Oregon Federation News
January 2018

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 January 2018
President's Corner

I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays.  Be sure to check out the special dance section in addition to the regular flyers this month when you look for a New Year’s Eve dance to bring in the New Year with good friends.

The end of January will bring Oregon’s Mid-winter Festival.  I hope most of you are planning on attending the festival this year.  It kicks off with a Trails End Dance sponsored by the Emerald Empire on Thursday, January 25.  Be sure to check out the flyer in this issue.  Mid-Winter starts at 2:00 pm on January 26, in the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in Albany and continues through Sunday January 29. Mid-Winter has 6, yes I said SIX dance floors for your dancing pleasure! They have a separate hall for Mainstream w/ Rounds, Plus w/ Rounds, Advance, B-51, Clogging, and Rounds. There will be 2 featured International callers this year - Dan Preedy and Buddy Weaver. Both the featured round dance cuers TJ & Bruce Chadd and the clogging cuers Russ & Lelia Hunsaker have cued internationally. Their bios are available on the Mid-Winter website. www.midwinterfestival.com/callers.htm.  Mid-winter has something for everyone.  There are dances, workshops, resale clothing, sewing clinics, educational seminars, a Round Table Discussion on, “Looking for Fun in All the Right Places”, a basket raffle, many youth activities throughout the weekend, and more! If you haven’t purchased your ribbons, yet – don’t delay.  The price for your ribbons will go up on January 15.

Hope your New Year is happy and filled with good friends, good health, and a lot of dancing.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Mid-Winter.

Kathy Roberts
OFSRDC President

Editor's Note

And so we begin another new year, fresh and full of possibilities and new beginnings.  I hope to see many of you at Mid-Winter Festival later this month, where the Randall Award will again be presented.  A link to the biographies of our well-deserving nominees are included below.

Randall Award

The complete list of Randall Award nominees can be viewed by clicking here.  All of our nominees have dedicated a big part of their life to square and round dancing in Oregon, and all are deserving of kudos.  Be sure to attend the opening cereminies at Mid-Winter Festival to see who will receive the award this year.

Insurance Updates

Markel Insurance, who is the underwriter for the liability insurance we get through USDA, has changed the layout of their insurance certificates, and that change is already causing some confusion.

The form now lists the USDA central insurance coordinator, Pat Inglis, as the "point of contact" for insurance issues, and not the Federation's Insurance Chairman, Kay Rogers.  Despite this change on the form, the procedures have not changed.  Kay is still your first point of contact.  When you have a claim or an insurance issue, you should always go through Kay, and Kay will contact Pat.

Federation Meetings

The Federation's next executive board meeting will be at Mid-Winter Festival, January 28, 2018.  Stay tuned to learn about the Education Seminar that will be presented at Mid-Winter.

Mid-Winter

Start planning for Mid Winter-Festival 2018, January 26, 27 and 28, 2018.

The Emerald Empire is putting on a Trail's End Dance on January 25, always a good time.

Summer Festival

Oregon's 2018 Summer Festival will be held at the Josephine County Fairgrounds in Grants Pass on June 22-24, 2018.  Watch here for more details. Download your registration form here.

Our next scheduled dance date is December 31, New Year's Eve. Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli are in charge of this dance and invite any callers or cuers who attend to call and/or cue. Everyone is encouraged to bring a pie. Wow, can you believe it'll be 2018? Please join us at 8:30 for Pre-Rounds. Mainstream with every third tip Plus starts at 9:00. We'll celebrate New Year's Eve in each time zone: New York City, Chicago, Ontario, Oregon and then Eugene/Springfield. Wow, that's a party! We'll dance a tip January 1, 2018 as well to welcome the new year.

We have an active New Dancer's Class in our area right now which is a huge plus. We encourage all dancers to support the new dancers and all of our wonderful clubs. Sandy Harris has been doing these lessons and is doing a great job!

Happy New Year!

Keep em' dancing,

We had our two regular club dances in November. The second Friday dance, being so close to Veterans’ Day, we used the theme Veterans’ Remembrance and asked members and other dancers to bring in photos of themselves or family members who had served in the military. We had a good response to this. Hattrick called a great dance for us as always and we had the added pleasure of having Mark Wheeler call a tip. Jackie Gale cued the rounds and had a floor full of round dancers.

On Saturday night, Nov. 11th, 14 Single Trees journeyed to Sweet Home to join the Squarenaders for their Turkey dinner and dance. How we love that homemade turkey with all the trimmings and all that pie too! They honored the veterans by having them come forward and get their pictures taken as a group. That was very stirring for everyone.

Our last dance of the month was to be called by Mike Halley but at the last minute he was unable to make it having moved to California earlier this year. So we asked Mark Wheeler to call for us and were very delighted to find out he could carry a whole dance, has a great stage personality, fine choice of music and a great singing voice. What a package! We’ll be sure to have him back for our 2018-19 dance year. We were a bit disappointed by a small turnout but many were away for the Thanksgiving holiday or just couldn’t feature dancing after all those calories the day before. We will rethink offering a dance on this night even though we are the only dance on the 4th weekend of the month in this area.

We are all looking forward to January, 2018. We will only have one dance that month, but it will be a good one for sure with Jim Hattrick calling. Many of us will be going up to the Albany fairgrounds to dance at Mid-Winter on the 4th weekend. We hope to see many of our friends from around the state and the Northwest dancing up a storm. Happy New Year!

We are always so blessed to have Kris Jensen call for us when she is visiting her brother, sister-in-law and mother who live here in Eugene. She is also asked to call for Cast-A-Shadow, our advanced group, when she's here.

We dance almost every Sunday at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. 5:30 - 8:00. All levels. Come join us. It's FUN! Please go to our "When and Where" page to make sure we are dancing. This is always kept up to date. Thanks!

We are enjoying have a few more dancers join us Sunday nights. Janet Geiger, an upcoming caller called a tip last time and did a fine job. Janet really works at her calling skills, and it shows.

Please come join us any Sunday night at the hall in Springfield at 5:30. We continue to enjoy all of the amenities the hall provides which includes closet space, cupboard space, a hard-wired speaker system, cushioned wood floor, etc. We are lucky to be here.

Happy Dancing,

Christina Corelli, Member-at-Large

Our B-51 and Mainstream combo dance on December 2nd was a lot of fun. Door prizes were handed out to five lucky dancers. We had a couple guest callers in the house. Lennie Ludiker and Janet Geiger called a tip in addition to our own Sandy Harris and Christina cueing rounds.

Lessons are going well and new dancers will soon be graduating (December 15th) with a new class starting in January.

Hope you can make it to our Plus/Mainstream dance on the first Saturday in January.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Mid-Winter.

Happy New Year everyone! We have been attending the New Dancers' Dances with the students and it's been a fun and festive time. Our New Dancers' Dance is on January 13 and we look forward to it. Since our class of mainstream students was small, we combined lessons with the Albany Timber Twirlers and it’s worked out well.

Coming up in March is our annual Coast Trip, March 9 and 10, when we'll be dancing both nights at Gleneden Beach Community Club. All are welcome! I know it’s a tossup what kind of weather we’ll have, but the Oregon coast is a lovely spot even on a blus-tery day. Karen

IWW Mainstream students continue to do great at our Sunday afternoon lessons, with a committed group of angels sharing their enthusiasm and expertise (Many thanks, an-gels!). We honored the class at a spaghetti feed and experienced clothing sale at our November 19 class.

A group of IWW hearty souls made a trek to the Oak Grove Community Center on No-vember 25 to dance to the calling of national caller Hunter Keller. Salem Swinging Stars hosted the season’s first beginner dance at the Square Dance Center on November 26. It was a rousing success – a great turnout, lots of enthusiasm, and good dancing by the students at their first real dance.

Sunday afternoon Plus workshops continue to challenge a small but dedicated group to hone Plus and DBD skills. Our exceptional November 4 dance with a Salem Swinging Stars visitation and a total of 44 visitors was followed by a touching tribute to veterans at our November 11 Veterans’ Day Dance. By press time we expect to have enjoyed a festive Christmas Dance.

We hope that you had a wonderful holiday season, and that you have a happy, fulfilling, healthy, and dance-filled New Year. Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. Dee and Bert Mackaman

We had great dances in November and our New Dancer/Toy Drive Dance on December 2 was super. Our caller is Charlotte Jeskey and our cuer is Jackie Gale. Our club visited Sweet Home Squarenaders for their Turkey Dinner Dance with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing. It was a wonderful evening.

As usual, the Lebanon Square Circlers participated in the community lighting display at Ralston Park and we had our Christmas potluck on December 16. We always love to have visitors for our dances and we especially hope to have a large crowd on Sunday, January 21 for our 69th BIRTHDAY DANCE. Charlotte Jeskey and Jim Voll will be calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Of course, strawberry shortcake will be served at the break. See you in a square! Marilyn York

The club has finished the Phase 3 moves in Intermediate Waltz and is working on Phase 4 moves. The class is coming along really well.

Since this article will come out before New Year’s Eve, we are still putting finishing touches to the party starting at 8:30 p.m. We are hoping that you are planning to attend and will join us in the fun and fellowship that will be shared for the evening.

We will hold a board meeting just prior to the publication of this article that will include planning on the next class and discussing our schedule to see what we can do to draw more to our class and membership.

We had guest cuers for the last two Thursdays of December. Hope you were able to come and share the talent. Looking forward to seeing you there. Marilyn Schmit

Willamette Squares is enjoying the ongoing two step and square dance lessons. The club went dark in December but we will resume our regular schedule in January. We will be hosting the new dancer dance the afternoon of January 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Salem Square Dance Center. We hope to see many familiar and new faces there! As the song goes: "Make new friends and keep the old; Some are silver and the others gold."

Willamette Squares welcomes three new members. Since Nancy and Brice Baker are no longer available, we have a new vice-president, Kevin Stanula and new lessons coordinator, Sherrie Stanula. Our other officers remain the same. Our president John Templin reports that after his procedure at OHSU it appears his pancreas is no longer giving him problems. He is happy to report he is relieved of the pain and that the stone that was causing him problems is no longer. Jodee Howard

In this very well advertised dance of Nov 25, the Thanksgiving Bash, was one of the most memorable in history. Although our council had nothing to do with it, the dance was held at the Oak Grove Community Club which is in our purview. It was actually a combined bachelor and bachelorette party for the marriage of Mike Kious and his fiancée Camelia the next day. Caller, Hunter Keller (Billings MT); cuer Rikki Lobato (Grants Pass).

Despite five other clubs dancing around Portland, twelve squares showed up. It was more like a regional dance festival with most people coming from out of town. Attendees came all the way from Medford to Brush Prairie and from Bend to the ocean. Also evocative of a regional festival were the mixed level squares and rounds. Split the pot was over $100.

It left no doubt that Mike Kious can throw quite the dance party!

Congrat’s Roger and Charlynn Newton for becoming our newest members. I told them that I wouldn’t want to join a club that would have someone like me as a member, but they joined anyway.

Soon, our ladies room will have a makeover just like the guys! Imagine, now WE can get a sauna, showers and hot tub just like the guys claim they have! Bathroom time will be dicey, however. Construction Chairman Dorcus Decor says no primping will be allowed in the unisex room, owing to the people who will be lined up to use the facilities.

Another New Year to keep on dancing! Our club will start out 2018 with our first club dance on January 6th, but we will be dark the 4th Saturday to encourage our members to go to the Mid-Winter Festival in Albany. That is always such a fun time!

We will be offering round dance lessons starting in January with Tami Helms teaching waltz, phase 1 and 2, for beginners. This will take place at the Boring Barn from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Sunday evenings starting January 14th. The cost will be $6 per lesson, or all ten lessons for $50 when prepaid.

Our mainstream lessons with Scott Zinser are going well, and several of our students have been attending the Jamborees. That extra floor time really helps their dancing skills. They will probably be graduating in February if the weather cooperates and we don’t miss too many lessons!

Stay tuned for more as we are hatching another Murder Mystery Dance in March. This time it is an original play written by square dancers. You will get an opportunity to figure out, “Who Blew up the Outhouse?” Details will appear in our next installment of the OFN.

Happy Hoppers - Link
December is always a busy month for the Hoppers, and this year is no exception. We collected toys and gifts for a non-profit organization that serves children and families in need of assistance. For many years following the local Walk and Knock Food Drive our club has helped a food bank, FISH of Vancouver, sort the food into categories such as: soup, vegetables, pasta, etc. Laughter and good natured teasing makes our time go quickly as we work together to do something for our community. Finally, our New Year’s Eve committee members have been working hard to put together a great evening for our members and guests. The theme this year is “Come Sail Away.” We are excited to have the Front Porch Trio: Jim Hattrick, Craig Abercrombie, and Adam Christman, calling and cueing. We’re looking forward to a scrumptious dinner that is being catered by a local catering company. All in all, we know it will be a great evening.

January will see our club members getting ready for Mid-Winter Festival in Albany. Not only do we enjoy dancing to some terrific callers and cuers, but we also appreciate the time we have to renew friendships with dancers we may see only at special events. We’re looking forward to seeing many of you there.

We have finally selected a club caller and invite you all to come dance with us and help give a big welcome to our caller Darrell Kalmbach and his wife Erin. We dance every second and third Saturday at Milwaukie Community Center at 42nd and Jackson in Milwaukie.

Our club actively participates in visitations to other clubs each month. We believe that by bringing dancers to visit other clubs, that we help support the clubs we visit and help keep square dancing alive and well . We have a game we play when we do visitations. It is called “ the banner game.” Here is how WE play it. If you bring at least 8 dancers ( one square) to our club we will give you one of our club banners to take back to your club. Then we will bring at least one square to your club to get it back. Many times an added bonus is that dancers end up going to a hall they have never been to before and enjoy dancing with that club and caller and want to return and dance with them again . It is a win-win situation. There’s more. If we already have your banner and you come to get it bringing two squares (16) dancers or more you get your banner back plus one of our. This only works if we have one of your banners. We will never give more than one of our own club banners at one visitation. This game knows no boundaries. You do not need to stay in your own council. We presently have banners from Valley Squares, Hoedowners, Silver Stars, Charlie Brown and BnB. Our next visitation is to mid winter festival in Albany January 26, 27,28. We hope you will come and support this wonderful event.

See you in a square

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

The Callers & Cuers "Midway" dance was a huge success. There were lots of "purple hearts" earned and everyone had a great time. There were 5 squares on the floor for most tips and probably 2 more sitting out. Everyone had a blast!.

We will revisit the first Tuesday meeting schedule in April and see how it is going. We will keep you posted.

PLEASE support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley. Everyone needs all the support they can get. Times are "skinny," so, please come out and help by supporting your local clubs.

The next Council meeting will be February 6, 2018 at Denny's Restaurant on Biddle Road at 430pm.

There are still "Learn to Square Dance" t-shirts available. We have found the t-shirts are a great conversation starter.

The Charlie's celebrated their 50th birthday on Dec 2nd! What a wonderful party it was!! Charlie Robertson was so much fun and the rounds were great with Steve Murphy! Thank you to all that came to help us celebrate this wonderful milestone!! We had about 80 dancers I believe. Our Chocolate Christmas Affair Dance was small, but I am sure those that were there enjoyed dancing to Chuck!!

We have guest caller J Domis on Jan 6th with Mary Nutt cueing. On January 20th, we welcome back Richard Lane and Steve Murphy. Please note the flyers for new times during the winter months (Jan-Mar). Let us know what you think.

New classes start Thu Jan 11th at 630. Our Sept class is still going strong on Tuesdays, followed by a Mainstream Workshop.

January also brings MidWinter Festival in Albany - always a great time!!

Dean called a fun dance for our newer dancers and the plus dancers. Everyone had a great time especially changing squares on the last tip.

We start back up with classes on January 8th. Our next dance will be on Saturday, January 20th with our Winter Wonderland dance. (Yes, Mary, we will have rounds).

The Rogue Squares are still holding their own with the classes. We are solid at 3 students every week. We have a couple who attend 2 weeks on and off for 2 weeks. Phil is very pleased with their progress. We will be dark on Mondays for Christmas & New Years Day, but they should be able to pick it back up in a hurry without missing a beat.

We have had a great response to our "Angel Cards." One of the Angels said the other night, "I have 2 full cards (that's 2 dance passes), but I can't remember where I put them." That is a great support for our activity. Thanks to all who come out to help, especially the Rogue Squares and the Star Promenaders.

The Rogue Squares are sponsoring a new student dance on January 12 to encourage these new dancers to participate at something other than classes. This is our annual "Pajamarama." All clubs are invited to bring their class to this dance. The new student dancers won't have to worry about having "square dance" attire, just wear their "jammies." Phil Ramey will be the caller and Elaine Funk will cue the rounds. There won't be any Advanced dancing at this dance and the donation is reduced to $5.00 for this one time only.

We are really excited about the line-up of callers for the club dances for February and March. We will be dark in April for Pear Blossom.

See you in a square!!!

There is a saying that as you grow older, times speeds up. Now while time is really not going faster we all of a sudden pause, shake our head and say, "What happened to 2017? It was here a minute ago and now it is gone." The Columbia River Dancers had a very good 2017 and are looking forward to an even better 2018. We danced in the cold, we danced in the heat and we danced in the sand. We have many new friends and the club is growing. We ended up the year with Dan Nordbye calling our Turkey Burn-Off just after Thanksgiving, Mike and Julie Stout doing the honors on the 9th and rounding out the year on the 23rd of December with our caller/cuer, Jim Hattrick. What could be better?

If you know of friends or neighbors who would like to dance, the CRD start new lessons the first Tuesday of each month with Jim Hattrick as our teacher. Encourage them to come and we will let them in free for that first lesson. Hard to beat a deal like that!

Once the Christmas tree is un-decorated and the gifts that were too small have been exchanged it is time to get out of the house. On January 13th we will be at the Hazel Dell Grange again with Craig Abercrombie. This will be a good time to brush off the cobwebs of the holidays and get ready for a great 2018 season. Remember we dance Plus from 7 to 8 and Mainstream from 8 on with rounds in between tips.

As has been the tradition in the past, the Columbia River Dancers will be dark on Saturday January 27th. Many members of the club will travel to Albany to dance to national callers Dan Preedy and Buddy Weaver and cuers TJ and Bruce Chadd. We look forward to dancing in a square with both old and new friends. So, if you do not have your tickets, it is still not too late.

Welcome a New Year with no mistakes in it yet. The good news is that you may be smart enough not to repeat the mistakes you made last year and you are creative enough to try new things and make new ones. Do not despair as these are called “learning opportunities”. Now, don’t you feel better?

We recognized and thanked the ten veterans who attended our Veterans’ Day Dance. I am especially glad to see the ones from WW2 who are still going strong. These are the tough guys.

Members are talking about attending Mid-Winter Festival where they plan to see many friends from other clubs.

The Eager Beavers approved a motion made by Kathy Roberts that TVC clubs host or co-host upcoming 5th Saturday dances. Details on respective responsibilities for each are being decided. Seems like a good idea to me. The 2018 New Years Eve dance will be co-hosted by Eager Beavers and Sunset Promenaders so you know it will be a good one.

After a very successful Plus Class earlier this year we are repeating our program starting at noon, February 5th, Monday, running into May. If you are thinking about learning or brushing up on Plus be ready to join us. We will have the same three great callers giving the lessons: Daryl Clendenin, Jim Hattrick, and Darrell Kalmbach. Please check for up to date information at www.EagerBeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

Happy New Year!

November’s in the rear view mirror for the Hoedowners and there wasn’t a dull moment. The deciding 7th game of the World Series was played during our regular Wednesday night class on November 1st. Since it was the deciding game between the Dodgers and the Astros, we mounted a scoreboard on the wall and kept the class apprised of the score. Unfortunately the final result was decided early in the game with the Astros scoring 5 runs by the bottom of the second inning so our Hoedowner scorekeeper had little to do but write in zeroes. We adjourned after class for celebrating or mourning depending on your team.

November 11th was that crazy dance we call The Turkey Toss. Ten turkeys were donated and won by participants who launched, tossed and turned bean bags through the holes which appear much larger when you don’t have a bean bag in your hand. Moments of hilarity, inaccuracy, chagrin, and success.

November 15th was the annual Hoedowner Spaghetti Dinner which 56 attended. There was garlic and parmesan, fresh pasta, and tiramisu. And, there was Frank Sinatra serenading in the darkened dining room; certainly a romantic evening for our new dancers and members alike with a chance to relax and visit. As usual the food was delicious and the leftovers were few.

November 17th was our monthly visitation. We were off to the Toe Draggers Harvest Festival.

November 25th was our Soup Night Dance; seven different soups and beautiful rolls and breads, a refreshing change from Thanksgiving Holiday fare. We decided we might just need to do a dance where everyone just brings their best bread and maybe with a bit of butter or jam.

And finally on the 29th we ended the month with our Peek at Fashion and Clothing Sale at our Wednesday class. Angels wore regular dance apparel to illustrate the norms for a dance and members brought recycled square dance shirts, skirts, dresses, slips and belts to sell to benefit the club. We love seeing those items going to new homes and knowing we’ll see them again on the dance floor.

January 13th is our annual Hoedowner Black and White Sparkle Dance. If you’ve never been, please join us for a ballroom all aglitter and sparkling with lights and mirrors. It’s really the most elegant dance of the year to start 2018 out right by stopping by!

Whoa! January 26-28 is Mid-Winter Festival and the club is planning on going dark and heading south to Albany. Are you going? Hope to see you there.

Our top news is that Jeanine Norden is again cuing, and she will be back to cuing for us regularly as of January 6th. We really look forward to having her with us again. Thanks to Dennis Smith and Tami Helms for filling in while she was gone.

We have been asked over the years about lessons. Starting in February we will have Plus lessons each dance night in the hour before the dance starts. We would love to have more dancers joining us to enjoy Randy Dibble's calling. More details will be out, both in this column and in flyers.

Other news is that we are planning on visitations to clubs who picked up our banners at our Birthday Dance. More details will be available online and in flyers.

The last isn't new. It's just a reminder that in inclement weather to check our website as to whether there's a decision on the afternoon of the day before our dance if weather will dictate canceling for safety's sake in unsuitable weather.

We hope to see you on our dance floor soon.

On November 10th R Square D hosted a Veterans Appreciation Dance. There were six squares. We had a visitation from the Buzzin Bees. KC Curtis and Darrell Kalmbach assisted Craig with a couple of tips. Because of traffic issues on the Lewis & Clark bridge Craig was a few minutes late getting to the dance. Thank You to our cuer Lonnie for getting the dance started with rounds.

November 1st and 2nd we served coffee at the South bound Toutle Rest area. It is always fun to chat with the travelers, many have a square dance story to tell.

Our dance on the 25th featured Gospel music. Our caller and cuer kept us dancing to a lot of good gospel music. Thank you Craig and Lonnie.

We will be starting beginner lessons again on January 3rd.

We will be dancing on January 12th, and serve warm winter soups at break.

Our dance on January 27th is cancelled so that our members can attend mid winter.

For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

Happy New Year to one and all.

Sunset Promenaders - Link
The Seaside Sashay was a success again this year and we want to thank all the dancers that came. The weather was fantastic, the dancing at the “Turn Around” was exceptional, the shopping was great, and the restaurants were outstanding, too. Dan Preedy and Darrell Kalmbach teamed up together and did an outstanding job of calling, while Debbie Taylor did her usual excellent job of cueing including phase two through intermediate rounds. There was much going on all weekend including “Treasure Hunt”, Mud Wrestling, and the split the pot drawing. It was a fun activity all weekend thanks to all you dancers and good planning ahead of time by the Sunset Promenaders and the Hay Shakers organizers. Thank you dancers; it is all you being there, without you it would not be anything.

Speaking of fun, our Promenaders Plus Third Anniversary on November 17th was a fun evening with Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt calling and cueing.

Hope you have some time in January to come and enjoy our dances. The dances are January 4th Promenaders Plus Dance, January 6th a Sunset Promenaders mainstream dance with the theme of Wild West including cornbread and chili at the break. Then on the 18th we have the Promenaders Plus Dance, and on Saturday the 20th the Sunset Promenaders are having a “Pajama” dance.

Our mainstream lessons start January 7th at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall and are from 4PM to 6; the first lesson is free.

2018 Here We Come! How time flies when you are having fun in the square dance world!! November gave us a beautiful end to the fall season and beginning of all of our wonderful holiday celebrations.

The Toes had a great canned food drive for November and December. Thanks to everyone that helped the Toes out to feed families in need.

The New Dancer’s Jamboree was fun to be able to help the new students gain more experience on the dance floor. It’s a great time to meet and greet and help out our new dancing friends. We all remember our beginning dances.

Wanted to thank KC and Linda for giving the club a relaxed and enjoyable evening at the grange playing table games and eating snacks. It’s been a great year of dancing with them.

Hope many of you are able to get over to the TVC New Year’s Eve dance. It’s special to be able to bring in the New Year with our square dancing friends.

Our dances this month are on January 5th and 19th. Come join us on the 5th for our Black and Blue Ball with the goal of “Dancing Till You Drop” night of fun. January 19th is our regular dance of the month.

Round dance lessons begin with Bev and Harlan Flint on January 7th at the Kinton Grange from 2 to 4 p.m. We so appreciate Bev and Harlan. They make dancing so much fun.

We hope to see you at Mid-Winter Festival in Albany at the end of the month.

We are already looking forward to our Ground Hog Dance and Sweetheart Ball in February.

Hope to see you at many of our dances in the New Year.

On November 12th we had our new dancers jamboree, and the next week we took our students to Chaps & Petticoats jamboree, too.

December 3rd we had our club’s annual holiday dinner, this time at Yen’s Chinese Restaurant in Tigard, in a nice side room with no extra charge, with the crazy white elephant gift exchange of goofy gifts showing up again, year after year. Very merry!

On January 7th we begin ten weeks of Mainstream Lessons B52-68, on Sunday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 at the Tigard Grange. All students and angels welcome.

On January 13th, Saturday, we’re having a B-51 Dance and hope students come visit from all the other clubs.

And we are gathering many raffle items together for our big anchor dance, the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball, on Saturday February 10th. Hope you all can come!

Our first Holiday Craft Fair was a huge success! In fact, it was so much fun that it will become an annual event here at the barn. Many of the venders were so pleased that we have been asked to consider doing a Spring Craft Fair as well…we are considering this, so watch for flyers and news in the spring!

December 16th we celebrated our Christmas dance. It was fun to get together and enjoy the company of good friends. We started with a potluck and then Club members provided gifts for all of our youth dancers, and an Ornament exchange was organized for the adult dancers. A jolly time was had by all!

We are looking forward to our December 30th dance with Scott Zinser. The DC Line Dancing Group will be joining us as well, and instead of rounds between squares we will be learning some line dances.

We will bring in the New Year on December 31st with Chuck Simpkins and Neil Koozer. Pre-rounds with Neil will begin and 9:00 pm and squares with Chuck will start at 9:30 pm. The dance will be mainstream with every third tip plus.

Several new events will be happening in January. At our first dance we are having a Chili Competition. Phil Ramey will be calling and Cathy Houston Cuing. This dance will be on the 6th. Then on January 20th we will be having a “Stock the Shelves” dance. Dancers are being encouraged to bring things like toilet paper, paper towels, and other items used at the barn. In exchange for helping supply some of our barn necessities, dancers will receive $1 off their admission to the dance that night.

Remember… we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
