Oregon Federation News
December 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 December 2017
President's Corner

For our new dancers who started lessons in September, December opens the doors to many new and exciting dancing opportunities in the form of jamborees or new dancer dances. If your club has a class that started in September, now is a good time to suggest that your students register for the OFN. Encourage your students to attend not only your own jamboree, but other clubs’ jamborees. If your students are nervous about attending other jamborees, angels might offer to attend the jamborees with their students or pick their students up and drive them to the jamborees. Consider meeting for lunch or dinner before the jamboree and go as a group. Not only does this build a positive relationship within your club, but it helps to alleviate any fears your students may have.

If you are a new dancer, this paragraph is for you  If you are ready to try attending a jamboree on your own, look at the flyers in this month’s OFN. There are jamborees throughout the state almost every weekend this month. Talk to your caller/teacher to find out what level you are currently dancing at. There are 68 moves in the Mainstream Program, and your level is determined by how many moves you know. If you see a flyer with a B51 level, that means the dance will be called at Basic Level 51 which includes the first 51 moves in the Mainstream Program. When looking for a jamboree to attend, be sure you can dance up to the level being called. If you are currently dancing at a lower level, please look for a different jamboree. If in doubt, remember to ask your caller/teacher. Be brave and visit other clubs’s jamborees. The other dancers are not strangers, they are just new friends waiting to greet you and dance with you.

Hope your holidays are safe and happy.
Merry Christmas
Kathy Roberts
OFSRDC President

Our next scheduled dance is December 30, but we will not have a dance because New Year's Eve is the following day. Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli will offer a New Year's Eve dance on December 31st for $2.50 which was the entrance for dances back in the early 80's. Dancers are encouraged to bring a pie.

Our first scheduled dance for 2018 is March 31st. That is the Emerald Area Benefit Dance. The beneficiary will be Honor Flight. We've had several dancers in our area take advantage of this opportunity to thank a veteran. Several dancers have accompanied their fathers and other honorees to Washington D.C. CCCA callers and cuers offer their talents for this event if asked. The area is in charge of this particular dance. It's an important and special dance we all look forward to each year. And, because so many of us personally know veterans and families who have attended Honor Flight or who are eligible, makes it even more special.

We are sorry to report that Janet Geiger's dad passed away after coming back to Oregon from Florida where they just missed the big hurricane, Irma. Janet had been living with her dad in Florida taking great care of him. Her dad's siblings are Joy Pitts and Melba Walker. We offer our condolences to Clarence's family. Janet is again working on her calling skills. She was in Roger Putzler's calling class and works at it. We can't wait to dance to her calling.

Kirby Goode remains on 'in home' hospice care. Christina and their caregiver, Jake Westra, look after Kirby and attend to his every need. The Peace Health hospice team is not only present often during the week but also on call any time of day or night. The team is made up of caring, competent and very special people who work hard to make and keep Kirby comfortable. We all enjoy each and every one of these fine folks.

Hope to see you all at the March 31st dance. Our next future CCCA dance isn't until June 30, 2018.

See you in a square,

Christina Corelli

Member and Secretary of Cascade Callers and Cuers Association (CCCA)

Our Oct. 13th dance with Jim Hattrick and Jackie Gale was well attended.Seeing all the round dancers on the floor reminded me of when Pat Hintz was our cuer and dancers filled the floor. Jackie is doing a great job as well. We always enjoy Jim’s calling and are so fortunate to have him come down all the way from Vancouver WA. Jim, you make people happy to be dancing and we love all your jokes and stories too.

Our Halloween Bash on Friday, Oct. 27th had a number of zany costumes, ranging from a weirwolf to a leopardess. Our treasurer, Joy Pitts, always comes up with fun and often quite crazy ideas. She did a great job of decorating the hall with some very unusual witches and Halloween decor. Prizes were awarded to the top contenders—Joy Pitts, Paul McAnelly, and both Vonda Clayton and Lori Stern (who tied for third place). K.C. Curtis drove all the way down from Seaside to call for us that evening. What a wonderful repertoire of songs he had on hand. He introduced a new one sung by Tom Jones originally—super, super special. Jackie once more had a crowded round dance floor.

We are looking forward to our Christmas dinner and dance on Dec. 8th with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing. If you are in town be sure to come join us at 6:30 pm for the potluck dinner (and bring something to nosh on) and 7:30 pm for the dance. This will be the only Single Trees dance in December as we are dark for Christmas weekend.

By the time you read this, our special dance with Kris Jensen will be history. Boy, oh, boy what an event. Dancing, potluck and silent auction. We always enjoy having Kris in Eugene to call for us. Our regular caller, Tim Matteson, has a chance to dance too. The last time Kris was in Eugene she called a demo dance at Sheldon Oaks where her and Kurt's mom resides. One of the residents came back to dancing after a several year hiatus. I think it's kind of like riding a bicycle. It comes back to you how to do it. We are happy to have Beverly back to dancing and dancing with us. We dance almost every Sunday evening from 5:30 - 8:00 Double check the When and Where in the OFN.

Kirby Goode misses coming to our dances. We miss him too. Kirby remains on 'in home' hospice care.

Happy dancing,

Christina Corelli, Member-At-Large

Despite the wet weather we had another good dance at our new hall, the Palmer Creek Lodge.

The Holiday season is upon us and we look forward to celebrating with family and friends but also want to share with those who are less fortunate. Our November Dance benefited St. Barnabus' Soup Kitchen in McMinnville. It’s also time to be thankful for all our blessings. Square dancing and the great friends we have because of it are at the top of our list for sure. Stay safe out there as the weather changes. Carmen

With our Demo season behind us, the Cherry City Cloggers don't have a lot a anything really outstanding to report.

We are continuing to bring along a small beginner class which will be graduating the week after Christmas. Halloween just happened to fall on our dance night this year, so several club members came in costume, which is always fun. We are looking forward to Mid-Winter and being able to dance with National Cuers Russ and Leila Hunsaker.

We will probably have our semi-annual meeting sometime in January with the election and appointment of officers. Until then, we wish you all a very blessed and happy holiday season. Georganne Pfnister

We had a festive and well-attended Halloween Dance on October 28. Thanks to all who came out for a fun evening.

Our mainstream lessons have combined with the Albany Timber Twirlers', and our students are continuing to learn under Bruce and Judy's excellent guidance. We look forward to the start of the Area New Dancers' Dances.

We were dark in November in order to be able to attend other dances, so are excited about December when we're holding our Christmas Dance. We're looking forward to dancing in the New Year! Wishing Happy Holidays to all! Karen

The IWW Mainstream students are doing great at our Sunday afternoon lessons, with a committed group of angels sharing in the fun (Many thanks, angels!). Following mainstream lessons, a small but enthusiastic group is brushing up on Plus dancing and working toward DBD expertise.

Our dances continue to be well attended and loads of fun. Our November 4 dance was a high point of the year so far, with 44 visitors! (It was wonderful to have the visitors with their enthusiasm and spirit. Y’all come back real soon, y’hear!) Later in the month, we honored all veterans with our Veterans’ Day dance.

Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall, and be sure to put our December 9 Rocky Mountain Christmas special dance on your calendar. See the Flyer on the OFN web site. Have a wonderful holiday season. Dee and Bert Mackaman

In October the Lebanon Square Circlers had two great dances, including the Black Light dance. Our caller was Charlotte Jeskey and our cuer was Jackie Gale. We also helped Corvallis Squares celebrate Halloween.

On November 4, the Lebanon club traveled to the Independence Wagon Wheelers and we had a great time. On the November 11, we plan to celebrate with the Sweet Home Squarenaders and enjoy the Turkey Dinner Dance with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Then we have a regular dance on November 18.

The first Saturday in December will be our New Dancers Dance and our Toy Dance. If you bring an unwrapped toy, you can get into the dance for $3.00. The toys go to our local fire department for the annual Christmas toy drive.

Our lessons are going great each Sunday evening. See you in a square! Marilyn York

The club continues on with intermediate waltz lessons. Each week is a review of the week before and more steps in variations added. Then more music is added to work on practicing the new steps. The class is a good one and we will continue until about Mid-Winter before switching rhythms.

We are dancing on New Year’s Eve with Cheryl Manley and Ken Pratt sharing the cueing duties so both can dance during the evening. For $8, you can dance, eat, share friendship with others, and just sit and relax and dance a favorite song.

We are not dancing on Thanksgiving for those of you who read the OFN right after it comes out. There are many dances over the weekend to dance off the food you ate on that Thursday. Enjoy the time with family, both personal and square dance. The holidays are a good time to get the Christmas attire out of the closet, make sure it is clean, and then show the world how wonderful you look and share the specialness of the season. Merry Christmas to all our friends on and off the dance floor, Marilyn Schmit

Willamette Squares - Link
Willamette Squares was in a celebratory mood for the month of October. It happened to be our birthday month, and we had a well attended birthday/Halloween dance! Many dancers came in costume, and of course, there was a beautifully decorated birthday cake among the array of food items. It was such a fun dance of both square dancing and rounds!

Guests of honor were Brice and Nancy Baker, who after years of membership in Willamette Squares are no longer going to be square dancing. They have played an integral part in what Willamette Squares is today. Not only have they been active in square dancing, but they have been gracious host and hostess for more lessons than we can count. Nancy with her excellent culinary skills has graced our food table with more than her share of goodies, and her reputation for our annual Thanksgiving feast has been widespread. Brice has walked miles hauling in from their motorhome/van dishes and decorations galore which then needed to be brought back out for the trip home. They both have been instrumental in transforming our space into a Christmas wonderland as they brought another load of decorations and food. Brice has brought his camera and through his photographs has made memorable so many of our fun times. This couple, although no longer physically dancing, will always remain a part of Willamette Squares.

Our club honored them at Nancy and Gary Ohren's home with a special send off. There was a meal, to which, for once, Nancy did not have to contribute anything, and entertainment which consisted of two solos by Shari and a group sing-along led by Jodee and her ukulele, Steve, Gary, and Nancy O. Nancy spoke on behalf of Brice and her, and the heartfelt love and appreciation for Nancy and Brice was shared by all.

Lessons are progressing nicely. The new dancers will undoubtedly be enjoying the number of new dancer dances that will be in full swing. It is fun to share our love of square dancing with them as they become ready to graduate from formal lessons to actual dances where they can put into practice what they've learned.

Willamette Squares will not be meeting at our regular time during the month of January but will be resuming our regular schedule after Mid-Winter.

Willamette Squares offers a special ticket as a raffle prize for a free entry into the Salem Square Dance Center for one of our dances. Those tickets need to be returned, as we had none to pass out at our last dance. If you happen to have one, would you please bring it back to our next dance or see that one of our members gets it to replenish our supply? Thank you. Jodee Howard

December will be full of special dances for us; every week will be themed. Dec. 6 will be our pajama dance. (I’ll still find a way to flounce my ruffles.). Dec 13, our famous Basket Raffle. Our Christmas Dance on Dec 20, and our Pre-Pre-Pre-Pre New Year’s Eve dance to get you warmed up for the new year. (Of course some will be warmed up when they see me at the Pajama Dance.) Be kind to us ladies; our bouncers Bruce Bruiser and Strong-Arms Armstrong will be on duty.

A special note for Dec 13. Besides being our Basket Raffle Dance, this will also be our New Dancer Jamboree. This is a big to-do because all the other clubs have their jamborees on Sundays, for whatever reason. This is a nice alternative for a Wednesday evening. At a minimum, the dance will be a B-51, and maybe higher. Jim Hattrick calling and cueing.

Why not give yourself a treat and join the B&B’s? For only $12, and the price of a badge, you will get a year and three month’s membership and several free dances a year. – A great bargain! Ask for the membership applications at the front desk.

There is a chill in the air and shorter days that tell us Christmas is just around the corner! We start out December with our first Saturday dance on the 2nd with Darrell Kalmbach and Julie Stiers at 7:00 PM. On December 3rd, we will be having a new student Jamboree at the Boring Barn from 1:30 to 4:00 PM with Scott Zinser calling. The Cut-Ups will have their annual Christmas Party and gift exchange on December 9th for the club members and current mainstream students. We have a great class going fall.

Our 4th Saturday dance will be a Pre-Christmas Eve dance on December 23rd, so get your shopping done early, so you can join us! Our 5th Saturday dance will be a Pre-New Year's Eve event with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. If you don't like to be out on New Year's Eve, then join us the night before and celebrate early! Or go to two parties, back to back and dance the new year in! We will be dark on New Year's Eve this year, but there are plenty of good dances around.

Consider joining the Country Cut-Ups in 2018. The dues are $60 per person and that gets you into two dances per month. Such a deal! It lets you dance at about half the regular price. Membership is up, so door and kitchen duty is reasonable. We are the most fun club around these parts, of course, I may be biased! But after all, we are the Cut-Ups!

Happy Hoppers - Link
Although the Happy Hoppers were dark for our first dance in November, we’re really looking forward to our November 18th dance, our “Pies and Presents” dance. In addition to the scrumptious pies we’ll be enjoying at our break, we will be collecting toys and gifts appropriate for children who are served by The Children’s Center, a nonprofit organization which provides mental health services for children in need. We will also collect gifts at our December 2nd dance. The Center has always truly appreciated the tremendous generosity of our members and guests.

Plans are under way for our New Year’s Eve dance. It’s one of the two really special dances we do each year, and this year will be no exception. The theme is “Come Sail Away.” Once again we will be featuring the Front Porch Trio: Jim Hattrick, Craig Abercrombie, and Adam Christman. The decorations and the food are always outstanding, so check out our flyers and get ready to purchase your tickets for an event you won’t want to miss.

Speaking of special events, we want to share what a great time our Hoppers had at a couple of local events in October. At the R Square D’s October Fest not only were the squares and rounds a lot of fun, but the Saturday night German dinner was outstanding. What a terrific job their club did! Another special weekend attended by 25 of our members was the Seaside Sashay. The weather was perfect for dancing at the Turnaround. The callers and cuer made the day and evening dances energizing, sometimes challenging, and just plain fun! The Hayshakers and Sunset Promenaders deserve a big “Thank you,” for all the work they did to provide a wonderful weekend for dancers.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Come join the Oaky Doaks as we celebrate this festive season. December looks to be a very busy month for the Oaky Doaks.

On Saturday, December 2nd, we will be having our “Christmas Whimsy Dance”! Everyone is asked to bring their favorite Christmas Cooke to share at our break. Caller Janienne Alexander and Cuer Molly Combs will be doing semi gospel as they only can. Pre-Rounds start at 7:00. Mainstream with Rounds will start at 7:30. Break and the sharing of the cookies will start at 9:30.

On Sunday, December 10th, we will be gathering together for the annual Oaky Doaks Christmas Party and Potluck. After all the dinning is done there will be the entertainment of the gift exchange for those who wish to participate. But of course, the best things from the event are the time spent with one another and holiday spirit that is shared amongst us.

We wrap up December with our fourth Saturday dance on December 16th with our “Christmas Traditions Dance”. Come share your traditions with us as we gather to Caller Janienne Alexander and Cuer Molly Combs in Christmas carols.

Rudolph sent me an email saying that if everyone who attends the dance is on the good list that Santa may come and visit for a square or two. Pre-Rounds start at 7:00. Mainstream with Rounds will start at 7:30. Break and the sharing of the cookies will start at 9:30.

From the Oaky Doaks to all. May this Holiday Season mark another period of joy, peace and love in your life. May your lives be filled with more victories and blessings. May you have a Merry Christmas with a Happy and Safe New Year.

See you on the dance floor!

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

PLEASE help your clubs by angeling the new dancer classes. Angels are very important to the future of our clubs because they are the impression the new dancers get of the club. We need to help the newbies all we can.

At our last meeting, it was decided not to have a "Fifth Friday" dance in December. We do not want to take anything away from the Star's New Year's Eve dance. It is very important for clubs to respect functions of other clubs in their Council, especially when all the clubs in our Council are struggling.

We will revisit the first Tuesday meeting schedule on April and see how it is going. We will keep you posted.

Don't forget to support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley.

The next Council meeting will be December 5, 2017 at Denny's Restaurant on Biddle Road at 4:30pm.

There are still "Learn to Square Dance" t-shirts available. I have quite a few 2X's. We have found the t-shirts are a great conversation starter.

The Charlie's enjoyed a wonderful dance with Scot & Erin Byars on October 21st. This was their first time at the Charlie's - and everyone had a blast. We even did a petti-pant dance, since Scot's chicken has gone missing...

The first dance in Nov was a small but happy crowd, and everyone enjoyed the talents of Phil-Billy & Elaine.

Our 3rd Sat dance in November, on the 18th, is a "traveling" dance and the Charlie's are heading up to Roseburg to enjoy dancing to Mike Sikorsky. We had a wonderful Advanced Workshop with Richard Lane on Nov 16th. I know there are Charlie's planning to attend his dance at the Rogues on the 17th, he is a great caller.

Classes are going well with about 9 students, followed by a fun Mainstream Workshop. We are weaving our way thru the Advanced DVDs and the small class is really enjoying themselves on Thursdays. We appreciate the more experienced Advanced dancers who have graciously agreed to fill in the squares as needed!!!

December is an exciting month!!! Saturday December 2nd, we celebrate our 50th birthday!!! The wonderfully talented Charlie Robertson from LA area will be calling the dance & Steve Murphy will be cueing. Advanced starts at 600; pre-rounds at 730 and MS/Plus from 8-1030. There will probably be a post dance thrown in as well as some cake. We will also have door prizes & raffle items. You don't want to miss this wonderful celebration.

The 3rd Saturday December 16, is our Chocolate Christmas Affair with Chuck Simpkins & Bob Dingman calling & cueing. Should be a real treat and I am sure there will be lots of chocolate!

We are looking forward to many events coming up at the Charlie's as well as other clubs in the area.

Hope to see you in a square.

Safe travels & happiest of holidays to you & your families!!

The Rogue Squares classes are still going great. We have 5 students on a regular basis and a couple who live in Alaska and come to the classes for 2 weeks at a time and then are back in Alaska for 2 weeks. The people who are attending, are having a great time.

The "Angel Cards" are a huge success. We have several Angels who attend both the Rogue Squares and the Star Promenaders classes, so they already have full cards and have redeemed their cards at a regular dance for free. Good going guys, and Thank You.

The Rogue Squares are cooking up something for the New Year. Take a look at the January flyer. It was called to our attention, that some students are not able, for religious reasons, to attend the Caller & Cuer Sunday dances. So, we are sponsoring a new student dance on January 12 to encourage these new dancers to participate at something other than classes. All clubs are invited to bring their class to this dance. Phil Ramey will be the caller and Elaine Funk will cue the rounds. There won't be any Advanced dancing at this dance and the donation is reduced to $5.00 for this one time only.

Does every year go by as quickly as this one? I sure hope the rest of mine go by much less quickly.

So here's to a great 2018..................

The Thanksgiving Dinner was very enjoyable and sure hope the Christmas Dinner is as good and is as well attended. Bring something good to eat and enjoy the dinner and class on December 21.

And of course New Year's Eve will be celebrated as usual with our New Year's Eve Dance and meal.

Dress up and come celebrate the New Year with us. Wayne Weaver will be calling and Bob Dingman will be cuing. Midnight will be celebrated in co-ordination with New York's Time Square. See you there!

Also in December will be a Midwinter Dance by the callers and cuers. See the flier for all the details.

Our Birthday Dance will be in February as usual. The caller will be Lawrence Johnstone and the cuing will be provided by Rikki Lobato.

Many of you probably have heard that Wayne Weaver is retiring. Well, it's true. There is to be a retirement party August 11. More information as it occurs. He will surely be missed.

Come to a class or a dance and join us in a good evening's fun

See you next year............

Wow! We had a great turnout for the Seaside Sashay. The club was dark on October 28th as we encouraged everyone to go to that dance. We enticed them with free pizza and soft drinks at a local pizza house near the convention center. Twenty-three members, along with two guest callers and their taws were there. It was a great time of talking, eating and getting to know one another. Oh yeah, the dancing was great both Friday and Saturday. Even with her sore knee and new hip my wife had over 16,000 steps on her pedometer just on Saturday. It is fun to dance with people that you normally don't see. We danced with folks from as far away as Walla Walla and Spokane.

Now, on to December dancing. First is a reminder that Christmas is coming so it is okay to give hints to what you would like to have in your stocking. By the 9th of December everyone will be needing a break from getting ready for the holidays. Mike Stout will be calling and Julie Stout cueing. They assured us they will keep your spirits happy and bright.

Shopping should be done by the 23rd, with gifts wrapped and stockings hung. We WILL have a dance on the 23rd with our own Jim Hattrick calling and cueing. If you have never seen Jim's Christmas get-up it is worth the price of admission. Plus that we all know how great a caller he is.

Lastly, from all of the Columbia River Dancers, Have very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas seem to pile on top of one another especially when shopping. I have to check my calendar to make sure of the date. I had some imaginative costumed children at my door this year and I hope you did too.

Give yourself a pat on the back if you made the effort to vote. We are so lucky to have a mail in ballot so we have time to consider how to vote and do not have to stand in line.

Remember to give some thanks to the people who manage our clubs, our fantastic callers and cuers, and the friends who make dancing so much fun that you do not even realize you are exercising.

The new location for our beach trip, Seaside, was a good choice for our group as there are many activities besides walking on the sand. Naturally, we had plenty of food, games, and talk so we had a good time. About twenty eight members attended. The weather was wonderful, sunny and warm.

Twenty one members celebrated the Sunset Promenader’s anniversary dance. We have been trying to attend as many anniversary dances as we can because it is important to support the clubs.

We had a good turnout of members at Seaside Sashay. Everyone had a good time. Again the weather did not disappoint. Dancing on the turnaround was especially nice this year being sunny and warm. The callers were great and included our own Darrell Kalmbach. Wonderful weekend.

After a very successful Plus Class earlier this year we are repeating our program starting at noon, February 5th, Monday, running into May. If you are thinking about learning or brushing up on Plus be ready to join us. We will have the same three great callers giving the lessons: Daryl Clendenin, Jim Hattrick, and Darrell Kalmbach. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

Hoedowners - Link
Why does the beginning of each new month come as such a shock? I guess for square dancers who love dancing at weekend dances, Angeling at lessons during the week and working to make our hobby a fun and engaging activity, the days are so full that time never lags. We’re just trying to find enough time to fit it all in!

On October 14th Hoedowners held our Octoberfest Dance. A polka always highlights a square dance but the most interesting comment at the end of the evening was “The plates were too small”. The Hoedowner cooks outdid themselves and we promise we’ll have the big, heavy duty plates next year so participants can truly load up on the German inspired offerings.

October 18th was our Do Si Do Donut Night at new dancer lessons. Angels and new dancers alike enjoyed the assorted pastries. This vibrant class of 20 knows how to put away those carbs with an assist from our Angels. Do carbs help or hinder learning? Science can’t decide but this group is learning at a speedy pace.

The Seaside Sashay was held October 27th and 28th so Hoedowners went dark. Could late October weather be any better? The high reached 75 degrees on Friday afternoon and Saturday skies were a brilliant blue. Dancing at the turnaround, dancing at the outlet malls, perusing the craft fair, cruising through businesses in town getting stamps for the “passports”, it was a marvelous day. Saturday evening the Hoedowners planned to meet for dinner and dag nab it the restaurant was closed because of computer issues. Couldn’t even call and warn us because reservations are stored on the computer. Clay and Kelly McCaw were the first arrivals to find the sign in the window, they gave me a quick call, so I rang Finn’s Fish House and we were in business 15 minutes later. What a great crew to rearrange their dining room to accommodate the 13 Hoedowners on such short notice. Great food, great staff and I’m sure we’ll be back. Doug Morgan won the drawing for the evening’s Grand Prize and was darn glad he got all those business stamps. Our own Ferrous Steinka won the Men’s Mud Wrestling Contest. Now I’m not one for gossip but there were several rumors floating around the dance floor about collusion and bribery on the professional mud wrestling circuit but we’re confident it hasn’t spread to these local events. When asked, Ferrous is mum on the issue.

What’s Up? On December 9th we’ll hold our Spirit of Giving Dance. Holiday music and all the donated toys left under the tree will be delivered to needy kids.

Sunday December 10th, is our New Dancer Jamboree 1:30-3:30 pm. We invite you to spread your holiday spirit and introduce new dancers to what a real square dance is like.

December 23rd is our Christmas Dance. We invite you to put your holiday preparation on pause and join us for an evening of holiday music, holiday lights, the small of fresh greenery and a cookie or two.

The Hoedowners want to wish everyone the best of the holiday season and a remarkable 2018.

It was a dark and stormy night outside. Inside Winona Grange things couldn't have been brighter for our 33rd Birthday Dance celebration, which was quite a success, complete with visitations, Randy's calling, Dennis's cuing, and chocolate cake with ice cream. Of course, Lindie had her usual "Guess how many M&Ms are in a jar" contest. While Randy came closest on all three guesses, he was allowed only one prize.

Randy called mainstream to welcome all who came. He makes mainstream so much fun that you don't notice what level it is. People who had just finished their mainstream classes danced every tip with smiles on their faces.

We saw regulars, people that we hadn't seen for a long time, TVC officers, and some dancers we hadn't met before. We welcomed them all, including visitations from the Country Cut-Ups (Tualatin is a long way from the Boring Barn) and Toe Draggers.

Have you been stocking up on foods for our annual Canned Food Dance December 16th? We are looking forward to filling the barrels for the Oregon Food Bank.

Another successful Octoberfest!! We had 10 plus squares in attendance Saturday night. The work that the club did to improve the acoustics worked even better than anticipated. Saturday morning garage saleing was, as always, a big success for the out of towners, (home towners too). Thank you to Lynn Waliezer and everyone who helped make this dance a success. We are already working to make Octoberfest 2018 even bigger and better.

On October 28th we had our annual Halloween Dance. Cougars and R Square D made up the 2+ squares attending.

R Square D started lessons on the 18th. All is going well. We have some new faces, and some who have tried dancing before have come back, as always we need angels.

December dances will be Friday December 8th, that will be our annual Toy Dance. Members will bring a toy to be donated to the Salvation Army toy drive. We will be dark on the 23rd. MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone.

For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

We had a great Sunset Promenaders 32nd Anniversary Dance with over 100 dancers, a full dance floor. We had a wonderful ham dinner before the dance, and then open desserts during the dance. The dance featured Mike Stout and Darrell Kalmbach calling with Ken Pratt and Julie Stout cueing. It was great dance, thank you to all of the visitors, we appreciate you coming out and helping us celebrate. It was great to visit with all our friends we don’t get to see often enough and great to have a full dance floor, too.

The Seaside Sashay was a lot of fun this year with fantastic weather; sun and no wind. We had Darrell Kalmbach and Dan Preedy calling and Debbie Taylor cueing. This crew did an outstanding job of entertaining and exercising us. Cynthia Weber did a great job on the decorating of the Convention Center. On Saturday morning we danced at the Turnaround and that is special especially when the weather is so great. We are looking forward to going again next year. Of course we had the mud wrestling completion at 5:30 on Saturday morning; that is a long tradition of the Sashay. If you missed this Sashay, be sure to look for and come to it next year; it will be on October 26th and 27th in 2018.

December 2nd and 16th we are having Christmas theme Mainstream Dances with Mike Stout calling and Ken Pratt cueing at our Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall.

Also, we are having a food drive the months of November and December; we collect the food and give it to the Food Bank for our less fortunate neighbors. What we collect is non-perishable food with good protein such as canned food, beans, rice, nuts, etc.

The Plus Promenaders dances are on Thursdays the 7th and 21st in December with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Ken Pratt Cueing. Please check out our new website at www.sunsetpromenaders.com

The holidays are under way and we are participating fully. I wanted to share how you helped us reach a goal for the Pink Dance donations. We have collected more than last year. Yea for the square dance community for coming together for cancer research. $1749 for 2017 Dance for the Cure. We also worked hard as a club to help the Kinton Grange with their Fall Dinner Festival. I have never seen so many pieces of delicious pie pass through my hands with only eating just one piece.

November started out with our Boot Scootin Boogie Dance wearing our best western attire. Fun evening. It’s being followed with our Thankful Dance on the 17th. Hope to remind everyone that in November and December we are collecting canned food for our food drive to help folks in need this winter. November 26th the Toes are gathering at the grange to help decorate the hall for Christmas, then head out to eat together at a favorite restaurant.

Let’s see December 1st is our We Wreath You a Merry Christmas Dance, following up with a fun New Dancer’s Jamboree on December 3rd. Come join us with your new students. December 15th is our holiday Blessing Dance, then just the Toes will gather on December 28th for a game night and pot luck at the grange. Our Round Dance lessons begin January 7th, with Bev and Harlan Flint on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. They will be teaching 2 Step and Waltz. Check our club flyers and website for full information.

Looking forward to seeing you in the New Year on Jan. 5th and the 19th for our regular dances. See you in a square.

In October four of our 14 students who had some previous experience decided to go ahead and join our club, and they’ve continued on at lessons to keep brushing up, too. The great support from our angels has gone a long way towards increasing membership like this.

November 4th we planned a dance-demo at the Tigard Grange to help celebrate the Oregon Grange’s 150th anniversary, with help from caller K.C. Curtis and some members of the Toe Draggers Club.

On November 12th we had our new dancers jamboree, and then we took our students to Chaps & Petticoats jamboree on the 19th. We’ve been doing this happy “student-exchange” the last few years with great success.

On November 25th we were dark, due to two big area dances with national callers on that same day. Just too tempting to go see them!

December 3rd we’ll have our club’s annual holiday dinner, this time at Yen’s Chinese Restaurant in Tigard, in a nice side room with no extra charge. And it’s always fun to do the crazy white elephant gift exchange, with some particularly goofy gifts showing up again and again, year after year.

We’d especially like to express our thanks to Signscope Signs in Tigard (11940 SW Pacific Hwy, Suite E) because every year Signscope does a terrific job with helping us advertise our lessons by updating the huge banner on the outside of the grange. They always provide great service, and they are greatly appreciated.

Founded in 1867, the National Grange is 150 years old, and to celebrate we are having a FREE dance December 2nd! Craig Abercrombie will be calling and Connie Clark is cueing. Then on the 14th, Mark Wheeler will be calling our Santa Dance & Connie is cueing.

We started the month of October by going dark to attend Sunset Promenaders' Anniversary Dance. The dinner was tasty, the callers and cuers delightful, and there was a large number of guests. There were many dancers from their sister club in Japan who gave gifts to those in attendance.

Our Halloween Costume Dance provided an opportunity for folks to don alter-egos along with their costumes.

We won the trophy for having the highest percentage of members attending the Tualatin Timber Squares Trophy Dance, and will be hosting the Trophy Dance on the evening of the Free dance Grange celebration on December 2nd.

Happy Holidays!

Lots going on here at the Buckeroo Barn! Lessons are moving forward and all of the students are having a great time and learning lots. We are taking them down to Grants Pass for the Midway Dance in order to get some additional floor time before Mid-Winter.

Our annual wreath project is moving full speed ahead! Members are working hard to put together beautiful holiday wreaths. There is no better way to welcome family and friends to your home for the holidays than to have them greeted with one of these beauties on your front door. We will have some for sale at our first annual Holiday Craft Bazaar. Come do some shopping, meet with Santa, and enjoy some holiday treats. Check out our website for all the details.

We had the honor of celebrating Dale Roberson this past month. He has been calling for the past 50 years and has a special place in our hearts. He has traveled all over Oregon to call and was the Buckeroo Club Caller for many years. We had visitors from all over the area. We are still lucky enough to have him call here at the barn from time to time. Check out our flyers and join us for one of his dances…you will be glad you did!

We also had the opportunity to celebrate and honor our Veterans in the Veteran’s Day Parade here in Roseburg. A square of dancers marched in the parade and then we all met up at Abby’s for pizza and socializing. Many of us had family members who were in WWII and this day gives us a chance to reflect and honor their strength.

The Charlie Brown Squares will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary the first Saturday in December. The Buckeroos are going dark so that we can all drive down and help them celebrate. We are looking forward to big party!

We having a special 5th Saturday dance in December. Scott Zinser will be joining us from Portland, Oregon to call the squares. Instead of having rounds between squares at this dance, we will be joining forces with the DC Dancers and have line dances. The DC Dancers rent the Barn from us, and we are excited to work together on this special dance. The very next night, we will have our New Year’s Eve celebration with Chuck Simpkins calling the squares and to cue the rounds we will have Neil Koozer.

See you in a square soon!
