A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 18 August 2018
President's Corner

I hope all of you have either had an opportunity to visit a new club or attend a new special dance this summer or have plans to this month. In the May OFN, I listed the special summer dance weekends that I was able to find information on. Following, is a brief description of the special dance weekends that are sponsored by our Oregon clubs through the end of the year. Most of these dances have registration forms in this issue so if you are planning on attending some, please register early so they know you are coming.

August 31-September 2: Beachcombers Battle Rock Festival in Port Orford. KC Curtis will be the caller with cuer Dave Cooper. Check out the registration form in this month’s OFN for a schedule of their fun events, which includes dancing in the surf and a pie making contest – I believe a challenge was issued during the last state meeting by the last year’s pie making champion! Please note that if you wish to join them for the BBQ dinner on Friday evening, you must pre-register prior to August 22.

October 12-13: K.C. Squares 43rd Annual Potato Festival in Klamath Falls. Their festival will have something for everyone. Their evening program includes mainstream dancing with plus tips and rounds. During the day, they will have workshops. On Saturday evening, they will have their annual yummy Baked Potato Dinner. Please note that you need to preregister in order to join them for the dinner.

October 12-13: R Square D’s annual Octoberfest Weekend in Kelso, WA. Callers Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman will be joined by cuer Susan Healea for mainstream dancing with plus tips and rounds in the evening. In addition to casual dancing during the daytime, their registration form lists many special Saturday activities including a garage sale tour and a German dinner.

October 26-27: Hayshakers and the Sunset Promenaders’ Seaside Sashay in Seaside. Callers Darin Keith & Scott Zinser will be joined by Cuer Debbie Taylor for a very full weekend including dancing at the Turnaround and the Factory Outlet. Check out their registration form for their schedule of events.

October 26-28: Rosetown Ramblers’ annual Scares and Squares in the Portland area. Callers Gary Monday, Kris Jensen, and Michael Kellogg will be calling from Basic to C-2 during this square dancing weekend. This year, the weekend events will be held in two different locations – please refer to their registration form for information.

Hope everyone is staying cool this summer!

Kathy Roberts
OFSRDC President

Our new president, Pat Cox from the coast did a fine job heading up the CCCA meeting and dance June 30.

Our next scheduled dances are September 29 and December 29. We'll have to decide whether or not we';ll actually have a dance December 29 since New Year's Eve is just a couple of days later. Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli are doing the New Year's Eve dance December 31 at the hall. Any callers or cuers present at this dance are invited to call and/or cue.

Kirby Goode's memorial service June 9 was attended by a great

many dancers, teachers, church friends, former school principals, relatives, neighbors, etc. A big thank you to Roger Putzler for managing the sound and the mic for sharing. Thank you to so many for helping out with decorating the hall and for taking care of the potluck. This was truly a fun celebration for Kirby. He would have loved it!

Keep on dancing, calling and cueing for FUN

As the interim club reporter, I do not have much to report on my own as I was on vacation for both club dances in June. But according to our club historian Vonda Clayton our first dance held on Friday, June 8 was a success. It was our annual Reigning Cats and Dogs Dance held as each year as a benefit for Greenhill Humane Society. Jim Hattrick called the dance and Jackie Gale cued as they normally do on the second Fridays. Over 4 squares were present and over $200 were raised along with donated pet supplies gathered to help our homeless, furry friends. We want to thank everyone who donated cash and goods to this good effort.

Our 4th Friday dance was called by K.C. Curtis and cued by Jackie Gale. While this dance was not as well attended (perhaps because it was held on the same weekend as Summer Festival and our sister club’s June campout), we know K.C. did his best to entertain everyone with his wonderful voice and good humor. Next year the Summer Festival will be in July and not on our dance weekend, the Whirl-A-Ways will hold their June campout the previous weekend so we hope this dance will be better attended. Our club president, Larry (Carol) Reetz, as chair for 2019 Mid-Winter was, of course, in Grants Pass promoting Mid-Winter Festival and square dancing in general. Don (Yvonne) Schimonitz, our vice president, was in charge in place of Larry. Thank you Don and all who came out to support the caller, cuer and club. In future we will try to go dark for Summer Festival but as we line up callers so far in advance we never know on which weekend Summer Festival will be held. We do hope that the tradition of Summer Festival will continue.

We will be holding dances as always through the summer except for Diamond Lake weekend and as always we go casual for July and August and on days when it gets over 80. We do have air-conditioning and a great dance floor!

Happy dancing this summer wherever you happen to be.

We continue to dance Sunday nights from 5:30 to 8:00 at all levels with our competent caller and teacher, Tim Matteson. We encourage dancers to come dance with us and get more floor time. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 to make sure we are dancing as we go dark once in a blue moon. We don't want to miss you. Our dances/classes are always casual. We always have a lot of food too. Come for a fun evening almost every Sunday!

So many Spin Cycle Squares members were in attendance at Kirby's memorial service June 9, Thank you so much. A bit thank you for all of the help from so many.

Happy Dancing,

Our club is dark for July and August, but we're happy to see there are a variety of dances up and down the valley that we can visit.

We enjoyed a club potluck in June, and at the meeting we voted to offer a 'yearly dance pass for the 2018/2019 dance season. This will cover all of the Corvallis Squares hosted dances, including the coast trip. Normal price is $6 per dance, or $90 for the entire year. The yearly pass will cost $75.

We look forward to our fall lessons. We've found that most new dancers have been personally invited by a club member, so we're focusing on that and also making business sized cards with lessons information to hand out. We plan once again to dance a demo at the Corvallis Farmers’ Market, on August 4.

We hope you're enjoying summer in Oregon; some say nothing else can compare! Karen

By press time, we will have enjoyed our mid-summer July 14 Pie and Tie Dance. We’re sure it will have been a grand evening with lots of delicious pie, good fellowship, wonderful dancing, and with many of the gents sporting “heirloom” neckties.

Don’t miss our upcoming special dances: November 3, Halloween Dance; December 8, Christmas Dance; March 9, IWW Birthday Dance; April 13, Easter dance.

We will celebrate the end of another great summer at our annual IWW Picnic at Maud Williamson State Recreation Site on August 26 and Fall lessons will be in Building D at the Salem Hospital.

We will be dark in August but you are invited to come and dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. Mark your calendar – Our kick-off dance of the new dance year is September 1.Hope to see you across a square! Dee and Bert Mackaman

The Lebanon Strawberry Festival Dances and Weekend were a great success. The weather was perfect, dances were well attended and our Silent Auction fund raiser was the best ever.

Our club goes dark for July and August, but members will be attending special dances in the area. We are scheduling demonstration dances in September in preparation for lessons starting on September 16. The Labor Day Weekend at the Cawrse farm is our next big event. There will be potlucks, dancing and lots of fun. Have a great summer!

We are still adjusting to the new schedule but now we need to shift to what we are going to do for the fall season. Our sessions have been well attended and much needed for the phase 2 dancers who need some floor time. Hopefully that will continue.

The dancers seem to enjoy the phase 2 dancing and quick, short workshops on steps that show a need to be improved. We are enjoying plenty of variety and fun. Ken continues his second and fourth Thursdays with phase 3-4 dancing and slow two- step for the summer. I have been out of town so don’t know how they are doing but will find out shortly, now that I am home from Missouri. Hot and Humid! Glad to be back.

Come and see us and join in on the fun of a relaxed evening of dancing and nice people to be around. Marilyn Schmit

Salem Swingin' Stars
Salem Swingin' Stars dance all summer long. Come join us in the air conditioned Salem Square Dance Center on the first, third, and fifth Fridays of the month. August brings us another 5th Friday Plus dance on the 31st.

We have been busy, busy, busy dancing all over Salem. A group of 20 of us danced at the World Beat Festival on June 30. We had a great time and they want us back next year! On July 4, a group of us danced at the Lancaster Village Retirement Center. The residents enjoyed the dancing and the group enjoyed the food afterwards. We have also been asked to dance at the Mt. Angel Towers in August for their Western Days.

We are looking forward to Mainstream Lessons starting on September 12. A flyer will follow soon.

Several of our younger dancers are learning Plus this summer so they can better compete at the Teen Festival next year. See you on the dance floor. Sheila Machado

Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares met at the Salem Square Dance Center in June for their monthly dance entitled “The Great American Pastime”. Baseball caps and Cracker Jacks adorned the tables, and hot dogs were served. Many dancers represented their favorite baseball teams by wearing the team's colors and logo. Sandy Harris ably called and cued. Everyone present enjoyed the square and round dancing.

At their quarterly meeting club members discussed their upcoming dances for July and August and their Maypole storage. They also discussed their involvement in hosting the state Square Dance meetings and dance taking place on Saturday Sept 4. Following on Sunday morning Sept 5 will be the State Federation meeting.

On the agenda were Square and round dance lessons scheduled every year in the fall on Sunday evenings. We've learned that Independence Wagon Wheelers will tentatively be offering free lessons at the hospital on Sunday nights which would conflict with our schedule. We were wondering if lessons would be better served by foregoing our lessons and offering to help with the lessons at the hospital. We will be investigating this proposed idea.

On a sad note we are grieving the loss of the 14 year old sister of some of our club members. Our heartfelt condolences go out the Rudolph family. Steve Hoots for Jodee Howard

We had three whole squares at our council dance last month. Then (next evening) we were longingly contemplating the TVC council dance across the river. The PAC had a couple levels of squares and mostly phase two rounds. The TVC had three levels of square dances and progressively high levels of rounds all night. And the result? The TVC had three times as many attendees! We’ll need to consider that.

It’s getting into the season when we don’t know when we will dance and when we won’t. Like many dance clubs that rent granges (with little or no air conditioning), the summer temp’s can get too hot to dance. Basically, if the temperature is over 90 degrees better call our President, Glenn, at 503-829-3062, or consult our Facebook page to see if we’re dancing.

August is usually our warmest month and we have our outdoor dance floor ready in time. We inaugurated it with Jim Hattrick on July 7th with a great kickoff dance for our annual summer picnic and dance to celebrate our nation's birthday. We open it to the public and had several new people there who may be potential new students for our mainstream lessons this fall. The floor behind the Barn is shaded by evening and lighted. There are benches around the floor. It was a most pleasant evening with a lot of smiling dancers. Thanks to Marc De La Bruere who put in a lot of hard work and to his many helpers!

Dan Nordbye has been doing Funshops on Monday nights at the Boring Barn to help mainstream dances hone their skills. He teaches us how to break sloppy dancing habits and he works moves from different positions and patterns to sharpen us. Come join us. These workshops will continue throughout the summer, and the dates are on the flyer on the OFN.

Come out this summer and dance under the stars with us on these warm summer evenings. We dance 1st, 4th, and 5th Saturdays.

Happy Hoppers - Link
Hoppers are on the move! We will soon be in our new home. However, before we get there, we are having another free dance so we can check out a potential new hall. That’s right! Monday, July 30th, Hoppers are sponsoring a free dance staring at 7:30 at the Washington Grange located at 7701 NE Ward Road, Vancouver, WA. It will be a combination plus and mainstream dance called and cued by our own Jim Hattrick. Everyone is welcome to attend. So if you are curious about where we might start our dance year in September, come and enjoy this opportunity to be with friends and try out a new dance location. The grange is an air conditioned building, so no matter what the weather is we should all be comfortable. Once we have tried out this hall, we will make a decision about our next location. We are confident that starting in September we’ll be back with renewed enthusiasm in our new home, and we will be ready to welcome all of our square dancing friends to our new facility. We’ll keep you posted about the new location as soon as the final decision is made.

The first Sunday in August we will get together at the Oja farm for our annual club picnic. The farm is a perfect place to gather, share a meal and spend time visiting with our Hopper friends. It’s always a very well attended gathering. Our two well trained BBQ cooks, Don Oja and Randy Amundson, do a terrific job of keeping the hamburgers and hot dogs hopping off the grill and onto hungry Hoppers’ plates. Tasty side dishes, salads, and desserts provided by members round out the meal, and everyone goes home with a full tummy.

When we resume dancing in September, we anticipate experiencing the same activities that have become important to our club members: dining out once a month, angeling new students in the mainstream and plus levels, visiting other clubs and dancing together with all of our square dance friends. We will just be welcoming our members and square dance community friends in a new location.

There was a lot of excitement in the air here at River City Dancers as we welcomed Les and Paula Seeley back for a visit to us from their retirement home in Arizona. Les called our June 14th dance and will be calling for us again on September 8.

June was also the time of our 67th National Square Dance Convention which was held in Kansas City this year. Our River City Riders were there representing our area and put on four performances. We are so proud of them.

We recently elected new officers . Ron and Barbara Whitworth are our new president couple.

We continue to dance every second and third Saturday at Millwaukie Community Center 42nd and Jackson in Milwaukie. Our hall is air conditioned. We enjoy attending visitations to other clubs every month and love having visitors attend our dances. Come dance with us.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

The 5th Friday Council Dance on June 29th with Wayne Weaver calling & Elaine Funk cueing was successful. This was the last time Wayne would call a dance before he retires, that is, unless we can catch him on the fly for a dance in the future.

The "Fountain of Youth" dance on July 6th had 3 squares. There were 14 children dancing. Dean Black, from Yreka, did not make it up to Grants Pass for the event due to the Klamathon Fire. They were afraid they would not be able to return home after the dance.

The next 5th Friday Council Dance will be November 30th in Medford with Lawrence Johnstone calling & Rikki Lobato cueing. This should be a great dance with Advanced at 6:30, pre-rounds at 730 and Mainstream w/Plus tips at 8pm.

Please note the change in our meeting place. Starting in August, we will be meeting at Round Table Pizza in Poplar Square.

Please support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley. Everyone needs all the support they can get. Times are "skinny," so come out and help by supporting your local clubs. We don't want to lose any clubs because of non-support from the dancers.

The next Council meeting will be Aug 7th at 4:30pm at Round Table Pizza, Poplar Square (Medford).

July was quite a festive month!! We had a wonderful dance with national caller Bronc Wise & cuer Rikki Lobato. Smiles were abundant, which always a joy to see, and truly the point of square dancing.

Our Fast Track/Accelerated mainstream class is moving quickly and they will have a special dance/graduation on Tuesday, July 31st. Chuck Simpkins will call; and Rikki Lobato will cue some rounds as well. Fun starts at 7pm.

We stole a banner from the Stars on July 14th. Bittersweet dance, as this was the last time Wayne Weaver will call a club dance!! Especially emotional when he sang "The Cowboy Rides Away" for the last tip!! We will miss Wayne, but know that will see him & Debbie every once in awhile!!!!

July 21st is our Southern Nites dance with Chuck & Rikki. This is our last regular dance until October. The Charlie's are dark for the fair in August.

In September, we will not dance Labor Day weekend; and we are also dark to celebrate Circle N Squares birthday on September 15th in Yreka.

Stay tuned for a dance in September on the Tuesday nite before classes start.

New classes will start on Thursday, September 6th at 630pm. We are looking forward to welcoming some enthusiastic new dancers!!!

We are all excited for Diamond Lake Festival July 25-28th with the always wonderful Hunter Keller & MaryAnn Callahan!!! Going to be a wonderful time.

We have some great dances coming up during the rest of the year!! October has Chuck Simpkins & Sarge Glidewell; then we are dark Potato Festival Weekend.

November has J Domis & Bob Dingman as well as Mike Sikorsky & Steve Murphy.

Be sure to mark Dec 1st on your calendar - this is our 51st birthday dance and we have Michael Kellogg & MaryAnn Callahan as our wonderful caller & cuer!!!!

Special treat to dance to both. They are also doing Summer Festival in July in Salem; so you get a sneak peek at their fabulous talent!!!

Our last dance of the year will be with Phil Ramey & Elaine Funk. Lots of fun dances at the Charlie Browns; as well as many festivals and area dances to attend in between!!

Happy dancing & See You In A Square!!!!

Rogue Squares
In case you didn't know, the Rogue Squares are on a limited dance schedule. We are having dances only in January & July, for now. We will give this a trial run and see what happens. Since our caller, Phil Ramey, has completed a "Caller School" and has some pretty good sounding ideas, the Rogue Squares are going to stick around and see how the situation is after January & the annual "Pajamarama."

In the meantime, we are dancing at the other clubs in our council. The Stars Diamond Lake Festival will be lots of fun. We went to the Buckeroo Roundup in Roseburg and the Gold Digger Dance in Yreka, and had a great time at both dances. We will be going to the Potato Festival in Klamath Falls in the middle of October, and Harvest Hoedown in Yuba City at the end of October. The list goes on & on!

Our July 20th dance was "Potluck Birthday Party for the United States." The caller was Phil Ramey and the cuer was Elaine Funk. The dance was for any dancer who likes a good time and for the recent graduates, both September & January classes.

We are still working on the future for The Rogue Squares. Come on out and help us make a come back. You won't be sorry.

See you in a square!!!!

The TVC 5th Saturday, June 30th dance had over 8 squares enjoying a Mainstream to Advanced event at the Aloha Grange. Scott Zinser called an hour of Mainstream with intro to Plus while Jeanine Norden cued Level 2-3 Rounds. Then they switched gears with an hour of Plus and intro to Advanced with Level 3-5 Rounds. When the dance was supposed to end at 10, everyone was having such a good time that Scott and Jeanine continued until 10:30. The Valley Squares won the TVC Banner by having the highest percentage of their club present.

Our next Council event will be our annual Hahn Farm Potluck and Barn Dance on Sunday, August 12th. Potluck by the lake begins at 5:30 followed by dancing in the barn from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. This year our caller is Jim Hattrick with Connie Clark cueing. Pre-rounds at 6:30, Mainstream and level II Rounds at 6:45 with every third tip Plus and intermediate rounds. Co-hosted by the Hoedowners. See the flyer for directions. If the temperatures are too high or there is an air quality problem like last year, a cancellation notice will be posted to the Federation Facebook page and to the flyer below.

With August comes warm, Really Warm, weather. As many know, the Hazel Dell Grange does not have air conditioning. That said, if the temperature is above 90 degrees at 5 PM on a dance or lesson day the club will cancel the event. The grange received money from the Silver Stars that has gone toward the purchase of new windows and perhaps to window coverings which will greatly assist in keeping things cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Kudos to the Stars for their help. At the same time all of us in the square dance community are sorry to hear they have disbanded the club.

The Columbia River Dancers will be offering a beginning class, as we do every month, for first time dancers and a class for those wishing to go on to mainstream. The classes start the first Tuesday of each month. Since some classes are small our instructor, Jim Hattrick, will call to the level of those in attendance. This usually means that students advance quickly. If anyone has the desire to brush up or learn, please come join us.

August 11th will have Craig Abercrombie Calling for us. By then the windows will be in and some of the heat may be outside and not in. Nevertheless, Craig will keep us going hot and heavy.

On the 25th, Jim will be wearing his Hawaiian shirt and having us dance to music of the Islands as we celebrate our 50th state with our Hawaiian theme evening. So it will be just fine to have our ladies in their muumuus and the gentlemen in their Hawaiian shirts.

We look forward to having you come dance with us. Singles are welcome as the club strives to make sure everyone gets to dance and have fun.

How can it be that summer is leaving and fall is coming? The out-of-control green growth of summer is slowing down and that may be a good thing as I can not keep up with the yard and garden.

June moved quickly and our new officers are keeping us in line as best they can. In case you wondered our new officers are as follows: Chief Dam Builder - Karen and Ferrous Steinka, Assistant Dam Builder - Sally and Mike Duyck, Gnawer - Marie Clem, Log Thumper - Judy Martin, and TVC Delegate - Ken Marifke. Dave Pebworth conducted the installation thanking the old officers and reminding the new officers of their responsibilities. Let us all give a “Thank you” to those who volunteer, spending their precious time to keep the club running smoothly. A hug would help too.

Our annual picnic will be at Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro August 1st. We relax, eat, play games, and even win prizes. This year we thank Marguerite Morin for organizing the picnic.

Do not forget the Hahn Barn Dance August 12th. Making this event even better is the picnic by the pond before the dance. Our members who have been part of the Barn Cleaning Crew have been blessing the Boy Scouts who are cleaning the barn this year. Just be happy if you have never cleaned a barn.

At least five of our members attended Nationals in Nashville among the seventeen other Oregonians, most of whom were from TVC. They reported meeting a wonderful bunch of people from around the country and some good dancing. Nationals will be near by in Spokane in 2020 so you can start planning now to attend.

Even if you work on Mondays, you can join us once in a while; we dance every Monday, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. We dance from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club

June was here and gone so quickly. We had an abundance of strawberries June 9th for our "Strawberry Dance" and everyone had the opportunity to make theirs special with a selection of favorite cakes and whipped cream. We danced to "Somebody's in the Strawberry Patch with Sally" along with our "Sally".

June 23rd found us celebrating "Parenthood". We brought pictures of our parents to see if we could match members to the pictures. Some were more difficult than others. We thank our visitors for joining us for this dance and always. We love seeing your smiling faces.

Nothing says summer like an evening baseball game and the Hoedowners are scheduled for an outing on Sunday, August 5th to see a Hops game. We have done this for several summers now and it is a fun evening. We will have our private party deck, dinner, sodas, and no host adult beverages.

Join us for dancing in August. Our "Here's the Scoop" dance with ice cream sundaes will be August 11th. Also, "Elvis' will be in the hall. Mark Wheeler will be our guest caller, and Randy Lewis will be our cuer.

August 25th will be Hoedowners "Hot August Nights" dance with refreshing cool melons and fruit.

Wow, summer goes by far too fast. Our Mainstream lessons start Wednesday September 12th. Daryl is a wonderful instructor and even experienced dancers will enjoy the review/brush up. We especially invite Hoedowners' recent graduates to come be an angel to help our new class, while helping themselves.

In the week before I wrote this the summer weather has shifted from comfortable to way too hot and back to comfortable. Remember if it shoots back up to too hot again, check the M'n M web page for whether it's hot enough to cancel.

Please note on your calendar that we will offer cooling, refreshing watermelon on August 18th to wind up the special summer dances.

By the time you read this our Plus DBD classes will be over for the season. We welcomed eighty different dancers to the classes. We hope that they will all come dance with us often.

June 13th was our Strawberries and ice cream dance. So many clubs wanted to participate in our strawberry dance! Wave Steppers, Saddlebrooke Squares, Harbor Haylofters, Cougars, Prairie Steppers, Stardust, Columbia River Dancers, and Independent dancers. Did you all come for the berries? I, personally wish strawberry season lasted all summer. Everyone was having too must have fun for it to have been just the berries.

June 27th took us "out to the ball game" dance. There WERE weenies, popcorn and yes, Cracker Jacks. As well as 52 dancers! Cougars, Prairie Steppers, Buzz'n Bees, Valley Squares, Ruff and Ruffles and Harbor Haylofters all joined us dancing with 4 squares on the floor. We enjoy a good turnout early for our Plus session from 7-8. Craig always has ways to stretch us and gives us a good challenge in Mainstream too.

We hope to continue with such wonderful variety of clubs dancing with us for August, the last month of our summer dances. (Remember us on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays.) It is getting close to school time so on our August 22nd dance we will be collecting school supplies for our charity contribution.

Plan to come for our big Octoberfest weekend October 12-14 at Rose Valley Grange, Kelso.

Lessons will be a little different this fall: twice a week – on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Plus starts at 6:30 and a combined basic/mainstream class from 7:30 to 9:00. The lessons will start on September 17th and will finish on November 7th.

R Square D dances at the Kelso Senior Center, Kelso/Longview WA. For more information about us please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our caller is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

We are enjoying our well attended dances. We now have 14 new members and they are coming to our dances and dancing very well. Our new graduates are coming and enjoying our dances and it is refreshing for our other members to see them dancing after their lessons. It is an investment in time and energy on the angel’s and instructors Mike’s and Julie’s part to help the students in class for those weekly classes and see the new dancers enjoying themselves now is great.

We are also happy with the turnout to our Plus dances too. We appreciate all the visitors and it does make it more fun with more dancers on the floor.

In August we have a Mainstream dance on the 4th and the theme is Hot August Night with Mike and Ken calling and cueing. With our air conditioning if it is hot outside it does not slow us down inside.

Then on August 18th our Mainstream dance theme is ’50s Sock Hop.

Our Plus dances are the 2nd, 16th, and 30th this month, that is three dances this month. Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt calling and cueing, intermediate Rounds from 7:00 to 7:30, and Plus dance from 7:30 to 9:30.

It has been a busy time with visitation dances included, we now have a bunch of banners that are waiting to return to their home club, please come visit us we really enjoy visitors, and we guarantee you a good time.

A list of banners we have is:

In June Tri Squares had a great time on our annual mystery trip. Sixteen of our members caravanned from Tigard to Fort Vancouver and danced in the gazebo on Officers Row. Then we took a scenic drive up the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge to Stevenson. Taking a very slow trip across the Bridge of the Gods (what an incredible view!) we had dinner at the Bridgeside Restaurant in Cascade Locks. Afterward we drove to Milwaukie to dance with Darrell Kalmbach and the River City Dancers whose hospitality was amazing!

In July and August we will be DARK but we've scheduled air-conditioned visitations to Valley Squares, Bachelor & Bachelorettes, Sunset Promenaders and the Hoedowners. Also in August we will have our annual picnic at Sherwood's Snyder Park again, up on a hill and under the trees to relax and share time together.

Our August 4th dance is "T-shirt Dance", wear your favorite T-shirt. I should have several, I used to print them. Scott Zinser is calling. August 18th dance is "Summer Fun" with Dan Nordbye calling. Come join us, lets have fun together.

Valley squares had a very busy month in June. Tuesday, June 3rd we had our last Jamboree. Then the rest of the Tuesday's in June we had Mainstream Workshops. We finished our classes before our dance in June. June 2nd was our Strawberry Dance with lots of Hood strawberries - they were good! June 16th was busy, we had a Community dance for a group from 2-5 pm, then our last class from 6-7 pm then our club dance from 7-10 pm. What a day of dancing, we were tired when we got through.

And last, but not least, TVC's dance, "Mainstream, Plus and Advanced". We had a good turnout and lots of fun, we danced until 10:30 pm. Of course, because we were co-hosting, we had the most members attending and won the TVC banner. See you in a square!

he Wave Steppers’ square dance and clogging demonstration at the Tillamook County Fair will be on Senior Day, Thursday, August 9th, from 1 to 1:45 pm on the county fair’s Courtyard Stage. Club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance and clogging instructor Gwen Kiel will choreograph the dancers.

Just two days later on Saturday, August 11th is the club’s “County Fair Dance,” which happens to be the last day of the Tillamook County Fair. That dance will feature club caller Joe Wrabek and line dancing with Gwen Kiel.

The Wave Steppers’ Anniversary Dance will be Saturday, September 8th. The club, under various names; the Skippers, Coast Swingers, and most recently the Wave Steppers, has been in business since sometime before 1900. We’ve danced on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi’s City Hall since the building was built in 1948. The Anniversary Dance will again be an Elvis Dance, with caller Mark Wheeler as Elvis and round dancing with cuer Connie Clark.

The last dance of the 2018 season, a “Fall Dance” Saturday, October. 13th, will again have club caller Joe Wrabek and line dancing with Gwen Kiel.

The Wave Steppers’ dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth Street (just a block off US 101, 9 miles north of Tillamook). About two-thirds of the second floor of City Hall is a dance floor, built in the 1940s for the old Firemen’s Balls.

The club’s free square dance classes taught by club caller Joe Wrabek continue on Wednesdays, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook.

Summer has arrived and we are enjoying the new cooling system that we installed last year! It is great to be dancing and staying cool throughout the summer months. If you are looking for a cool place to dance, come give the Buckeroo Barn a try!

Our mainstream class just graduated and we are enjoying seeing them out on the floor dancing. We will continue with a “funshop” to provide our new graduates with additional floor time until our new set of lessons begin in September. If you know anyone in the Roseburg area, be sure to let them know about the wonderful benefits of square dancing. Check out the flyers as they get posted for more information.

The Buckeroos are lucky to have the Umpqua Area Council sponsor dancing at the Douglas County Fair. Dancing at the fair is always a good time and provides an opportunity to expose the whole community to an activity we all love. If you are in the area, please plan to come and join us at the fair this year. We will be dancing each evening from 7 pm to 9 pm. Check out the flyer as there will be a different caller each evening. Friday evening the 10th of August will be a special evening as we will have Dale Roberson calling for us. He has over 50 years of calling experience and is a lot of fun! Hope to see you there! If you are a square dancer and wear your dance outfit and badge, you will get free admission to the fair…with the understanding that you will dance from 7 pm to 9 pm.

Happy dancing,
