Oregon Federation News
April 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 April 2017
President's Corner

April is approaching and we all hope that spring has arrived and that gardens are planted and lawns are starting to be mowed. But then again, with the recent history of our weather conditions, who knows what we are all doing when not dancing?

How many of you are making your summer travel plans for various festivals, dance weekends, or just plain fun? Have you included Summer Festival in Salem among your travels? It would be really nice to see many of you there enjoying the talent of the featured callers and cuers who will be there. It will be a fun weekend with plenty of activities planned. Dancing at the Capitol, getting snacks at the festival from the teens who will be manning the snack shack to help raise money for their travels.

March 25th will be a difficult day for many people. Two wonderful women will be laid to rest at separate memorial services. Marge Pentecost will be memorialized in The Dalles and Genevieve Churchill will be remembered at her memorial at the Sunset Presbyterian Church where the Eager Beavers dance. It should be a huge event. Come and share your thoughts about each one at whatever service you attend.

The Federation Youth Coordinator wrote an excellent article in the March issue of the OFN. If you did not read it, go back and find it and let her information sink in when you think of the parents who support their children in square dance activities. Lots to think about.

I will be attending an award recognition dance in Eastern Oregon on April 8. Three people will be recognized for their efforts in supporting square dance and all associated activities. Merri Anne Huber and Bill and Neva Reid will be recognized by the Washington Federation, but these dancers are also Oregon Federation members that we can be proud of also.

I will also be traveling to other parts of the state when time allows during the remaining time of my presidency. I will make it to all 10 councils by the time I go out of office.

Remind your clubs to take time to vote for Federation officers and get the ballots back in time by May 1.

Marilyn Schmit
President

Editor's Note

And so we have finally reached spring!  I, for one, will be glad to see this winter fade away.  I had quite enough of that white stuff falling from the sky.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about getting your information posted here.  I have a link every month to an article that summarizes the ways to do that, but if anything is confusing. you have my email address.

Following up on the information on Genevieve Churchill below, her Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 25, at 11 AM, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Rd, Beaverton.  Square dance attire is encouraged.  After the celebration, Daryl Clendenin will call a tip in the gym.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Annual Membership Information Update

Every year, in the first half of the year, we ask all clubs and councils to update their membership information, to prepare for printing the state directory.  We ask that you update the information after you have elected your officers for the new square dance year, so that the information is correct when the directories are distributed in September.  At this time, the annual membership dues also become due.  Attached is a letter being sent from the Membership Chairman, Sylvia Davis, to all of the Area Delegates telling them about this process.

Dear Council Delegate,

As the Area Delegate, you play a key role in making sure all the membership information for the clubs in your council get correctly updated and printed in the State Directory.  You need to make sure that each club receives an instruction letter telling them how to fill out the Club Information Form online.  Then, you need to make sure that you fill out the Council Information Form online.  Then, you need to collect all the checks for dues and Where and When information from your clubs, have your treasurer deposit those checks in your council account and write a single check to the OFSRDC for State dues and Where & When, and mail it to the Membership Chairman.

To fill out the Council Information Form, go to the Federation’s web site at squaredance.gen.or.us/ClubInfo.  Please follow the instructions to complete the form.  Please verify the accuracy of the information you enter.  Double-check the spelling of last names and cities, where many spelling errors occur.

The information your club provides will be used to create the State Directory and update the Where & When section of the Oregon Federation News (OFN).  Remember that the Directory is printed and distributed in September and therefore, your information should reflect the officers that will be in effect at that time.

BE SURE THE TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER AND THE NON-PROFIT VERIFICATION INFORMATION IS CORRECT on the online form.  Also please remember that it is your responsibility to submit a council check to the Membership Chairman to cover the state membership dues and Where and When fees for your council and all the clubs in your council (do not include any council dues).  You should include a summary sheet showing which clubs paid which amounts.  Please try to have this check to the State Membership Chairman by the July 16, 2017 state meeting.

State dues are $20.00.

Your help and assistance in this task is greatly appreciated.

Sylvia Davis
Membership Chairman

March 4th we had a nice visitation with the Independence Wagon Wheelers. We were graciously welcomed and given our banner back It is a long way to go, but at least it didn't rain constantly or snow or hail on us. Good conversation while on the road helps make the time pass quickly. On April 1st, we hope to see more people out for our visitation to dance to Mike Sikorsky in the Buckeroo Barn at Roseburg. We need to get back our banner from them too!

On April 28th we will be having our Psychedelic 60s dance with Scott Zinser and Christina Corelli. That should be a hoot if everyone dresses the part.

Our birthday dance on February 25 was well-attended and festive. Thanks to all who came to help us celebrate!

On February 27, we graduated our newest class of mainstream dancers, who are a fun and enthusiastic group. Many thanks go to Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell who did a great job shepherding the new dancers along to become solid square dancers.

By the time this OFN comes out, we will have had our Coast Retreat the weekend of March 10-12. Highlights include the dancing, of course, and the social time including the group potluck on Saturday at noon. It's not too early to save the 2nd weekend in March for next year's Coast Retreat! Karen

We had a great dance February 20. We had 17 visitors from Silver City Squares which made for a really fun night. We had over 4 squares! We donated $250 to the Silver City Squares youth for their competition in Canada. We haven’t been in the “News” for a while if you don’t know who we are we dance in Woodburn on the odd Monday nights at The Estates auditorium. We have a great dance floor. Randy Dibble is our caller and Jackie Gale is our cuer. We start with rounds at 7pm followed by squares at 8pm with every 3rd tip Plus. When there is a 5th Monday we have “Pie Night” which we usually have a good turnout. Lots of home-made pie. Our next Pie Night is Memorial Day. We would love to see you!

Hope to see you in a square.

Our first dance in March was a wonderful event. We were pleased to have a visitation from several Single Trees and Danebo Circle 8’s. And if that was not enough, we were surprised by a raid from the Whirl-a-Ways. For those of you who have not participated in a raid before, it is an enjoyable way of visiting a club. Since the club being raided does not know that you are coming, it is important that the club doing the raiding bring snacks with them. This way the club being raided does not feel the need to go out to the closest store and purchase food.

At our second dance in March we celebrated our 57th birthday. This is always a fun dance. Our board members take care of the door, kitchen and decorations and the club provides cake and ice cream. This way the club members get to just come and enjoy the dance without any of the responsibilities that go along with putting on a dance.

Happy Dancing. Linda Neuschwander

February was a really busy month for our club. Our first dance on February 4 was a fifties dance with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Poodle skirts were very popular. This dance was also our New Dancers dance so we had an experienced clothing sale. On February 11 we helped Sweet Home Squarenaders celebrate its birthday. Great dance! Jim Voll called and Jackie Gale cued. We had a regular dance on February 19. Then we traveled to Corvallis for their birthday dance. Each Sunday evening the Lebanon Square Circlers are having Plus lessons also.

March 4 is our Hippie dance. Many of our club members are going to the Coast March 10-12 to participate in the Corvallis Squares Coast Weekend. That will be a fun weekend.

Our Mystery Trip is planned for April 29 and we are looking forward to traveling with members of other clubs. Then, of course, we are getting ready for the Strawberry Festival the first weekend of June. Hope you are planning to come. See you in a square! Marilyn York

As I write this article, our club is about to start Cha Cha lessons with some students who have not had intermediate lessons before. We are looking forward to having some new faces in our lesson hour from 7:30-8:20. We continue to have floor time in the first and third hour. We have been dancing some favorites and some dances that are not danced often. It is always good to have variety.

Some of our dancers attended the Beach Ball and had a good time. The weather was not the best but they made do.

We have some dates to fill while Cheryl attends various events for dance and family. Our Vice-President is charged with getting guest cuers for those dates. Stay tuned for announcements of when. Come join us and get some floor time for your dancing pleasure. Marilyn Schmit

As I write this we just finished with our Hobo Dance on March 3. It was great fun. Thanks to Danny Rickard for the awesome decorations and idea for this dance, to Lanie Rickard for making the three delicious Hobo stews that everyone enjoyed and to all of the dancers who joined us and made it a great night. Check out our Facebook page for photos.

March also has our St. Patrick's Day Dance on the 17 where everyone is wearing the green and dancing the night away. And we have a 5th Friday Plus Dance on the 31st.

We have 13 new students learning to square dance at our Wednesday lessons, one of which is only 8 years old and she loves to twirl.

On April 21 we will celebrate our 51st year as a club. Come join the fun. We will also be electing new club officers in April. Next month’s report will have those names.

We dance on the first and third Fridays of the month. If there is a 5th Friday, we have a Plus dance. We dance year round so please come on over to the Salem Square Dance Center and dance with us. See you on the dance floor. Sheila Machado

It has been a fun year of dancing so far. We had some trouble with the weather but spring is on the way.

We have had a Disney theme dance, a chili feed dance, a chocolate dance and Mardi Gras dance since the first of the year with lots more themes to come. We will be having the Girls Night out calling our first dance in April and a Star War theme dance in May, plus lots more fun dances. So come join us the first and third Fridays of the month for great dancing. Sandy

Yo, Bachelors and Bachelorettes, come get your banner! You know, the one we captured on March 1, because we had, like, 9 or so members there. The gauntlet has been thrown!

Here’s a huge shout out for a quick recovery to our own Sharon Dibble. Hip, Hip, Hooray!!

Thank you to all of the dancers who helped us celebrate our 17th birthday. The floor was filled with our members and friends; the dance community across Oregon and Southern Washington give us all a sense of belonging. Those connections are priceless.

Lessons are off to a great start, and we are absolutely delighted that we have some young ‘uns participating. They are doing great despite the sashayed square of angels doing their best to disrupt the classroom.

Randy’s Kennewick plus challenge weekend kept him away from our plus dance, but we thank George Hermann for putting us through our paces. We had a grand time!

And, speaking of randy Randy, if you are at a workshop and you see him pull out index cards, run for your life. He’s choreographing competition dances and we are his guinea pigs. Seriously, it is a blast dancing with the Valley River Dancers…it’s always unpredictable, exciting, and the formations are often novel. We learn new things all of the time, which keeps us on our toes. Join us for the fun!

As always, we enjoy our time together either dancing and/or socializing. After a long, hard winter, with the season of spring around the corner, we are anticipating upcoming dances with a spring in our step! We invite everyone to join us. Jodee Howard

There’s been much discussion about getting background checks for callers and cuers who are involved in youth activities, or where there is repeated contact with youth. This would be mostly at the state level dances, since most clubs have few if any children attending.

Standardizing caller and cuer contracts are also being discussed, with a lot of great input by Scott Zinser.

We thank the Valley River Dancers for their March 1 visitation. We frequently get visitors from there, but an official visitation was quite a surprise!

Like many clubs, this is our club anniversary month. And it’s a great time to join our club. Particularly If you’re unhappy with your own club, why not give our club a whirl? Consider our dues: for $12 a year, one will get at least three free dances. Why, one can even MAKE money with such a deal!

Spring! Woo hoo! In April we are celebrating spring and our 59th anniversary as a square dance club. Our anniversary dance is on Saturday, April 15th at the Hazel Dell Grange. It will be all singing calls. We will have Roger Puzler as our guest caller. Our cuer for the night will be Patty Herman. Door prizes will be abundant and "Bee" related.

Our cuer for the April Fool's dance is Debbie Combs . Obviously, that would be on April 1st at the Hazel Dell Grange.

We are proud to announce that we have graduated 7 new Square dancers from our lessons group and welcome them into our club. It was a great graduation dance. We are proud of them.

Yabba, dabba, doo we had a super time at our Flintstone dance on February 17th - thank you, all, for your enthusiasm. Darrell (and Erin) Kalmback brought high energy levels to the Flintstone dance in their "Flintstone" attire and by customizing songs with Bedrock words/lyrics. 'Lil Sandra Pinion added flare to our Round Dance cues. WOW, that was a fun time! Costume prizes were awarded to: adult male/female: Robert and Yung, youth male/female: Ethan and Trinity.

We introduced new Officers at our March 3rd dance. Retiring President (that's me) thanked our former Club Officers for their past two years of service by awarding a gift, a Bobble-head "Dino" the Dinosaur (blue and purple, of course) solar toy - our first Mascot, appropriate since our "Flintstone" dance celebrates our Club's anniversary dance. Retiring officers were: President, Betty Chipps with six-years of service and Vicki Pounds, as Secretary (duties fulfilled in 2016 when incumbent Secretary resigned) and Roberta Elders, PAC Representative (a position served for multiple years). New Officers were introduced: Bill (& Cindy) Sanford, President; Paulette Stahlecker, Secretary (and wife to Bruce Stahlecker, Sheriff); Betty Chipps, PAC Representative and Roberta Elders as 2nd PAC Rep. Some officers from last year will serve another term - they are: Tim Kane as Vice President, and Vicki Pounds as our "Bean Counter" (Treasurer) and Web Master. Much thanks to all who stepped forward to carry the Officer duties of Chaps and Petticoats.

Mark your calendars for our April 21st "Go Hog Wild Dinner/Dance," Tim Kane has donated the pig, roasts the pig AND calls the Dance - he is joined on stage by Cheryl Manley, cuer. Dinner served at 6:45pm, Rounds at 7:30pm and Mainstream at 8:00pm.

When you attend our 1st Friday and 3rd Friday dances, be sure and thank Vicki Pounds, who most frequently opens our Grange doors for our callers and cuers to set up.

Have a blessed Easter!

“The First of April, so called Prima Aprilis (from Latin prima, day; aprilis, humbug) is the only day of the year when elements, thoughts, words, and senses, all rushing towards springtime, observe a crazy, mad carnival and thanks to a traditional privilege abandon themselves to cosmic pranks, interplanetary riot, surprises of unleashed chaos, when at every step triumphant drivel flies in the face of the usual order of things!” -- Antoni Słonimski and Julian Tuwim, in W oparach absurdu [In the Fumes of Absurd] (in Polish), 1958.

On the first Saturday of April, the Oaky Doaks will be enjoying the “traditional privilege” by doing like it says. Abandoning ourselves to pranks, surprises and triumphant drivel at our Fun Dance! Can you dance with a box on your feet, a sack over your head or a bean bag on your head? Can you take a joke or laugh with everyone else when you discover that you are at the center of a prank? Come join us on April 1st and be a part of the merriment and fun that we will be having.

The Anglo-Saxons called April ēastre-monaþ. The Venerable Bede says in “The Reckoning of Time” that this month ēastre is the root of the word Easter. He further states that the month was named after a goddess Eostre whose feast was in that month. It is also attested by Einhard in his work, “Vita Karoli Magni”.

On Saturday, April 15th, the Oaky Doaks will be having a Gospel Dance in recognition of the day. Gather with us as we get together with our fellow square and round dancers to commemorate and rejoice the following Sunday’s event with song, food and dance. It will be such enjoyable entertainment that maybe the other symbol of the holiday might stop by with some of his fowl gifts and sweets to celebrate with us as well. Everyone is bound to have a “Hoppy” good time.

See you on the dance floor,

Gary

Spring marks new beginnings, and so it is with River City Dancers.

On February 12th, we sent our caller couple, Les and Paula Seeley, off with a grateful, wondful flourish marked by “The Crew and Rudd”: Daryl Clendenin; Randy Dibble; Jim Hattrick; and Renee’ Rudd (with the latter’s permission, sometimes known as “The Crewdd” (excuse the spelling). Tami Helms and Tim Keck donated their Cueing. It was a wonderful/sad/glad event to a packed house at Milwaukie Community Center.

We will be having Guest Callers until November, with feedback forms available to the membership. According to our plan, the Caller Selection Committee will pick the top three candidates, and we will vote our selection at the November General Meeting.

Another historic first: at a recent membership meeting, River City Dancers, formely a “Couples Club’ is now accepting singles as new members. If you are interested in formally joining us, talk to any officer or member, and we will start the process.

Forty-two members enjoyed Winter Festival in Albany this year. Thank you to all the workers who put it on. It’s a great effort and we are proud to participate. We look forward to Summer Festival in Salem this year at the Salem Blanchet Catholic School.

The Charlie's have enjoyed getting back into the dancing spirit. Hopefully the weather will not affect our dancing anymore!

Congratulations to our newest graduates!!! Our September class graduated on March 14th and will be starting to workshop and improve their skills. We had 6 that graduated. We hope to keep them excited about dancing and learning.

Our March dances were lots of fun; Ray called our 1st Saturday dance and Mary Nutt cued. Ray was out of town for our 3rd Saturday dance, so we got to welcome Wayne Weaver back from a 3 month vacation. He called our "Awkward Moments" dance and Bob Dingman cued. We had a great turnout with 3 plus squares; we even had 3 squares for the A1 tip - which was wonderful!! The Stars stole a banner; so the Charlie's will be coming for theirs soon!

The Charlie's stole a banner from the Rogue Squares when we enjoyed dancing on St. Patrick's Day to Lawrence Johnstone from Ukiah, CA. Lawrence is a great caller, so if you've never danced to him you're definitely missing out - he is a lot of fun!

We are dark at our hall on April 1st, but we will still be dancing. We will be in Roseburg to enjoy dancing to Mike Sikorsky on April 1st, and The Crew on April 2nd. Don't miss out - and we will see you up there!

April 15th will be called by Ray and rounds with Steve Murphy; always a fun time!

We are getting excited for the Boatnik Festival!! Don't forget to get your ribbons; which you can do online; or with any committee member. The fabulous Hunter Keller & Randy Lewis will be our featured caller & cuer. Get your ribbons before the registration price goes up!

The Charlie's look forward to seeing our friends in a square soon!!

For those of you who dance Mainstream and are trying to earn your badge, the Eager Beavers who normally dance Plus are having their Anniversary dance on April 23rd as a Mainstream dance. It will be held at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

The TVC’s "Sunday Afternoon Delight", dance on March 5th was a big success with over ten squares attending. The dance featured popular International caller Gary Shoemake with Yvonne Clendenin cueing.

Our next Council dance will be a 5th Saturday “Spring Fling Dance” at the Aloha Grange on April 29th, 2017. Mike and Julie Stout will be the caller and cuer with a mainstream format and pre-rounds.

Our Pajama dance was not a sleeper. Caller Jim Hattrick was decked out in his long nightgown and his night cap. Lots of laughs were had at the expense of those who took to the theme.

This month we celebrate our second anniversary with Adam Christman calling and cueing. It being close to St. Paddy's day we will have the wearing of the green and Irish treats.

Lessons are going strong. We have a beginner's class starting the first Tuesday of each month so if you have someone who wants to learn, send them down. With our "angels" we had over three squares of dancers last Tuesday.

Come dance with us. Our goal is to have everyone dance so even if you are a single, we welcome you.

What? Another Anniversary Dance? You just had one. You know how time flies when you are having fun. Join us Sunday, April 23rd at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall. Pre Plus 1:00 to 1:30 pm, Mainstream 1:30 to 3:30 pm with chicken dinner at 3:30 pm. All this for $6 and you can dance both MS and Plus with our three great callers. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and get your TVC Ambassador form signed from a plus club.

Our King and Queen of Hearts Dance celebrated not only Valentine’s Day but also the first of our Plus Lessons. This year Marie Clem and Bob Allen were chosen by lottery as Queen and King of Hearts. They wore their crowns with dignity, even if they did tend to slip a little, and behaved as royalty must toward the hoi polloi. It was fun.

Nearly three squares of our members attended the Hoedowners Anniversary Dance which included a chicken dinner. As usual the Hoedowners throw an excellent party and a good time was had by all.

Our Plus lessons continue with our three excellent callers from noon to 1:15 pm. Students have the option to stay for a couple of tips with the club and practice what they have learned. Our $4 donation is a bargain.

We dance on most holidays so even those of you who are not retired can join us once in a while. Our three callers, Jim Hattrick, Daryl Clendenin, and Darrell Kalmbach keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:15 to 3:00 pm, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Come out and brush up, the $4 covers the whole 3 hours.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

We have 13 people taking lessons. It is very exciting. We think that most of them will join the club which will be thrilling if they do. One gentleman has already asked if he could join. As far as our dances, it has been hit and miss due to the weather.

Hayshakers are now dancing the 1st Fridays from 6:30 pm. Harvey Hunsucker caller & cuer. Dance is at the Pacific Grange, 90475 Hwy 101, Cullaby Lake, at Warrenton, OR. Be sure to call first to make sure we have enough people for a dance. 503.325.8109, 503.861.2726, 503.325.2100. www.hayshakers.org

We had so much fun in February I can hardly believe it was only 28 days. We held two make-up classes for our new dancers on the 1st and 8th. This class of 15 was truly amazing and those last two classes allowed them to really hone their skills.

Our Mad Hatter Tea Party Dance was February 11th and what a variety of hats attended, the mundane, the lyrical, the lighted! The dining room was adorned with tea cups and tea pots but where were the Queen of Hearts and the White Rabbit? I think they were on the dance floor all evening.

Wednesday, the 15th was our Annual Hoedowner Potluck-Graduation-Meeting. The buffet tables were laden with delicious food of all sorts. Nothing tastes better than another person’s cooking. We had plenty of time to visit and when the door prizes were drawn Kelly McCaw won the vintage set of square dance tumblers and Curt Brehmer won the free night’s stay at the Marriott.

February 25th was our 67th Anniversary Dance and what a celebration it was! We had over 100 join us for our chicken dinner, replete with baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, rolls, and cake. We were tucking chairs in everywhere. And after dinner the Aloha Grange was rocking with 11 squares on the floor and more attendees sitting on the sides. Thank you to the Toe Draggers and Sunset Promenaders for making this a club visitation. We always enjoy your company. Richard Lane, Darrell Kalmbach and Casey Curtis joined Daryl on stage and those voices blend so well together. We used our Black and White Sparkle decorations as we had to cancel that dance in January because of the weather. Love to see dancers in their black and white best. Special kudos to Beth Procassini for her vintage black skirt and top bedecked with hundreds of silver sequins and a shout out to David and Colleen Van Winkle for their matching, sparkling outfits that Colleen sewed especially for this dance. You are setting the bar very high.

I’m not looking forward to any April showers. I’ve had quite enough already but I am looking forward to:

April 8th: Denim and Diamonds Dance, everyone has at least one of the two in their closet and;

April 22nd: Hope to “Sea” You Dance, I’m leaving my swimsuit at home but beachwear and cruise wear will do.

As I write this, the weather remains a conversational topic. In spite of winter hanging on, good attendance has come along. We have been enjoying the lively, friendly Valley River Dancers, as well as dancers from other clubs. Switching to half an hour early for opening and closing seems to be a winner with the dancers, many of whom stay for the last dance now.

In the OFN I noticed someone wanting a way to know if dances will be held in bad weather when it's a last minute decision. She thought that Facebook posting might be the answer. Since I don't do social media, I continue to encourage readers to check our website, which seems to work for everyone.

At midwinter our own president, Dan Knierim and wife Debbie, were in the second place square for Last Square Standing. Way to go everyone!

R Square D Dance Club welcomed all sweethearts to a Valentines dance on February 10th. Visiting clubs of Cougar Squares and Ruff and Ruffles came to dance to the love songs being called by Craig Abercrombie and Lonnie Sycks. Columbia River dancers retrieved a banner that R Square D had taken a while back. The floor stayed busy with 4 squares sashaying around the room.

The 25th of February brought out all our new dancers with a B-51 dance. Whoo-Hoo, 10 new dancers came out along with lots of visitors to welcome them. A big Thank You goes out to Ruff & Ruffles and Harbor Haylofters. Prairie Steppers and Cougar Squares both retrieved banners to take home. Thank you to Dick and Sandy Sims for hosting the dance.

Many thanks go out to Mary McDaniel and Marv Pope for hosting the club meeting this month.

R Square D celebrates 64 years of Square dancing as a club on April 14th. Please come out and have some cake with us as we continue to honor this dance we all love.

NOTE: April 22nd, R Square D will be dark. We will be travelling east to visit the Yakima Sashay with the Salty Sashayers.

For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

Our April dances are:

• The first Saturday of April the Club is DARK, April 1st, because we are dancing at the Valley Squares Anniversary Dance.

• The third Saturday, April 15th, is our Easter Parade Dance. This will be a good time to dress up and show off your best clothes or just come to the dance, enjoy dancing, and your friends. Our dance times are now 7:00 to 7:30 Intermediate Rounds, 7:30 to 9:30 Mainstream dance, with Mike Stout calling and Ken Pratt cueing.

• Our Promenaders Plus dances are on April 6th and 20th, come and enjoy Darrell Kalmbach’s Plus calling and Ken Pratt’s cueing.

If parking on the street is full, you can park in the lot at the Premier Community Bank just across the street.

We appreciate the Buzzin’ Bees Club visitation, we had six squares of dancers, and they were a lot of fun. Their hall is in Vancouver so they had a long trip to get to Hillsboro, but they said they enjoyed themselves. Their caller and wife, KC and Linda Curtis came too. Thanks.

Our lessons are coming along well and we have a great group of 11 students which makes it fun for the “Angels” too. We really hope to get several members from this group as the club has been losing more dancers than gaining in the last several years.

I'm so glad the weather has decided to warm up for all of us. Spring, we are ready for you. The Toes have been busy out on visitations dancing with our friends at Tri-Squares and the Hoedowners. It was great to see so many dancers out supporting each other’s clubs.

Dancing with the Leprechauns in March keeps us on our toes. Our Pot of God is full of square dancing friends that we keep year after year. We all are so blessed in the square dance world. Thanks to Sandra Pinion for stepping in for Bev and Harlan for the month of March. We are wishing both Bev and Harlan healthy bodies, so we can have them back on the dance floor.

April 7th is our regular dance with Julie Stout starting us out with pre-round dancing at 7:30 pm. Thanks Julie for helping the Flints out. This dance will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in Hillsboro and April 21st is our famous Ducky Dance starting with pre-plus at 7:30 pm with KC and Linda. Molly Combs will be stepping in for Bev and Harlan. Thanks Molly. Be sure to wear yellow and be ready to flap your wings out on the floor. The Toes are looking forward to our Mystery trip on April 22nd. These extra club activities are so much fun and help the club members get to know each other better, especially for our new dancers.

We hope you come and visit us with this warmer weather ahead. I cannot believe how fast this year has flown by. We are looking at selecting a new slate of club officers for next year. We are thankful for our members who step up and help to make our club so much fun. The Toes are the best. See you in a square.

Please note our dance dates have changed due to inclement weather in the beginning of the year. Our first dance in 2017 is going to be a trifecta of celebrations! Trophy dance! Anniversary Dance! New Dancer dance! We will be hosting this Grand Trophy Dance April 26th! The club with the highest percentage of membership in attendance will win the trophy! Students of other clubs will be counted towards that club’s percentage. Please encourage your new dancers to come out and support our new dancers and see who wins the trophy! Everyone who comes gets to go home with a dangle.

January's weather kept us iced in and dancing in front of fireplaces or heat registers to stay warm. We had to cancel our 1st Saturday dance and our first set of lessons because of Old Man Winter.

Our Celebrate Diversity Dance called by Janienne Alexander and cued by Connie Clark had five squares of folks itching to dance after the hiatus. Thanks to all of our guests, you brought wonderful energy. We were particularly impressed with new dancers from Toe Draggers & Rosetown Ramblers.

Our lessons, taught by Mark Wheeler, started on January 24th. I arrived late from Jefferson and when I walked in, three squares were dancing.

Please attend our March dances on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays. Also the first Saturday in April is our Anniversary Dance called by Scott Zinser & cued by Connie Clark.

Free square dance classes continue on the dance floor at the Tillamook Elks lodge, 1907 Third Street in downtown Tillamook. The classes are taught by club caller Joe Wrabek. Waltz classes, taught by veteran cuer Connie Clark, started in mid-February at the Rockaway Beach Community Center.

The Wave Steppers’ second dance of 2017, our Spring Dance, will be Saturday, April 8th on the big dance floor at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 6th Street (at Acacia), with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. About two-thirds of the building’s second floor is a dance floor, built in the 1940s by the Fire Department for the old Firemen’s Balls.

This month has been busy here at the Buckaroo Barn. We started the month with our Sweetheart Dance. We all had a great time being thankful for those close to us. Our next dance was our Sadie Hawkins Dance. During this dance we held a Relay for Life Fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. We were able to raise $545.00!

Our mainstream lessons finished and we began workshops to help support our new dancers. They really appreciate the extra floor time, and the extra practice is evident on the dance floor.

A large group of Buckeroos headed down to Medford to help the Star Promenaders celebrate their 60th birthday! We enjoyed a night of great dancing with Randy Dibble calling and Mary Ann Callahan cuing.

We are looking forward to spring arriving in the coming months. It has been a long winter!

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
