Oregon Federation News
September 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 September 2017
President's Corner

With the month almost here, it is time for me to get a start on my last message to the dancers in the Federation. It has been a year of ups and downs, but I have weathered it all with a smile on my face, dealt with everything that has been put in front of me and still enjoy it all.

I have about two councils left to visit as of the writing of this letter and hope to make it soon to those. I gave myself 18 months to get councils visited and I still have some time left to make it. Be on the lookout for me.

The state fair dancing has yet to happen as of the writing of this, so when this goes to print on the 20th of August, there is still time to contact me for last minute additions to the list of dancers who will join the others on Monday, August 28, September 2nd and 4th.

The state directory is in the last stages of readiness. It is at the printer and will be distributed at the state meeting at the Kinton Grange on September 16-17. Hope you got your name on the list to purchase one.

The new officers will be installed at the Kinton Grange. Kathy Roberts will be installed as President in her own home hall. Should be interesting to see how her home club roasts her into office. Kathy, you have the Federation at your beck and call. Make use of the year you have in office, enjoy the challenge and don’t be afraid to ask for help whenever you need it.

Thanks to the dancers of the Federation for a great year and I look forward to seeing you at various dances and at Mid-Winter and Summer Festival. They need your support every year.

Marilyn Schmit
President

Editor's Note

As we begin another square dance year, we face a number of challenges.  There will be some spirited discussions in the next year or so regarding the future of the Federation's two annual festivals.  If you have opinions, please find a way to express them.  If your club is one of the many about to begin lessons, remember that those new students represent the future of our activity.  The rest of us can't keep dancing forever.

Our Fifth Saturday dance is September 30 at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. 7:30 - Pre-Rounds and 8:00 - Square Dance. We have had a number of new members join to call and;or cue. So please come on out and join us. Air conditioning, cushioned wood floor and FUN!

The floor at the hall had been refinished in July and is just beautiful. Todd Jensen's team did a fabulous job. Many dancers from all of the clubs took turns 'watching the floor dry and cure." That means we opened up all of the doors and made sure everything was safe and nobody went it. Actually, neighbors would stop by to see what was going on. Several of us took opportunities to advertise and recruit.

Kirby Goode, CCCA member, remains on 'in home' hospice. He took a tumble recently and is right now, bedridden. It's hard but with Kirby's caregiver, Jake Westra, and our square dance family and other friends and family we are handing in there.

Sharon Greenman, CCCA members, suffered a heart attack the same day Kirby fell. She remain in the hospital. We pray both Kirby and Sharon get strength back and are better soon.

Keep on dancing and having FUN!

Single Trees danced on July 14 with three squares on the floor with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. Some of us journeyed north to Salem to dance at the 2017 Summer Festival and visit with friends we don't always get to dance with. Chris, Laurie and Gaynor were mostly in the advanced dance hall enjoying the featured caller Johnny Preston up from Indio, California; Jim Steele from Bend area; Jack Hardin from Washington; and Randy Dibble from Newberg (who normally calls in Salem on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Fridays at Salem Swingin' Stars). The count was not in Saturday evening but they had 53 Saturday registrants at around 5 PM and had close to 350 pre-registered. It will be good to hear the final count. While not as well attended as Mid-Winter normally is, I think this Summer Festival was a great success. The school venue with two huge gymnasiums available with wood floors, another huge room with linoleum squares for the round dancers, and the painted cement floor for the advanced dancing, all with air-conditioning, made it really nice with good flow back and forth for all the dancers. All was well organized and I was not aware of any glitches. Well done Salem and Mid-Willamette Valley dancers! You, along with all the fine callers and cuers did a great job of making a lot of dancers happy.

Besides the three Trees already mentioned on Saturday I saw Lee Kelley in the mainstream hall and visited with Connie and Paul on a couple of occasions. Next year it will be held in Grants Pass. Hope more dancers from our area will plan on being there.

In early July we had a fun club picnic in a lovely environment at Suzanne’s country home. The weather was wonderful, and we had a barbecue with yummy food, blueberry picking, croquet, a hayride, and lots of us playing the dog race game.

Our September dances will be Sept 8th with Jim Hattrick / Jackie Gale, and on Sept 22nd - Craig Abercrombie & Al Frazier will call for our Sock Hop with Jackie Gale cueing.

We really enjoyed the air conditioning at Emerald Dance Center this past summer. We've been dancing here since 2013 and enjoy having a storage closet, cupboard, stage, in-house speaker, a kitchen, and a beautiful cushioned wood floor. The floor was refinished in July and is absolutely beautiful. Todd Jensen and his crew did a fabulous job. A number of dancers took turns opening up the hall to air it out so it could dry and cure. Several of our dancers did their part. We thank everyone from all of the clubs who helped out.

Kris Jensen was here in August to call for Cast-A-Shadow and Spin Cycle Squares. Kris is a national caller from Albuquerque. Kris and Kurt's mom moved up from Medford to Eugene which makes it easier to visit without the extra travel time. Eugene has wonderful opportunities for senior living. Kurt is our Vice-President.

One of our members from Albany, Cheryl Hagey, is recovering from a fall she suffered at the national convention in Cincinnati. We hope to see her in a square very soon. Cheryl and Tim oftentimes bring their grandson, "Prince" Killian with them. We are enjoying watching him grow. He's such a little gentleman and always says 'please' and 'thank you.' He's getting too big for Tim to carry him on his back to dance. That was always fun, but they do grow up fast and too big for the special carrier. Kllian will do high fives and fist bumps too. Cheryl is our secretary.

We dance from 5:30 - 8:00 almost every Sunday in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. Please go to the “When and Where” to see if we are dancing on any particular Sunday. All levels welcome. Lessons/dances are always casual dress.

Kirby Goode remains on 'in home' hospice care. He's hanging in there on his oxygen and nebulizer treatments. Kirby misses everyone, misses calling and square dancing and round dancing. He welcomes visitors and still has a sense of humor. When Spin Cycle Squares has their monthly board meetings at Christina and Kirby's he is right there in the thick of it.

Happy Dancing!

We had a good turn out for our Summer Dance. Very thankful for our air conditioned hall and enjoying the new finish on the dance floor. Everyone had a great time.

We will have our Annual Picnic at Island Park on August 26. That is always a fun event with friends and family joining us by the river.

We are looking forward to the New Dancer Class starting in September.

Next up is our Back to School Dance on Saturday, September 2nd. We hope you can join us.

We're grateful to all those who helped put on a successful Summer Festival. What a special weekend it was.

Looking to recruit for fall lessons, Cynthia from our club has planned a couple of demo dances to raise awareness and show how fun square dancing is. We danced at the Benton County Fair in extremely warm conditions. Many thanks to Sandy Harris for calling! We plan to dance at the Corvallis Farmer's Market in September. Our club is planning a potluck and meeting to reconnect and gear up for the fall.

Our mainstream lessons will be on Monday evenings, the first one being Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m. with Bruce Lowther as our wonderful instructor! We look forward to kicking off the dance season on Sept. 9 with our regular dance! Karen

31 IWW dancers had a fabulous July 8 visitation to the Aloha Grange. Then many of us joined dancers from other clubs to dance on the Capitol steps on July 14 in a warm-up (on a warm sunny day) for the Summer Festival. The incomparable Crew did their usual superb job calling for us. The Summer Festival at Blanchet Catholic School in Salem was a huge success. Well done and many thanks to the Summer Festival Committee and the many Summer Festival volunteers.

Our club was dark in August for our usual dances, but as of this writing we are looking forward to our annual fund raiser project of parking cars at the Polk County Fair, and to hosting a demonstration square dance at the Polk County Fairgrounds on August 19 as part of the Upcoming special Eclipse dance. Our Veterans’ Day Dance will be on November 11. Happy dancing! Dee and Bert Mackaman

The club will start Intermediate level Waltz class on Sept. 14. This is for dancers who have had Phase 2 waltz lessons. Our summer has been spent on getting more acquainted with cha cha and rumba as they flow and putting the more difficult steps in place. Each week has been filled with dancing and adding a move or two to make our dancing experience more fulfilling.

A few of us attended the TVC round dance party on July 29. It was a good dance with a good variety of cuers and multiple levels of dancing for all in attendance.

We send our healing thoughts to Jeanine Norden for her broken pelvis and to Stephanie Lozano for her fractured ankle. Healing wishes for both of you from all of us. Marilyn Schmit

Hi all - we're back! We are kicking off September with our dance on September 8. This is going to be an Island Pie Night. Decorations will be along the lines of a tropical island and we will be having a set break time downstairs for a variety of pies with ice cream.

Our lessons start on Tuesday September 12 and we are hopeful for a good sized class this year. Last season Thomas ended up having to cancel his lessons as we just couldn't get consistent students and he kept having to go back over the first couple of lessons.

Mom is working hard on finalizing Silverton High as the location for the teen festival as I write this. The new principal is interested in making it work out.

We had fun at the Homer Davenport Parade on August 5. Leonard Snodgrass always does a great job with a parade. We had a full square on the trailer plus a few more to trade in and out. We also had a couple of walkers who were handing out lesson flyers.

See you at a dance soon! Petrina Buchheit

With all this hot weather, Willamette Squares indeed had the perfect theme for their monthly dance the fourth Saturday in July. A great crowd turned out for The Lazy Daisy Days of Summer dance. Everyone was welcome to come casually dressed in summer attire, and with the air-conditioning everyone was comfortable, even though the Salem Square Dance Center did heat up some from all the lively dancing! On the refreshment table there were plenty of finger foods and snacks along with a plentiful supply of drinks for everyone to remain hydrated.

No matter the weather, Willamette Squares and their guests can always count on having an enjoyable time dancing together! Willamette Squares is looking forward to lessons come fall. In the meantime, do the cool thing and come dance with us! Jodee Howard

We suggest you take some of the new dance classes offered, as it supports lessons and indirectly new dancers. If you don't know a cloverleaf from a Track Two, you could probably use refresher dance lessons. And if you don't know a Walk Out Two from a Travelling Scissors, it's probably time for a round dance refresher.

Jul 12 was among our most successful dances. Those silly guys! They told me it was a wet T-Shirt dance, so I dutifully donned my T-Shirt and went into the shower. When I got out I put on some other things, got my snacks, and headed off to the dance. What saved my modesty was that it was so hot that day, my shirt had completely dried by the time I got to the dance!

Aug 2 was so hot we cancelled. It was the only time we cancelled a Wednesday in recent history.

Our lessons start this month, and we may have the cheapest lessons in town! Imagine: $3 person, $5 couple, $8 family. Okay, I’ll tell our secret: The caller is Glenn Hauskins, who is volunteering his time. He does so much for the club, little wonder he's president.

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
The summer months of July and August found Chaps and Petticoats DARK (not hosting dances). However, July 2017 has been anything but the “Lazy Days of Summer.”

With our Treasurer, Vicki Pounds, as Chair, we planned our Chaps and Petticoats fundraiser, a food booth at the Hop Festival in Hubbard on July 15th. We served Elephant Ears and Specialty Drinks (Italian Sodas and Blended Coffees); as soon as the Parade ended, our booth was buzzing with thirsty people - we credit our new booth signage for bringing in the crowds. Combined with "hot" weather, we netted more this year than any other - which will keep our lesson days in the black. We ran out of product this year too and closed our booth earlier than any other year. We enjoyed seeing a few of you at the "HOP," that always makes us smile! Thank you, Members and friends for making our booth a success!

Did you make it to the Summer Festival at the Blanchet Catholic School in Salem the weekend of July14-16? Chaps and Petticoats had only a handful of members there (different days), as our food-booth fundraiser took priority. Thank goodness it was local - Kudos to the organizers and planners.

The excellent weather held out for Newberg's "Dance Under the Stars" dance on July 28th. Eleven squares danced under the stars, while Randy Dibble called and Julie Stiers cued the Rounds. Chaps and Petticoats members were shy of one person to complete a square. If you've never been, mark you calendar's for next year's "full-moon" night on July 27, 2018. You dance outside, on a tennis court coated with pulverized rubber, the stars above and see sooo many friends - you can't quit smilin'.

Care to join us on August 12th at 10:00AM and dance on the trailer in the Aurora Colony Days Parade on Main street? Wear your floral attire as their theme is "A Community Garden."

WE will offer two-FREE lessons in Mainstream on Sundays, Sept. 17th and Sept. 24th, from 6-8pm at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora. Yes we will need Angels - and Angels dance for FREE throughout our Mainstream lesson weeks.

The Chaps and Petticoats will not be hosting dances in September (only lessons...see info in previous paragraph). Yes, we are DARK September 1st (due to Labor Day weekend) and September 15th too. Why? We want to take our 2017 student graduates to the Toedraggers' Anniversary Dance on September 15th at the Kenton Grange where they will dance to the Wildcards (three callers: KC Curtis, Mike Halley and Terry Halley). WHY? Mike Halley is moving to California, there will not be many more dances that this trio will call in the Portland area this year.

We return to 1st and 3rd Friday hosted-dances at the Maplewood Grange in October (6th and 20th, respectively). See you in a square !

Happy Feet,

Betty Chipps

It has been a hot summer and found us cancelling a couple of dances, which is a first for us. So we are looking forward to the cooler nights and slightly shorter days in September. This is the back to school month, so we are starting up our mainstream classes September 14th, with Scott Zinser. We will meet every Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 PM.

Another change that occurs in September is the price of our dances going up to $6.00. The cost of our insurance on the Barn jumped up this year significantly, so we are passing the cost along. For Country Cut-Ups members, it will still be an incredible deal.

We want to thank all the dancers who helped us have some great fun at the Boring Barn this summer with the Dan Nordbye/Julie Stiers Father's Day Dance, the July 1st picnic and dance with Jim Hattrick, and the 5th Saturday Surf's Up beach themed dance in July with George and Patty Hermann calling and cueing. These were all well supported by the square dance community and we are grateful! You all make this such a fun place to dance!

Summer is here and someone sure turned up the heat! Although we’ve been dark at Hoppers we have still had lots of dancing around at other clubs. This week it seems many clubs have cancelled due to heat. We still managed to get 3 banners so far this summer.

We had our annual picnic this last Sunday and shared a great meal and fellowship. Don & Joanne Oja hosted us at their beautiful farm again and the weather was perfect. We had 48 in attendance and our president, Melissa James, set our course for the coming dance year. We kick off on September 2nd with our Back to School Dance. Our new dance format will be in place. PLEASE NOTE 7-7:30 Pre-rounds, 7:30-9:45 Plus. Refreshments and break at 9:45. School supply donations gladly accepted and encouraged. We hope you’ll join us as we dance to the talents of Jim Hattrick at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Bring on the dancing!

Even though everyone’s thoughts in August seemed to circle the lunar events on August 21st, it did nothing to eclipse the fun and excitement at the Oaky Doaks’ “Thorns and a Rose” dance on the first Saturday of the month. An interstellar time was had by everyone and it seemed like nothing could cast a shadow on the joyful mood and good times as they danced to the heliacal Callers, KC Curtis, George Herman and Darrel Kalmbach and the celestial Cuer Patty Herman. It was a cosmic event indeed.

As we labor into the month of September, we are reminded that summer has ended. Along with that, it means the end of the best time of the year ever, vacation. That dreaded moment has returned. It’s back to school.

On Saturday, September 2nd, we will be having our “Back to School” dance where we will be collecting supplies for our neighborhood school, Oak Grove Elementary. Bring a donation of school supplies and get $1.00 off of admission. Have a flash back moment as you enjoy a sack lunch during break. Caller Mark Wheeler and Cuer Tami Helms. Pre-rounds start at 7:00 with Mainstream is from 7:30 to 10:00 with a Plus tip done prior to the 9:00 break.

Making a stop Saturday, August 19th, as part of their Farewell to Portland Tour will be Make and Helen Halley. Come join us in what may be their last time to call and cue at the Oak Grove Community Center. Pre-rounds start at 7:00 with Mainstream is from 7:30 to 10:00 with a Plus tip done prior to the 9:00 break.

We’ve been enjoying a busy and fun summer of dancing. In July a large number of us attended summer festival in Salem . Later that month we enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the B 'N 'B 's as we visited them for our visitation. Les Seeley was calling that dance and we had a wonderful time. Thank you B'N'B’s.

July is also the time when we have our annual campout .Since our usual camp site is now under new ownership , we have been making our camp out a trip to The Diamond Lake festival for the last two years instead. Several members attended and enjoyed it.

Craig Abercrombie has volunteered to teach our lessons in September. They will be at our hall which is Milwaukie Community Center on 42nd and Jackson Street. Lessons start Sunday September 10 at 5:30 PM.

Friday, June 2nd, Nancy received a heart pacemaker. So far, she’s not jumping up and down with energy, but hoping it will come soon. Kaiser wanted her to fill up with my same old green “poison” med, and is just now working it out of her system.

We are looking forward to our Anniversary Dance, which will be past by the time you read this. We’re, as always, thankful to our River City Riders who put so much practice and joy into their performances.

We dance all year every second and third Saturday and warmly welcome all dancers. We would love to share our fun with you.

Thanks to all who have Nancy good wishes and kept Rocky dancing.

Would you believe the kids have started back to school already? Summer seemed awful short. The Tumbleweeds hope to start a mainstream class in September. If you know of somebody that would like to take lessons in the daytime, please tell them about our club. The lessons will start at 11:00am on Fridays.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

Well, summer is still here. It doesn't seems to be as bad as a couple of weeks ago, but high 70's and low 80's is SO uch better. We must remember these sunny days this winter when it is raining and the snow is falling and everyone wishes for more sunshine. We are in a place where there are 4 seasons.

Don't forget the Council dance Friday, September 29th. The council is excited to have Scott Zinser calling & Elaine Funk cueing our next council dance Fruitdale Grange. How exciting. Should be a great time for everyone, including your newer dancers. Don't forget to support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley. The next Council meeting will be October 2, 2017 at Denny's Restaurant on Biddle Road at 4:30pm. There are are still "Learn to Square Dance t-shirts available. We have quite a few 2x's and have found that the t-shirts are a great conversation starter.

Summer Festival committee has been working hard to bring excitement and fun next year, June 21-24, 2018. If you have any questions about summer festival or the council contact Lorri McIntosh at nursylady1976@yahoo.com

The council went together with Rogue Sis Q Callers and Cuers to advertise new square dance classes starting in September on the Grants Pass transit system. We should know in October how successful the advertising was.

The council is excited to have a new caller, Jean Brown AND a new cuer Rikki Lobato. Look for their names and help support the new kids on the block.

We had a very tiring week working in the trailer at the Siskiyou Golden Fair, but it was fun as well.

I want to thank all the people who worked in the trailer, we made enough for another year. YEA!

There were enough dancers to shake a leg at the fair on Saturday night and even had some people in the audience come out and had a great time square dancing.

We will be dancing at our Birthday Dance on Saturday, September 16. Terry Halley will be calling and Sarge Glidewell will be cueing. Rounds start at 7:30 with squares at 8PM. Turning 63 this year.

Our classes will start up on September 11, and will be open 18th & 25th.

Looking forward to a new year.

The Rogue Squares turned 2 years old August 5, 2017. Our Birthday Dance was a real fun dance. Guest Caller Jim Steele from Bend, OR. was just great. We hope to get him back real soon. Ending the evening with the Grand Spin was top of the cake. That is such a fun way to end the evening anytime. Mary Nutt did a fantastic job of keeping the floor filled with Round Dancing, thank-you Mary.

We had a great club meeting August 11, 2017. Some of the Star Promenaders came as guest and we shared ideas and plans for the future to work together on how to bring in and keep students, encourage Angels with fun idea that may include free dances and make this a bigger success with new dancers.

The Rogues voted on changing our one dance a month, beginning January 2018, from Third Friday to Second Friday. We'll keep you posted and remind again.

See ya at a Club picnic or dance, have fun anyway. Gwen

Our club wishes to send a great big thank you to all the dancers that supported 2017 Diamond Lake Festival. The callers, Eric Henelau and Wayne Weaver were fantastic as expected. There were ten squares dancing at 10:30 on Saturday evening.

Eric dived into the lake on Saturday morning during the “Splash in the Lake” session. He is a great sport. He brought three squares of dancers with him to Diamond Lake. And they brought a new board for the dancing floor.

If you have never come to the festival, I encourage you to make it a priority next year. Hunter Keller will be joined by Wayne Weaver to call, and Mary Ann Callahan will be the cuer. On Tuesday evenings we invite the spectators to join us as we dance. Each year we have several non-dancers participating. Wayne always lets them know that Square Dance lessons start in September all over the country. Next year’s chairmen are Walt and Darlene Shontz.

We are looking forward to Circle N Squares Birthday Dance in September, and Klamath Falls Potato Festival in October.

Our mainstream lessons will start September 14 and the Rogue Squares begin lessons Sept. 11. There are also lessons starting in Grants Pass, Yreka, Roseburg and Klamath Falls. Angels are needed at all these lessons. But remember, angels are at the lessons to set an example, but we need to let the instructors do the teaching.

Wayne will have A/1 and A/2 workshops in September and start lessons in October.

We celebrated August birthdays and anniversaries at our August 12 dance. This was a great success both in numbers attending and the ice cream and cake provided.

IMPORTANT NOTE -- because of temperatures forecast to be in the upper 90s with unhealthy air conditions, the Hahn Barn Dance has been canceled. We'll let you know if it is rescheduled.

(((Since the OFN is published mid month, you still have time to plan on attending our annual Hahn Farm Potluck and Dance on Sunday, August 27th. Potluck by the lake begins at 5:30 followed by dancing in the barn from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. This year our caller is Janienne Alexander with Mark McDonald from Central OR cueing. In case of high temperatures, we will still hold the dance unless it is over 90 degrees that day, then check the Oregon Federation Facebook or the TVC website for our decision on whether or not we will hold the dance. Last year, it was about 85 degrees when we started the picnic. We kept cool at the pond where there was a nice cool breeze and everyone was comfortable. By the time we went to the barn to dance, the temperature had dropped lower and it was quite pleasant.)))

Although not a TVC event, all dancers are encouraged to attend the Dance & OFSRDC State Meeting on September 16th &17th at the Kinton Grange. The Toe Draggers will be serving a country style dinner at 6:00 PM on the 16th followed by a dance with KC and Bev Flint as MC's. The dance will start with pre-rounds at 7:00 pm, followed by a mainstream square dance & level 2-3 rounds at 7:30 pm with every 3rd tip plus. Callers and cuers from the floor will be welcome. TVC please bring desserts or finger foods for the break at 10:00 pm. The following morning, Sunday September 17th, the State meeting will be held. This weekend is a great opportunity for you to meet with and visit with your Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Club officers and delegates from around Oregon. Our own Kathy Roberts will be installed as Federation President.

Our next Council event is the Tri-Council Dance on September 30th. It will be held at the Oak Grove Community Center, 14496 Southeast Cedar Avenue, Oak Grove, OR 97267. This dance will feature the Wildcards calling with Lonnie Sycks cueing. Format: 7-7:30 pm Plus; 7:30-7:50 pm Advanced Rounds; 7:50-8:00 Rounds; 8:00-10:00 Mainstream. This will be the Wild Cards last dance calling together. Mike Halley will be relocating to California in October.

Columbia River Dancers - Link
What a summer it has been for the Columbia River Dancers. Except for a slight hiccup when Jim Hattrick, our caller, had to overnight in the hospital and the weather so hot that one night the hall did not cool down enough, we had a great time dancing. Lessons continued and under Jim's guidance it seems our classes ended well beyond the basic 51 calls. Counting angels, we had four squares most lessons. Great thanks goes out to all of the angels!!

The club had a great time visiting the Country Cut-ups in July, eating hot dogs with them and retrieving our banner. Now, on to September with new classes (remember we start a new class every first Tuesday of the month) and school starting again. Our dance on September 9th will have Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing. September 23rd has Randy Dibble working us through the squares and Ken Pratt Cueing our round dancers. What a way to start the fall semester. The Hazel Dell Grange has a nice wood floor and our big fans move the air so nicely. Remember we dance plus from 7 to 8 PM and mainstream from 8 to 10. Singles are welcome and we are known for making sure everyone gets to dance.

Many of our new dancers are anxiously waiting the September 9th dance as there will be a clothing sale that day. This sale has a twist that has sparked interest in other clubs and club members. In addition to the sale of clothes and other articles by the CRD we are making it possible for outside clubs and dancers to sell their items and keep their proceeds. Tables will be for sale for other clubs and individuals. So, gather up your skirts that you used to wear before you lost weight, or the boots that now cramp your toes and sell them. If clubs or individuals are interested in a table, please contact Francis Montgomery at 360-921-6675 or on-line at franniebandit@gmail.com. If you have an item that you would like to donate, our club will gladly accept it.

Lastly, September 23rd is our Back to School Dance. We will be collecting school supplies at both dances, however. The club will give all of the supplies to Danny and Carol Williamson's daughter who teaches in a very needy school in Yakima. Danny and Carol have done so many things for square dancing and we feel this is a small way to say thank you. So bring rulers, backpacks, crayons, scissors and other school supplies when you come.

Note: Did you know that Star Through is one of the few calls that are gender specific?

Eager Beavers - Link
We will welcome the cooler days of fall as summer finally ends. Do you ever remember so many hot days with so little to no rain? Now you know square dancers are tough and just keep those feet moving to the calls and the music’s beat.

Summer Festival in Salem had around 100 people dancing on the capitol steps which was only fitting since square dancing is Oregon’s State Dance. Seventeen Eager Beavers were dancing with about 450 dancers from around the state on Saturday night. The Sunset Promenaders won the attendance award.

We decided that we would not wait for Christmas to come but we could think of cool and celebrate Christmas in July. The challenge was finding Christmas theme clothing to wear in July. Dancers rose to the occasion turning out in red, green, and gold outfits. Music was no problem for our caller. Maybe we were not any cooler but I think we thought we were.

On September 4th we will dance at the Aloha Grange as Sunset Presbyterian will be closed for Labor Day.

The Eager Beavers and the Hoedowners will dance at the Cedar Mill Market on September 9th for an hour starting at 10 am.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

We are in a club of transition. With our new members, we are making decisions on what night we want to dance, how often, and whether we want to do lessons again in the fall. We are going to start up dine out so that we can get to know our new members better. This can be an exciting time.

Hoedowners - Link
July was a wonderful dance month for the Hoedowners. On July 8th we hosted our Hawaiian Luau Dance. Which is your favorite Hawaiian island? In a very unscientific poll, Hoedowners seem to prefer Maui, at least in 2017. Daryl’s back has been troubling him so while he recovered we were fortunate to have Randy Dibble call for us. We also had a guest caller and cuer; George and Patty Herman. The Oregon weather did its best to set a tropical tone as the weather crept into the 90’s. So glad we have air conditioning as we had 75 guests for the evening. A huge shout out to the Independence Wagon Wheelers who brought 30 dancers to fill the floor. We love seeing all those sequined wagon wheels glittering on the floor.

July 22nd was our Floatin’ Away Dance was our traditional root beer float dance. Thank heavens we were prepared for the 90 degree weather with cooling treats. Les Seeley graciously filled in for Daryl while Randy Lewis cued the entire evening.

July 29th was Dance Under the Stars in McMinnville. A wonderful dance we try to attend every year. For various reasons, we only had a square this year.

September is looming ahead as the store shelves are stocked with pencils, tablets and backpacks. You know what that means, our September 8th Back to School Sock Hop. Remember to bring school supplies or lunch box treats to donate.

Don’t forget our New Dancer Class begins Wednesday, September 13th at 7 pm. Please invite those who are interested in finding out a bit about square dancing or want to brush up on the mainstream moves.

Some of our members will be joining the Eager Beavers for a square dance demo at the Beaverton Farmers Market on September 9th. We hope to generate interest in our lessons while we entertain the visitors.

September 23rd is our Farmer’s Market Dance where we’ll celebrate the harvest and dine on fresh produce from the garden.

Since this is being written in July, it won't be as current in September, but it will still be current. Jeanine Norden, our much appreciated cuer, fell over their largest dog, breaking her pelvis in two places. When she is ready to leave the hospital, she will spend four weeks or so in rehab. Tami Helms will cue the first dance in August, while Dennis Smith will cue the second dance for us. We will go dark the first Saturday in September. We will have news on our website for information after that.

However, there is another issue to write about: wearing fragrances and perfumes. Although this subject has been covered before, it has been quite a while. Jeanine has found that along with other dancers, she is extremely sensitive to scents (you could say that she is "scentsitive"), and being exposed to the scents could result in coughing and the loss of her voice. It will be most appreciated if attendees could avoid the uses of fragranced products in order to help protect Jeanine's lungs and provide a comfortable environment for her and others with this sensitivity.

Julie Stout was a guest cuer on the 26th. Thank you Julie!

In September R Square D reverts back to our winter dance schedule which is the second Friday and fourth Saturday. Plus dancing begins at 7 and mainstream at 8PM.

October brings Octoberfest. It will be held the 2nd weekend in October, 13th to 15th, at the Rose Valley Grange Hall. Sunset Promenaders visited The Toe Draggers Club on July 7th celebrating their Annual 4th of July B. B. Q., and dance. It was a good time and we had 12 Promenaders there.

The Club went to the Summer Festival in Salem on July 14th & 15th and brought home the Wood Trophy for the Club with the highest percentage of members registered.

We had our Club Picnic at Noble Woods Park and had 36-people with lots of food, played Bingo, and socialized. It was special time including several of our new members but we missed our President and wife who were in North East Montana, and Judy and Floyd were on a trip too.

Both Mainstream Dances in September (2nd, 16th) the Club will be dark. On the second we will be doing a visitation to the Valley Squares and on the 16th we will be attending the State Federation Meeting and dance at Kinton Grange. The Promenaders Plus will have dances September 7th and 21st in our air conditioned with a wood floor hall. The hall is at 267 E. Main St. Hillsboro time is 7:00 to 9:30. What a wonderful summer we are having with lots of square dancing events coming and going for our enjoyment. We want to thank all those who worked on Summer Festival. What a treat with meeting old and new friends dancing away the weekend. Our first dance in July brought so many friends out to the Toe Dragger’s BBQ and birthday celebration for KC. We also were able to surprise Linda Curtis the same evening, with a retirement party from teaching, that she so deserves. Enjoy your time together Linda and KC. Want to thank everyone that came August 5th to the Kinton Grange 100th Anniversary Celebration. It was warm but so much fun. We are looking forward to our club campout the end of August down in Lincoln City. We always have a great time together. The Solar Eclipse will be over so maybe Oregon will be a quieter state by the time our campout rolls around.

September 1st is our regular dance of the month. September 10th is our Kinton Grange Country Antique Faire from 9 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Shop till you drop and consume breakfast or lunch on your visit. All money collected for meals will benefit the Kinton Grange. September 15th is our Toe Dragger’s Berry Happy 42nd Anniversary Dance with KC and the Wild Cards calling and Bev Flint cueing. We are looking forward to a fun evening. Berry desserts and ice cream will be served at the break. The Toes are ready to go for September 16th, the State Dance where new officers will be installed, including our own Kathy Roberts as President. We are calling the dance Berry Country Picnic State Dance. State dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. with the dance following at 7:30 p.m. at the Kinton Grange with our own KC Curtis calling and Bev Flint cueing. It will be a special night. Come join in on all the fun.

This is an early notice but would like you to save the date to come out and help us Dance for the Cure. The event is our Man Enough to Wear Pink Dance!!!! It’s on October 1st, 2017. Time is from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Kinton Grange. Donations accepted at the door. We hope to raise more money for the Cancer Cure than last year. Let’s come out and dance for all of our friends and family members who have been touched by cancer.

The Tigard Grange has been too warm to dance this summer, so in both July and August we’ve been making visitations to other clubs who have air conditioning, and it’s been so much fun!

In September our annual Mainstream lessons begin on Sunday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 as always. This year beforehand we will be adding a Mainstream Workshop from 2:00-3:00 for everyone who wants to brush up on some Mainstream calls.

And we’re especially looking forward to our Anniversary Dance on Friday September 22nd, with national caller Adam Christman and cuer Sandra Pinion. So please come and join us, to “Celebrate Good Times!”

We have had guest callers Mike Sikorsky and Michael Halley, we danced in parades, and have been out visiting other clubs! Our dancers earned their dangles for broom partner, balloon between the knees, mummify the caller and wait… what?! Dancing in the women’s bathroom?! Yep, that’s right! We promenaded squares in and out of the women’s bathroom, doing a couple of figures while we were in there and sashaying our way out. We had giggles all around that night!

We will be hosting a trophy dance in the next month or two as soon as we can find a location to have a BBQ and outdoor dance. Any suggestions? Keep your eyes open for a flyer!

Our July 1st Dance was lots of fun. Scott Zinser was taken aback when a square yelled out enthusiastically after he called, "Bend the Big Line!" That is one of our favorite calls.

We were dark for Summer Festival. A wonderful time was had by all our members who attended.

We had enough people to form a square for our visitation to Toe Draggers Red, White, & Blue Dance & BBQ. KC & Bev found a variety of music to fit the theme. Darrell Kalmbach joined KC for a number of tips. Decorations and food were impressive. Now Dan needs to give us the flag we won...

Please join us for our Back to School Dance September 2nd at Aloha Grange. Scott Zinser is calling & Connie Clark cueing. We are grateful for any school supplies you might donate.

We will be dark September 16 for the Oregon Federation Dance.

The Wave Steppers’ Anniversary Dance Saturday, September 9th will be an Elvis Dance, with caller Mark Wheeler as Elvis, and cuer Connie Clark.

All the club’s dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall (107 6th Street, at Acacia). About two-thirds of the building’s second floor is a dance floor, built in the 1940s by the Fire Department for the old Firemen’s Balls.

Garibaldi is on the Oregon Coast, 9 miles north of Tillamook. About 2/3 of the second story of City Hall is a dance floor, built in the 1940s for the old Firemen’s Balls. Enter on the Acacia St. (uphill) side, one block off Highway 101 (the main street of town).

The heat has not slowed us down here at the Buckeroo Barn! We installed a new cooling system this past spring and have had much opportunity to put it to use this summer! We have continued our FunShops and visitations along with our monthly dances.

Our first dance of the month was our 2nd Annual Ladies Night Out Dance. We had Janienne Alexander down from Tualatin to call for us, and Jackie Gale cued for the round dancers. We had a large turnout and everyone had a great time! We even had a national caller, Michael Kellogg from California, stop by the barn for a visit. Janienne invited him up to call , and boy were we treated to a fun tip! We hope to see him back at the barn in the future. Watch our flyers and plan to join us the next time he is in the area…you will be happy you came!

We also danced at the Douglas County Fair this month. Douglas County Fair allows us to hold dances every night at the fair. Past members of the Buckeroo Barn have built a nice wooden dance floor that we continue to use. We are part of the entertainment so we are asked to wear square dance attire, but it is structured as a dance not an exhibition. It is so much fun to dance under the stars and be part of such a fun community event. We are very happy that the Umpqua Area Council continues to sponsor this event each year.

The Buckeroos are heading to Canyonville to meet up with the Charlie Brown Squares to dance in the Pioneer Days Parade on the 26th. This an old fashioned, small town event that is the backbone of the community. It is in its 51st year and is held in Pioneer park. If you are looking for some family appropriate fun, come and join us!

We will be having a Back to School Barn Sale on August 18-19. We do several fundraisers throughout the year to help us raise money for the upkeep of the barn. We have a large selection of great items, so if you need to furnish a dorm room the barn will be the place to be on the 18-19th!

Remember… we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
