A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 June 2016
Editor's Note

We now have almost 600 names on the OFN notification mailing list.  That's a big audience.  Make sure your club is taking advantage of this by entering all of your dances and flyers.  It's a great opportunity for free publicity.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Publicity and Education

Our new Federation FaceBook page is off to a great start.  We are already up to 125 member, of which most of them are activity reading the posts.  Only a few people are posting, but the flyers and information are being read.  If you haven't checked it out yet, from your own FaceBook page search for "Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs".  When the page pops up, please click on "Join".  Once you have joined the page, you will be able post your own flyers and comment on your flyers and other ones.  If you do not have a FB page, but would like your flyers posted, please email them to me and I will post them on FB for you.  Please remember that this FB page is not intended to replace the OFN, but to work with it in promoting our clubs.

During our Summer Festival in Seaside, Amanda Roberts will be presenting an educational seminar on how to set up and use FaceBook to promote your club.  She will also be briefly describing other social media like Twitter and Instagram.  If there is an interest, she will also cover how Google Docs can help with communication within your club and council.

Youth Update

Plans are underway for a youth dance in Tualatin the end of May.  Janienne Alexander caller and founder of the new Tualatin Timber Squares is chairing and organizing the dance.  Details in this month’s OFN.

There will be a youth dance in Medford on Friday, July 1st - chaired by Lorri McIntosh.  Chuck Garner will be the caller.  Watch for more information.

Please remember to notify your families that we have scholarships available for youth who need assistance to attend Summer Festival.

The Milton-Freewater Muddy Frogs have completed the social ballroom lessons under the guidance of Neva Reid. This has been a very popular class. The mainstream class under the able calling of Bill Reid will be graduating soon. The Frogs are very involved in the 2018 Washington State Festival, with our president, Merri Anne Huber, at the helm. This festival will be held at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick, WA, the same place our council held a very successful state festival in 2013.

We will still be dancing at the Milton-Freewater Community Building on the third Sunday of the month, from 3:00-5:00, with a potluck following. Call Merri Anne at 541-861-9055 before you come. Bill and Neva Reid are much appreciated as our club caller and cuer.

Dancing is healthy!

We had a really good time in April having both KC Curtis and Chuck Garner as our guest callers. Jackie Gale, our regular cuer, did her usual great job, and we had the extra treat of having Christina Corelli cue for us at our second dance. Many of us attended the Dan Nordby dance as well as the Emerald Empire Council Benefit Dance for Honor Flight (with auction). They were both excellent dances and anyone who did not come missed some really good calling, cueing, and some great camaraderie.

Like many clubs in our area, we are having trouble filling our officer positions, as well as getting other club members to volunteer to help with dances and other tasks. We hope we can grow our club this coming year. Our club always has wonderful callers and cuers, and many visitors to help fill up our squares. We would love to welcome more members, both singles and couples.

On May 13th we will have had our Mexican Fiesta dance with the Whirl-A-Ways combining with us this year to dance to George Hermann and Mike Kious and to enjoy a yummy taco bar at the break. On May 27th Lennie Ludiker will be calling for us.

On June 10th we will have our fund raising dance for Greenhill and will be collecting supplies for orphan cats and dogs. Girls Night Out will be calling. Jim Hattrick will be back to call for our June 24th dance. As a reminder - we dance all summer for those of you looking for a place to dance when your club is dark.

As an FYI - In May and June Roger Putzler will be conducting Plus Workshops on the second and Fourth Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. If you are a Plus dancer and wish more floor time, challenge and FUN, please come to Emerald Dance Center in Springfield.

We are thrilled that more dancers are showing up on Sundays to dance with us from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. with all levels being taught and danced.  It's a lot of FUN as folks are discovering.  Please join us. Tim Matteson, our caller/teacher, does an incredible job at any level. We dance at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield that has a wonderful cushioned wood floor and has all of the amenities to boot. Remember, we are dark May 29 for Memorial Day. Happy dancing!

We have had lively and enjoyable dances this year thanks to our caller, Jim Voll, and our cuer, Jackie Gale. Jim tried something new this year with our new dancer classes. To help students feel more confident and consequently enjoy dancing more, he holds B-51 classes and introduces only a few new moves at a time.

Our first group, ages 9 to15, finished in January and enjoyed dancing at the Mid-Winter Festival. They proceeded to learn the rest of the Mainstream moves and now angel for the present batch of B-51 students which began in February. Our new group consists of five youngsters (ages 6 to 9) and three adults. What fun we have!  To make classes even more exciting, we have a real dance at the class level on the fourth Sunday of every month, the same time as the regular class. Jackie even cues for these dances. We plan to have a B-51 dance in July and in August! Come and join in the fun!

Whirl-A-Ways - Link
The Whirl-A-Ways had a busy April with our spring business meeting on April 17th to elect new club officers for the 2016 – 2017 dance year. I don’t know how other clubs are doing but it is getting more and more difficult to get volunteers to step forward.  However, we did have nearly a fifty percent membership participation in the potluck/meeting.

For our 4th Saturday dance we had a large contingent of visitors from the Roseburg Buckeroos. They had more than enough to take home one of our banners. Time to start planning a return visit to retrieve it.

A few years ago the Single Trees and Whirl-A-Ways decided to come together for a Fiesta Dance during the 2nd weekend of the month. We alternate each year and this year we are looking forward to the Single Trees on May 13th. It promises to be fun with George Hermann and Mike Kious calling. Jackie Gale is cuing.

The Whirl-A-Ways are welcoming the Crew to the Emerald Square Dance Center on Sunday afternoon, June 5th. The dance will be from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Yvonne Clendenin will be the cuer for the afternoon.

For several years now a large group of Whirl-A-Ways have made their way up the mountains for an early summer camp out. Location: Camp Sherman RV Park and Motel, June 17, 18, and 19. A great weekend of fellowship and great food.

Whirl-A-Ways will wrap its dance year on June 25th with our annual pie and ice cream social. So come one and come all to a great dance and plenty of food. Hope to see you all on the dance floor.

We had a busy month! We did a demo at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center's Farm Fest and Plowing Competition. What a fascinating place!

Then the following Saturday was our Club Dance with a Gospel Music theme, one of my personal favorites. Such great fun singing along while Leonard called or Sandra cued!

Finally, we hosted a Mystery Dance for the Lebanon Square Circlers and other MWA friends on the fifth Saturday. We had at least 6 squares of dancers, loads of great food and a good old 'Barn Dance' atmosphere. There was a covered wagon in a corner of the room, quilts on the wall and hay bales covered with feed sacks to sit on. The Heritage Center’s collection of antique vehicles also drew our guests' attention. Even some of our club dressed in pioneer gowns! What a fun, busy month!

Wow, we have been soooo busy; we did a wonderful, fun demo at Ag Fest as we danced all day on their main stage. We have new dancers signed up for fall classes already. Yippee. Then there was the shopping for goodies, eating farm fresh food, and more dancing.

We have our Clogghoppers having a blast. They are learning new songs and are being treated to some lovely young ladies joining them for some fun dancing.

Our January class has moved up to the next level and then a new class is coming along swiftly. They are great fast learners. We have many coming events and demos. Marion County Fair, Salem Art Fair and World Beat, plus lots of fun demos at care centers, private events and even have a great Mary & Cheri Workshop. It is going to be great fun with more fun coming. Double Toe Tap. Joanie.

Lebanon Square Circlers - Link
It has been a busy time for the Lebanon Square Circlers. In April, we had our Hippie Dance on the 2nd with lots of fun costumes and then a regular dance on the 16th. Charlotte Jeskey called for these dances and Jackie Gale cued.

On the 30th of April, our club went on its Mystery Trip. Frank Cawrse had arranged with the Braids and Braves for a special dance held at the Yamhill Heritage Center in McMinnville. We left Lebanon about 5:00 PM, and picked up dancers in Albany and Salem. On the trip, we had fun games led by Barb Schaefer, and also singing. Leonard Snodgrass was the caller for the dance and Sandra Pinion the cuer. It was a fun Time! We had a "mock wedding" on the way home on the bus -- Nick Heineck officiated. So you can tell that our Mystery Trip was a "blast".

We are now getting ready for our Strawberry Festival Weekend. We are collecting items for the Silent Auction and getting clothing ready for the Experienced Clothing Sale. There will be dances on both Friday night and Saturday. The big Lebanon Strawberry Festival parade will be on Saturday morning-- and our club float will be in it. Randy Dibble will be our caller on Saturday evening and Jackie Gale our cuer. Of course, we are serving strawberry shortcake on Saturday night. Then the weekend closes with a breakfast on Sunday. Hope to see you in a square!

Our club goes dark for the summer but we are planning some special activities.

Our first night of Tango class turned out five new students and 11 couples total. A great start to a new class. The class is for new students to learn the steps and for experienced couples to learn better technique. A win-win for all of us. Several dancers brought Cinco de Mayo goodies for the evening.

We continue to work songs on the ICBDA list. They are a good variety of current and classic songs. The last hour of the evening is Phase 4+ and easy Phase 5’s. We are getting ready for Spring Spectacular in Woodburn

Our birthday (#40) dance is June 16 from 7-9 p.m. It will be a fun evening of dancing with no instruction that night. The theme is Ruby. (color and stone) Come and join us for a fun night of dancing and giggles with friends. Marilyn Schmit

We are now dark until our September dance. Thank you to everyone who came to our pie night dance in May.

We all had a great time at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival at the start of May!!! Mom promised that she would send in an article and pictures. Thank you to everyone who supported us this year. Julia & Logan send special thanks to Ken & Diane Pratt and Frances & Floyd Herigstad for all of the help with their round dance competition. We did film all of the competition and Mom will have the computer set up at dances we are attending so others can view the event.

We will be getting out on some visitations over the summer. See you soon

Aloha! We are happy to observe that those of us who are Dibble Cruisers brought back some nice weather and sunny dispositions from our adventures in Hawaii. A tip of the hat to Joni, JW, Sandy, John, Lanny and Ginger, members of the Checkmates and frequent Valley River guests, for being fantabulous organizers and ambassadors for our trip. And, to the weather gods, thank you for the flat seas on the North Pacific! We rocked the seas rather than vice Versa. Mahalo, Toe Draggers, for visiting our club and to Caller KC Curtis for filling in for Randy.

Join us in June on the second (plus) and fourth (mainstream) Fridays for squares and rounds at the Community Center, 2nd and Howard, in Newberg. All that cruising put a gleam in Randy's eyes, meaning he has certainly conjured up some spicy choreography for our upcoming dances.

Pull out your calendars and make sure you've reserved Friday evening, July 22, for our annual Dance Under the Stars in Newberg. Catching up with friends and dancing with all of our happy, energetic guests make it an event we look forward to all year.

Please note that we will be dark the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend as we follow Randy to a calling gig in Bend

Willamette Squares - Link
Many dancers came out for Willamette Squares' Maypole dance. It is always a festive occasion celebrating the arrival of spring and the anticipation of May flowers. Twenty people wove the colorful ribbons over and under, creating a lovely pattern of color around the Maypole. It is a joyful dance that is fun to do and/or watch. The Braids and Braves recovered one of their old banners.

Our waltz lessons are coming along nicely. We will have successfully completed our round dance series of lessons soon.

We are looking forward to honoring our Veterans on our regular dance the fourth Saturday in May. We are so very thankful for their service.

Our April 13th Anniversary Dance may have been a milestone for our club. Six callers were on stage at once. (We had eight callers attend, but we didn’t want the stage to collapse.)

Many clubs close down over the summer, but our club usually reaps the benefits by getting visitors who would not normally come. They come because their own clubs have gone dark. This is part of our savvy marketing.

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
Were you able to join us at our “Go Hog Wild Dance” on March 18th? Tim Kane, a Chaps & Petticoats member was also the Caller for the dance. Tim donated a pig he had raised, and he was the butcher. He also roasted the pig, carved the pig, then after the 6:45pm feast, Tim was the evening Caller. It was incredible - we had 80+ people attend!! Rounds opened at 7:30pm with Ken Pratt cueing and 8:00pm Tim called what must have been our liveliest dance of 2016, thus far. “Feed them food and they will come!”

On April 15, Mike and Julie Stout were our Caller/Cuer. It was advertised as a casual “come-as-you-are” dance and we were blessed with a partial square of Sunset Promenaders plus the room was buzzing when members from the disbanded club, Squaws and Paws, started arriving. Two squares later, we had us a hopping dance with four squares on the floor. Wow, what support these clubs gave our Caller/Cuer of the evening. Much thanks to all for a thrilling dance.

We look forward to our June dances: “Hey man” it would be so cool if you could join us on Friday, June 3, at our “Hippie” Dance with the Caller dude Scott Zinser and Cheryl Manley, the Cuer chic’. On third Friday, June 17, our dance floor opens with Ken Pratt, cueing at 7:30pm and George Hermann is our Caller “ please honor us with your presence, as it is our last dance before we go “dark” for the summer.

What are you doing in July? On July 16th Chaps & Petticoats serve Elephant Ears and specialty drinks in a food booth at the Hubbard Hop Festival “ it is our annual fundraiser. The all-day event starts with a Parade at 10:00am, food and games throughout the day and after dark entertainment in the Beer Gardens. We encourage you to turn out for a fun event and support our fundraising efforts.

May brought the installation of our new officers. We are grateful to Doug and Kathie Femrite for capably serving as our outgoing president and to Donna Krossman-Darling as our second vice president. We welcome Marc and Bev De La Bruere as our incoming president and Robert and Young Lumsden as our new second vice president. Also, a large thanks to Tom and Katie Cassatt who remain first vice president and Dan and Debbie Ragland who continue to serve as treasurer. Ron Rasmussen will continue to help us with publicity and yield the secretary job to Charlie and Linda Phillips. Thanks to everyone willing to serve in these volunteer positions.

May also marks the graduation of our mainstream class. Scott Zinser has successfully coached them along, and they are doing well. We hope to see many of them at our dances in June. We will be having plus workshops through the summer on every Thursday evening with Scott Zinser from 7:30-9:30 PM, $5 per person, starting June 2, 2016.

Our April 30th dance marked the return of an all plus menu to our 5th Saturday dances and was well attended. Scott Zinser and Frances Herigstad were the caller and cuer and did a great job. We thank everyone who came out to visit the Barn and to make it a fun evening. The decision was made in March to return to having our 5th Saturday dances be all plus level after several years of mainstream, and so far that seems to be a winner. Another decision was made to shift our dance nights to 1st, 4th, and 5th Saturdays starting in 2016. There are fewer clubs dancing on 4th Saturdays than there are 3rd Saturdays. We look forward to making whatever changes will promote square dancing participation.

Happy Hoppers - Link
The Happy Hoppers will host our last dance before going dark for the summer on Saturday, June 4, at the Clark County Square Dance Center with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. This will be our annual "Strawberry Shortcake Dance", so you don't want to miss that one!

Our lessons are "dark" for the summer season, to resume in September.

Fay and I hosted two women from Japan for the month of April. It was part of a sister city relationship between Vancouver, USA and Joyo, Japan, arranged by an organization which specializes in home stays for Japanese exchange students. We had a great experience sharing our home, the English language, and our American culture with Nobuko Nakamura and Tamae Tanimura, who are both retired school teachers. Square dancing was definitely one of the high points of their experience.

They arrived on April 1. The next evening, we brought them to a regular Saturday dance with the Hoppers. They observed and had a great time meeting all the friendly club members, who made them feel very welcome. When we got home, Tamae kept repeating one of Jim's calls, "Boys run around the girls", and chuckling about that. I guess it does sound kind of funny!

Anyway, they were just in time to start a new session of beginning square dance lessons on Monday, April 4. That evening, and for the next 3 Mondays, Nobuko and Tamae were very enthusiastic students, overcoming a normal learning curve which was somewhat complicated by the language barrier.

When we had an open house toward the end of the month to wish them farewell, 16 of their new friends attended. 13 of those were square dancers. How cool is that??

River City Dancers - Link
It’s often difficult to give up a long tradition, and it has been so for River City Dancers. For many years we’ve looked forward to our annual Lone Fir weekend in late July. It’s only an hour’s drive for most of us (hold your breath for that fabulous I-5 blockage!) There’s that fabulous view of Mt. St. Helens from the quiet little town of Cougar, Washington. There was a choice of decent but somewhat rustic cabins at Lone Fir that were reasonably priced, or big RV spaces for those of us with rigs. We had free use of a community “living room”, although “running water” had to be improvised.

This year, however, Lone Fir management upped their rates, and they wanted to charge for the common room. Worst of all, no one offered to chair the weekend. It was a lot of work, as a committee cooked two group breakfasts and one supper for fifty or more people. Cougar has a couple of small restaurants, including there at the camp, but we wanted to be “self contained”.

Because of these factors, our River City Board wisely cancelled our Lone Fir weekend, and suggested that we go to Diamond Lake instead.

In all my years of dancing, I’ve always wanted to go to Diamond Lake. We’re looking forward to a new adventure.

A few of us managed to celebrate Sunday, April 10th at Timber 8’s Birthday Dance at the Buckaroo Barn in Roseburg. The Crew was calling: Jim Hattrick; Randy Dibble; Daryl Celendenin and Les Seeley, with Cuer Neil Koozer. The best part was for $26 each, which included the door cost, we enjoyed a fabulous new bus driven by Melissa James. What a luxury! (What a great driver….we didn’t know Melissa drove a bus!)

I remember a few other square dance bus trips. One was a River City weekend with the Charlie Brown Squares in Grants Pass. We had a year to plan and raise money, because it cost over $100 a person. The Charley Brown Squares treated us like Royalty. We stayed at a medium priced (but clean) motel along the way.

I recall a few Mystery Trips taken by bus…so much better than “caravanning” and safer than cars.

I highly recommend that clubs consider a special event by bus. Our Roseburg bus was smooth and quiet, with soft comfortable seats and a great restroom in back. (Plenty of leg room, too!) With a little planning, I suspect clubs will find costs are not nearly as expensive as they think.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
Seven Ramblers attended the Portland Area Council’s Fifth Friday Dance on April 29. What a wonderful evening of dancing and friendship, as well as a great opportunity to interact with dancers from other area clubs. The Ramblers extend their thanks and appreciation to all the hard-working volunteers who organized and presented the dance. We look forward to the next one!

We celebrated Mainstream graduation at our May 7 dance. Ian Craig did a fantastic job of keeping us on our toes and making sure we had lots practice using our left hands! We had seven students in the class. All of them are excellent dancers and will contribute greatly to the future of our club and square dancing in our area. As an indication of the timelessness of our favorite pastime, one of our new dancers originally started dancing in Austin, Texas, in the 1970s. She’s come back to dancing after a brief 40 year hiatus! Another new dancer is following in the footsteps of her grandparents, whom she remembers fondly as always enjoying square dances. She even has some of her grandmother’s hand-sewn skirts and crinolines!

Our last dance before our summer break will be Saturday, June 4, at the Milwaukie Grange. Our caller will be Don Wood. We will be alternating Mainstream and Plus tips from 7:30 to 9:30. Starting in September, our dances will move to the second Saturday of the month, still at the Milwaukie Grange. That means our September dance will be on September 10, from 7:30-9:30 pm.

Finally, if you know someone who really has the itch to take square dance lessons but doesn’t want to wait until the fall, we are offering an 8-week series of lessons from June 1 through July 27 (no class June 29). We hope to make it through all 51 Basic calls during this class. The classes will take place from 7-9 pm at the Ankeny Street Studio, 975 SE Sandy Blvd., Portland 97214.

On April 30th the TVC hosted a Spring Fling dance at the Aloha Grange. There were nearly 10 squares of dancers enjoying the calling of Jim Hattrick and cueing of Ken Pratt. We all had a wonderful time. The Hoedowners claimed the TVC banner by having the highest percentage of their club present.

The Council has elected officers for the upcoming year with President, Dale Brabham, Vice-President, Kathy Roberts, and Secretary, Andis Geruts, with Treasurer, Lane Clem continuing his role from last year. The new State Delegate will be Jim Rogers. Outgoing officers are Gary Clark, Dale Brabham, Tom Sminia, and Kathy Worthington. Thank you for your dedication. Our Council delegates are doing a fantastic job in bringing their clubs concerns to the Council as well as taking Council information to their clubs.

The next TVC event will be our annual Hahn Barn Dance on Sunday, August 21st. There will be a potluck picnic by the lake at 5:30 PM preceding the dance in the barn. There will more details in future editions of the OFN.

The Tualatin Valley Council will soon grow to 12 member clubs. The Tualatin Timber Squares has petitioned the Council for membership. As the old song says, "June is bust’in out all over…" and unlike many clubs, the Columbia River Dancers are going to be dancing through the summer. This is a good time for all of the area dancers to keep their skills sharp. While square dance attire is always in style, our summer dances are much more informal as the Hazel Dell Grange does not have air conditioning. Flip-flops are not encouraged, however.

We will be having a GREAT BALLS OF FUR dance on May 28 to help our furry friends at Second Chance Companions. We are encouraging everyone to bring cat and/or dog food to the dance. Our caller that evening will be our own Jim Hattrick.

We are still lining up our caller for our June 11 dance and have Jim back on the 28th.

Just as a reminder, we dance plus from 7 to 8 PM and mainstream from 8 to 10:00. See you in a square.

Thanks to everyone who attended our 41st Anniversary Dance April 24th. In spite of parking challenges over 100 dancers showed up making this dance the best ever! Our three callers; Jim Hattrick, Daryl Clendenin, Darrell Kalmbach, and cuers, Joyce Hooper and Yvonne Clendenin, responded to the crowd with enthusiastic calling of their own making the dance super special. Our apologies for running low on food but we did try to make it up by bringing extra chicken and desserts. Thanks to all the volunteers who managed to find extra chairs, tables, and food.

At the dinner Chairman Karen Steinka presented the Swenson Award to a couple who have devoted untold hours to the square dance community here and around the state, Mike and Sally Duyck. When you see them say “Thank You and Congratulations”; they deserve it.

The following officers were elected and will be installed June 4: Chief Dam Builder, Sally Duyck; Assistant Dam Builder, Karen and Ferrous Steinka; Thumper, Leslie Tallman; Gnawer, Mike Duyck; and TVC Representative, Kay Rogers.

Plus Classes are continuing and students are making excellent progress. We will keep going until the dancers feel confident they can dance anywhere with different callers. Thanks to the members who have been bringing in snacks for the students every Monday.

Warning! On Memorial Day, May 30th, we will dance at the Aloha Grange, 185th Ave. and TV Highway. Sunset Presbyterian Church will be closed that day. No lessons on Memorial Day.

We dance on holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. Hayshakers - Link
The Hayshakers have been dancing twice a month and in fact, we had two squares at the last dance. Of course we couldn’t do it without the Wave Steppers helping us. Also, we had four new people coming to learn to dance. We are hoping to keep this up. You do need to call ahead of time though as usual.

Hoedowners - Link
Can anything equal the April we’ve had this year? Certainly nothing in the weather department; lovely days and balmy evenings. How did the Hoedowners spend theirs?? On the 9th we had our Denim and Diamonds Dance. It was our chance to flash our bling; diamonds, diamante, rhinestones, pastes, crystals, we didn’t care. We wore it in our hair and ears, round our necks and waists, on our wrists and boots and mounted on our denim of course! Hope you enjoyed the evening. We sure did and we’ll be blinging more items for next year’s dance.

April 23rd was our annual Come One, Come All Circus Dance. The ambiance was perfect. The fresh popcorn popping in the entry way was a sensory reminder of the joys of the circus. And what a fine group of circus performers there were. The tattooed man and lady were in attendance as was an assortment of clowns, vendors and that guy who gets shot out of the end of the cannon. I’ve never seen so many red noses and no one had a cold. The visitation from River City Dances was wonderful and they were truly in the spirit of the evening with costumes galore. There were seven squares on the floor most of the evening and the dining room was full as we noshed on hot dogs, caramel corn, ice cream treats, licorice whips, you know all that healthy stuff we enjoy while at the circus. Thanks to Janienne Alexander for calling a tip so Daryl could clown his way around the dance floor. Please join us next year at our annual circus event.

The very next day, April 24th, the Hoedowners had a visitation to the Eager Beavers 41st Anniversary Dance and Chicken Dinner. We have so many friends that are members so it’s always fun to attend one of their mainstream dances and help them celebrate. Congratulations to dual members Mike and Sally Duyck for winning the Swenson award.

We ended the month by dancing at the TVC 5th Saturday Dance at the Aloha Grange and claiming the TVC Banner. They always make sure we can dance every Saturday, every month and we’re thankful for it.

What did the circus fortune teller say was coming up in June? June 11th is our Strawberry Delight Dance. The smell of freshly sliced strawberries will be wafting up from the dining room swerved with shortcake and cream and our Mr. Potato Head Dance will be June 25th. We’ll celebrate Ms. Potato Head too. If you’re not feeling all heady or up to big feet and ears then just come comfy and dine on our baked potato bar.

Keep in mind that we will celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with our annual Red, White, and Blue Dance on July 2 with red berries, blueberries, and homemade vanilla ice cream. Come join us for an evening of great calling and yummy dessert.

With weather warming up, be sure to check our website as to whether the temperature is too high for dancing when the thermometer shoots up.

It's that time of year when elections are in the news. Ours went more sedately than the national and state elections are going. Dan Knierim is our new president, Patty Bonney the incoming vice president, Janelle Janicke will become the new secretary, Lindie Noonan will take over as treasurer, Sue Naven is now our immediate past president (a board position), and Patricia Billings is member-at-large. She and Janelle will be our TVC delegates.

R Square D - Link
R Square D celebrated our 63rd anniversary on April 8th. Three squares kept the floor moving for the entire evening. Outgoing president Sandy Sims was presented a gift for all her hard work over the last year.

Poodle skirts and rolled up sleeves on t-shirts all came out to celebrate the 50”s, 60”s dance on April 23rd. Elvis impersonator Scott Coon made the evening one to remember with all the Elvis oldies. Visitors came from Hayshakers and Cougar Squares to dance to the sounds of Elvis. Thank You Scott.

Summer dances begin with plus at 7:00 and Mainstream with rounds from 8:00-10:00. They will be on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month starting on June 8th; we will go back to our regular schedule on September 9th.

Toe Draggers - Link
Our April dances had an added benefit by helping out the Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter. What a great way to start and finish out the month. Lots of animal toys and food from the Toes will help out the animal population at the shelter. Many visitations have come and gone since out last report. We visited the Buzzing’ Bees’ for their 58thanniversary dance. Once again KC their new caller made it into a fun evening as he always does. April 22nd we picked up a banner visiting the Valley River Dancers in Newberg. KC was their guest caller while Randy Dibble was out and about on his square dance cruise. Earlier that month the Valley River Dancers hired a special driver to drive a square dance bus to pick up dancers along the way and travel to Roseburg, to dance with the Timber’s 8’s. A few of the Toes were able to go and said it was a fun time. We visited the Eager Beavers for their anniversary dance on April 24th. They had a yummy chicken dinner and showed us all a wonderful time. We have been a busy club, dancing out and about with great friends.

We are glad Harlan Flint is back on the dance floor. He had a health scare and now has a new stent in his heart. Heard Bev was a great nurse for him. Speaking of those two, they gave us a fun night of just round dancing and presented the new dancers with their graduation badges

Our Let’s Race and Crazy Hat dance brought out the best of our creative ideas in our members. Hats, hats and more crazy hats. We have such a fun group with all of their ideas and laughter.

Come and dance with us to celebrate KC’s birthday on July 1st. Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. with BBQ Hot Dogs and Sausages. See you in a square.

Tri Squares - Link
The Tri Squares have been very busy the last few months. During this time, we elected a new board, changed our dance dates and even added a few new members to our club. We have seven new members, plus one returning member.

Make sure to note our new dancing dates! We will now be dancing on the 2nd Saturday and 4th Friday starting in September. We’re working on planning our Anniversary dance in September. Make sure to keep an eye out for this special event.

Our new board was approved at our board meeting in April. The board is as follows:

We look forward to another year of fun and fellowship. Thank you to those who attend our dances and make it special.

See you in a square,

Leslie Woodland

Please join us for our Trophy Dance June 18th. Yes, that is the actual date. I write my report a month ahead of time and when the Board makes changes, I need to think back to what I wrote, and then think ahead and amend the report before it goes to press…So sorry for the confusion. Anyway, we are featuring Gary Monday, originally from Louisiana and now based in Seattle. He has called nationally and internationally, and is a lot of fun. Connie Clark will be cueing. We will follow our new dance format: New Dancer Level 7-8; MS 8-9+ with tips getting increasingly difficult so we end with Plus. Our Strawberry Dance is June 4th and will have the same format.

In April we won a banner from Independence Wagon Wheelers when we visited their dance featuring Dan Nordbye. Great food and good fellowship made the drive in the rain worth it. We also brought a nice contingent to the Oaky Doaks Jamboree and to Tualatin Timbers' first dance at Winona Grange.

Our April dances with the new format were successful enough that the Board voted to continue with that format through the summer. Please encourage your students and new dancers to get in floor time at a real dance.
