Oregon Federation News
October 2015

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 October 2015
Editor's Note

You may not realize it, but this issue actually represents the end of the first year of the online OFN -- my twelfth issue.

So far, things have gone quite smoothly. The council delegates are feeding me news items, the club representatives are updating their dance flyers and schedules and their class schedules, I'm getting some articles every month, and we're getting a supply of advertising.

I have had very occasional feedback from readers, most of it positive, some of it critical, but I'd like to hear more. As we bring this first year to a close, let me know what you think. For example:

I'm looking forward to your comments.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Federation Events

The September Federation meeting was held at the Milwaukie Community Center the weekend of September 19 and 20. The PAC and the River City Dancers hosted special dance to welcome the outgoing and incoming Federation officers.

The Federation installed Kay Rogers as President for the 2015-16 square dance year, with Marilyn Schmit as First Vice President, Chuck Garner as Second Vice President, Lorrie McIntosh as Secretary, Lane Clem as Treasurer, and Sylvia Davis as Membership Chairman.

Now is the time to purchase your Mid-Winter Festival ribbon. Ribbon packets have been given out to members who will be glad to sell you a ribbon, or you can get a registration form at www.midwinterfestival.com/.

We are really looking forward to square dancing to the calling of Matt Worley as well as our wonderful Oregon callers. Steve & Irene Bradt will be the cuers for this festival and Andy Howard is the clogging instructor. Seminars, after parties, youth programs, workshops, the sewing clinic, and meetings are being planned. Program books are being prepared. Every one is working to make this a fun festival.

There will be a vendors hall for shopping. If you are looking for a bargain in square dance attire the Resale Clothing is located in the Santiam Building.

See you in Albany on January 29-31, 2016.

Oregon's 2016 Summer Festival will be held at the Seaside Convention Center, July 29 to 31, 2016. You may download your registration form right here. Seaside hotels fill up quickly in the summer, so get your reservations in early.

On September 14th, Sundown Round Dance Club of Bend had their 2nd annual "Back to UR School" Dance. It's our opportunity to give back to the Community and donate School Supplies to the local School Children. and donate they did! The Dancers truly gave from their hearts. They donated everything from Pens & Pencils, notebooks, backpacks, and even the fancy crayon boxes, with the sharpener in the back, they donated everything that a child would need for school. Carol Bro & Mark McDonald cued a great dance for us. I would just to say Thank you all so much for your kindness and generosity in making this a huge success. You have made a difference in someone's life because of your kindness. You created a smile on a Child's face and mine too!

Summer draws to a close with a bit of chill in the air; even a touch of rain. Much too soon for that nonsense!

We continue to be delighted with the good news regarding Jim Hattrick's recovery. It will be wonderful to dance to his calling again.

We look forward to our October dances. Richard Lane and Jackie Gale are scheduled for October 9th. Our Halloween Dance, October 23rd, will feature Scott Zinser and Jackie Gale. Costumes are encouraged.

Fall is upon us! Lots of leaves and branches came down in that storm. Unfortunately, it also drowned out our club camp-out at Flying M Ranch. Better luck next year!

We had two squares of dancers for our Demo at Yamhill Valley Heritage Center in August, including several from other clubs. There were lots of spectators, including some huge tractors. We even had someone brave enough to join us for a tip! Square Dancing is easy to learn and SO much fun! We also had nearly three squares at our dance later in the evening.

We started offering Square Dance classes at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center (a fascinating place to visit, by the way) on September 10. Waltz classes are also available. See you in a square somewhere. Carmen

Our first dance of the season was a great success. We did a "Poker Dance". Everyone enjoyed the dance and earned prizes for the best poker hand. We had four squares in attendance and three squares dancing the poker tip.

Our second dance of the season on September 12 is planned as a "SOCK HOP". We will be dancing in a soda fountain theme with popcorn popping, root beer floats, and all singing calls. George Hermann will be calling and Ralph Lambert will be cueing.

We also as a club are now listed on the "Where's T Dance website. So go to wheresthedance.com and see what the IWW is doing and when. Also look at September's OFN for the flyer about our "Sock Hop". Sandy Eddings

It is Labor Day as I write this and our club will start Waltz lessons on September 10 with reviewing steps and movements. Not necessarily from the beginning, but steps that we have problems with in completing an entire dance. We finished our Bolero workshops and put some names to movements that we were unsure of.

October will see us hosting a Halloween Round Dance party night on the 29th. Two hours of just dancing and having fun with guests and songs that are somewhat related to the holiday. Come see us from 7-9 p.m. that night with or without a costume and dance your shoes off.

We will also start planning our New Year’s Eve dance by putting ideas on paper and getting some advertising out and around. Look for something soon and print it and put it up on your bulletin board to help us have a good crowd. Marilyn Schmit

September was a great month with lots of dancing! Our first Friday dance was well attended with Chuck Garner calling and Jeanine Norden cueing. September 18 was our Annual Corn N Cluck dance. The Chicken put in an appearance to everyone's delight. A big thank you to all of the Stars for their help with the food and decorations. Mainstream Lessons started on September 9 with a big turnout. Thanks to all of you Angels out there!

We dance the first and third Fridays of the month in October. Our Fifth Friday Plus (October 30) dance will be a Spooktackular Halloween Dance. Look for the flyer for additional information. Our caller is Randy Dibble and cuer Jeanine Norden.

Timber Twirlers started lessons in Sept so will let you know how we did in the next edition.

I was interviewed by the local paper about our search for a new dance venue and they did a very nice write up. We still do not have a new home so we will be dancing at the IOOF hall, 738 SE 5th, Albany again. Our Pirate dance will be Oct 2, which is always a great dance.

We recently lost a dear member of our group, Bob Cox. He has not danced with us for several years but he and his late wife were some of the founding members of the Timber Twirlers and he danced with us into his 80's. He will be greatly missed. Sandy

On September 1 Valley River Dancers proudly graduated five A1-A2 dancers. Speaking of September -- it's time to usher in the fall, cooler weather, and students going back to school, especially square dance school with VRD. Caller Randy Dibble just started a mainstream class for new dancers and a new Advanced class for masochistic experienced dancers! It's not too late to join.

Just what the doctor ordered to cope with shorter, cooler days: our September 25 sock hop and Fifth Saturday Advanced Dance on Halloween. (Note: Advanced dance is at Senior Estates Auditorium in Woodburn). And a special welcome back to Judy Zimmerman, who was in our hearts but not at our dances over the summer. Perrin Damon

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares had a nice turnout for their watermelon dance. There was plenty of ripe, juicy watermelon for refreshments and as usual, everyone had a great time dancing. Unfortunately the time and place were not conducive to a watermelon seed spitting contest. We'll have to postpone that activity until next summer's annual picnic outdoors.

Willamette Squares has been working on revitalizing our club. Our most recent meeting was hosted by Shari. We are focusing on getting more exposure in the community by articles in the Statesman Journal, as well as posting and handing out flyers, postcards, and business cards. A few car door magnets are on order so that wherever we go in our cars, there will always be a notice for square dancing. We now have a facebook page and will soon have our own website. We are making an effort to get the word out about square dance lessons that begin toward the end of September.

We are excited to be hosting the upcoming induction ceremony of our own Georgette Hagerman as the new president of the Mid-Willamette Area Council on September 21 at the Salem Square Dance Center beginning at 7:00 PM. We hope to see a large crowd of supporters to share in this momentous occasion.

Members of Willamette Squares have been putting the final touches on their summer travels. John camped at Mt. Rainier, Gary and Nancy have taken many excursions across the country, and Nancy and Brice were recently in Washington state.

With Oktoberfest just around the corner, we are looking forward to our next dance with the very fitting theme, Oktoberfest. Come ready to put your best foot forward. Ed will undoubtedly be requesting the polka. If you have lederhosen and dirndls, wear them, and whet your appetite for some fresh Oktoberfest sausage. Jodee Howard

Aug 12 was our “Welcome Back Jim Hattrick Dance”, the first dance he’s called in exactly nine months. Our scoreboard director, Goldie Goalie commented that Jim beat out Mike Sikorsky 104 to 101 dancers, making Jim Hattrick our biggest draw of the year to date! Both dances kept our parking patrol attendant Bruno Bruiser busy all night. (No, you can’t just park just anywhere.)

In an unusual move, the B&B’s offered long-time member Jerry Addington a permanent paid position, setting up our kitchen and dining area. We talked about having a paid position for years, but waffled on it. Finally, we did it! Of course, he’ll have other unpaid help to boss around, like Brent Burntwell doing the cooking, and sous chef Sue on the salads. Honestly, we have some pretty good food.

Greetings from the Buzzin Bees! I just came from a planning meeting and I am excited for the new year. We had a good summer and I was so pleased to see Elmer Toops. He is looking better than I have seen him in years thanks to the kidney transplant he had this summer. Come to a dance and see for yourself.

We will be having a change in callers in October when we welcome K.C. Curtis and his wife Linda to the Buzzin Bees. We will have great dances with Debbie Combs cueing and K.C. Calling. Hope you can join us.

By the time you read this we will have started lessons. We are hoping for a large class. Sunday nights at 6pm starting 9/20/15.

See you in a square.

Country Cut-Ups - Link
Fall leaves, a chill in the air, and hot pancakes mark the arrival of autumn. Some of you are thinking, “How did hot pancakes get it that list?” If you are a Country Cut-Up, it makes perfect sense. October brings our annual Pancake Breakfast fund raiser. Sunday, October 18, there will be hot pancakes, eggs, ham, coffee, and juice for sale at the Boring Barn. Dancers will turn into cooks, servers, and clean up crew. There will be a gift bazaar as well. We hope many of you can join us. It is the same weekend as the Seaside Sashay this year, but since there is no dancing on Sunday, you can all sashay your was back to Boring before we close at 1:00 PM.

Fall is also the time when we hold new dancer mainstream lessons. Ours will already be underway, and October 1st will be the last open lesson for newcomers to join us. Lessons are taught by Scott Zinser at the Boring Barn at 7:30 to 9:30 each Thursday evening. Scott is a very good teacher, so if you know dancers who have been through lessons, but are struggling, this is a great place for a review and we can always use angels.

October brings us another fifth Saturday dance that falls on Halloween. So if you are looking for a hot Halloween Party, come to the barn, in your best costume or dance clothes. The food is always good and we are a friendly crowd. Dancing starts at 7:00 PM with some plus, and mainstream starts at 7:30 with intermediate rounds mixed in. You can pass out candy to the neighborhood goblins, then head over to burn off some calories from all that candy you sampled! “The more you dance, the better you feel!”

Happy Hoppers - Link
This month, the Happy Hoppers have good news, and we have bad news.

We note, with sadness, the passing of our member Phillip Gilzow on August 17, at the age of 73. Phil had been wrestling with heart issues for several months, but appeared to be on the rebound. He and Ilona attended our club picnic on August 2. He was looking forward to getting strong enough to dance again, and seemed to be on track for that. Our sympathies go out to Ilona and the rest of Phil's family. We'll miss Phil's smiling face.

Now, for the GOOD NEWS: Our club caller, Jim Hattrick, is back in the saddle again after a 10 month absence. He's back to getting his nutrition the old-fashioned way, and he's looking good!

Jim will preside over our lessons on Monday nights and our club dances. Not knowing when he would be able to return, we had contracted with other callers and cuers for some future dates. For those dances, there will be an abundance of talent as Jim joins the others.

As always, we have Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00. Caller Darrell Kalmbach and cuer Dorothy Lowder will be joined by Jim Hattrick for a regular dance on October 3. On October 17 we will have our Johnny Appleseed / Harvest Days Dance (think "Apple Treats" at break time) with Jim calling and cueing.

The Happy Hoppers work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. We encourage beginning dancers to start introductory lessons on the first Monday of every month at 7:30. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00.

Many of our lesson students have risen to the Mainstream level only to be recruited by other clubs before they have had a chance to become Plus dancers and join the Hoppers. We are committed to remain a Plus club, but we also want to keep our students in the family. In an effort to provide our Mainstream students with some Happy Hopper floor time, on December 5, we will have a "Mainstream Splurge" dance. The format for this dance will be Plus tips from 7:00 to 8:00, and Mainstream tips from 8:00 to 10:30.

River City Dancers - Link
Some might call it a miracle; but I suspect it happens within square dance groups all over the country, maybe the world. The afternoon of Saturday, September 22nd, as I looked around our River City Dancer picnic at Bert Labedz’ magnificent Creekside property, I didn’t see a single person with their eyes glued to a mobile phone or other device. Everyone was talking, eating, laughing, later playing games and joining in a couple of tips or rounds under the direction of our esteemed caller, Les Seeley. They were actually interacting with each other, like folks used to do. Thanks to Bert and her family, as well as our River City Family, for a wonderful time, in spite of the smoke and heat. What better way to spend an otherwise miserable day?

I hear that River City Riders (RCR’s) did us all proud at the USA West Convention in Helena, Montana. Thanks, “Horses” for your continued hard work, dedication, and fun!

As I write this in the middle of September, I think about new beginnings. For many of us, some September past marked our own introduction to square dancing. River City Dancers are hoping our own classes, which begin Sunday evening, September 13, will be successful. For myself, there has never been a more life-changing activity. I look back to when my husband Leonard, and myself were taught by Jim Hattrick sometime around 1974 of 1975. Their twin boys were “in the oven” at the time, so Hattricks would be able to give me a more exact date. Square dancing and my fellow dancers have become a wonderful, positive part of my life, and I hope to continue as long as possible. Since losing Leonard to cancer back in spring of 2012, I was lucky to find Rocky Curtis, who has found square dancing as positive an activity as I have. You know Rocky “rocks” when he dances to a song that he especially likes.

We look forward to a busy October, foremost, of course, with our hopefully successful beginnings of lessons. Then there’s our “official” Saturday night visitation to R Square D’s of Longview the first weekend of October (thanks to our visitation “chair couple”, Carol Mendenhall and Gene Meyer). We end the month with our beach trip to the Landmark Inn at Lincoln City, and for a few of us willing to “play hooky” from our own third Saturday dance, the Seaside Sashay, the weekend before.

Hope to see you-all in a square soon!

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
With a definite sense of fall in the air, the Ramblers are turning our attention to our annual 3-day dance festival, which we call Scares and Squares due to its proximity to Halloween. This year’s festival will take place October 23-25 at the Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capital Highway, Portland, Oregon 97219. This facility is right in the heart of Multnomah Village and has ample parking.

This full weekend of dancing starts on Friday night with a trail-in dance starting at 7 pm. We dance all day Saturday, with a hosted buffet dinner, and then dance into the night—usually with a Halloween costume contest. We conclude with a brunch on Sunday morning, and dancing until 2 pm.

We have three top-notch callers joining us this year: Mike DeSisto (with his legendary high-energy calling style), Chris Phillips (who has called all over the US, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany), and Gary Monday (who is one of the most-popular callers at our monthly dances). We offer dancing for all levels from novices to experts, with sessions for class-level Mainstream, full Mainstream, Plus, Advanced, and C1.

Historically, we have welcomed dancers from all over the United States, as well as Canada and Europe, for this extravaganza of good dancing, good friends, and good cheer. We would love to see you for part or all of the weekend—we warmly welcome singles, couples, and families. Casual dress all weekend. You can find more information here: http://www.rosetownramblers.com/SNS2015/. (Note: if you can’t come for the whole weekend, we offer separate session pricing. These prices will be posted on our website.)

Beachcombers hosted another successful Battle Rock Festival over Labor Day Weekend. Dancers came from as far north as Portland, east from Central Oregon, Medford and as far south as Sacramento California. The weekend was packed with activities such as surf dancing, a demo in town, apple cider pressing, pie making, ice cream making and of course lots of visiting and catching up by old friends.

We are looking forward to the possibility of having square dance lessons this year. Ray Graves has agreed to be our teacher, so we have flooded the town nearby with flyers, and we have talked to people wherever we go about the benefits of square dancing.

We continue to dance on the 4th Saturday of each month from 3-6 pm, and always welcome visitors!

Although the weather did not cooperate with us, the Hahn Barn Dance was a rousing success. We moved the potluck picnic into the barn and had lots of room when some of the dancers found additional seating in the adjoining storage buildings. We had 12 squares attending including a visiting couple from Tempe Arizona. Thanks goes to Daryl and Yvonne Clendenin for their great calling and cueing. The Sunset Promenaders had the highest percentage of their club in attendance with just over 3 squares to claim the TVC Banner. This makes two in a row for them! Since the Hoedowners were a very close second, the Promenaders presented the award to them.

The next TVC event will be the Tri-Council Dance on Halloween night. This fifth Saturday dance will be held at the Clark County Square Dance Center in Vancouver Washington and will be hosted by the Portland Area Council (PAC). The featured caller will be Darrell Kalmbach with Molly Combs cueing. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

We were blessed with many visitors and lots of squares over the summer. We were dark on 8/8 as several club members attended USA West where we met some wonderful new friends from Montana and neighboring states.

In early August, our caller quit and at the same time we lost our “.com” web address and Facebook page. Therefore, our web address has changed and we've re-built our Facebook page. Despite these circumstances, we were overwhelmed by the support shown by our friends at our 8/22 dance, called by Mike Stout and cued by Julie Stout. In fact we ended up with almost 7 squares! The Toe Draggers visited us and some visitors came from as far as Hood River and Cougar.

While we search for a new club caller, we look forward to an exciting lineup of guest callers/cuers, including Jim Hattrick, who will be calling our 9/12 and 11/28 dances. Please check our web site and new Facebook site for updates regarding callers/cuers for upcoming dances:

www.ColumbiaRiverDancers.org or www.ColumbiaRiverDancers.club>/a>, and

www.facebook.com/ColumbiaRiverDancers. (Please “like” us!)

Our lessons will start in September. They will be taught by Mark Wheeler and Jim Hattrick as a team. We plan to follow the same lesson cycle as the Hoppers and hope this will add an element of flexibility to Vancouver square dance lessons, making it easier for students to double up on lessons and/or make up lessons they've missed.

Eager Beavers - Link
Our long time caller, George Clark, is retiring from full time calling October 1 and will be missed by many. The Eager Beavers will then have multiple callers. Jim Hattrick is recovering and will take the 3rd Monday as in the past. Daryl Clendenin and Daryl Kalmbach will call the other Mondays. See our site for current schedule. This will be a big change for a long established club such as ours but we are looking forward to the mental stimulation of learning different ways of square dancing.

I have observed that Eager Beavers always enjoy eating good food, talking, and games in that order. That is exactly what made our picnic in Noble Woods a pleasant afternoon for thirty or so. It was a little warm and the bees liked the smell of our food but it was all good. Dancing on the grass was not a good idea.

Our visitation to the Sunset Promenader’s Anniversary Dance October 3rd promises to be a blast. It is a dinner dance and the caller is Dan Preedy. See Nan or Karen for tickets. Do not miss this one.

Flag Day is the 12th, a good day to show off your patriotic colors. Then come to our Halloween Dance dressed in your favorite costume (or not) October 26th.

All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, Rounds 1:00 - 1:30; Plus 1:30 - 3:15 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. This hall is air-conditioned which makes dancing a pleasure during the summer. August 2015 was so busy for the Hoedowners that I’m surprised anyone had time to take a vacation. The 8th was our annual Knobby Knees Dance. A cool dance on a hot knight, oops, make that night. Did you know that the Scots are the only ones to still pronounce both the K and the N? Thanks to guest caller Darrel Kalmbach and guest cuer Randy Lewis for making the dance a special success. The ice cream sundaes were much appreciated.

On August 22 we held our most aptly name dance of the year, our Annual Hot August Nights. This year August was filled with hot nights and I enjoyed every one. Thank you to the Valley River Dancers for joining us on the dance floor and capturing a banner. What great guests and a fun group. Michael Kious joined Daryl on the stage and called a tip for us.

On the 27th we had our first Annual Hoedowner Hops night at Ron Tonkin Field. Twenty-eight square dancing baseball fans met for an evening of hot dogs, cheering, brats, towel waving, sausage, game playing, sauerkraut, picture taking, watermelon, a generally all around great time. We sang “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” during the 7th inning stretch, oohed over some cracking loud hits, recovered a ball, got some autographs, and learned Barley’s first name. We were such great fans that no one booed the umpire. Thanks to the Hops for the absolutely perfect weather and thanks to a wonderful group of friends for a perfect summer evening.

We always look forward to TVC’s Hahn Barn Dance and for good reason. Rain and wind had threatened but fortunately the weather man was wrong! Conditions were perfect for dancing. Hoedowners followed their crew, Daryl and Yvonne, and took home the attendance banner. The potluck was delish and we love the opportunity to linger over dinner while we visit with other dancers. Gary and Bette Hahn are such an asset to the square dance community and our hearty thanks for their generosity and hard work.

What do we have in store for October? On the 10th we’ll be celebrating Oktoberfest with a German menu and a bit of polka music then, on the 24th, it will be the infamous Hoedowner Monster Mash…. black lights and all!

See you in Seaside for the Sashay,

We heard that there is a rumor circulating to the effect that we will turn into an Advanced club. If anyone tells you that, tell the person that it isn't so. We started the club to be a plus club for individuals, and we plan to keep it that way. When we started it more than 30 years ago, there was no place to dance plus on west side and nowhere for singles to dance plus as singles. We resolved that situation and are still happily dancing PLUS.

R Square D welcomed the month of August in with a Hawaiian themed dance with guest caller Jim Raupp. A good time was had followed up with banana splits with all the toppings. We appreciated all the clubs that came to dance in the summer heat with us. Visiting clubs were Harbor Haylofters, Cougar Squares, Toe Draggers, Stardust and Ruff and Ruffles. We will wrap up this very warm month with a back to school dance on the 26th.

As we head into autumn and the changing of the seasons we are excitedly looking forward to a new set of lessons starting on October 7th. It is always fun to share the steps of the dance with new students.

We hope to see lots of you at our Octoberfest this year. It will be at the Rose Valley Grange on October 2nd-4th. Those attending will be entertained by the River City Riders and a weekend of fun dancing with Les Seeley as our featured caller and Tami Helms cueing. Please come and join us for some good old square and round dancing, good food and fellowship with new and old friends alike.

For more information about the R Square D club please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our caller is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

Sunset Promenaders - Link
The Sunset Promenaders had 23-dancers at the Annual TVC Hahn Picnic and Barn Dance on August 29th. Daryl and Yvonne Clendenin called and cued. The potluck picnic is usually down by the pond; but the weather report said rain so we had the dinner in the barn. It was a fun time as usual.

The Promenaders Plus Dances are October 1st and 15th with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Ken Pratt cueing.

Please reserve October 3rd on your calendar to come to the Sunset Promenaders 30th Anniversary. We have a national caller Dan Preedy and Ken Pratt cueing; and we are having a full ham dinner at 6:30; start the dance about 7:30; with a dessert break at 10:00. Tickets for the dance are $15 per couple or $8 per person.

The Seaside Sashay is on October 16th and 17th at the Convention Center; so fill out the registration form; send it in with money; we will send you your ribbons; and the program book. Daryl Clendenin and Chuck Garner are calling and Debbie Taylor is cueing. The Sunset Promenaders will be dark on Saturday October 17th.

Toe Draggers - Link
The Toe Dragger’s had a busy month of August with 3 visitations, picking up 3 banners. We had a great turnout, for all 3 visits. We would like to thank the WaveSteppers for their $25 donation to Susan G. Komen Foundation. Another big thank you to everyone who helped us with donations and time to make our special dance “Man Enough to Wear Pink” a complete success.

Our campout up at Detroit Lake almost was cancelled by wind, bad weather, fire danger and low lake water, “But” the Toes have a fun group of members that are full of spunk, spirit and determination. We can always have a fun time, whatever happens.

Our mainstream lessons started with a bang Wednesday evenings at our grange. Bev will be teaching round dance lessons in January 2016.

This month we have our Fall Festival Dance on October 2nd. October 16th you’ll find us at the Odd Fellows Hall in Hillsboro celebrating Halloween with our Thriller of the Night Dance.

We’ve been together as a club for 40 years. May the next 40 bring us together, dancing with new and old friends. The Square Dance Community is the best.

Tri Squares - Link
The Tri Squares had their 17th anniversary dance on September 18th. Some may not know that Tri Squares is actually a formation of three former square dance clubs. These clubs include the Tigard 59ers, The Merry C-Saws, and The Robin Hoods. The three clubs joined together during September of 1998. The club is fortunate to still have some of its founding members. The Tri Squares logo has three squares that overlap one another. The three squares represent the three different clubs.

We will be having two dances during the first month of Fall. Terry Halley will be calling and Sandra Pinion will be cueing. Our first dance is the first Saturday on the 3rd. The theme for the dance is “Apple Fest”. Our second dance for the month is on the third Friday on the 16th. The theme for this dance is "Autumn in the Air". We look forward to dancing with all of our friends this fall. We are thankful for all who come and visit Tri Squares.

Valley Squares - Link
Valley Squares is dark this month as we support our neighbors, Sunset Promenaders, at their Anniversary Dance October 3rd and at Seaside Sashay, October 16th-18th, where the featured callers will be our own Chuck Garner and our sister-club's Daryl Clendenin. Our August Visitation to Garibaldi garnered a banner and good will. We had a fun day visiting local sites before meeting for dinner and crossing the street to an entertaining and friendly dance sponsored by the Wave Steppers.

Valley Squares, Rosetown Ramblers, and friends spread the gospel of square dancing at three demonstration dances: the Crawfish Festival, the Multnomah Days Parade, and the Highlands Community dance which was followed by our annual picnic hosted by Al Maner and Mary Davis. Thanks to everyone who participated and to Janienne Alexander for organizing the Crawfish event and Jeff Knapp for the Multnomah parade. Special gratitude to Chuck Garner, who donated his voice, time and choreography to all three events.

A hearty group of visitors to our Hawaiian Luau and Hot August Nights Cruisin' dances resulted in more friendships and healthy ways to spend summer evenings.

The Wave Steppers’ last dance of the 2015 season will be Saturday, October 10th, on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall. This will be a Fall-themed Dance, with club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel. Line dancing starts at 7 pm, with squares at 7:30.

The club will be dark for the winter—but it’ll be a short winter. Monthly dances start again in March, with dances in March, April, May, June, July, August, September, and October. All the dances are held the second Saturday of the month, and are on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall.

In addition, a new round of square dance classes starts the second Wednesday in January. The classes are held at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook, and are free. Please visit our webpage for up to date information, www.wavesteppers.org.

Umpqua Area Council
Wowie-zowie, August was a super fun but busy time for us here in Roseburg. We were busy preparing the dance floor for the Fair, then actually dancing at the Fair, and of course, once the fair was over the dance floor had to be taken apart and hauled back out to the barn. A big thanks needs to go out to the work crew volunteers who helped make it happen. The evening temperatures at the Fair were perfect, and each of the four nights we danced to a different caller, so we had lots of variety. Scott, Dale, Chuck and Don did their best to

attract the fair goers who were walking right by us to stop and watch us dance as well as toss out great plugs for the Buckeroo’s upcoming lessons. Neil was our Cuer each of the nights and as always, he made it easy for everyone to round dance. Our Timber 8’s delegate, Laura Rowe is moving back to Washington State. We will miss her hard work and dedication to square dancing but at the same time say goodbye to her with a smile, wish her the very best and know that another club will be lucky to have her in their square.

Did you think the summer zipped by? We surely thought so at the Buckeroo Barn. Before we know it, our clubs will be planning Halloween Hoedowns and summer will be just a pleasant memory. Some of us will be wishing we had not complained about the hot weather because we will be bundling up to keep warm. Because we were going to be dancing four nights at the Fair this month, we went dark for our first Saturday Dance in August.

Our 3rd Saturday Dance dance was held on National Lemon Meringue Pie Day. Many of the dancers were decked out in yellow and we snacked on every conceivable type of lemon or yellow dessert imaginable. An ice cold glass container of lemonade was a great addition to our “Think lemon, wear yellow” dance theme. We wound down the month of August with our annual picnic/potluck held at the home of one of our members. Fifty folks dined on burgers and other potluck food and the afternoon wasn’t complete until we were treated to Dick Stevenson stepping up to the microphone and entertaining us with one of his lengthy but riveting 10 minute jokes. (Follow up on facebook and see what we are up to.)

Happy Dancing,

Rita Schuchard
