Printed 20 July 2015
Editor's Note
Many clubs have gone dark for the summer. Please make sure that your club information
accurately reflects your dark dances. Also, summer goes by very quickly, and that's
followed by lessons starting up in the fall. September lessons will start showing
up in next month's OFN, so please double-check to make sure your lesson information
is up to date.
I have included an obituary for my father, Norm Roberts, who passed away suddenly
this past Monday. Norm & Karen started dancing in the Portland area in 1980 and
were active in several clubs over those three decades.
We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of
the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN.

Longtime Oregonian Norman Charles Roberts passed away on June 15, 2015.
Born in Portland February 25, 1936, he grew up in North Portland and
graduated from Jefferson High School in 1954. He married Karen Esther
Walden in July, 1958. They moved to NE Portland in October, 1959,
and stayed there 53 years until her passing.
Norm had a 45-year career as a warehouseman at Northern Specialty Sales.
He spent 16 years serving in the Oregon National Guard, and was a charter
member of the Gateway Elks Lodge. Norm and Karen bowled every week for
many years, and were active in many Oregon square dance clubs. They
were members of the Swingin' Archies, and were charter members of
Aces & Lace. They rarely missed a Mid-Winter Festival.
Norm is survived by a sister, Shirley Daves of Milwaukie; a brother,
Jerry Roberts, of Vancouver; two sons, Tim Roberts of Tigard, and Mark
Roberts of Clackamas; and four grandchildren, Andrea Adzima, Amanda
Roberts, Krista Roberts, and Jonathan Roberts.
Memorial service will be 1 PM Saturday, June 20, at Finley Sunset Hills
Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Dominican
Sisters of San Jose, at https://msjdominicans.org/SupportOurMission.

The Square and Round Dancers of Central Oregon met on the morning of June 7th to walk in a Heaven Can Wait 5K (one dancer ran the 5K). We all wore felt signs on our backs letting everyone, over a thousand participants, know that we represented square/round dancers. The event is organized by the Foundation of St. Charles Hospital of Bend. There were costumes, balloons, pink tutus, and tons of pink in the crowd. This event supports the Sara Fisher Project promoting Breast Cancer Awareness. Afterwards, we all remarked how rewarding and gratifying it felt to participate in the race and plan to walk/run again next year.
May and June definitely demonstrated that Bachelor Beauts are willing to pitch in when needed. Club members served as hosts for the state meeting, helped clean the Pine Forest Grange inside and out, and sold food at the Sisters rodeo. Boy, have we been busy! But, never too busy to dance!
In addition to our always fun first and third Saturday dances, we danced to gummy bears and pink cadillacs in a funky town when Denny Lantz called at the Central Oregon Council dance at the end of May. And even though the Knott Landfill facility (aka "the dump") was not in need of our services to help pick up trash on Saturday morning, we held our casual dress Dump Dance that evening.
June 20 will be our last chance to dance together for a bit because the club is dark in July.
The Swinging Mountaineers with help from many of the other Central Oregon dance clubs have just finished another successful Sisters Rodeo event. 50 dancers staffed two concession booths during this dusty, rowdy and super fun four-day event held the second weekend of June. This long-time fundraiser benefits all the clubs who participate.
Event chair Lonnie Waak explained that the Rodeo Association contracts with the Swinging Mountaineers to staff the booths, and in return the club receives 20% of the sales which is then split amongst the participating clubs based on the number of volunteers working. The amount of sales can vary widely from year to year with weather being a big factor. This year the warm weather had rodeo fans lining up to buy endless bottles of water in addition to juicy hot dogs, nachos, fries and Kobe burgers. Although the club won't know how much money was raised until later this summer, last year's share of sales totaled approximately $6,000--a giant help in covering a year of dance expenses.
Perks for dancers who work at the rodeo include free food during their shift and a chance to see some rodeo action during break time. A special perk for dancers working on the Saturday day shift was a surprise visit from the University of Oregon mascot Puddles the Duck who quacked up dancers and customers as he stepped inside the booths to offer hugs and take a few orders.
Lonnie and his wife Marilyn oversee the grilling and sales action at the west side concession booth, while Carol Bro supervises the east side. Lonnie encourages a little friendly competition between booths by awarding a travelling trophy to the booth generating the most tips during the rodeo (Tips of the monetary kind, not the dancing kind). The tips are important because the club uses the proceeds to pay a clean up crew to clean the booths, and any excess monies are kept by the club. At the time this article was submitted we are anxiously awaiting the announcement of this year's trophy winner. (This reporter predicts victory for the east side.)

July 20 (3rd Mon) Meeting

Our club dances the first and third Saturdays of each month except for July and one dance (third Saturday in May). We voted to continue with two dances a month although our numbers are down and having one dance a month was an option. Please come and dance with us the first and third Saturdays in August. We have a cushioned wood floor and air conditioning. Also, our summer dances are casual dress.
We are dark September 5th, as that is Labor Day weekend.
On May 9th, Single Trees and Whirl-A-Ways once again combined to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, which is on May 5th and we were late but we celebrated it anyway. Everyone had a great time. On May 22nd, Craig Abercrombie called and cued an excellent dance.
We look forward to Jim Voll's calling and Jackie Gale's cuing on July 10. It'll be our Red, White and Blue Dance. Lennie Ludiker and Christina Corelli are on tap to call and cue our July 24th Pie and Ice Cream Social.

Our caller, Tim Matteson, flew to St. Louis for the annual IAGSDC convention. There were 820 in attendance. this year. Tim learned a lot about figures, club development, websites, technology, etc. It was worthwhile. The largest club is now Puddletown in Seattle. Philadelphia won the vote for the convention in 2019. Denver is the only club in line to present a proposal next year for 2020. Other upcoming years are Toronto 2016, Palm Springs 2017, and Seattle 2018. All planned future conventions will be during the Fourth of July weekend. In addition to the delegates meeting Tim attended a club development meeting hosted by All Join Hands. Tim learned that a lot of dancers come from the fieldd of healthcare, education, and technology. Having a welcoming up to date website is also very important and something that could be worked on by most clubs. All Join Hands does have development funds available that we can consider requesting for future events. Tim had us doing the figures presented and worked on at the convention. He worked us hard, but it was FUN! Thanks Tim!
We look forward to our annual Pride Dance on August 22nd. National caller Kris Jensen will be calling. Kris is the sister of Kurt Jensen, one of our Spin Cycle Squares members. Kris does a superb job of calling and ensuring FUN for all dancers. We are also doing a demo dance at Eugene LGBT Pride on August 8th. Time to be determined later. Tim gets couples in one very large circle and teaches them several calls. It is a lot of fun.
Our current board all said 'yes' to running again for at least one more term. President: David Lajoie, President of Vice (VP) - Kurt Jensen, Secretary - Tim Matteson, Treasurer - Lorna Mercer and Member-at-Large - Christina Corelli. We thank all of these folks for being willing to run again. The entire slate was voted in Sunday at our general meeting.
Happy Dancing,
Christina Corelli

Braids and Braves danced on our trailer in the annual McMinnville Alien Days parade in May. We had great fun dancing and interacting with the many, many people in the parade crowd and the other costumed "aliens" in the parade. The downtown area was packed with onlookers who were spilling out off the sidewalks and onto the streets. Later, after the parade, we hosted an "out of this world" Alien dance of four squares and many guests for this fun dance. Special thanks to K.C. Curtis who was our guest caller for both events.
Two-step lessons are continuing with our cuer, Sandra Pinion. Our students are working hard and learning the steps very quickly. We are looking forward to seeing our new round dancers stepping out on the floor at our club dances very soon.
We held club election of officers at our April business meeting and will be installing the new officers at our June meeting. Jennie Ramer

We are just now getting back into the click of things and have been busy getting ready for the summer demos. We enjoyed a fun day at Agfest, clogging in the big building and the sound was great. Everyone came over and clapped as we danced. We are now getting ready for Art Festival and World Beat.
Our Cherry City Rhythm Rockers have been seen dancing all over. Their next demo is at Marion County Fair and there are some other fun demos on the calendar.
We have great instructors for our Cloghoppers seniors. They are looking good and some are even joining the last beginner’s class. The beginner’s class is quickly catching up with the intermediate class. Everyone is having fun. We are already having a new class dancer’s sheet. We have been getting excited for the new coming class in September. Double-toe Stomp Joanie

Corvallis Squares club is dark for July and August but we are happy to see there are a variety of summer dances up and down the valley. We look forward to attending some of these opportunities.
We are already planning for our fall lessons. We've found most students who attend our lessons have been personally invited by a club member. So that will be emphasized, along with flyers and other forms of publicity that we've used in the past. We hope to put on some demo dances, one at the Benton County Fair and one at Corvallis's Fall Festival and we will have lesson information available for interested people! Karen

We continued with Mambo until June 11. Then we have two more weeks before the big event of our 39th birthday and a retirement dance for Ray and Virginia Walz. We are planning a great time and two hours of dancing, reminiscing, and wishing them well as they take time for themselves in retirement.
We have a guest cuer, Christina Corelli, for the June 25 lesson date and Jeanine Norden will be with us for two weeks in July while Cheryl and Geof are gone.
On July 30, we will start about five to six weeks of Bolero workshops to work on those pesky steps that prevent us from making it through a complete dance. It should be a good review to end the summer season and to be ready for the new dance season in September.
We are starting new hours in June by starting at 6:30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. because not enough people are showing up to dance at 6 p.m. So we are hoping the later start will have more people in the hall at the new time to make it worthwhile to the cuer. Marilyn Schmit

We have had a busy last few months. Thanks to Nancy Donaldson, our new Vice President, for arranging visitations. 15 of us went to B & B’s on February 3, 20 dancers to IWW’s Leather & Lace Dance on February 14. 10 dancers visited Golden Squares on March 30. On April 24, we visited Single Trees in Springfield with 12 dancers. We planned a big visitation to Lebanon Square Circlers Strawberry Festival Dance on June 6. Hopefully, some of you planned on joining us for our Fourth of July BBQ on Friday July 3.
Our club dances all summer, every first and third Friday in our air conditioned hall. 7:00 pm pre-rounds, 7:30 pm plus, Mainstream with Rounds at 8:00 pm. July 31 is the 5th Friday and we will be having a Plus dance. Randy Dibble is our caller and Jeanine Norden is our cuer. See you on the dance floor. Sheila Machado

We are dark for the summer but we will be back dancing in September at our hall.
We had several of our youth and adults join the PAC at the Starlight Parade. That was a lot of fun.
A quick note: Mom got the scores from the Teen Festival. For the Junior Squares, there was only one point between the first place team and the Silver Dragons in second place. Petrina Buchheit
Another dance season has come to an end and Timber Twirlers will be dark until September. We had a great dance year and thank you to all that joined in the fun. Thank you also to the loyal club members that worked so hard to put on fun dances with fun themes. A Special Thank you to our caller Bruce Lowther and partner Judy Russell for all their hard work, and since I am not only the club reporter but the club cuer, I will pat myself on the back also.
We are looking for a new dance hall as the wonderful place we danced this year has decided to go in another direction, so we are again without a place to dance. If you know of a place in the Albany area, please feel free to let one of us know. You can find our contact info on the state website. Have a great summer ---Sandy
Valley River Dancers were the guests of the Toe Draggers on their annual mystery trip in June. The group danced on the steps of the Oregon State Capitol, entertained young women at Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility in Albany, and enjoyed the hospitality of the Lebanon Square Circlers at their annual Strawberry Festival potluck and dance. We thank both clubs for their gracious hospitality and generosity. We had a blast.
Speaking of festivals, our wildly popular Dance Under the Stars, part of the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival, is slated for Friday evening, July 24. You're invited to come early and enjoy the booths and entertainment, then join us for some skirt-twirling, bolo-bouncing fun. Please see our flyer for details.
Congratulations to the Silver City Squares for capturing the Mid-Willamette Valley banner from us. Many clubs in the council competed for the honor, and we accept your challenge to win it back!

The Willamette Squares dance the end of May took place Memorial Day weekend and honored our Veterans. Sandy Harris, our caller, and Jackie Gale, our cuer, did a wonderful job incorporating singing calls and cues that matched the occasion. One table was devoted to photos of the veterans among us, and at one point during the dance, all veterans were asked to come up front and be recognized for their service. Georgette Hagerman handed out double flag pins to each veteran present, shook their hands, and personally thanked each one of them on behalf of Willamette Squares and guests. As usual, the dancing and food were excellent, and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves. Jodee Howard

May 29th was one of our better attended council dances, in which we had a little over eight squares attend. Snacks are now a potluck affair, rather than the responsibility of any one club.
Our Starlite Parade entry also did well, with about three squares attending, most prominently by the Silver City Squares and their two affiliated youth auxiliaries: Silver Dragons and Silver Knights. More importantly, this appears to be the first time in several years that our entry has made a good showing. Danny and Carol seem to be making plans to organize it again next year.
What a great dance we had May 27th. – Jim Steele, of all people – a voice from the past. Even the Royal Romp officers turned out to see him! This is one of the advantages to having guest callers and cuers – a wide variety of talent.
Please remember that we are dark Jul 8th, while the grange refinishes our floor. I’m told it will be coated in something called “Satin Sandpaper Finish”, whatever that is. I’m just told it is non-slick, yet cleans and scrubs the soles of our dance shoes at the same time. I guess we won’t have to worry about sliding around on slick floors and falling on our derričrs? I’m also guessing we shouldn’t dance on it barefoot?
Other great dances will be our 4th of July dance on July 1st, and our Beach Party dance on July 22nd. Club Auditor, Buck Cashout, is getting ready to cash in on these dances! Remember, too much of a good thing is wonderful!

It’s been a couple months since the Chaps and Petticoats did a newsletter…time to catch up.
Our USO/Armed Forces dance on May 15, with Putzler calling and Ken Pratt as Cuer, was our best ever program! Our Marine, Sandy Shew organized the program to include the Marine Color Guard from Swan Island, a parade of flags, and the Silver Knights and Silver Dragons youth dancers, with Thomas Buchheit calling, showcasing their Canada dance competition squares - congrats on your awards earned!
As if that entertainment wasn’t enough; we also had a Silent Auction and donated $71.50 to the USO program that provides safe haven and entertainment to those who serve our country. SPECIAL THANKS to our VETERANS who honor us with your presence and completed our four squares of dancers.
Our “Lazy Days of Summer” dance on June 19, is our last dance before Chaps and Petticoats go dark for the summer. We want it to end with a bash and we have good talent: George Hermann, Caller and Molly Combs cues. Won’t you turn out and surprise us??
One-third of the dancers in our club will attend the K-Falls Summer Festival. For those who stay on the home-front, turn out and help us make our annual fundraiser, a food booth at the Hubbard Hop Festival on July 18th, a success! We serve Elephant Ears and specialty coffee. Come, make it a day in the park - bring your folding chairs to view the 10 AM morning parade, satisfy your appetites with a variety of cultural foods, and games (dunk-tank included) for the whole family. Would be a hoot to see you there! Oh, also night entertainment is offered in the “Beer Gardens” in Hubbard, at dark.
Thanks to the planning of Donna Krossman-Darling, we had a wonderful and unique Mystery Trip on May 9, 2015. We all met at a Chinese restaurant in Sandy and got our fill. From there, we traveled out of town to Dodge Park and danced in the grass, ate carrots, kept balloons in the air, and passed wiffle balls, all while dancing to the able calling of mobile caller Scott Zinser. We then moved on and ended up at Paula Zirkle’s horse barn. Don Forbes and Paula had set up several games to entertain us and we danced several tips there. We dived into teams of two and played such things as ping pong circulate where we tried to bounce ping pong balls into buckets for points. Of course, we had to pin the tail on the horse and play some horseshoes. We even go to run barrel races and shoot spud guns! Everyone had a wonderful time. The evening was topped off with some homemade ice cream and popcorn. Ron Rasmussen and Patti Smith won first prize as the team with the most points in the games.
We ended May with a fifth Saturday dance called by Scott Zinser and we all enjoyed strawberry shortcake. The first week in June brought our mainstream class to graduation. We had three students complete the class and are thankful for new members, Jeff and Carolyn. 10 year old Hannah added lots of smiles to our classes, and we hope to see her out dancing.

In July and August our club dance schedule goes "dark", allowing the Happy Hoppers to disperse to points unknown, spreading the joy. We'll start up again in September.
Our weekly square dance lessons are also on summer vacation. The Happy Hoppers work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for newcomers. Lessons will pick up again on Monday, September 21st.
The highpoint of the summer season, our annual club picnic will take place on Sunday, August 2, at Don and Joanne Oja's farm.
‘Come dance the evening away as we celebrate our nation’s birthday!’ The first Saturday of July is the 4th and it is our Independence Day Dance. We’ve begun our summer schedule with Intermediate Rounds from 7:00-7:20, a workshop 7:20-7:40 (Rounds on the 1st Saturday and Squares on the 3rd Saturday), Easy Rounds from 7:40-8:00 and Main Stream from 8:00-11:00. K.C. Curtis will be calling and Helen Halley will be cueing. Mark Wheeler is calling and Molly Combs is cueing for our third Saturday dance.
Our heartfelt gratitude to the callers and cuers who have helped us out during Mike’s surgery and recovery, A BIG THANK YOU to each of you for your good thoughts and prayers.
A ‘heads up’ for our August 1st dance – ‘The Big Birthday Bash’ at which time we will be featuring “Special Milestones – those significant birthdays and anniversaries of 2015’. Remember -- anyone who has a birthday in 2015 is welcome!
With temperatures already in the 90’s we are happy our Hall is air conditioned. Join us for a dance or two in comfort.

We have cancelled our third Saturday dance on July 18 to attend Summer Festival in Klamath Falls.
Our main focus the last few months has been to raise funds to cover the expense of replacing the roof on our hall. A presentation by Eric Foxman, a garage sale and most recently a concert by Ted Vigil have been very successful. Ted will perform June 28, so it may not be too late to buy your tickets. See the flyer in the June edition of the OFN for more information. If you were a fan of John Denver, you are in for a real treat. He looks like him and sings the same songs.
Our annual campout is later this month in Cougar, Washington. We will camp, hike, play games, and, of course, eat and square and round dance. It is always a fund weekend.

More prosaically: Our next club dance will take place Saturday, August 1, at the Ankeny Street Studio, 975 SE Sandy Blvd., Portland, Oregon. We will serve ice cream from 6:30 to 7:30; offer a free introduction to square dancing from 7:30 to 8:30; and then dance Mainstream and Plus tips from 8:30 to 9:30. Gary Monday (Seattle) will be calling. All are welcome—including solos, couples, families, and new and experienced dancers. Find more information on our website: www.rosetownramblers.com.
The Silver Stars will be dark the months of July and August while we dance at other clubs, at the many weekend events around the Pacific Northwest, as well as the Washington and Oregon State Festivals. We wish our club members as well as our dancing friends safe travels. We have some social activities planned and look forward to the new dance year beginning in September. Hugs and yellow rocks to all.
Goodness, where did May and June go? Well, on to July! Let’s see what kind of fun we can get into. I know a lot of you will be going to Summer Festival, but don’t have an account of as to how many.
But just a reminder, the Tumbleweeds do not go dark in the summer, except for July 3rd and 17th. We will go dark so members can be with their families and friends on the 4th, and the hall was previously rented to somebody else on the 17th; otherwise, you can find us dancing every Friday 11 – 2 in our air conditioned hall. Why not come have lunch with us? We always look forward to our visitors.
We will have our annual picnic July 11th and will celebrate our 43rd anniversary. It will be in Stringfield Park, Milwaukie, 10 – 3pm.
Port Orford Beachcombers are gearing up for our annual Battle Rock Festival held over Labor Day Weekend. We always have a lot of fun activities planned for this time and hope you all make plans to come down to the beautiful southern Oregon coast and join us for a weekend of dancing fun and fellowship. The weather is always great at that time of year!
Well, time got away from me last month so I did not get a report written for the OFN. Now to play catch up!
The birthday dance in May was well attended. Thanks go out to Dale Roberson who filled in for Sherm while he was out of town. We always enjoy his calling. We had several visitors from Roseburg – thank you!
Our Cinco de Mayo Live Band dance was a big success. We even had visitors from Portland!
Thanks to all of you who came and enjoyed the dancing and great food! Sherm really likes calling with a live band!
Our 5th Saturday Area Dance was held in Coquille (Sets-in-Order) on May 30 with Coleeta Quigley calling and Denise Harris cuing and a fun evening was had by all who attended.
Several Saints-n-Aints attended the Coquille Gay 90’s Day parade and danced on the float with Sets-in-Order then came back to Coos Bay and danced the night away with their own club. What stamina!
With regards to our July dances – we will be DARK on the 4th but we will dance on the 3rd Saturday so if you are unable to attend Summer Fest maybe you could join us.
July and August dances will be casual dress. Come on over and enjoy the beautiful Oregon Coast! And our caller, Sherm, is taking the summer off so we will have guest callers for those months.
Happy Dancing!

Tualatin Valley Council
The Tualatin Valley Council has grown from ten member clubs to eleven! The Columbia River Dancers are now members of the TVC. This club was formed in September of 2014 and had their first dance without a name! Dancers submitted 46 names, 9 rose to the top, and one was chosen on OCT 14th - Columbia River Dancers! Dancing at the Vancouver YMCA on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, they are a family, single/solo, couple friendly club. Their caller/cuer is Richard Lane (Leslye), one of our local callers with a national pedigree.
On May 30th the TVC hosted a Spring Fling dance at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro, in tribute to Jim Hattrick who is experiencing health issues. There were 11 squares of dancers in attendance with 13 callers and cuers! Our MC's Daryl Clendenin and Tami Helms were assisted by Mike and Julie Stout, Tim Keck, Ken Pratt, Julie Stiers, George Clark, Joyce Hooper, Connie Clark, KC Curtis, and Darrell Kalmbach. We all had a wonderful time. The Sunset Promenaders claimed the TVC banner by having 47% of their club present, edging out the Hoedowners with 41%.

May is the month for celebrating Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, horse races, and car races by remembering family, friends, and the people who serve and keep us safe. We thanked our Vets at our Memorial Day Dance. All of this good weather gave us beautiful flowers to enjoy in our celebrations.
After putting up with the idiosyncrasies of the Eager Beavers for MANY years, George Clark has announced he is retiring the end of September as our caller. I think George and Nancy are looking forward to a well deserved rest and time to take a real vacation. We all wish them the best and look forward to seeing them often as honorees at future dances.
Do not forget we invite other dancers to our annual beach trip September 16 - 18 in Garibaldi. Square dancers have special rates at the Garibaldi Inn. We have activities planned and there will be plenty of food. We do like to eat. For more information on activities and space call Nan at 503-291-1966.
Members, please sign up to bring a dish to the annual picnic August 13. I was sweetly asked to bring chocolate chip cookies. It is so nice to be appreciated.
All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, Rounds 1:00 - 1:30; Plus 1:30 - 3:15 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Portland. This hall is air-conditioned which makes dancing a pleasure during the summer. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info.

May 9th was our Mother’s Day Dance. It was a lovely evening and I spotted a few Mother’s aprons dancing on the floor. We dined on pie, from the traditional to the nouveau recipes we’ve all garnered from the internet and TV. Does anyone remember playing the game “Mother May I?” Well no one was playing or asking permission, in fact you were encouraged, to take multiple pieces of pie and to taste everything.
On May 13th, ten intrepid Hoedowners met for an evening of wine and paint. Yes, we did mix the two during the evening; beverages in a glass while the paint was blended on a plate. We will never look at hummingbirds and hibiscus the same. What a fun party; great company, lots of laughs and we learned a thing or two about painting with acrylics. Every canvas was a work of art, no two the same!
The 23rd was our annual Red, White and Blue Dance. Bart and Debra Welch and Mike and Sally Duyck had the Aloha Grange looking spectacular! It was festive and patriotic, stripes and stars. I hope you had a chance to join the crowd.
In July we’ll be swaying to tropical breezes on the 11th for our Hawaiian Luau Dance. Breakout your surf shorts, grass skirts, shells and leis. Which type of lei do you prefer; tuberose, plumeria, ginger or pikake? I’m a pikake girl myself. Did you know that all but the plumeria are possible to grow here with extra attention?
And on July 25th we’re forgetting the yard work, laying back, relaxing and drinking at our Root Beer Float Dance. Please join us.
The word got out. Everyone came to our May dances in casual attire. By the time that you read this, it will be July and casual dress will be the standard anyway. While we will go dark July 4, we will welcome you to our annual root beer float dance July 18.
The new restrooms should be ready by the middle June, so check them out, when you show up for the floats and some great dancing.

April Showers bring May flowers and what a beautiful Spring we’ve had here in the Pacific Northwest.
R Square D celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a Fiesta de Mayo dance on May 8th, lots of traditional Mexican foods and some spicy dancing going on. The club then went dark for the Memorial Day weekend.
We at R Square D are proud of all the new dancers and will honor them with a graduation celebration on the 27th.
We start our summer schedule of having our dances on Wednesdays the first week in June. Dances will be on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. July 8th is our Freedom Dance and on the 22nd we will have a Denim dance, please come and join us.
A big Thank you goes out to Holly Pennock for all her hard work creating and maintaining our Facebook page.

Recently the Sunset Promenaders visited the R Square D in Kelso at their Cinco de Mayo Dance and had a great time. Craig Abercrombie called and cued a great dance and the dancers were a friendly bunch. We also visited the Hoedowners with Daryl and Yvonne calling and cueing; we always have a good time with them, and we got our banner back.
Thursday, July 2nd, is our Promenaders Plus Dance with Darrell Kalmbach Calling and Ken Pratt Cueing. This dance is a fun time for Plus dancers with some tricky calling and a little teach here and there. Darrell is very good at watching the floor and catching those little errors you make and helping you with it; he is a joy to dance to.
We are looking forward to our Independence Day Dance on July 4th; and we are having root beer floats at the break, but first we will be dancing to Mike Stout’s Calling and Ken Pratt’s Cueing in our air-conditioned hall; so come on over and help us celebrate.
We have a mystery trip planned for Saturday, July 11th, with both the Valley Squares and the Sunset Promenaders; last year was a great time together.
Thursday, July 16th, we have a Promenaders Plus dance; you Plus dancers come and dance with us.
July 18th the Sunset Promenaders are going to be dark in support of the Summer Festival in Klamath Falls.

Dancing in the rainforest in Madagascar has been something to experience. We sure do appreciate the folks who decorate for us and turn the Kinton Grange into magical adventures. Their work has made dancing within our themes more fun. We had visitations from many clubs in May and June and enjoyed their friendships set to music.
We are getting closer to our final stop to Japan in Aug. but had to come back to the USA for July and our celebration of America’s birthday along with KC’s on July 3rd. We are celebrating with BBQ hotdogs and hamburgers before the dance. Hope you’ll come and join us. BBQ before the dance starts at 6:30 p.m.
We will be having a dance the night of July 17th for any folks that might not be able to make it to Summer Festival. We will have a guest caller and our own Bev Flint cueing.
In Aug. we are finishing our year’s travels with a side trip to Japan and celebrating the Japanese Festival of Aki. We have had a great tour around the world, thanks to Amanda Roberts our Vice President. It’s been a great year dancing and meeting new friends and reconnecting with friends we haven’t seen for a while.

We are very excited to announce that we have a new club cuer Sandra Pinion. Sandra brings a vibrant and exciting energy to the dances. Thank you for accepting to be a part of Tri-Squares.
On May 16th we had our annual mystery trip. Our journey started with groups leaving at individual times. We made a total of four stops which included a golf course, a ferry ride, a historical center and a stop for dinner. Terry Halley, our club caller surprised us with square dancing in Canby Park. We danced under a gazebo! Our mystery trip ended up at the Country Cut-Ups in Boring, Oregon. We had a fun filled time and there were five squares. A big thank you to Gloria and Bob Davis for a great time!
We will be having one dance during the month of July due to the holiday. Please join us for our Old McDonald's Berry Bonanza Dance on the 17th. Our dance will start at 7:30 PM with 15 minutes of pre-rounds and 15 minutes of plus. At 8PM we will start mainstream with every fourth tip plus. We will end the dance with light refreshments.

Want to dance off some of those picnic and barbecue calories before the fireworks start? Join us for our 4th of July Dance at Aloha Grange. We will be dark July 18 for Summerfest.
Nine enthusiastic students graduated from mainstream. We celebrated with a couple of crazy dances - paper plate shuffles and balloons between the knees, as well as cake and ice cream. Our students got a chance to practice their moves at our June Mainstream Workshop.
Our Jamboree was well attended and the new TVC and PAC dancers found great deals at our Clothing Resale.
Ian Craig filled in for Chuck at our May Flowers Dance. We enjoyed a visitation from Rosetown Ramblers at our Shades of Blue Dance.
During our Semi-Annual meeting at the Spaghetti Factory, we filled positions created by our president's resignation. The new Valley Squares president is Sharon Tefelske and VP is Patt Hawthorne.

One change in the Wave Steppers’ 2015 dance schedule—the club’s September 12 dance will be called by Darrell Kalmbach, with line dance coach Gwen Kiel. September is the club’s anniversary; according to old (and sometimes sketchy) records, there’s been a square dance club in Garibaldi going back to the early 1900s.
Our July 11th dance will feature George Clark calling and cueing. This dance will have a patriotic theme so come dressed in your finest red, white, and blue.
The Wave Steppers’ square dance classes, taught by club caller Joe Wrabek, continue every Wednesday evening at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook. The classes are free.
All the club’s dances are held the second Saturday of the month, on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 6th St. (one block off US 101). The Garibaldi Inn and Suites, located half a block away, offers discounts for dancers spending the night. Please visit our webpage for up to date information, www.wavesteppers.org.

We began the month of May with our Mexican Fiesta celebrating Dos de Mayo. The May 16th dance found many of our dancers sporting red, white and blue as we recognized our Armed Forces. So that our members can attend the Summer Festival and the Diamond Lake Festival the Buckeroos will be going dark both of our July dances.
The annual elections were held the first Saturday in May and the following officers were elected:
President -Doris Koozer, Vice President-Ray Blessing, Treasurer-Robert Reynolds, and Secretary-David Harman. Three new Chairperson Heads were appointed as well and we welcome them to the Board. Mary Upthagrove will be taking over the Special Dances, Bruce and Laura Knotts together will serve as the Membership chairperson, Jim Irwin will serve as the Lesson Coordinator and Robin Faltersack will be helping with Publicity. A round of congrats and thank you’s go out to our Buckeroo Board who volunteer so much time to make the club run smoothly. August will be here soon and we hope to see you in your square dance attire on the dance floor with us at the Douglas County Fair.
