President's Corner

As I write my first article for the President’s Corner, I am filled with gratitude.  Thank you to my home club the Toe Draggers for hosting the State meetings, dinner and dance last weekend. It was a busy weekend for our club with our 42nd Anniversary dance the night before. Thank you to our council, the TVC, for attending and supporting our anniversary dance and all of our State activities.  Thank you to our friends and dancers in neighboring councils for coming to both dances and the dinner on Saturday. And finally, thank you to all of the State Delegates and Officers who took time out of their busy schedules throughout the state to come to our club for the weekend.  It was a fun weekend full of great music, food, friendships, and square dance business.

I would also like to give a special thank you to our outgoing OFSRDC president Marilyn Schmit and her board for all of their work on behalf of the dancers of Oregon.  Marilyn is tireless in her efforts on behalf of the dancers.  She has been a great mentor to me this year and I hope to continue in her footsteps.

This year, I would like to encourage all of us to focus on working together to support each other’s clubs by visiting other clubs, promoting not only our own clubs, but clubs in our areas, and special events throughout the state.  During the next year, I will be offering suggestions and looking for ideas to share on how we can help each other.  Working together we will all be successful.

Kathy

Editor's Note

It's nice to get some rain to clear the smoke out of the air, but I'm going to miss summer.

As clubs dig in to the new square dance year and get lessons rolling again, I hope you'll drop me a note with success stories about your lessons.  You don't have to be Ernest Hemingway to write a letter or short article to let the rest of the state know what's working or not working in your club.

Federation Meeting

The Federation executive board held its quarterly meeting on September 17 at the Kinton Graonge in Beaverton.  At this meeting, your new officers for the 2017-2018 square dance year were installed:

In addition, Dale and Kathy Worthington were named the newest Goodwill Ambassadors for the state.  We congratulate all of these volunteers and thank them for their service to Oregon's square dance community.

In meeting business, the Federation voted to establish a process to get background checks on all adults involved with youth at Federation-sponsored events.  Dave Cooper pointed out that, in future years, you might not remember who called or who cued, but you'll remember the special things that made a dance or festival fun.  He is going to be writing more about adding fun into our activity in upcoming months.

Mid-Winter

Start planning for Mid Winter-Festival 2018, January 26, 27 and 28, 2018.

Our dances in August were well attended with four squares on the floor for each one. Dancing on the newly refinished floor (done in late July) was much easier than in previous years. Jim Hattrick called the second Friday in great style. Our 4th Friday dance was a special occasion. It was so good to see caller Les Seeley and his wife Paula with us once more. Now that he is retired to Arizona, we won’t get much of a chance to dance to his fun calling. Caller Renee Ruud joined him on the stage. The two voices combined were spectacular! And Jackie Gale was in top form cueing for both dances.

We are looking forward to a great dance this October with Jim Hattrick calling our second Friday dance as usual, and for our fourth Friday Halloween Bash (costumes encouraged but not required). We will have K C Curtis as caller and Jackie Gale cueing. Our Halloween dances are always a lot of fun. We never know what costume our treasurer, Joy Pitts, will come up with next!

Just a note that combined club square dance lessons will begin on Sept. 26th. They will be in the ESDC in Hall A beginning at 7 pm. Sandy Harris will be the teacher for the three B-51 series of 10 week lessons. Those wanting to learn the rest of the square dance moves to become a mainstream dancer are encouraged to attend the 8:30 pm to 9 pm class as well as the earlier class. Practice, practice, practice, and bring friends.

Christina Corelli began round dance lessons on Monday, September 11th. Beginning waltz started at 7:00 pm in the Emerald Empire Square Dance Center. Intermediates lessons began at 8:00 pm. The rhythm was determined the first evening. If you two-step and waltz already please come. We'll focus on the most frequently dances rhythms like cha cha, rumba, waltz, foxtrot, slow two-step, jive and maybe mambo and bolero . Knowing two-step and waltz well makes for easier learning of the other rhythms. For intermediates, if you miss the first week or two, please come anyway and she will help you catch up. (Christina Corelli is licensed with ASCAP/BMI and Roundalab.)

Kris Jensen was here again recently and called for us. What a treat! Kris is a national caller from Albuquerque. Kris and Kurt's mom moved up from Medford to Eugene which makes it easier to visit without the extra travel time. Eugene has wonderful opportunities for senior living. Kurt is our Vice-President.

One of our members from Albany, Cheryl Hagey, is still recovering from a fall she suffered at the national convention in Cincinnati. She has been able to dance a little! Yippee! We can't for her to be 100% Tim Hagey is the new secretary for the State Federation. We thank those dancers willing to hold an office. It's a commitment we appreciate.

We dance from 5:30 - 8:00 pm almost every Sunday in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. Please go to the When and Where to see if we are dancing on any particular Sunday. All levels welcome. Lessons/dances are always casual dress.

Kirby Goode remains on 'in home' hospice care. Right now he's bed-ridden as he had a fall a couple of weeks into August. He misses everyone and welcomes visitors.

An article on Spin Cycle Squares square dancing appeared in the Eugene Weekly. It was an interesting article as the reporter is a young gal and her perspective was unique and different. Tim Matteson got the reporter and her friend in a square. They loved it.

Please come and join us for some fun dancing and food. There's always a lot of food!

Happy Dancing!

The Wolf Pack had their annual picnic at Island Park on August 26th. As always, a great time visiting with friends and family and of course some square dancing.

Our Back to school dance on September 2nd was another fun Wolf Pack dance with an enthusiastic group in spite of competing with the Labor Day weekend and the Duck’s home opener at Autzen Stadium.

Next up is our Fall Dance on Saturday, October 6th. Hope you can join us.

As I write this, we're looking ahead to our fall lessons starting on September 25, and we're hoping for a good-sized class.

Our dance season started on Sept. 9 and we're grateful to be able to continue dancing at the hall at the Congregational church with its lovely wood floor. Later, on October 28, we're having our yearly Halloween dance and it will be a fun and festive time! Happy Autumn everyone! Karen

The Hall was dark in August, but the IWW Club had a banner month anyway. Two and a half squares of IWW dancers traveled to Oak Grove on August 5 for a visitation to the Oaky Doaks to surprise and support our wonderful caller George (and Patty) Hermann. Then most of our members helped direct parking and collect admissions at the Polk County Fair, our main club fund raiser. On August 19, IWW hosted square dance lessons for the general public and a demonstration dance at the Polk County Fairgrounds as part of the Total Eclipse celebration. George Hermann outdid himself as teacher and caller, the drop-in students had a blast, and we expect to see several of them at lessons in September.

Our first dance of the new dance year was a birthday party for our caller George Hermann, at which we deluged him with birthday cards and surprised him with a birthday cake.

Thank goodness for the trees and shade at Maud Williamson State Park where we had our annual picnic during the Labor Day Weekend heat wave. Thanks to Tim Hagey for organizing a fabulous picnic. We’re back to our usual schedule, dancing at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall on the first and second Saturday’s beginning at 7:00. George Hermann is our caller. October guest cuers are Sandra Pinion (October 7) and Mark McDonald (October 14). Our Veterans’ Day special dance approaches – watch for details. Come dance with us! Dee and Bert Mackaman

Members of the Lebanon Square Circlers joined in the fun of the Labor Day Weekend Campout at Frank and Marianne Cawrse farm. There were nine trailers and one tent camper. Besides having lots of good food and fellowship at the potlucks, they played croquet and other games, did some dancing and went on several hayrides. On Sunday late afternoon, Charlotte Jeskey called the dances from the heights of the silo. A great time was had by all.

Summer is almost over so it's time to start our regular fall activities. Our first dance was on September 16 with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. We celebrated with root beer floats.

Our dance lessons will begin Sunday, September 17. To publicize our lessons, club members will present demonstration dancing at the Lebanon downtown Farmers Market on Thursday, September 14. See you in a square. Marilyn York

It is early September and I have to write for October. The end of summer brought some really warm weather but we kept on dancing anyway. We have pretty much finished some of the Latin movements for mambo and rumba. We start intermediate waltz lessons on September 14, with an unknown quantity of students attending. We are hoping that some or all of the summer class of cha cha students will continue on and gain more floor time in various rhythms.

A bunch of us attended the 50th anniversary party for Richard and Karen Rubicam at the dance center. It was a very nice party with some good food and lots of dancing, and sharing friendship with the guests who attended.

We are planning a New Year’s Eve party and hope that you will make plans to attend and bring in 2018 with us. Stay tuned for more details. If any of you would like a flyer, please contact me and I will email you one.

Hope that all of you will support your local clubs in their endeavors to have lessons and get more people interested in our favorite pastime of dancing. Marilyn Schmit

Hello to all of you wonderful dancers out there. As you read this, our Annual Corn n Cluck Dance on September 15 has already happened and I’m sure we had a great time. The chicken appeared as he has for the last several years.

We have danced all summer long and had great times. We visited the Silver City Squares and Valley River Dancers in September and are planning more visitations in the coming month. September 29 is our 5th Friday Plus dance. Randy Dibble will call and Ken Pratt will cue. Pre-Rounds start at 7:00 pm, Advanced at 7:30 pm, Plus with Rounds 8:00 -10:15 pm., followed by a final Advanced tip.

We are all anxiously awaiting the return of our Cuer Jeanine Norden who had a very bad fall and is still recuperating. Get Well Soon, Jeanine, we miss you!!

We are looking forward to our new dancers joining the ranks. Mainstream Lessons started on September 13, 6:30 -8:00 pm. Advanced Lessons 8:00 -9:30 pm.

We dance on the first and third Fridays of the month so come join us. Our hall is air conditioned for your dancing comfort. Sheila Machado

We are back in the swing of things. Our island pie night was fun for those who attended. Lots of good pies and desserts! Thanks to those who attended.

We had fun at the state fair dancing on Saturday, September 2 to Thomas Buchheit and Leonard (our "Mystery Caller"). We had a little over one square of dancers so there was a lot of trading in and out. Thomas and Leonard kept us hopping as they traded mikes.

Mom (Karyn Buchheit) has it confirmed with the Silverton High School principal - the teen festival will be there!!!!! They are in the process of trying to finalize paperwork. Don't forget to buy a teen festival pin from us this year - not only does this support us, it is your "pass ribbon" into the festival and lets you attend both the Friday night open dance and the competition on Saturday. (Prices for the pins are higher at the door!)

Our new dancer lessons started on Tuesday, September 12. We will let you know next report how they are going. See you at a dance soon. Petrina Buchheit

We had over 10 squares at our “Dance Under the Stars” in July, with great weather and fun was had by all. We had a guest caller with Randy for our Hawaiian Dance in August and some of our members are currently on the Alaska Cruise with the Dibble Cruisers. We are praying for all those affected by fires, flooding and hurricanes across the US. Keep dancing and enjoying the company of all the friends we make when we go to other clubs. All clubs can use visitors and it takes all of us to keep this activity going.

We started Mainstream lessons on September 12 and will be taking new dancers thru the end of the month. Hope to see you in a square real soon. Jan Amerson

Willamette Squares - Link
I'm inclined to report that Willamette Squares have been hopping, skipping, and jumping through the summer, but it has been more like twirling, passing the ocean, and promenading around the squares! We have been having fun at every dance!

Our latest dance was our watermelon dance where we had our fill of cool, refreshing watermelon. It was perfect summer refreshment while dancing. Thank goodness the square dance center is air-conditioned, but when dancers' internal temperatures rise, a slice of watermelon sure hits the spot!

Depending on the number of plus dancers present, Willamette Squares has been offering a number of plus dances for those who have advanced beyond mainstream. We have had many plus dancers participate, and the feedback has been positive, so we are planning to continue with the opportunity.

Willamette Squares held their quarterly business meeting at Newport Bay Restaurant in Salem. Besides enjoying exquisite cuisine, we took care of the business at hand. There was an announcement from Nancy and Brice Baker, that for health reasons, they can no longer maintain the level of club activity they have become so accustomed to and that they have come to a place where they feel they must resign. They have been longtime faithful members and through dedication and hard work have contributed wholeheartedly to our club's well being. We will miss them but not without sending them off with an appreciation/farewell party!

Reminder: Willamette Squares is hosting lessons this fall starting in September. We look forward to a good turnout! Remember the first lesson is free. Jodee Howard

Country Cut-Ups - Link
We are off to a running start for autumn. While the colorful leaves are falling, we will be keeping the Boring Barn busy. If you read this early, catch our 5th Saturday all Plus dance on Sept. 30th. October will start out with our Anniversary Dance on Oct. 7th with Craig Abercrombie. We will be hosting the Annual Ham Egg and Pancake Breakfast and Bazaar on October 22nd from 8 AM to 1:00 PM. Who knows what surprises you might find at the Bazaar? On October 28th, Scott Zinser will call our 4th Saturday dance and we will have a Spooky Halloween Black Light Dance. Come at 7 PM for Plus or 7:30 PM for Mainstream. Every Thursday evening, we will be holding Mainstream lessons from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. On October 29th, we will be hosting another event for the foreign exchange students in the area. They will go to the pumpkin patch across the street from the Barn, then come join us for dinner and a square dance lesson. It is a fundraiser for our club and a fun time for the students and their families.

We hope to see many guests at our Barn this month for one or more of these functions. It is always fun to dance with the Country Cut-Ups!

Our dance season has begun and no one can remember ever canceling an opening dance, but that’s what we had to do. So our new season opener was September 16th with our annual Johnny Appleseed Dance. Our October dances are Saturday the 7th and our Harvest Days Dance Oct 21st. Please plan to join us as we dance and twirl to the talents of Jim Hattrick. We’ll be serving up Pumpkin goodies and treats at break. Remember our new format; Pre-rounds at 7 and Plus from 7:30-9:45. For those looking for lessons we started on Sept 11 with a start-up class beginning the first Monday of every month. Folks can start up every month and repeat the levels as many times as they want before advancing. Jim teaches Basic, Mainstream and Plus at every lesson. October is also Seaside Sashay month and we hope to see many of you there. Please make a note on your calendars that Nov 4th we will be dark for the Royal Romp. If you’re a Plus dancer and want a really fine weekend of Plus, you won’t want to miss this one. Happy dancing everyone! We’ll look for YOU in a square!

Oaky Doaks - Link
The Oaky Doaks started September off with our “Back to School Dance” where we gathered donations of school supplies for the students at our neighbor, Oak Grove Elementary. During the break we gathered together to enjoy a sack lunch and socialize. On Labor Day, a few of the members joined in for some square dancing fun at the State Fair. Our second club dance found us once again saying good-bye to Caller Mike Halley and his wife Cuer Helen Halley as they made one last round before heading south. We closed out the month with a few of the members attending the Tri-council Dance hosted by the TVC.

Caller Bruce Lowther will be squaring us up and Cuer Judy Russell will round out our edges at our dance on the first Saturday in October. We will be starting a new format for dancing. Pre-rounds will start at 7:00 PM and go until 7:30. Mainstream with rounds will go from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Break will be from 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM. If there are enough Plus dancers, a Plus tip will be done just before going to break.

Know someone interested in square dance and your club isn’t doing lesson? Has it been a while since you have done Plus dancing and would like a little refresher. Then come join the Oaky Doaks on Thursdays for Introductory Dance Sessions. Levels include Basic, Mainstream and Plus. You’ll be dancing a complete dance every week. Singles, couples and families welcome. No partner required. Best of all it can all be done in casual attire. Classes start at 7:00 PM and go until 9:00 PM. Cost is $6 for adults, under 18 $3 and family (4+) is $15. See our flier for additional information.

What would October be without a Halloween dance. On October 21st, the Oaky Doaks will be having our Halloween Dance with Caller Janienne Alexander and Cuer Molly Combs. Costumes will be admired but are not required. If you do choose to attend in costume, please keep it family friendly. Pre-rounds start at 7:00 PM, Mainstream with rounds starts at 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM with Break at 9:30 PM. A Plus round will be done before the break if there are enough dancers.

Until month, be careful out there and we will see you across the square.

We have been enjoying dancing with our very talented guest callers . It was a very special treat to have Les Seeley back for a visit and calling for us . We miss him and Paula and it was so nice to see and visit with them again.

We enjoy welcoming guests to come dance with us and this past month we enjoyed a visitation from Tumbleweeds and Columbia River Dancers. A visitation from our club to visit those clubs is in our plans for fall and winter. We are looking forward to it.

August was also the time we have our annual club picnic on a beautiful piece of property beside a creek belonging to one of our members. We love going there and appreciate her having us each year.

September 10 marks the beginning of our club square dance lessons which are being taught by caller Craig Abercrombie. Our lessons will continue every Sunday from September 10 at 5:30 PM at our hall at Milwaukie Community center on 42nd and Jackson . Our club dances are at the same location every second and third Saturday. Remember .. we love having company and welcome all dancers. Come dance with us.

Watch for an article about him coming up soon in the National USDA magazine. We are honored to have him in our club. Coming up on October 27 will be our annual Halloween costume dance. Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Are we tired of the smoke yet? There were a couple of days when the smoke went the other way. The skies were blue and the sun shone. The temperatures were in the 80's. Thank COD for the respite, if only for a few days. More are coming.

Since this report is being written the middle of September, a report on the September 29 Council Dance would be very inaccurate. So, we will say, we are anticipating a good turnout for the dance on the 29th . Our Council dances have been doing well since we added Advanced dancing to the format. See you there and thanks for supporting OUR Council.

Now that new classes have started, PLEASE help your clubs by angeling. Angels are very important to the future of our Clubs because they are the impression the new dancers get of the CIUb. We need to help the newbies all we can.

Don't forget to support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley.

The next Council meeting will be October 2, 2017 at Denny's Restaurant on Biddle Road at 4:30pm.

There are still "Learn to Square Dance" t-shirts available. I have quite a few 2X's. We have found the t-shirts are a great conversation starter.

The Charlie's are glad to be back in the swing of things!! We had our first class for Beginner Square Dance Lessons on Sept 12th. We had 19 new students, who all seemed quite enthusiastic. It was nice to see all ages represented and we hope they all come back and bring their friends. There are two more classes open to new dancers. Chuck Simpkins is teaching our beginner's class, as well as the Mainstream workshop, and he did a great job.

We are looking forward to some wonderful dancing in October!! October 7th we will welcome guest caller Michael Kious and guest cuer Rikki Lobato. This will be our Mainstream & Plus dance, with pre-rounds at 730pm.

Mark your calendars for October 21st when the Charlie's will welcome National Caller & Cuer Scot & Erin Byars. We are so excited to have them in Grants Pass. Scot will call Advanced starting 6pm and Erin will be doing PreRounds at 730pm. We will have Alternating Mainstream & Plus tips from 8-1030pm. We would love to have lots of friends visit!! This is our Apple Harvest Dance and we will be having a bake sale - so bring your best goodies!!

We are planning a great party for our 50th Birthday Dance on December 2nd!! We have National caller Charlie Robertson to entertain us!! He is an exceptional caller, and if you have never danced to him - You don't want to miss this opportunity!!! We will also have the wonderful Steve(Valerie) Murphy over from Klamath Falls to provide some great rounds!

Rogue Squares - Link
The Rogue Squares started their classes on September 11, with Phil Ramey, (Phil Billy) teaching. We had 5 students on our first night of class with a promise of 4 — 6 more on the 18th. Since this is written after only 1 class, we cannot say for sure how many beginners we had. The first five (5) lessons are free and we are hoping for a great turnout. The people who attended the first lesson were very happy and agreed wholeheartedly to come back.

As most clubs know, we need angels to help with the class. The Rogue Squares have teamed up with the Star Promenaders to encourage angels to come out to help. We are not charging the angels for helping. We ARE issuing "punch" cards to the angels. They need to attend 8 classes and get the card "punched" and the "full" card will entitle them to get into a regular dance at either the Stars or the Rogue Squares free.

There are also tentative plans in the works to encourage the new dancers to come back. Stay tuned for updates in future Circulators.

Our next dance is October 20. It is the "Ghouls & Goblins are out if force" dance with Lawrence Johnstone calling and Mary Nutt cuing. Since it is a Halloween dance, there will be a couple of prizes for costumes if you decide to wear one.

Well I'm back. Hopefully this new computer will do all the things that I tell it do to and we will have a nice letter. Thank you Roberta for the nice letter last month. It was nice to have a new touch and delightful info.

Classes started with a bang last Thursday and we had a lively time. There were a good bunch of younger dancers and their parents. Lots of laughs and happy dancing. Other clubs had their classes start also and I heard the numbers of new dancers was a nice start. Hope to see all of you out to Angel with us and the Rogue Squares to earn Angel Points that will get you into our or their dances FREE!!!

Went last night to the Birthday Dance in Yreka for the Circle and Squares. We had three squares and many clubs and good prizes and plenty of balloons and tons and tons of fun. It is a fun to celebrate 63 years of being a square dance club.

Our Classes will continue on Thursday nights and Wayne will start his A-1/A-2 Classes on the first Wednesday in October, that's the 4th, at 6PM. It will be followed by a Workshop at 7:30PM. Come on out and join in the fun of learning A Level Dancing. You will laugh yourself silly...honest!!!

It has not been set yet (to my knowledge), but the class will probably have a Halloween Party and surely will have a Thanksgiving Party. And then there is Christmas and New Year's and Mid-Winter and our Birthday Dance and Pear Blossom and and and and Wow we are back to Diamond Lake!!! Sure can send a year hurrying by. Guess what I am trying to say is that there is a lot of busy hands needed to keep all of these activities shaking and baking and bringing in New Dancers and keeping the Current Dancers entertained. So join us and help out. There will be a clothing Sale in November and Work Parties inside and outside to maintain the hall we own and Decorating Parties to keep it seasonal and pretty. Sometimes we throw in food to go with the fun of helping and sometimes we just get to work and enjoy the results. Keep your ears and eyes open for times and dates as they become available. Coming to the club meetings on the second Thursday at 6PM of each month will surely help keep you in the loop. Since class follows this meeting it also lets you stay to Angel and earn Points. We sure would like to see you join us. Kinda a Welcome to our Organization.

The New Year’s Eve Dance will be on New Year's Eve with “New Year's” going down with the Time's Square Ball at 9PM Oregon time. Plan to be there we always have a good time. Wayne Weaver will be Calling and Bob Dingman will be cuing and this Dance is aimed at all Dancers. See you there!!

Also of interest they have started the road work on Table Rock so please be prepared for construction and road signs and stuff as you are coming in and out of our hall. So far there is no known plan to obscure our gate so there should be no closure of our activities due to this work. It will make the road wider and introduce sidewalks and add a traffic lite at Airport....so it will be to our betterment. It will also make it easy and convenient to get in and out of the new Costco just up the street.

Don't miss out on the Birthday/Anniversary party at our Mainstream Dance on October 14th. The Cake is a surprise and the Ice Cream is always delicious.

I probable forgot a bunch of things that I needed to tell you...so come to a meeting or a class or a dance and you will surely hear all that I missed.

Saint’s & Aint’s held summer dances with jamboree callers and cuers. This gave the new local callers a chance to practice their skills. They did great and the dances were well attended and lots of fun for all. A demo dance was held during the Coos Bay Blackberry Arts festival. Flyers regarding the benefits and availability of square dance in the area were handed out to the crowd. The club has gone dark for both dances in September. The first dance so members could attend Port Orford’s Labor Day Weekend, and the second due to multiple member’s absence. Another demo dance is to be held at a local medical clinics grand opening of their remodel. We will bring visitors into the squares to introduce the fun of square dance. We are hoping this will bring interested new dancers and so have delayed the start of fall lessons until the first Sunday in October.

There is no denying that the month of August was hot. That stopped us once because the Hazel Dell Grange does not have air-conditioning. The 26th was warm and the dancing was great. Our lessons have been going really well and some of the new dancers were there to try out what they have learned. Our lessons start the first Tuesday of each month so if you have someone who missed starting in September, no problem. Jim has round-dance instruction from 6-7 and beginning lessons starting at 7 and mainstream about 8:30.

Our October 14 dance will have Darrell Kalmbach calling and Julie Stout cueing. We will be dark on the 28th as we are planning a great time at the Seaside Sashay that weekend. We encourage everyone to go.

Keep in mind that our Turkey Burn-off will be coming up on the 25th of November with guest caller Dan Nordbye calling.

Did you know that nineteen states have declared the Square Dance as their official Dance?

Does the end of August signal the end of summer? Maybe not. The Hahn Barn dance on August 27 was cancelled due to hot weather. We can hope for better luck next year. At least we are not flooded by a hurricane, and we can attend the Oregon State Fair to see square dance presentations.

Our picnic at Noble Woods Park was postponed twice hoping for slightly cooler weather. Excellent food, prepared mostly by members, caused a good deal of overeating. Then we were expected to play beanbag baseball and people did join in the fun because we did not have to stand up the whole time; we rested in our camp chairs between turns at bat cheering our team on. If you hit the Home Run hole you had to “run” the bases. Judy provided us with some great photos. Thanks to everyone for making the picnic a success.

We rarely cancel our dance but we did this year for an even rarer event, a solar eclipse. I went to Summit, west of Corvallis, in order to enjoy totality which is awesome. We were joined by a van full of eclipse enthusiasts who had driven all the way from southern California to take photos. We had fun photographing the little crescent shadows that form as the sun reappears. Afterwards we adjourned to a coffee shop called Imagine, which has a neat name and great mochas.

After a very successful Plus Class earlier this year we are repeating our program starting at noon, Monday February 5th, running into May. If you are thinking about learning or brushing up on Plus be ready to join us. We will have the same three great callers giving the lessons: Daryl Clendenin, Jim Hattrick, and Darrell Kalmbach.

We will be in Seaside for our beach trip this year, October 4th - 6th, which is later than usual but Kay Rogers found a good place for us.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

When we had our picnic last month, we had a discussion on when we wanted to dance. So here is the answer. We will dance on the 1st Friday of every month at the Astoria Senior Center. The address is: 1111 Exchange St. The time is from 6 to 8. Then on the 3rd Friday of the month, we will dance at the Pacific Grange. The time is also 6 to 8. We have to do this as the Grange is being used at that time and this is a simple solution. You still need you to call to make sure we have enough people for the dance.

Remember to join us at the Seaside Sashay, October 27th and 28th, in Seaside Oregon. The dance features Dan Preedy and Darrell Kalmbach calling with Debbie Taylor cueing. A fun and eventful weekend with dancing on the turnaround, weather permitting. Also, do not forget the mud wrestling competition!

To say the month of August was a warm one was an understatement! Luckily the Hoedowners were completely prepared with several summer activities. We had so much fun on August 7th at our annual Hoedowner Hop’s Night! The weather was lovely, the coppery sun was setting in the smoky haze and an amazing group of people were having fun. Who could ask for more? Well, perhaps the Hops could have won but 16 runs were knocked in, unfortunately the majority were for Vancouver. It was one of those get togethers where you just have time to visit, catch up, laugh a lot and relax together.

On the 12th of August we had our “Here’s the Scoop Dance” with guest caller Mike Stout and joining our own Randy Lewis calling was Julie Stout. Thanks to all the Sunset Promenaders who joined us for our ice cream sundaes. Sundaes are always popular but never more than when the temperature is warm.

We were prepared for the 93 degree weather on the 26th for our “Cool and Sweet Dance” featuring fruit and melons. We just have to remember the George R.R. Martin quote, “Summer will end soon enough.”

We were very disappointed that the Hahn Barn Dance had to be cancelled on the 27th. It is such a unique dance but dancing in the hay loft with the temperature at 97 would have been a challenge. We’re waiting to hear when it will be rescheduled.

Summer will fade into fall so we’re hoping we’ll see you on October 14th for our “Oktoberfest Dance”. We’ll be serving German foods which will melt the frost on your pumpkin.

We’re going dark on October 28th for the Seaside Sashay. Hope we see across the Square at the Seaside Convention Center!

Big 33 this year. Yup, our 33rd Birthday Dance is coming up October 21. While the actual date is the first Saturday in November, we shift it to October to avoid Royal Romp. As always, Lindie will have her containers of M&Ms for people to guess the number in each container. The mathematicians try to calculate and often come very close. Come see if you can out-calculate them.

As this is being written we don't have further word as to when Jeanine Norden will be back with us. We hope that she will be healed and healthy by the time you read this. At this point she needs to concentrate on getting well. We miss her and wish her a speedy and complete recovery.

On Saturday August 19th the Club met at Pat and Glenn Faires' lake home for our annual pot luck and monthly meeting. The sun was shining on the lake, it was a beautiful afternoon.

Our last dance of the summer was this past week, with a rousing 5 1/2 squares. It was our back to school dance. Nearly $300 of school supplies were donated to be given to a local area school.

October and our annual Octoberfest will be upon us soon. This event will be held at the Rose Valley Grange October 13th to 15th. This is the second weekend in October a change from previous years. Work is underway to improve the acoustics.

Lessons start on October 18th. Plus lessons will begin at 6:30 PM and beginning class will start at 7:30PM

Hope to see you all in a square real soon.

One of the warmest summers I can remember, but it was a great one. We have been busy as a club. Our campout was held down in Lincoln City, tremendous weather with lots to do. Our club is a great one to have fun with. Next year we are going to Vernonia to camp.

Lessons started September 13th. Fun group of newcomers. Lessons are being held at the Kinton Grange. Thanks KC and Linda for all of your work. Bev and Harlan will start Round Dance lessons in January.

Our Anniversary Dance September 15th will be a blast. The Wildcards will give us a fun evening as our callers, with our own Bev Flint and Dave Cooper cueing. The next night Toes will host the State Dance, with KC calling and Bev cueing. We are so proud of our own Kathy Roberts stepping into the state president position. Thanks to everyone stepping up and helping us to have a grand weekend of dancing.

We are looking forward to our Dance for the Cure on October 1st. Be sure to wear pink and come for fun. All donations collected will be given to Breast Cancer Research at OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. This is our 10th Man Enough To Wear Pink Dance…. Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30 pm at the Kinton Grange. A variety of baskets will be raffled during the dance. We hope to see you there.

October 6th is our P J’s dance. Come and wear your favorite PJ’s. On October 20th our dance will be held at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall. It is our Spooktacular Dance so come wearing your favorite costume.

Please come and support our Kinton Grange on October 29th for their Fall Feast from noon to 4 p.m. They will be serving sausage and kraut with German potato salad, green beans, applesauce, rolls and dessert. $15 per dinner for adults, $5 for kids 4 to 12 and under 4 free. Folks can dine in or get take out. Come on down and enjoy a great meal with us.

Tri Squares was dark in July and August, but we scheduled visitations to clubs with air conditioning and had a great time. On Friday, September 22nd, we're having our 19th Anniversary Dance, with national caller Adam Christman, and hope everybody comes. (Surely it will be cooler by then?!) Then on Sunday, September 24th, we begin B-51 lessons for 10 weeks -- the first two are free -- from 3:30-5:30.

On Sunday, October 8th, we’ll start Mainstream Workshops at 2:00; open to all square dancers for $3 a visit. You could even spend the whole afternoon with us as angels for the B-51 lessons which follow. And please join us for our October dances on the 14th and 27th, celebrating cool autumn, crisp apples, and Halloween.

Valley Squares is dark the first Saturday of October to attend Sunset Promenaders Anniversary Dance.

Don those Halloween costumes early and join us for our Halloween Dance October 21st. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling with Connie Clark cueing.

We were "tickled" by Scott Zinser's sense of humor at our 1st Saturday dance in August, and root beer floats were a welcome treat from the heat at our third Saturday gala, called by Craig Abercrombie.

Smoky skies meant some members enjoyed our picnic inside Southminster Presbyterian Church while others stayed outside to play croquet and dine under the trees.

Our August visitation was cancelled.

The heat has finally begun to subside, and fall is beginning to show its beautiful colors here in the Umpqua Valley. As with many other spots in Oregon, we have had our share of smoke and ash from the wild fires. Hopefully things will clear up as the fall progresses and we get some long awaited rain!

Our first dance of the month was our Red, White, and Blue Dance. We had guest caller Dale Roberson call for us, and Rikki Lobato cued for the round dancers. We had a nice turnout and everyone had a great time! Dale brings lots of energy and years of experience with him….in fact, he used to be our regular club caller before he retired. We always enjoy having him back in the barn!

Our second dance was our Pacific Islander/Polynesian Dance. It is always fun to dance to an island theme when the fall has brought cooler weather and rain. Chuck Simpkins called the squares and Neil Koozer cued the rounds.

The Buckeroos began a new set of lessons this month. We had a good number of students show up and are excited to see the energy in the group. We are already looking forward to dancing with them at Mid-Winter! Speaking of Mid-Winter, we will have Buckeroo Round-Up ribbons for sale, so do not forget to find us and get yours! Scot Byers will be the featured caller this year, and his wife Erin will be the cuer.

We have another big event coming up on November 4th…a special celebration dance to honor Dale Roberson and his 50 plus years of calling! Watch the OFN for the upcoming flyer and plan to join us. You will be glad you made the drive!

Remember… we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
