A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs
Printed 25 November 2014
Editor's Note
This is the first demonstration issue of the online OFN. I only received
flyers from the Rogue-Sis-Q Council and the Tualatin Valley Council, and I
haven't received any club news at all, so this is mostly information from
the state directory.
If your dance information is incorrect, you can fix that by going to the
state directory club info area. Use the "Dance" page
to update your regular dance information, and use the "Edit" page to edit
specific dance information and update flyers.
For now, please send your club and council news articles directly to me.
Please be patient as we try to make this a useful resources for dancers
both within and outside of the Federation.
We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of
the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN.
To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:
Federation Events
Mid-Winter Festival is coming up at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany,
January 23 to 25, 2015.
Everything in the When & Where is extracted from the state directory
information. If you find that your club information is wrong, you can
fix that by going to the directory information
area and fixing your data.

Beachcombers danced on October 25, the day of the big storm that hit early that morning. Our hall weathered the storm, but the dock in Port Orford suffered a lot of damage including the loss of a great little restaurant on the dock. We had about 1 1/2 square of brave dancers that turned out in spite of high winds and power outages in some parts of Coos and Curry counties. Coleeta and Cathy did a great job of calling and cueing for us. We now have an official club cuer, our long-time friend, Cathy Houston. We look forward to many great dances! We will be dancing again on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock on November 22. We will be hosting South Coast New Year's Eve Dance at 6 p.m. at the Beachcombers Cove. Come join us for an early dance!

Tualatin Valley Council
On the last Sunday of September, the Tualatin Valley Council held our annual Hahn Barn Dance. With mildly warm temperatures we had enthusiastic dancers having a good time in the loft. We started the evening with a pot luck dinner by the pond with Mother Nature being very kind! After trying to finish all of the desserts, the 11 squares of dancers enjoyed the calling of Chuck Garner and Mike Stout with cueing provided by Julie Stiers and Julie Stout. The Sunset Promenaders won the TVC banner for having the highest percentage of their club in attendance. The TVC was well represented with 8 of the 10 clubs having members present. We wish to thank Gary and Bette Hahn for their gracious hospitality. Their contribution to this event is truly outstanding.
The next Council event will be a 5th Saturday dance on November 29th. This will be a mainstream dance featuring the calling of the Wildcards and cueing by Helen Halley. It will be held at Aloha Grange from 7:30pm - 10:00pm.
Our visitation to Tri-Squares was a good opportunity to visit with dancers that we do not often see. We certainly enjoyed their great hospitality. Thank you.
The longest active square dancer in the state has to be our own Genevieve Churchill who has probably served on every local and state committee that exists. She has received many honors over the years but this time she was honored by the callers at Dance a Rama for the many years of service to the square dance community. I think I speak for many people when I say: Thank you for all the years of hard work, Genevieve. Speaking of Dance a Rama, it was terrific, well organized, and enjoyed by those attending.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Give extra thanks to all our wonderful callers and cuers who make our dances special. And thanks to all those great dancers who make it an event.
All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:15-3:15 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info.

What a spectacular September we enjoyed this year, spectacular weather, spectacular sunsets and spectacular activities. We kicked off the month with our Knobby Knees dance and it was certainly warm enough for short, shorts. Everyone was casual and cool.
On Sunday the 14th we had our kickoff event, the annual Fall Dinner Out at the Old Spaghetti Factory. We had a chance to catch up on summer activities before lessons began. September 17th was the first fall lesson and it’s an exciting class. We have four charming youngsters taking with us. Two boys and two girls who are all pros at learning dance steps as they take a mix of ballet, hip hop and jazz too.
Our Indian Summer Dance was the 27th. The Running Bear Badge was available to earn. That song is 55 years old and although performed by Johnny Preston was written by The Big Bopper. Remember him?
Fourteen Hoedowners attended the Hahn Barn Dance and once again it was perfect weather for a potluck picnic and dance.
On the 29th, ten of us had a great evening doing a wine and paint event. Every painting was different and maybe a Rorschach test as well. We had a mini art show at the next Wednesday lesson. Was it a juried event? No, but you could see the artistic flair of each artist.
What is a more iconic image than that of the American West? It is so much a part of our lexicon in movies, music and mythology. Please come and celebrate this part of our heritage on November 8th at our Wild, Wild West Dance. Then, to continue our month of Americana, we’ll be having our 7th Annual Turkey Toss on November 22nd. It’s a madcap combination of Thanksgiving and the carnival midway where a lucky toss can win you a turkey for your table.
Our Trophy Dance is this first Saturday in November. It will be mainstream dance, a time for people to have their ambassador cards signed. It will also be the time for the trophy to be passed along to the club with the highest percentage of members attending. All of this will be celebrated with cake and ice cream for our 30th Birthday Dance.

Welcome autumn, time for meeting new dancers and putting the dog days of a beautiful summer to rest. R Square D had a full September. We entertained four squares of rail riding hobos on the 12th and enjoyed a chili feed after the dance. Best dressed Hobo's were Mary McDaniel and Marv Pope. We enjoyed the calling of Craig Abercrombie who kept the floor rocking. The next day we had a visitation to the River City dancers and collected a banner. Our monthly meeting was held at Dick and Sandy Sims home with lots of good Mexican themed food. Thank you to our Hosts.
The clubs yearly camping trip to Vista Park in Skamokawa WA was on a beautiful weekend with good fellowship and great food for all. Over 30 people camped, stayed in yurts, tents, trailers and motor homes. A good time was had by all.
November 14th brings us a Veterans Day dance with guest caller Steve Noseck and on the 22nd we welcome all to join us in our Thanksgiving dance.
Square Dance classes taught by Craig Abercrombie are on Wednesday nights at the Kelso Senior Center, Plus at 6:00, basic at 7:00 and Mainstream at 8:30. For more information about our club, Please visit our web site at www.r-square-d.info.

The Club Campout was at Devil’s Lake RV Resort in Lincoln City and was attended by 46 people from the Promenaders and several other clubs. The weather was awesome and everyone seemed to have a good time. We put together puzzles, sang songs, danced, visited, ate, and much more.
The Promenaders celebrated our 29th Anniversary with a dinner and dance on October 4th. Thanks to several clubs and independent dancers we had a big success with 97 dancers filling our dance floor as Chuck Garner called and Ken Pratt cued. We also had Harold (Barbara) Kleve call a tip, he was our former caller and we enjoyed having them participate. Prior to the dance we had a ham dinner with all the trimmings and everyone seemed to enjoy the meal; the Club worked hard to make this a special event. Thank you all for coming and your support.

In September Toedragger's celebrated our 39th Anniversary with black-berry and blueberry dessert's and lot's of visitors.
On September 14th, at our "Pink Dance" for the cure, we were able to donate $1284.00 to the Barbara G Kolman foundation. Thanks to all the Toe's, visitors, callers and cuers who supported this endeavor by donating baskets, buying tickets for all the goodies, and giving time and money so generously. We collected about a third more than last year. Whoopee!
Also in September several of us along with KC and Bev went to dance at two assisted living care facilities. We had a great time talking to the people and giving them some fun entertainment, We met two people who said they had square danced many years ago, also one guy "Bob" who had danced with the Eager Beavers until fairly recently.
On November 7th and 14th we will be travelling to Australia for Outback dances. We have lots of great decorations for each place we visit. So come get your Passports and join the trip. These dances are also our annual food drive to collect food for those less fortunate.
It should be noted that TriSquares are auditioning for a new permanent cuer to replace our beloved Jackie, who has moved so far away it is impractical for her to travel to Tigard regularly. While we are missing her greatly, we will be using guest cuers until we find one that fits in with our club. Cuers interested in visiting us should call Frank Collett at 503-686-9835 (his cell).
We also want to thank Duane Cope of Sign Scope Signs of Tigard for his original production of our sign about our lessons and his annual changes (so far) of the lesson dates on the sign. The changes have been gratis, and that is a big help. Thanks, Duane! Now, if we can just get him and his wife to the lessons.....
Our Anniversary dance was a great success, with 62 people in attendance. The Halley brothers, Mike and Terry, were our callers, and Jackie Gale and Helen Halley shared cueing calls. Three clubs won banners from us. The picture board, with TriSquares members at the age of sixteen, provided much puzzlement and delight at trying to place names with pictures. At least one poodle skirt made its way to the dance.
November themes are Saints, Sinners, and Scarecrows for November 1; and a Greatful Harvest and Pie Party for November 21. Sure hope to see YOU in a square!

As fall settles in, Valley Squares has filled our dancing days with autumn themes. At our Back to School dance we collected school supplies to donate to local children. The notebooks, pens, crayons, and pencils served double duty as table decorations.
Our Goodbye to summer dance was called by Craig Abercrombie, who provided a fun evening for us and our guests from Rosetown Ramblers, Tri-Squares, Toe Draggers, and Hoedowners. We appreciate the support of the dancing community as our membership is smaller this year. We also enjoyed supporting our fellow clubs with official visitations to Wave Steppers and the Hahn Barn Dance.
Our Mastering Mainstream/Beginning Plus lessons have been fun and challenging. Come join us Tuesday nights at 7 p.m., Aloha Grange.
Please join us for our dance on November 1 and our Tailgate Party November 15 where hot dogs and tailgate snacks will be served before the dance at 6:15.

The Wave Steppers are dark through the winter months. We will resume our normal schedule in May of 2015.
We’re only semi-dark, though, remember. Winter is Class Time. Round dance classes, which started September 7, will continue until about Christmas. They’re at the Rockaway Beach Community Center; on Sundays, 3-5 p.m. The Community Center is on the north end of town, just before you get to the high school. Classes are taught by veteran cuer Connie Clark, and cost just $5 per person per session.
And square dance classes, taught again by caller Joe Wrabek, will happen again in January, and like this year’s classes, will be free. Square dance classes will be held on Wednesday nights at the Elks Lodge in Tillamook, and begin at 6 p.m. We’ll still be dancing at the Tillamook Elks on Wednesday nights through the fall and early winter; since the last class’s students have learned just about all of the mainstream program, what we’re doing is mostly practice. If you’re in the area, do come. There are usually cookies.
