President's Corner
Holiday time is just around the corner. Food, family, and traditions are all coming to take some of our time. I am hoping that you will take time to put dancing in your schedule also. It will take away the stress of deadlines and give you some time away from the wrapping paper, meal planning, and school vacations that are also just weeks away.
Encourage the new dancers to attend the new dancer dances, jamborees and holiday dances so they can get the experience of regular dances and meeting other new dancers that are getting the same lessons they are. They can compare notes, hear other callers/cuers other than their own instructor, and they will be able to gauge how they are doing and can go back to their instructor and comment on what they learned by attending the dance. The instructor can make any adjustments needed so their next dance experience is a better one. We want them to succeed and enjoy the overall aura of friendship set to music.
January will bring about Mid-Winter Festival and the collection of names for potential candidates for Federation office. Look in your state directory and search for the nomination committee members and get your name and nomination form submitted to one of them for inclusion on the ballot.
Does your club have a charity to which it donates either funds or goods? Has your club done anything yet during the year to benefit someone else who may need what you have to offer to them? Let me know what your club or area does. I am interested in learning what others do to share the bounty.
From the Federation to all of you,
Merry Christmas and be safe when driving to and from an event
Marilyn Schmit
President
Editor's Note
As we enter this holiday season after that long, ugly campaign, be sure to keep your family close and hug your friends tightly. We'll all get through this together.
Are your classes planning to attend Mid-Winter? I still have enormously fond memories of our first Mid-Winter way back in 1992.

Valley Squares, the oldest square dance club in the Portland metropolitan area, is in a transitional phase. We want to encourage new ideas to update this traditional activity. Paramount in our philosophy is to be a club that welcomes ALL dancers - one that reflects the diversity of the 21st Century. We aspire to create an atmosphere where new dancers can have fun and be successful, but also where experienced dancers are delighted by creative and challenging choreography.
We are in the process of making decisions about our club caller.
If you have a great singing voice, love patter with creative choreography, have expertise in calling and teaching B51 through Advanced Plus; if you are stoked by dancers of all ages, singles as well as couples, including same sex couples or partners switching left and right positions; if you are excited about calling a variety of dances, including Community or Demo dances, email our secretary, Joy Choy at bok.choy@live.com for an application.
The Valley Squares is looking to contract with a caller/instructor to teach our Beginning through Mainstream class on Tuesdays starting January 17th at the Aloha Grange. The class starts with two free lessons on Jan 17th and 24th, and will continue for 20 weeks through approximately the start of June. Please contact Joy Choy, secretary, if you have the experience and desire to teach brand new students how to square dance. Joy's email is bok.cho@live.com, and her cell number is 971-255-6809.

We had our fall dance October 29 and had several of our members (including our new members) call and cue. We missed Kirby Goode who is not well and home on oxygen. We pray he feels better soon. Lennie Ludiker hurt his back helping his sister move. Always something it seems. We were happy to have several of our members present for our Fifth Saturday Dance. Our association is growing with new callers and cuers.
CCCA is sponsoring this year's New Year's Eve dance. Roger Putzler will be the caller, and Christina Corelli will cue. The cost will be $2.50 as that was the cost of square dancing back in the 80's. So, plan to join us December 31. 8:30 - Pre-Rounds and 9:00 - Squares We dance at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. Please come and help us issue in 2017!

October 14th was our second time of enjoying Jim Hattrick as our new club caller for the 2nd Friday of each month. Mark Wheeler, also a caller from the Portland area, rode down with Jim and we enjoyed one tip he called and one tip that they called together. We are also very lucky to have Jackie Gale as our full time club cuer and, as always, her cueing was great.Towards the end of the dance Jim workshopped "Daisy Chain," a call from years past. After many attempts all the squares finally figured out which direction to go as we proceeded through the call. Great fun!
October 28th was our annual Halloween costume dance with Scott Zinser calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Always fun to see so many club members, as well as guests in great costumes. Everyone that came through the door was handed a ballot to vote on their favorite costume choices in each category and prizes were awarded at break-time. Scott and Jackie called and cued a great dance and a fun time was had by all.
Single Trees (as part of the inter-club lesson committee) is hosting the first Wednesday B51 dance from 7 pm to 9 pm on Nov. 16th at the ESDC - hope you get this in time to come and support our new dancers!.
December 9th is our Christmas dinner (at 6:30 pm) and dance (starting at 7:30 pm). Single Trees will supply the meat (leaning toward ham) and rolls. Anyone who is planning on attending please bring potluck food no later than 6:15 p.m. so we can eat on time in order to dance on time. It would be much appreciated. Jim Hattrick will be doing the calling for this dance. We hope to see many of our friends from other clubs attend the dance.
Thanks to Vonda Clayton, historian, for Oct. information

The club seems to be clogging right along, no pun intended. Ballots are presently being counted for election of officers to either continue or take over as of January 1, 2017. We are also wrapping up our beginner class that started in September. We have 15 students in this class and they are doing a very fine job. They will be graduating just before Christmas, and hopefully, many of them will continue into the next phase of the beginner class after the first of the year.
We will be starting a second beginner class the first part of February 2017. This will be our second year of having lessons in February. Last year we had a number of people take part in this and it proved to be quite successful. Classes will be held as usual through the holiday season and we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy, healthy holiday season and blessings in the new year. We want to thank all of the dancers who attended the Mid-Willamette Area first New Dancers Dance which we had the honor of hosting right after Thanksgiving.
Our second dance in December will be our Christmas dance and, as usual, we will hold our silent auction (the proceeds going to support our charity). In addition to said proceeds, our club members will take this opportunity to collect cans of decaffeinated coffee to supply to the Windsor House. A new twist for our Christmas Dance this year will be holding our Candy Cane (pole) Dance for which the participants will receive a special dangle. Happy Dancing! Linda Neuschwander

We had a great "Black Light" dance in October with four squares. It is always fun to see how the white shows up in the light. Charlotte Jeskey called and Jackie Gale cued. Our next dance will be a Sports Night Dance where dancers may wear apparel that represents their favorite team.
This month is a busy month for our club to go visiting. In November we will be helping the Sweet Home Squarenaders celebrate at their Turkey Dinner Dance with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing. It is always a super dance with dinner being served prior to the dance.
On November 19th our club is going dark so that we can dance with the Braids and Braves to Dan Nordbye.
Then we have our Toy Dance on the first Saturday in December. We are also getting ready for our 68thBirthday celebration. See you in a square! Marilyn York

Hello everyone, and Happy Holidays as the days roll by to Christmas and New Year’s.
We have been busy with Fox Trot and Tango workshops, getting into the more difficult, higher level, phase 4 moves. We had a Halloween party of just dancing and no workshops. It gave us an idea how we are doing and what moves we still need work on.
We are dark on Thanksgiving and on December 22nd and 29th to allow for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and all the preparations that need to be done. We will rest and deal with the details and figure out what we are doing for another rhythm after the first of the year.
We are dancing on New Year’s Eve with our club cuer, Cheryl Manley and additional cuers, Ken Pratt and David Vomocil, to make for a joyous evening of dancing and friendship. Come and join us, dress up, and enjoy an evening of dancing Phase 3-4 and some Phase 5. A little bit of everything for all. Marilyn Schmit

We had a good dance in October. even with all of the rain. A few River City Dancers braved the weather for a visitation and they retrieved their banners. We had a visitation to them the next evening and stole one back again.
We ended up with only one youth student this year and she decided she really wanted to wait another year to take lessons, so we ended up cancelling lessons for this year. But we are already working on getting the word out for lessons next year. Petrina Buchheit

In November we launched our students off to jamborees and new dancer dances. It is so much fun to see them gain skills every week while having a blast learning to square up with our intrepid angels. Our new dancers' dance is December 23, and we hope to welcome newbies from many clubs not only in the council, but also from all clubs in the greater Portland/Salem area.
Late in November, in fact the day after Thanksgiving, we host our annual Gospel Dance, which is always a hit. Then the following evening, we are supporting our caller, Randy Dibble, and his wife Sharon, in hosting a benefit dance for family members in the Philippines who are struggling to recover from two typhoons that wiped out everything they had. The dance will be Saturday, November 26 at 7:30 at the Fairfield Grange on River Road south of St. Paul. It is mainstream with every third tip plus, with rounds between tips. Cash donations gratefully accepted at the door.
And last, but not least, you're invited to our annual New Year's Eve celebration at Maplewood Grange in Aurora. Beginning at 8:00 pm, we will dance plus with every third tip A2.
Our flyers have all the details about these upcoming events. We hope you will join us.

Willamette Squares celebrated its birthday dance. Thank you to those who attended and helped us celebrate. It was a fun dance with a party mood and delicious birthday cake and ice cream. The end of November will be our annual Thanksgiving feast and dance. You won't want to miss an opportunity to acknowledge the many blessings we enjoy as we dance the night away.
Our club continues with round and square dance lessons. We are still in need of angels, so if you are available and willing, please join us on Sundays to lend a hand (and foot.)
We will be going dark on the fourth Saturday of December which is the 24th. On January 8, 2017 at 1:30 will be our New Dancer dance at the Salem Square Dance Center. Then the on January 28, Willamette Squares will again be dark because of Mid-Winter. We hope to see you all at our Thanksgiving and new dancer dances. Jodee Howard
The most surprising news of last month is that the Clark County Square Dance Center bumped our Tri-Council square dance. It is evident that the CCSDC is not a dependable venue, and we need to start looking at other places to hold our larger dances. “ places where our patronage is welcomed and revered. Even in best case scenario, we will only have the CCSDC for a few more months. A good person to contact would be Egan at: anthony.egan1@gmail.com
Meanwhile, our annual Christmas dinner will be held Dec 19 (in lieu of our usual meeting), 6:15, at the Spaghetti Factory on Sunnyside Road in Clackamas. This will probably be the last year it will be there, as Tami Helms is exploring new venues. All are welcome to attend.

Oak Grove Community Club, Oak Grove
Delegate: Jim Schira
Visitation: Oct 12 from Happy Hoppers. Two other clubs tried for a visitation, but failed to come up with a one square minimum. We feel honored that so many people come to visit us.
Winter heating bills can often cost a person a lot of money. Square dancing is one of the most cost effective forms of exercise around. But if you still find yourself broke, you should come to the B&B’s anyway. Just ask our parking valet Parker Parkit for a loan. He’s a pessimist and doesn’t expect to be repaid.

Happy holidays from the Buzzin' Bees! We hope this finds you having a happy and healthy December.
Yes, it is cold, dark and wet but the Bees plan to celebrate "Christmas in Hawaii " and we invite you to join us on December 17th. KC Curtis will be joined by Bill Lundin to call and Debbie Combs will cue. Debbie is getting ready to retire and travel with her husband so we will be losing her at the end of January. We dance at the Hazel Dell Grange with pre-rounds @ 7:30 and squares @8.
Lessons are going well. We have a lively group of students and have started to invite them to dances where we do a class level tip and then a mainstream tip.
By the time you read this we will have had our "Giving Thanks" dance where we take in a collection of personal care items and deliver them to several Assisted living facilities that serve a high number of low income seniors.I want to thank all who donate. It makes such a huge impact on their lives.

Silver City Squares in Silverton hosted their Thanksgiving Fest. dinner and dance on November 11th - the Chaps and Petticoats was there and took home, unexpectedly, the Silverton banner...yeah!
A few of us Chaps attended the Seaside Sashay on October 22nd. It was entertaining and full of humor with Ray Brendzy and Richard Lane as Callers and Debbie Taylor too. Thank you to the Hayshakers and Sunset Promenaders for a well enjoyed event.
We welcome all to join the Chaps & Petticoats on December 2nd with Scott Zinser and Sandra Pinion as Caller/Cuer. On December 16th George Hermann and Ken Pratt will end our 2016 year of dances and put us in the Christmas spirit...join us.
How unbelievable that this year is almost over! Have a joy-filled Christmas and a blessed New 2016 Year!

We were recently blessed by having our club featured in the Sandy Post in early November. This was unsolicited free advertising with pictures and a nice article. Just for the record though, Marc and Bev only have two children, not five. This article fits with our theme this year of trying to reach out to the community and have more awareness that we are there and what we do. Any time there is mention of square dancing in a newspaper, we all potentially benefit by this exposure.
We will be having our Club Christmas Party on December 10th with our annual gift exchange. This is always fun and a chance to get to know each other better. The next day on the 11th, we will host a new student level Jamboree at 1:30 to 4:00 PM. We have some great students in our mainstream class! December 31st is a 5th Saturday and New Year’s Eve, but due to poor attendance last year, and the numerous dances competing on this date, we have decided to go dark. So our third Saturday dance on Dec. 17th will be your last chance to dance at the Boring Barn in 2016, unless you want to come out and be an angel at our lessons on Thursday nights 7:30 to 9:30 PM.
Just a reminder that in January 2017, we will start dancing on 1st and 4th and 5th Saturdays. Unfortunately, the first time we are scheduled to dance on a 4th Saturday, it conflicts with Mid-Winter Festival, which is usually well attended by Cut-Ups, so we will be dark. On the third Saturdays, we will plan to do some visitations to club we have previously not been able to dance with, due to having the same schedule. Maybe we will show up at your club soon!
Happy Holidays!

The Happy Hoppers' New Year's Eve dance this year is themed as "A Winter Wonderland". It will take place at the Clark County Square Dance Center. There will be a light buffet supper starting at 7:30, along with a hot cocoa bar. At 8:30, the Front Porch Trio (Jim Hattrick, Craig Abercrombie, and Adam Christman) will be in charge for the rest of 2016, wearing matching parkas, in honor of the occasion. Advance tickets can be had for $15.00. To get yours, please contact Ron or Emily Chase at 360-892-1105. Admission will cost $20.00 at the door. Our New Year's Eve dances are always festive events, so we hope to see you there.
But wait... there's more... In December, we will also keep to our regular schedule of having dances on the first and third Saturdays, with our club caller, Jim Hattrick, presiding. December 3rd will be a regular dance. Our Christmas Dance, on the 17th, will feature all singing calls.
At our dances November 19th and December 3rd, we will be accepting donations of unwrapped presents for the Children's Center in Vancouver, like we did last year. The mission of the Children's Center is to provide quality mental health services to children and families of Clark County. These are good people performing an excellent service. It's an honor for us to be able to help them out and to spread a little seasonal joy.
On October 30th, at the Tri-Council "5th Saturday" dance, the Evergreen Council presented the Bob Kendall Award to a couple of Happy Hoppers: Walt and Pauline Eby. The Kendall Award is given annually to an outstanding couple who have a history of selflessly promoting the fun and fellowship of the square dance community. That just about describes the tireless efforts of Walt and Pauline. Congratulations to them for receiving this honor!
On October 11th, the Happy Hoppers hosted a fund raising evening at the Burgerville restaurant in Orchards, from 5:00 to 8:00. We delivered trays of food to customers waiting at their tables and cleaned the tables after people left. That kept us jumping for three hours and we all had a good time. Our 10% take-home-pay for the club was just under $200.00. Kudos to Danny and Carol Williamson for arranging and organizing this event!
On December 10th, we will have a visitation with River City Dancers, in Milwaukie. Les Seeley will be calling and Tammy Helms will be cueing. Rounds start at 7:30 and squares are from 8:00 to 10:00.
We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format. Square dance lessons for new beginners will start on Monday, January 2nd at the Clark County Square Dance Center.

On Saturday, November 5th, the Oaky Doaks hosted a trophy dance. There were members from the River City Dancers, Floor Dusters, Columbia River Dancers, Tualatin Timber Squares, and B & B’s (sorry if I missed anyone) all with the vision of taking home the grand prize. Everyone had a good time doing the two couple squares and the squarounds (a dance where both square dancing and round dancing is done to the same song) that Mike and Helen called and cued us to. When the final tally was taken the Tualatin Timber Squares were the winners with 60 percent of their members being present at the dance. Congrats to the Tualatin Timber Squares. Next trophy dance is on them.
December will find the Oaky Doaks getting into the festive holiday spirit starting with our all singing call Christmas Gospel Dance on Saturday, December 3rd. Mike Halley will be calling and Helen Halley will be cuing to gospel songs of the holiday season. There will also be a silent auction of gifts and goodies for everyone to look over and bid on as well.
On Saturday, December 10th, the Oaky Doaks members will be gathering together for a potluck holiday dinner. There will be good food, fun games and a gift exchange with lots of funny results. And maybe even the traditional ugly sweater / skirt contest as well.
Saturday, December 17th, will be the Holly Jolly Holiday Dance where Mike Halley will be calling and Helen Halley cuing to some of the favorite holiday carols / songs. It is rumored that a certain caller from the North Pole just might drop in to join everyone on the dance floor. Maybe if you have been a good boy or girl he might even allow members and guests a photo opportunity to remember the night with. Ho, Ho, Ho!
Don’t forget our new hours that started in September. Pre-rounds at 7:00, Mainstream with a plus tip right before break at 7:30, Break at 9:00 and dance
ending at 10:00.
Have a Happy and Safe Holiday season. We’ll see you on the dance floor!

What a fun Halloween dance we had! Many clever costumes and great calling by Jim Hattrick. Of course the food was fantastic. More fun holiday dances are being planned: Thank giving with turkey and all the trimmings, Christmas and even New Years dance. Check our flyers for dates, callers and cuers. Don't forget, we have great parking in our parking lot.
The Charlie's are holding steady and having lots of fun dancing. Several dancers enjoyed the weekend up at Royal Romp and some went the next weekend to RIVCO, in Indio, CA. A few of us will be heading over to the coast Nov 18-20th for the Fall Fling Round Dance Weekend. So much fun to be had!!!
Our next dance is November 19th, and we are hoping for lots of fun and a great turnout. We have a guest caller, Jim Steele, coming over from Prineville. This dance will have all levels - Mainstream thru Advanced. There will not be any round dancing. Hope we see lots of friends!! Check out the flyer!
December 3rd, we are celebrating our 49th birthday!! We have guest caller Richard Lane coming over to join us, and Bob Dingman will be doing rounds. Richard is also going to do a special Plus workshop prior to the dance - from 2-4(ish). Come early and enjoy the challenge. Advanced will start at 600, and pre-rounds at 730. See the flyer for more info. Come join us - the Charlie's always throw a great party!!
Our 3rd Saturday dance, on the 17th, will feature our regular caller Ray Holmes, with Bob Dingman on the rounds. This is our Plus/A1 dance.
Our September class celebrated their 1st plateau and had lots of fun. The class is always full of smiles, and we are doing our best to encourage the fun!!
We are gearing up for new classes starting in January. As always, the first 3 classes are free. 1st class is January 12, 2017. We are also continuing with our A1 class - we have a nice core group learning about the fun of dancing advanced. We even have a couple coming down each week from Roseburg. They have been a fun addition to our group!
Since this will be published before the holidays - we want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!!
We hope to see you in a square soon!!!

I hate to tell our young dancers this, but as you get older, like in your 60's or 70's, the time seems to speed up. It seems like just yesterday I was telling everyone about the Thanksgiving Burn-Off Dance we will be having the day after Thanksgiving with Dan Nordbye calling and Julie Stiers cuing. By the time everyone reads this, it will almost be here. Then comes December, which is what this edition is all about. We will be having our Christmas Dance on December 10th with caller Mike Stout and cuing by Julie Stout. It should be a wonderful way to wrap up the year.
Our second dance in December was to be on the 24th, but Santa comes that night and so we will be dark. We just cannot out do the big guy.
On behalf of all of the Columbia River Dancers, I want to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and the Best New Year ever. Thanks to you all, you have made this year one to remember! See you in a square in 2017.

IMPORTANT: ‘What about Christmas?” you ask. Good question. We will NOT dance on the day after, Monday the 26th. We want you to relax and enjoy friends and family.
We love “The CREW”. Eighteen members traveled to Woodburn to enjoy their calling. They do a great job of mixing old favorites with new routines to test our adaptability and sprinkle in a few jokes to keep us laughing. A good time was had by all. Do not miss THE CREW next time they put on a show.
On October 13th we entertained at the Laurel Parc Western Day for the enjoyment of the residents. Our dancers were invited to join them for some “old west” grub on “tin” plates with “chicken feed” (chex mix) and sarsaparilla (root beer). Needless to say all had a good time and were invited back for next year. Thanks to all who attended and our caller, Darrell Kalmbach.
Sixteen of our members enjoyed the callers and activities at the Seaside Sashay. Richard Lane and Ray Brendzy called. Ray’s two teenage children even joined in the calling. Eleven squares danced at the Turn Around and three squares at the Outlet Stores mall. Over two hundred dancers had an enjoyable weekend. This item may have people joining our club; two of our members, Judy and Ken, won the split the pot ($149) and a breakfast coupon ($25). Yes, they will attend again next year.
Our Halloween dance showed how creative members can be. Prizes were won by a Clown, Hiawatha, and a Hula dancer. At the end they all went out for an early dinner at the Golden Crown.
Genevieve Churchill is well known in the square dance world as a dedicated supporter for over 70 years. She is a longtime member of our club and is now our eldest member at 105. See, square dancing keeps you young.
We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.
Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

Our Seaside Sashay was October 21st and 22nd. I want to thank everyone who came and enjoyed the weekend. The weather was perfect so we were able to dance 2 hours at the Turnaround and 1 hour at the Factory Outlet plus the regular dancing at the Convention Center. Some of the people who attended have come every year that we have been putting it on. Thanks to the Sunset Promenaders, Gary and Joyce Clark, the Horses, the Hayshakers, Dale and Kathy Worthington, Cynthia Weber and Sylvia Davis. Again thanks. Also, there is a picture of the dancers at the Convention Center, the Turnaround, and in the sand.
Hoedowners wisely had their only dance of the month a themed Octoberfest Dance. It was held on the 8th, fall leaves and sauerkraut certainly signal the fall season. The rest of the month we enjoyed dancing at sponsored dances. On the 22nd we went dark at the Aloha Grange to attend the Seaside Sashay. Has it been three years in a row where the weather cooperated so there could be dancing at the turnaround? That is truly a unique experience and to think it’s the end of October. It’s just a great weekend of fun on and off the dance floor and that’s why 24 Hoedowners attended. We dined together Saturday night and had a post party following Saturday night’s dance. Hoedowners never want to miss an opportunity to spend time together.
On the 29th we joined other dancers at the 5th Saturday Tri-Council dance. Thank heavens, we just can’t waste a Saturday night!
On December 10th we will be having our annual Toyland Dance where we bring a donation of an unwrapped toy or other gift for a child. These are placed under the tree in the Grange and then donated to local families in need.
Our classes are moving right along. What a great group; folks who’ve never danced in a square to people returning after years away. I don’t think we’ve ever had new dancer’s pick up the calls so quickly and we’re anxious to get them to regular dances. Our New Dancers Jamboree will be on December 11th, 1:30PM at the Aloha Grange.
Not wanting to compete with old Saint Nicholas, the Hoedowners will be dark on December 24th. Please enjoy the holiday with your children, grand children, and loved ones.
At our Halloween dance we had an unexpected lighting effect. That was the day when rain had been so heavy. A downstairs pipe had come unattached, and the resulting problem had to be taken care of, fortunately, before the dance started.
It was upstairs that the surprise effect showed. Only one set of lights came on for the dance. Luckily, the other rooms had their regular lights functioning properly. The dancers seemed quite undaunted by dim lights and continued to dance with enthusiasm. It was a little tougher on Randy and Jeanine trying to provide the music under difficult circumstances.
We look forward to our Canned Food Dance December 17 when the stage will be decorated with lots of canned food donations for the food bank to distribute to the hungry.

The smells of the crisp air, decaying leaves, apple cider, and the presence of pumpkins everywhere lets us know that autumn has arrived here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
R Square D club celebrated the season with a dance on October 14th with no reason to get all gussied up; it was a dance where all wore their best Pajamas. Dancers had the dream team calling, Craig and his buddy Egan. Visiting clubs were, Cougar Squares, Ruff and Ruffles, and Floor Dusters (Oregon). We finished up the evening with heavenly finger foods and then all slipped off to home to climb into bed.
On the 22nd, Box Car Boogie was the theme and we served chili and toppings at the break. We had lots of visitors from Cougar Squares and also visitors from Ruff & Ruffles, Happy Hoppers, Buzzin’ Bees and B&B’s. The train kept on chugging along with four squares on the floor for much of the night.
Thank you to Linda and Lonnie Sykes for hosting our monthly meeting on the 17th at the Kelso Senior Center. Another very large celebration happened on October 9th, Charlotte Houghtlen, a refined club member celebrated her 90th birthday. Family, dancing friends and good community friends all came to honor her. Congratulations Charlotte.
We welcome the month of December with a B-51/Toy Dance on December 9th; it will be geared for our students and will be called at their level. The toys brought will be donated to a local charity.
R Square D’ers were excited to welcome 5 new people to the first night of lessons. Plus starts at 6:30-7:30; Basic 7:30-9:00; Mainstream 9-9:30. Dark on December 24th. Please join us as we continue to welcome old and new dancers alike.

The Annual Seaside Sashay was at the Seaside Convention Center Friday October 21st and Saturday the 22nd this year with Ray Brendzy and Richard Lane as the callers and cuer Debbie Taylor. We had 200-dancers attend; Friday the weather was nice but Saturday the weather was just beautiful. Ray, Richard, and Debbie did a great job of calling and cueing, it was a great festival, with of a couple of big split the pots, Friday night $89, and Saturday $149! Some of the events included dancing at the Turnaround on Saturday and we had ten squares dancing there, also six squares at the Outlet Mall during the day. And of course there was the mud wrestling event, and we danced in the hall a lot too. There were dancers from Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and other places, too.
October 1st the Sunset Promenaders had our 32nd Anniversary Dance. 11 squares danced mainstream and Plus with calling by Dan Preedy from Spokane. Our own Ken Pratt did his usual excellent cueing. The evening started out at 6:30 with a full dinner meal featuring pulled pork, and the famous “Donna’s rolls”. Then the pre-rounds started at 7:30 and mainstream dance at 8:00 until 10:00 with dessert break after. We appreciate all the visitors from many different clubs in the area. The visitors made it a special dance with a full floor and a chance to visit with all our old and new friends. Thank you.
In December our dance theme is all about Christmas of course.
• Our December dances are on Thursdays, December 1st and 15th, all Plus, Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt calling and cueing for the Promenaders Plus, 7:00 to 9:30PM.
• On Saturdays December 3rd and 17th are our Sunset Promenaders dances with Mike Stout and Ken Pratt. These dances start at 7:00 with plus for an hour and then mainstream from 8:00 until 10:00.

The Toe Draggers square dance class is off to a great start. Our students are really moving through the material and are mastering the moves. They will be ready for their jamboree on November 20th, and hope other clubs will be able to join us. Club angels are encouraging the students to attend other jamborees and are planning on going with them. Our resale clothing will start next week and continue into December. Guests are welcome to purchase items, too.
The Toe Draggers will be celebrating the Christmas season during both December dances. On Friday, December 2nd, we will hold our “Deck the Halls” dance. The festivities start at 7:30 pm with round dancing with Bev followed by our mainstream dance with rounds at 8:00 pm. Our students are encouraged to attend the first hour of the dance where tips will be called to their level. A plus tip will be also called during the evening. On Friday, December 16th, we will host a special holiday dance, “We Wreath You a Merry Christmas”. The dancing starts at 7:30 pm with pre-plus with KC followed by our mainstream dance with rounds. The Toes will be collecting new, unwrapped toys during both of their December dances. The toys will be donated to area youth who are in need.
Bev Flint will be starting her Round Dance lessons on January 8th at the Kinton Grange at 2:00 pm. Lessons will start with Two-Step, followed by Waltz in a few weeks.
The Tri Squares are enjoying fun and fellowship during the month of December. During the month we have our Annual Christmas Dinner. We look forward to seeing all our members at this event. During the month of November, we had a new dancer’s jamboree. The dance was held on Sunday, November 13th from 3:30 to 5:30. A big thank you to everyone who attended.
Starting in January, we will be starting the second set of our square dance lessons. These lessons are moves 51 to mainstream. We look forward to seeing you.

Please join us for our "Christmas is Coming Dance" December 3rd and our "Santa Dance" December 17th at Aloha Grange.
We had a quiet October. Many of us celebrated the Sunset Promenaders Anniversary, for which Valley Squares had gone dark. We also had fun dancing with the Tualatin Timbers Squares at our monthly visitation.
Dancing to Scott Bennett, a National caller from Oklahoma was the highlight of our month. He has a great voice and his choreography is fun and innovative. We felt very fortunate to have him as guest caller at our October 15th dance.
Our Mastering Mainstream lessons are transitioning to Plus this month. Join us on Tuesday nights.

Dark
The Wave Steppers’ square dance classes are “dark” the month of December. Like we did last year, we’re taking a hiatus between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. The free Wednesday night classes at the Tillamook Elks lodge, taught by club caller Joe Wrabek, will resume January 4th.
The Club has a tentative lineup for the 2017 Dance Season. Club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel will be doing the club dances in March (3/11), May (5/13), August (8/12), and October (10/14). In April, we’ll have Jim Hattrick calling and cueing; in July, it will be Harvey Hunsucker calling and Cueing; and in September, our Anniversary Dance will feature “Caller Elvis” (Mark Wheeler) and cuer Connie Clark. (The caller and cuer for the Club’s June 10th dance aren’t confirmed yet as this is written.)
The Wave Steppers’ dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth St. (at Acacia). About two-thirds of the building’s second floor is a dance floor, and the Club has reportedly square danced there since the building was built in 1948.
The UAC will be hosting our annual January New Dancer Dance January 20th in the
afternoon from 2:30 “ 5:00 pm. We are excited to host the dance because it is a “Last Chance Dance” to come out and dance before heading to Albany for the Mid-Winter Festival. If you are a new dancer or have new dancers in your club that are feeling a little “iffy” about dancing at Mid-Winter this is the perfect opportunity to get in some floor time. All of the calls will be at the new dancer level. If you are an old hat at dancing, it will be a fun afternoon of dancing and a great way to get in one last dance before heading for Albany. See our flyer for more info.
See you at Mid-Winter!
December 5 (1st Mon) Meeting
4:30 PM
Garden Valley Mini Mart, Roseburg
Delegate: Frank Schuchard
Here at the Barn, fall has set in! The leaves are falling and it is beginning to look like Thanksgiving. This past month the students in lessons have learned so much that they are ready for new dancer dances and jamborees!
Our dances this month were lots of fun. During our first dance this month, we celebrated our Veterans with a Red, White, and Blue theme. Everyone was decked out in their best outfits as we danced the night away. Our second dance was our Thanksgiving Feast. The barn provided the turkey and we all brought side dishes to share. The first hour of the evening dance was devoted to our students with beginning level dances.
We also joined up together to dance/walk in the Roseburg Veteran’s Day Parade. We dressed up in red, white, and blue and celebrated those who have served our country. A great time was had by all.
We have started our largest fundraiser of the year, so stay tuned for details. The Buckeroos have the best holiday wreaths that you can find in Oregon. If you are interested in purchasing one to decorate your home this holiday season, please contact us.
Happy dancing,
Robin P. Faltersack
