off doing that. There were about 80 prizes given and the split the pot was big both nights. The weather was quite good with sunshine and a light breeze until Saturday night when it did shower several times. As we drove home we noticed again that it is not that far to Seaside, and it is nice scenery along the way.

We start our square dance lessons in January and we are working to get our advertisements organized and hopefully get some new students. The last couple of years we have grown our membership and hope to continue that trend. If you or any of your friends want to take lessons in January on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00 at our hall which is the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall. There is good parking on the street or in the bank parking lot across the street.

If you have questions please call 503-848-3841 and we will try to answer them.

Toe Draggers - Link
Toes had a great Pink Dance to support cancer research. We got the party started with 3 lively "little" ladies dancing a skit to "Trashy Women" and then a special treat, a set of robust calls from Jonny Roberts (Kathy & Tim's son) and KC that ultimately blew the fuse in the speakers to end a great dance. Toe's raised over $1,600 for the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU.

December 7th will be our "Old Fashion Christmas" dance, bring a can or 2 of food for the food bank. December 21st will be our "The Night Before Christmas" dance. Both dances will feature our great caller KC and (Linda) and our wonderful Bev and (Harlan) cueing.

Please come and dance with us, we love visitors.

Tri Squares - Link
In October Tri Squares enjoyed making two visitations, to the Sunset Promenaders anniversary dance and to the Chaps & Petticoats where both our caller and cuer were headlining. Also our Sunday afternoon Waltz and B-51 lessons continued very well.

On November 4th we held a terrific “New Dancer Jamboree” with eight squares! Thanks to everyone for your support! On the tenth we’ll have a “Grateful Harvest Pie Party” dance, but on our second dance night, the day after Thanksgiving, we’ll be dark to allow for more family time for everyone.

Our December dances begin on Saturday, the 8th, with our holiday dance, "Sounds of the Season" with Terry Halley and Sandra Pinion calling and cueing. Then on Friday December 28th we will feature music from the Big Band era and the Forties at our "Snowflake Ball". Our dances begin with rounds at 7:30 followed by plus at 7:45 until 8:00. We then dance mainstream until 10:00 with refreshments served after the dance.

In December we’ll have our club’s annual holiday dinner, this year at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Sherwood, again including our favorite white elephant gift exchange where some gifts seem to magically reappear from year to year. Also our Waltz and B-51 lessons will be suspended until January.

Leaves are falling and temperatures have dropped here in the Umpqua Valley; however, we are enjoying the season as we prepare for the coming holidays. Here at the barn we are prepping for one of our biggest fundraisers of the year…our wreath sale. Check out our website for more information and order your wreath in time to enjoy it for the whole season.

We had a great time dancing in the Veteran’s Day Parade here in Roseburg. We always enjoy celebrating those who have sacrificed for our country. We are lucky to have the Umpqua Area Council support this event each year.

We had a blast at our Harvest Dance in November. The club provided a turkey and we all brought side dishes to share. The best part of this dance is that we have a student level dance prior to the mainstream dance. This is often the first time the students get a chance to dance in a real dance setting. It is fun to see them on the dance floor having a great time.

Our craft bazaar is coming up soon. Check out our website for more information and let us know if you are interested in joining us and setting up a table. I hear we may have a jolly visitor joining us!

Remember that we love visitors and are only a short drive on I5! We hope to see you and your family in square this holiday season!

Happy dancing,

Robin Faltersack
