A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs
Printed 24 June 2017
President's Corner
Having returned from a successful weekend for Federation meeting in Roseburg, it is now time to sit down and put thoughts in writing for the next issue of the Oregon Federation News.
First of all, congratulations to the Oregon youth who went to Langley, British Columbia and competed in the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. After missing first place by less than half a point last year, they came home with all sorts of hardware representing their First Place in the Junior Division. Julia Buchheit cued at the Festival and she came home with a First Place trophy and her brother, Thomas, and Julia, did a round dance and came home with a third place trophy. I want to say thank you to all the callers, cuers, parents, and guardians who support their children to have a wonderful experience at the Festival each year. There is lots of practice and time away from home prior to the Festival, so these awards are much deserved. Remember, that the Festival is in Silverton, Oregon next May. Please support them in any way you can. Help at the Festival, support monetarily, and, of course, dance with them when they visit.
New officers of the Federation were revealed at the Federation meeting. They will be installed at the Federation meeting in September in Tigard at the Kinton Grange. Won’t you consider attending and see Kathy Roberts installed as the new President. It is sure to be an exciting event with her closest friends doing the installation. I am sure we will get a good laugh out of it.
Summer time means that some clubs go dark. Look in the OFN to see who is dancing this summer and keep dancing. Take your new dancers with you so they don’t forget what they learned in class and will be ready to attend the fall classes and pick up a few more hints to keep dancing. If you know when some classes start, you can start recruiting and get more dancers for the fall classes.
Summer Festival is just around the corner, and there is lots of room for more dancers at Blanchet Catholic High School in Salem. All kinds of dancing is available. Mainstream, plus, advanced, multiple phases of round dancing also. Very talented callers and cuers from Oregon and surrounding areas, as well as featured caller, Johnny Preston and featured cuers, Rey and Sherry Garza. Dancing at the Capitol and a tour of the Capitol are available also. The Wild Cards will call the Trails-In dance on Thursday evening at the Salem Square Dance Center. Help fill the rooms available for dancing and see friends that you haven’t seen since Mid-Winter. Time for a square dance reunion.
I will be around dancing, so hope to see you and gather some hugs along the way.
Marilyn Schmit President

R Square D was formed in 1953 and recently celebrated their 64th anniversary. One of their members, Jean Turner, has danced with the club for 63 of those 64 years. Jean and her husband, Pete, married in 1942 and they began taking lessons with R Square D in September, 1954, with MC/teacher Ralph Lindsay. They went to their first dance in December, 1954. At that time, there were only tip callers at the dances and often there would be a different tip caller for each tip throughout the dance. Jean and Pete enjoyed ballroom dancing before they started square dancing and they soon learned to round dance, too. In those days, the women had to make their own square dance dresses, skirts, blouses, men’s shirts and even their own petticoats. Pete and Jean were the President couple of R Square D in 1957 and they also served many times as Secretary or Treasurer of the club. The club danced at various locations, including Vasa Hall and Rose Valley Grange. In the late 1970s, the city of Longview allowed all the square dance clubs in the area to use a building on Industrial Way for their dances and lessons. The square dancers remodeled the building and installed a “floating” wooden floor. Pete spent many hours working on the floor and helping with other various projects. Pete died in 1990 (married for 47 years at that point) and Jean did not dance for a while after that. One day, she heard music at work (Canterbury Park in Longview) and saw that R Square D was doing a square dance demo for the residents of Canterbury Park. She saw friends there, who encouraged Jean to come back to dancing. She was warmly greeted when she returned and it was never a problem that she came as a “solo”. Jean turned 92 last November, but is still very young at heart. She is known at R Square D as “Jean, Jean, the Dancing Machine” and she still enjoys square and round dancing when she feels good.

Our 5th Saturday dance in April morphed into the area's benefit dance for Silver Knights, the teen group who is going to the Pacific Northwest Teen Competition in Langley, B.C. As of this reading, the competition will be over. We sent the teens to competition with our good wishes and good luck. All of the teens attending, their chaperones, and family members must pay their own way. We were thrilled to send them off with over two thousand dollars from the Emerald Empire Area Council. The calling and cueing for this dance was provided by members of CCCA and also the teen caller and cuer.
Prayers for our treasurer, Gail Jackson, on her recent cancer surgery. We pray for a complete recovery. We miss you Gail!
CCCA is inviting everyone to join us down in Winston at the Wildlife Safari for our annual benefit dance. We had to skip last year, but we are back. Dancing starts at 1:30 pm and ends at 4:00 pm. This is for a worthy cause and always a lot of fun. June 11th, the second Sunday follows the Buckeroo Roundup. What a nice end to a fun weekend that will be.
Our next CCCA dance isn't until September 30th. We are dark July 29th as the floor in Hall A at the Emerald Empire dance center is being refinished. We look forward to a beautiful floor when dancing resumes.
We had our 67th Birthday dance on April 15th with Lennie Ludiker calling and Sandy Harris cueing. We are dark for May, June and July. We are looking forward to our dance August 19th with Girls Night Out. Have a great summer!
On June 9th we have our "Reigning Cats and Dogs Annual Benefit Dance" for Greenhill. If you'd like to help, bring your clean old towels and blankets to comfort pets without a home. Dog and cat toys are good to donate, as well as good quality dry pet food (unopened). Checks to Greenhill are always appreciated as is cash. Jim Hattrick will be calling and Jackie Gale cueing.
On June 23rd Terry Halley will be calling with Jackie Gale cueing. Hope to see some visitors for this dance at the beginning of summer.

The Dan Nordbye dance in April was a big success. The dancers were delighted with Dan's calling. He comes to our area each year, and his calling just gets better and better. His program is upbeat and a challenge while remaining FUN! We look forward to his return to Oregon. Actually he'll be at the Buckeroo Barn the second weekend in June.
Ian Craig called advanced, mainstream and plus recently for our Spring Fling dance. Ian had serious heart issues recently, but that surely didn't deter him. Wow! A really fun program. The potluck was awesome, as always. The dancers enjoyed the Sunday dance. We're so glad Ian pulled through and was with us.
We are dark May 28th, for the Memorial Day weekend. We dance Sundays at 5:30 pm. Come and join us for some FUN floor time. Check the When and Where for any dark dates. Dark dates for us are few, but they do happen from time to time. We love visitors!
Happy dancing!

Congratulations to our youth group from Silver City Squares, the Silver Knights, for winning so many honors at their competition in Canada. We are so proud of them. See their report below.
We had a great Taco Dinner before our April dance. It's always a great evening when the Braids and Braids get together, even when it's just us. Our caller, Leonard Snodgrass, challenged us on the dance floor with some unusual patterns and guided us through the wrinkles with lots of laughter. He has a great variety of music, too. Sandra also kept the round dancers on their toes with her lively selections. Another great Braid and Braves dance. Visitors are always welcome.
We will be dancing through June and will be dark for July (Summer Festival) and August. We are planning a club campout/picnic for the last part of June.

On the weekend of April 22 approximately 50 of our members (about ½ of the club) spent the weekend at Yachats for our annual Koast Krash. Attendance at this function is one of the many benefits of being a member of the Independence Wagon Wheelers. Each year several members volunteer to chair this function and this year it was George and Patty Hermann, Gene and Bonnie Ivey, Ron and Neta Minten and Dave and Theresa O’Neill. The theme of the “Wizard of Oz” was picked for this year and everyone was encouraged to come in costume based on the theme. Most of the characters from the Wizard of Oz were represented, including the flying monkeys (they didn’t really fly!), but best of all was the apple tree. Plans for next year will soon be underway so if you would like to enjoy a wonderful weekend at Yachats next spring all you have to do is become a member of our club and have a great time.
Happy Dancing.

April was a busy month for our club with dances on the first and third Saturday nights. On April 29, we went on our "Super Mysterious" Mystery Trip. Our bus left Lebanon at 5:45 PM, picked up dancers in Albany and Salem; then headed EAST. That really surprised everyone. No one guessed our final destination. The Capitol Callers and Cuers Association sponsored this special dance at the Lyons Grange. Calling for the evening were Bruce Lowther, Leonard Snodgrass, and Charlotte Jeskey. Cueing were Judy Russell, Stephanie Lozano, Jackie Gale, and Ralph Lambert. It was a fabulous dance. There was lots of singing both going and coming back under the direction of Barb Schafer. Many thanks must be given to Frank Cawrse and his crew for their "Super Planning".
The next Lebanon dance will be our Taco Dance with Bill Jeskey the Chef. Charlotte Jeskey will be calling and Jackie Gale cueing.
Preparations for our STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL WEEKEND are in full swing and great items for the Silent Auction are being obtained. The major project is the building of our new trailer for the big parade on Saturday morning of the festival. The main trailer frame was contributed by John and Wanda Frenzel. Other items were contributed and many members have been gathering on Saturday mornings to complete the project. The weekend will be filled with dancing, potlucks, a parade, our experienced clothing sale, and lots of fun. Strawberry shortcake will be served on Saturday night. Please mark your calendar and come join us for this glorious weekend. See you in a square!

The cha lessons continue during May with the phase 3 steps completed and the introduction of phase 4 steps and floor time. We have a good group of students taking the class. Julia Buchheit is one of the students and she is competing in cueing at the teen competition in Canada. She got some stage time and cued her song from memory for the group in attendance before they left.
Cheryl has put together some plans for the fall season that will be shared soon for those who are interested in joining us. Keep in touch with us to see what is coming.
Summer is almost upon us and some will be gone at various times for conventions, family time, etc. Jeanine Norden will be our guest cuer for June 1. Come and enjoy her cueing and let her know we appreciate her coming down from Portland.

We WON!! We WON!! We WON!! We were at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival May 5-7. We won first place in Junior Squares. Thomas and Julia won third place in Basic B Rounds. Julia won first place in Novice Cueing. We tied with the Wesburn Wranglers for the Promotion Award.
Mom (Karyn Buchheit) brought home all the co-ordinator supplies for next year. She now has to go through everything and start work on the next Teen Festival. She does have the badges for next year and is getting them ready to be given to the participating teams/clubs at the June Teen Festival Committee meeting. She hopes to have the location for next year’s Teen Festival confirmed by the end of this month.
Thank you to everyone who attended our Spaghetti Dinner dance in May. We had a lot of fun as well as a good dinner. We also had our trophies out on display. Mom now has to get them engraved!
We will be dark June, July and August. However, our youth are running the concession stand at Summer Festival so we hope to see you there. You can purchase Teen Festival pins for next year at that time!!
We held our annual meeting and new officers were elected. Thank you to our dancers who stepped up and are willing to serve their club for the next year: President, Steve Zimmerman; Vice-President, Teija Danskey; Treasurer, Stan Danskey; Secretary, Jan Amerson.
We have some great dances planned and are looking forward to having Dan Nordbye calling with Randy Dibble at our dance on June 29. Hope you will all come and join us. We have also decided to increase our door to $6.00 per person, $3.00 for Youth (under the age of 18) and Family $15.00 (2 Adults and children under the age of 18). Hope to see you all in a square real soon.

Willamette Squares enjoyed its Maypole dance. By moving over and under in opposite directions of each other, the dancers wove colorful ribbons around the maypole. Each year as we gain experience, it goes more smoothly and is always fun as we welcome the month of May into our new year with the promise of spring.
We continue with our monthly dances on the 4th Saturday of each month. We are proud to report that we have eight graduates from the round dancing waltz class. We continue to support the upcoming summer festival by participating as dancers or volunteering and are looking forward to it. Big or small, we always enjoy our dances and extend a hearty welcome to anyone who wishes to attend.

We are proud to announce that starting this month, both tips after break will be plus tips. It’s the first time we’ve changed any of our format in years. Come join the fun!
Our rest rooms are still under renovation. The guys tell me all the toilets in their room have been disconnected, but as long as the floor drain works, they’re good to go (?) Of course, I’ve never been in there, but depend on the guys to give me reports.

Greetings from the Buzzin' Bees. As I write this (in May) we are down to two dances left in this Dance season. Hard to believe. Our final dance has a red white and blue theme and it is on June 3rd at the Hazel Dell Grange. Our Guest cuer will be Lonnie Syks. Our caller is the harmonica playing K.C Curtis. Pre-rounds start at 7:30 and squares start at 8 p.m.
The Bees have several things on their summer agenda. We plan a picnic on July 15th at Bill and Linda Lundin's home. Burgers and hotdogs provided. Bring a side dish or dessert to share. We also plan a campout August 11th through the 13th. Visitations are also on the agenda this summer. Come visit us for our final dance before it gets too hot to dance at the Grange. Hope to see you in a square.

Thanks to all of you who came to our Black Light Dance and helped us have fun in the spooky atmosphere at the end of April. Scott Zinser, dressed in all white so we could see him, did a great job of keeping us straight in the squares. The dancers donned there white gloves and tried to figure out who they were dancing with. Everyone seemed to have a fun time!
June will bring our special Father’s Day dance with Dan Nordbye and Julie Stiers. Take a break from the family, and dance with us at the Boring Barn on Sunday afternoon on May 18th. If you have not heard him, come check out a National Caller worth a few extra dollars to hear. Julie is a great cuer and also fun to dance with. See our flyer for all the details.
We dance all summer long, so come out and have fun with the Country Cut-Ups on the 1st and 4th Saturdays of the month. We will be having another 5th Saturday dance in July, so stay tuned for that event.

In April, a few of the Oaky Doaks got together and spent a weekend in Lincoln City wandering through the city wide yard / garage sales, having a pot luck, play games and, of course, square dancing. One of the places that we danced at was the Drift Creek Covered Bridge. The rainy weather was nice enough to give us a long enough break to dance a couple tips there.
The month of May found the Oaky Doaks experiencing happy and sad times. On the May 6th we celebrated 57 years of dancing to the calling of George Herman and cuing of Patty Herman. It also found us saying good-bye and farewell to our club caller / cuer couple Mike and Helen Halley on May 20th with the British Invasion dance being their last one with us. We were also on the road for a club visitation on May 13th to the River City Dancers.
Who wears short shorts? Come join the Oaky Doaks on Saturday, June 3rd, at our Shorts and Shortcakes dance to find out. Dance to the calling of Bruce Lowther and cueing of Molly Combs before heading off to enjoy delicious berry shortcakes during the break.
Calling all Parrot heads! It’s a big Jamaica Mistaica if on Saturday, June 17th, you don’t travel with the Oaky Doaks who will be heading to Margaritaville. We will be dancing to the music of Jimmy Buffett called by Mark Wheeler and cued by Molly Combs. Tropical attire admired but not required. Take a break and join us at the “bar” for virgin Margaritas and possible cheeseburgers in paradise.
June 30th members of the Oaky Doaks will be attending the Portland Area Council’s Fifth Friday Dance. They invite members of the other PAC clubs and other councils to square dance to Darrell Kalmbach and round dance to Tami Helms. Check the PAC flier for times and location.

Like all Oregon State Square Dance Clubs, River City dancers are holding important business meetings in June. There’s a new roster of officers, a bylaws change, and discussion about our future caller selection to be held this November. Thanks again to Tami Helms and Tim Keck for staying with us!
For those who have been curious about my health status, my Kaiser doctors are trying to get my atrial fibrillation (I call it “afib” for short) under control. Now they have me on some pretty heavy duty meds, which leave me exhausted even before I try to do anything. When I complain that my blood pressure is too low, they say something like, “you’ll get used to it”, but I’m not. So for all those ladies who are gracious enough to give my partner, Rocky, a dance tip, “THANK YOU!”. I can get through a couple of rounds, but I don’t like to square up unless the call is “short and sweet”. As for myself, I plaintively whimper, “but I’ve got to have some blood pressure, and when both numbers are below a hundred, I might feel terrible!”.
Nevertheless, we’re looking forward to Summer Festival in Salem. Hope to get lots of hugs for Rocky and I!

The Ramblers have been too busy to submit items for the OFN for the last several months, so this month we will make up for past omissions.
We elected our Board at our annual membership meeting in April:
President: Jeff Knapp
Secretary: Tiffany Naemura
Treasurer: Clint Maurice
Member at Large: Tara O’Neil
Member at Large: Jim Pettycrew
Class Representative: Dave Tedd
After the hard work of conducting club business, we got down to the real business of dancing. Stephen Cole—rescheduled from January snow to April showers—called our Black and White Dance. We were thrilled to host visitors from BnBs, Valley Squares, Chaps and Petticoats, and Floor Dusters. Almost everyone got into the spirit and looked splendid in many different variations of the black and white theme.
We are delighted to announce that we won the Trophy Dance hosted by Tualatin Timber Squares on April 26, since we were the club with the highest percentage attendance. TTS sure knows how to throw a party—they hosted close to 90 dancers and provided wonderful refreshments, clever decorations, and warm hospitality. It was a night we won’t soon forget. In fact, we are still having sweet dreams about the magnificent chocolate coconut cake prepared by Kathy Roberts — superb!
Because we won the trophy in April, it is now our turn to host a trophy dance. We are honored and excited to announce a Trophy Dance on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Milwaukie Grange with dynamic Don Wood calling. We invite one and all to enjoy Rambler conviviality—starting with dinner provided by our club members at 6:30 pm. We will dance from 7:30 to 9:30, alternating Mainstream and Plus tips. Our theme for the evening will be Over the Rainbow—dazzle us with your most vibrant hues. We enthusiastically welcome all dancers—including young, old, in-between, solo, and partnered. Look for a flyer in this edition of the OFN!

Come join the Tumbleweeds on June 16 to help us celebrate our long time member, Dell Uptegrove's, 100th Birthday. He is still dancing. An amazing guy, whom we all love. Guest caller will be Mike Halley. Cuers will be Tami Helms/Doug Hatch. Lunch will follow the dance! Of course, we would like to see you at all our dances.
The Charlie's are putting the finishing touches on our Boatnik Festival Memorial Weekend, featuring Hunter Keller & Randy Lewis. We are looking forward to seeing lots of friends, both old & new! It promises to be 3 days of wonderful fun!!! We also have a group of at least 20 dancers, including the caller/cuer, who will be taking a jet boat trip with us on Monday!! You really don't want to miss this fun weekend!
Our 1st Saturday dance on May 6th brought 2 squares and almost enough for a 3rd square dancing to Ray Holmes and rounds with Bob Dingman. No matter the amount of dancers, we always have fun! It was our Ole' dance and included lots of laughter, especially when we danced around sombreros!
May 20th is our Garden Party Plus/A1 dance with Ray Holmes & Steve Murphy and we hope for lots of friends. Will have an update in the next issue since the dance is after publication.
June 3rd is our Home Run Dance Mainstream/Plus dance w/Ray Holmes & Bob Dingman and June 17th is our Picnic on the Beach Plus/A1 dance w/Elaine Funk cueing.
There was a wonderful turnout at the Star Promenader's Amatuer Nite on May 13th; 5 squares dancing to several different caller and cuers. We all had a great time supporting the new talent in our area!
Our new club officers have now taken the reins and will be working hard to ensure the club is successful. We have lots of work to do, but I know we are all up for it. Congratulations to these officers and thank you for volunteering your time & energy!!
President: Louise Voss 1st VP: Wanda Andrews 2nd VP: Joe Zimmer Secretary: Rikki Lobato & Treasurer: Jeanne Lobato
Also - thank you to the outgoing board members: President: Randy Yoshida & Treasurer: Debbie Gent.
Looking forward to lots of great dances coming up in June, as well as the rest of the summer!!

On April 29th the TVC hosted a Spring Fling dance at the Aloha Grange. There were nearly 10 squares of dancers enjoying the calling of Mike Stout and cueing of Julie Stout. We all had a wonderful time. The Hayshakers claimed the TVC banner by having the highest percentage of their club present.
The Council has elected officers for the upcoming year with President Dale Brabham, Secretary Andis Geruts, and State Delegate Jim Rogers continuing their roles from last year. Our new Treasurer is Joanne Switzer. The new Alternate State Delegate will be Mary Schneider who is also the PAC Delegate. Outgoing officers are VP Kathy Roberts who is becoming the Oregon State Federation President, and Treasurer Carolene Siebert. Thank you for your dedication.
The Council voted to cast a vote in favor of the Background Check Recommendations proposal as presented at the Federation Meeting in January.
Our next Council event will be a 5th Saturday “Round Dance Party” at the IOOF Hall on July 29th, 2017. Ken Pratt will be the Cuer MC.

The song says, "June is busting out all over." Well, Maybe we should forget that April and so far in May it is acting like it was still winter. I have been assured that better weather is ahead. The Hazel Dell Grange can get warm but the CRDs have big fans that help to keep it cool. We will not be dark this summer. Those dances, by the way, are on the 10th and 24th of June with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing both dates.
Our lessons are doing well and will continue through the summer with a beginner's class on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 PM. The mainstream class begins at 8:30. Jim Hattrick will be teaching the classes. Jim has the philosophy to teach to the level of the class. That is, he moves the class along at a pace that insures the classes learn the moves, stay actively engaged and have fun dancing to what they know. Oh, yeah, we have round dance lessons from 6-7. Jim is teaching waltz in May but I have no idea what will be in June. Come out and see.
If your club goes dark and you are interested in keeping or improving your skill level, join us for the classes or our Saturday dances. We dance plus level from 7 to 8 and mainstream from 8-9:30 or 10. Our idea is for every one to dance so if you are a single, come on out.
April was a busy month with our weekly dances, classes, and our Anniversary Dance. Hope you had a tax refund and the Spring Cleaning is a breeze. Our three callers and cuers for our Anniversary Dance did an amazing job. The eighty-five attendees including some callers and cuers not only had a good time dancing they also enjoyed a great chicken dinner. All of this was made possible by the many club members who came early and stayed late to make sure all went smoothly. We appreciate your good work, and a special thank you to those who chaired the event; Karen, Sally, Mike & Ferrous. Thank you all.
NOTE: We will dance at the Aloha Grange on the following Mondays: Memorial Day on May 29th, and June 26th as the Church is hosting their annual Kids Day Camp.
Ask Kay Roger about reservations for our Beach Retreat in October. It is not too early.
Officers elected for the coming year are the following: Chief Dam Builder - Karen and Ferrous Steinka; Assistant Dam Builder - Sally and Mike Duyck; Log Thumper - Judy Martin; Gnawer - Marie Clem; TVC Delegate - Ken Marifke. Kay Rogers will remain for her second year as TVC delegate. They were installed by Dave Pebworth at the May club meeting.
All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.
Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

Our new students have continued to come faithfully each week. On a recent Saturday, the new students from Garibaldi (Wave Steppers) came to the Hayshakers and with our new students had a dance. It was very successful. We may in the future have another student dance with both clubs.
April 8th was our Denim and Diamonds dance, everyone casual and comfortable with just enough sparkle to brighten the dance floor.
Hope to Sea You was our ocean themed dance on the 22nd. The dining room was awash with shells and ocean center pieces and we noshed on beach foods.
Another great Hoedowner Beach Trip is in the books. The weekend of April 27, 28, 29 & 30 thirty-one members joined us for all or part of the extended weekend. We gathered on Thursday evening for the ever popular a potluck and most of us ventured down to the beach to watch a great sunset with the light streaming from behind billowy clouds. We were disappointed that the razor clam season at the Oregon coast was closed although most brought their clam guns and gear in case it opened. :( :( It did not.
Friday morning we had a wonderful breakfast table and kicked off several of our games and competitions. The “Who Am I?” game had people stumped for most of Friday with guesses as diverse as the Pope and Clark Gable. Finally Vicki Mulick correctly guessed Captain Hook and Will Wolter discovered him lurking in a toilet tank. Prizes for both! There was a heated game of baseball on the beach, guys against the gals. Amazingly it was an eight all tie (Ha!) despite the gals having one extra player and Doug Morgan’s tremendous hit that literally blew up the ball. We feasted on pizza for dinner, played pinochle teaching the Hoedowner method to any newbies, assembled jig saw puzzles, decorated sand dollars, and had a competitive bean bag tournament. Napping, did I mention napping?
Saturday morning found the crew lining up for Belgian waffles along with bacon and eggs. We played “Have You Ever?” It was very popular with this crowd as its played sitting down and for candy. A couple of Hoedowner car loads headed north to Camp Rilea for a few hours to see the vintage car show. The “100 Things” search was certainly heating up as groups scattered around town looking for an assortment of items and there was strolling, shopping, beach combing, photo snapping, and napping.
As the day wound down we dined on homemade clam chowder, hamburgers and a wonderful salad just to keep it healthy. The Ladder Game tournament was won by Pat Wolter and Ron Waterman and the sand dollar finalist were announced. The “100 Things” photo scavenger hunt went right down to the wire with two teams finding 99 items. Who knew the candy store would be out of Black Jack gum? The tie breaker was the license plate from farthest away and I’ll be darned if Heidi and Duane Petrowsky didn’t find a Yukon Territories’ motorcycle plate so the Wolter/Hammill team was second.
We danced a bit to the calling of Joe Lewis, circa 1960, on an old vinyl record. The dancers spent most of their time trying to keep up and keep from laughing so hard they couldn’t dance. In the kitchen we had the “Bling Fling” setup for all the new Hoedowner gear.
What a wonderful, relaxed getaway that allowed everyone a chance to build friendships, goof off, nap and make memories.
Yvonne Clendenin had hip surgery on April 25th and Daryl reports she’s on the mend!
June 10th is our annual Strawberry Dance, a celebration of all that is Oregon strawberries. It should be peak season and all the California strawberries better stay away!
It's that time of year again. Our election brought some new candidates for the board. Dan Knierim will continue as president, Patty Bonney remains as vice president, and Lindie Noonan stays on as treasurer.
The changes are Sue Naven taking over as secretary, and Robin Faltersack as our new member-at-large, who will also be our TVC delegate. Rick Faltersack will be our other TVC delegate. Thanks to all who stepped up to the plate to see us through another year.
April 14th, a dance to remember! It was R Square D’s 64th ANNIVERSARY DANCE, and what a dance it was. We definitely had a full house. Many clubs were represented; Hoedowners, Hayshakers, Cougar Squares, Eager Beavers, Harbor Haylofters, Salty Sashayers, Ruff and Ruffles, Columbia River Dancers, Happy Hoppers, Prairie Steppers, Toe Draggers and our own R Square D. The floor was full with as many as 8 squares on it most of the night. The Catlin hall was all decorated up, Anniversary cake and ice cream was served at break time. Thanks to all who came to help us celebrate the many years of the fellowship of dance.
April 17th we had our Club meeting, hosted by John and Chris Poole. Thank you John and Chris.
R square D went dark for the dance on the 22nd, as many of our dancers headed east to enjoy a great weekend in Moxee for the Spring Sashay. There were 17 squares attending. One of those squares was R Square D!!

Hope your dancing days have been filled with fun, new friends and making memories with our wonderful square dance world. The Toes have been doing that. Our Easter Bonnet and Ducky Dances were full of great surprises and so much fun. There’s never a dull moment around the Kinton Grange. KC and Linda led us on our Mystery Trip with visiting Fort Vancouver with a dance or two on the grounds. Then we toured the facilities, learning lots about the early history of the area. We were then guided to the Hazel Dell Grange. Linda prepared yummy taco salads for us at the hall with a game or two of bunco before the dance started. She has the best ideas for a fun time. We ended the evening dancing with the Columbia River Dancers. A great evening, it was!!!! Then for another surprise for the Toes was a quick visit from Bev and Harlan Flint to say hello after their surgeries and showing us they are both making great recoveries.
June has been busy for the club. New officers have been elected. Dan Damon President, Loretta Flint/Kathy Roberts splitting the Vice Pres. job, Pat Olson Secretary, Bruce Plunkett Treasurer, and Diana and Tom Gray taking the TVC delegate jobs for another year. Thanks to all of you for helping our club create another year of great square dancing. They will be taking office in early June.
June 2nd is our Sadie Hawkins Dance with an ice cream social. I love to see the costumes everyone comes dressed in to square dance. It sure brings smiles and good memories. June 16th is our regular dance. Both of these dances will be helping us to bring in summer with a bang.
We are hoping to see you all at our July 7th dance helping us to celebrate KC’s birthday. Join us before the dance for our famous BBQ and pot luck dinner. Then we’ll be getting ready to dance with KC and the Wildcards on July 13th for the Trails End Dance down in Salem to start off Summer Festival. There is always something to look forward to with square dancing.

Spring has brought beautiful weather here to the Umpqua Valley! Spring has also brought elections to many clubs around Oregon. As new members step up to help with leadership roles, it is important to remember those who came before. Our clubs could not continue without people who are willing to spend their most valuable resource of all, time. I know there are clubs that often have to beg for someone to step up, but this year at the Buckeroos Barn we were lucky enough to have two members who want to lead as our president. We will be welcoming Bruce Knotts as our president in the coming weeks.
I want to give a personal THANK YOU to Doris Koozer who has been our fearless leader for past four years. She has spent countless hours helping to get our club on solid ground. Under her leadership, membership has increased and national callers are again making their way to the Buckeroo Barn. In my humble opinion, the Buckeroo Barn is one of the best dance halls in the state. If you have not joined us for a dance recently, you should!
Our annual Buckeroo Round Up is June 9-11, 2017. The Buckeroo Round Up is a great event and a fun way to start off the summer festival season. This year we have Dan Nordbye calling and Mary Ann Callahan cuing. As part of the Buckeroo Round Up this year, we will also be having a benefit dance at the Wildlife Safari. Check out our website or the flyers and then plan to join us!
Our regular dances are on the first and third Saturdays of each month. We have recently installed two swamp coolers to keep us dancing all summer long! We would love to see in a square!
Happy dancing,
Robin Faltersack
