A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs
Printed 21 May 2016
President's Corner
As you may have heard, the Oregon Federation is the recipient of a
large inheritance from Susan Corbett. Susan was a long time dancer in
the singles community. She specifically liked Advanced and higher level
rounds. She was surrounded by her square dance friends during her battle
with cancer.
The amount of the inheritance is $75,000. There is much we can do with this unexpected windfall.
I personally would like to see the money evenly distributed to the clubs
in the Federation.
We welcome your input as to how you would like to see this money
used. Contact any of the Federation Board or your Council Delegate to
give your input. We will be discussing this at the May 15 meeting in
the Blue Mountains council.
Kay and Jim Rogers, OFSRDC President
Editor's Note
The Federation's quarterly meeting will be held in La Grande this
month. Be thinking of your officers as they gather to help keep
our activity vital.
The June issue of the OFN will be delayed a few days, as your
faithful editor and his wife will be on a boat trip outside of
Internet range. We get so accustomed to 24/7 connectedness
that it will be interesting to see whether I suffer
withdrawals.
Click here to find out how to get your
information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers,
advertisements, and caller/cuer information.
We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of
the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN.

Our club is making the transition from having two dances a month to just one starting this September. Our dances starting in the fall will be the third Saturday of each month. We are always dark in July, but that may change as well. So, starting this September come and dance with us the third Saturdays.
Our current president, Randy Graboyes, has graciously agreed to continue as president for the coming dance season. Pat Preston, who had agreed to run for president, had to step down as she is undergoing cancer treatments again. We keep Pat in our thoughts and pray she is able to beat cancer once again.
We wish to thank the following new officers: Randy Graboyes, president, Rosco Isbell, Vice-President, Tonie Nichols, Treasurer and Dianne Trippett, Secretary. Betty Aukerman continues to be our 'Sunshine Lady' sending birthday cards, anniversary cards, sympathy cards and get well cards to our members.
Lifetime member, Mimi Mills, is home following several weeks in rehab. Mimi did so much for the club and the hall the past 25 years. It's taking more than one person to do what Mimi did all by herself. We love you Mimi! Thank you!
Come dance with us the first and third Saturdays. We are dark May 21st. The cloggers have a mini-convention at the hall that weekend which sounds like a lot of fun. We will be dancing June and August and are dark in July.
Christina will have a round dance party May 14th, the second Saturday at the hall from 7 - 9:30 p.m.

March 11th was our "Go Green" dance with caller Jim Hattrick. We had a good turnout (5 squares) and Jim really delivered. It was so good to have him call for us once again and we thanked all our visitors for joining us. Jim Voll pulled off another good dance on March 26th, and we had a pretty good group of dancers as well. But in the Emerald Area one of the many terrific dances that we support and attend is the Emerald Empire Council Dance - which is a benefit dance for the Honor Flight. Since it is on April 30th, we will have already attended it by the time you read this, but next month (the June issue) we'll give you all the particulars on what went on, how much money was raised by the silent auction, and how the dancers loved all the callers and cuers.
On April 8th, we had a great dance with with KC Curtis calling and Jackie Gale cueing our "Spring Fling." On April 22nd, Chuck Garner will be calling and Christinia Corelli will be cueing. We are looking forward to a fun time and hope some of you will join us.

Carol Campbell, who dances with us lost her husband recently. We are all so very sorry. Fred bravely battled cancer. We offered gift cards to their favorite pizza places and will continue to take care of Carol. Several of us plan to attend a gathering for Fred on April 23 to support Carol and her family.
We encourage our members to run for office for the 2016-2017 dance season. Tim Matteson offered to continue being our delegate at the hall meetings. Thanks Tim!
By now the Dan Nordbye dance, April 12, will have happened. Dan is such a good caller whose program changes each year. His dances are always interesting and a heck of a lot of FUN! We look forward to Dan coming back in 2017! Dan loves to go to breakfast with some of us at Brail's the morning after. Dan always stays with Christina and Kirby and Meko, the cat.
We continue to dance all levels from 5:30 - 8:00 most Sundays in Hall A at the hall in Sprngfield. We encourage you to join us. Please call Tim at 541-988-0399 or our president, David at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We rarely go dark, but you never know. We do know that we are dark May 29th, Memorial Day weekend.
Our hall has a cushioned wood floor for your dancing ease and pleasure.

A big Thank You goes out to the dancers who supported the MWA Spring Dance on April 3, hosted by the Braids and Braves. We had four squares on the floor most of the afternoon. Leonard Snodgrass was the caller MC and Sandra Pinion was the cuer MC for the event, supported by other MWA callers and cuers. The youth from Silver City Squares were presented a check from the MWA to help them attend the competition in May.

What a great 55th Anniversary Dance we had on March 19! Four squares were on the floor and more people were visiting on the benches. Our Silent Auction went very well and we enjoyed seeing some former members. We had visitors from Salem Swinging Stars, Timber Twirlers, Independence Wagon Wheelers and several independents. The Wagon Wheelers took home one of their banners. Our great caller, Leonard Snodgrass, called another lively, fun dance and Sandra Pinion did her sparkling job of cueing Rounds. Bruce Lowther also called a tip and Judy Russell cued a set of Rounds. Thanks to all our hard-working club members and the visitors who came to celebrate with us. We always look forward to seeing guests come dance with us. Carmen Rost
We had two great dances in April, one with national caller Dan Nordbye on April 9. We are having a great year as our dances are being well attended with at least four to five squares per dance. We are having fun!
We have some great things coming in May. Saturday May 7 will be our “Cinco De Mayo Dance”. This is going to be a great dance. We will have Pinata’s, games, and Mexican food. George Hermann will be calling and Ralph Lambert will be cueing. Come and share the fun. We welcome all dancers. We will have pre rounds at 7:30 and Mainstream dancing from 8:00-10:30 P.M. We look forward to seeing everyone. Look for the flyer in the OFN.
IWW also has an AED available for sale. If your club is interested in having a defibrillator, contact Joni O’brien, our club president. This AED has never been used. You can contact Joni at jobrien58@msn.com or 503-623-8353. See you in a square. Sandy Eddings

Our big celebration is coming up the first weekend of June with our STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL AND CAMPOUT -- June 3 - 5, 2016. There will be a Trails End Dance on Friday night with callers from the floor. Potlucks every night, our big Festival dance on Saturday night with Randy Dibble calling and Jackie Gale cueing; and breakfast on Sunday morning. A great weekend is planned and we hope to see you all there. We have a super silent auction and experienced clothing sale to add to the festivities. The club continues to review various rhythms through the end of April during our lesson time. May 5 we will start Tango lessons at 7:30. If you are ready to start your adventure into the intermediate level of round dancing, then come and join us for Tango from the start. We are encouraging those who are ready to move to the next level to try it out and see how you do. We are ready to assist you in success.
The club has voted for state officers and club officers, and we are working on plans for our 40th birthday party in June. Save the date of June 16 and join us as we come together to celebrate the fact that the club is still going after 40 years. A lot of clubs have folded in that time.
Stay tuned for guest cuers as Cheryl and Geof take time to attend ICBDA, USA West, and a round dance weekend at Circle 8 in Cle Elum, WA. Our club vice president is working on getting a guest cuer to come in and tame the bunch of us. It worked last year and will again this year. See you soon. Marilyn Schmit

Our youth had their fundraiser dance and it brought in close to $800. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our youth. We had a lot of fun. Our raffle winners were: Cherrie Hutchison, Richard Buchheit and Tiffin Sinks. Congratulations! Our youth have been working hard at practices and we are working on some fancy choreography for the endings of the songs that our callers will do for competition. Throughout the month, we have been getting lots of support and we are very grateful for all of the help that will allow us go up to competition.

March was a fun month with our annual Irish Potato dance. We had lots of wearing of the green and lots of baked potatoes with all the trimmings. Thanks to Susan and Allan Jackson for cooking all of those. We even had lots left over for guest to take home.
April 1st we had our April Foolish dance and some interesting clothes were worn but the dancers and caller/cuer. We will be having our Birthday dance April 17 at the Eagles in Albany and that should be a great time. See our flyer in the OFN.
In May will see two dances, on May 5 and on May 20. The dance on the 20th will be a dancer appreciation dance with our Sundaes on Friday dance. Yum! It will also be a benefit dance for the IOOF Hall to try and make repairs on our parking lot (it is in bad need of it). Willamette Squares held their regular dance with the Easter theme, Eggstravaganza! Easter eggs were hidden all around the Square Dance Center, and everyone was encouraged to hunt for eggs in between tips and rounds. If you discovered the whereabouts of an egg, you were rewarded with prizes which were inside the plastic eggs. If you were lucky, you got chocolate! The refreshment table was laden with egg dishes: for eggsample, deviled eggs, quiche, and egg salad sandwiches. Everyone had an eggscellent time dancing! Hopefully everyone wasn't too eggshausted from all the fun to celebrate Easter the next day. Dancing with Willamette Squares is eggsactly where dancers can be every 4th Saturday evening at the Salem Square Dance Center! Jodee Howard

We have another month reprieve in which we can save the Clark County Square Dance Center from being sold. This is a facility for which many clubs across the continent would mortgage their souls to own. “ One of the few facilities actually built as a dance hall, with the floor mounted on springs.
To keep this wonderful facility in our possession, we need volunteers to buy up the existing shares from other elderly people who are retiring and need the money to live on. Then serve on the voting board of the corporation.
Not only may you save a revered dance facility, but you may also make a lot of money, knowing how real estate prices are increasing. Lastly, it would be a shame to lose this fine facility due to apathy.

Greetings from the Buzzin' Bees. It is hard to believe that I am writing for the May edition already. We have had 3 Plus lessons for our club and we are enjoying the change in format with our Workshop dance as our first Saturday dance of the month. It works well for K.C. to have a chance to clean up our bad habits and make us better dancers and I, for one, am enjoying his harmonica. If you need a tune up in your dancing, come join us the first Saturday of the month. Dress is casual. Plus lessons start at 6:00, pre - rounds at 7:30 and Mainstream at 8pm.
We will be getting Patriotic on 5/21/16 In preparation for Memorial Day so come and wear your red white and blue. We will have just 1 dance in June on 6/4 and it will be our annual end of the season BBQ with a Wild West theme. More information next month along with our new officers. Enjoy your spring.

The prospects for the future of the Clark County Square Dance Center, our home venue, are becoming much harder to evaluate. In February, the church across the street offered to buy the property and the shareholders voted to accept their offer. In the meantime, surveyors discovered that the fence to the south, which had been assumed to be on the boundary line for many years, is actually 12 feet onto the CCSDC property. That means that 12 feet of the property may be lost to the southern neighbor due to what's called "adverse possession". Because of the same surveying discrepancy, much of the north parking lot which we've been using all these years actually belongs to the neighbor to the north. Therefore, the property which was put up for sale is potentially smaller than it was thought to be. In the meantime, the church has asked for an extra 90 days to realign their finances for the purchase. So, things are up in the air. Negotiations are on-going. It's all very complicated. Come back next month. Maybe I'll have more to tell you.
We will host our regular first and third Saturday dances at the Clark County Square Dance Center with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. The May 7 dance will be our annual anniversary dance with the theme of "A Hawaiian Beach Party". As part of our on-going effort to accommodate Mainstream dancers, this special dance will feature Mainstream calling on every third tip.
Our lessons are "dark" for the summer season, to resume in September. We had a wonderful season since September, welcoming 104 new dancers. Counting students and angels, our attendance averaged 60 per week.

We are blessed in the Portland/Vancouver Metro area and beyond...in the entire Pacific Northwest…by the fabulous talents of many excellent callers and cuers. Our club, River City Dancers, has been among the luckiest groups to enjoy a very special caller couple, Les and Paula Seeley, and cuer, Tami Helms and Tim Keck.
When Les calls, he puts everything into it. We know there have been times when he wasn’t feeling all that well…but us dancers wouldn’t have known it. Les and Paula have been extremely dedicated over these many years. I don’t think we show our appreciation enough, so I’m using this small space right now to say, “THANK YOU! THANK YOU!”.
At our first March dance for River City Dancers, with Les and Paula Seeley enjoying a short sabbatical, we were visited by three super callers.
Mike and Julie Stout called and cued; then KC Curtis, as well as our “advertised” caller, Daryl Kalmbach. It was a wonderful evening.
As if my feet and legs weren’t already worn out, the next afternoon, my partner, Rocky Curtis and I went to the River City Riders’ fundraising dance at Abernethy Grange, featuring Jim Hattrick and Adam Christman. It was another unparalleled dance; a far better way to spend a stormy afternoon than staying home, or even going shopping! Ha! Ha!
Rene’ and Gary Ruud were billed as the caller for our next dance, but we learned Rene’ had a fractured foot, so another great caller replaced her, Daryl Clendenin, with his wife, Yvonne.
How lucky can we be? Even better, our “established callers” are mentoring new generations of callers and cuers. I’m thinking of how Les helped KC Curtis as well as Rene’ and others. Then there’s Jim Hattrick, who has worked with Adam Christman to the point I must say they sound very much alike. What a fabulous duo! Then there’s Mike Kious, who has his well-known caller Grandfather, George Herman, supporting him. Anthony Egan is another rising star to watch. Best of all, he is becoming involved in the PAC end of our dancing organization.
If Square Dancing is going to remain viable, fun, and successful, we all must “angel” to the extent of our time, commitment and capabilities. It goes far beyond participating in a square.
Let the “beat” go on!

There were big doings at the Ramblers’ April dance at the Milwaukie Grange. Before we hit the hardwood, we held our annual membership meeting. We elected a new Board, consisting of:
President: Jeff Knapp
Vice President: Ariel Shattan
Treasurer: Ken Vannice
Secretary: Jan Thompson
Caller Liaison: Rick Hawes
Member at Large: Tiffany Naemura
Member at Large: Clint Maurice
Class Representative: Joanna Schaefer
Our membership also voted to make important changes to our dance schedule. Starting in September 2016, the Ramblers will move our monthly dances to the second Saturday of each month. In looking at the schedules of other clubs in the Portland area, we noted that many clubs dance the first and third Saturdays (as do the Ramblers). By moving to the second Saturday, we hope our members will have more opportunities to visit other clubs…and that members of other clubs will come visit us. Will we see you in September???
The second schedule change involves moving our dance start time from 7 to 7:30 pm. This change, which was necessitated by a scheduling conflict at the Milwaukie Grange, will take effect starting in May 2016. So, until further notice, our monthly dances will alternate Mainstream and Plus tips from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.
After all of that intense noodling on administrative matters, we needed to get down to the real business of the club, dancing up a storm to the high-speed high jinks of caller Gary Monday from Seattle. He did his usual stellar job of calling for us.
Our next monthly dance will be May 7 at the Milwaukie Grange. Professor Ian Craig will be calling, as our square dance scholars celebrate their Mainstream graduation.
We’ll close out our dance year on June 4, with Don Wood calling. The Ramblers are dark in July and August, but Ramblers roam, and we may just turn up at a dance near you!

Wow, what a March. The month came in like a lion both weather-wise and dance-wise. The club celebrated its first anniversary with its "Blue and Green" dance with Adam Christman calling to eight squares. We had lots of round dancers there as well. Cake, punch, good friends, and lots of blue and green goodies and decorations made the evening all the more enjoyable.
This was followed by Randy Dibble on the 26th keeping us on our toes and challenging us to the max. We had 7 squares in attendance and 5 to 6 squares on the floor all night long. Our Guest Cuer, Debbie Combs, played a wonderful mix of old and new tunes. It was great to have so many round dancers with us.
May will bring us flowers, longer days, and more dancing. On the 14th of May, wear your flowery outfit and join us. Remember, we dance Plus from 7:00 to 8:00 pm and Mainstream from 8:00 on. On the 28th, our amazing Caller, Jim Hattrick, will be calling and cueing our dance.
Our last set of Beginner lessons began on Tuesday, 4/5.
Just as a reminder, we will NOT be going dark during the summer so keep your skills sharp and be sure to join us at the Hazel Dell Grange.

March was a good month for our Plus Classes. Our students are progressing nicely and we are looking forward to dancing with these remarkable dancers. Do they come for the excellent instructors or the snacks the members bring in for all to enjoy? Our members have been excellent signing up and bringing in the goodies which all of us enjoy. Thank You for doing such a great job!
Hoedowners held their annual Trophy Dance and we almost won the trophy. We were 0.5% short! We only needed one more to show up. We will win next year, for sure.
We had a good group and a great time attending the Valley Squares 67th Anniversary Dance on the 19th. Sixty seven years is amazing. Congratulations to Valley Squares!
St. Patrick’s Day was observed by wearing a bit of green and dancing to Irish music.
For summer fun, plan to attend Summer Festival in Seaside from July 29th-31st.
Warning! On Memorial Day, May 30th, we will dance at the Aloha Grange, 185th Ave. and TV Highway. Sunset Presbyterian Church will be closed that day.
We dance on holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons: Rounds 1:00 - 1:30 (Rounds will start at 1:15 during lessons); Plus 1:30 - 3:15 PM, Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. We dance on holidays too so if you have a day off come join us. Our next holiday dance that will be at Aloha Grange is on Memorial Day, May 30th.

March 12th was our Trophy/Stache Bash Dance. What’s that you say? Heck, we were celebrating the all American hirsute tradition of the Mustache!! Frankly, we Hoedowners had become accustomed to all the cookie dusters and soup strainers that male members were already sporting. A few, namely Chet Wolter and Mike Duyck, joined the fray by growing lip rugs for the occasion and just to keep it fair, temporary lipholstery was available for all participants (the things you can’t find at the Dollar Store). Didn’t the ladies look lovely? Richard Lane was our guest caller, mustached as usual, and energized the evening. Chuck Garner joined Richard on stage to call a tip. Hmmm, Chuck wears a mustache too. Is there some kind of theme going here? The Valley Squares organized a visitation to our Trophy Dance as did the Eager Beavers. It was a close race with the Valley Squares beating out the Eager Beavers by 0.5%. Valley Squares reclaimed the Trophy so watch their schedule for an opportunity for your club to take the Trophy home. Once again the Aloha Grange is making improvements to the facility. In March they added sound dampening panels to the dining room and ballroom. Come join us and you’ll notice the difference.
Our Spring Fling dance was the 26th. It was the night before Easter and the large group of dancers seemed to be in a spring mood. I didn’t notice the Easter Bunny but Daryl served up Hot Hash at the end of the evening. Does hash go with deviled eggs? I prefer ham. Thanks to everyone who joined us.
Don’t forget our Fiesta Dance will be May 14th followed on May 28th by our annual celebration of that grand American tradition; our Red, White and Blue Dance.
R Square D had a dance the color of springtime, green, green, green. On March 11th the festive St. Patrick’s Day skirts and shirts came out of the closet for a Luck of the Irish dance at the Catlin Hall in Kelso. The visiting club of Happy Hoppers took home a much deserved traveling banner. Thank you to Adam Christman for being our guest caller while Craig is away.
R Square D also wants to thank caller Jim Raupp for taking on the lessons during Craig's absence.
The monthly meeting was held at the hall with new officers elected; President - Vic Roberts, Vice President - Sharon Giles, Secretary - Chris Poole and Treasurer - Pat Faires. Congratulations to all. Thank you to our meeting hosts, Marvin and Barbara Wilburn.
May 13th finds the club sporting the bright colors of a Fiesta De Mayo Dance with Taco bar served before the dance at 6:00. Please come and join in the fun. Saturday May 28th is Memorial Day weekend and we will be dark.

We have what we consider big news; we have changed our dance format to start the dance with plus level dance from 7:00 to 8:00 including intermediate rounds; and then 8:00 to 10:00 is mainstream dance level with phase two rounds.
On March 12th we had a visitation to the River City Dancers with a good turnout of our club members.
We went dark on March 19th so the club could attended the Valley Squares 67th Anniversary Dance, and we had more than two squares of dancers attend. It was a great dance with Chuck Garner and Randy Dibble calling and Connie Clark cueing. Our caller Mike Stout called with Julie Stout and Ken Pratt cueing a tip too. It was a fun dance with a full dance floor and dancers from many clubs attending.
Our May 7th dance theme will be “Cinco de Mayo” dance with Darrell Kalmbach calling as our club caller Mike is on vacation, and Ken Pratt cueing.
May 21st dance will be Mike Stout calling and Ken Pratt cueing.
Our Promenaders Plus dances are May 5th and May 19th with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Ken Pratt cueing.
We really appreciate visitors, please come dance with us, and we will come dance with you, too. It is more fun when we have a full dance floor both dancing and socially wise.

I hope you had a great first day of spring. We welcomed in spring by dancing up a storm to gather and donate animal blankets, food and toys to the Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter. Our special cuer, Bev Flint, and her husband Harlan are giving the club an extra night of just round dancing so we can practice, practice and practice some more. They are so good to us.
We have nominated and voted in our new officers for the coming year. They’ll be taking over their responsibilities June 1st, 2016. The Toes want to thank our current officers. They have worked extra hard for our club this year and we appreciate them.
Hope you received May flowers on May Day. We are loving this time of the year.
Dig out your crazy hat and racing gear for our May 6th dance. It’s our Ready Set Go - Let’s Race Dance. May 20th is a regular dance. Think the Toes can be regular? Knowing us, something will turn up to make you smile.
We found out our Mystery trip is May 14th and we always look forward to a fun night with great friends. Our fun caller KC with his wife Linda are planning it. Now they can get back at us for all the sillies that we have done to them over the years. See you in a square.

We are having our May Flowers dance on May 7th. Flowers make me smile and it is so reassuring to see their cheery colors and faces after the rainy, gloomy days of winter and early spring.
On May 21st we invite you to put on your scuba suits, masks, and flippers and sink on down to the Aloha Grange floor at our Dancing Under the Sea Dance, in honor of National Maritime Day. Okay, regular comfy attire would be fine. Dancing in scuba gear would be quite a challenge.
We have a new format at each of these dances, with New Dancer level from 7-8, Mainstream from 8-9, and Plus, 9-10, with Open Break in the Quilt Room throughout.
One other event is happening in May: our New Dancers Jamboree May 22nd at Aloha Grange, 1-3 p.m. We will also give you a great deal on gently used clothing: $1 for pettipants, belts & ties; $2 for skirts, shirts, blouses, dresses & shoes and $5 for petticoats.
March kept us hopping like the Easter Bunny. We started with a wonderful visitation from River City Dancers to our Read Across America Dance. The donated books made their way to Jefferson, where they will be sold to help raise money for building the new Jefferson Library. The next Saturday we battled Eager Beavers for the trophy at Hoedowners' Stache Dance. That was followed by our New Dancers (Basic Level) Jamboree which had 7+ squares of students from our class and all over the area, particularly Oaky Doaks and Tualatin Timbers. We ended the month with Randy Dibble and Chuck teaming up to call a lively night at our 67th Anniversary Dance, with Connie Clark cueing.
The Valley Squares will be having the Trophy Dance on June 18th. The club with the highest percentage of members attending steals the trophy and gets to host their own Trophy Dance. We are having national caller Gary Monday will be calling this dance. See the flyer in the Special Dances area in this issue.

March was a busy month here at the Buckeroo Barn! Our first dance of the month was our Welcome Spring Dance. We were treated to some of Dale Roberson’s yodeling as he was the caller that evening. We had about four squares out on the floor and all of the new dancers were doing great.
The following weekend we had a visitation to the Star Promenader’s dance in Medford. We carpooled together and ended up with a full two squares, so we were able to bring home a banner.
Our second dance of the month was our 50’s themed dance. Don Marshall called and did a great job finding lots of music from that era for us to dance to. We had many visitors from both the north and the south, so we ended up with eight squares out on the floor. A great time was had by all as we danced and snacked on fries, floats, and sundaes!
We spent a lot of time preparing for our annual Barn Sale during March. All of our members worked together and everything was a huge success. We certainly appreciate the investment that our members make in our club.
Keep dancing,
