Oregon Federation News
April 2016

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 April 2016
Editor's Note

Now that spring has begun, I am sure Oregon will soon be back to the sun-filled days to which we Oregonians we are all accustomed.

This month, we have a letter reminding us not to get stuck in a rut, and an obituary for long-time caller Rick Ewing.

Just before press time, we received word that the Federation has received a very generous donation from the estate of long time dance Susan Corbett, who lost her fight with cancer some time ago. The Federation board will be discussing the best way to use these funds for the benefit of Oregon's square dance community.

Thank you to the 85 people who have joined the new Federation Facebook page. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new Federation Facebook page, from your Facebook home page, type in the search field, “Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs”. Click on the “Join” group button so that you can explore and post your club’s square dancing flyers and information to this page. This page has not been created to replace the OFN, but to work with it to help spread information and reminders about our dances and special activities. In an attempt to have information from all of the clubs and councils, I have joined many of the club and council Facebook pages so I can forward posts to the new Federation from your pages. Now, I need your help spreading the word! If your club or council has a FB page that I have not joined, please send me its name so that I can help you keep the Federation's page up to date with your dancing information. Please encourage all of your dancing friends to join the Federation page too. If you have information on the National Convention, festivals, or dances that are in another state that you think Oregon dancers would be interested in attending, please feel free to post this information, too.

Kathy Roberts, Publicity Coordinator

Swinging Mountaineers Plus - Link
Many thanks to all the Plus dancers who've come to support the first two Swinging Mountaineers dance/workshop weekends. We've had a great time dancing and learning with more to come. The Saturday workshops are designed to help Plus dancers understand the definitions of Plus and Mainstream calls inside and out and every which way so that squares keep moving and smiling especially when callers get creative.

These Saturday morning workshops aren't sissy stuff, and we know it's hard to roll out of bed after an all-out fun night of Friday night dancing. But, set your alarm clock and let our fresh coffee and doughnuts be your gateway to the dance floor. You might be sleepy, but you won't be bored.

Since the original information was distributed we've had a few changes, and the flyer below reflects our current lineup. Richard Lane is calling our next dance, and Jim Steele will be our master instructor on Saturday. Randy Dibble has joined the lineup at the end of May and will do an A workshop in the afternoon in addition to his morning Plus workshop. Mark your calendars and invite your friends from around the state.

If you've got questions, Lonnie Waak has the answer, 541-382-7939.

Danebo Circle 8 - Link
We had our 66th Birthday Party Dance in March. Dancers from the different clubs in our area attended. There was a really cute cake with square dancers on it and ice cream and other goodies. 66 years ago we started dancing in Sadie Bertlesen's kitchen in the Danebo area of Eugene. Ivan Midlam was the caller. There was no cuer as the round dancers learned the Rounds of the Month from the caller. Dancers bought their own records and memorized the dances. Now our caller is Roger Putzler and cuer is Christina Corelli. Shirley McCornack cued for many years when we were still at Prairie Hall. Sharon Greenman also cued for Danebo Circle 8. Dale Hornberger, Brent Anderson, Richard Finch and most recently, Kirby Goode, called. 66 years is a long time! Happy Birthday!

Mimi Mills, lifetime member of Danebo Circle 8, is still atr Avamere Rehab Center on Chambers Street in Eugene. She's bored and company is encouraged and very welcome. She's better which is a good sign. Her family takes her to church and out to eat once in a while. We pray for Mimi's healing and for her husband, Red, who spent a short time in the hospital due to breathing problems but is home no. Their daughter, Leann, is a godsend.

We've discovered that Don Anderson, former member of Danebo Circle 8, is at a different rehabilitation center following additional surgery on his foot. He'll be there for a while. We pray that Mimi and Don heal quickly and are both on their feet soon.

Keep on dancin'

The Single Trees Sweetheart of a 52nd birthday dance on February 12th was really terrific, thanks to the busload of Vancouver Happy Hoppers. (Their president, Danny Williamson, did a great job organizing the trip.) We also had visitors from the Sweet Home Squarenaders, the Roseburg Buckaroos, and many from our area clubs as well - definitely too many to name. The potluck turned out to be a big highlight before the dance as we pledged to feed our guests from Vancouver. Our club came through with lots of food, and many others turned up with food in hand to add to the party - the list was long. We had more than one hundred and thirty attendees with at least 12 squares on the floor! We hadn’t seen the hall that full for a very long time.

The Wild Cards did a fantastic job with the harmonizing and solos, and we loved K.C. Curtis who jazzed it up a bit on the harmonica. I knew we were in for a great round dance time when our cuer, Jackie Gale, started it off with “Heard it from the Grapevine.” Everyone had a very great time with the majority staying on the floor until the end. Those cleaning up finally got out of the hall a bit after 11:00 pm. But it was fun - it was worth it - and it deserves a big hurrah!

Kris Jensen, national caller from Albuquerque, was here in early March. It's always a treat to have Kris call for us. Tim Matteson, our caller, get a chance to dance too. Kris's brother, Kurt and his wife, Lorna, are members of Spin Cycle Squares.

Spin Cycle Squares is sponsoring Dan Nordbye, national caller from Mesa, Arizona on April 12, a Tuesday. Pre-Rounds at 7:30 will be cued by Christina Corelli. The mainstream dance with plus tips will run from 8:00 - 10-:30 with Dan. Please plan on joining us for this special dance.

Carol Campbell, who dances with us lost her husband recently. We are all so very sorry. Fred bravely battled cancer. We offered gift cards to their favorite pizza places and will continue to take care of Carol.

We continue to dance all levels from 5:30 - 8:00 most Sundays in Hall A at the hall in Sprngfield. We encourage you to join us. Please call Tim at 541-988-0399 or our president, David at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We rarely go dark, but you never know. We do know that we are dark May 29, Memorial Day weekend.

Our hall has a cushioned wood floor for your dancing ease and pleasure.

Happy dancing!

We had a fun month in February. Our new dancers graduated and joined the club. Graduation was held at our regular dance. Our dance was themed “Famous Couples”. Each dancer received a name tag for a member of a famous couple. Then we found our famous partner and danced a tip with whoever was the other half of that couple! Very cute idea!

Our caller, Leonard Snodgrass, is teaching a Plus Brush-Up class on Thursday nights at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center from 6:30-8 pm. We sometimes have two squares.

We also visited the Hoedowners in Aloha for their 66th Anniversary, preceded by a delicious chicken dinner. 16 dancers went from our club - more than half of our club! What a fun evening! Visiting other clubs is great fun and we hope you'll come visit us. Carmen Rost

Thanks to everyone who attended our dances recently held at the alternate locations. For April, we plan to dance at our usual location, First Congregational Church, Corvallis, on the second and fourth Saturdays. Now that the floor has been refinished and scheduling worked out, we should be able to count on this usual venue for us.

By the time this OFN comes out, we will have had our Coast Retreat the weekend of March 11-13. Highlights include the dancing, of course, and the social time including the group potluck on Saturday at noon. It's not too early to save the second weekend in March for next year's Coast Retreat!

Hello, from IWW. On March 5, we had a fun dance with lots of visitors and look forward to March 12 for our 56th Birthday dance. You can go to the IWW web site and see pictures.

We invite all dancers to come and visit with IWW. Mark your calendars for May 7, 2016. This will be IWW’s Cinco de Mayo dance. Come enjoy the fun and great Mexican food. It is the normal finger food table but with a Mexican theme. It should be great fun, so come join us

The club continues to add songs to our music list that we know how to dance. We are getting more dancing in each week and less teaching other than a pesky step or two that prevents us from doing the entire song.

We have a sign-up sheet for people to run for office and hope that some of the members will step forward and get involved. We are also contemplating increasing the door fee and the membership dues. Some Thursdays, we don’t make enough to cover expenses and that is not good. Come and join us for dancing and friendship.

Our birthday dance in February was well attended. Thank you to everyone who came out to help us celebrate.

We are trying to get out to visit other clubs as much as we can. Our visit to the Valley River Dancers on February 26 brought a wonderful donation for our youth dancers who are going to Canada for competition. Our youth are practicing hard and learning some new styling to add to our display dancing

February was a fun month with lots of special events. We had a Chocolate dance which filled the hall with lots of dancers and a featured a great chocolate fountain. Thank you to Sid and Clara Carter for setting up and manning the fountain.

Also we had a Chinese New Year’s dance with a Chinese Auction. There were lots of great items to bid on and fun was had by all. I guess that "FUN" is The Word for February and there is more to come so join us every first and third Fridays in Albany at the IOOF Hall.

The Valley River Dancers mainstream lessons and A workshops are going gangbusters on Tuesday evenings, but will have a short hiatus later this month while the Dibble Cruisers take off for Hawaii. And, speaking of taking off, our club is proud to have made a generous donation to help the kids take off for the competition in Canada. We challenge other clubs to do the same.

Mark your calendars now for our annual Dance Under the Stars, Friday, July 22, in Newberg.

Willamette Squares held its Valentine square and round dance, including plus dancing at the Salem Square Dance Center on the evening of February 27. We danced the night away with Sandy Harris calling and Sandy Pinion cueing, celebrating all that February holds. Of course, what would a valentine themed dance be without chocolate which was available along with other delicious foods! A lucky few were the recipients of chocolate hearts.

Our Sunday round dance classes continue and prove to be very popular. The class is taught by Ralph Lambert and assisted by Marilyn Schmit.

For the month of March we invite you all to our next regular dance on March 26 titled Eggstravaganza. There will be an Easter egg hunt for all in attendance! Our April dance will consist of our annual Maypole dance.

It has been announced that Summer Festival 2017 will be held in Salem. Our club is encouraged to volunteer to help other MWA clubs with that festival.

The annual summer picnic is currently in the planning stages. We hope to be able to organize one for the upcoming summer. In the meantime, enjoy dancing!

Portland Area Council - Link
Our biggest news flash, in a long time, is the potential sale of the Clark County Square Dance Center. There are square and round clubs across the nation that would sell their club’s soul in order to have such a fine dance facility.

As of OFN press time, the sale is shrouded in a north/south boundary dispute, plus the fact that the county intends to put a road through the south end of the property. But these things will eventually be settled.

The main question is if the square dance community will let this fine facility slip out of its hands, like the Portland Square Dance Center did years ago. It is true that few dances are held at the CCSDC anymore, but the facilities are lauded for its floor, which is on springs and was specifically designed for dancing.

How can you help? Sincerely, the best way is to contact the CCSDC on your willingness to purchase shares that current members may be willing to sell. And then become a member of its board, voting to keep the Center in reserve for the dance community. Whatever happens will be a new chapter for the Vancouver/Portland square dance community.

It’s getting to be spring. I love spring! It’s the season when young men’s hearts turn to “ well whatever they turn to.

And I just love to ask Lotta and Flory for dances. They’re so polite (like the rest of our club) they’d never turn me down for a dance. And, frankly, it’s the only time I can touch them without them having me arrested!

It’s our 51st anniversary this year, and we’ll celebrate April 13, with our usual caller for our anniversary dance, DAN NORDBY from Gilbert, Arizona. It will also be a great time to apply for club membership, to support all our great activities for the year. Membership only $12 a year.

April 27 will be our annual dance with internationally renowned MIKE SIKORSKY from Mesa, Arizona. Be very sure you come early, so that parking attendant Bruce Bruiser doesn’t assign you a parking place in the back 40! If you think we sound tough, we’re really a bunch of pussy cats.

Tami Helms will be cueing all our dances this month.

Greetings from the Buzzin Bees. April showers bring May flowers and our anniversary party. The Bees are celebrating 58 years as a club on April 16th and we will welcome guest caller Terry Halley as he joins K.C. Curtis, calling and Debbie Combs, cuing. We always have great "Bee" theamed door prizes and look forward to welcoming our guests. Come, have a great time and cake.

The Bees have a new name to add to our pie eating winners plaque and the winner is... Hayley Carter. She did a great job eating and wearing that chocolate cream pie!

We started something new, for us, in March. We have always been a mainstream club but some of us felt the need for a challenge so we will start Plus lessons on dance nights. Lessons will be from 6:00 to 7:15. Pre-rounds will go from 7:30 to 8 and the dance starts at 8 p.m. with every third tip Plus once we know enough to do a plus tip. Do you need some plus tune up? How many of you attended a Leap Year dance on February 29th? That 29th day only comes around every four years...even more amazing was it occurred, this 2016 year, on a Monday - the very night that the Floordusters youth club (in Yoder “ that’s South of Canby) dances, SO they hosted a “Leap Day” dance. Two Chaps & Petticoats members attended - the Floordusters were so appreciative they sent us home with our visitation banner, even though we didn’t have but 1/4 of a square. How cool is that?

Our most fun was trying to keep up with the “lively” dancing of those teens. Thank you Tim Kane and Anthony Egan for your energy-filled calling.

Seven Chaps members attended the Silver Knights and Silver Dragon’s fundraiser on March 6, at the Waldo Hills Community Club in Silverton. There were great treats served, a Silent Auction and a challenging exhibition was danced to give us a flavor for the competition that takes place at the Pacific NW Teen Square Dance Festival, this year in Canada. Afterwards their Club Caller, Leonard Snodgrass, completed our square and Don Benson gave us a taste of what the teens have to dance in the competition. Keep Silverton in your prayers, that they might bring home the gold, on May 7, in Canada.

Last year’s Officers with Chaps & Petticoats (C&P) will remain in their current positions and fulfill their second-year term of office. Our Officers are: Betty Chipps (that’s me), President; Tim Kane, V.P.; Lisa Robison, Secretary; Vicki Pounds, Treasurer; and Roberta Elders, PAC Representative. The Chaps and Petticoats appreciate, very much, the dedication of our officers and our Sheriff: Bruce Stahlecker. Please acknowledge their service when you see them in a square.

We’d love to have you join us on Friday, April 1... yep, April Fool’s day, with Scott Zinser calling and Jackie Gale cueing. You can bet there will be a prank (or two). On third Friday, April 15, our dance floor opens with Mike and Julie Stout “ please come dance with us and enjoy the depth of Mike’s singing voice.

We are excited to be the first club to try a collaborative dance with the Portland Area Council. Sunday April 3rd from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, there will be a B-51 level dance at the Boring Barn, co-hosted by PAC and the Country Cut-Ups. Scott Zinser will be calling and Molly Combs will be cueing. We hope to see many of the new students as well as lots of experienced dancers there to support this effort. We really need to support these basic level dances to promote the future of square dancing. Without a place to start dancing, without having to know it all, new dancers can quickly feel excluded. Come on out and have fun!

Speaking of coming out to the Barn, don’t forget the annual Barn Sale, April 8th and 9th. There is always a wide selection of unique items and gently used things. Come and support one of our major fund raisers of the year. For club members, bring in donations up until April 5th, and join us that morning to help set up.

Because of the Barn Sale, our mainstream class will not meet on Thursday, April 7th. It is great to see eager students learning the calls and having fun. Scott Zinser is a great teacher and makes sure everyone has a chance to learn the calls. Angel support is always welcome and needed.

Looking back a little, our club has been out actively visiting other clubs. On 2/19/16, we visited the Silver Stars in Vancouver, WA at their new time slot on fourth Fridays. We had a full square and brought home a banner, with hopes they will come out the Barn to snag it back. Everyone enjoyed the calling of Darrell Kalmbach.

Happy Hoppers - Link
The shareholders of the Clark County Square Dance Center, our home venue, have voted to accept an offer to sell the property and the building to the church across the street. It's not official until the transaction closes, and there are multiple hurdles to get past before that happens. As always, with major changes of this sort, there are lots of different scenarios about what, when and how it's going to happen, and what we ought to do about it. Over time, it will all become clear, but for now it's kind of confusing. There is a general consensus that we will be able to continue using the facility at least until the end of 2016, perhaps even longer.

We had a fantastic visitation on February 12, renting a luxury bus professionally piloted by our fellow Hopper Melissa James, taking us to Springfield for the Single Trees' anniversary dance. The Wild Cards were calling, Jackie Gale was cueing, and there was an unbelievable buffet dinner. A lot of memories were made that night. Our next visitation will be Friday, March 11 to the R Square D's in Kelso. Adam Christman will be calling and Lonnie Sycks will be cueing. We're looking forward to sharing the floor with our friends from the R Square D's.

Wednesday evening, February 24, we had a club dine-out at Gustav's restaurant on 164th Street. 27 members attended.

Our semi-annual clothing sale took place on the evening of February 29, at the same time as our lesson sessions. This is an important fund-raising activity for the Hoppers. We made $737.00.

We will host our regular first and third Saturday dances at the Clark County Square Dance Center with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. The April 2 agenda will include the election of club officers. On April 16 will be our annual Ice Cream Social Dance. Don't miss that one!

We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. We encourage beginning dancers to start introductory lessons on the first Monday of every month at 7:30. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00.

"The Oaky Doaks are trying something new this month. Join us on Saturday, April 2 and add a dangle to your jangle to commemorate our special April Fool's Fun Dance. Caller MC Mike Halley will welcome callers from the floor for whacky variations on the square dance theme - like SqRounds, Blindfolded, Ghost Dancing, and Rubber Chickens. All singing calls.

Our mainstream class is going extremely well. We have great students and the angels are keeping the fun level up while helping them learn. We’ll introduce them to the larger square dance community at a Beginners’ Jamboree/Dance Attire Resale on Thursday, April 14th from 7:30 “ 9:30pm at the Oak Grove Community Hall. River City Dancers - Link
Way back when my husband, Leonard and I were newby square dancers (around 1975 or 1976), we ventured out by ourselves on our first couple of visitations from our home club, which at the time was the “Oregon Trailers”. We were guided by a courtesy copy of the OFN. (At that time, there were many more clubs than there are now…for instance, there were two other clubs using our current hall, Milwaukie Community Center on SE 42nd and Jackson, Milwaukie.

It seemed to us that square dancing was not well organized then, so you knew what was being called. It was easy to drop into a club that was dancing at a Plus level, and we were barely functioning at what we now call B-51. After suffering a few withering frowns as we stumbled through calls like “teacup chain”, we became more proficient at chosing our nights out, as well as our callers.

I write my River City Dancers column this month praising those clubs who encourage their new dancers to visit other dances besides jamborees, both as a group, and as individuals. If your teacher caller is very good, it is all the more important that your new dancers hear other dictions, other styles, other music, other jokes (if your caller includes them into his/her program).

During our first jamboree, it seemed that most of the callers had mush in their mouths. Our ears weren’t trainer to other voices yet, and it didn’t help, that the sound system was pretty bad.

Our Visitation Chairmen for the last several years at River City has been Carol Mendenhall and her partner, Gene Meyers. During announcements at break, they invent some cute “come-ons” to attract attention and make the visitation more intriguing. They might chose something major, such as Winter Festival, or an individual dance, like our recent visit to Valley Squares. Carol and Gene distribute maps and ask that you sign a list so they can report how many of us are expecting to go, as a courtesy to our hosts, who can then prepare for us.

(One dance, many years ago, we visited a little town up the Gorge. We arrived with two busloads. We had no idea that our dates had been mixed up. The women of the club suddenly disappeared while the men kept dancing with us. I don’t remember what the women hustled up when they came back, but it was a wonderful dance…with good food, even.)

When our club, River City Dancers, chose our dance nights to be second and third Saturdays of each month, it seemed to fit evey possible club’s schedule. So far, it seems to be working. We dance all summer, but occasionally Oregon Summer Festival falls on our regular dance night, in which case, we almost always cancel.

Our club is looking forward to other future “big” events. It’s time to buy Washington State Summer Festival ribbons Jun 17 & 18th in Longview; and Seaside Beach Party Summer Festival, July 29-31 at Seaside, Oregon. And then, of course, there’s always Winter Festival, 2017! We love to look forward to these special events.

The Ramblers March dance featured a Get Lucky! theme in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. We were pleased to welcome visitors from Floor Dusters and Chaps and Petticoats. Luck ruled the evening as caller Kris Jensen from Albuquerque energized the dance floor with challenging, fast-paced tips and a varied musical selection. Kris does a fabulous job of identifying the level of dancers on the floor, so her dances are challenging but not to the point of breaking down squares. Kris usually calls for the Ramblers once or twice a year”watch for her next appearance, and join us for a dance. You will not be disappointed!

In April, Gary Monday will be venturing down from Seattle to call for us on April 2. Gary is a rising star among national callers”known for his crisp and clear choreography and diverse music choices. It’s a real treat to be able to dance with him. We’ll be dancing from 7-9 p.m. at the Milwaukie Grange. Singles and couples are welcome.

For those like to plan ahead, mark your calendars for our annual three-day square dance extravaganza. This year, we will be dancing October 28-30 at the Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capitol Highway, Multnomah Village, Portland 97219.

Columbia River Dancers - Link
As winter tries to hold on and spring is trying to spring, the Columbia River Dancers are starting our second year. We have scheduled the Hazel Dell Grange for the summer and are planning NOT to be dark. We will continue to have dances every second and fourth Saturday. There will be some opportunities for us to visit and get a few of our banners and shirts back as well. On the 9th of April we will have Scott Zinser as our guest caller and on the 23rd Randy Dibble will keep us twirling.

Many of the CRD's went to Springfield to dance the night away there on February 12th and help the Toe Draggers celebrate their anniversary. They all came home sleepy, full of good potluck food and eager to go again. Your reporter got sick and missed a great time. Darn.

Growth is good and we are holding our own. We have seen a few younger dancers out and would like to encourage them. I understand there is an effort to get a teen group going in the Portland area and we will assist any way we can. We are known as a family club. I always say the family that squares together has a lot of fun.

Our beginner lessons start the first Tuesday of each month. A Beginner Two class will be right after the beginner class. Jim Hattrick taught a beginning waltz round dance the first Tuesday of March before square dance class.

Lastly, if any clubs are finishing their beginning square dance classes, there may be an opportunity to dance at B-51 level on a Tuesday night in early May. If there is interest in such an event, please let the Columbia River Dancers know and we will see if we can arrange something.

Eager Beavers - Link
All dancers are invited, Mainstream and above, to the Eager Beavers Anniversary Dance. Dance to amazing callers, Jim Hattrick, Daryl Clendenin, and Darrell Kalmbach, with cuers Jim Hattrick, Yvonne Clendenin, and Joyce Hooper. This promises to be a fantastic dance for mainstream and a few plus tips. To make it even better there is delicious chicken dinner (to start about 3:15 - 3:30) after the dance. Enjoy food and fun for only $6. Plan to join us Sunday, April 24, 1 - 4 pm, Hillsboro IOOF Hall. See flyer section of OFN

Almost everyone wore something red to our Valentine Dance. Thanks to Mike, Marie & Lane who coordinated the event. Our lottery election of King and Queen of Hearts can produce some surprising results. This year we Crowned Lane Clem and Nan Overall and as King and Queen. They were presented with a heart shaped box of chocolates.

We are very excited to have welcomed twelve students for our first Plus lessons on February 15th. A couple told me they came because of the reputation of the instructors and the fact they were dancing with club members. It is a joy to have these enthusiastic dancers join us. Lessons start at noon and students may stay until 2 pm to practice.

Our visitation to the Hoedowners Anniversary Dance in February at the Aloha Grange provided us a great dance and opportunity to meet up with old friends. We had twenty one members attend the Hoedowners’ sixty-sixth anniversary complete with a chicken dinner.

For summer fun, plan to attend Summer Festival in Seaside July 29th through 31st with Andy Allemao calling and Dave Cooper cueing. Check with Ferrous & Karen or Lane & Marie for registration and ribbons.

We dance on holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons: Rounds 1:00 - 1:30 (Rounds will start at 1:15 during lessons); Plus 1:30 - 3:15 PM, Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. We dance on holidays too so if you have a day off come join us. Our next holiday dance that will be at Aloha Grange is on Memorial Day, May 30th.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

Hoedowners - Link
The Hoedowners had a busy and “love”ly month in February. Our Queen of Hearts dance was held on February 13th. The coronation revealed David Boultinghouse as King and Barb Stehlik as Queen of Hearts. Richard Lane joined Daryl on stage to harmonize for all the dancers and romancers.

On February 19th, we had a visitation to the Tri-Squares’ Mardi-Gras Dance and had a blast. One of our members, whose initials are DC, won the $100 grand prize. Can you guess who that might be? Thanks Tri-Squares for another memorable evening.

February 24th was our New Dancer Graduation and Annual Meeting Potluck. As usual, the buffet table was laden with an amazing variety of scrumptious food. Thanks all around to our wonderful member-chefs! We awarded 15 graduation certificates and dangles, two with perfect attendance. Also enjoying recognition were two Angels, Chet Wolter and Glenda Bray, who never missed a class. Bravo! After dinner we adjourned upstairs for a few tips before everyone departed.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner! If you were at the Aloha Grange February 27th, you were a winner who helped Hoedowners celebrate their 66th Anniversary with a dance and chicken dinner. Oh my gosh, we had to set up two additional tables to accommodate the diners and we enjoyed doing it. Fried chicken, baked chicken, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, mac and cheese and cake, you would have thought it was a celebration, and it was. 66 years of dancing, friendships, hilarity, eating, games, travels, parties and sharing our lives with wonderful people. The ballroom was bedecked in vintage club outfits as an amazing crowd of 101 people joined us, including visitations from Valley Squares, Sunset Promenaders and Braids and Braves. With that kind of crowd we were pleased to have Chuck Garner and Richard Lane joining Daryl on stage to keep everyone dancing.

In April we’ll hold a Denim and Diamonds Dance on the 9th. Check your wardrobe and get ready to sparkle. On the 23rd of April we’ll have our Come One, Come All Circus Dance. It’s always a favorite; clowns and other circus performers are always welcome. Please leave your elephants and tigers at home.

We enjoy greeting the newer dancers who have been joining us in our squares, as well as our regulars and those who haven't been with us for a while.

On June 4th, former SOS (Singles on Saturday) members plan to gather at the Winona Grange about 6:00 p.m. for an hour of reunion. Those who still dance will likely stay for our dance. Since Randy Dibble will be elsewhere that night, Darrell Kalmbach will fill in for him.

That will lead into our summer special events dances, our Red, White, and Blue dance July 2nd, our Root Beer Float Dance August 6th, and our Watermelon Dance September 17th. If you ever want to check if there has been a last minute change, go to our website for the latest news.

R Square D - Link
R Square D danced on February 12th, celebrating Valentine's Day. The floor was a sea of red as many were dressing for the occasion with red shirts and skirts. This dance was attended by members of Cougar Squares, Ruff & Ruffles, and Tillamook Wave Steppers. Sandy Sims' sister from Connecticut visited us for the evening. She is a non square dancer, but enjoyed the evening watching the dancers and chatting with one and all. Dancing in the rain was the theme for our February 27th dance. Umbrellas were abundant, one square tried to dance holding umbrellas. Prior to the dance the members enjoyed a pancake feed. Craig Abercrombie called and Lonnie Sycks cued for both of these dances.

On April 8th R Square D will be celebrating their 63rd Anniversary. Craig Abercrombie will be calling and Lonnie Sycks will be cueing. Come help us celebrate our anniversary! On the 23rd Scott Koons will be calling and Lonnie Sycks will be cueing for our 50's and 60's dance. Scott is a great caller and Elvis impersonator. This is a dance that you won't want to miss.

Here's hoping April showers bring May flowers.

Sunset Promenaders - Link
The Sunset Promenaders were very happy to have so many visitors at our February 6th dance; we had visitors from River City Dancers, Silver City Dancers, Toe Draggers, and others with a total of six squares. We really do appreciate visitors coming to our dances; it makes it a lot of fun.

Our Mainstream lessons are continuing, the students are doing well, and we have lots of good “angels’ help. Thank you dancers for coming out and helping the students. About half of our students went to a jamboree at the Valley Squares and had a good time with other students from the around the Portland area.

Starting on April 2nd our dance format will change to one hour of Plus with Intermediate Rounds starting at 7:00 until 8:00 and then Mainstream dance from 8:00 until 10:00 with Mike Stout calling and Ken Pratt cueing, except the 2nd Julie Stout will be cueing as Ken will be on vacation.

The Promenaders Plus Dances, featuring Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt are held on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursdays and are continuing with a good turnout of dancers. The dances, at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro, are from 7:00 until 9:30 with a break afterwards.

I guess we need to be thankful for our wet and windy winter, with hopes Spring is just around the corner. We have kept ourselves busy, dancing through March. We were given a pot of gold, with the friendships of our new club members, from mainstream lessons.

Our round dance lessons have been going smoothly and we worked hard learning the 2 step and now have moved on to the waltz. Through April, feel free to stop by and join us as a new round dancer or brush up dancer. Our lessons are on Sunday afternoons at the Kinton Grange starting at 2 P.M.

Our Rub a Dub Ducky dance was a blast. We honored Tom Gray with his collection of ducks of all sizes, with decorations and costumes. He is quite a collector. Tom always brings his largest duck (fits in the bed of his pickup to our campout in August and uses it as a night light for the campers).

Our April 1st dance will be held at the Odd Fellow Hall in Hillsboro, because our grange is busy with their annual bazaar. It’s a great one to stop by at the Kinton Grange, first weekend of April and see if you might find a gift for yourself or a friend. April is our donation month to bring animal blankets, toys and pet food to the dances. All items will be donated to the Oregon Humane Society. April 15th dance has the title of Raining Cats and Dogs so we will remember to help out our 4 footed friends. We’ll be back to our own grange for this dance.

We are looking forward to our Mystery Trip coming up soon. It always brings a fun surprise to all that attend.

The Toes wanted to send good well wishes to Bill Hults for a quick recovery after his surgery. Peggy and Bill are missed on the dance floor. Two of our favorites. See you in a square.

Raise your umbrellas, splash through those puddles in your galoshes, and change into your dancing shoes for our April Showers Dance April 2nd. Two weeks later, drive your Italian sports cars to our Italian Theme Dance April 16th. Some tasty Italian dishes will await you at our Open Break.

We tried something new at our Valley Squares 3rd Saturday Winter Wonderland Dance in February. Instead of dancing Plus from 7-8, we had a student level dance. Tips got progressively more sophisticated, and the evening ended with an hour of Plus. Even though our students were only in their 5th week of lessons, they did themselves proud. We were joined by students and new dancers from Hoedowners, Sunset Promenaders, Rosetown Ramblers, and Tualatin Timbers, making a total of 9 squares. Everyone had a marvelous time, and the energy was fantastic. Students and new dancers want to dance as soon and as often as possible, so Valley Squares are considering whether to add this opportunity to our schedule on a regular basis. We encourage other clubs to try something similar and let us know what you learn and think. Please let your students and new dancers know about any opportunity to dance and thus strengthen their skills and build a stronger network of square dance fans throughout Oregon.

Our Soup-er Bowl Dance had so many tasty soups - about 8 different varieties to warm tummies on a dark and rainy winter evening. Joy Choy created a football field for the buffet table, and fun football themed decorations put people into a rah-rah mood.

Thanks so much to everyone who has supported our students by helping out at lessons and dancing with us on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays. To steal from Southwest Airlines, we realize there are many choices on these Saturdays. Thanks for choosing Valley Squares.

February was a busy month for the Buckeroos! We started out the month with our Sweetheart dance called by Chuck Simpkins. We had a nice turnout and everyone enjoyed the fun evening. The decorations were beautiful and the evening reminded us all to treasure good friends.

Mid-month we had a visitation to the Single Trees in Springfield. We enjoyed dancing to the Wild Cards and getting to visit with the busload of visitors that drove down from Portland for the dance. It was so much fun to see the floor filled with dancers having a good time!

Roger Putzler called our second dance of the month. Since February was National Heart Health month, we celebrated by dancing the night away. We all enjoyed being able to exercise and still have a great time.

At the end of the month, we had 26 dancers head down to Medford for the Caller/Cuer Jamboree. It was held at the Star Promenaders Dance Hall and everyone had a super time. In fact, 19 of our 26 dancers had the opportunity to earn their purple heart dangle!

Happy dancing!
