Oregon Federation News
August 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 August 2017
President's Corner

Wow, the last month has flown by real fast. But then, considering I was gone to national convention for a week and combating a messed up computer since I got home, I can relate.

The convention was fun and there were 22 Oregonians in attendance. I have a list of 19 of them at home that I knew were there and two of them I introduced myself to in the Showcase of Ideas.

We are represented on the Executive Committee of United Square Dancers of America again with the election of Dale and Kathy Worthington to the position of Western Region Vice President. Please wish them well on their travels through the 13 states they represent as they share the vision and goals of the association. Their publication rack will be on display at Mid-Winter and I will try to get mine up for Summer Festival.

Speaking of Summer Festival, as I write this, it is a week away. By the time this prints, it will all be over with and the chairpersons are breathing a sigh of relief that their work is done and just need to finish up last minute things. Congrats on a job well done Neta and Ronda.

I am spending the early parts of August getting the directory proofed and ready to take to the printer. The clubs and councils have been some good and some slow on getting their information submitted. There have been phone calls from Sylvia to some and emails and Facebook private messages from me to others to get information so the directory will be as correct as it can be at the time it is printed. Of course, something will be wrong with it as soon as the ink hits the first page. Just remember to let us know when you get your copy of any corrections that need to be made so the Master Copy can be fixed for the next printing.

See you soon in a square, or a round dance.

Marilyn Schmit
President

Editor's Note

Eric Henerlau gave a great tirring keynote address at the 65th National Square Dance Convention® in June entitled "What's Right With Square Dancing".  I have included a link to his speech in the articles below.

Federation Meeting

The Federation held its quarterly meeting at Summer Festival on July 16.  This was a spirited meeting, with lots of things happening.  There was a good discussion about our background check procedures, although there is more to be said.  We do not have a Summer Festival scheduled beyond 2018, and it is getting harder to find councils willing to put one on.  The Emerald Empire is also finding it hard to find chairmen and volunteers for Mid-Winter.

A parliamentary board meeting is not a good place for round-table discussions.  A suggestion was made that we create a web forum or bulletin board system on the Federation's web page to enable rousing discussions.  That is likely to happen very shortly.  Watch here for more information.

The next Federation meeting will be September 17 at the Kinton Graonge in Beaverton, where we will install our new officers.

Mid-Winter

Start planning for Mid Winter-Festival 2018, January 26, 27 and 28, 2018.

Summer Festival

Oregon's 2018 Summer Festival will be held at the Josephine County Fairgrounds in Grants Pass next July.  Watch here for more details. Download your registration form here.

Corporation Renewal Status

All clubs in the Oregon Federation are required to maintain their status as non-profit corporations with the State of Oregon. The Secretary of State's office mails out a renewal notice about a month before your registration expires every year. The following clubs expire this month:

Late June we had a couple of hot Sunday nights as the air conditioner went down. Apparently, a squirrel had touched a live wire which took out the air conditioning in Hall A. Nonetheless, we had a super group of dancers from the Buckeroos of Roseburg come down to dance with us. Twenty-three dancers! Wow! Laura and Bruce Knotts had made the arrangements. This was their anniversary celebration. Chuck Simpkins, their caller, told Bruce and Laura he and Carla would come up to Springfield if they got at least 16 dancers to commit to come up. There were 23 total. Needless to say, Chuck and Carla came too, and it was so good to see them. Chuck called a tip for us. We are looking for a time for us to visit them down in Roseburg.

In July, Wendy and Alex came to talk to us about square dancing and take some photos of us having the time of our lives. Wendy works for the Eugene Weekly magazine. We look forward to seeing the article and photos. Tim Matteson, our caller, got Wendy and Alex out for a tip of beginning square dancing. With all of those angels, Alex and Wendy did well and had a great time. FUN for sure.. A seed was planted!

We are so grateful for the Emerald Dance Center where there is air conditioning, a cushioned wood floor, built in speakers, a closet, a cupboard and a great kitchen. We've been here a few years now and appreciate all of the work people do for this wonderful venue.

Happy dancing!

Braids and Braves are dark for July and August. Hope you enjoyed the Summer Festival.

When the new dance season begins in September, we'll have a new location for our dances: Palmer Creek Lodge in Dayton. It has wood floors and an elevator. We will still have our dances on the third Saturday of the month beginning September 16 with Leonard Snodgrass calling and Sandra Pinion cueing. A flyer will be coming out soon with directions to the new location.

We are trying something new for our new dancer lessons this year. They will be on Sunday evening beginning September 8 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. They will again be held at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Farm Museum. Carmen

The club is still going strong, although as you probably already know, our beloved instructor of many years, Cheri Posedale, resigned in the Spring. There was some concern as to whether the club would be able to continue and if so what that would look like. Since that time, some of our long time members have rallied to the challenge and began to learn to cue and teach. While they may not have totally perfected the art yet, they are doing a great job and our club has remained strong. We had our annual summer meeting on July 16 and decisions will soon be made as to the future. At this point, we are still planning on offering beginner lessons September through December at the Square Dance Center.

We are now in our demo season and have danced at World Beat, the Marion County Fair, at the Bush Barn Art Fair in July and also the Silverton Art Fair in August. Georganne Phnister

Our club is dark for July and August, but we're happy to see there are a variety of dances up and down the valley, including Summer Festival in Salem where we can dance.

We enjoyed a club potluck in June and have another one planned for August. Then we are looking forward to our fall lessons. We've found that most new dancers have been personally invited by a club member, so we're focusing on that approach and also making business sized cards with lessons information to hand out. We also hope once again to dance a demo at the Corvallis Farmers' Market.

We hope you're enjoying summer in Oregon; some say nothing else can compare! Karen Karplus

The new IWW Board members have taken office and the club year is off to a great start.

We are hoping that by the time you read this news, we will have enjoyed gracious Hoedowner hospitality on a July 8 visitation to the Aloha Grange, will have had a blast dancing on the Capitol steps to The Crew, and will have enjoyed what promises to be a memorable Summer Festival. Kudos to the Summer Festival Committee and the many Summer Festival volunteers.

The Hall will be dark in August for our usual dance times, but IWW will host a demonstration square dance at the Polk County Fairgrounds on August 19 as part of the Total Eclipse Celebration. All dancers are welcome, and urged to come. We hope for a large turnout. Please wear your club outfits and, in honor of the occasion, sunglasses. See the flyer in this OFN issue for details.

Our regular dance schedule resumes on September 2, with George Hermann calling and guest cuers. Mainstream lessons begin September 10, 4-6 pm and Plus lessons begin September 24, 6:15–7:45. George Hermann will be teaching. Happy dancing! Dee and Bert Mackaman

The club celebrated 41 years with fun, friendship, camaraderie, and topped off with cake to celebrate. Thanks to all who came and partied with us.

We are finishing up some Rumba movements and then getting floor time for the rest of the summer. We will be putting together fall plans really soon and getting the flyers out for prospective students and returning students.

We welcomed guests from Utah that had been to Circle 8 Ranch in Cle Elum and were on their way home. It was lovely to have them with us. They are sticking around to attend Summer Festival also. Hope we see them again soon.

Jeanine Norden subbed for Cheryl in June and Christina Corelli will be subbing for Cheryl in July. We were dark for the second Thursday in July due to the Trails In Dance for Summer Festival. Gladly gave our dance night to the Capital Callers and Cuers so they could host the dance.

We also welcomed two new members to the club, Shari and Mark Schonbrun. Welcome aboard! Marilyn Schmit

Thomas' lessons are progressing. He has varied between no students one week to up to 8 another week. It seems to be a little "hit or miss" on attendance due to summer activities for families.

We are planning on dancing in the Homer Davenport Parade in Silverton on Saturday August 5.

We are starting planning for coming back to dancing in September. See you then if not before! Petrina Buchheit

It’s not too late to plan to come and dance with us on July 28 for our “Dance Under the Stars”. It is always a fun dance and you can come early and enjoy the food and festivities of Newberg’s Old Fashioned Festival. Hope to see you in a square soon. Jan Amerson

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares is thankful that its members are currently free from health issues which have not been the case in the past. Our president, John Templin, is back from a seventeen day trip to Cincinnati. He drove with his ninety-six year old mother to Baltimore and Washington D.C. and enjoyed visits with family.

If you attended our most recent square dance, you would have seen dancers sporting favorite baseball caps. The theme was America's greatest pastime of baseball, and what would be a baseball game without crackerjacks! An assortment of balls decorated the tables, and of course, there were plenty of other snacks besides crackerjacks to satisfy our palates. The dancing was lively and fun, the result of a team effort. In baseball terms you might say our dance scored a home run!

Willamette Squares is looking forward to the summer festival where when we aren't filling various volunteer jobs, we will be dancing up a storm, enjoying watching other dancers, and connecting with friends! We are also preparing for square and round dance lessons in the fall. Jodee Howard

There’s a sign in the Boring Barn about three types of people (1) Those that make things happen (2) Those that watch things happen and (3) Those that wonder what happened. I confess I usually fall into the last category.

On the other end of our council (from the Barn) is the Silver Stars. Here is a club that at one time was so big it even had its own weekend dance festival as a fund raiser. Eventually, over a period of time, the festival went away, the door prize tickets went away, the food went away and the dance nights went away. Now they will only dance once a year. According to the Federation, they have 19 members. What happened? I don’t know.

Contrast this with the Tumbleweeds, in the middle of our council. They also have 19 members, dance each week and have one of the finest weekly lunches you’ll find anywhere. What’s the difference? I don’t know. What happened? I don’t know. Maybe you can let me know at semichasse@gmail.com

One thing for sure: it is good there is a council so that ideas can be shared on what works and what doesn’t. We can all learn new things.

It will be another crowded night for us, Aug 9, as Mike Sikorsky once again graces us with his presence. Come early so you have a good place to park. Parking patrol supervisor Bruce Bruiser will be making sure you don’t park where you don’t belong. Or, have your parking done by our friendly valet, Parker Parkit. This will be our luau dance, so I’ll be there with a skimpy short skirt made of grass – like Mike Sikorsky, only he doesn’t have the legs for it.

The Back to School dance will be Aug 30. Come join Mike Kious and Tami Helms, and don’t forget the school supplies, pretty please.

Our new kitchen chef, Cal Amari, says he will be serving surprise treats at all our dances this month.

We’re going to borrow an idea from our Country Cut-Up neighbors. We, too, are going to have an open house. Ours will be each Wednesday in August, 7:00 --7:30, with basic square lessons in September.

Who can believe that I am already writing about August? We have had a quiet summer as a club but August will start the ramp-up. Our caller, K C Curtis, will be doing square dance lessons at Lakeshore Athletic Club in Vancouver every Friday. The address for Lakeshore Athletic is 2401 NW 94th Street, Vancouver. The class starts at 11 and goes until 12:30. Angels are welcome.

The Bees summer camp out is coming up August 11th and 12th at Silver Springs State Park. Mike and Debbie Combs are camp host at that Park so we will be visiting them. Last year, a good time was had by all.

Lessons will start in September - more information next month. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

If this reaches you before the last of July, make sure to hit our 5th Saturday all Plus dance at the Boring Barn. We have making our 5th Saturday dances a special event, so don’t miss this Surf’s Up beach theme with oldies music. Our 5th Saturday dances are $6 at the door and starting September 1st, all of our dances will be $6.00 per dancer. Most clubs have already gone there, and this year’s insurance bill on the Barn rose enough to send us down that path also.

We will participate in the Boring and Dull Day again this year, serving ice cream. It is August 9th from 5 to 9 PM at the trail head park. Come out for a sweet treat to beat the hot weather. It is a chance for our club to get our name out in the community and tell them about our fall lessons coming up.

Our current mainstream class will be finishing up as this comes out and we will take the month of August off and then start some new lessons September 14th. Scott Zinser will be teaching every Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. Let everyone know about this great activity!

Come and dance with us on 1st and 4th Saturdays, 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM. We start with the first half hour of Plus level, then dance mainstream with intermediate rounds. We look forward to the cooler August nights. Come join us as it is always fun to dance with the Cut-Ups!

Happy Hoppers - Link
Happy Hoppers may be dark for the summer but we have lots going on!

At the PAC Dance Fri June 29th, we had several members in attendance and even won the drawing for stealing the PAC banner. You can look for it hanging at our September dances until we return it to the Tri-Council dance Sept 30.

The next night, July 1st, we had a joint visitation with the Columbia River Dancers to the Country Cut-Ups at the Boring Barn for their Picnic BBQ. I’ve lost count of how many of us were there but it was at least 2 squares. And we brought back on of our banners. This club visitation thing is sure fun!

We are looking forward to our Annual Club BBQ Picnic on August 6th. We get to see old friends and make some new ones while enjoying yummy food and fellowship.

Our new dance format this fall will kick off on Sept 2nd. We will dance our Pre-rounds from 7-7:30 and dance Plus from 8-9:45. Then we’ll do refreshments and announcements. Be sure to come join us as we swing back into dance season. We welcome visitors at all our dances and hope to see YOU there!

Oaky Doaks - Link
The Oaky Doaks were busy with many events in July. On July 1st, we gathered together to celebrate America’s 241st birthday with a cookout and dance. Club President Eugene Ivy cooked up the hamburgers and hotdogs while the rest of the board members did the kitchen duties for guests and members. After enjoying the meal, we squared up to Caller Mark Wheeler and Cuer Molly Combs for some fine after dinner dancing.

As any club knows, fundraising is an important function to being able to stay operational. Several members of the Oaky Doaks were involved with one of our annual fundraising events over the Fourth of July weekend by working at a fireworks stand. Another one of our annual fundraising events, the Oaky Doaks Yard Sale, will be happening the weekend of August 11th to the 13th. Watch for a flier with more information on this.

We were dark the third Saturday in July because someone had come up with the Capitol Idea of the Summer Festival that weekend. So, several of us headed to Salem to enjoy all the activities, callers, cuers, and fellowship that it had to offer.

We rounded out the month with our annual club picnic at Hillendale Park in Oregon City on the 22nd and on the 25th with a pot luck / cookout / club meeting. It was here we had the Passing of the Torch of leadership to our new board members:

President – Keith Miles, First Vice President – Connie Rodgers, Second Vice President – Angie Clark, Secretary – Cheryl Hoke,

Treasurer – Chris Suran and Member at Large – Teresa Morgan.

For the first dance in August, it will be our Thorns and a Rose Dance. This will be a special one-night only, trio dance with Callers George Herman, KC Curtis and Darrell Kalmbach and Cuer Patter Herman. Pre-rounds start at 7:00 with Mainstream going from 7:30 to 10:00. A plus tip may be done prior to going down for the 9:00 break.

On August 19th Caller Mark Wheeler will be back along with Cuer Molly Combs to lead us in square and round dancing with Pre-rounds starting at 7:00 and Mainstream going from 7:30 to 10:00. A plus tip may be done prior to going down for the 9:00 break.

Don’t forget about the Oaky Doaks Yard Sale in August as well.

Hope to see you across the square soon.

We have been using guest callers since Les Seeley moved to Arizona. Each of these callers are candidates for the position of permanent club caller. They are doing an outstanding job of calling and we have been enjoying dancing with each of them. We hope to make our selection of a club caller by November. From what I have seen of the candidates we can not help but end up with a wonderful caller . We love them all !!

Our club is going dark July 15 for our club visitation to summer festival . August 12 Les Seeley will be back to call a dance for us , and August 19 our guest caller will be Darrell Kalmbach.

We have been having club visitations to other clubs each month and have a nice collection of banners from other clubs. We have banners from Tumbleweeds, Chaps and Petticoats, Valley Squares, R Square D, and Hoedowners as well as Charlie Brown. We dance all summer and welcome all dancers. We love having company so come dance with us .

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Well, summer is finally here. BIG TIME!! We must remember these sunny days this winter when it is raining and the snow is falling and everyone wishes for more sunshine. We are in a place where there are 4 seasons. Thank GOD.

The Council's "Fountain of Youth Dance" was a success. Chuck Simpkins did his usual job of keeping the dancers having a great time. We had a nice treat — Rikki Lobato was on hand to cue rounds for us. Great Job — Both of You.

The Council Dance on September 30 will be in Grants Pass at the Fruitdale Grange — see the flyer for the address. The dance will be called by Scott Zinser and cued by Elaine Funk. Come on out and join us in a lot of fun and good dancing. This dance will be good for your newer dancers.

Don't forget to support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley.

The next Council meeting will be August 7, 2017 at Denny's Restaurant on Biddle Road at 4:30pm.

There are still "Learn to Square Dance" t-shirts available. I have quite a few 2X's. We have found the t-shirts are a great conversation starter.

The Charlie’s will be dark thru August for the County Fair. On Tuesday, September 5th we will be having a Dust The Rust Off workshop to help our Angels get ready for new classes starting the following week on September 12th. Chuck Simpkins will be teaching our new beginner’s class starting in September. We are actively recruiting new dancers, so we hope to get a good size class and plenty of Angels to help out!! We will not be having any club dances until Oct 7th. We are dark for both Labor Day and Circle N Squares birthday dance in September. Since we no longer have a club caller, we are going to be contracting guest callers for our dances on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of each month. We will have Michael Kious & Rikki Lobato calling & cueing our first dance back on Oct 7th & on Oct 21st we will have Scot & Erin Byars as our guests!!! Keep an eye out for our other guest callers – we’ve got a good lineup started and are very excited about who will be visiting Grants Pass!!!!

We only had 1 dance during the month of July – it was a small dance, but it was Ray Holmes’s last official dance for us and those that were able to make it wished him well!! The Charlie’s would like to wish Ray the best on his new adventure and extend our thanks for his last 2 years of calling and teaching for the Charlie Brown Squares!!

We hope to see everyone in a square soon. Lots of our club members travel, so although we are “dark” for a couple months – we are still around!! We will be celebrating our 50th birthday on Dec 2nd and have a wonderful guest caller Charlie Robertson from the LA area as well as cuer Steve Murphy from Klamath Falls. Mark your calendars now!!

With the upcoming retirement of Caller, Ray Holmes, the Rogue Squares decided in March to go to one dance a month with guest callers. The club is dancing on the 3rd Friday of the month.

The format of the Rogue Squares dances is: 6:30 to 7:30 — Advanced, 7:30 to 8:00 — Pre Rounds, 8:00 to 10:00 — Mainstream with every 3 rd tip Plus. The club felt this format would give all the dancers an opportunity to dance to the out of town or guest callers.

The Rogue Squares will be starting a beginner class on September 11 with a new and up-coming caller by the name of Phil Ramey. He is not new to square dancing, but he is new to calling. He is also extremely excited about teaching the class. He feels teaching will help him learn to call better as well as teaching new people square dancing.

The schedule of dances is as follows:

July — Club will be dark because the 3rd Friday is in the middle of the Star Promenaders' Diamond Lake Festival

August — on the 5th, Rogue Squares will celebrate their 2nd Birthday with Jim Steele from Bend calling and Mary Nutt cueing

On August 18 will be our "Raid the Garden" dance with Craig Abercrombie from Portland area calling and Elaine Funk cueing.

There is no one scheduled as yet for September and October.

November 17 will be our "Salute our Veterans" dance with Richard Lane calling and Elaine Funk cueing.

December 15 will be our Christmas Potluck & White Elephant Gift Exchange. The caller will be Wayne Weaver and Rikki Lobato will be the cuer.

Ken Pratt will be the Cuer MC. Round dancers will enjoy Phase II through VI cueing. Cuers from the floor will be welcomed to participate, time permitting. The dance begins at 7:30 and continues until 10:00 PM. For additional information please contact Kathy Roberts, (503) 590-4187, kathy@4roberts.us.

Our next Council event will be our annual Hahn Farm Potluck and Dance on Sunday, August 27th. Potluck by the lake begins at 5:30 followed by dancing in the barn from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. This year our caller is Janienne Alexander with Mark McDonald from Central OR cueing. In case of high temperatures, we will still hold the dance unless it is over 90 degrees that day, then check the Oregon Federation Facebook or the TVC website for our decision on whether or not we will hold the dance. Last year, it was about 85 degrees when we started the picnic. We kept cool at the pond where there was a nice cool breeze and everyone was comfortable. By the time we went to the barn to dance, the temperature had dropped lower and it was quite pleasant.

Columbia River Dancers continue dancing at the Hazel Dell Grange in Vancouver on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays year-round with Jim Hattrick calling most of our 4th Saturday dances with guest callers on the 2nd Saturday. We start at 7 pm with Plus and rounds till 8 pm, them Mainstream from 8-10 pm or so. We have our break at the end of the dance. We only go dark for certain festivals and when holidays coincide with our dance night. These will be announced in advance.

Square Dance lessons continue year-round on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm as well. Jim Hattrick teaches on a 4-week rotation schedule. New students may start on the first Tuesday of any month. We generally have 4-5 squares of students and angels on the floor learning and having fun. We only cancel lessons if the temperature is above 90°F in Vancouver at 5 PM. So check the radio or TV for the local temperature.

We have picked up 7-8 new members from lessons in the last 2-3 months - all ladies! (or right-hand-partners, if you desire). Dale (our President) said that he would offer a $5.00 bounty on any new male students that anyone brings to lessons that stay through basic and $20 if they make it through Mainstream!

BIG NEWS! A Guinness World Record was broken by square dancers at Nationals in Cincinnati, OH. Five Eager Beavers with seventeen other Oregon dancers participated in breaking the record for the greatest number of people dancing at one time. Dancers had to go through turnstiles to be counted. The earlier record was just over 1,000 but this one was close to 1,600. There were judges on each of the four floors watching that everyone was dancing at a set time. Everyone had a grand time and the River City Riders were a big hit.

Noble Woods Park is the site for our annual potluck picnic August 2nd at 3:00. You can bring a friend.

On Memorial Day we thanked our members who are veterans - all thirteen of them.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

We have been able to keep four new people coming faithfully for every dance. Also, the new members from Wave Steppers have come to dance with us which really helps everyone. We thank them. Right now we are dancing the 1st and 3rd Saturday’s from 6 to 8. This will probably change in the fall so you need to call before you come and visit.

You need to be thinking about the Seaside Sashay which will be coming October 27th and 28th. We would like to see you come and enjoy the dancing. Our callers this year are Dan Preedy with Darrell Kalmbach and of course our cuer, Debbie Taylor.

Hoedowners - Link
The sixth month of the year has come and gone but the Hoedowners took the opportunity to celebrate the great outdoors at both dances held in June. The dining room was redolent with the sweet smell of freshly sliced strawberries on June 10th when we celebrated Oregon’s best with fruit fresh from the fields. Don’t you love making your own strawberry short cake; as much whipped cream as you like and can anything match a Hood strawberry in June?

On the 24th we held our first ever Camp Hoedowner Dance and it was a great success. It was scorching hot but Aloha Grange remained cool and comfortable all evening. A multitude of bears lurked, a campfire burned, and tree stumps and tents were visible. The question of the evening was, “Did you go away to camp for a week or camp out with friends and family in tents?” A genius named Debbie Olson decided we should have S’mores as part of our camp experience and everyone loved toasting their own marshmallows and hoping the chocolate melted. It was a first S’more for some and there was quite a line at the S’more toasting table and the majority went back for seconds!

August 12th will be the Hoedowner’s Here’s the Scoop Dance with ice cream sundaes. We love enjoying summer, its heat and the excuse for an obligatory summer treat.

August 26th, we’ll hold our Cool & Sweet Dance with melons and fruit. Occasionally you have to plan a healthier menu. Join us to dance with some cool and sweet dancers.

As I write this, the weather forecasts are for two days of upper 90s, although those aren't our dance nights. We hope for more moderate temperatures for our summer dances, weather suitable for our root beer float and watermelon dances. The weather cooperated for our Red, White, and Blue dance with Dan's superb ice cream. It always helps to retreat to the basement to enjoy the refreshing cold treats. We hope that thermometer will cooperate for the rest of the summer.

It's always fun to welcome people back from Arizona after our unusually moist winter turns rapidly to spring and on to summer. Even the most ardent sun lovers decide that 119 degrees isn't their favorite comfort zone. Of course, what makes our dances really great is our delightful duo, Randy Dibble with his lively calling and Jeanine Norden's excellent cuing. Check out our dances for top-rated fun.

R Square D - Link
A memorial luncheon was held at the Canterbury Inn for long time member of R square D club, Joyce Cole. She was 92. Her husband, Harley Cole, had been a long time caller for the club. Several square dancers that attended shared many fond memories of her. Joyce was a very active member of the club until the recent years, she was know for her silliness, giggles, her bag lady antics along with her “Kool aide” jug for special events at our club. Her favorite ribbon was using toilet paper for decorating new RV's and also dressing up callers. She will be missed by all of us.

We had three squares for our strawberry dance at our Wednesday night dance; it was also a celebration for our high school graduate, Kindra Hammers.

Dick and Sandy Sims represented our club at the state festival in Spokane; they spent several days taking in all the activities.

Our Monthly meeting was held at Ron and Lynn Waleizers back yard, a short meeting in a beautiful evening setting.

June 28th, Wednesday night dance was “take me out to the ball game” theme with Polish sausage served at break. Our caller, Craig, being a baseball fan was pleased with the theme and kept 4 squares moving on the floor.

August 9th will be our Hawaiian Dance, remember to dress casually. And, on the 23rd we have our Back to School dance, also casual. Please bring school supplies for those less fortunate in our community. Come dance with us.

For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

The Sunset Promenaders went on a Mystery Trip on Saturday, June 24th and it was a special the fun time enjoyed by all. Fun and games were the main order of business as about 40 dancers boarded the bus headed for a club in the vast unknown. We had Callers Dan Nordbye and Mark Wheeler aboard and Cuer Ken Pratt just in case we found a place to dance along the way (we did!). Games beginning with guess where we are going, what club will we dance with and how many miles will we travel were prevalent throughout the afternoon and evening hours. Many thought we were headed south, but a few had the direction right by guessing clubs in Washington. The team of Julie Stiers and Judy Schnase had it all planned out and even did a couple of "stand-up" routines that had everyone laughing or groaning. They did a great job of planning, except no one planned on the momentous traffic delays through Portland and on I-5 through Washington. Who knew they would be doing road construction on a 100 degree Saturday afternoon. The delays gave us all time to enjoy the scenery as we slowly passed through and time for some bus bingo. Luckily there were plenty of snacks and even a sandwich lunch so we would have the energy to dance when we finally arrived at our destination more than 6 hours after we boarded the bus. We ended up in Kirkland, Washington where the Samena Squares greeted us as we got off the bus then treated us to a wonderful dinner before we started dancing. We thank all who helped plan the trip and joined us on the bus, we were evenly divided with club members and friends of Sunset Promenaders. All in All, an air conditioned bus full of dancing friends is a pretty nice place to be on a 100 degree day!

In August we have two Mainstream dances and three Plus dances planned; Mainstream dates are the 5th, and 19th, and the Plus are the 3rd, 17th, and 31st. The callers are Mike Stout for Mainstream, Darrell Kalmbach for Plus, for Round dance cueing we have Ken Pratt. Come visit us in our air-conditioned hall in Hillsboro. The one element of square dancing that I love, with the Toes during the summer, is casual clothes are welcomed for dancing. What a busy summer for our club. Bev is cueing up a storm for us and we are thankful. KC and Linda were gone to the Washington State Summer Festival in June, calling and entertaining many happy dancers, while George Hermann came to help us out for a dance, in their absence. Thanks George. June brought the best ever club Progressive Dinner. We had almost 30 folks dressed as Roman citizens on one of the hottest days of this year, eating and solving a murder mystery. Great food and great fun.

Hope you were able to get down to Oregon’s Summer Festival. So many fun choices to pick from and to do. Also hope you are free to come on August 5th and visit the Kinton Grange for their 100th Anniversary Celebration with ice cream, carnival games, dance lessons and lots of great information on how we use our grange for community activities. It’s a free event and runs from 2 to 5 p.m. 2 pm square dance lessons, 3 pm round dance lessons and 4 pm English dance lessons. Come join us at 19015 SW Scholls Ferry Rd., Beaverton, OR. We love our Kinton Grange. We have two themed dances in August. On the 4th Hot August Nights and on the 18th is Tropical Paradise Dance. Bring your casual outfits and enjoy some fun summer dancing. Our campout is at the end of the month down in Lincoln City. We are looking forward to unwinding and loafing with our square dancing friends and family.

As we look ahead into September, it’s the 13th that our mainstream lessons start from 7 to 9 p.m. Come bring a friend and join us. We also are looking forward to our Anniversary Dance and putting on the State Dance later in the month. We’ll see our own Kathy Roberts starting her new presidency position for the year. She is a busy girl. See you in a square.

First I must make a correction to last month's report. Our members Wallace & Roberta Prowell celebrated their 67th anniversary in June, not their 50th. They were married in 1950. Congratulations again!

Because our club is going dark in July and August, it was upsetting that the weather report for our last dance in June was in the 90's, indicating we should cancel the dance. But instead we tried something new and moved our dance to the downstairs break area in the grange. It worked great, with our visiting caller Scott Zinser, and we had a "Berry Sundae" good time.

However our mystery trip for the next day (100 degrees) was postponed. To keep dancing over the summer we are visiting four clubs with air conditioning and encouraging our members to attend the Summer Festival and the TVC dances, too. Should be fun!

Please join us August 5th for our Summertime Fun dance called by Scott Zinser and cued by Connie Clark, Aloha Grange. 7 p.m. We begin with Plus followed by two MS tips. Then it is every 3rd tip Plus. We know many of you love root beer floats, so come to our Root Beer Float dance August 19th, same place and same time.

We started the month of June searching for ripe strawberries, and most of us had to resort to supermarket strawberries instead of our delicious Oregon Hoods, which weren't ready for another week. Craig Abercrombie called a lively, fun dance, and guests and club members had a rollicking good time.

Renee Ruud dressed in Hawaiian garb and came up with creative ways for us to dance to Hawaiian-themed music at our Hawaiian Luau Dance. She and Connie overlapped on a couple of songs, which just goes to show that there isn't a lot of Hawaiian music set up for square dancing. Renee entertained us with her lovely voice and interesting tidbits of information about Hawaiian culture, words, and customs.

If the Trophy Dance would have been held a couple of months later, we might have taken the trophy, as our membership numbers will be lower for 2017-18. As it was, we came in second to the Tualatin Timber Squares when we visited the Rosetown Ramblers. It was fun for me to talk with guest caller Don Wood, whose sons went to Timberline High School where I taught. Don and his family lived on the other side of Long Lake from me.

Some of us ended the month by hopping on the Mystery Bus with Sunset Promenaders.

The Tillamook County Fair is coming up in August, and on Thursday, August 10th, the Wave Steppers will be doing a square dance, line dance, and clogging demo on the Courtyard Stage in the center of the fairgrounds. This is the second year we’ve done this. Club caller Joe Wrabek will be calling the squares, and line dance coach Gwen Kiel will lead the line dancers and cloggers. We’ll have a couple folks in square dance regalia working the crowd, handing out coupons for a new round of square dance classes starting in September. Joe and Gwen will also be doing the club’s County Fair Dance Saturday, August 12th.

All the club’s dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall (107 6th Street, at Acacia). About two-thirds of the building’s second floor is a dance floor, built in the 1940s by the Fire Department for the old Firemen’s Balls.

What a busy month here at the Buckeroo Barn! We have been visiting clubs up and down I5. This has been fun for our members and given our new dancers plenty of floor time to practice their new dancing skills. We had 23 members who went to visit Spin Cycle Squares in Springfield. We all had a blast! It was fun to practice dancing from both positions.

We also had 10 members who went to Medford’s Fountain of Youth Dance.

Everyone had a great time and enjoyed meeting up with friends from other clubs. In addition to visitations, we continue to offer “FunShops” on Monday nights to provide more floor time for our members and new dancers.

We are doing a demo for “Relay for Life” on July 22 at 1:30 am. Yes, am!!! We are also joining the Charlie Brown Squares to celebrate at the Canyonville Parade. We are gearing up for another summer tradition…the Douglas County Fair . We will dance August 9-12, from 7 to 9 pm. The Umpqua Area Council sponsors this dance each year. We have a great wooden dance floor that we use, and we are easy to find since we are located by the main entrance. Check out the UAC flyer and join us. In order to dance at the fair you do need to wear square dance attire!

The Buckeroos welcomed new president Bruce Knotts on July 1st. Bruce has danced for more than 40 years. He dances both the mainstream and plus programs, and he is looking forward to helping the Buckeroos grow.

Here at the Barn, we dance all summer long. The barn is air conditioned, and we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
