Oregon Federation News
March 2016

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 March 2016
President's Corner

Recently I was asked what the Federation was up to these days, with the lower number of dancers and clubs, lower attendance at festivals and no National Convention to work on. All negatives, true. But there are positives, too. The Federation board is in the unique position of having money, experience, and volunteers to help our clubs not only to ride out the storm, but to offer help in recruiting the next generation of dancers. Our job over the next few years is to spread the word that we are not dead. As representatives you all need to put on a positive attitude and let the clubs know that help is available. If your council wants to host a summer festival or weekend festival of another name, we can help. We have experienced people ready and willing to help fill out your committee roster. We can offer advice for venues, callers and cuers, and budgets. We have a $3,000 loan available for seed money to help get the ball rolling. If your club wants to hold lessons, we can offer the benefit of experience in advertising and holding lessons. We have grants available to help your club pay for advertising, callers and venues. If your club needs help with paying rent or publicizing dances, we have grants available. It is up to each one of us to spread the word and be positive about our favorite activity. We need to be out volunteering in our neighborhoods. We need to do demos and parades. To recruit new dancers and do everything we can to keep them coming back with smiles and positive attitudes.

Editor's Note

This month, we have an article written by National Caller Jon Jones on the decline in square dancing. It is worth your time.

We also have brief biographies of the nominees for Federation offices. Check the "Federation Events" section.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Officer Nominations

Within the next few weeks, your club secretaries will begin to receive the ballots for Federation officers for the 2016-2017 dance year. You may review the bios of the nominees by clicking this link.

Publicity Column

We have set up a Facebook page for the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs, and it is ready for your flyers and comments. This page has not been created to replace the OFN, but to work with it to help spread information and reminders about our dances and special activities. Please visit the page, join it, and start posting your flyers and reminders. I will try to forward everything that I see on my personal wall, but I need help spreading the word! If your club or council has a FB page, please send me the name and I'll "like" it so that I can help you keep the Federation's page up to date with your dancing information. Please encourage all of your dancing friends to like the Federation page too. If you have information on the National Convention, festivals, or dances that are in another state that you think Oregon dancers would be interested in attending, please feel free to post this information, too.

Kathy Roberts, State Publicity Chair

We have dancers in our club willing to run for offices. Pat Preston is willing to run for president, a post which she's had previously. Pat will do a good job for the club. Rosco Isbell was willing to run for Vice-President. This is a new experience for Rosco, but he's got heart and determination to do a good job. One of our new members, Dianne Trippett, is running for secretary. Dianne has been secretary for other organizations and will do a good job. Another new member, Tonie Nichols, is running for treasurer. Tonie's dad, Ray Nichols, was a long time square and round dancer. The memory board at the hall in Springfield is dedicated to Ray. Ray's name appears first followed by other dedicated square and round dancers who have passed away. Tonie's wife, Barbara, made a new banner for our club for use at Mid-Winter festivals when we participate in grand marches and such. We look forward to a new year with these fine folks.

We want to thank the folks who held offices last year. Thank you to Randy Graboyes, Janet Geiger, Pat Preston and Sharon Greenman.

Mimi Mills, lifetime member of Danebo Circle 8, was admitted to Avamere Rehabilitation Center on Chambers Street following surgery on her heel at Riverbend Hospital. I go see her often. Mimi is very tired from physical therapy and is itching to go home. That's always a good sign.

We're discovered that Don Anderson, former member of Danebo Circle 8, is at the same rehabilitation center right across the hall from Mimi. We all paid him a visit today. Don had surgery on his foot as well. Small world. We pray that Mimi and Don heal quickly and are both on their feet soon.

Keep on dancin'

January was a busy month! We have a new year and are nurturing our new dancers. We had a good dance thanks to Leonard and Sandra, our great caller and cuer. Some members visited the Corvallis Squares dance and 12 attended Mid-Winter Festival in Albany. What a wonderful time that was! We already have our ribbons for next year and we'll have two featured callers then.

Our club gained seven new members when we held graduation at our February dance.

Please note that our club is selling our dance trailer and we are offering it to square dance clubs first. More details will be available soon. Also, we voted to go dark for the months of June, July and August this year. We will be doing a lot of visiting during that time so watch for us! Carmen Rost

This March is an unusual month for us, in that we won't have dances at the Congregational Church until April.

We're looking forward to our coast trip at Gleneden Beach Community Club and dancing both Friday and Saturday nights, March 11 and 12... We want to mention again that all are welcome! This has been a long standing tradition for the Corvallis Squares. It's been fun to have visitors at this dance in past years, including folks from the former Toledo 49ers.

We've decided to go dark the fourth Saturday in March since it's the night before Easter. We'll be back in April with our regular dance nights! Karen Karplus

January was a big month for the Lebanon Square Circlers with our 67th Birthday Dance on the 17th of the month. We had a great time with lots of dancers, Charlotte Jeskey and Jim Voll calling and Jackie Gale cueing, and strawberry shortcake being served.

Many of our club members attended the Mid Winter Festival in Albany. The club had a dinner together on Saturday Night at Pop's Branding Iron.

The club is in transition now as we are finishing waltz and going into a season of adding songs to what we know. Maybe a few added steps, but more music than anything else for now.

We had six couples in the Mid-Winter Showcase of Rounds. Our instructor, Cheryl, stood by as we performed first on the program. We had one member missing due to illness, so Cheryl’s husband filled in for him. I personally think we did pretty well.

We planned a Valentine’s Dance on February 11, which will be over by the time you read this. Hope we had fun. Were you there?

Our summer season will be Tango to keep us busy during convention, festival, and various educational seminars that people will be attending in June, July and August.

We dance on Thursdays at the SSDC, so come and join us as we progress through Cheryl’s song list. Marilyn Schmit

A big shout out to our Vice President Nancy Donaldson for organizing our visitation to the Valley River Dancers New Dancer Dance on January 23. We had 19 members of our club in attendance to assist the new dancers. It was Great Fun and we got to bring our Banner back!

We are still recuperating from the excellent time had by everyone at the Mid-Winter Festival with great dancing and loads of fellowship. It was wonderful to catch up with dancers from all over Oregon and Washington!

We are dancing on March 4 and March 18 at the Salem Square Dance Center. Pre-Rounds are at 7:00 pm, Plus at 7:30 pm, and Mainstream with Rounds at 8:00 pm. Also, mark your calendars for the Salem Swingin' Stars Golden Anniversary Dance on April 15! Come help celebrate 50 years of dancing. Randy Dibble will be calling and Jeanine Norden cueing. We had a wonderful turnout for our New Dancers/Baked Potato Dinner Dance in January. Thank you to everyone who came. Attendees were able to enjoy a great dance with Leonard Snodgrass and Frances Herigstad.

We graduated five students just before Mid-Winter and all of them joined the club. Three of them also attended Mid-Winter. The Silver Dragons & Silver Knights did a demo at Mid-Winter on Friday evening. We hope you were able to watch the kids.

We have about two squares going to Canada for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival in May. We are about halfway to our fundraising goal for the year. We are still selling festival pins and our raffle tickets. We have our Fundraising Dance on Sunday March 6 and we will draw our raffle winners there. We will also have a silent auction and will do a demo during the afternoon. Please check out our flyer and we hope to see you there. Petrina Buchheit

In February we are planning our annual Chocolate dance that is always a "treat" and Chinese New Year dance. In April we will have our Birthday dance, so look for a flyer soon.

We are starting lessons again in February and hope to have a new batch of dancers ready for the activity. Come join us at one of our dances, you will be glad you did....Sandy

Valley River Dancers - Link
Valley River Dancers had a packed house for the new dancers dance in late January. One highlight had to have been the dumbfounded expression on the face of a new dancer when she walked in and saw plus being danced on the floor! With profound relief, she and nearly 100 other dancers (with two squares from the Salem Swingin' Stars) soon enjoyed mainstream to the calling of Randy Dibble.

Come join us on Friday February 26 for our Anniversary Dance. We'll have a half hour of plus beginning at 7:30 and then from 8:00 till 10:30 we'll dance mainstream and rounds. Also, a shout out to the members and guests who made our Sweetheart Dance so much fun. Thanks! Perrin Damon

Willamette Squares - Link
Due to a sudden turn in the weather, the Willamette Squares' new dancer dance ended up being cancelled. However, it was rescheduled for the date of our regular monthly Saturday dance at the Salem Square Dance Center, and it worked out beautifully. It was well attended with seven squares! There were guest callers along with Willamette Squares caller, Sandy Harris, and cuer, Jackie Gale. The room was aptly decorated in a snowflake winter theme. Special thanks to everyone who pitched in and decorated, with special recognition to John Templin and Georgette Hagerman, for their efforts.

On Sunday January 24, we held graduation. Nine dancers graduated: six round

dancers and three square dancers were honored. Some of the students ordered five boxes of pizza which were enjoyed and appreciated by all.

During the Mid-Winter dance in Albany, a number of the Willamette Squares members were represented. We look forward to our regular dance in February with a sample of some chocolate Valentine treats, to celebrate Oregon's birthday, and to recognize present and past presidents' birthdays. Portland Area Council - Link
This is an exciting time of the year for us, as we are nearing elections for our PAC officers. For the last several years, I have headed the nominating committee. This year, I am approaching it a little differently.

Here’s my new formula. All year long I listen for complaints about the PAC leadership, and I listen to who says them. And this time of year I invite those who reproach to run on the board “ to make a change “ to make a difference. If they don’t run, at least they know why there is no change. The onus will be on those who reproach.

Another change I’m doing is putting anyone down on the nomination list who is interested. The days of term limits are over. It’s not like there are hundreds of people in a council anymore, and very few people are willing to volunteer, thus my willingness to run anybody. If any complaints, I’ll put them on the ballet!

We’ll have a saintly dance in March. That’s right; St. Patrick’s day is rapidly approaching. Mike Kious will be calling that night, with Tami Helms cueing. We always have a lot of nice Pat’s Day decorations, generously furnished by our faithful member, Dorcus Décor.

We’ll also have Jim Hattrick, calling and cueing, on both the 9th and the 23rd.

And we’re going to start making our snacks garlic free. Our club Director of Oral Hygiene (Mac McGargle) tells us we need to be kissing sweet.

Come join our motley crew any Wednesday evening.

Greetings from the Buzzing Bees. Wow! March already. I am really ready for spring. It has been a long, wet winter. I am writing this the week after Oregon's mid winter festival where we joined the Toe Draggers for our Saturday night meal. We share a caller now so we have an extra bond.

March brings two dances - our workshop dance on 3/5 and our Honor the Irish dance on 3 / 19. I have been pleased with our workshop dances because we can identify moves we have difficulty with in both square dancing and round dancing and then have the opportunity to work on them so it makes things easier and smoother. It has been rather fun. Our Irish dance is always fun because we usually have a guest caller - Mike Holmes and we always have Irish Sundaes for break. Yum. If you don't know what an Irish Sunday is, come to the dance To honor the wearing of the green and find out. See you in a square!

Mid-Winter Festival saw a great showing of the Cut-Ups. We got together on Saturday evening for a Chinese dinner to take a break from the dancing. Those staying at the Phoenix Inn enjoyed some fun time together. It was great to also see so many youth at the festival!

Spring is time for the Country Cut-Ups to clean out their closets, attics, basements, or where ever those unused items are lurking. The Annual Barn Sale is coming up in April! Be sure to ask your friends and neighbors for donations, then invite to come shopping. This is one of major fundraisers to support the Barn overhead. March also brings our election of officers. Consider whether it is time to step up and serve the club in a new way. We can all find ways to support this great organization and keep our favorite past time going.

We are having a mainstream class taught by Scott Zinser. The students are excited and eager to learn. The angels are doing a great job of showing up to support them. Keep up the good work. Anyone wanting to brush up on their dance skills can come join us at the Boring Barn 7:30 to 9:30 every Thursday evening.

Happy Hoppers - Link
Once again, our club caller, Jim Hattrick, has proven the old adage, "You can't keep a good man down." On January 7, Jim suffered a stroke, seriously impairing his ability to speak. Luckily, at the time, Jim was conducting lessons for the Columbia River Dancers. There were people there who recognized the problem and called 911 immediately. He was quickly transported to the hospital where he got "clot-buster" medication 2 hours after the onset of symptoms. For a couple of days, Jim had a lot of trouble turning his thoughts into speech, which was really bad news for a square dance caller. Then, miraculously, he bounced right back. On January 18, just 11 days after the stroke, he attended our Monday night lesson session and actually conducted a tip! As I write this, on January 31, Jim is easing back into it, honoring his scheduled calling commitments with a backup caller on hand. Like the "Energizer Bunny", Jim just keeps going, and we are all truly blessed.

For many years, the Happy Hoppers have used the Clark County Square Dance Center as our venue for dances and lessons. We have recently been informed that the building and land have been put up for sale. It is sad to note that at some time in the future, we may lose this important resource. We are closely monitoring this situation and doing whatever we can to keep it from happening.

Our next club dine-out will be on February 24th at Gustav's on 164th Avenue at 5:30.

Twice a year, we have a used square dance clothing sale, which is always a popular event. It happens concurrently with our Monday night lessons, and will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 on February 29. Folks travel from across the region to do some bargain-hunting, so best get there early!

We will host our regular first and third Saturday dances at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Our annual St. McHattrick's Day Dance will be celebrated on March 6 with the "wearin' o' the green" and the "eatin' o' the 'taters". March 20 will be a regular club dance. Jim Hattrick will take care of both calling and cueing.

We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. We encourage beginning dancers to start introductory lessons on the first Monday of every month at 7:30. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00.

Everyone seemed to have a great time at Mid-Winter this year. We had about 20 Oaky Doaks at Lum Yuen Restaurant on Saturday night for dinner. Some members came down for Saturday only, so they had to get in as much dancing as possible in a short period of time. Our own Eugene Ivy, who was the Festival’s Vendor Chairman, spent most of the weekend with the 20 participating merchants in the Vendor Hall.

A very long time ago, I remember how I used to dread January. Everybody knows the routine: dreary gray dripping skies; ice and other freezing unpleasantness; Christmas bills; nothing to look forward to until spring, or so it seemed. That was before my husband Leonard and I discovered Square Dancing, somewhere around 1965, and then, best of all, Winter Festival during the last weekend of January.

It’s a fabulous event. In those days, it was held in Eugene. For us Portland area people, when it was moved to Albany, it was so much closer. I commend those folks who put it together, starting, really, the year before the year before, at least. We know how much work is involved in “simple” for once every now and then festivals, but to do it over and over again! Thank you for your work.

River City Dancers had thirty-five attending this year. We had our usual group photo taken by Jolene Cummings again. Thanks, Jolene and Ed for doing that for us. It’s a special challenge to get that many people together in one place at the same time. And thanks, Al Wolf, for your help in coordinating us.

I don’t have any official figures, but it was my impression that attendance was lower this year. But speaking of impressions, Rocky and I were hugely pleased with what I thought were a much larger group of newer, younger dancers, who were so lively and fun.

See you next festival!

A small but boisterous band of Ramblers raised the roof of the Milwaukie Grange at our First Saturday Dance on February 6. In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, our theme was simply “Chocolate.” We aren’t sure if it was all the chocolate we consumed, the frenetic pace set by caller Chuck Garner, or our fabulous visitors from Floor Dusters, Oaky Doaks, and Chaps and Petticoats, but our Fitbits were a-blazing and our footwork was amazing.

We sure do love to dance”and we’d love to dance with YOU at our First Saturday Dance on March 5 at the Milwaukie Grange. Our theme for March”in anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day”is “Get Lucky!” We’ll have a potluck from 6-7 and then alternate Mainstream and Plus tips from 7-9:30. Caller Kris Jensen will be making an encore appearance from Albuquerque for this dance. We warmly welcome couples and solo dancers.

Each year the Tualatin Valley Council holds a Presidents Appreciation Potluck to recognize current and past club presidents as well as to present a special award to persons who have made significant contributions in our dance community. This "TVC Recognition Award" was presented to Lane and Marie Clem, members of the Eager Beavers and the TVC. They were recognized for their commitment to and leadership of the square dance community. They have held multiple offices in their clubs, the Tualatin Valley Council, and with the Oregon Federation at the State level. Lane is currently in a 2-year term as Treasurer of the State Federation and is in his third year as the Treasurer for the TVC. Marie is the current Vice President of the Eager Beavers. Both of them have been instrumental in the re-writing of the By-Laws and the Practices and Procedures for the Valley Squares and Eager Beavers clubs. Lane has helped re-write the TVC by-laws and Constitution, the P & P's and just recently the Delegates Introduction to TVC document. With a standing ovation they were presented an engraved plaque and gold bars by Gary Clark, Council President.

The next Council event will be "Spring Fling", a fifth Saturday dance on April 30th at the Aloha Grange, 3425 SW 185th Avenue, Aloha. Jim Hattrick will be calling and Ken Pratt cueing. Pre-rounds begin at 7:30 followed by Mainstream at 8:00 with Plus Tips and Intermediate Rounds interspersed through the evening. We made it! The Columbia River Dancers will be celebrating its first birthday, and what a year it's been -- like any toddler the excitement and sometimes fear of the first year just does not stop. We started dancing in one place only to end up somewhere else. We may miss the air conditioning at the YMCA but love the acoustics at the Hazel Dell Grange. We've changed our lesson day not just once, but twice this year, and it's still only the beginning of February. As you may know our caller, Jim Hattrick, suffered a stroke at our first lesson held at the Grange, so it was a group of square dancers that quickly reacted to get emergency medical aid. He's doing much better now, and is even able to call part of a dance, but we needed to make some quick adjustments. So our lessons will now be held on Tuesdays which was when Jim had originally planned to hold his Tuesday "Plus and a Little Bit More" dances. And instead of Jim calling our last dance, we hired The King himself, Elvis! Well... Mark Wheeler. Jim showed up as well and called several tips. He never fails to amaze us.

We hope you will join us as we celebrate our very first birthday! On March 12th Adam Christman from Spokane will be calling at our First Anniversary Dance. We will be giving away commemorative dangles to the first 50 attendees. Since it will be held just 5 days before St. Patrick's Day, and because our club colors are blue & green, we were thinking we could call it our "Green and Blue Anniversary Dance." Whatever color you chose, come celebrate with us.

Our second dance in March will be on Saturday, the 26th with a caller to be determined.

Lastly, kudos to the committee of the Mid-Winter Festival. A great time was had by all of the members of our club and we are looking forward to next year already.

2016 has started out with a zing! We greeted that sweet Baby New Year, in the diapers and top hat, with our Black and White Sparkle Dance. Actually the dance was more in the style of the glittering Time Square crystal ball. What a spectacular evening with dancers in their black and white with plenty of bling and the ballroom twinkling with hundreds of lights. I have to mention that the dancers were using their best twinkle toes with seven squares filling the ballroom. The Hoedowners outdid themselves with a lovely array of appetizers and hors d’oeuvres. What a festive way to start off the dance year.

On the 13th we held our Annual Poker Run at our new dancer class. That was also the evening of the big Powerball and although no one we know was a lucky winner in that drawing, there were three lucky winners at class. Prizes included vintage square dance glasses, custom made square dance towels and the ubiquitous Starbucks gift card.

Fifty-one Hoedowners were at the Wild West Chuck Wagon Dance on the 23rd. What a fabulous turnout. Ninety-three total attendees so the dance floor was rocking and most stayed for the Chili-Hot Dog feed. Darlene Ditsworth outdid herself with her astounding decorations. How many pairs of cowboy boots does that family have? Sally Duyck served beverages from the “bar”. What a night! Richard Lane was calling and harmonizing with Daryl, a great couple of cowpokes. We had to set up extra chairs for the chili and hot dogs. Thank you to everyone who came and whooped it up with us.

Mid-Winter Festival just about the best dance weekend of the year. Thirty-nine Hoedowners decided they didn’t want to miss a moment. We dined together Friday and Saturday evenings and owe a big thanks to Mike and Sally Duyck for hosting the post parties each night. We always enjoy the shopping and sharing. Hope you had a chance to see our very own Randy Lewis and Debbie Olson at the Showcase of Rounds. Three days of new callers, new music and new faces. We hope to see all of you there again next year.

What does March hold in store? I think it will be a little competition for that all important Traveling Trophy. The Hoedowners want to give your club an opportunity to claim it so on March 12 we’ll put her up for grabs. Trophy Dance, Aloha Grange, March 12th let the competition begin! Any federation club may claim the Trophy by having the highest percentage of members present.

By March 26th we’ll all be enjoying rites of spring so what better time to have a Spring Fever Dance? I can smell the daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths now. Please join us.

Our second January dance was exceptionally lively and fun because several dancers from Valley River Dancers joined us for an evening of Randy Dibble's calling. We look forward to their next dance with us. Unfortunately, Jeanine Norden's throat prevented her from cuing for us. Dennis Smith came to the rescue. Like Jeanine and husband Paul, Dennis is always ready to help fill a square. If you ever want to check if there has been a last minute change, go to our website for the latest news.

R Square D - Link
2016 started at a busy pace. R Square D co-hosted with Ruff and Ruffles a New Years Eve dance. It was a small dance, but enjoyed by those attending. Jim Raupp was the caller and Susan Healea was the cuer. Next was our Friday night dance on the 8th. We were joined by dancers from Cougar Squares, Happy Hoppers and Fairway Village.

Sou'Wester Council hosted the Washington State Federation Meeting at the Rose Valley Grange on January 9th. There was a dance on Friday night at the Rose Valley Hall. On Saturday morning members of R Square D provided a hot breakfast for the attendees, and Ruff & Ruffles provided their lunch. On Saturday night Ruff & Ruffles hosted a dance and those who were staying in town attended that dance also.

A Super Soup dance was held on January 23rd with many attending wearing Sea Hawks attire. Soup was served to members of Cougar Squares and Harbor Haylofters, Ruff & Ruffles and R Square D

March brings us St Patrick's Day. On the 11th we will be "Wearin' o' The Green. Anyone who has a 2016 festival outfit is encouraged to wear it that night. On March 26th we will have a B51 dance with Richard Lane calling. Come on out and join us for a good time.

The club has started square dance lessons each Sunday between 4:00 and 6:00 and has about a dozen students. We plan on running classes through all the Mainstream level moves. We have a wide variety of students; youngest is 9-years old, couples, singles, prior dancers, never danced, etc. As of the end of January we have had four lessons, and not taking any more students unless they have prior experience.

Now that the Holidays are over, we hope to do more visitations and hope to have more visitors at our dances, too. As a Club we have Mainstream dances with Mike Stout calling on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays and we also have Plus dances with Darrell Kalmbach calling on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursday. We have been doing this a year already now and it has worked out pretty well. Our cuer in Ken Pratt and he has been doing intermediate Rounds before all of our dances and also doing intermediate Rounds workshop and dance on Sundays from 6:30 to 8:00.

March 19th, 3rd Saturday the Club will be dark as we are visiting the Valley Squares Anniversary Dance.

Toe Draggers - Link
It’s been a busy two months for the Toe Draggers, as we’ve ushered in 2016. We finished our mainstream lessons with graduation on January 27th, celebrating with our new dancing friends. KC and Linda did a great job. Thanks to you both.

Bev and Harlan Flint started round dance lessons in mid-January. They will follow up with waltz lessons before they are done. They sure do make our time together fun.

Hope you had a chance to attend Mid-Winter. Organizers worked so hard to give us a great weekend. The Toes gathered for dinner together in Albany on Saturday late afternoon and were back out on the dance floor to continue their weekend of dance and meeting with old and new friends. Great fun had by all.

Our Sadie Hawkins Dance was full of great costumes, funny jokes, a yummy southern style dinner, and lots of great dancing. How this group has fun together on the dance floor! We shared the love!!!!

We're hoping you wear your green for our March 4th "Luck of the 4 Sided Square Dance". We're celebrating St. Patrick’s Day a little early, but I’m sure the leprechauns won't mind. We will follow up on March 18th with our famous Ducky Dance in honor of Tom Gray, and his special collection of world renowned ducks. You might want to wear yellow with a duck bill and feathers, but it’s not required.

Looking forward to Spring and filling up our calendars with dance events. See you in a square.

Tri Squares - Link
On February 6th, the Tri Squares had a “Share Your Heart Dance”. This dance was a special time emphasizing the season of love. The Tigard Grange was filled with beautiful shades of red and pink. This dance was special. Two members shared that they were celebrating 50 years together. The night was filled with love and fun.

The Tri Squares are looking forward to our upcoming dances in March we will be having two dances. Terry Halley will be calling and Sandra Pinion will be cueing. Our first dance is the first Saturday on the 5th. The theme for the dance is “Orient Express”. Our second dance for the month is on the third Friday on the 18th. The theme for this dance is "Bit o' the Irish". We look forward to dancing with all of our friends. See you in a square.

We had a small but lively group at our New Beginnings Dance January 2nd. Luckily the snow and ice decided to hold off so our dancers could get home safely.

Rise and shine!! There were three squares of early birds show up at the Aloha Grange on Wednesday morning, January 6, at 5 a.m. We were there to show the metropolitan area how much fun we all have square dancing as Channel 8's Drew Carney featured dancers from various TVC clubs on his morning segment. Thanks to Bill Calder for coordinating this and to all the participants.

On the 12th we kicked off our lessons with a Community Dance at the Aloha Grange. With Pete's ads in local newspapers, Bill Calder's spearheading the Drew Carney spot, Janienne Alexander plugging our class on Meet-Up, and our members handing out business cards, we had 26 students that night.

We barely scraped together two squares of members and guests at our Celebrate Diversity Dance on the 16th. We realize that dark rainy Oregon nights make it tempting to stay home, and that many of you are traveling to sunnier climes, or that the winter colds and flu have set in.

Please encourage your new dancers and students to attend our Jamboree Tuesday, March 15th at 7 p.m. at Aloha Grange. We have a nice group of students who are progressing at a rapid rate. We will also have gently used clothing for sale.

Our 67th Anniversary Dance is March 19th this year. Randy Dibble will be co-calling with Chuck, and Connie will be cueing. This will be a Mainstream dance with every 3rd tip Plus. Open break downstairs from 8 to 9:30. Take a look at our flyer in the Special Dances section. Joy Choy and Mary Davis are chairing a themed basket fundraiser for this dance: Sports, Chocolate, Barbecue, Wine, Beach, Games, Coffee/Tea/Hot Chocolate & Tasty Morsels. We are charging $7 for this special event.

What a great time we all had at Midwinter! My thighs hurt, however. Six straight hours of dancing on concrete will do that to me… Those of you who danced the entire weekend are phenoms! We had a large group for dinner at Cascade Grill Saturday night.

Wave Steppers - Link
The Wave Steppers’ first dance of 2016 will be Saturday, March 12th at Garibaldi City Hall, with club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel. City Hall is at 107 6th St. (at Acacia), and there’s a brand-new big parking lot next door on Acacia. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. This is Crab Races Weekend (the world-famous Crab Races are held at the Old Mill, just a few blocks away), probably the second-biggest weekend of the year in Garibaldi. If you need a hotel or motel room, or RV space, it’s a good idea to reserve it early.

Square dance classes continue every Wednesday evening, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Tillamook Elks lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook. The lessons are taught by club caller Joe Wrabek, and are free. (Joe also brings home-baked cookies.)

From March through October, the Wave Steppers will be having dances on the second Saturday of the month, on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall. April’s dance (April 9th) will feature veteran caller and cuer Jim Hattrick.

The Buckeroo Barn had Mike Sikorsky from Arizona call our first dance of the New Year. We had a great time dancing with our friends from all along the I5 corridor. We had visitors from Yreka, California all the way up to Vancouver, Washington! The Star Promenaders from Medford, and the Charlie Brown Squares from Grants Pass, both took home banners for their visitations. The evening was tons of fun and the barn was filled with 15 squares of dancers all enjoying Mike’s energetic performance.

Many of our members, along with a large number of our new dancers, met up at Mid- Winter in Albany. Everyone had a great time dancing and catching up with friends. When we came back home, our new dancers graduated and the barn now has 15 new members! We are excited to welcome them to our “Buckeroo Family”!

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
