A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs
Printed 13 December 2014
President's Corner
I would like to wish everybody a fun and enjoyable Holiday Season. Kathy and I have just gotten back from visiting my brother in Florida. We had a fun time and enjoyed square and round dancing while we were there.
Prior to our leaving for Florida, Kathy and I, along with our friend Sylvia, went to the Juniper Jubilee in Mitchell. We then traveled down to the KC Squares Potato Festival in Klamath Falls. One week later we were at the Seaside Sashay Square Dance Festival in Seaside. We have found out that every Special Dance or Festival has something .Special. to offer. When we attended the Central Oregon Round-Up they had a Flash-Mob dance in downtown Sisters. At the Battle Rock Week-End, we had fun dancing on the beach and in the surf. In attending the Hahn Barn Dance it was the fabulous picnic and dancing in the loft of the barn. When we were at the Juniper Jubilee we danced at the Painted Hills Overlook and on Main Street. We also took 3rd Place in the Spud Gun Shootout. At the KC Squares Potato Festival we had fun at the Potato Festival Parade. The Seaside Sashay was great even with dancing at the Turnaround being rained out. However the weather did not dampen the spirits for participating in the Passport Promenade.
In following my agenda, to encourage attendance at Festivals and Special Dances, I have asked Barbara Wines, Federation Education Chairman, to set up a seminar at the Mid-Winter Festival. This seminar is to gather and pass along information to clubs and councils on ways to make their dances, special dances, and festivals more Fun and Special. I would encourage every club and council to have at least one individual attend this seminar and take back helpful information for their club or council.
Editor's Note
I appreciate your patience as we get things rolling. We've corrected
a number of typos in the dance information, and we're starting to get
news, flyers, and photos to come in.
Remember, if your dance information is incorrect, you can fix that by going
to the
state directory club info area. Use the "Dance" page
to update your regular dance information, and use the "Edit" page to edit
specific dance information and update flyers.
Please continue to send your club and council news articles to your council's
Area Editor, who will forward them all to me.
Please be patient as we try to make this a useful resources for dancers
both within and outside of the Federation.

Whirl-A-Ways annual "Friendship Dinner" in late October was attended by 39 who enjoyed great food, a lot of visiting, and fun games. A special 'Thank You' to Rick and Sharon Stuller for again hosting us in their large RV garage at their home.
On December 13 at our regular dance evening we will again collect gifts and needed items for the children at Jasper Mountain--a local recovery center for abused children from all over the state of Oregon.
Then on Saturday, December 20 we will join with Danebo Circle-8 and Single Trees clubs for a special, big Christmas Dance.
Thus Whirl-A-Ways will go DARK on December 27.
The New Years Eve dance on December 31 will again be hosted by caller, Roger Putzler and his wife Linda, and cuer Christina Corelli and her hubby Kirby Goode, at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield, for a memorable evening of fun dancing with our friends from our area!
Whirl-A-Ways send wishes to everyone for a wonderful Christmas season, and the very best in the New Year.

One of our greatest finds, by perspective member Linda Tallmon, was the original banner of our club from 1965! It was found at the estate sale of Joyce Morgan recently. Joyce was the last of our charter members to resign from the club about eight years ago.
Like many people in our club, our club has admired the River City Riders at such events as the Seaside Sashay. I had been told that they require regular feeding and watering like all livestock. What I wasn't told (until backstage) is that they were actually referring to the riders! We said our good-by's as the riders headed off to the Seaside afterparty, presumably for bags of oats and water.

Season's greetings from the Buzzin' bees. It is the start of one of the busiest seasons of the year. I urge everyone to take some time to be with friends and family at this time of the year. For some, it is a tough season to get through.
October's theme dance " Raining cats and dogs" happened on a dry night but we took in a lot of pet food and supplies that we donated to the Humane Society and a few days after the dance the mega rain started. By the time you read this we will have had our first Elvis dance and we're very much looking forward to our guest caller, Mark Wheeler. We decided to take a different direction with our holiday dance this year. Instead of donating toys for tots we decided to honor our senior citizens and collect donations of toiletries and socks for donation to local assisted living facilities. We have 4 assisted living facilities within 2 miles of the Hazel Dell Grange so we are hoping for a large dance and large donations. I know I will be hitting Fred Meyers "early bird" socks sale on the day after Thanksgiving.
We will be starting lessons again in January and the date has yet to be determined. We do lessons on Sundays at 6 p.m..
I want to thank all of our club members for working so hard to keep our club going. We have a good and group of people. I wish you Happy Holidays and a healthy New Year.

Silver City Squares hosted their October Fest. -- Dinner and dance on October 10th and our Club was there and took back a banner.
A few of us Chaps attended the Seaside Sashay. Despite the blustery weather, the turnout was great. Jim Hattrick and Craig Abercrombie gave good harmony to the dance and kept us smiling. Debbie Taylor, was amazing - a bundle of energy was present in her rounds. Thank you to the Worthington's, Hayshakers and Sunset Promenaders for a well enjoyed event.
We welcome all to join the Chaps & Petticoats on December 19th when George Hermann and Sandra Pinion call and cue an evening of all-singing-calls. It is how our club ends the year.
How unbelievable that this year is almost over! Have a joy-filled Christmas and a blessed New 2015 Year!

Thanks to all of you who supported our Annual Pancake Breakfast in October! The Bed and Breakfast tickets were won by square dancers Charlie and Be Lanier. The wood raffle went to a neighbor of the Barn, which made delivery easy.
The 3rd Saturday in October saw the Boring Barn filled with 95 dancers! There was a large visitation from the Hoedowners on their Mystery trip, complemented by a visitation from the Bachelors and Bachelorettes. Some of us Cut-Ups have never seen so many squares in the Barn, the long time members said this was a common site 25-30 years ago. Oh, for the good old days!
The month ended with seven members attending the Seaside Sashay, and then Halloween night several showed up at the PAC 5th Friday dance. It is important to get out and support other events, and invite them to ours.
Looking forward, we will have busy time. November has a 5th Saturday and there will be a Pioneer theme dance. Our mainstream lessons have been accelerated to finish by the end of December. December will bring our Christmas party for the club on December 13th. We will end the year with a New Year's Eve dance with a taco bar.

"A Night in Venice" will be the theme of our New Years Eve dance this year. The Front Porch Trio (Jim Hattrick, Craig Abercrombie, and Adam Christman) will do whatever it takes to keep us moving to the music. Dinner will be included (Italian food!) in this special event. It is rumored that, in keeping with the theme, a moat will be excavated around the Clark County Square Dance Center and filled with water. If this plan works out, gondola service, with gondoliers singing operatic arias, would be provided to move our guests from the parking lot to the dance venue. It should be quite an occasion!!
We now have a monthly cycle for our Monday evening square dance lessons. From now until May, we encourage beginning dancers to start introductory lessons on the first Monday of every month at 7:30. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with this new lesson format, allowing individuals to move up to higher levels at their own speed. Plus lessons start at 6:30. Mainstream lessons are available starting at 9:15.
As always, we have Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00. Jim Hattrick serves as both caller and cuer.
November 1 was a first Saturday, a regular dance night for us, but we were dark to accommodate the Royal Romp. So, we seized the rare opportunity to have a visitation with the Buzzin' Bees, at the Hazel Dell Grange Hall.

It was a day Winnie the Pooh would have loved! A blustery Saturday when we headed out on our Mystery Trip. Were these winds and rains part of the planning? Square dancing that began under the Spruce Goose and ended with the 'red-headed Sisters' of the Willamette Squares for their Birthday Dance. Thank you for the warm hospitality and the opportunity to bring the day to a happy conclusion by 'dancing up a storm'.
Our 'Gospel Christmas Dance' (December 6) will usher in the Holiday Season. The Square Dancing will start with a mini-teach of a Plus move at 7:50pm. Look for stocking stuffers, baked goods and small decorations for the table and tree at our Silent Auction. 'Salute to Santa' (December 20) gives us one more chance to dance with playful enthusiasm just before the joyful preparation to Christmas itself.
Think South! No, even further! South! You're getting warmer. . . Remember the 'Pearl of the Pacific' . . . Now you're HOT! In late December, we'll be starting the pre-sale of tickets for our 55th Anniversary Dance in May 2015. The Oaky Doaks will be coming your way (with tickets) in the New Year so you can ensure a fun evening with us next May. Watch for more teasers next month.

Beachcombers danced on October 25, the day of the big storm that hit early that morning. Our hall weathered the storm, but the dock in Port Orford suffered a lot of damage including the loss of a great little restaurant on the dock. We had about 1 1/2 square of brave dancers that turned out in spite of high winds and power outages in some parts of Coos and Curry counties. Coleeta and Cathy did a great job of calling and cueing for us. We now have an official club cuer, our long-time friend, Cathy Houston. We look forward to many great dances! We will be dancing again on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock on November 22. We will be hosting South Coast New Year's Eve Dance at 6 p.m. at the Beachcombers Cove. Come join us for an early dance!

Thirty one round dancers attended the second TVC Round Dance Party on October 31. Besides being Halloween night, it was the first night of Royal Romp in Vancouver, apparently resulting in half of last year's attendance. Ken Pratt was the cuer for the evening.
The next Council event will be our annual New Year's Eve dance, held at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro. Scott Zinser is the featured caller with Molly Combs cueing. This is a ticket sale dance. They can be purchased in advance through TVC officers, or club delegates at each of the TVC clubs. There are not too many tickets left, so you need to get yours soon. The evening will begin with a dinner at 7:30 with Pre-Rounds at 8:30, and Mainstream at 9:00. Every 3rd tip will be Plus including intermediate rounds. One tip will be called after midnight. Ticket costs: $13 per person or $25 when two are purchased at the same time.
Our visitation to Tumbleweeds was delicious in more ways than one. First we managed to retrieve our beloved beaver by bringing a dozen dancers. But the dancers say the lunch provided by the Tumbleweeds was just as delicious. Thanks to the Tumbleweeds for their much appreciated hospitality. Thanks also go to Joyce Hooper cueing and Jim Hattrick calling.
The Eager Beavers did a square dance presentation at Prestige Senior Living for a small but appreciative audience.
Because of multiple conflicts only nine of us were able to attend the CREW Dance hosted by the Golden Squares at Country Club Estates in Woodburn. We all really enjoyed dancing to those four great callers.
Our Harvest Dance was a mainstream dance for those earning a TVC Ambassador's Badge. Callers George Clark and Norm Yoder called a great dance, switching from Plus to Mainstream. Although dancing was enjoyable I think many of us were very excited to see tables set with a mountain of chicken and various delicious side dishes. And, of course, we all loaded our plates with desserts.
Wishing everyone Happy Holidays. Hope all can celebrate by dancing.
All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:15-3:15 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info.

Well October just blew by like a cool autumn breeze. Our Harvest Dance was held October 11th. Corn stalks and hay bales, scarecrows and crates of produce decorated the ballroom.
The bounteous harvest theme continued on October 18th for our Mystery Trip. We boarded the bus and headed north and followed along the Columbia River to the Bridge of the Gods before crossing back into Oregon. It was a beautiful day which enabled us to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Gorge. We stopped in Hood River for the annual Hood River Harvest Festival. It was a golden afternoon for shopping in the craft booths and who knows how many pounds of apples we bought? My favorite was Oregon's own Mountain Rose with a pale exterior and deep red flesh within. We then boarded the bus, headed west to dance with the Country Cutups at the Boring Barn. What a welcome we received! Thank you Cutups for a fun evening and the lavish buffet.
We wrapped up the month on October 25th was our annual Spooky Boogie Dance; black lights giving the skeletons a creepy glow.
December will be a busy month as we hold our New Dancer Jamboree on the 7th. We have an enthusiastic group of new dancers so please bring new and experienced dancers to join us.
Our Toyland Dance will be the 13th. Each year we enjoy the ballroom decorated for us by the Aloha Grange and collect donated toys for the holiday season.
Will the holidays leave you ready for a comfy clothes and comfort food? Then you must join us for our Pajama Party on December 27th. Flannels, footie's, or sweats, we don't care just join us for a cozy evening of dance and we'll be serving comfort foods at break.
It's been a busy and fruitful year for the Hoedowners. We've danced, partied, laughed and worked hard. We are thankful for the joys of friendship and look forward to 2015. Wishing you the joys of the season!

It's handy that Winona Grange has a barrel for us to fill and will see that all contributions will go to the intended destination.

Autumn is the Hush before winter. Here at R Square D we have been anything but hushed this month. We celebrated Fall with our 3-day Oktoberfest on the first weekend of the month. The club served 93 dancers a good old fashioned German dinner followed up by 12 squares of dancing to the enjoyable calling of Les Seeley and Tami Helms. We thank the River City Riders for the entertainment on Saturday, a good time was had by all. We appreciate all the hard work that Arlene Evanson has done for so many years to head up this event.
The second weekend of the month we continued to celebrate with a harvest dance with caller Craig Abercrombie.
Dance lessons started on the 15th with 13 new dancers, WOW ! Our monthly meeting was held at Ron and Lynn Waliezer's home with good conversation surrounding this dance we all enjoy.
December brings us a B-51 toy dance on the 12th and the 27th is our Christmas dance, Please join us.

The Club has decided to start a Thursday night Plus Dance since Norm Yoder has retired after starting and being the caller for his Plus Knights Club for 30 years. The Sunset Promenaders Club is going to call the dance Plus Promenaders and it will be on the 1st and 3rd Thursday each month with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Ken Pratt cueing Intermediate and Phase 2 Rounds. We invite all Plus Dancers to come and dance with us at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall, 267 E. Main St. The times will be 7:00 to 7:30 for Pre-Rounds and 7:30 until 9:30 Plus Dance with a potluck dessert break afterwards. Come, enjoy yourselves, and visit; nice hall with good wood floor and ample parking on the street or at the Premier Community Bank.
Our Mainstream dance is on 1st and 3rd Saturdays with Mike Stout and Ken Pratt as our club caller and cuer. In December we are having a guest caller Darrell Kalmbach calling while Mike is on vacation. December 6th is a regular Mainstream dance and December 20th is our Christmas Dance with all singing calls. The times for the dances are 7:00 to 7:30 Intermediate Pre-Rounds; Mainstream Dance from 8:00 to 10:00; with a potluck break afterwards. Please come and enjoy.

Bill and I missed our Howl'N'Along dance and German Dinner due to an emergency family visit to Idaho. But, we heard that the dinner, German sausage and sauerkraut, with all the trimmings was delicious. Some came in costumes, which included Red Riding Hood and Big Bad Wolf, a Nun and Frankenstein, a Pirate, and a witch. Some prizes were awarded for best and creative outfits.
On October 26th at Kinton Grange we had the annual Turkey Dinner. As usual the food and fellowship was outstanding. Thank you to all those who helped. The weather also cooperated by stopping the deluge of rain during the hours of the dinner. Thank you Lord.
Our December dances will both include a Tour of England with a Boxing Day dance on the 19th. This will also be our Toy Drive at both dances.
In January we will tour France with a Topsy Turvy theme on the 2nd.
Our Square and Round dance lessons begin on the first Sunday in January. See January ad for times.
We are continuing to audition cuers in our effort to replace Jackie. New cuers add a touch of excitement to the dance, as each one has special ways of making the dance moves new and fun. TriSquares dancers will enjoy that until a match is made.
We have 27 paid-up students learning their mainstream moves, and they look like they are having a good time. It's a sharp class, and they will be adding a lot to our Club activities in the future.
We're heading into the Holidays now, and our dance themes will be appropriate to that, but keep in mind that our annual Mardi Gras dance will be coming up in the early spring (I don't know! Are February and March Spring months, or are they still Winter months?), and you don't want to miss that!

Valley Squares went dark to celebrate Sunset Promenaders' Anniversary. Since Chuck was calling, it was a little like being at home. Ken Pratt cued. What a nice party the Promenaders hosted!
Three squares danced to Janet Shannon at our Harvest Dance as Chuck headed south to celebrate his mom's 80th birthday. Connie cued. Thanks to all the guests who support us and bring their energy to the floor. And a special thanks to Hoedowners for not gathering in the sheaves, but for sharing their wonderful decorations with us.
We continue to have fun while learning at our Mastering Mainstream/Beginning Plus lessons Tuesday nights.
Please join us at our dances December 6 & 20. Bring along some cans of food to nourish hungry tummies or toys for dreaming children.
Our Basics lessons begin January 16, 7 p.m., Aloha Grange. Please encourage friends and relatives to join us.

The Wave Steppers will be dark over the winter-but not too dark. The square dance class (students and angels) is still meeting Wednesday nights at the Tillamook Elks, though what we're mostly doing is practice and speeding up. (However, we won't be having class on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, or December 3, the night of the Master Gardeners annual dinner.) Round dance (waltz) classes with Connie Clark from Portland are on Sunday afternoons, 3 to 5 p.m. at the Rockaway Beach Community Center; those will continue through December, if the weather holds.
The 2015 square dance classes will start January 28, with veteran instructor Jim Hattrick conducting the first two lessons, then club caller Joe Wrabek for two lessons, then Hattrick again for two more, and then Joe again. As last year, the lessons are free-the Tillamook Elks are again letting us use their dance floor free of charge. The Wave Steppers' regular monthly dances will start again in the spring-again with the goal of having a whole new crew of square dancers able to take the floor by then.

The bats, ghosts and Happy Halloween banners were packed away by the first of November and the Club was in the swing of November festivities by the first dance in November. In honor of Veterans Day the Veteran's in the Club received a discounted price at one of our November dances and also a discount at lessons the night of November 11th.
Two plus squares participated in our Veteran's Day parade in Roseburg. Although it was cold, the sun was shining brightly and there wasn't a rain drop in sight so we all considered the parade a success. Neil Koozer donated the use of his pick up again this year and thanks to Doris the truck was decorated in style. We looked pretty spiffy strutting and dancing down Jackson Street.
Our annual Thanksgiving potluck and dance, which was held the 3rd Saturday in November, honored Don Marshall for his accomplishment of Calling for 25 years. We had six squares dancing to music from the 70's and 80's. We have been fortunate to have had Don calling for both our Buckeroo and Timber 8 Clubs for so many years. Hats off to Don for doing such a fabulous job and not giving up on us or packing up and leaving Douglas County for the bright lights of a big city to live.
The Buckeroos wish all of our Square Dance friends a holly jolly Christmas!
