I appreciate the feedback I got from my note last month. Although there are some who would favor a change, it appears that the great majority are happy with the way things are. So, for now we will stay the course. Thanks to those who commented.

High School seniors and College freshmen this is information for you!!! Also, if you know of a youth square dancer of these ages – please pass this on to them. There are two scholarships available for youth dancers from Oregon.
The United Square Dancers of America offer a $1,000 scholarship - USDA Founders Memorial Youth Scholarship. The deadline for this is February 1st so it is important to get started on the application soon. There are two forms needed: the scholarship application http://www.usda.org/trifold/IS-Y04.pdf and the USDA Affiliate President Nomination Form http://www.usda.org/trifold/IS-Y06.pdf . These links are to the pdf format. You can print the forms in a word format by going to http://www.usda.org/youth.htm In addition to the filled out forms, you will need 3 letters of recommendation (one needs to be from someone in your local square dance club) and a 500 word essay on “The impact square dancing has had on my life.”
The Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs is offering $500 scholarship. The complete application must be Scholarship applications must be turned in by May 1, 2019. Applications can be completed and submitted online through the Oregon Federation website http://www.squaredance.gen.or.us/ScholarshipApp.php They can also be submitted by snail mail to: Karyn Buchheit, 6122 Brush Creek, Silverton, OR 97381. Any questions, please call Karyn Buchheit at 503-873-5241 or by email at buchheitfarmkm@gmail.com Grades will be a minor consideration. Financial need is not a consideration. At least one $500 Educational Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit to a youth dancer who meets the following guidelines.
I will have application forms for both scholarships at the youth table at Mid-Winter Festival. However, I don’t recommend waiting until after Mid-Winter to put together the application packet for the USDA scholarship since that is so close to the deadline.

Lloyd Larson, a long-time square dancer in the McMinnville area, passed away of natural causes on August 26.
Lloyd was born in Glendale, California on January 20, 1948 and moved to Oregon at a young age with his family. He grew to become an amazing man and successful business owner of "Lafayette Auto Body", in Lafayette, Oregon. Since then, he had retired and moved to Salem. During this time, he was active in his church at Willamette Valley Baptist Church in Aumsville, OR and involved with his square dancing. In 2012, he moved to Tucson, Arizona to warmer weather. Beloved Lloyd Jeralde Larson passed away on the 26th of August peacefully while sleeping of natural causes in Tucson, Arizona at the young age of 70.
Lloyd is survived by one brother, Tom Larson and a sister, Joanne Clay, four children, Wade McGowan, Julie Schaffroth, Jeana McAllister and Kristina Larson and seven grandchildren.
Lloyd was a man of God and lived a humble life. He loved to go deep sea fishing, work on cars, square dance calling/dancing and to grow a ton of fruit in his yard; didn't matter if it was a desert, he still made it happen. He loved his family, friends and animals who would keep him company. He was loved by many and will definitely be missed on this God given Earth! Until we see each other again, may Lloyd Rest in Peace with our Father in heaven. PS I'll do my best to bring you that Humdinger that you craved so much! I love you Daddy!
Services will be held in Salem at Court Street Christian Church on October 6, 2018 at 1 pm. Located at 1699 Court St NE, Salem OR 97301

The callers and cuers always have a meeting at 6:30 before each CCCA dance.
We had a small but very fun dance September 29.
Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli will be calling and cueing a New Year's Eve dance. 8:30 - Pre-Rounds with Christina and 9:00 - Midnight is Mainstream and Plus with Roger. We'll do a tip in 2019! Any callers or cuers present New Year Eve will be asked if they'd like to call and;/or cue. Sounds like a fun way to bring in 2019! Please bring a pie to share. The first time we did this there were over 30 pies. Needless to say we have pies for a few dancers after that! We’ll have a fruit and/or veggie tray as well. Come help us welcome 2019!
Keep on dancing, calling and cueing for FUN
Christina Corelli
Secretary - CCCA
We'll also have a Silent Auction. The Silent Auction is pretty amazing!
Please join us November 17 for a full day of FUN!. We'll be in Hall B. Please park in the back.
We continue to dance Sunday nights from 5:30 - 8:00 at all levels with our competent caller and teacher, Tim Matteson. We encourage dancers to come dance with us and get more floor time. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 to make sure we are dancing as we go dark once in a blue moon. We don't want to miss you. Our dances/classes are always casual. We always have a lot of food too. Come for a fun evening almost every Sunday!
We will be dark November 18.
Remember that our hall has a cushioned wood floor.
Happy Dancing,
Christina Corelli

Due to lack of participation, our lessons for this season were cancelled, but our cuer, Sandra Pinion, is continuing her Round Dance classes. Carmen
At press time we are looking forward to spicing up our Saturday November 3 Dance with a Halloween theme. So put on your scariest costume (optional), come on out to the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall, and join in the fun.
Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays at Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall and by all means don’t miss our upcoming special dances: November 3 Halloween Dance; December 8 Christmas Dance; March 9 IWW Birthday Dance; April 13 Easter dance. Hope to see you across a square! Dee and Bert Mackaman
Ken and Dianne Pratt are kind enough to come every other week with Stephanie Lozano and Leonard Snodgrass filling in the other week. Leonard is coming along well with learning how to cue and his timing is getting better with each time he gets on stage. Continued success, Leonard. Stephanie takes constant notes to work on her teaching skills and seems to be getting more comfortable with the educator status she has accepted in our club. Come and visit us to see the fun we can have each week.
We will be assisting Ken and Dianne as they host the New Year’s Eve dance at the Salem Square Dance Center. Details will follow soon. Marilyn Schmit
Our November dance is also our Ham Dinner. Please check out our flyer. Dinner is at 7:00 pm and is $4.00 per person in addition to regular dance. Come join us for a great dinner followed by great dancing!
We do have a couple of students this year for lessons. And all of them are youth who are also interested in competition. Speaking of competition - if you have youth in your club who are interested - have them contact Karyn Buchheit so we can get them included! See you in a square. Petrina Buchheit
With this important event behind us, we are looking forward to our 24th birthday dance which will be Halloween themed, costumes encouraged but optional. The regular Saturday night dance will be dark but The Birthday Dance will be held Sunday afternoon October 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the SSDC. It never fails that we have an enjoyable time at all our dances.
Willamette Squares are foregoing their traditional fall lessons to support the Wagon Wheeler’s effort in offering Sunday evening classes at the Salem Hospital.
Looking forward to seeing you in a square. Jodee Howard
Vice-President Egan is working on passports for new dancer’s jamborees, similar to the passport program that the TVC council has had for many years.
The PAC and TVC will be co-hosting an Alzheimer’s Benefit Dance May 19, 2019. Details later.
Our class is going great and it seems to make a difference in having classes just before our regular dance. At least there are plenty of angels there, who would otherwise just be sitting around.
We’ve got some really choice dances coming up. Check out the When and Where section.
Prudy Prunit is still eyeing the big tree in our parking lot, wanting to chop it down. It bombards all the cars underneath with all sorts of debris. On the other hand, the only cars parking beneath it belong to the club officers so the general membership is fine with it, not to mention the Grange Beautification Committee. Update: At our general meeting, our board awarded Prudy the contract to chop down the tree, all voting “aye” except club florist Gerry Geranium. The tree will be gone very soon.
Petula Petticoat
The Buzzin' Bees are saddened by the sudden unexpected loss of our Dear Friend and Family member Evelyn Kinder.
Evelyn always had a smile for everyone who came to our dance and you could find her at the door and greeting people most every dance night. She was one of the reasons that the Bees have such great door prizes. We will all miss Evelyn greatly.
Several Cut-Ups will be attending the Rivco Square and Round Dance Festival in Indio, CA, November 8-11th. Hopefully, they will have a warmer climate, an escape from the rain, and some hot dancing!
We have a great mainstream class going with Scott Zinser and will be hosting a new dancer Jamboree on Dec. 2nd. Come and bring your club’s new dancers and students.
We will be gearing up for Christmas. Traditionally, the Cut-Ups get together and decorate a tree and the Barn for the Holidays. We will enjoy our club Christmas Party on Dec. 15th. We will also be hosting a fifth Saturday dance in December, to plan to come to our all plus level dance with Jim Hattrick. We will not be holding a New Year’s Eve Dance this year.
Beverly De La Bruere
November will be our second month of holding dances at the Washington grange. We are adjusting to our new surroundings and adapting to doing some things a bit differently. However, we still have the same friendly club members, a great caller, and wonderful guests who come to visit our club and dance with us. You can’t beat that combination.
Due in part to our move to a new location and our ability to let people know we are settled in and ready to share our love of dance with our students, lessons are off to a bit of a slow start. This year our club is holding eight week lesson sessions, so, hopefully the next session will see a larger group of students joining our class. We are planning a gently used clothing resale for our students and any other interested square dancers during our lesson time on Monday, November 12th. There is always a large selection of clothes which we sell for amazing low
prices. Our hope is to provide very affordable clothes for our new dancers and anyone else wishing to add to their dance wardrobe. If you have been to one of our sales, you know what a great selection we have. It’s actually a lot of fun to find some of the treasures just waiting to be taken home as your next perfect square dance outfit. We hope to see you at our sale or at one of our next dances.
Jean Tolstrup
We continue to have visitations to other mainstream clubs each month. Our last visitation was to Tri Squares anniversary dance. We brought two squares and we were the visiting club with the most members in attendance. It was a fun dance. Our next visitation will be to the Seaside Sashay on Saturday October 27. Look for us in our blue and white club outfits and come join us in a square.
We dance every second and third Saturday at Milwaukie Community Center at SE 42nd and Jackson. Our October 20th dance will be our Halloween dance. Costumes are encouraged but not required. All dancers are always welcome at our dances and we love visitors. Come dance with us.
Again, don't forget the "Game Basket" to benefit the next "Young at Heart" Dance. This dance will be next July. The precise date and place is yet to be decided. If you have any games or puzzles to donate to this basket, let Lorri or Lois know. All proceeds will go to the "Young at Heart" or Youth Dance. Lorri will have this basket at all the dances she attends, so you can purchase raffle tickets.
With the demise of the Rogue Squares, the Rogue Sis-Q Council has taken sponsorhip of the "Pajamarama" on January 11, 2019. This will become an annual "New Dancer" dance. The Callers & Cuers sponsor "New Dancer" dances in December and February, so this should be an excellent fit and give the newbies one more arena to practice their newly learned skill.
Don't forget, there is a 5th Friday Council Dance on November 30th at Rogue Valley Square Dance Center on Table Rock Road in Medford. There will be Advanced from 6:30 to 7:30, Pre-Rounds from 7:30 to 8:00 and Mainstream/Plus from 8:00 to 10:30ish. The caller is Lawrence Johnstone and the Cuer is Rikki Lobato. Please plan to attend because this will be a very good dance.
The next Council meeting will be December 4, 2018 at Round Table Pizza in Poplar Square.
Lois & Lorri
We had 1 dance in October - and everyone had a fabulous time! Sarge & Chuck were the cuer and caller and there were a lot of smiles and happy feet!!
We were dark for Potato Festival in Klamath Falls; and hope that Charlie dancers were able to head over the mountain to enjoy a great time!! There is a potluck prior to pre rounds!!! Check out the flyer for more info.

Our 51st birthday dance is fast approaching on 12/1 - we are so excited to welcome Michael Kellogg & MaryAnn Callahan!!! We will have early advanced as well as MS & Plus tips and rounds!! Flyers will be out soon!! Mark your calendar now to come and visit. Charlie's always put on a party - and this year will be no exception!!!
We look forward to dancing with lots of our friends soon!!
See you in a square!
On September 22, the club members (6 of the 7 existing members) had a meeting and voted to dissolve the club. There just hasn't been the support and participation necessary to maintain a club the way it was meant to be.
As of October 11, 2018, the Rogue Squares was officially absorbed into the Star Promenaders Square Dance Club.
The Pajamarama will be sponsored by the Rogue Sis-Q Council and remain a "New Dancer" dance.
We will see you all in a square somplace, we are sure.
Take care and God Bless all of you who DID come out to support us.
Carl & Lois Muck, Bonnie & Relfe Patterson, Debbie Cretton, Frances Ramey, & Elaine Funk
Classes are going well. They got off to a slow start, but are going strong now. We even have a couple of dancers who are former dancers and are refreshing the activity.
We will start a Plus class on Monday, October 22nd. Come on out from 6:30 to 8:30 for the class to refresh or learn. We have a great time. Phil is a lot of fun.
Our "Game Night" in October was great fun. The potluck was "An Old-Fashioned Potluck" theme. There was some good food. Of course, you and I know, that potlucks are always "good food." Square dancers are some pretty darn good cooks. At lest on game night, we don't have to try to get out and dance after we eat. The sound of dominoes on the tables will not allow anyone but the deaf to take a nap after eating.
The next "Game Night" is yet to be decided. We are leaning toward January, but it isn't for sure. We will keep you posted. What a lot of fun we have. Some Friday night when we are having "Game Night" come out and join us. It is a "Hoot." If you don't play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on or if there is some other "Game" you would like to play, let us know. We are open to most any table game.
Wayne's Advances class began on October 10 with a couple of newer dancers. There were also some "refreshing" dancers. The class is from 6 to 7:30pm. The workshop is from 730 to 8:30pm or so.
Quite a few Stars will be present at the Potato Festival in Klamath Falls. I know a great time will be had by all!! Thanks to Denny Fullerton and her crew for putting on a great party.
Square thru 3, no 4, no 5 - oh heck, see you next month!
On Friday, September 21st the Kinton Grange was rocking with 109 dancers. The Toe Draggers 43rd Berry Good Anniversary dance was indeed very good! KC Curtis, Darrell Kalmbach, and George Hermann called a great dance. Bev Flint and Patty Hermann cued. Eleven of the thirteen TVC clubs were in attendance.
Also on a Friday, September 28th, the TriSquares held their 20th Anniversary dance at the Tigard Grange. Several of the old timers mentioned that the Grange had not had that many dancers in a long, long time. That number was 132, over 16 squares. Guest national caller Adam Christman suggested that the dancers checkerboard their squares, a concept new to some. Sandra Pinion cued the rounds for the evening.
Since the OFN is published mid month, you may still have time to plan on the Mix 'N Mingle anniversary dance on October 20th. See their flyer for format information. They are dancing Mainstream for this dance.
Ferrous Steinka
Then comes turkey and football. The following Saturday means it is time to get off the couch, tighten up the shoes and get to dancing off some of the potatoes and gravy with Dan Nordbye and Julie Stiers. It is always a great way to start the holiday season.
As usual, our dances are plus from 7-8 and mainstream the rest of the evening. Our dances are at the Hazel Dell Grange.
The Columbia River Dancers were saddened to hear of the passing of our good friend Dorothy Lowder at the end of September. She loved to cue and loved to teach. When she taught she always wanted you to do the moves correctly. I ask that you take some time to remember her in your prayers. As you think of Dorothy please also keep Hoyt in your heart as well as he adjusts his life in this difficult time.
Nick Johnson
We will be recognizing veterans on Monday, November 12th, for their service here and abroad. Amazingly we have a few WWII veterans in our club! They are the tough ones.
Nineteen Eager Beavers attended the Toe Draggers 43rd Anniversary Dance plus ice-cream social September 21st. Three callers and two cuers provided the one hundred nine dancers a variety of Plus, Mainstream, and Rounds so everyone had plenty of exercise. They needed it because Toe Dragger bakers are awesome and with ice-cream we all took some extra baggage home. Thanks for a great dance.
So you can truly enjoy that delicious Thanksgiving dinner you have to train for it. Do twice as much dancing as you did last month so you can afford another helping.
Reminder that Daylight Savings Times changes to Standard Time November 4th. It is set your clock back (fall back) day. You would not want to arrive too early unless food is being served.
Even if you work on Mondays, you can join us once in a while; we dance every Monday, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our three great callers (Jim Hattrick, Daryl Clendenin, and Darrell Kalmbach) keep us on our toes as each week, always seeming to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. We dance from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club

On Friday, September 21st,a group of Hoedowners ventured to the Kinton Grange for the Toe Draggers 43rd Very Berry Anniversary dance. Almost 14 squares, 109 folks, danced to the lively calling of KC Curtis and Darrell Kalmbach. With almost two squares in attendance, the Hoedowners brought home one of our banners.
The following day we held our Farmer’s Market Dance celebrating the plentiful produce we enjoy here in Oregon. It’s a celebration of the harvest, farmers and their labors, and the bounty of gardens. This year our dance was hopped up by an unscheduled guest. It was Barley, the mascot of the Hillsboro Hops minor league baseball team. The Hoedowners enjoy their annual summer party at a Hops game but it came as a total surprise when Barley decided to join us and try square dancing. I must say Barley is a natural. The after-dance buffet was excellent as usual; apples, pears, corn baked items and no barley.
On September 28th we enjoyed a visitation to the TriSquares in Tigard for their 20th Anniversary. Several of us started at Busters for some barbeque before the dance. We had over two squares at the Tigard Grange packed with 132 folks, over 16 squares. Adam Christman, guest caller for the night, had us dancing checkerboard which for some was new. Once again, the Hoedowners retrieved one of our banners.
Looking ahead, November 10th will be our 11th annual Turkey Toss Dance. I have no idea who proposed this dance all those years ago but it is always a winner. (Editors note: It was Mary T. Withers who came up with the idea and name.) You can be a winner too by joining us in a bean bag toss for a turkey for you table. We’ve tried to figure a way to toss turkeys without damaging the floor or straining backs but haven’t come up with anything yet. Don’t miss out!
We’ll be holding a Soup Dance on Saturday November 24th. November always seems like soup weather and the buffet table will have soups of all kinds. I think I may be headed to some local restaurants for a bit of “souper” inspiration. I promise the unusual.
Krystal Laas
We will be back November 17th, welcoming you to another fun dance called by Randy Dibble and cued by Jeanine Norden. It's also time to think about the Canned Food Dance December 15th. Stock up early to be prepared. It's handy that there is a barrel at the grange to hold all items until time for distribution. If you will be elsewhere December 15th, we will be happy to have your food items early or late (or both.)
Patty Bonney
Getting petticoats fluffed and outfits matched is part of our regular dance season, our serious attire consideration. This is something I hear regarding "modern square dancing". Some new dancers are not interested in our traditional dance attire which, in truth, is much more folksy than modern. As we are trying to entice new dancers, we might begin the conversation among ourselves and see if we can begin a shift toward more modern. What would it be?
On November 9th we will honor our Veterans with free admission. Speaking of attire, there should be lots of red, white and blue.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 24th, we will try to balance calories from our Thanksgiving feast and exercise. Thank you, Craig, for always keeping us moving briskly.
R Square D dances at 106 NW 8th, Kelso/Longview WA. Our website www.r-square-d.info is a great way to keep track of our club and events or friend us on Facebook. Our caller is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks, 7-8 Plus and advanced rounds, 8-10 Mainstream with rounds. Our website will have Octoberfest events highlighted... look to see if there is a picture of you.
Annie Tietze
Our dance schedule is 7:00 to 7:30 Intermediate Rounds and 7:30 to 9:30 Mainstream Square dance with a Plus tip at the end. Mike Stout is our caller, and Ken Pratt our cuer.
Our three Plus dances in November are the 1st, 15th, 29th with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Ken Pratt cueing. Dance times are same as our mainstream dances; 7:00 to 7:30 intermediate rounds, 7:30 to 9:30 plus dance.
If you have not been to our hall before we have good parking on the street or at the bank parking lot across the street. Our hall has a nice wood floor, a separate dining room, air-conditioning, great callers and cuer, and friendly people who like to see visitors. We are located in the Odd Fellows Hall, 267 E. Main St. in downtown Hillsboro.
In November and December, we are having a food drive for the less fortunate in our neighborhood, we appreciate all non-perishable food choose to donate. Thanks.
Tom & Janice Sminia
On September 28th the Toe’s had the 2nd largest attendance at the Tri-Squares Anniversary dance. That just goes to show that Square and Round dancing is very much alive and kicking in Oregon!
Our dance on November 2nd is a regular fun dance, with Bev cueing pre-rounds at 7:30. Then on November 16th we will have the Harvest Dance with KC calling pre-plus at 7:30. Both of these dances are a canned food drive, so feel free to bring along a can or two for those less fortunate.
Kathy Degman
On Saturday November 10th we'll have lots of pie at the "Grateful Harvest Pie Party", and on Friday the 23rd (the day after Thanksgiving) we'll be dark.
Gloria Davis
Our 50’s dance in September was great fun despite some of our regular members away.
Several of our members attended the successful Toe Draggers’ Anniversary Dance, and we had a square and stole a banner from the Sunset Promenaders at their amazing Anniversary Dance. We are planning a visitation to the M&M's later this month for their MS Anniversary Dance.
Our October Mainstream Dance is a regular dance, October 26th, called by Randy Dibble and cued by Julie Stiers. Come out to Newberg for a fun evening of dancing together. Several members will be attending the Seaside Sashay this weekend.
Friday, November 23rd, is our Gospel Dance. Dan Nordbye will be the guest caller and Julie Stiers will be cueing. This has been an annual favorite for many, and we sure hope you will come out and dance with us!
Josie Rosenbury
Valley Squares visited both the Toe Draggers and Tri-Squares Anniversary Dances, September 21st and 28th. It's always great fun and lots of energy to dance to a crowded floor and to visit with everyone.
November 3rd will be our Tailgate Party dance with Hot Dogs, Chili and Cheese before the dance. Scott Zinser will be calling and Connie Clark cueing. On November 17th we will have a Veterans Day dance with Renee Ruud calling and Connie cueing. Check our flyers, web site and Facebook for details.
Carolene Siebert
Please call if you have any questions.
Frank Schuchard
Our mainstream class just finished their third week of classes. We have 23 first time students along with a few “reboot” students. They are moving right along and doing a fabulous job. We will welcome them to our Harvest Dinner and Dance on November 17th. Mark Wheeler will be coming from Portland to call the dance for us.
We are getting ready for our 2nd Annual Buckeroo Crafting Bazaar. It will be held on Friday, December 7th from 10-6, and on Saturday, December 8th from 8-4. There will be all kinds of great holiday gifts for all of your loved ones. Mark your calendar and plan now to spend the weekend shopping at the barn!
We are only a short drive down Interstate 5 and we love visitors! Think about joining us on the dance floor sometime soon!
Happy dancing,
Robin Faltersack
