Oregon Federation News
September 2016

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 September 2016
Editor's Note

With summer winding down, many clubs will be starting up lessons in September.  Please take a moment to make sure your club's lesson information is correct, and not just something leftover from last year.  Remember that you can attach a flyer to your lessons just like you do with your dances.

A brand new set of Federation officers will take over at the Federation meeting on September 18.  I'll highlight that set next month.

All of the clubs and councils in the Federation have received an equal portion of the donation from the estate of Susan Corbett.  Many clubs have asked for an address to send a note of appreciation:

Estate of Susan Corbett

July brought us an excellent Hawaiian Beach Party dance with Terry Halley doing some awesome calling and Jackie Gale cueing with her "get up and dance" round dance rhythms. We gave out year badges (5, 10, 15, and 20) to four members, and a Single Trees token to visitors from San Luis Obispo, California. What a neat surprise! And our 2nd July dance was called by Lennie Ludiker. We had some visitors and a fun time learning a few "old time" moves.

If "ya all" look at this before August 26th - you'll see we have our Western Hoedown dance with Jim Voll calling. So put on your duds and come and dance with us to round out your summer festivities.

September brings us the start of a new dance year and a new caller for our second Friday dances - Jim Hattrick is braving the long drive to Springfield to keep us in first class dancing mode for the year. In honor of having Jim as our caller, this big celebration dance will be free to all on September 9th! So come join us in welcoming him and make it a grand occasion.

On September 23rd, Craig Abercrombie and Al Frazier will delight us with songs to keep our feet stomping. It's our Fabulous 50's! dance. So dress back in time and strut your stuff. We love visitors.

We dance Sundays from 5:30 - 8:00. We had one new dancer, Kathy Peters, who learned with seven angels in the square! We've been getting more and more people out to our Sunday dances. Tim Matteson is our caller/teacher and is great at any level from beginner through advanced. Tim is also learning challenge along with a couple of other Spin Cycle Squares members.

We had elections recently and have retained most of the board who were willing to run again. David Lajoie is president, Kurt Jensen is vice-president, Lorna Mercer is treasurer, and our one new officer is Cheryl Hagey (Tim) who is our new secretary. Christina Corelli is member-at-large. A lot of our business can be taken care of at our dances. Some of the meetings have been held at Christina and Kirby's place in Eugene.

We look forward to a new dance season. Come and join us Sunday evenings at the Emerald dance center in Springfield at 5:30.

Happy dancing, Christina Corelli, Member-at-large

Whirl-A-Ways - Link
The Whirl-A-Ways will be returning to our regularly scheduled dances beginning September 10th. For many years the club has gone dark for July and August to allow the dancers to vacation and visit other clubs and festivals around the State.

We look forward to a fun year as Camille Durbec and her team set up dances with special themes. Be on the lookout for more information from Camille. She may even have a surprise of two for club members and visitors. She is challenging the club members to get out of their comfort zone this year and do some more visitations. I am sure we will hear more about that.

Whirl-A-Ways like most clubs has to have it’s business meetings throughout the year. Our first one will be a potluck at the Emerald Square Dance Center on Sunday evening, September 18th. Club members should look for more through the newsletter and other announcements.

We look forward to the start of a great year of dancing and fellowship time with so many of you. Hope to see you all on the dance floor.

Many thanks to the Summer Festival Committee for another successful event! Our Council is looking forward to hosting next summer’s Summer Festival in Salem. Hope to see many of you there.

We are sad to report that the Salem Square Dance Center was again broken into and some things stolen. This is the second time in recent months. It is hard to understand why these things happen.

Congratulations to our own Thomas Buchheit of the Silver City Squares for being awarded a $1000.00 scholarship from National. Well deserved, Thomas!

Braids and Braves, though dark for the summer, have been busy doing demos at Amity and McMinnville and planning for fall classes.

We had a great picnic at Nate and Jennie Ramer’s in June and we're looking forward to our club Camp-out at the beach. We will be getting back to our monthly club dances on the third Saturday beginning in September. We love to have visitors!

The Corvallis Squares has had opportunities for a couple of demo dances to raise awareness and show how fun square dancing is. We danced at the Benton County Fair and at the Grace Center.

Our mainstream lessons will start on Monday evenings beginning on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. Bruce Lowther will be our instructor.

Our club is planning a potluck and meeting at Joseph and Cynthia's in August, to reconnect and gear up for the fall. We look forward to kicking off the dance season on Sept. 10! Karen

Our Strawberry Festival was a great success -- three days of dancing, potlucks, experienced clothing sales, silent auction and Sunday breakfast. Our club participated in the Lebanon Strawberry Festival parade and it was the hottest weekend in June. But it all went well.

Our club had a gathering at Nick and Kaynor Heineck's home on June 26 for a garden party/meeting; lots of croquet, potluck, garden tour, and end-of-year reports. It was not so hot that weekend so it was very pleasant in the Heineck's gorgeous yard.

We are looking forward to the Labor Day gathering at Frank and Marianne Cawrse's farm. As usual, there will be potlucks, lots of game playing and dancing to the "Silo Caller" (Charlotte Jeskey calls dances from the top of the silo on the farm.) What fun it will be!

Our club is getting ready for another year of fun and dancing under the leadership of Wanda Frenzel - President, Frank Cawrse - V.P., Kaynor Heineck - Sec., and Barb Newton - Treas. See you in a square! Marilyn York

Our club finished Tango lessons and spent August doing mostly workshops on various rhythms and working on a few pesky steps. We have had two guest cuers in the form of Jeanine Norden and Christina Corelli in July and Jeanine Norden will return in August while Cheryl goes to USAWest. They have been great fun and we laughed at silly things while they were there.

We are having an ice cream dance on the first Thursday of September to celebrate the end of summer. The following week will start Fox Trot lessons in workshops or beginning, depending on the variety of students we get the first couple of nights. We will continue Tango from where we left off in July, on the second Thursday in September in the third hour of the evening.

We are always open to visitors and we dance on Thursdays from 6:30-9:30. Lessons are from 7:30-8:20 p.m. Marilyn Schmit

The fall season is heating up and summer is (hopefully, weather-wise) cooling down. We dance every month of the year on the first and third Fridays with a 5th Friday Plus Dance. Come join us. Our hall is air conditioned to beat the heat.

In July we had three dances, our two regular dances and our 5th Friday Plus Dance with Randy Dibble and Christina Corelli. Great fun was had by all who attended.

Mainstream lessons begin on Wednesday September 14 at 6:30 pm. The first two lesson dates are free. Bring your friends!!

Save the date for our upcoming Corn & Cluck Dance on September 16. I believe that we have talked The Chicken into putting in an appearance. You do not want to miss The Chicken. Dinner is at 7:00 p.m. Pre-rounds are at 7:30 p.m., Plus at 7:45 p.m. followed by Mainstream with Rounds 8-10:15 p.m. Cost is $8.00 which includes dinner and dance. Flyer will be posted soon. Well, we're back dancing this month! Our September dance is a Hawaiian Pie Night with casual attire and pies with ice cream at break. If it is a hot day, dancing will be downstairs in the cool basement.

Lessons start on Tuesday September 13 and we are hoping for a good turnout of students.

We danced in the Homer Davenport Parade August 6. Everyone who danced enjoyed themselves very much.

When you come to see us, be alert as the hall was painted by the Waldo Hills Community Club over the summer. It is now a light yellow with brown trim. If you are looking for a white building, you might miss it!

We are proud to announce that Thomas Buchheit received the United Square Dancers of America scholarship for $1,000 this year. Marilyn Schmit accepted it for him at Nationals. See you at a dance soon! Petrina Buchheit

The Valley River Dancers had a busy July with the 4th of July St. Paul Rodeo Parade, the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival Parade, and our wildly popular Dance Under the Stars. Our split the pot was a whopping $67, and coincidentally Randy celebrated his 67th birthday the same weekend; in an amazing gesture, winners Robin and Rick Faltersack gifted the pot to Randy to kick off his special weekend. Square dancers never cease to amaze.

Speaking of events, join us Friday, August 26, for our luau dance. Randy Dibble is calling and Julie Stiers is cueing. We will have a half hour of plus before we do the mainstream hula!

Thank you, dancers, for joining us -- you make our events really fun.

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares held a wonderful end of July dance at the Salem Square Dance Center. The theme was "Fun in the Sun," and there were plenty of reminders of playing and relaxing in the sun. Along the front of the stage was a chaise lounge, beach towel, two beach umbrellas, kiddies wading pool, a drink glass, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a plastic bucket with shovels. On the tables were green tablecloths, small beach balls, sunkist yellow and orange wrapped hard candy balls, and pop bottles containing colorful zinnias and dahlias. It was easy to imagine ourselves at the ocean or lake. Of course, the food was, as always, delicious and plentiful! All that was missing was the campfire. The dancing was lively and fun, and the camaraderie great!

Willamette Squares will be enjoying the annual summer picnic with good food and dancing. We hope to see you there! Jodee Howard

Our council is closely watching the Country Cut-Ups and the results they are having. As of late, they are in the midst of community involvement. They are participating in town and community affairs such as their recent “Dull and Boring Day”. They’ve made a special point to invite the community to dance lessons (no charge) just to watch the lessons. They are also having “open house” at their barn, simply to invite the community in and show that the barn is open to the public, and exactly what is inside of the mysterious barn that is seen from the street. Unlike the fraternal clubs, it really is open to all.

Not too far behind are the Buzzin’ Bees, who have invited the community to come to a mini lesson and learn about eight moves, and have a dance based upon those moves. Reportedly, this has been very successful in California.

And we cannot forget about the Chaps & Petticoats, who will be participating in the Aurora Colony Days Parade.

That’s the key: community involvement. It keeps our hobby in the limelight and our camaraderie within our club.

If you’re reading this in time, you’re welcome to our Back to School dance on Aug 31. Bring your school supplies as there are many children around our area, living in near poverty, who will be glad for the assistance.

Attendance was way down on our July 27 dance. Many of our regulars were at Summer Festival.

Our featured callers this month are Craig Abercrombie and Al Frazier from Austin, Texas. Curing with them will be our own Tami Helms. This will be Sep 21.

The weather is turning cooler and we can return to our swishy skirts the guys like so much. Come on out and dance with our eclectic group. Be gentle on us ladies. We don’t like to be cranked around. If we are, we get cranky! Club bouncer Bruce Bruiser may even have a word with you.

We have been having a hot time in the Boring Barn this summer! There have been lots of activities to keep us dancing. Several of our club members enjoyed the Summer Festival in Seaside while some of us held down the fort back home with a 5th Saturday dance at the end of July. Our new exhaust fan is helping the heat problem somewhat.

All summer, we have been planning and participating in various activities to build toward our lessons starting September 15th. Much effort has been made to reach out to the community and make them aware of our existence. Soon, we will see if these efforts have paid off. If a good size class comes together, the next mission is to work on retaining them as dancers, and hopefully, new club members. None of this happens by accident, and each club member should think about how they can contribute to this effort.

Looking toward fall, we are planning our Anniversary dance in early October and our annual Ham, Eggs, and Pancake Breakfast and Bazaar. There will some valuable items raffled off, as well. Hopefully, many of you will be there!

Happy Hoppers - Link
After having been "dark" for the Summer, it's September and the Happy Hoppers are excited to be back!

The highpoint of the summer season, our annual club picnic took place on Sunday, August 7, at Don and Joanne Oja's farm. Touching bases with old friends was the order of the day.

On July 23, members Pauline and Walt Eby were honored as the Royal Couple in the Camas Days Parade, which was quite an honor for a couple very deserving of the recognition.

Our new club president is Melissa James, who is developing a reputation for being a dynamo and a natural born leader. Thank you, Melissa, for stepping up to the plate!

The Happy Hoppers work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Our tireless club vice-presidents, Liza and Tom Halpenny, will once again be coordinating this program for this next year. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. Square dance lesson season will re-start on Monday, September 12 at the Clark County Square Dance Center. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00.

As always, we have Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center, with our club caller/cuer, Jim Hattrick. This month, it is the 3rd and the 17th. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00. Our "Back to School" dance will take place on September 3. We collect school supplies to donate to a local elementary school for student who need them.

The future of our venue, the Clark County Square Dance Center is still very much up in the air. A sale is pending, but before that can be culminated, there is some litigation taking place about property boundaries.

What was, what is and what will be.

July saw the Oaky Doaks celebrate the country’s independence from the Red Coats with our July 2nd Freedom Dance and Cookout only to welcome the back by dancing to music from such groups as the Beatles at our July 16th British Invasion dance. It found us gathering with our families for our annual picnic on the 23rd and a few of us dancing on the beach at the Summer Festival in Seaside at the end of the month.

August sees the installation of our new officers at the members meeting and cookout on August 2nd. Our first dance on August 6th is a no theme dance but the fun will still be there. The dance on August 20th is our “We are not dark” dance with a special lights out tip. So, bring your flashlights.

September will see the Oaky Doaks supporting education with our September 3rd “Back to School” dance. Visiting dancers helping us in our efforts by donating school supplies receive a $1.00 off at the door. Waltz round dance classes with Helen Halley will be starting on September 8th. So whether if you aren’t wanting try something new or refresh on what you once did, Helen will be there to help. Who’s the leader of the club? Come join us on September 17th with Mickey and friends at our Disney dance and maybe it could be you.

Are you holding an Oaky Doaks banner hostage? If so, then let us know and we will “pay” you a ransom of eight dancers to get it back. River City Dancers, Chaps and Petticoats and B & B’s we are holding at least one banner from your club. Do you have what it takes to get it back?????

Our club was saddened and shocked by the death of Bob Bishop. Bob was a member of our club for many years. He was president and most likely served in other positions. Most of our members went to the memorial dance.

Yesterday we learned that Rene Cole broke her hip and is in a Home for therapy. We will miss her smiling face at our dances. She has danced with us for many years as well many other groups.

We had our picnic at Stringfield Park. Our picnic was a combined with the Grotto Masons. We had fun visiting with the other group. A group of us went for a walk on one of the trails. The wildlife we saw included: a nutria ,many ducks ,osprey, even an eagle.

Many visitors joined us dancing in our air conditioned hall. We went on a fun visitation to the BnBs. More visitations are being planned.

The TVC hosted the Summer Festival in Seaside July 29th to 31st. Andy Allemeo and Dave Cooper were the featured caller and cuer, both doing a fantastic job. Additionally our talented local callers and cuers donated their time to help make this a wonderful weekend. The weather was very pleasant, allowing about 5 squares to dance on the beach. Many thanks go to Kay Rogers for her tireless efforts in making the Festival happen. The scheduling for the callers and cuers was done by Daryl Clendenin, who as Kay said, worked above and beyond making her job so much easier.

Andy threw some intricate stuff at both the Mainstream and the Plus dancers and commented from the stage that he was impressed that the floor did as well as they did. He said that the level he saw was a testament to the excellent callers and cuers we have in the area.

The next TVC event will be the Tri-Council Dance on October 29th. This fifth Saturday dance will be held at the Clark County Square Dance Center in Vancouver Washington and will be hosted by the Evergreen Council. More details next month.

We continue to dance through the summer but this September is going to be a rather special month in that we will be DARK BOTH SATURDAYS. On September 10th we will be going to the Puyallup fair with some 500+ dancers. More on this next month, but the day will be very interesting. Then the Cloggers will take over the Grange Hall for their annual dance on the 24th. We thought about dancing with the cloggers but some of us older folks have sore feet already and shin splints are no fun. The club has planned a visitation that evening instead with our good friends in Kelso, the R Square D's. Final plans may include a dinner out before the dance.

But, not to worry! WE will be back at it in October, bigger and better than ever. I will give everyone a heads up that we will be hosting Dan Nordbye and Julie Stiers on the 26th of November in our Turkey Burnoff dance. As the saying goes, "Plan ahead or you may get a little behind."

See you in a square.

Eager Beavers - Link
Our students graduated July 25th becoming official Plus Dancers. Congratulations to all who kept at it although I know from experience that you feel you will never “get it” at some point. Believe me; it becomes easier as you practice. But do not worry about mistakes; even veterans of 20+ years can make a major goof. We have four new members joining the Eager Beavers; Terri Cummings, Bob Lockerby, and Mel & Mary Pederson. Please welcome them into your dances. Remember it takes practice and more practice. Summer Festival in Seaside was great fun. The weather was wonderful for dancing, even on the sand. We want to thank TVC and Kay Rogers for putting this together. Also thank you to Andy Allemao, he did a great job and kept us moving. Additionally let's not forget to give special thanks to Daryl Clendenin along with all of our great area callers that gladly donated their time and talents to make this weekend special.

IMPORTANT: We are adjusting our dance start and end times. We are trying to come up with a balance of times which will be OK for our members and visitors, and allow our callers to return from the dance avoiding some of the afternoon rush hour. They travel to St. Johns, East Vancouver, and to the Gateway district. You can imagine what I5, US26, and I84 are like near 4 PM. Check our website for current schedule. At this writing we are trying 12:30 to 2:30 with a short meeting at 2:30.

On Labor Day, September 5th, we will be dancing at Aloha Grange on 185th Ave. Daryl Clendenin will be calling and Yvonne cueing. There is a link for a map to the Aloha Grange on our webpage.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 12:30-2:30 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

We had a wonderful time at the Summer Festival this year. The weather cooperated too.

We, the Hayshakers, continue to have dances twice a month with the help of the Wave Steppers and we help them out when they dance once a month. We now have an open policy, if you will, that anyone who is interested in learning to dance, we go ahead and have them come to the dances and have them dance half the time. Hopefully we will get a few new people join our club. Remember the 4th weekend in October. The Seaside Sashay is the 21st & 22nd of October. Come join the fun.

Hoedowners - Link
July always starts off with a bang and celebration on the 4th and the Hoedowners kept the celebratory mood going all month. On the 9th we celebrated our 50th state, Hawaii, with a Luau themed dance. The ballroom was adorned with grass skirts, leis and tiki. What other state has its very own style of clothing? The dance floor was filled with dancers dressed in a myriad of colors with hibiscus, palm trees, surf boards, plumeria, shells, waves and sunsets. Tropical is as tropical does; a cool, relaxing, enjoyable evening.

On the 23rd we celebrated that great American beverage root beer with our annual Root Beer Float Dance. What is the ingredient in root beer that gives it that unique taste; sassafras. Root beer is the peanut butter of the beverage world; only North Americans seem to like it. The ice cream must definitely be frozen and the root beer icy cold but the debate continues, which goes in the glass first, ice cream or root beer? It was a lively group enjoying a summer evening.

The Summer Festival in Seaside was a great way to celebrate the season; great fun, great music, great callers and great weather (mist doesn’t count at the coast). Nothing says summer like sand in your shoes after dancing on the beach. Nineteen Hoedowners gathered for dinner Saturday night and a smaller group partied under the stars after the dance. We send a special thank you to the TVC team who put the weekend together.

Whoa, September is coming up fast. On the 10th, we’ll have our Back To School Dance. Please bring school supplies to donate.

New dancer lessons begin Wednesday, Sept 21. We all know what a great teacher our own Daryl Clendenin is so if you’re looking for a way to get restarted or to introduce a friend to square dancing, please join us.

September 24th will be our Celebrate the Harvest Dance with fresh fruit and veggies highlighting the menu.

Long time readers of this column will remember when I wrote about people coming to dances wearing a scent strong enough to cause allergic reactions in others and of our having to refund dancers’ money because of it.

People who wear strong fragrances all the time probably don’t realize that their perfume/cologne may be too strong for others. If you have a question as to whether the scent you are wearing is too strong, check with someone before going to the dance and ask for an opinion. That can keep a square from breaking down because one or more dancers can’t dance with their nasal passages plugged.

R Square D - Link
R Square D has been enjoying the lazy days of summer. On July 13th everyone broke out their fanciest Denim clothing and 4 squares of dancers kicked it up to the calling of Steve Noseck with Lonnie Sycks cueing. Good visits were had from the clubs of Harbor Haylofters and Cougar squares. The evening was cooled off with Ice cream sundaes.

On July 27th we honored the heat of the month with a Hot Summer Nights dance. Plenty of heat was offered up by Craig Abercrombie’s calling and Lonnie Sycks Cueing. Four squares kept the floor moving with visitations from Harbor Haylofters, Cougar Squares and Stardust dancers. Dancers enjoyed root beer floats in the cool of the hot summer night.

R Square D will go back to its regular schedule in September. The first dance will be on Friday September 9th and it will be a Crazy Necktie Dance, It will be fun to see what shows up for this dance. Saturday, September 24th will be our Harvest dance as we welcome in Autumn. Dance times will be Plus from 7:00- 8:00 with mainstream from 8:00 -10:00.

The Sunset Promenaders had a “Hot Diggity Dog” dance on July 2nd and it was well attended and fun. After our dance we had the “All American Hot Dogs” at the break and they were good.

July 7th we had Darrell Kalmbach calling and a guest cuer Lonnie Sycks and as usual we all had fun.

We enjoyed the Summer Festival in Seaside Convention Center on July29th & 30th. It is was a lot of fun and was cooler weather compared to the Portland area. The Seaside Convention Center is the same place the Seaside Sashay will be held this October 21st and 22nd. Now would be a good time for people to get signed up for the Sashay including getting some lodging reserved. Call 503-848-3841 for registration form and information.

In September we are looking forward to the “Apple Everything” dance on the 17th. Come visit us; join us for a good time with Mike Stout calling and Ken Pratt cueing.

This month we are having three Promenaders Plus dances; September 1st, 15th, 29th. Come enjoy Darrell Kalmbach, and Ken Pratt calling and cueing.

What a beautiful summer we have had. Dancing in the summertime is so much fun. We were so proud of KC and Linda working hard at Summer Festival down in Seaside. What a beautiful weekend.

Toe’s summer campout down in Lincoln City this August was a blast. Thanks Jerri and Doug Reese for getting it organized and giving us a tremendous weekend. We always bring back such great memories from our times together as a club.

September is moving along with our new officers setting up our year schedule and activities. Square dance classes will begin on Wednesday nights in September. Check the Toe Dragger’s website for time and dates. Classes will be held at the Kinton Grange. Round Dance lessons will begin in January with Bev and Harlan, also at our grange. Speaking of the grange, a new activity has been established for everyone to come and enjoy. Come and bring dancing and non- dancing friends. The Kinton Country Antique Faire will be going on Sunday Sept. 11th from 9 to 4 p.m. So many fun items to stop by and see and buy. The proceeds go towards helping the grange to stay open for all community activities, including square dancing. We love our Kinton Grange. See you in a square.

September ushers in football season and we celebrate our many great teams in Oregon with our Tailgate Dance and chicken barbecue September 17th. Please join us to savor the luscious barbecued chicken prepared by our chefs Larry, Tony & Joy. Dinner at 6:15, Mainstream with rounds 7-9, Plus at 9. Daryl Clendenin is scheduled to call with Connie Clark. We also welcome you to our dance September 3. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling that one.

Want to strengthen your Mainstream skills and learn All Position and Dance By Definition? Perhaps you women may even want to learn the opposite part so you have more choices at dances and less time on the sidelines. Join us in our Mastering Mainstream Class taught by Darrell Kalmbach starting September 13th, 7 p.m. at Aloha Grange. We will brush up on Mainstream before moving on to the more challenging choreography.

We finished our Basics lessons in July. What a nice bunch of students, running from 9 year olds through grandparents.

Members had a great time dancing on the Newberg Tennis Courts to the calling and cueing of Randy Dibble and Julie Stiers in our July Visitation.

We are grateful to Terry Halley and Ian Craig for stepping in as guest callers during our July dances.

The Wave Steppers’ September dance (Saturday, Sept. 10th) will be an “Elvis Dance” (it’s also our Anniversary Dance), with caller Mark Wheeler as Elvis, and cueing by Connie Clark. October’s “Fall Dance” Oct. 8th -- our last dance of the season -- will have club caller Joe Wrabek, and line dancing with Gwen Kiel. Dancing starts at 7 p.m.

The Wave Steppers’ dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth Street (just a block off US 101, 9 miles north of Tillamook). About two-thirds of the second floor of City Hall is a dance floor, built in the 1940s for the old Firemen’s Balls.

A new round of square dance classes will begin in September, taught by club caller Joe Wrabek; these are on Wednesdays, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook. Classes are free.

Douglas County Fair: The Buckeroos, Timber 8’s and Dancing Friends spent four nights dancing at the Douglas County Fair this month. The weather was a little more warm than we might have liked but a breeze helped keep us cool as we whirled and twirled across the dance floor. It’s always a treat to dance under the stars with the sights and sounds of the fair surrounding us. The yummy fried bread and other treats after the dance are a bonus.

Save the Date “ Veteran’s Day

Summer is winding down, so it’s time to think about fall and make a note to save the date of November 11th if you are thinking about joining us on Veteran’s Day. We will be walking in the Roseburg Veteran’s Day parade again so dust off your red, white and blue square dance finery and head for Roseburg if you are able to join us. We also have room in the back of the truck if you would rather ride than walk. For more info take a look at our flyer or call Frank at 541 672-0964.

August was a super busy month for us in Roseburg.

Thirty one volunteers kicked off the first Saturday in the month by meeting at the Fair Grounds at 8am with sunscreen and water bottles in hand to construct the dance floor so we could dance in the evenings during fair week. After three hours of loading, lifting and bending the floor was in place and the trailer was decked out as a stage with white lights looking sparkly and spiffy.

That night, for the first time ever, the women were treated to a “Ladies’ Night Out” at the Barn. Janienne Alexander called and Marion Cook cued. The men were in charge of making the coffee, tending to the kitchen etc. while the ladies enjoyed the night off. Craig Allen deserves a super big pat on the back for keeping the kitchen looking spiffy along with a few other fellows.

Four evenings of dancing at the fair kept our dancers busy despite the warm weather.

Sunday morning bright and early after the fair ended nineteen volunteers came out to pick up the floor and return it to the barn. We also enjoyed a Watermelon Dance later in the month, and you guessed it....there was plenty of watermelon to snack on!
