A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs
Printed 20 February 2017
President's Corner
What to write? Hmm. February means Valentine’s Day, President holidays, recovering from Mid-Winter and getting steam built up for Summer Festival, second sessions of some classes and planning summer vacations with dancing involved.
As I write this, I am huddled under a blanket keeping warm while it is cold outside. Thinking ahead to Mid-Winter activities for the various events I need to attend, meetings to be prepared for, and all the hugs I plan to collect from people I have not seen in a while.
How successful were your new dancers at Mid-Winter? Did they get enough dancing in, did they bring back any comments to your club that would be of use to others. Make sure you find out if they had a good time and were treated nicely by other dancers.
As your club holds meetings and gets ready to elect officers, don’t forget to fill out the form on the Federation website. It is from that form that the state directory is done, officers are known to contact for questions and answers from other dancers. It is important that your information is correct and up to date.
If your club has a website, make sure it is up to date also. Lots of dancers look for information and if the information is not correct, you might lose a visit from dancers who are looking for a place to dance when traveling.
See you somewhere soon.
Marilyn Schmit President
Editor's Note
If your club changes its regular dance days, please take a moment to notify me. Let me explain why.
It's a bit tricky to come up with a way to allow you to edit and tweak every one of your dances, while still handling the normal dances for those clubs who don't regular make updates. In order to do that, I create entries for your regular dances 4 or 5 months ahead. If you change your regular dance day, those "made in advance" dance entries are still there with the old dates. If you are proficient with the computer, you can certainly go in and remove those entries and add your new ones, but it's generally easier just to contact me and have me fix them up directly.
Click here to find out how to get your
information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers,
advertisements, and caller/cuer information.
We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of

Harold T. Kleve age 82, passed away on January 15, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on February 4, 2017 at Donelson Fir Lawn Funeral Chapel . Reception to follow at the Odd Fellows Hall, 267 East Main St, Hillsboro. A full obituary can be found here.
Harold was born August 7, 1934 on his grandmother's farm in Molalla, OR, as number 9 of ten kids. He was raised in Canby, OR, graduating in the class of 1952. He served as class president and salutatorian, was in the band, and was on the football, basketball and track teams.
Harold served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957. He was based at several bases statewide and in the Marshall Islands, where he participated in the testing of the hydrogen bomb. Harold joined the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Hillsboro, OR. In 1957 and retired as a Captain in 1985. He attended Portland Community College and received his degree in Criminal Justice.
Harold was the first Washington County law officer to attend the F.B.I. National Academy (82ndSession) in Quantico, VA, and graduated in 1968. Returning to Washington County Sheriff's Office he applied this training to train his Officers. Harold was also instrumental in the formation of Washington County's Explorer Scout Post #877, one of the oldest posts in the nation.
After retiring Harold wasn't ready for the rocking chair quite yet. So he became a Square Dance Caller and instructor, which he thoroughly enjoyed for 25 years. His baritone voice was enjoyed by many at National Conventions in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Oregon. His yodeling was a surprise even to his family!
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Kidney Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Happy New Year, and may 2017 bring you many blessings!
CCCA sponsored the New Year's Eve dance. Roger Putzler called, and Christina Corelli cued. There were about 6 plus squares and tons of pies and other goodies. We celebrated four times. Once for New York City, once for Chicago (Roger was born and raised in Chicago.), once for Ontario, Oregon and then good o' Eugene/Springfield. We used a lot of poppers and had to sweep up after each celebration! We thank the dancers for helping clean up afterwards as well. It was a FUN dance! We danced one tip in 2017.
Our next dance isn't until April 29. We dance the Fifth Saturdays from 7:30 - 10:00 with our meeting at 6:30.
One of our members, Kirby Goode (caller), remains on in home hospice care and is hanging in there. Kirby and his wife, Christina Corelli, appreciate the emails, cards, phone calls, visits and people willing to stay with him while Christina runs errands and does a few things for herself. Thank you!
Happy New Year from Danebo Circle 8. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our Christmas dance because of the weather. Several of our members did attend the New Year’s Eve Dance sponsored by the Cascade Callers and Cuers Association. We're looking forward to our dances in January and February.

The snow and freezing weather, plus many people being under the weather has had an impact on the size of our lessons lately, and forced us to cancel our January dance as well.
However, at our upcoming February 4th dance, we will be celebrating our 19th birthday. Back on February 14, 1998 we started our first set of lessons and eventually grew into a club. Doesn’t seem like that long ago, but as the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. We hope you can make it out to help us celebrate.

On December 20, we had 27 members and students attend our wonderful Christmas Party at the home of our President Jennie Ramer, including a White Elephant gift exchange. A singing catfish and a set of rollerblades were among the gifts. After the gift exchange, Linton Allen played his ukulele to accompany Christmas carols sung by the group. We're looking forward to a New Year and, of course, Mid-Winter Festival. See you in a square. Carmen Rost

At our last dance in December, we graduated 13 beginning dancers. We are very excited that the majority of them decided to join the club and have continued attending in the New Year. The beginner and intermediate classes continue to practice the demo songs in preparation for our upcoming season as well as learning new dances each week.
We will be starting another class of beginners the second Tuesday in February and hoping to have as many if not more than we had for September's class.
We had our annual meeting on January 21 to discuss where the club is headed for 2017, discussing our financial position, the demo season and outfit, beginner classes etc. Several members will be attending the clogging portion of mid winter. Georganne Pfnister

We hope all of our fellow dancers had a wonderful holiday season. Our club started our holiday activities by collecting cans of decaffeinated coffee for the Windsor House. Windsor House is a rehabilitation facility for brain injured adults. We managed to collect 51 cans. We do this collection twice a year and the residents really appreciate this because otherwise they would only receive one cup of coffee a day. At our second dance, we held a silent auction, which had some very lively bidding. The proceeds also went to the Windsor House.
We invited our new dancer’s class to join us at our second dance and those dancers who did that seemed to really enjoy themselves. Our class members, as well as our club members, are looking forward to the Mid-Winter Festival.
We hope to see all or our dancing friends at the Mid-Winter Festival. Happy Dancing, Linda Neuschwander

We are now into the New Year and the club brought the New Year into reality with a successful New Year’s Eve dance. Almost 20 couples were in attendance, which included the three cuers and spouses. Lots of food graced two tables in the hall. Four bottles of sparkling cider were served at midnight and the higher level of dancing went on while the rest of us cleaned up and got ready for the wet trip home. We appreciate the dancers who attended and enjoyed the friendship of those who were there. We have reserved the hall for another New Year’s Eve dance at the end of 2017. Hope you will join us.
January will be filled with workshops, working on our Showcase of Ideas demo for Mid-Winter, and just filling time with floor time. Nothing has been set in stone yet for what we are doing in February. Might just be more of the same.
We dance on Thursdays at the SSDC and you are more than welcome to join us. Marilyn Schmit

I hope everyone had some good holidays and that the weather didn't cause too much difficulty for anyone. Thank you to everyone who joined us at our January "Black Cat" dance on the 13th. Those who were there enjoyed dancing to Leonard and Frances. We did have a low turnout of our own club members as two of our couples were on a vacation trip to sunny Florida.
We are gearing up for practice for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. We are working a bit harder this year as we would really like to be defending champs when it comes to Oregon in 2018. We also have our raffle tickets available - catch one of us kids at a dance to get yours. Please save the date of March 24 for our fundraising dance and watch for more info to come. Petrina Buchheit

Thank you to all of the dancers who kicked off the New Year with us by dancing plus and advanced until the clock struck 12. We had a blast and hope you did too.
On New Year’s Eve eve, we captured a banner from the Salem Swingin’ Stars. They are hereby challenged to reclaim it!
Lessons, which normally start the second Tuesday of February, will be delayed one week because of the Valentine’s Day holiday. Mainstream lessons will start at 6:30 and Advanced at 8:00. A collateral benefit of Randy’s lessons is that he teaches dance-by-definition so you can dance any part and get more floor time. Lessons are held at the Newberg Trailer Park Community Center on Illinois Street.

Willamette Squares had a quiet month in December what with our regularly scheduled 4th Saturday of the month being Christmas Eve. However, our new dancer dance was on January 8, 2017 at 1:30 at the Salem Square Dance Center!
The fourth Saturday of January, January 28, Willamette Squares will be dark because of Mid-Winter. We hope to see you all at our new dancer dance in the New Year and back with us on the 4th Saturday in February. Best wishes from Willamette Squares for the start of a new year offering plenty of opportunities for dancing! Jodee Howard

We’re sorry to announce the death (January 4) of long time member and former club president, Mel McLain. Mel was also the PAC President in the 1980’s.
But on a lighter note, many are planning to come to the Bon Voyage Les Dance. This will be the last dance Les Seeley is scheduled to call for us. But if he dare shows up in town, our caller recruiter will undoubtedly hire him for another dance.
And the next week will be our Valentine’s Dance. Bring your favorite date, or come to our club and find one. Everyone will be kissing sweet. Our Director of Oral Hygene, Marc McGargle, will be checking everyone at the door.
We’ll see you all at Mid-Winter

Brrr... Happy New year from the Bees. I am writing this in January and enjoying a forced stay-at-home day thanks to snow and freezing rain. We even had to cancel our dance last night for the safety of our members. I am hoping things clear up for our next dance because it's one of our favorites. It is our pajama dance. It is also our beginners Jamboree. The dance is on 1/21 / 17 at the Hazel Dell Grange. Pre-rounds start at 7:30 and squares start at 8. It is also our cuer's final dance. Debbie Combs is retiring at the end of the month. We all wish her the best. I have greatly enjoyed having her as our cuer.
In February we only have one dance planned because our Hall is booked for the third Saturday of the month. The first Saturday of the month we have our annual pie eating contest. Mark that date on your calendar. Chocolate cream pie is what is served for the contest and we have lots of other pies for the break. Since our Hall is booked for the third Saturday of the month we plan a visitation.
Our students are coming to the end of lessons and we plan a graduation dance on Sunday February 5th at 6 p.m. at the Hazel Dell Grange.
Hope to see you in a square.

The Happy Hoppers' New Year's Eve dance was a great success with about 15 squares of well-dressed celebrants. The Clark County Square Dance Center was decorated in a Winter Wonderland theme. We started out with a buffet dinner of soup, salad, and sandwiches. A hosted hot chocolate bar was available throughout the evening. The Front Porch Trio (Jim Hattrick, Craig Abercrombie, and Adam Christman) took care of calling and cueing. At midnight, we toasted in the new year. A good time was had by all!
Periodically, the FISH food bank in Vancouver requests help for sorting donated food into categories. We worked there Thursday morning, January 5th, for 3 hours. Thanks go out to Jean Tolstrup for coordinating this activity with George Kaufer of FISH. We feel that this is an important service and a great way for our club members to give back to the community.
On December 13th, we had our second fundraiser at the Burgerville in Orchards. In addition to helping serve food and cleaning tables, our club members gave a square dance demo. Check it out on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcwCnB2Ngt4 . We earned $176.00 for the club that evening!
Our square dance lessons, on Monday evenings at the Clark County Square Dance Center are continuing. We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format.
We will have our regular Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center, with our club caller/cuer, Jim Hattrick. For February, it's the 4th and the 18th. The 4th is our annual "Sweetheart Dance". Either bring your sweetheart, or maybe you can find one. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00.

The Snow Miser has prevented the Oaky Doaks from getting together for a dance several times the last two months. He prevented us from getting together for our Holly Jolly Christmas Dance on the third Saturday in December as well our King of the Road Dance on the first Saturday in January. At the time of this report we are keeping our fingers crossed that he has had enough fun stopping us from having ours and will allow us to get together for our Pajama Dance on the third Saturday in January.
Several of the Oaky Doaks will be ending the month of January by dancing at the mid-winter festival and so hopefully we will have gone beyond the Snow Miser’s interest for that weekend as well.
On February 4th we start the month off with our annual Reigning Cats and Dogs Dance. We will be collecting donations of dry dog and cat food for Ani-Meals, a partnership with Clackamas County Social Services and Senior Meals programs to provide pet food for cats and dogs of seniors in need. Already-opened bags are welcome. We count the results and determine by weight whether cats or dogs are the 'winners' based on whether more cat or dog food is donated. Vote with your food for your favorite - canine or feline.
We will also be playing BINGO for 15 prizes. Those interested in playing will be able to buy two BINGO cards for a dollar to try their luck at winning.
February 18th will be our After Valentine's Dance - Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. Starry-eyed love songs take second place at this dance. We'll hear more of the variety of ways the downside of love is celebrated in song. Join us as we celebrate “Singles Awareness Day”.

As we head into January, River City Dancers are preparing for Class Graduation. It consists of these steps: River City members visit the class on January 8th; Class visits the club at our first dance in January (January 14th); then Class graduation January 22nd. We greatly encourage our class to attend Mid-Winter Festival the weekend of January 27th.
It’s a special honor and privilege to welcome our new dancers. And a special thanks to all the “hard-badgers” who have been able to angel our class, and most special of all, a big hug of thanks to our Caller couple, Les and Paula Seeley. It’s especially nostalgic hat this will be Les’ last class.
With tears of both joy and sadness, we look forward to Seeley’s “Retirement Dance” with the Crew, along with our Cuer couple, Tami Helms and Tim Keck, coming up on Sunday, February 12th, from 2:00 to 4:30.
One special River City Angel is Jolene Cummings, who is our club photographer, and, among other things, our “Honored Couple” editor for our newsletter. For December, she picked Julius Smith and Phyllis Baldwin. Julius is a special 95 years old now, grinning all the way, and partner Phyllis is right there, with him! Square dancing is a healthy, smart sport, if you can call it a “sport”.

Tumbleweeds had to cancel 2 dances in December because of snow and ice. You can call me at 503-252-7374 or Nunally at 503- 659-2270 if there is possible cancellation because of the weather..
We will be dark for the Winter Festival weekend. Les Seeley will be calling his last dance for us in January. Les and Paula are moving to Arizona to live.
The Tumbleweeds welcome singles and couples. We make sure all the singles get to dance.
Wow!! What a crazy start to the New Year!! So many dance and class cancellations; I hope we are on the upswing of better weather, or at least weather that doesn’t cause us to miss dancing!!
The Charlie’s were dark for their Jan 7th dance in order to head up to Roseburg and dance to Mike Sikorsky. Unfortunately, Mike couldn’t make it down the I-5.
Our next dance will be this Sat Jan 21st. We have special guest caller George Hermann & guest cuer Patty Hermann!! We are excited to welcome them to Grants Pass!! This will be a Mainstream/Plus dance with rounds starting at 730pm.
We started a new Mainstream class on Jan 12th with 15 students (8 adults/7 youth). Hopefully those 15 will come back and we will have an increase in class size over the next 2 free classes.
February we have dances on the 4th & 18th with our caller Ray Holmes. Guest cuer on the 4th is Mary Nutt and on the 18th is Mark McDonald.
Next week is MidWinter Festival, and I am so very excited to dance to Hunter Keller, Mike Seastrom and Sharon (Casey) Parker!!! Hope to see many of our dance friends in Albany.
Safe travels & see you in a square!!

We had ten dancers graduate in December and three have joined the club. Classes will start up again in the fall.
Our first dance in January was in memory of Mary Phillips-Lewis who passed away last year. She loved square dancing and was taken from us much too soon.
Our third Saturday dance in February will have a Valentine theme.
I have been informed that Beachcomber’s in Port Orford will be starting round dance lessons in February with Dave Cooper teaching.
Happy Dancing!

The last TVC dance of 2016 and the first dance of 2017 were both held over a 3 ½ hour period on December 31st. Daryl and Yvonne Clendenin called and cued with help from Mike Stout, Janienne Alexander, and Julie Stout. The IOOF Hall was rockin’ as we ushered in the New Year. About ten squares signed up and paid in advance but nearly two squares were unable to make the dance due to weather conditions. The Sunset Promenaders won the TVC Banner for highest percentage of their club in attendance.
You may be reading this in late January so I will remind you of our annual TVC Presidents Meeting & Potluck. It is to recognize current and past club Presidents and will be held at the IOOF Hall, 267 East Main Street, Hillsboro, OR 97123 on January 23rd. There will be a potluck dinner starting at 6:00 and meeting at 7:00. All TVC club Presidents & dancers are invited to join us. The TVC wishes to thank all the presidents of the TVC Clubs for volunteering their time and efforts into this activity we all love. Also, at this meeting the TVC President, Dale Brabham, will announce the winner of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award” for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area.

We danced once in December, once in January and now we will be back to two dances in February. My taw and I will have missed the Mid-winter fling with all of our friends as she prepares for that new hip. We are aiming at maybe a tip at our 2nd Anniversary dance in March. In the meantime, we have Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing at our February 11th dance and club caller Jim Hattrick doing the honors on the 25th. Remember that our club tries to make sure everyone dances, so singles are welcome.
New classes start the first Tuesday of each month. With the help of our wonderful angels, we are able to move our new dancers along quicker it seems than normal. Many of our starters in November were dancing quite well at the beginning mainstream tips that Jim called at his dance on December 30th. The front Porch Trio did the singing and many new dancers had the first tips to a new caller.
I am still looking to see if there is any interest in a teen group in the Greater Portland area. We have some young people who are now in mainstream or plus who need to dance with someone closer to their age instead of dancing with grandpa (yes, one of them is my granddaughter). I know our club is not the only one out there with young people who would enjoy square dancing. If there is interest, my email is nickandjan@comcast.net.

Now is the time to sign up for Plus Lessons beginning February 13th from noon to 1:15 at the Sunset Presbyterian Church on Cornell Road. This is your opportunity to progress to Plus, brush up on your dancing skills, or spend more time just dancing. For $4 a lesson you get the best instruction from our excellent callers: Daryl Clendenin, Darrell Kalmbach, and Jim Hattrick. See www.eagerbeavers.info or call Karen at 503-649-9487 or Sally 503-645-2414.
If you come to the first lesson you can see our Valentine’s Day Celebration; The King and Queen of Hearts dance. It is fun and you will be able to join us for the first tip.
We were dark on December 26th to give everyone a chance to recover from Christmas Dinner and enjoy time with family.
The TVC New Year’s Dance had a slightly different format this year by having desserts at the break instead of a sit down dinner. The dance ended after midnight so we had a chance to kiss the New Year in.
Make sure to save the date for our Anniversary Dance, Sunday, April 23rd, IOOF Hall in Hillsboro.
We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Most holidays we dance at Aloha Grange.
Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

December was decidedly different in 2016 with temperatures plunging and many cancellations. Our big event for the month is always our Toyland Dance on the 10th. The ballroom looked festive with the Aloha Grange’s decorations; beautiful tree and fresh wreaths. We danced to old and new Christmas music and when the crowd departed they left a pile of toys under the tree. Those toys were gathered up and taken to a local business which matches toy for toy for needy kids.
The Hoedowners want to give a special thank you to Pat Wolter for spearheading the Aloha Grange’s Adopted Family program for 2016. She selected the five member family and kept the Grange membership, Hoedowners and Valley Squares up to date on what was needed. The square dance community stepped up in its usual remarkable way so that Chet and Pat Wolter and Wayne and Darlene Ditsworth used two trucks to deliver beds, mattresses, bedding, microwave, shoes, clothing, toiletries, grocery and gas gift cards, toys and other Christmas wishes. It was an amazing effort.
Old Man Winter roared into town the afternoon of the 14th and we took a hint from those early afternoon snowflakes to cancel lessons. Thank heavens because as the evening progressed, area roads turned into parking lots. There were several cancellations that week but the Hoedowners braved the roads and weather to visit Sunset Promenaders on the Saturday, the 17th.
Bart Welch and Donnie Laas had a surprise in store for dancers who attended our lesson on the 21st; an enhanced mirror ball. Quite the show fellas!! We can’t wait until everyone gets to experience the wonder.
We were dark on the 4th Saturday as that was Christmas Eve. Most Hoedowners welcomed 2017 at the TVC New Year’s Eve dance, “A Dance to Remember”.
In February we’ll have a Mad Hatter Tea Party on the 11th. Wear your “maddest” hat and celebrate Valentine’s Day and Oregon’s birthday.
February 25th is our 67th Anniversary Dance. We start the evening with a chicken dinner at 6:15, mainstream is 7-9 and plus is from 9-10. Please join us to celebrate!
December 17, 2016 is a good example of why almost every month I recommend checking our website to be sure that we are dancing. With more snow forecast for late evening we felt that most people wouldn't want to risk going out. I'm hoping for clear roads for all the dance nights in the coming year.
What about our Canned Food Dance, you ask? We hope that everyone brings it to our next dance. That is the advantage of having nonperishable items for those in need. It will keep until the weather allows us to collect it and see that it goes to the Food Bank.
December brought to the area a winter wonderland of snow and Ice. R Square D, for the love of the dance continued on with the toy dance on the 9th. It was a dance for our beginners, B-51, and they too braved the weather to come out and celebrate the season. Three squares kept the cold at bay as Craig Abercrombie and Lonnie Sycks keep everyone moving. $350.00 dollars of toys were brought to the dance and donated to the Salvation Army the following Day. Amazing! Thank you to all that brought so that those who have little would be helped. We had multiple visiting clubs that braved the cold to join us on the brisk evening.
R Square D had it Christmas Party, potluck and a short meeting on the 12th. We have many talented dancers that bring home crafted items. The fight to secure these items is always fun as we play it along with 3 steals for each item. The auction is always fun, every year.
February is the sweetheart month and we will celebrate it with a Valentines dance on the 10th. The 25th finds us enjoying the dancing, with our new students, as they continue to learn at a B-51 dance. The students that started in October are continuing on with mainstream. Congratulations to them all.
For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

At our December dances the weather outside was frightful but the dancers in the Hall were all feeling delightful. With Mike Stout’s energetic calling and Ken Pratt’s skillful cueing it put all the dancers in a festive mood, and also we were all so thankful for the visitors, too. Also, on December 10th, 13 club members traveled to the Columbia River Dancers dance and had a great time dancing to Mike Stout and Ken Pratt.
Our Promenaders Plus dances are on Thursday, February 2nd, and 16th with Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Ken Pratt cueing.
The Sunset Promenaders dances are Saturdays February 4th, and 18th which are our Mainstream Dances. With Mike Stout calling and Ken Pratt cueing, the theme for the dances is “Honoring Our Presidents”.
Our Mainstream Classes have started on each Sunday, at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall from 4:00 to 6:00. The classes are closed to new students except for previous dancers wanting to refresh their dancing skills.

In December the Toes have a club tradition. We all head for the Kinton Grange and decorate the hall for the holidays then go out to dinner together. Fun evening for us. We chose not to cancel our first dance of December because of bad weather and found many dedicated square dancers joined us. We had a turnout of 30 dancers. Who would have guessed? Another fun evening with great friends. We did something new this year with attending the Tualatin Valley Community Band’s holiday concert. Our club member, Tim Roberts plays in the band and we all had a wonderful start to the holidays, then went out to dinner afterwards. Thanks Tim for the great opportunity to begin the holidays on a high note.
Hope your New Year was a warm and toasty one. Many went to the TVC dance that night. Bev and Harlan Flint have announced they will not be teaching Round Dance lessons this year. Both will be missed this January sharing their fun rhythms and dance experiences with us. During January the Toes will be having an experienced clothing sale at both dances. Hope you come and check it out. Mainstream lessons resumed January 3rd and we are expecting our great group of new dancers to be ready for Mid-Winter Festival 2017.
February starts out with our Heart and Roses Dance on the 3rd and the 17th for our regular dance. Let’s leave our cold weather behind us by warming up our hearts and bodies to our great caller and cuer for the Toes, KC and Bev. We do appreciate you and your spouses. Let’s go forth into 2017 square dancing up a storm.

What a great Ugly Christmas Sweater Dance we had to finish the year! Our biggest dance to date! Our club worked together to decorate the hall and we had a wonderful dinner with many visitors. Thank you to Kathy Roberts for the abundance of Christmas decorations!
Winter has started off with a nice bang! Cold weather didn’t stop us from starting lessons. All of our advertising is paying off! We will not be hosting dances in January and February as we focus in on developing our new dancers. We would love the help of other angels to come out on Wednesdays. Our dances will resume on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday’s in March. The first half student level dance, break then the remainder at Mainstream level until we are at full mainstream level with our new dancers.
The Tualatin Timber Squares won the trophy from the Oakey Doaks with 62% of our members in attendance! We will be hosting our trophy dance March 22nd in conjunction with our New Dancer Dance. Students of other clubs will be counted towards that club’s percentage. Please encourage your new dancers to come out and support our new dancers and see who wins the trophy!
We will be celebrating our First Anniversary April 26th with a Black, Red, Silver theme (club colors).
If you would like to be added to the TTS weekly newsletter to keep up on all of the adventures and where the Banner Bandits are hitting next send an email to OregonSquareDance@gmail.com
Valley Squares had a quiet December because we cancelled our December 17th dance, thanks to snowy roads and chilly weather. Brrr! How much more is ahead?
Our Mastering Mainstream lessons ended on Tuesday December 6th. Darrell Kalmbach was an outstanding instructor and taught us from every position so we sharpened our minds and our skills.
A lot of our members went to Columbia River's Beatles Dance featuring Mark Wheeler. Although our Official Visitation was after Thanksgiving, enough members attended the Beatles extravaganza that we captured a banner.
Mark is planning a 60's Dance for us in the upcoming weeks. Should be lots of fun. Please join us. We dance 1st & 3rd Saturdays at Aloha Grange, starting at 7 p.m. Mainstream with every third tip Plus. Hope to see you in a square.

The Wave Steppers’ free Wednesday night square dance classes resumed January 4th, after a 5 week break for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The classes are on the dance floor at the Tillamook Elks lodge, 1907 Third Street in downtown Tillamook.
The Club’s 2017 dance season doesn’t begin until March, but we’ll be doing a square dance demo for the residents and staff of the Five Rivers retirement home in Tillamook in February. It’s the second time the Wave Steppers have performed there.
The Wave Steppers’ first dance of 2017, a St. Patrick’s Day dance, will be Saturday, March 11th on the big dance floor at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 6th Street (at Acacia), with club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel. (That’s the same weekend as the Championship Crab Races, one of the town’s biggest festivals.) In April, the Club’s Spring Fling dance will feature Jim Hattrick as caller and cuer.
We have been dancing the month away! We took a large group down to Medford for the Midway Dance. All of our students who traveled with us were able to earn their purple heart dangle during the dance…not to mention get in more floor time just in time for Mid-Winter.
January brings us to our New Dancer Dance. This is the perfect time to brush up on all the calls before you head to Albany for the Mid-Winter Party. This dance will be held on January 22, at 2:30 pm. The Umpqua Area Council is putting on this dance. If you are in the area, please join us at the barn for an afternoon of fun!
We welcomed in the New Year with a great dance. Everyone, including our new dancers, enjoyed a festive celebration. Spending time with people you enjoy and dancing in the New Year is one of the best ways to spend New Year’s Eve!
Happy dancing,
