Tim and I attended another weekend festival for the first time last month. We spent Labor Day in Port Orford for the Beachcombers’ Battlerock Festival with a great group of people and fun activities. Tim baked his first pie under Patty Cooper’s tutelage and even won 2nd place AND the People’s Choice Award!!! I hope that you have all had a chance to attend at least one new weekend festival this summer. We are hoping to attend at least one more weekend festival this year.
I am so happy to be working with the great group of the OFSRDC delegates, officers, dancers, callers, and cuers who are working on 2019 Oregon Summer Festival. This is definitely an Oregon Festival and is going to be an outstanding! I have to give you a sneak preview of some of our plans…..Summer Festival 2019 will kick off with a Trail’s End Dance on July 18 at the Salem Square Dance Center. The Caller MC will be Chuck Simpkins from Southern Oregon with Cuer MC Leonard Snodgrass from Northern Oregon. On Friday, July 19th we will be dancing on the Oregon Capitol Steps with Caller Leonard Snodgrass. After lunch and a couple hour break, Summer Festival will open at the Blanchet Catholic School in Salem, OR. Our featured caller will be Michael Kellogg from California. Our featured cuer will be MaryAnn Callahan, also from California. During the next 3 days – the weekend will be packed full of dancing fun and activities – there will be Rounds, Mainstream, Plus, Advanced, workshops, games, after parties, youth activities, open mic opportunities, a Heavenly Hoedown, vendors, and more. Be sure to mark your calendars!
This is my last article for the President’s Corner. In a few short days, we will be installing your new State President, Lorri McIntosh. It has been my honor to serve as your OFSRDC President, and I would like to thank all of the Officers and Delegates for their time and dedication to the OFSRDC, clubs, councils, dancers, callers, and cuers in throughout Oregon. Best wishes to Lorri and the new board. I know you will do a great job!
See you on the dance floor

Some people have suggested that it is time for another change in the OFN.
To be specific, many believe that no one reads the articles, the columns, or the club news items. They say most people are getting their club news from Facebook now, where things are posted immediately, instead of being seen weeks after they are written.
What do you think? Should we get rid of articles and news items, and have the OFN contain just flyers and Where & When info? Do you read the articles? Do you click on the advertisements? I'd love to get your feedback at timr@probo.com.
Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.
We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:
The Federation installed its 2018-19 officers at the September 23 meeting. Congratulations to Lorri McIntosh as the new President, Karyn Buchheit as 1st Vice President, Gary Clark and 2nd Vice President, Tim Hagey as Secretary, Lane Clem as Treasurer, and Patty Cooper as Membership.
The Federation's next executive board meeting will be on January 27 at the Holiday Inn Express in Albany in association with Mid-Winter Festival.
Oregon's Mid-Winter Festival 2019 will be held January 25, 26 and 27, 2019, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.
Start planning on attending the 2019 Summer Festival, to be held at the Blanchet School in Salem on July 19-21, 2019. This festival is sponsored by the entire Federation Board.
The 68th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, June 26-29, 2019.
The 68th NSDC is planning to have a "Wall of Honor" for Veterans and First Responders. If you have 5x7 photo of you or a family member in uniform, email it to or contact Connie Keener.
All clubs in the Oregon Federation are required to maintain their status as non-profit corporations with the State of Oregon. The Secretary of State's office mails out a renewal notice about a month before your registration expires every year. The following clubs expire this month:
October 3 -- Elkhorn Swingers
October 4 -- Dancing Friends
October 23 -- Bachelor Beauts

Aug. 24 saw Terry Halley calling with Jackie Gale cueing. We always enjoy having Terry down to call for us at the end of summer—it’s becoming an annual event as he will be calling next year too at the end of August. Betty was there with him and helped fill out some of the squares here and there. That night our Treasurer brought the left- overs from our club picnic so we had hamburgers and hotdogs as well as our regular finger foods. I think I see a pattern here. Single Trees love to eat as well as dance!
Please come join us for the new dance year. Jim Hattrick always calls our 2nd Friday dances, in September Craig Abercrombie and Al Frazier called our 4th Friday dance and in October George Hermann will be calling our Halloween dance Oct. 26.
Gaynor Hintz
Club reporter
Kris Jensen, national caller from Albuquerque, called for us September 9. What a treat!
We are so blessed that we get to dance to her fine calling a number of times during the year. Kris and Kurt's mom lives in Eugene now.
Remember that our hall is air conditioned and has a cushioned wood floor.
Happy Dancing,
Christina Corelli
Wolf Pack didn't dance on Sept 1 as it was Labor Day weekend and lots of people were busy. We started our lessons on the 11th of Sept with 3 clubs from Emerald Empire combining all of their lessons so we usually have a very good class.
Oct. 6 Wolf Pack/Boots & Sandals will be having a Spaghetti Dinner Dance. Dinner is at 6:30, plus at 7:30 and mainstream at 8:00. Dinner and dance is $10.00 per person. Dance only is $5 per adult/$2 per youth. My mouth is watering already.
Oct 27 Boots & Sandals/Wolf Pack will be having a Halloween dance, Spooky!
Don't miss out on all the fun and join us 1st & 4th Saturdays at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield.
Sandy Harris
Club reporter
We look forward to cooler, cleaner air and more clubs to dance with this Fall. See you in a Square. Carmen
We have several people who are interested in taking lessons which will begin September 18 at the Salem Square Dance Center. Anyone interested can check out our website cherrycitycloggers.com for more information.
It is also that time of year again when we will be electing officers for this upcoming year. We look forward to our new season. Georganne
Our regular dance season started on Sept. 8 with an enthusiastic crowd coming early for a tailgate party and then the dance. We're grateful to be able to continue dancing on the second and fourth Saturdays at the hall at the Congregational church with its lovely wood floor. In October, we're having our yearly Halloween dance on October 27, and it will be a fun and festive time! Happy Autumn everyone! Karen
Dee and Bert Mackaman, IWW Reporters
Our first dance of this season was on September 15. We are also doing a demon-stration dance at a local nursing home and one at the Farmers Market to publicize our lessons starting on the 16th of September. Our annual Black Light Dance is on the 3rd Saturday of October. Hope to see lots of dancers there. Marilyn York
The club is at the end of the summer season and we had our End of Summer dance on September 6. We started the new season of lessons Sept. 13 with Intro to Cha for those Phase 2 dancers who were ready to move up into easy Phase 3. Then there was a 30- minute workshop to have some floor time for Phase 2 and easy 3. Following that was some West Coast Swing lessons and then the 4+ and Easy 5 dancers closed out the evening. Our new schedule will continue on until about Mid-Winter and we will evaluate where we are with Cha and West Coast Swing. There is always room on our dance floor for visitors.
Our club has adjusted their lessons to include Phase 2 dancers who have no place to learn Phase 3. Normally before, we were only Phase 3 & 4. With the adjustment, we have some new faces joining us and hope to have more as we start the new season.
Our club is scheduled to help out with the Federation meeting on September 22-23. Not sure what we are doing yet, but I’m sure we will find out soon enough. Marilyn Schmit
Congratulations to our new Plus Dancers who graduated on September 5. Thirteen dancers received their Masters in Dancing Certificates and three of them are preteen dancers.
Our Annual Corn & Cluck Dance is September 21. We hope that you did not miss it. That Crazy Chicken always has something up his sleeve.
We have started another Beginning Square Dance Class on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. Thanks to all of the "Angels" who are helping assist with this class. Randy Dibble is also offering a Plus workshop from 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm following the Beginners class. Come on by if you would like to brush up on your Plus skills. The cost is $6.00 per dancer.
The Mid Willamette Area Fall Festival is September 29 at 7:30 pm at the Salem Square Dance Center. We are the hosts for the evening and Randy is the Caller MC.
We will have two dances in October, on Oct. 5 and Oct. 19. In November, we will dance three times, the 2nd, the 16th and the 30th. The 30th will be our 5th Friday Plus dance.
See you all on the dance floor. Sheila Machado
Our October dance is a regular dance with a Halloween theme in decorations - costumes are welcomed. Look ahead for our November dance - this is our ham dinner dance and we will be serving a ham dinner before the dance. Watch for the flyers for prices.
This report was turned in before Mom (Karyn Buchheit) went to the teen festival meeting. I will report next month on the location for next year's teen festival. Mom will have reported by then to the OFSRDC, Mid-Willamette Area Council and Mid-Winter Festival Committee and Summer Festival 2019 Committee. See you at a dance soon.
Petrina Buchheit
We start our new classes Sept 25 at the IOOF Hall (see flyer in Aug issue)
October 5 we have our annual TALK LIKE A PIRATE DANCE. It is one of our best attended dances of the year. The costumes are always very creative and fun and so is the dancing (fun and creative). Oct 19 we have a Pie dance with GIRLS NIGHT OUT CALLING AND CUEING. That should also be a lot of fun.
Bruce Lowther is our regular caller and Sandy Harris is our Cuer We dance the first and third Fridays with pre-rounds on the first Friday and Pre-Plus on the third Friday. We would love to have you join us for fun dancing and good company. Sandy
We are foregoing our annual fall square and round dance lessons in favor of supporting Sunday evening lessons at the Salem Hospital beginning Sept 16th, hosted by the Independence Wagon Wheelers. Any and all clubs are encouraged to take part either as students or angels.
Please note the meeting on Sept 22 of the Oregon Federation of Round and Square dance clubs for which Willamette Squares is the host. Meet that evening at the Salem Square Dance Center, 3695 45th Avenue, Salem OR. Submitted for Jodee Howard by Steve Hoots

The Happy Hoppers are in the adjustment period in our new home, the Washington Grange, located at 7701 NE Ward Road, Vancouver, WA. Unfortunately, our first dance in September needed to be canceled due to a previous rental by the Grange to another party. Undaunted, the Hoppers planned a visitation to the River City Dancers to replace the lost dance night. Therefore, our first real Hopper dance of the season will be October 6th. In the meantime, we are getting used to our new home during our plus and mainstream lessons which take place at 6:30 on Monday nights. By the time we get to our first dance we hope to be comfortably settled into our new home.
We are also pleased to be going back to our old schedule of dances starting at 7:30 with pre-rounds and then a plus dance at 8:00. We found that the 7:00 time seemed to be too early for many of our dancers. Hopefully, the 7:30 time will make it easier for people who have family or busy Saturday schedules.
We hope you mark your calendars and plan to join us at our new location for our first dance of the coming season.
Les Seeley was our guest caller for our first dance in September and our club caller Darrell Kalmback called the rest of our dances.
We continue to have club visitations each month. We visited Tri Squares in September to help them celebrate their 25th anniversary and our October visitation will be to the Seaside Sashay on October 27 at Seaside.
If you miss us at any of our club visitations, no fear. Just come to Milwaukie Community Center in Milwaukie any second or third Saturday evening and dance with us. We warmly welcome both couples and singles . We love having guests.
Don't forget about the "Game Basket" to benefit the next "Young at Heart" Dance. This dance will be next July. Exact date and place is yet to be determined.
If you have any games or puzzles to donate to this basket, let Lorri or Lois know. All proceeds will go to the "Young at Heart" or Youth Dance.
Lorri will have this basket at the dances she attends, so you can purchase raffle tickets.
The next "Fifth Friday" Council Dance will be November 30th, 2018 in Medford with Lawrence Johnstone calling and Rikki Lobato cueing. There will be Advanced from 630 to 730, then pre-rounds and Mainstream with Plus until 1030. Come on out and enjoy the fun. Lawrence always calls a fun dance.
There is now an "in progess" website for the council - you can check it out at: https://sites.google.com/view/roguesis-qcouncil/home
PLEASE support the Council and the Clubs in the Rogue Valley. Everyone needs all the support they can get. Times are "skinny," so, please come out and help by supporting your local clubs. We don't want to lose any clubs because of non-support from the dancers.
Don't forget, we have changed our meeting location. We are now at Round Table Pizza in Poplar Square. Our next meeting will be October 2, 2018 at 430pm.
Lois & Lorri
We had a Bust The Rust Dance on September 4th with Chuck & Rikki. Fun dance and a good way to prepare for classes that started on Thursday September 6th.

Special thanks to Richard for sharing his knowledge and stash of tapes!! We welcome anyone who is already an advanced dancer to join us and get more floor time!
The Charlie's were dark on the 15th to celebrate the Circle N Square 64th Birthday dance in Yreka. Dean Black and Rikki Lobato did a great job and it was a fun dance.

We are looking forward to gathering some knowledge on Dancer Retention with National Caller Eric Henerlau on Sept 22nd. This is a free seminar and a topic that is definitely needed in the world of square dancing. 230-430 at the Charlie dance hall. Don't miss it! Eric will be calling the early Advanced at The Star Promenaders and it will be a great day full of dancing and learning with Eric and then continue the fun with the Stars Peace dance with Bob Dingman and Phil Ramey doing the honors!!
There is a 5th Saturday dance in Roseburg with Michael Kellogg and Rikki Lobato - hope to see many of you there - it's going to be a party for sure!! We are still working on the future for the Rogue Squares. Come on out and help us make a comeback. You won'b be sorry.

Since the OFN is published mid month, you may still have time to plan on the two anniversary dances remaining in September: Toe Draggers will hold their Berry Good 43rd Anniversary Dance at the Kinton Grange on the 21st, KC Curtis calling and Bev Flint cueing; and the Tri Squares have their 20th Anniversary dance at the Tigard Grange on the 28th with national caller Adam Christman and Sandra Pinion cueing. See the individual club reports and flyers below for additional information
In addition, there is the Tri Council dance hosted by the Portland Area Council. The dance will be held at the Oak Grove Community Center, 14496 SE Cedar Avenue 97267 on the fifth Saturday in September, the 29th from 7PM to 11PM. Stephen Cole will be the featured caller with Ken Pratt cueing the rounds.

We have had a very strange summer with many dances and lessons canceled because of the heat. The officers have discussed the possibility of going dark in July and August of next year, but so far it is only talk. It is hard to decide as many want to dance in the summer, but without air conditioning the Grange does get hot. That is for next year, not now. Come dance with us. We make sure all get to dance, so single are more than welcome.
Lastly, beginning lessons start the first Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 and mainstream from 8:30-9. Jim Hattrick is our teacher and a fine job he does.
Remember to dance to the beat of the music and smile. It is more fun that way!
Nick Johnson
Since The Crew is rarely seen these days the Eager Beaver made a visitation to The Crew Dance on August 5th at the Aloha Grange. Dancers from all over have missed The Crew and showed up in force with seven squares on the floor most of the time and enough resting on the sideline to make another. Many people were happy to see friends they hadn't seen in a while. It was so wonderful to hear the boys again having the time of their lives. Thanks, guys!
This year we celebrate Columbus Day on October 8th. Traditionally Columbus Day is October 12th, but lately even that has become questionable. After all, Columbus never reached the mainland and others had reached these shores earlier. Also there were already a lot of people living on the islands who considered Columbus and his crew invaders. History depends a lot on your perspective and who writes it. As a reminder, since it is a Monday holiday for many people, it provides an opportunity for the employed to attend our dance.
We can be kids again and wear costumes October 31st just for fun and if somebody gets ambitious we might even have prizes. Most of us think that is too far ahead to plan a lot.
Even if you work on Mondays, you can join us once in a while; we dance every Monday, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our three great callers (Jim Hattrick, Daryl Clendenin, and Darrell Kalmbach) keep us on our toes as each week, always seeming to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. We dance from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club
Rachel Nettleton
Speaking of the Sashay, it is on October 26th and 27th. Hope to see you there. Call if there are any questions, Sylvia 503-325-8109 or Joyce Clark 503-647-5742.

We had so much fun on August 5th at our annual Hoedowner Hop’s Night! The weather was warm, and as the sun was setting an amazing group of people were looking forward to the coolness of the evening. Who could ask for more? Well, perhaps the Hops could have won but 11 runs were knocked in, unfortunately the majority were for Vancouver. It was one of those get togethers where you just have time to visit, catch up, laugh a lot and relax together.
On the 11th of August we had our “Here’s the Scoop Dance” with "Elvis' in the hall. Mark Wheeler was our guest caller, with Randy Lewis cueing. The next day the Hoedowners co-hosted the Hahn Barn dance.
We were prepared for the hot weather on the 25th for our “Hot August Nights” with refreshing cool fruit and melons.
Please join us on the 13th of October for our only dance of the month. We will be having our first “Pirates Booty” dance. ARRGH! Daryl Clendenin will be calling and Randy Lewis cueing. Yvonne Clendenin has retired as the Hoedowner’s cuer because of health.
We’re going dark on October 27th for the Seaside Sashay. Hope we see across the Square at the Seaside Convention Center!
Krystal Laas
Our birthday dance, October 20th, will have 7:00 p.m. plus, 7:30 prerounds, and mainstream from 8:00-10:00, at which time the dance will end, and we will go downstairs for Birthday Cake.
Patty Bonney
We have danced our final summer dance and I saw 6 squares on the floor. We have had this kind of participation all summer. This was especially nice as there was also a big pile of school supplies donated so we will be able to help 2 of our local schools this year.
REMEMBER: September began our regular dance schedule: 2nd Friday, 4th Saturday. Plus: 7pm - 8pm, Mainstream with rounds: 8 - 10pm; PLAN to come for our big Octoberfest weekend October 12-14 at Rose Valley Grange, Kelso. See our flyer for the many activities we have arranged for your weekend.
R Square D dances at 106 NW 8th, Kelso/Longview WA. Our website www.r-square-d.info is a great way to keep track of our club and events or friend us on Facebook. Our caller is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.
Annie Tietze
On October 20th Mike Stout will be the caller and we will have a guest cuer, Julie Stiers. The dance theme is Halloween with costumes encourages but not required.
Plus dances are on October 4th and 18th with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Ken Pratt cueing. Dance times are 7:00 to 7:30 intermediate rounds, 7:30 to 9:30 plus dance.
Seaside Sashay is on October 26th and 27th this year at the Convention Center with Scott Zinser and Darin Keith calling and Debbie Taylor cueing. This festival is always a lot of fun and a lot of dancing. Get your ribbons now or pay at the door, and get your lodging soon to avoid “sold out”. The registration form is on the OFN site under special dances, or call Joyce Clark 503-647-5742.
Tom & Janice Sminia
Our lessons have started, they are taking place at the Kinton Grange on Wed, evenings at 7:00 pm. Please send all interested persons our way.
October 5th is our regular dance for the month, but then don't go too far away, because Sunday October 7th is the "Man enough to wear Pink" dance. The fun starts at 2:00, and there will be many wonderful baskets to be raffled off.
DIFFERENT LOCATION: Our October 17th dance will be at the IOOF hall in Hillsboro. This will be a costume dance with the theme A Viking Dance. This should be a very fun and interesting dance, don't miss it.
October 28th is our Jamboree and if you bring all your students it is sure to be a Howling Halloween themed party! This is also a canned food drive. Please see our flyer in the OFN for times of this event.
Come have some fun with the Toes!
Kathy Degman
In October we plan to visit the Sunset Promenaders for their 33rd anniversary and have our “Apple Fest Dance” on the 13th and “Blast From the Past Dance” on the 26th. All our members are looking forward to the “Seaside Sashay” on the 27th.

Advanced lessons, also taught by Randy Dibble were to begin immediately following MS lessons Tuesdays 8-9:30 p.m., $6.If there are no new students, this will become an “A” workshop.
In August we pulled out our flowered shirts and skirts and put flowers in our hair for our annual Hawaiian Luau Dance. We had three squares and danced to upbeat party swizzle music that makes you want to get up and dance!
If you’ve been to our 2nd Friday Plus Dance lately you may have noticed we have a slightly new format as we are incorporating an ‘A’ Tip instead of just pre-rounds in the first 30 minutes. Also if there are enough ‘A’ dancers still around after 10, there could be another ‘A’ Tip at the end.
In September don’t forget our rockin’ to the 50’s Mainstream Dance (Friday, September 28th). Put your hair in a ponytail and come show off your poodle skirt! We square up at 7:30 for Plus with MS and Rounds from 8-10:30 p.m.
Please note the 5th Saturday (September 29th) Advanced Dance held in Woodburn is cancelled this month.(There isn’t another 5th Saturday until December, and as of right now there is no news to report about this dance.)
Our October Mainstream Dance is a regular dance, October 26th called by Randy Dibble and cued by Julie Stiers. Come out to Newberg for a fun evening of dancing.
Looking ahead, in November we will have our Gospel Dance (Friday, November 23rd), so save the date for this annual favorite. Dan Nordbye will be the caller and Julie Stiers will be cueing.
Josie Rosenbury
Anniversary dances have started for the new year and we plan on attending as many as possible. We are making plans for our 70th on April 6, 2019. Speaking of anniversary dances, we will be DARK on October 6th to be able to attend Sunset Promenaders Anniversary dance.
Our October 20th dance, "Monster Mash" with Janienne Alexander calling, will be a lot of fun. Dress like a monster if you like or anything else, but costumes are not required. We will have fun and dance, dance, dance no matter what we wear (just don't come naked).
Carolene Siebert
The Wave Steppers’ dances are held at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth Street (just a block off US 101, 9 miles north of Tillamook). About two-thirds of the second floor of City Hall is a dance floor, built in the 1940s for the old Firemen’s Balls.
The club’s free square dance classes taught by club caller Joe Wrabek continue on Wednesdays, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tillamook Elks Lodge, 1907 Third St. in downtown Tillamook.
