Oregon Federation News
October 2016

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 October 2016
President's Corner

Hello everyone. Here’s hoping the first dances of the new season have been successful with everyone anxious to dance and clear out the cobwebs if they have not been dancing a lot during the summer.

As I write this, it is raining and a good day to stay home and get caught up on paperwork, which is what I have been doing.

When I was installed two weeks ago, I mentioned I was the sender when I spoke to the officers and delegates and they were the receivers. Then all of them would be the senders when they went back to their areas and shared all the information they learned at the state meeting.  As you read this, you are the receiver. You will be the receiver when a dancer approaches you for information or asks a question of you for you to follow up on with the area council or state Federation. Do so with a smile on your face and get back to them as quickly as possible with an answer or a direction for them to follow to get more information on their own.

I still have a few state directories for sale. First come, first served.

They were done camera ready this year and the result was OK but still needs a little tweaking to make it perfect. Corrections will be listed elsewhere for what I have received so far.

I will be doing some traveling during my presidency and if you would like me to attend a particular event, give me enough lead time to make plans around my regular schedule of home club and part time care for my mother.

See you at Mid-Winter, if not before. Come say hi and let me know who you are and where you are from if I don’t already know you.

Marilyn Schmit

President

Editor's Note

I know some people complain about the heat, but I'm going to miss summer.

Last minute update: the dance mentioned below honoring our award winners has been rescheduled due to a conflict, from October 9 to April 8

Hello from the Milton-Freewater Muddy Frogs! The M-F Community Building, 109 NE 5th, home of the Muddy Frogs, will be the site of a dance on Sunday, October 9 honoring Bill and Neva Reid for the Parker Award and Merri Anne Huber for the MacGregor Award. We are a small club, so we are especially proud that half the awards at the last Washington State Festival went to Muddy Frogs! The dance, which will be sponsored by the Blue Mountain Council, will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be called by Jim Swanson. We would love to see your smiling faces! As we are on the border with Washington, our club belongs to the Blue Mountain Council of Washington, as well as the Blue Mountains Council of Oregon. How's that for confusion! For further information, please call Merri Anne at 541-861-9055.

Keep on dancin'!

Summer has been quite busy for the Shufflers. We started off by cleaning one mile of the highway coming into Prineville as part of the Adopt A Highway program. In July we visited the Red Rocks in Redmond and danced on the council float in the Crooked River Round-Up Parade. As we were dark in August we had a picnic in the park with Jim Steele calling a few tips. We had a good turn out of club dancers with two squares at the picnic. We ended the summer with a few of us going to the 3rd Friday Night Stroll demo dance in Redmond. We are moving our club dances from Powell Butte back to Prineville in September. Our new dance hall has a cork floor covered in Pergo; the sound is great. We are happy to be back in our own stomping grounds. Shufflers beginner square dance lessons begin October 6. If you are ever visiting Prineville come check us out.

Greetings for the fall season:

On the last dance of August we experienced excellent dancing with Jim Voll's smooth calling for our Western Hoedown dance. He was in peak performance and we all enjoyed it. Thank you Jim. And on first dance in September with Jim Hattrick, we had scads of visitors. It was wonderful to have a big crowd to welcome Jim as our 2nd Friday caller. And a big thanks for the other callers who did their turn for a tip. Thanks to everyone who came, participated, brought food, worked in the kitchen, and enjoyed the free dance. It was a real winning formula.

Hope to see some visitors for our Halloween dance on October 28th. We will have prizes for the best costumes in several categories. Come and have a "bootiful" time.

We've been increasing our numbers lately which is a wonderful thing. David Funk and his partner Keng are moving from Virginia to the west coast and danced with us a few weeks before heading out. We're thrilled they are closer.

Do you have friends who would like to learn square dancing? Tim will be teaching Beginning Square Dancing starting September 18 at 5:30. There are always lots of angels to help which makes learning easier.

Do you want to learn Advanced? Tim is teaching Advanced starting September 18 at 5:30. We'll flip flop levels during the evening so there's something for everyone.

October 16 is the special Spin Cycle Squares and Cast-a-Shadow Advanced and C-1 Dinner/Dance with Richard and Leslye Lane. 3:00 - 3:30 - C-1, 3:30 - 5:00 - A-2 Dance, 5:00 - 6:00 - Potluck, 6:00 - 6:30 - C-1 Workshop, 6:30 - 8:00- A-2 Dance and 8:00 - 8:30 - C-1. This special dance is in lieu of the Advanced and C workshop always held at the coast in Garibaldi. $8 This dance will be held in Hall A.

Kris Jensen, national caller from Albuquerque will be calling a special dance November 19 at the hall. 3:00 - 4:30 will be Advanced and Mainstream and Plus from 5:30 - 8:00. $7 for each session. We'll have our famous Silent Auction during this dance as well. This is a Saturday so we will not be dancing November 20. A potluck will happen between the two sessions. We are famous for our potlucks. This dance will be held in Hall B in the back of the hall.

Please come and join us any Sunday and for our special dances. Our dances are always casual. Happy Dancing

It’s that time of year again and our Tuesday night classes for new dancers with Sandy Harris are underway since September 13th. Next set of Basic 51 square dance lessons starts in mid-November.

We had our “Back to School Dance” on September 3rd. Due to Labor Day weekend and the Ducks season opener, the turnout was light as expected, but those who came really enjoyed the dance.

Our next dance will be October 1st. Thinking ahead, November 5th will be our “Harvest Dance”. Hope you can come and join in on the fun.

Wow! Summer really hit in August! Once again, our camp-out was without campfires due to high fire danger. Luckily, this year we were still able to have one. Thousand Trails at Pacific City includes a lodge with a swimming pool and an upstairs area we could dance in so we took the chance to invite campground guests to dance with us Saturday night. We had several folks among the observers who tried Square Dancing and they all said they enjoyed it very much. The Campground would love to have dancers come do this regularly! Leonard is really great at encouraging and teaching people and keeping it fun. Sandra cued between tips to showcase Round Dancing as well. We danced and laughed a lot!

Six club members also visited the Sunset Promenaders and had a wonderful time there. We are looking forward to dancing and hope to see you in a square! Our new dance year on the third Saturday as well as new lessons began in September. We bought a huge banner that is hanging on the main street of McMinnville and we hope it brings us lots of new dancers.

As I write this, we're looking ahead to our fall lessons starting on September 26, and we're hoping for a good-sized class. Our dance season started on Sept. 10 and we're grateful for the refinished wood floor at our dance hall. Later, in October, we're having our yearly Halloween dance on October 22 and it will be a fun and festive time! Happy Autumn everyone!

With Summer now over and Fall in full swing, we are settling into our dance year. Our new dance hours seem to be working out well and the dancers are really enjoying the change.

We had a great time at our second annual Sock Hop. The costumes were terrific. Our next special dance will be our Veterans Day Dance on November 12. All veterans will be admitted to the dance free of charge as a token of appreciation for their service.

Our new dancer’s class is off to an amazing start and the students are very enthusiastic. Happy Dancing.

During the summer, our club seems to have had lots of fun -- gathering, eating, playing games, and some dancing.

Charlotte and Bill Jeskey entertained lots of dancers at a variety burger barbecue /potluck on Sunday, August 21 at their home. Great food and great fun!

Labor Day weekend at the Cawrse farm was also a wonderful time. Potluck on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights meant lots of super food. There were 10 campers staying with Frank and Marianne for the weekend. Then on Sunday afternoon, Charlotte called from the heights of the silo -- Silo Dance. What a glorious weekend! Besides the Lebanon Square Circlers, other clubs represented were Silver City Squares, Sweet Home Squarenaders, and Willamette Squares.

Our first dance of the fall was on September 17, 2016 at the IOOF Hall in Lebanon

See you in a square!

Our last dance of the summer was a “Lick the Heat” dance. I think it worked as it was cooler and we got some rain. So we celebrated with ice cream and all sorts of goodies so we could “split it, float it, and a la mode it” in style. Pictures were sent to the OFN to show happy faces, and some pretty good imagination for what was put in the bowls to fill them up.

August has been spent on floor time in various rhythms to get better for the fall season. Next we start Foxtrot in the lesson time of 7:30-8:20 and continue on with Tango in the 8:30-9:30 time slot to finish off where we left off in July.

We have reserved the dance center for New Year’s Eve and will start making plans shortly so we can get some advertising out and get some attendance working.

Timber Twirlers are back dancing after a long fun summer. Lessons started Sept 20 and we hope to have a good class this year. Thank you to the State Federation for passing along the great division of money they received. We are making plans to use a lot of it for class promotion next year as we gather ideas on what best to do.

Oct 7 will be our annual Talk Like A Pirate dance. It is always a well attended dance and great pirate gear worn by a lot of our visitors make it even more fun.

We have lots of creative themes for our dances this year so come join us the first and third Fridays of the month at the IOOF Hall, 738 SE 5th in Albany.

Grab your saddle shoes and join us for our annual 50s dance on Friday, September 23. Randy promises to dig out his 45s and spin some rock and roll to keep us jitterbugging in our squares. A half hour of plus starts at 7:30 with mainstream and rounds at 8:00.

Welcome home, Jan and Terry, from the cruise adventure of a lifetime around the British Isles and France. Speaking of cruising, spotted frequently off the Oregon coast cruisin' for salmon are Stan and Teija. Many club members will cruise up to Bend for a September 30 benefit dance at Pine Forest Grange where Randy is calling Friday night and holding a workshop on Saturday morning. Once again, Lori and Don are opening up their home and ranch for dry camping.

We expect a great turnout from our club at the Seaside Sashay in late October. Between dancing and catching up with square dance friends, it's always a weekend full of great fun.

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares dancers have been busy. In July we had our "Fun in the Sun" square dance and in August was our "Watermelon" dance. As you might very well guess, refreshments in August consisted of watermelon and plenty of it! Sandy even did her "Watermelon Crawl" singing call. As always, we had a great time dancing and eating watermelon.

Our annual square dance picnic was held at Bethany School. Despite the warmer temperature, there was a cool breeze blowing through the covered area where our tables were set up. There was an ample supply of good food and an opportunity to visit. Of course, we danced, while a few others enjoyed watching. A good time was had by all!

A highlight this summer was the 60th wedding anniversary for longtime square dancers, Brice and Nancy Baker. Their daughter, Karen, also a square dancer, hosted a luau in their honor. The theme was Blue Hawaii, and if one didn't know better, you would have thought you were in the island paradise of Hawaii. The Uke-de-do's, a ukulele group from Woodburn, were there strumming and singing Hawaiian songs, and I hear tell Elvis was in the house singing some of his hits. The food was traditional and delicious and the hula was the dance of choice. It was a memorable celebration for a lovely couple who claimed their 60th wedding anniversary was more elaborate than their wedding!

Coming up mid September the Willamette Squares have been invited by the Youth with a Mission to entertain at their Fall Staff Conference in South Salem. Members from Willamette Squares will demonstrate and teach the staff square dancing. It will be an enjoyable time for all.

Willamette Squares would like to remind everyone of a few upcoming changes. We will be going dark on the fourth Saturday of October which is our regular square dance time at the Salem Square Dance Center. Instead will be our birthday dance the next day on Sunday, October 23 at 1:30. We will also be going dark on the fourth Saturday of December, which is the 24th, and in its place on January 8, 2017 at 1:30 will be our New Dancer dance. Then on the fourth Saturday of January 2017, on January 28, Willamette Squares will be dark because of Mid-Winter.

We hope everyone has enjoyed a summer full of dancing and fellowship.

Aug 16 marked our community event at Burgerville. We brought in $211, half of which we’ll donate to the PAC. We also got $12 in the tip jar. There was no caller to call a tip, so we’re not sure where that money went.

We had a great visitation to the Valley River Dancers Aug 26. Even the illusive B&B limo showed up! Club chauffeur, Mo Mopar, was at our service.

We had a good representation at the Oregon State Fair dance demo’s. Free dancing, free fair “ what else could a person want?

And we’ll have a good representation at the Seaside Sashay. Former mud wrestling champ Mary Theirl has gotten out her bikini, ready to make a comeback. You don’t mess with Mary! You gotta come see her, covered with mud, and maybe nothing else. 5:AM Saturday morning, at the turn-around (so I’m told).

Plans are being finalized for our new bathrooms at the grange. The guys already have a great sauna and hot tub (so I’m told), but the new ones will be even better (so I’m told). Just listen to Ace Reporter Lotta for all the latest B&B news!

Happy fall you all! It has been cool a rainy this past week so I am having to face the reality that fall is coming. As I write this, we haven't had our first dance yet but lessons start Sunday and the next weekend is our first community dance party. We are trying something new this year. Our first 4 dances will be community dance parties that are open to everyone. Casual attire. We will be teaching some basic moves so everyone will be able to be on the floor to dance. Those dances will be on 9/17, 10/1, 10/15, and 11/5. We'll keep you posted. Better yet, come join us.

We are adding plus lessons at 5pm on Sundays followed by mainstream at 6pm.

We dance to the fabulous KC Curtis, caller and Debbie Combs, Cuer extraordinaire at the Hazel Dell Grange on the first and third Saturday with pre-rounds at 7:30 and main stream at 8pm. See you in a square!

Our club has been trying a number of new things to get the community involved in our activities. Our mainstream lessons start September 15th, and at this writing, that has not happened, yet. Stay tuned and next month there will be an update on the success. We have invited the community to a couple of activities at the Boring Barn, a July 2nd picnic and a murder mystery dance, and community turn out has been minimal. Those events, however, were well supported by the square dance community, so thank you for that. The other thing we have done, is to go out into the community where they congregate. We did a demonstration dance at the Day in Damascus at the end of July, and served ice cream at the Boring and Dull Day in August. At each event, we talked to people attending and passed out class flyers. We will pass out more flyers at the Celebration in Boring on September 11th. We have posted signs, put information on our reader board and posted events on social media sites. Overall, a large effort has been put forth by our club. Will the sowing reap a good crop of new dancers? Stay tuned!

October is a busy month at the Barn. Our 56th Anniversary Dance is on October 1st, we have a general club meeting on October 2nd and a Burgerville fundraiser on October 3rd. If you eat at the Burgerville in Gresham at Stark and Hogan, between 5 and 8 PM, we will get a percentage of the proceeds. Then our third Saturday dance will happen on October 15th and the next day, October 16th will be our annual fundraiser Ham, Eggs, and Pancake Breakfast and Bazaar. We will be raffling off a beautiful hand embroidered tablecloth and a night and the Clackamas River House Bed and Breakfast. October 21st and 22nd, many Cut-Ups will be in Seaside for the Sashay. October 23rd we will be hosting some foreign exchange students and their host families to teach some basic square dance moves and serve up some American food dinner. This will be another fundraiser for our club. We will finish out the month with a 5th Saturday dance on October 29th with a Halloween theme. Come join us for some of these activities!

Happy Hoppers - Link
The Happy Hoppers are celebrating Harvest time this month.

We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Square dance lessons for new beginners will start on Monday, November 7th at the Clark County Square Dance Center.

As always, we have Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center, with our club caller/cuer, Jim Hattrick. This month, it is the 1st and the 15th. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00. Our Harvest Days dance will be on the 15th, with pumpkin themed treats at the break.

There will be a Tri-Council dance on the fifth Saturday, October 29th, at CCSDC with Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman officiating.

The future of our venue, the Clark County Square Dance Center is still very much up in the air. A sale is pending, but before that can be culminated, there is some litigation taking place about property boundaries.

Annual Retreat

The Oaky Doaks will be having their annual retreat October 7th “ 9th at the Sun Lodge Retreat Facility in Wemme, Oregon (near Welches on Mt Hood). It will be a great time to get together with everyone who attends. There will be time for visiting, table games (bring your favorites), as well as opportunities for outdoor games and hiking (weather permitting). As usual, there will be some planned entertainment for Saturday afternoon and evening.

As far as accommodations are concerned, there are three dormitory style rooms with bunk beds (one female and one male). There are restrooms, complete with showers, in each area and are furnished to accommodate each gender. A room for co-ed sleeping is also available. There are also two rooms to accommodate those with physical needs that need special attention (electricity for machines, etc.)

The cost will be $40.00 per person / under 18 is $15.00 for the weekend. Saturday only will be $10.00. Money should be paid by Oct. 1st (or make arrangements with Bonnie Ivy). The names of anyone that will be attending the retreat is needed ASAP so we can plan activities for that many. This year the Oaky Doaks are opening the retreat up to anyone that wants to attend.

For more information or to sign up contact:

River City Dancers - Link
With the beginning of school, many of us in the square dance community are hopefully beginning new classes for mainstream dancing, including River City Dancers. This will be our last year of lessons taught by our caller, Les Seeley, with his retirement scheduled in February 2017. It is a glad/sad occasion for us all, who have come to love Les and his wife, Paula. They will be missed.

Our farewell flyer was designed by our very talented graphics person, Jolene Cummings. This celebration marks the end of a wonderful twenty-six-year run, and hopefully the beginning of a new one for River City. By the time we’re holding our February 2017 celebration, we should have a new caller/couple leading us into our next era.

I remember many years ago when husband Leonard and I announced Les as our River City caller when we visited other clubs. Several people hadn’t heard Les and expressed their condolences. Yes, that’s no joke! But those people hadn’t yet heard this man…this calling, hard-working genius and his ever-lovin’ wife, Paula.

Since I missed submitting our September River City article, I will note that Rocky and I very much enjoyed Summer Festival in Seaside. I hear it was an effort of love put together by just a few dedicated folks. We had a great time! Thank you, all of you! And by the way, if you’re a dancer who hasn’t yet managed to attend a Sunday morning “Heavenly Hoedown”, try to make it next time, either at Albany’s Winter Festival or next year’s summer festival in Salem. It’s worth gathering your aching dancing bones awake and limping over to the hall. The experience will put your heart back in singing mode!

Some of us enjoyed Diamond Lake instead of our traditional summer campout at Lone Fir. Between the lack of ol volunteers for the weekend at Lone Fir and a drastic raising of rates and restricting of facilities, we just couldn’t get inspired. Diamond lake offered a sweet alternative. Those who went said they had a wonderful time.

By mid-September, we will have refinished our ballroom floor at Milwaukie Community Center on 42nd & Jackson. It won’t affect River City’s dancing. Most of us don’t appreciate the work that goes into maintaining those precious wooden surfaces. We are dependent on volunteers and caretakers for these halls. Bert Labedz and Cathy Betzer have faithfully headed up once-a-month cleaning/repairing events. Thanks also to Jim Adams and Jim Jenkins, our hall “masters”.

River City’s Lesson Committee, headed by Nancy Day, is hard at work setting up our Lesson schedule. Mainstream starts on September 11, 2016, and goes from 5:00 to 7:00. We take some time off around the Christmas holidays and plan to graduate the class just before Mid-Winter at the end of January.

We hugely enjoyed our summer Picnic at Bert Labedz’s “ranch” at the end of August. It was better than ever.

One thing we won’t miss are the “steamy” casual dances we’ve been enjoying. As the weather cools, so do most of us “pretty up” with our fluff and skirts of one kind or another.

We’re looking forward to our October visitation to the R Square D’s in Longview. Quite a few River City Dancers come enjoy their Octoberfest dinner and dance on Saturday night, but also include the workshops; garage sale tour; and friendship. That club does a super job of making us welcome. I don’t think I’ve missed a single year. As always, Les Seeley and Tami Helms are our stars! Thanks, you-all!

River City Dancers enjoy our annual end-of-October beach trip at the Landmark Best Western in Lincoln City, which is at the southern end of those famous “Miracle Miles”. (That’s the part that used to be called “Taft”, as us old-timers remember). Because our club trip is the weekend after the Seaside Sashay, many of us may refrain from including that event. It’s hard to make choices, but time and pocketbook restraints sometimes limit our options. Rocky and I hope to include both.

Hugs to all!

Now that summer is over, we are planning several seasonal dances including the Halloween dance on the 28th. Look for our flyers at your dances. The clothing resale is October7th and should be a success. It is always nice to unload some clothing and get something new to wear.

We had many wonderful summer dances with air conditioning. So nice and cool even though it was so hot outside.

We have excellent parking in front of the hall as well in the back. We welcome couples and singles.

We had over 8 squares attend our Hahn Barn Dance with a wonderful respite from the hot weather. Thank you to Gary and Bette Hahn for their hospitality and the use of their barn and to caller Terry Halley and cuer Julie Stiers for a fun dance. Thank you also to everyone who attended and for the delicious potluck by the lake. The Sunset Promenaders won the TVC Banner for having the highest percentage of their club in attendance.

The next TVC event will be the Tri-Council Dance on October 29th. This fifth Saturday dance will be held at the Hazel Dell Grange in Vancouver Washington and will be hosted by the Evergreen Council. The Front Porch Trio, Jim Hattrick, Adam Christman, and Craig Ambercrombie, will be calling and cueing this dance. It begins at 7:30 with one half hour of pre-rounds and continues until 10:30 Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus.

Columbia River Dancers - Link
Members of the Columbia River Dancers met in a park-and-ride lot on September 10th to take a bus ride to the Washington State Fair where we met with what some said were 400,000 fair-goers that day. Almost 600 of us planned a surprise square dance. At exactly 2 PM in three different locations on the fair grounds (one place could not accommodate us all) dancers began what is going to be classified as the largest mob square dance in the world. We danced for about fifteen minutes and then tried to melt into the crowds. After signing in to show that we were indeed there and danced we had time to see the exhibits and have a burger loaded with Walla Walla sweet onions. If interested in seeing what the mob squad looked like, you can go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrtGoR7tXN8 and catch the action.

We rejoined our bus at 6 PM and traveled to Olympia where we visited the Do-Si-Dos and danced to callers Craig Abercrombie and Jim Hattrick. We finally arrived home about 12:30 AM tired but happy to be with so many of our great friends. Thanks go to Danny and Carol for making the busride so enjoyable, supplying us with BINGO games and snacks.

We were dark on the 24th of this month as the hall was used for an annual Clogger event. Being dark does not mean the CRDs do not dance. Instead, we made a visitation to the R Square D's.

The month of October is also unusual as we will be dark on the 22nd as most of our members will be attending the Seaside Sashay. WE WILL BE DANCING ON THE 8TH, HOWEVER. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling, and Dorothy Lowder will be cueing.

Another reminder that after you eat all of your turkey and zone out with Thanksgiving Day football Saturday, November 26th we will host national caller Dan Nordbye with Julie Stiers cuing... our first annual "Turkey Burn-off Dance!"

We welcomed five new members to our club after they graduated as Plus Dancers.

IMPORTANT: Our dance time changed. Dancing will begin at 1:00 pm and end at 3:00 with a short meeting for announcements at around 2:30.

Sometimes we do not dance but get together just to eat, relax, play some holey board baseball, and eat (repeat is not a mistake) so our picnic at Noble Woods was a great success. Even Genevieve, our oldest member at 104, came to see how we were doing. It was amazing to see how forty people could put away chicken, beans, salads, and desserts. Holey board baseball is supposed to be a game of skill tossing beanbags through holes labeled with 1,2,3, HR, outs but I think it looked more like chance to me because my team only won by two points even though we were more skilled. When you see Sally and Mike Duyck give them a hug and say thank you for their work along with other club members for making the picnic a success.

Buy your ribbons for Seaside Sashay before October 7 to receive your discount! You will enjoy dancing to callers, Ray Brendzy and Richard Lane; and cuer, Debbie Taylor. The fun starts Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 pm and continues on Saturday at the Seaside Convention Center.

Opportunity awaits you. Come to dance with us on Halloween Monday wearing your most terrifying costume. Are you thinking about politicians! You were? You will be able to dance with or without costume but I marvel at the creativity members have. At least you will have your photo taken to appear on the front page of the Newsletter and maybe even in the OFN! You can be a celebrity!

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 12:30-2:30 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

We are dancing twice a month, the 1st and 3rd Friday at 6:30. We have not been able to get enough people together to have lessons for several years, but we have had one or two people want to start lessons every once in a while so we have been doing half lessons, half dancing. It is not the best solution, but hopefully we will be able to get a few more members. Please call before you come to visit to make sure we have enough people for dancing. We do thank the Wave Steppers for helping us. Remember the Seaside Sashay in October, the 21st and 22nd. It is a lot of fun.

By the time you read this, we should be back to more moderate weather. This summer we had to cancel once in June, once in July, and once in August due to the excessive heat on those days. It helps having a webmaster who keeps our website up to date so dancers can check online for such happenings.

November 5th we will celebrate our 32nd birthday with lots of great dancing, as well as birthday cake and ice cream. Come join us. Four charter members are still members. Lindie Noonan has offered to put together three containers of M&Ms for the usual chance to guess how many little candies are in each one. The best guessers take home their prizes.

We are happy to welcome new members Rick and Robin Faltersack.

R Square D - Link
Where has the summer gone? R Square D had a busy summer. In August we had two "Demo" dances. One was at Canterbury Park where one of our members, Jean Turner, lives. The next day we danced for the Castle Rock Senior Center's annual picnic. Food was served at both of these demos and you know how square dancers love to eat. Some of our members also visited River City Dancers and enjoyed the calling of Les Seeley & Rene Rudd and cueing of Tami Helms.

At our Back to School Dance on August 24 we collected over $100 worth of school supplies to be donated to a local school. Also that evening our Caller, Craig Abercrombie work shopped the dance "Running Bear". We had fun with it and hope that we will be able to play with it again at a later date. We had visitors from Las Vegas, and Cougar Squares.

Lessons are starting in September. Craig will be teaching "fun" starting on the 19th. Let's see how many lessons people we can share the fun with.

For more information about the R Square D club please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

The Club had an enjoyable picnic at Noble Woods Park with lots of good fellowship and great potluck food.

Several of the club went down to the Wave Steppers on the 13th of August for a good time.

In August the Sunset Promenaders went to the TVC Hahn Barn Dance and won the TVC attendance banner for the highest percent of the club.

Several club members went to the State Fair and did a demonstration of round dance with Ken Pratt our club cuer doing the cueing.

We are busy planning the Seaside Sashay at the Convention Center to be on October 21st and 22nd this year. We are looking forward to having Ray Brendzy, and Richard Lane calling and the cuer will be Debbie Taylor again. Fill out the registration form and mail in if you have not yet done that.

October 1st the Sunset Promenaders are having their 32nd Anniversary. We will be dancing to Dan Preedy calling and Ken Pratt cueing. The evening format will be 6:30 with a full dinner meal, with pre-rounds at 7:30, and mainstream dance starting at 8:00 until 10:00 with dessert to follow at the Odd Fellows Hall on Main St. in Hillsboro. Please come help us celebrate in our air-conditioned hall.

The Tri Squares had a very fun summer visiting other clubs. We also had our Annual Summer Picnic. At the picnic we had one of our members play music, another told jokes and we played lawn games. Our lessons started in September. If you’ve already tried square dancing and want to give it another try we’d love to have you. Our lessons are on Sundays at 3:30PM until 5:30PM. The Tri Squares is also holding Waltz lessons from 2:00PM to 3:00PM.

We now dance on the Second Saturday and Fourth Friday of every month. Our Caller is Terry Halley and our Cuer is Sandra Pinion. We look forward to seeing you at one of our dances.

Tualatin Timber Squares has had a wonderful summer with visitations from clubs and new dancers. Everyone agrees the ice cream parties each dance was a big hit! We graduated 3 new dancers who are loving it and became new members of our club before their lessons were over!

First time coming to our club? Let us know at the door we have a special dangle for you!

Now is the time to start shopping for your Ugly Christmas Sweater or skirt. Don’t wait! They go fast at the thrift stores. You’ll want to have one because we’ll have prizes at our big party in December. Details to follow.

September 14th we had up and coming caller Courtney Sewell from New Mexico sharing the stage with our club caller Janienne Alexander. What a privilege to host her during her vacation!

Come join us in October when the weather is cooler, the club's chili and cornbread hits the spot and we'll kick up our heels and dance the night away!

Valley Squares - Link
Valley Squares will be dark for our first dance in October, but we are very excited that National Caller and Oklahoman Scott Bennett will be in town to call our October 15th Dance. According to his web page:

Scott began calling in 1984 at the age of 18. He has called festivals and special dances in his home state of Oklahoma and across the United States. Scott currently calls for beginners thru A-2. Scott takes pride in his enthusiastic presentation, choreographic creativity, musical variety, "high-energy"/"up-beat" dance delivery, sense of humor, and vocal style. He is a CALLERLAB Accredited Caller, a member of the CALLERLAB Quarter Century Club, a member of CALLERLAB, and is involved with many local area caller associations as well. In 2015 Scott became a member of the CALLERLAB Board of Governors.

Scott has recorded Square Dance Music on Dance Ranch Records, Hi-Hat Records, Blue Star Records, Rawhide Records, and Chic Recordings. In 2013 Scott started his own Square Dance music labels! Check out Crest Recordings and Acme Recordings! He was a nominee and finalist in the first ever international Square Dance Callers Awards "The Ozzie's". He is honored to have been nominated and proud to make the finals in four categories in a worldwide caller competition! Scott placed as follows, Best Male Vocal on a Singing Call - 5th place, Best Overall Male Caller - 5th place, Most Entertaining Caller - 7th place, Caller of the Year - 6th place!!!!

We hope the square dancing community turns out in full force for this dance.

August was a busy month. We had a wonderful picnic at Rood Bridge Park. Families played croquet, kicked the soccer ball around, chased Frisbees, and visited under the pavilion on a lovely day.

We had fun at our visitation to Hayshakers, and we laughed at the antics of the Country Cut-Ups Players during their Murder Mystery Dance. We won a flag from Hoedowners when a square of us showed up to dance to National Caller Steve Noseck.

Stalwart efforts by Connie Clark, Larry Siemer, & Sharon Tefelske kept the air conditioning going so we were able to hold our Ice Cream Float Dance. The irrepressible Jim Hattrick kept us hopping with some creative choreography. Earlier in the month, Darrell Kalmbach and Connie Clark made sure we weren't doing any false advertising at our Summertime Fun Dance.

Fall has arrived and things are settling down here at the Buckaroo Barn. Lessons began a few weeks back and we have 25 new students. Most of our students are brand new dancers, but we do have few recent graduates acting as angels. Our youngest new student is 10 years old….our oldest is 78 years old!

Our dances went great this past month with lots of dancers out on the floor. We also had a few visitations this past month. All of the practice is helping our newest members become awesome dancers!

The Buckeroos are looking forward to joining the Umpqua Area Council and marching in the Roseburg Veteran’s Day Parade.

Happy dancing,
