Oregon Federation News
November 2016

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 November 2016
President's Corner

As November approaches, it will be time to think of holidays that are coming and how far along your classes have come. Does your club invite the class members to a holiday dance and get them acquainted with more club members and show them what fun they can have during a regular dance? That same fun can happen at class if the club members are involved as angels, party planners for short notice happenings, etc

With winter coming, how far from home will you travel to support your club or another club in the area? How much does weather dictate your dancing activities?

As of the printing of this article, I will have attended a function in four of the ten councils in the Federation. Six more to visit, attending Mid-Winter, Summer Festival, and going to Cincinnati to play and represent Oregon at  the national convention. Once all that traveling is done, I will have earned my second Federation Traveller bar. How many of you venture all over the state to dance and make new friends? Try it and find out how rewarding it can be. The clubs you visit will remember how you took time out of your schedule to support their event.

Happy Thanksgiving and go dance off the pounds you gained.

Marilyn Schmit

President

Editor's Note

As we enter into our 3rd year of the online OFN, I do want to express my thanks to all of the area editors and club helpers around the state.  You're all doing a great job of getting your information in accurately and on time.

There does seem to be some confusion about the "Special Dance" section of the OFN.  If I allowed people to do it themselves, by simple human nature, every dance would be a special dance.  So, I have reserved that for me.  If you want a dance listed as a "Special Dance", you need to enter it as regular dance, just like you would any other dance.  Upload the flyer, and then drop me an email, telling me which dance it is.  I then have a special administrative site where I can mark dances as "special".  That's all it takes.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

We will have a Halloween Dance October 29. Pre-Rounds are at 7:30 and squares at 8:00. We have a number of newer callers and cuers who will be calling and cueing for you along with the "oldies". Dance is held in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. Cushioned wood floor. Costumes encouraged.

We have an all women board this year. Linda Putzler - President, Sandy Eddings - Vice-president, Christina Corelli - Secretary, Gail Jackson - Treasurer. We thank Sharon Greenman who held the treasurer's position since Pat Hintz passed away. Gail Jackson has worked with the bank to help save us money. Good job gals!

CCCA dances the Fifth Saturdays. Sometimes this coincides with major holidays though. i.e. Memorial Day when a lot of dancers are doing other things.

We encourage you to come out and dance with us on a Fifth Saturday.

Keep on dancing!

We had a wonderful dance month in September with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing at our first dance, and in addition to Craig Abercrombie and Al Frazier doing their 50s plus fling songs now and then at our second dance of the month. There were a few period outfits that helped with the mood. We had lots of guests and a really good time at both dances.

In November we have three dances, a regular mainstream dance with Jim Hattrick on November 11th (Friday), and the second on November 16th (Wednesday) for our new dancers - a Basic 51 dance with Sandy Harris calling from 7 pm to 9 pm at the ESDC Hall. Our last dance is November 25th - a Civil War Tailgate Party, the day after Thanksgiving. Girls Night Out is calling and Jackie Gale is cueing. Everyone who is staying close to home will have a great time coming to this dance and exercising off the extra pounds from the festivities you attended or created with family and friends. We hope to see you on the dance floor, whichever dance you can attend, and we especially encourage you to join our B-51 new dancers and angels if you can.

A number of our members attended the Women's Dance Retreat in Garibaldi recently. The dance floor is wood and a joy to dance on. The hotel is right across the street with a breakfast buffet that rivals expensive hotels' fares. The hotel has food out for later as well. This venue is also used for round dance weekends that Kirby and I used to attend.. Hopefully, I'll get to attend the women's retreat next fall. Sounds like too much fun to pass up.

We do have a few new dancers learning with us at 5:30. With so many angels learning is quick and painless. It's FUN to show the "newbies" how much FUN we have each week.

We are dark October 16 as that's Cast-A-Shadow's and Spin Cycle Squares special Advanced and Challenge day from 3:00 - 8:30 with a meal in between. We are also dark October 30.

Remember, November 19 we have Kris Jensen, national caller from Albuquerque calling a special dance 3:00 - 4:30 will be Advanced and Mainstream and Plus from 5:30 - 8:00. $7 for each session. We'll have our famous Silent Auction during this dance as well. This is a Saturday so we will not be dancing November 20. A potluck will happen between the two sessions. We are famous for our potlucks. This dance will be held in Hall B in the back of the hall.

We dance each Sunday from 5:30 - 8:00. All levels. Tim Matteson does a great job of teaching and calling. We are gradually increasing in numbers. Casual dress and smiles! Come and join us!

Happy dancing,

Christina Corelli

The Wolf Pack started off the month on October 1st with a fun Fall Dance assisted by our friends, the Boots & Sandals. If you weren’t here, you missed a great dance. There was certainly a lot of really good food. Thanks to everyone for their contribution.

Our next dance is a Harvest Dance on November 5th with the new dancers invited. Hope you can make it.

Lessons with Sandy Harris teaching, are going well on Tuesday nights. We can always use a few more angels. Come meet the new dancers and join in on the fun.

September brought us back together as a club after a summer break. We started on Friday evening with a visit to the Toe Draggers for their anniversary dance and brought home one of their banners! They are cordially invited to come retrieve it, too. What a big dance that was!

Saturday was busy with a demo at a local Rehab facility and a great potluck before our regular second Saturday dance. We had lots of fun dancing together again and dared Leonard Snodgrass, our caller, to wear a black and silver petticoat, which he bravely did to call several tips. His photo was even posted on Facebook! Our friends and former club members from California, Chuck and Trena Worthington, came to the dance, too!

Our Square Dance classes have just begun on Thursday nights and our cuer Sandra Pinion is teaching Cha. We look forward to lots more square dancing fun! Carmen

With the advent of Fall, we have started another beginner’s class. We have had a fairly good response with about 17 new people very excited about learning the art of clogging. We have also drawn our demo season to a close with the exception of accepting an invitation to clog on the steps of the Oregon Capitol for the Oregon Bounty Celebration which took place October 8. We are now in the process of nominating and electing officers for the upcoming year. Georganne Pfnister

Our new dancer’s class is off to a great start. We have 17 new dancers and they are having a wonderful time of learning.

As a club we have two extra special activities planned for the month of November. Our second Saturday night dance will be a Veterans Day dance on November 12. We will admit all veterans to that dance free of charge as a token of appreciation for their service. Our caller and guest cuer (Patty Hermann) will be using music through the decades for this dance.

We also have the honor of hosting the first New Dancer’s Dance of this season for the new dancers of the Mid-Willamette Area clubs. Happy Dancing! Linda Neuschwander

Our first dance in September was on the 17th of the month and it was a "Root Beer Float" dance. We had over three squares, with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Lots of fun!

Lessons started on Sunday night the 18th with ChaCha classes at 5:00 PM and Mainstream classes at 6:30 PM. There were lots of angels attending both the sessions. First lesson is FREE and we are hoping we will have a square of students.

Our first dance of October was a great dance. We are planning our "Black Light" dance for the 15th of the month. Our club also attended the Pirate Dance at the Albany Timber Twirlers and we will be joining the Corvallis Squares for their Halloween Dance on October 22. Both the Pirate Dance and the Halloween Dance are dances that we support as a part of our valley Alliance. We always have a great time. See you all in a square! Marilyn York

As I write this, tomorrow is October 1 and the club has finished the first month of Foxtrot class/workshops. We had no new students so we are working on various tricky moves in the phase 3-4 variations, and also workshopping moves and adding new dances to our list of dances we already know how to dance. Come join us. There is lots of room on the dance floor.

On the first Thursday of October and November we will be just dancing with no workshopping. We will preview our demo for Mid-Winter and start working on learning the dance. We need to look good, you know.

We will have a Christmas dance in December and we are going to start putting plans together for our New Year’s Eve dance, and figuring out another rhythm to work on in January. Got any suggestions that you would like to share with us? Marilyn Schmit

We are glad that everyone is ready to dance again. Our 5th Friday Plus dance in September was very well attended. Thanks to Daryl Kalmbach for calling. We all had a great time.

We had a Mystery Trip scheduled for October 15. There will be more information about that event in a later issue.

We are dancing our Regular schedule the month of November with our first and third Friday Dances. December 2 is our NEW DANCER DANCE so do come on out and support all the new dancers in our area. Randy is busy with a class of 15+ for this session. See you all on the dance floor. Sheila Machado

Our lessons started up in the beginning of the month, so that is nice.

Our youth had their workshop/dance followed by their overnight party. The kids had a blast at the party. Mom (Karyn Buchheit) had made a huge "Twister" mat and we played that for a couple of hours. We also learned some line dances and played some board games. We did dance two tips during the party.

Those who came to our September dance were treated to pie and ice cream. We also danced downstairs in the basement.

Our November dance is a "Storybook" theme. We are encouraging people to come dressed as their favorite story or nursery rhyme character. We are also having a ham dinner before the dance (we are cooking one of "the three little pigs"). Please come join us for some fun. Petrina Buchheit

We had our “Talk Like a Pirate Dance” and, as usual, we had a very good turnout. Our caller Bruce Lowther always finds some music appropriate to the theme and really dresses the part. I (cuer) also found some good pirate rounds. It was a lot of fun. We had a lot of dancers dressed as Pirates and Wenches which added to the enjoyment. Come join us for all of our fun dances. Our October "5th Saturday" advanced dance will be held the 29th at The Estates Auditorium in Woodburn starting at 7 pm.

We have been enjoying teaching mainstream to our students at 6:30 every Tuesday. We workshop Advanced starting at 8:00, and these old dogs learn something new every week! All A dancers are welcome to join us.

And, last but not least, it isn't too early to plan your New Year's Eve. We will be dancing plus (with every third tip advanced) at the Maplewood Grange. Please join us as we welcome 2017 with a dance and a toast! Perrin Damon

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares has had a busy month. We did a demo dance and provided the staff of Youth with a Mission some square dance lessons at their fall conference in South Salem. We then held our annual Oktoberfest dance with a German flair and plenty of sausages and sauerkraut on the refreshment table. Lessons on Sunday night at the Salem Square Dance Center could use a few more angels if anyone out there would like to volunteer to help.

Willamette Squares would like to remind everyone of a few upcoming changes. We will be going dark on the fourth Saturday of October, which is our regular square dance time at the Salem Square Dance Center, and in its place will be our birthday dance the next day on Sunday, October 23 at 1:30.

We will also be going dark on the fourth Saturday of December which is the 24th, but not all is lost because on January 8, 2017 at 1:30 will be our New Dancer dance. Then the fourth Saturday of January 2017, January 28, Willamette Squares will be dark because of Mid-Winter. We hope to see you all at our birthday and new dancer dances.

Sept 10, many of us went to the Washington State Fair in Puyallup, to go to the Flash Mob. Afterwards, we went to visit the Do-Si-Dos at the Lac-A-Do hall in Olympia. These consortium dance halls seem to be an anachronism from the past, and the only one in the Portland area will likely pass out of our control soon. But in some places, such as Olympia, they still seem to thrive, giving member clubs a guaranteed place to dance. (In most larger cities, real estate prices preclude dance halls unless there is a consortium dance hall. or unless alcohol is served.)

What a great visitation we had from the River City Dancers on Sept 21. While we have one of the better attended club dances around, we don’t get official visitations all that often. (Yes, the visiting banners are getting a bit dusty in our hall.) So, we especially welcomed the RCD group. We also note that it’s unusual for a club to be able to get the support to visit all council clubs each year, as the RCD’s do. For that reason, we gave them BOTH their banners back as they won’t be able to return for another year.

Rumor has it we will be getting another official visitation in October.

Happy November to all. At this point we are well into the new year of dancing and we have had some fun. For our first 3 dances we have had open "community" dance parties with nice turn outs. We have gained some new students for our beginners class from the open dances. We will restart our regular dances in November. We will be having a "Giving thanks" dance on 11/19/16 where we are asking those who attend to bring a donation for seniors living in local assisted living facilities. Some badly needed items are shampoo and cream rinse, soap, lotion, deodorant, socks with gripper bottoms, lap blankets, large print word search and cross word books, puzzles, calendars, and stationary. We have done this dance for the last 2 years and I am always humbled by the gratitude from the activities director and the residents.

Our beginners class is going strong. It meets on Sunday from 6-8pm at the Hazel Dell Grange. We dance the first and third Saturdays at the Hazel Dell Grange with pre - rounds at 7:30 and main stream at 8pm. Hope to see you in a square.

There is a chill in the air and Christmas decorations are already popping up in stores. Where does the year go? It has been a busy year at the Boring Barn and it is not over yet! September brought us a nice crop of students for our mainstream lessons which are ongoing. October harvested some nice community connections with some more demos, so we are hoping to keep some momentum going.

In September, several in our club participated in the Mob Squad square dance at the Washington state fair. We were trying to break a record for the largest flash mob square dance event. We ended the day with a dance with the Do-Si-Do Club at Lac-A-Do Hall in Olympia, dancing to the calling of Jim Hattrick. It was a fun day. Then, we had a visitation at the Hoedowners and heard Daryl and Yvonne Clendenin calling and cueing. In October, we will visit the B&B’s in Oregon City.

October 1st, we celebrated our 56th anniversary dance for the Country Cut-Ups with Craig Abercrombie calling and Julie Stiers cueing. Preparations are underway for the Annual Ham, Eggs, and Pancake Breakfast and Bazaar. We are thankful for all who attend that and help us raise money to keep our Barn maintained. We will close October with a fifth Saturday dance, all plus level dancing with a Halloween theme on the 29th. Terry Halley will be calling and Debbie Coombs with be cueing. Hope you can join us for that.

Happy Hoppers - Link
Late Fall is special. It's a time to take stock, give thanks for the bounty we share, and maybe dance a bit. The Happy Hoppers are thankful for the community that we have within our club, the extended community within our region, and for our ability to help keep alive this great American traditional dance form. We are surrounded by excellence. We have a first class venue, an outstanding caller/cuer in Jim Hattrick, and a spirit of cooperation second to none. It's Thanksgiving time and we give thanks for our blessings.

It's been a momentous election season, with a new POTUS being chosen this month. It's an unwritten rule that we don't talk politics, which can be divisive. Rather, we focus on what brings us together. The Happy Hoppers have meticulously followed that rule. My personal thanks to my fellow club members for keeping the noise in the background!

We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Square dance lessons for new beginners will start on Monday, November 7th at the Clark County Square Dance Center.

On Monday, October 24th, our semi-annual used clothing sale will take place starting at 6:30. There are always some great bargains to be had.

We will have a club dine-out on Wednesday, October 26th, at Gustav's, 1705 SE 164th Avenue, at 6:00. If you'd like to join us, please get in touch with Melissa James, so that she can let the restaurant know how many to expect.

The Happy Hoppers will have a banner-snatching visitation at the Columbia River Dancers' "The Beatles Dance" on Saturday, November 12th, at the Hazel Dell Grange. Mark Wheeler and Julie Stiers will do the honors. You'd better come because "I Wanna Hold Your Hand".

We usually have Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center, with our club caller/cuer, Jim Hattrick, but this month, it's different. We're going to be Dark on November 5th, deferring to the "Royal Romp", but back at it on the 19th. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00.

At the October 1st dance the Oaky Doaks did something for the first time that may become an annual event. Dancing and Bingo. During the shifts between squares and rounds the Bingo team of Susan, John and Gary entertained our visitors from the B and B’s by calling five Bingo numbers. Players then looked over the cards they had and prizes were given to the winners.

The next weekend, October 7th - 9th, we were off to Sun Lodge for our annual retreat. Members engaged in games, puzzles, walks, and lots of socializing. The big event for the weekend was the Play-Doh masterpiece which was won by the winning team of Robben, Linda S. and Jeanette. The Men’s Evening Snoring Contest was won hands down by Gary who not only had his roommates move to another room but was also heard by the ladies in their rooms.

On October 15th the club had a howling good time with several of the members getting into the spirit of the month by getting dressed up in costumes. All enjoying the spooky calling and haunting cueing of Mike and Helen Halley.

November finds the club gearing up to hold the trophy dance on Saturday, November 5th. Everyone knows how to win but just to remind everyone and to fill in the new dancers the club that shows up with the highest percentage of their members get to take the trophy home. Now you smaller clubs don’t let the bigger ones scare you away. The winner is determined by the number of dancers who show and the number of members you have in your club.

On the third Saturday, November 19th, the club will be gathering together for their Turkey Trot Dine and Dance with a crock pot casserole cook-off. Thankful for all the fun we have had together with all of the other square dancers who we visited and all of those who visited us.

We wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

River City Dancers - Link
One of the successes of our club is that River City Dancers love to angel. I attribute their affection and attendance to making my partner, Rocky Curtis, such an enthusiastic and successful dancer. Plus, our caller, Les Seeley and his frequent calling partner, Rene’ Rudd, add to the success of our classes. This year, we have around a dozen students.

I hear our Caller Selection Committee is hard at work. They’re expecting to begin the formal process of presenting possibilities to River City members for feedback starting February, 2017. I’m hoping that callers who feel inspired will step up and express their interest.

Change is always difficult when replacing the old with the new. Since my husband, Leonard, and I, began dancing in 1975, there have been countless changes. First to my mind is the cost of square dancing. When we began, door cost was only $5.00 PER COUPLE! That included a dance that ended at midnight. Afterward, we often would join the other dancers for pizza and not get home till after 2:00 a.m. Usually, there was a huge potluck at break. How did we do it?

Prairie skirts were frequently frowned on. All of us ladies were expected to wear fluffy petticoats and pantyhose and all the rest, of course, no matter how high the ambient temperature or how sticky the humidity. I cannot remember any hall where we enjoyed air conditioning, either, although fans were propped everywhere, sometimes tripping out the caller’s sound equipment circuits.

Yes, those were the “good old days”, but the “good old days” didn’t include highlights like the all day September 10th “Mob Squad” bus trip to the Washington State Fair in Puyallup. Another modern day “plus” are emailed newsletters, with plenty of color photos (courtesy of our beloved photographer, Jolene Cummings, and inspired newsletter editors, Phillip and Michelle Wood).

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before, but many years ago I was editor of our club newsletter, when it was literally, “Cut and Paste”, and everything had to travel by “snail mail”, and our club president wasn’t much for spelling or expressing himself. I was a busy “snipper”.

Plans are in the works for River City Dancers’ New Year’s Eve extravaganza, Mardi Gras, and before then Seaside Sashay and our annual Beach Trip at Landmark Inn at Lincoln City.

New friends, new dancers, new callers. Square dancing is smaller, but still very good, the best social event you can find!

Go into stores now and see all of the Christmas decorations being displayed. Wait!! It isn't even Thanksgiving yet. But with Thanksgiving comes some of the best square dancing in the area. Eat all of your turkey and zone out with Thanksgiving Day football and then on Saturday, November 26th The Columbia River Dancers will host national caller Dan Nordbye with Julie Stiers cuing... our first annual "Turkey Burn-off Dance"! We expect the Hazel Dell Grange will be rocking. Plus dancing will be from 7 to 8 and mainstream from 8-9:45 with rounds in between tips and goodies and fellowship after. If you are a mainstream newbee, or a single we encourage you to come. Our club works hard to ensure that everyone has a good time dancing.

On the 11th of November we pause to honor our veterans and on the 12th our very own Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing for your dancing pleasure.

September was very, very quiet for the club but the members themselves were very active. We danced at the Fair, we danced in Olympia with the Do-si-dos, watched the Horses dance and attended meeting about square dancing. We were dark the 4th weekend as the cloggers took over the Hazel Dell Grange and rocked the hall.

We have started our lessons this week. Thanks to all of our angels and to Jim Hattrick's teaching style, our students really looked good.

“Fall Back” on November 6 when DST ends. You do not want to arrive too early and wonder why nobody is there.

Our visitation to Toe Draggers was enjoyed by the square that attended. There were too many choices that night and we could not be everywhere at the same time. Many thanks to Toe Draggers and our members who attended.

We have several members are planning to attend Royal Romp the first weekend in November. This is always a special dance and if you have not been there and you want a challenging plus dance, be sure to go this year.

November has my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. This is the month I am reminded of all the wonderful experiences I have had with family and friends. I am so lucky to be alive and enjoying the natural world in all its diversity. We will have a Dine-Out October 31st at the Golden Crown on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway in anticipation of Thanksgiving. Sign up sheet will be at dance.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

September slipped by so quickly, one moment Labor Day is approaching, the next, fall rains return. I always feel it’s the sight of the school bus that signals the days to shorten and the nights to cool. We wanted to mark the return of the school year with our Back to School Sock Hop on the 10th. Thanks to all the Valley Squares who joined us on the floor.

We started out fall lessons on Wednesday, September 21st. This year we’ve added a new wrinkle, while new students are learning in their squares, our Angels are forming up and learning all position in squares toward the back. What a kick! If you’re interested in joining us and learning the “other role”, stop in on Wednesdays at 7.

September 17th we had a visitation to the Toe Dragger’s for their Anniversary Dance. They’re always a fun group to join. Their decorations were fabulous, and so was the food!

September 24th was our Celebrate the Harvest Dance and it did feel like harvest was in the air. The buffet table was filled with fall produce; tomatoes and corn are two favored fresh sweet treats. The Country Cutups had a great visitation, took home a vintage banner and jazzed up the evening. We had two other visitors that evening; Dietmar Neuger of the Silver Kiners and Monika Bolman from Nugold Valley. Are the club names new to you? Both dancers are from Germany and arranged to dance with us before they continued on their travels through the USA. Of course their conversational English was excellent and the our common language of square dance calls made them square up and dance all night without a hitch.

On November 12th we’ll be having our infamously famous Turkey Toss Dance. This is your opportunity to prove your prowess with a bean bag and to take home a turkey for the holidays. Unpredictable hilarity and prizes to boot don’t miss it!

November 26th is our Soup Night Dance and although this is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, we promise there will be multiple choices besides turkey.

We had a visitation to the Tualatin Timber Squares this month. What a fun group of people! We hope that other dancers will check them out. Janienne Alexander is the caller and founder of the club. They dance at on second and fourth Wednesdays at Winona Grange, where M'nM’s dance on first and third Saturdays.

We miss our friend Susan Corbett, who so often danced with us. She was tall and beautiful, with a winning smile. We appreciate her bequest to promote square dancing in Oregon.

November 5th we will have our 32nd Birthday Dance, complete with cake and ice cream. Lindie will have the usual jars of M&Ms (NOT M'nM’s) filled with the candies for people to guess how many to a jar. We aren't celebrating the famous British reason for celebrating November 5, Guy Fawkes Day.

It is that time of year again to begin stocking up on nonperishable goods for our food barrel. Long ago we collected teddy bears for the police station and the fire department. Eventually they had more than they needed, and other clubs were donating those. We felt that a Canned Food Dance was more needed. Since the grange has a barrel for collecting food for the Oregon Food Bank, the grange will deliver it, another plus for us.

It’s time to put away the long days of summer, finish up the last of the garden, and put on your dancing shoes. Even with the busyness of the end of summer R Square D had an active September.

On September 9th the theme was Crazy Necktie Dance, with caller Craig Abercrombie and Guest callers Tim Kayne from Molalla, OR and Egan also from Molalla, OR Cuer: Lonnie Sycks.

We enjoyed many visiting dancers from Harbor Haylofters, Cougar Squares, Happy Hoppers, Ruff and Ruffles, Floor dusters-Molalla, OR, Rosetown Ramblers and Country Cutups. Neckties were flying as 5 squares filled the floor for most of the dance.

The Harvest Dance was on September 24th. Craig Abercrombie and his good friend Al Frazier called and Lonnie Sykes did the cueing. Thank You Al! The club was really excited with all the visitors that came to join us in dance. We welcomed Happy Hoppers, Columbia River Dancers, Prairie Steppers, Cougar Squares, Ruff and Ruffles and Harbor Haylofter’s. Some of the evening found 7 squares on the floor enjoying the dance of the harvest. Finger foods were served and a good time was had by all.

September 19th was our club meeting at Dick and Sandy Sims home with pot luck, we then moved to the Rose Valley grange to prepare for our big event of the year, Octoberfest. It was September 30 to October 2nd. I hope you were able to attend.

November finds R Square D honoring our Veterans with a Veterans Day dance on the 11th; all veterans get into the dance for free that night. We close out the month on the 26th with the uplifting sounds of a good old Gospel dance. We are really looking forward to this one.

Fall Lessons: These will start on Wednesday, October 19th. Plus 6:30-7:30; Basic 7:30-9:00; Mainstream 9-9:30. Lessons will be Dark on 11/23, 12/21 and 12/28. Please join us as we welcome our new dancers.

For more information about the R Square D club please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

40 Club members and guests enjoyed the Club Beach Campout at Devils Lake Resort at Lincoln City. The weather was amazing with blue skies and warm temperatures with sun. At night we had blazing campfires, we did a poker run during the day Saturday, and there was a lot of visiting, laughing, and great food. Overall it was a great time with friends, and we did some dancing, too.

The Club visited the Toe Dragger Anniversary Dance where there was a full hall of dancers from around area. The break included many berry good treats; the hall was beautifully decorated for the festive occasion.

Several Sunset Promenaders visited the Tri Squares on their Anniversary Dance and danced to caller Dan Nordbye from Arizona. Dan did a very good job of calling and Sandra Pinion did a good job cueing.

Our Club cuer Ken Pratt is having intermediate round workshop including an introduction to Jive on Sundays from 6:30 to 8:00 at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall.

On Thursdays, November 3rd and 17th, are our Promenaders Plus dances with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Ken Pratt cueing. We have our Plus dances each month with pre-rounds at 7:00, Plus dance 7:30 to 9:30.

November 3rd will be our Second Anniversary for the Promenaders Plus. Come help us celebrate.

In November our dance theme is “Giving Thanks” at our Sunset Promenaders dances which are on Saturday the 5th and 17th with Mike Stout calling and Ken Pratt cueing. Our time scheduling is 7-8 Plus, and 8-10 Mainstream. Please come join us at our dances, we enjoy visitors and we have a very nice dance hall, caller and cuer, and always enjoy our break after the dance.

Toe Draggers - Link
October 21st, the Toe Draggers will be dancing at the Odd Fellows Hall in Hillsboro (267 East Main Street, Hillsboro). Costumes will be welcome.

During the month of November, the Toe Draggers will be collecting canned or nonperishable foods to donate to the Kinton Grange for their food baskets for local families. Please bring a can or two when you visit the Toes. Our first dance of the month will be our popular all George Strait, Singing Calls and Western Stampede & Chili Feed Dance. We will have several homemade varieties of chili for you to enjoy with your corn bread. Come and taste them all. On November 18th, we will have a Harvest Festival Dance, celebrating the start of the holiday season with good friends, music, and food.

The Toe Draggers’ new dancers’ jamboree will be November 20th, from 2:00-4:00 pm. Bring your students and hop on over to the Kinton Grange and dance the afternoon away. Square Dancing will be to the floor level of the students. Bev will be cueing level 2 & 3 rounds.

For over 60 years, the Kinton Grange has put on a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings the last Sunday in October. This year, the Kinton Grange is entering a new era. On Sunday, October 30th, from noon until 4:00 pm, the Kinton Grange and their friends from the Toe Draggers, Boy Scouts, and Brookhaven Bazaar will be putting on a Fall Feast with sausage, sauerkraut, German potato salad, green beans, applesauce, rolls, and dessert.

The Fall Feast is one of the Kinton Grange’s major fundraisers. Adults over the age of 12 are $15, children between the ages of 4-12 are $5, and toddlers under the age of 4 are free. For people who find stairs difficult, the Kinton Grange has an ADA-compliant elevator. If you want to use the drive through to order your dinner, stop by and say hi to the Toes on duty. The Toes will be back in the drive up area. Drive-through dinners will be available for $15 per dinner. Other events going on during the dinner include a canned food drive for local families in need, a quilt raffle, live music, photo booth and more.

Can you believe it’s already November? The Tri Squares has been enjoying their new students during lessons. We’re about halfway through with our B-51 lessons. We would love to see your students and angels at our B-51 dance. The theme is a Cowboy Country! The dance will be held on December 10th. The dance format is 7:30 - 7:45 PM rounds, 7:45 - 8:00 PM plus and 8:00 - 10:00 PM B-51. Every fourth tip will be plus.

We recently had our 18th Anniversary Dance during the month of September! We had a great time dancing with our friends. Our entertainment for the evening was National Caller Dan Nordbye and Cuer Sandra Pinion. There were 90 people in attendance at our dance. A big thank you to everyone who came to our dance! Our visitors made this dance a very special night.

We now dance on the Second Saturday and Fourth Friday of every month. Our Caller is Terry Halley and our Cuer is Sandra Pinion. We look forward to seeing you at one of our dances.

First time to our club? Let us know at the door. We have a special dangle just for you!

The Tualatin Timber Squares were seen all over Oregon and Washington in September. Our club members love to dance as often as they can! On September 10th we participated in possibly the largest Square Dance Flash Mob ever at the Washington State Fair! 600+ dancers from Washington, Oregon and Canada. What a great day to promote square dancing.

Mystery Caller! On October 12th we had a Mystery Caller scheduled to come to our dance to do a guest tip. Not the whole dance. Just one tip. We won’t tell you which tip or who the person is. The Mystery Caller is a national caller and coming right off the airplane and straight to our dance! You might never get another chance to dance to this person as this is off their normal circuit. So don’t kick yourself for missing out. Come on over and enjoy a great dance and some wonderful chili and cornbread!

Clubs be on the alert. There is a roving gang of Banner Bandits out to steal your banner! Oakey Doaks were hit at their Beatles dance. Toe Draggers were hit at their Anniversary dance. Are you next?

Ugly Christmas Sweater/Skirt dance - December 14th. Now is the time to start hitting the thrift stores or the deep recesses of your closet. We will have prizes and food and fun dancing!

Valley Squares is dark the first Saturday for Royal Romp. Please join us third Saturday where the lovely Renee Ruud is our guest caller & Connie Clark the cuer.

We began Our Mastering Mainstream lessons with teacher Darrell Kalmbach. He is excellent and is working not only muscle memory but our brains with All Position and Dance by Definition. You can still join us on Tuesday nights at Aloha Grange.

Thanks to the loyal club members who joined our visitations to Rosetown Ramblers & Tualatin Timber Squares & thanks to those clubs for their warm hospitality.

The barbecued chicken at our Tailgate Dance was yummy and Daryl Clendenin & Connie kept us hopping to work off the calories.

Thanks to all the generous folks who donated abundant supplies to local schools at our Back to School Dance.

Buckeroo - Link
Fall is continuing to be busy here at the buckaroo Barn. Lessons are going well and we have plans underway for some student level dances coming up in the next month. Our first dance this month was a tribute to Minnie Pearl. We had quite the collection of hats that evening in the barn! Everyone had a great time…even if we had to explain who Minnie Pearl was to our younger members!

Our second dance this month was our costume party dance. We had a everything from monsters to princesses show up to dance the night away. We also had a bunch of Buckeroos who were able to help the Buccaneers and the Sets in Order celebrate their anniversaries….50th for the Buccaneers and 70th for the Sets in Order!

We are gearing up for the holidays and getting ready for our largest fund raiser of the year! If you are in the area, or plan a trip this way, let us know and we can set aside a beautiful wreath to adorn your home this holiday season. Stay tuned for dates and prices.

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
