Oregon Federation News
July 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 July 2017
President's Corner

Two and one half months left in my term as your Federation President. It has gone by quickly but a lot has happened in that time. We lost Ron’s brother and then his wife six weeks later. My mom has been hospitalized and just back to her assisted living facility.

My travel plans to make it around the Federation in my term has been slowed down, but I still intend to visit each council. I have PAC, S. Coast, Central Oregon, and Rogue Sis-Q left to go.

I have been working on the state directory and there are still a few clubs left to report their new officers. All forms are due at Summer Festival. Each directory is $3.25 again this year. You can order yours through your club or council delegate. They will be distributed during the September state meeting.

Are you working on advertising for your fall classes yet? Now is a good time to get your plans all put together and get flyers out to attract new students. You can send me flyers to use for State Fair.

State Fair is also nearing for public dancing. We have four days to dance. Two are definite: Saturday of Labor Day weekend for the youth and two hours also! Monday of Labor Day weekend for those who cannot get time off during the week. Two other dates are still being worked on. One will be dedicated to round dancing. So keep your eyes and ears open for more news.

Guess I will close this for now. Keep dancing and take your recent class graduates with you. They need the floor time.

Marilyn Schmit
President

See YOU at Summer Festival!!!

Publicity

Summer time brings many opportunities to travel around the state, visiting festivals and special dances allowing you the pleasure of renewing old friendships and to make new friends.

Oregon’s Summer Festival in Salem at the Blanchet Catholic School (4373 Market Street NE, Salem) will start their pre-festival kick off on Thursday, July 13th with a free tour of the Oregon’s State Capitol.  Meet at the Blanchet School at 1:00 PM to carpool to the Capitol. The Trail's End Dance that evening will be at the Salem Square Dance Center (3695 45th Avenue NE, Salem) with the Wild Cards. Summer Festival starts on Friday, July 14th with the unique and fun opportunity to dance on the steps of the Capitol (900 Court St. N.E.) from 2:30-4:00 PM with the Crew.  Dancing will resume at the Blanchet Catholic School at 6:00 pm.  This year’s Summer Festival’s featured caller is Johnny Preston and featured cuers are Rey & Sherry Garza.  Many of our own great callers and cuers will also be on the festival program. Check out the program schedule to find out when your favorite callers and cuers will be on the stage.

On Saturday, July 15, in addition to the many dancing opportunities, there will also be a special educational seminar.  JoAnn MacDonald from the Consumer Protection and Financial Fraud section of the Oregon Department of Justice will be leading a seminar on how to recognize and protect yourself against a scam or consumer fraud, and what to do if you suspect a scam or fall victim to a scam.  Please bring your questions and be prepared for a very informative and enlightening session.

Daryl Clendenin will also be leading a sack lunch panel discussion at noon on Saturday to discuss the future of square dancing.

Summer Festival’s two final events will be on Sunday, July 16.  Our Oregon Federation State Meeting will start at 9:30 PM.  We welcome visitors and hope you decide to come and watch the meeting.  The Summer Festival’s Trail's Out Dance will be from 11:00-1:00 PM in the Mainstream Hall with Johnny Preston and Rey & Sherry Garza.

Summer Festival Ribbons are available from committee members, by mail, or at the door.  Hope to see most of you there.  If you have children who could use financial assistance to purchase their ribbons or for a list of the many youth activities that are scheduled for the weekend, please contact the Federation’s Youth Activities Coordinator, Karyn Buchheit (buchheitfarmkm@gmail.com).

Our next scheduled dance isn't until September 30. We have a meeting and dance on the Fifth Saturdays during the year. We are dark July 29th while the floor is being refinished. We look forward to a beautiful floor.

One of our caller members, Gail Jackson, had cancer surgery. Our thoughts and prayers for successful recovery and no more cancer! Gail is our treasurer. She has worked with our bank to make things not only easier but cost-saving as well.

Keep on dancing!

We dance Sundays at 5:30 at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. Hall A in front. Come and join us for some FUN floor time. Check the When and Where for any dark dates. Dark dates for us are few, but they do happen from time to time. We love visitors!

Tim, our capable caller, calls and teaches all levels from beginners through advanced.

We are dark July 23 and 30. The floors will be refinished during the last couple of weeks in July. The smell may be too much for some dancers, and this will give the floor time to dry and be beautiful!

The current board of Spin Cycle Squares was unanimous in their decision to serve another year. Thank you so much. David Lajoie-President, Kurt Jensen-Vice-President, Cheryl Hagey-Secretary, Lorna Mercer-Treasurer and Christina Corelli-Member-at-Large.

Happy Dancing!

It was Alien Days in McMinnville but none visited our dance May 20. We did have, however, visitors from four different clubs, including Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell from the Albany Timber Twirlers. Bruce called a tip and Judy cued a set of rounds for us. We had a fun time thanks to our great caller, Leonard Snodgrass and fantastic cuer, Sandra Pinion.

We will be dark in July and August and in September we will have a new location. Stay tuned so you will know where we are moving. See you in a square, hopefully at Summer Festival in Salem, and happy dancing. Carmen

We had a great dance for Pie Night on Memorial Day; a little over four squares. Thank you to all the visiting dancers.

Some of us visited Chaps and Petticoats for their Salute to Veterans dance. I don’t think that is the name they called it but it was a nice dance to thank all of our Veterans. A couple of us went to the Saturday night dance in Lebanon for the Strawberry Festival for the first time which was very enjoyable.

We are currently running mainstream lessons every Monday night from 6 – 7:30 so we are not having Pre-Rounds on our dance nights. You are welcome to help Angel or make your own square and practice being in the opposite position than what you normally dance. I always have fun trying to do that. We have a few extra door prizes during the weeks of lessons. Please be patient while we try to build up our club and try to help the square dance community also grow. Teija

IWW has a new Board and we are looking forward to a new club year. Thanks to our outgoing President Barbi (Lee) Ashwill and Vice-President Barbara Tipton for their outstanding leadership and for the support and encouragement that they have provided to our other hard-working Board members and club committees. Hats are off to Joni O’Brien, recipient of the “Good Scout Award” for above-and-beyond service.

43 members attended the Koast Krash held at the Yachats Inn the weekend of April 21. The theme was Wizard of Oz and costumes were encouraged. Most of the Oz characters were represented, including a tree and flying monkeys. The Munchkins loved the Wicked Witch’s legs protruding from under the house. We enjoyed games, golf, shopping, hiking, food (highlighted by a taco/nacho bar Saturday evening) and fun. A HUGE thank you goes to organizers Eugene and Bonnie Ivey and George and Patty Hermann.

Roger Putzler was guest caller at our first May dance. Nice to have you back, Roger! We are looking forward to a Demo dance on August 19 at the Polk County Fairgrounds as part of the Solar Eclipse Celebration and hope to have many squares from other clubs come and dance with us. IT WAS A GLORIOUS WEEKEND -- JUNE 1 - 3, 2017 -- LEBANON STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL WEEKEND! Activities began on Thursday evening with a club potluck and float decorating party at Marilyn York's home. The event was highlighted by the presentation of our new float trailer. The trailer frame was donated by John and Wanda Frenzel and then there were many work parties to complete the trailer under the direction and coordination skills of Frank Cawrse and Larry Baker. Nick Heineck, Fred Schafer, John Frenzel, Doris Nelson, Rosalie Weischedel, Bill Fiock, Robb Norman, Wanda Frenzel, and Ben Schmidt helped in the construction and painting of this awesome trailer. Thus the Club was able to participate in the community Strawberry Festival parade as was its custom for over 60 years. There were potlucks on both Friday and Saturday nights prior to the dances. The Friday night Trails End Dance had callers and cuers from the floor. Lots of fun!

On Saturday night Randy Dibble called and Jackie Gale cued. It was a great dance with over 10 squares on the floor. Our Silent Auction was a super success under the direction of Kaynor Heineck, the Experienced Clothing Sale was supervised by Grace Christensen, and the weekend ended with a Sunday morning pancake breakfast. We were delighted to have so many dancers attend our festival weekend.

Our club members will be attending the Pioneer Picnic dance in Brownsville on Father’s Day and during the summer we have a variety of special events to attend. Have a wonderful summer. Marilyn York

The Cha class has eased its way into Rumba dancing and took a week off from class to celebrate our 41st birthday on June 15. We will continue exploring more Latin rhythms for the rest of the summer.

We had a guest cuer in June in the form of Jeanine Norden. We had a great time with her list of dances for us to enjoy. She will be back in the fall for another of Cheryl’s nights off for family time. I think we have another guest cuer coming in July, but have not heard who is coming yet.

We salute Julia Buchheit who came in first with her cueing at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. Julia, along with her family, is part of the Cha/Rumba class we are currently having. Congratulations Julia. We support you in continuing your cueing experiences.

Come join us on Thursdays starting at 6:30. It is always a good time for those who attend. Marilyn Schmit

We are dark this month, but most of our members will be at Summer Festival. We are planning to have our trophies and scrapbook on display. Our youth are also running the concession stand and we will have the new Teen Festival pins for next year on sale - please stop by and say hello and buy a pin from us. The pin will also act as your ticket/ribbon/entrance to next year's Teen Festival here in Oregon.

Mom (Karyn Buchheit) is still waiting for a definite answer from Silverton High School. Right now she is planning on that as the location for the Teen Festival. We will keep people updated as we find out more information. She will also need LOTS of volunteers - you can send her an email or give her a call to let her know if you can help and if you have a preference for where you would like to help.

Thomas Buchheit started a mainstream class on June 11. More info on how it is going next month. We are planning to have a trailer in the Homer Davenport Parade the first Saturday in August. If we are lucky, there will be some new dancers from Thomas' class to join us! Petrina Buchheit

At Willamette Squares' dance over Memorial Day weekend, we honored the veterans who were present with special recognition. They came forward and indicated in which branch of the military they served and were awarded a special flag pin as a token of thanks for their service.

Sandy Harris, our caller, and Jackie Gale, our cuer, were decked out in red, white, and blue, and the decorations were red, white, and blue as well. Many of the singing calls were of a patriotic theme, and they put everyone in a festive, thoughtful mood. As usual, there was an ample supply of food; everyone ate their fill, and there was still food left over.

Willamette Squares is looking forward to the upcoming Summer Festival by participating as dancers or volunteering. We are also preparing for square and round dance lessons coming up in the fall. Jodee Howard

It’s not too late to attend our 5th Friday dance June 30. Take a peek at our flyer!

I’m always intrigued by what happens in July. We all know there are too many clubs for the number of dancers we have. Starting in July, we become aware of which clubs are going to fold, which are going to merge (to combine talent) and which are going to become “traveling clubs”. It will be interesting to see how it all percolates out. One very good thing about losing clubs is that our talent is not so diluted.

Your club’s ability to have fund raisers is also an important ingredient both for your treasury and attracting new members. Most non-profits have to have fund raisers. It’s sad our Chaps and Petticoats have to sacrifice the summer festival for their fund raiser, but we know how necessary fund raisers are. It’s sort of like a public safety officer who has to work Christmas.

Your club’s ability to survive any consolidation of clubs will depend on how innovative and flexible it can be to attract new members and incorporate new ideas. This will make for a strong club, and only the strong shall survive.

Although there is no evidence theme dances do anything to increase attendance, they can still be a lot of fun for the members. We’ll have a Crazy T-Shirt dance July 19th. So, wear your T-Shirt, or come overdressed to our dance.

Ever popular Les Seeley will be with us July 19. Come join us for our legendary caller.

We now have two plus tips after break, and our dance donation is now $6. Our bookkeeper, Debbie Debit, says the plus tips cost more money.

Greetings from the Buzzin' Bees. Our club had its final dance of the season on June 3rd with a red, white and blue theme. A great time was had by all. We are dark now until September but we have several Club activities planned including a picnic at our former callers house in July and a campout in August. Bill and Linda Lundin will host the picnic and we'll be camping out with our former cuer, Debbie and Mike Combs.

We hope you have a great summer and keep on dancing.

Country Cut-Ups - Link
The Country Cut-Ups will start off July with a picnic open to the public on July 1st. Jim Hattrick will be calling and will introduce square dancing to any interested visitors ahead of our usual dance. We will be selling sausages with coleslaw and beans with other side dishes for the picnic. Picnic is at 5:30 PM, Plus starts at 7:00 PM, and Mainstream at 7:30 PM. Come and join us for the fun!

On Sunday, July 9th, from 2 to 4:30 PM, we are having a B51 level dance to encourage our current mainstream class and any recent graduates in the area to get some floor time. Scott Zinser will be calling.

We will be having demonstrations or showing up at community events throughout the summer in order to promote our upcoming Mainstream lessons, starting September 14th. Our lessons are on Thursdays with Scott Zinser, 7:30 to 9:30 PM.

We will close out July with a 5th Saturday all Plus level dance on the 29th. We will have a Beach Party theme and dance to oldies, casual dress. George and Patty Hermann will be calling and cueing. Hope to see you there!

Happy Hoppers - Link
Summer is here and that means the Happy Hoppers will be dark for 2 months. July & August we close our doors and enjoy all the fun festivals and dances of the summer. Our only summer event is our annual picnic & BBQ on Aug 6th. This is an event for all our members and is always a popular get together, not to mention yummy food!

We celebrated our 58th anniversary in May with a wonderful Fiesta dance, and are looking forward to starting our 59th season on Sept 2nd. If you’re in the area on Labor Day weekend, please come join us.

We will have a new dance format this coming fall with Pre-rounds at 7PM and Plus from 7:30-9:45. We’ll have refreshments and announcements at 9:45. We welcome visitors at all our dances and hope you’ll make plans to join us.

Wow!! Can't believe it's summer already. June saw our January class graduate. Small class, but very enthusiastic new dancers. Fun dances in June with Ray and guest cuers Bob Dingman and Elaine Funk. Dances were small, but again, as long as everyone is smiling and having fun...that is the most important part of dancing. The Charlie's also participated in the Frog O’Faire with 2 squares putting on a fun demo. Thanks to Chuck for calling the demo and bringing some of his students as well.

We only have 1 dance left before we go dark in August. July 1st we will have Ray calling and Sarge cueing our Firecracker Dance. It's an all skate and will also be Ray's last official dance as our caller. I hope we get a good turn out to wish him well. He is staying in the area, so I am sure we will see him once in awhile.

We are dark for our July 15th dance, so everyone can attend Summer Festival in Salem. It's a great event with National Caller Johnny Preston and cuers Ray and Sherry Garza. Hope to see lots of Southern Oregon dancers there.

Boatnik weekend was just wonderful. Hunter Keller and Randy Lewis were fabulous and we all had a great time!! Enjoyed a trip on the jet boat Monday and we were so glad to have Hunter, Randy and Debbie stay an extra day to enjoy that with us. Our wheels are already turning with ideas for Boatnik 2018 with Tony Oxendine and Sharon Parker!! Can't wait.

Look forward to seeing everyone on the dance floor soon!

May was a very good month. In addition to our two regular dances the club was proud to help our Secretary, Melissa James, celebrate being cancer-free for 10 years. There were some who came to celebrate with Melissa who were not dancers. That did not slow things down. Jim called some tips in mainstream, taught some round dance steps, as well as a line dance routine. He put new dancers in squares with many angels and everyone had a great time. We all were just there to let her know that square dancers care. Money was collected for cancer research, but the exact amount is not known at this time.

Our beginning square dance lessons will go through the summer, with beginners from 7:00 to 8:30 and mainstream from 8:30 to 9:00 PM. So, if you are finished with beginners or want to keep sharp with mainstream and your clubs goes dark in the summer, you are welcome to our lessons on Tuesday evenings at the Hazel Dell Grange. And if you have friends that you can bring, we start a new cycle of lessons on the first Tuesday of each month.

We dance Saturdays, 7-8 Plus 8-10 Mainstream, year round at Hazel Dell Grange, 7509 NE Hazel Dell Ave., Vancouver, WA 98665. Our July 8th caller will be Mike Stout with Julie Stout cueing, and on July 22nd Jim Hattrick is calling and cueing. Come join us for a good time.

Eager Beavers - Link
Dave Pebworth as MC led the installation of our officers for 2017-2018. Our dedicated board is as follows: Chief Dam Builders - Karen and Ferrous Steinka; Assistant Dam Builders - Sally and Mike Duyck; Log Thumper - Judy Martin; Gnawer - Marie Clem ; TVC representatives - Ken Marifke, and for her 2nd year - Kay Rogers.

Eighteen TVC dancers including Six Eager Beavers attended the Apple Blossom Festival in Leavenworth Washington and reported they enjoyed an excellent dance weekend.

Our Plus students graduated and have done very well. I think they can now go to any Plus Dance and hold their own with the “old timers” who “Never” make mistakes. If you believe that last one I will sell you beach front property in Arizona.

Call Kay Rogers if you are interested in attending our Seaside Beach trip October 4th - 6th, at 503-396-5537 (some people may have to put a “1” in front of the number). She has all the answers.

We are planning ahead so our Anniversary Dance does not conflict with Hillsboro’s Street Fair Event next year. Our dance will be the third Sunday, April 15, 2018. Now you can plan ahead.

NOTE: We will dance at the Aloha Grange on the following Mondays: June 26th and July 3rd (our Independence Day Dance) as the church will be unavailable.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

May I say May didn’t stay long enough. Maybe it was the Hippy Dance on the 13th that got my internal calendar askew. It was amazing comparing everyone’s recollections of just what those days were like; is it Hippy or Hippie? psychedelic light shows, mustaches, VW vans, rainbows, bell bottoms, long hair, peace, love and rock and roll, headbands, tie dye, the Doors, big hoop earrings, flowers in your hair, boots, flowy skirts, Jimi Hendrix, summer of love . Hmmm, not much of that music really works for square dancing but Daryl stepped up to the challenge and found a few. Hey folks, Sergeant Peppers Lonely Heart’s Club Band album is 50 years young, it still sounds great and was just re-released! Wow! The walls were decorated with peace symbols and daisies, dancers were decorated with flowers, headbands and peace symbols. It was groovy as they say.

The Red, White and Blue Dance had some surprises. Everyone had fun, dancing was great and Hoedowners had their first experience with the Hoedowner Spinnin’ and Winnin’ Wheel. Wayne and Darlene outdid themselves this time.

July will see a Luau Dance on the 8th. I can smell the pikake now. Then, on July 22nd will be Floatin’ Away on a fine summer’s evening. Come and enjoy our root beer floats and summer music. You can bring your own tube or air mattress if you like.

As the weather transitions almost overnight from cool and wet to hot and dry, it's time to mention again to keep an eye on our web page. Besides mentioning that we will go dark July 15th for Midsummer Festival, we will post the information if the heat makes us cancel.

We hope that our usual summer refreshments, the traditional Red, White, and Blue dance with Dan's homemade ice cream, trimmed with berries, both red and blue, the Root Beer Float Dance, and the cooling watermelon dance will help us through the summer months. Those will be served in the grange's basement, which usually manages to stay cooler even during the hot spells.

Also, don't forget that our summer dances are casual, as are any others when the thermometer passes what is tolerable.

On Friday May 12th R Square D hosted a Fiesta de Mayo Dance. Tacos and all the fixin's were served before the dance. Craig and Lonnie used Mexican music to keep our feet tapping through out the evening. Cougar Squares went home with one of our travelling banners, because our President did not have the Cougars banner that we had recently taken.

The club was dark on the 4th Saturday in observance of Memorial Day. We hope that everyone had a good weekend and enjoyed the lovely weather that we were blessed with.

In July we will dance on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. On the 12th we will be serving Ice Cream Sundaes and will have a guest caller. On the 26th we will serve Root Beer floats and Mike Stout will be calling. All summer dances are casual.

It is not too early to get Octoberfest ribbons, ask any member of the club, we can direct you to where to purchase them. Club members have been working with members of the Rose Valley Grange to improve the acoustics in the hall.

Our special cuer Bev Flint and her husband Harlan are back cueing again. We have missed them so much. We wanted to thank Connie Clark for helping Bev out on her first attempt back to cue after surgery. They fired up the hall for our Cinco de Mayo dance, at the first of the month. We have been out visiting other clubs as a group and couples. The Tualatin Timber Squares gave us a fun night for one of our visitations. Thanks for sharing all of your energy and enthusiasm. We had a great group from River City Dancers for our Sadie Hawkins dance. They helped us fill the floor with fun and energy too. The ice cream social was a smashing success.

June 16th is our regular dance, following up on July 7th with a BBQ and pot luck before the dance to help us celebrate KC’s birthday. That will be a night of surprises. Come and join us. July 21st is our regular dance and remember casual clothes are welcomed during the summer months.

We are looking forward to our Progressive Mystery Dinner. We are coming dressed as the Romans did, eating great food, being with friends and trying to solve a murder mystery. Should be a great evening. Come join us for a dance or two. We love visitors coming to help us dance the night away. See you in a square.

Tri Squares - Link
In May Tri Squares visited the Braids and Braves out in the beautiful wine country at the McMinnville Grange and we were sad to learn they have to relocate in the fall. Also in May we elected new officers: President Linda Brabham, Vice President Deb Mandeville, Secretary Gloria Davis, Treasurer Bob Davis, Dance Coordinator Lynnea Loveberg, and TVC Representative Frank Collett.

On June 16th we plan to visit the Chaps and Petticoats in Aurora, and leading the dance will be our own caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion.

On June 24th we'll have a mystery trip, and as I write this I still don't know where! We'll be carpooling, dancing a tip along the way, eating out, and surprising another club at their dance -- always so much fun.

We'll go dark again this year for July and August, due to the summer heat. But to keep our club dancing we plan to visit four other clubs with A/C: River City Dancers, Hoedowners, Sunset Promenaders, and the Oaky Doaks. So, along with the Salem Summerfest and the Hahn Barn dance, we'll be very busy.

And a big congratulations to our long-time members, Wallace and Roberta Prowell, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary on June 18th. Wow!

The Tillamook County Fair is coming up in August, and on Thursday, August 10, the Wave Steppers will be doing a square dance, line dance, and clogging demo on the Courtyard Stage in the center of the fairgrounds. This is the second year we’ve done this. Club caller Joe Wrabek will be calling the squares, and line dance coach Gwen Kiel will lead the line dancers and cloggers. Like last year, we’ll have a couple folks in square dance regalia working the crowd, handing out coupons for a new round of square dance classes starting in September.

The Wave Steppers’ July dance, Saturday, July 8th will feature Harvey Hunsucker calling and cueing. Club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel will be doing the club’s County Fair Dance Saturday, August 12th.

The Wave Steppers’ anniversary dance Saturday, September 9th will be an Elvis Dance, with caller Mark Wheeler as Elvis, and cuer Connie Clark.

All the club’s dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall (107 6th Street, at Acacia). About two-thirds of the building’s second floor is a dance floor, built in the 1940s by the Fire Department for the old Firemen’s Balls.

This past weekend the Buckeroo Barn was transformed into a jungle for our annual Buckeroo Round-Up. We had a jam packed weekend with Dan Nordbye calling and Maryann Callahan cuing. We had dances on Friday and Saturday evenings and great “funshops” on Saturday. Dancers came from near and far to join us out on the dance floor.

As part of the Round Up this year, we had a benefit dance for the Wildlife Safari. We danced under the Safari Dome at the Wildlife Safari Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Dan Nordbye called and Maryann Callahan cued in the morning, and then the afternoon was filled with jamboree callers and cuers. We had a wonderful time dancing, seeing the animals, and helping raise money for a good cause.

We hold the Buckaroo Round Up on the second weekend in June, so mark your calendar now and plan to join us next year. In 2018 we will have Scot Byers calling and his lovely wife Erin cuing.

We dance the first and third Saturdays here at the barn. We are an easy drive from almost anywhere along I5, and would love to dance with you at the Buckeroo Barn!
