Oregon Federation News
January 2019

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 19 January 2019
President's Corner

The holidays are almost over and the New Year approaches. Wouldn’t it be great to continue this same joy and fellowship throughout the New Year 2019? Most of us snuggled up in front of the fireplace (or woodstove) enjoying what so many do not have. We have so much to be thankful for.

Recently I received a message informing me that club membership is down in several clubs and what was I going to do about it. I must say it’s not just club membership that is decreasing, but dancers in general are reducing in numbers as we get older and the younger generation have better things to do than square dance. It’s not my fault, your fault, or anyone else’s fault. It’s just a fact that many groups are having to find new ideas to combat the diminishing numbers. We can all remember when the numbers at any dance was over 100, state festivals were in the thousands, and National Conventions had higher numbers of dancers. I was recently looking at a directory from 1976 where Rogue Sis Q Council had 13 clubs on it’s roster, now we have 3 clubs. We can all remember when, but that’s not going to help today or tomorrow.

What do we do? Brainstorm for new ideas, and ways to encourage others to join this wonderful activity? Maybe have a little more tolerance for those who don’t dance as well, give them time to perfect their moves, encourage instead of discourage the new dancer. We all started as beginners once. Remember those trending fashion frenzies when we were young? Start accepting the fashion frenzies of the current young uns and let them dance. Whatever we do, we need to maintain tolerance, patience, and enjoy what we do with anyone who wishes to participate.

Recently I read an article about the history of Square dancing. It mentioned that square dancing is uniquely American. The numbers died down with urbanization and the dance was left behind and almost forgotten. Then it was built back up by finding ways to encourage new dancers to participate. The early 1900’s brought square dancing back into existence. We need to find ways to build it back up again. Let’s get together and share ideas.

Oregon has square dance clubs in several cities, towns, and are within driving distance for anyone. Get out and support the clubs and councils. And remember that old saying “Square Dancing is friendship set to music”, this isn’t a new concept.

Lorri McIntosh
OFSRDC President

Editor's Note

Another year has come to a close. Beginner's classes are in full swing, and we are rapidly approaching another Mid-Winter Festival. Take the time to join your class members in the new dancer's hall, and show them what a friendly group of people we all are.

Our next scheduled Fifth Saturday Dance, December 29, has been cancelled because it's two days away from the New Year's Eve dance.

Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli will be calling and cueing a New Year's Eve dance. 8:30 will be Pre-Rounds with Christina. Then we'll dance mainstream with plus tips and rounds until 2019! Roger will call one tip into the new year. Wow! Can you believe it'll be 2019? Hard to believe! Any callers or cuers present New Year Eve will be asked if they'd like to call and/or cue. Sounds like a fun way to bring in 2019! Please join us as we celebrate each time zone's midnight into 2019! It's fun as Roger was raised in Chicago. We'll do New York, Chicago, Ontario, Oregon and then Eugene/Springfield. We party all night. The cost for this evening of FUN is back to the 80's! $2.50 per person! That's right! $2.50! Please bring a pie. Other goodies will be available too. We'll celebrate at midnight with more noise makers and sparkling cider.

Keep on dancing, calling and cueing for FUN

We only had one dance in the month of November having decided earlier this year to go dark on the Friday following Thanksgiving due to poor turnout in previous years. Our Veterans Remembrance Dance was fairly well attended with three to four squares on the floor for Jim Hattrick’s calling and a full floor of round dancers for Jackie Gale’s cueing. As always Jim and Jackie did a great job for us. There were many wearing red, white and blue with 12 veterans in attendance who were able to dance free of charge that night in honor of their service for our country. My thanks to Becky Lemler who took the photo of the group during the dance (photo available in the photo section).

The next night several Single Tree members attending the Turkey Dance in Sweet Home. We got a double dose of Jim Hattrick and Jackie Gale that weekend. While the numbers were down from previous years there was still a good crowd of happy dancers who enjoyed the fine turkey dinner with all the trimmings. It was fun getting to visit a little with all the dancers we don’t get to see except perhaps at Mid-Winter.

One Dec. 1st Single Trees combined with Whirl-A-Ways to visit the Independence Wagon Wheelers in Rickreall. What a fun dance! Perhaps because of the Christmas season neither club could muster a square so no banners were gathered. Still we had a good time and enjoyed George Hermann’s calling as well as his grandson Mike Kious. The photo of the visitation group can be seen in the photo section.

We continue to dance Sunday nights from 5:30 - 8:00 at all levels with our competent caller and teacher, Tim Matteson. We encourage dancers to come and dance with us and get more floor time. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 to make sure we are dancing as we go dark once in a blue moon. We don't want to miss you. Our dances/classes are always casual. We always have a lot of food too. Come for a fun evening almost every Sunday!

We were so lucky to have Kris Jensen, national caller from Albuquerque call for us two weeks in a row. Kris and Kurt's mom lives in Eugene. Kris called for Cast-a-Shadow, our advanced club and even called a Challenge tip. She's good!

Come join us Sunday evenings for FUN, fellowship, dancing and FOOD. We do have lots of food. And, it's warm in our hall which has a cushioned wood floor.

Happy Dancing,

Christina Corelli

Wolf Pack is still struggling. We had 2 theme dances lately. One was a spaghetti dinner dance but hardly anyone came.

Dec. 1st we had our Christmas dance and bake sale with barely a square in attendance.

I sincerely hope that we can keep afloat but with everything going out and not much coming in the future is looking pretty bleak.

We have fun even when no one comes, but if you would join us, it would brighten our dances.

The first MWA New Dancer’s Dance for the season was held on November 25 at the Salem Square Dance Center, hosted by the Braids and Braves. Seven or eight squares filled the floor all afternoon, with a total of close to 100 dancers in attendance. The caller instructors are doing a super job as we saw very few breakdowns. A fun time was had by all.

Happy New Year everyone! We hope your holidays were peaceful and festive too. Our New Dancers' Dance is on January 12 and we look forward to it. And soon we’ll all be enjoying Mid-Winter Festival.

Coming up in March is our annual Coast Trip, on March 8 and 9, when we'll be dancing both nights at Gleneden Beach Community Club. All are welcome! I know it’s a tossup what kind of weather we’ll have, but the Oregon coast is a lovely spot even on a blustery day. Karen

Our Fall Mainstream Class is about to graduate. The class members are dancing with more skill, confidence, and flair every week. They all did great at their first New Dancer Dance on November 25. We are very proud of them and are eager to show them off at Mid-Winter. Well done, George Hermann, club caller and mainstream class instructor! And hats off to our IWW Membership Chair, Dave O’Neil, for an excellent job of organizing and coordinating the fall lessons. Also, many thanks to Salem Hospital for allowing us to hold our classes at the hospital.

Our dance on December 8 was our Annual Christmas Dance and Silent Auction. The auction was a success permitting us to make a substantial contribution to Windsor House, our club’s chosen charity. To add to the excitement, our Christmas Dance was a New Dancer Dance. We had a good turnout of new dancers who obviously were thrilled to be dancing at a real square dance. George did his usual superb job of calling. The dancers responded with happy and enthusiastic dancing. Welcome, new dancers, to the square dance community!

Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays of each month at Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. Especially be sure to come to our special March 9 IWW Birthday Dance and April 13 Easter Dance.

We hope that you’ve had a blessed and peace-filled Christmas season, and wish you a happy, healthy, and dance-filled New Year. Dee and Bert Mackaman

What a busy month December has been. The Lebanon Square Circlers had its New Dancer Dance on December 1 with eight squares on the floor. It was also our Toy Dance with everyone bringing an unwrapped toy for our local Fire Department Christmas Toy Drive. Visiting callers and cuers helped to make this dance very special. We will have our Christmas Dance on December 15.

On Sunday, January 20, 2019, the Lebanon Square Circlers will celebrate 70 years of dancing. We are the second oldest club in Oregon, so we are planning a GREAT TIME IN LEBANON. Dancing will begin at 2:00 PM with guest caller, Jim Voll and Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. There will be special prizes, a balloon event and strawberry shortcake at break time. We are hoping that many dancers will be there to celebrate with us.

Our new dancers have enjoyed all the new dancer events and are looking forward to Mid-Winter. They will graduate after our Birthday Dance. Hope to see you all at our Birthday Dance! Marilyn York

We start out the new year with the retirement of Ken Pratt as our part time cuer/instructor. He has been coming to our club on the second and fourth Thursday’s to teach and mentor Stephanie Lozano and Leonard Snodgrass as they get things arranged and ready to teach on their own. They feel they are ready to take on the entire time to teach and cue for the club. We have gained a lot of knowledge and had a lot of fun with Ken and Dianne as they made the trek from Hillsboro for us and for his Monday nights that will continue.

At the end of November, the Cha class made it through all the Phase 3 moves and moved on to Phase 4 moves in December. The West Coast Swing class continues on the road to an unending list of moves to conquer. We will persevere. It has been fun and a challenge at the same time.

We will have a two hour event on the Thursday after Christmas, December 27, to dance off the Christmas meal. We have also decided to go dark on Thursday before Mid-Winter, January 24, to support the trails in dance and to dance to Scot and Erin Byars from California. Come and join us. We at ReVuNQ hope you have a good Christmas and a great Happy New Year. Marilyn Schmit

Thank you to everyone who attended both of our dances in December, our regular dance and then our new dancer’s dance. We enjoyed dancing to all of the callers and cuers present.

Thomas is active again as our visitation chair and is working on a visitation list. He is also trying to track down where all of our banners are.

Mom (Karyn Buchheit} is working on the volunteer list for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. She has a lot of positions to fill so if you want to help out for a shift or two, let her know. See you at a dance soon. Petrina Buchheit

Our dances have been small but lots of fun. Thank you to the regular dancers that join us to fill out our squares. You are really appreciated.

We just had our New Dancers dance on Dec. 2. We held it at the Salem Square Dance Center as the halls in our area are few and very expensive so glad we still have a few halls that are dedicated to square dance use. We had a pretty good turnout of dancers, angels and callers/cuers. Thank you all. Sandy

November’s dance consisted of the turkey Dance. Despite the foggy weather, we were blessed with a sizeable turnout, and everyone enjoyed a night of dancing and comradery. A special treat was the calling and cueing by Sandy Harris and her “sister” Jackie Gale.

We are looking forward to our Christmas Dance and hope to have you all with us to celebrate the season though dance! Please note that in January Willamette Squares will go dark as our regularly scheduled dance night conflicts with the Mid Winter Festival. Our new dancer’s dance will be forthcoming in the new year at the Salem Square dance Center on January 16. Please join us then for a fun time of dancing. Steve Hoots for Jodee Howard

We had our council meeting Nov 19. All club presidents were urged to attend for input; unfortunately, only about a third showed up.

The big star of the evening was Kathy Roberts, in charge of Publicity and Education, on the Oregon Federation board. She challenged us about being a cheerleader for our council and member clubs, challenging them with a big smile and enthusiasm. And when necessary, being good hosts for out of town callers and cuers. She then reminded us that the whole purpose of councils is to support our clubs, callers and cuers. We could use more callers and cuers, so she reminded us that the Federation has scholarships for our callers and cuers. She made a pitch for our clubs to co-host a council dance with our council, wherein the club does the work and the council pays for the hall. Profits could be split. She concluded about the importance of flyers and that she could make them if necessary, posting them on Facebook, and also encouraged us to attend the Education Seminar at Mid-Winter.

We’re reaping the benefits of our largest class in many years, taught by our illustrious president, Glenn Hauskins. Membership Director Patty Participle is redoing our membership application with proper wording.

I’ve grown so weary of all those Christmas commercials touting it as the happiest time of the year. Phooey! We all know the happiest time of the year is Mid-Winter, where there’s something for everyone. I’ll be driving down with a foot on the gas and hand on the horn. Come to think of it, that’s what I do for even the local dances. There must be something more important than dancing; unfortunately, nothing comes to mind.

Buzzin Bees
Greetings from the Buzzin' Bees. Happy New Year to you all. December was a busy month for us. We had our annual senior appreciation dance on December 1st and took in a healthy amount of donations of lap blankets, socks, toiletries, puzzle books, pens, shampoos and lotions that we then distribute to two assisted facilities that serve primarily low-income seniors. The activity directors then use what we donated as Christmas gifts for the residents so everyone gets to unwrap a gift on Christmas. On December 15th we had our first silent auction at our Christmas dance. Lessons are going well and our new dancer Jamboree will be on January 5th at the Hazel Dell Grange. That dance is also our pajama dance so come in your pjs. We encourage all new dancers to come and have some fun. Our club is looking forward to midwinter in January.

Just as a reminder, we are a mainstream Club but every third tip is plus. We dance with pre rounds at 7 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month and pre-plus on the 3rd Saturday of the month. We meet at the Hazel Dell Grange. Our dances start at 7. Our caller is KC Curtis and our cuer is Lonnie Sykes. Our next club meeting is 1 / 19 / 19. See you in a square!

Happy Hoppers - Link
December was quite a month for the Hoppers. We had a successful toy drive for the Children’s Center. The Hoppers and guests were very generous with the number of gifts donated. Someone even made an anonymous $110 cash donation. By the time this is published our club will have made a visitation to the Country Cut-Ups on December 29th. Their club visited us in November when we were just getting settled in our new home. As anyone who has moved knows, it is not always clear where everything gets packed away. So, when it came time to present the Cut-Ups with one of our visitation banners it was a case of, “Oops! We can’t find our banner!” Our co-president, Ron Chase, offered them a temporary Happy Hopper paper napkin, but our fabulous caller, Jim Hattrick got up and generously took off the vest he was wearing and presented it to the Cut-Ups. So in addition to enjoying a dance at the Boring Barn with the Cut-Ups, we are in a quest to retrieve the vest for our amazing caller who has probably been shivering in this cold weather without his vest. (Could this be a case of someone literally giving up the shirt off his back, or should I say the vest off his back?)

The Happy Hoppers will be busy gearing up for Mid-Winter during the month of January. Not only do we enjoy dancing to some terrific local and national callers and cuers, but we also appreciate the time we have to renew friendships with dancers we may see only at special events. We’re looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Our club was dark on December 8, because we were having new ceiling tiles installed in our hall. Now our ceiling will look much nicer and I expect that it will improve the good sound that we already had. Come dance with us and check it out.

We rang in the new year with our New Years Eve Dance which was themed “Around The World In 80 Days”. It had an international flair with catered Chinese food for dinner. Dan Nordbye called and Julie Steirs cued.

We will end the month of January with a club visitation to Midwinter Festival . Look for us wearing our blue and white club outfits on Saturday evening.

Come dance with us any second and third Saturday at Milwaukie Community Center and you will be warmly welcomed.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Another reminder, the Council has taken sponsorship of the "Pajamarama" on January 11, 2019. This will become an annual "New Dancer" dance. The Callers & Cuers sponsor "New Dancer" dances in December and February, so this should be an excellent fit and give the newbies one more arena to practice their newly learned skill. We are also thinking about sponsoring a few more "New Dancer" dances for the students. They need all the help they can get, as we all did at this stage of learning.

The Council will be sponsoring the Federation Meeting on May 4th & 5th, 2019 and looks forward to welcoming the State Delegates and dancers!!

There were lots of "Holiday" dances and get-together's in December and they were all fun filled & GREAT.

The next Council meeting will be February 5, 2019 at Round Table Pizza in Medford.

The Charlie's hope you have a wonderful holiday season!! We had some great dances and lots more coming up in 2019.

Our September Beginner class celebrated their 3rd plateau on Dec 20th. We have a great group who are very enthusiastic and willing learners.

We will start a new Beginner class on Tuesday January 8th at 6:30pm.

Our 51st birthday dance was a wonderful party!!! Michael Kellogg & MaryAnn Callahan are a joy to dance to!!! They will be the featured talent in July for Summer Festival in Salem; so make sure you plan to attend that!! We had some visitors and everyone had a wonderful time.

December 15th was our Christmas Cookies dance with Phil Ramey and Elaine Funk - it was a good time and some wonderful treats were exchanged!!

Our January 5th dance will be our Winter Wonderland dance as well as Amateur Nite for anyone who would like to give calling/cueing a try!! You never know what talents you may have until you step out of your box (square) :) This will be a MS/Plus dance with Pre Rounds starting at 7pm with Rikki Lobato and 730 Squares/Rounds with Chuck and any potential callers/cuers. January 19th we will welcome Ian Craig to our hall for the 1st time. Advanced at 6pm and rounds with Bob Dingman at 7pm. Plus/MS from 730-10 - will be a lot of fun!!

MidWinter is fast approaching and we are looking forward to a wonderful time with 2 fabulous national callers Charlie Robertson & Ray Brendzy as well as a wonderful cuer Mary Townsend-Manning!! The weekend will also be a chance to dance to Oregon's wonderful group of callers/cuers.

We recently elected Marcia Eblen as our new President & Lynne Hetherington as Treasurer. We are still in need of a VP & Secretary. Congrats to our new officers. Our club is small, but has a wonderful heart!! We welcomed our newest dancer Janie, who has been attending classes & is doing great!!

It looks like our annual Gold Diggers dance may be moved to the 2nd Saturday of June due to a conflict with 3 national callers in Grants Pass on the 3rd Saturday. We have tentatively booked Lawrence Johnstone for the 2019 dance, a cuer has yet to be hired. This will be a great opportunity to come down and dance to a local favorite & then dance to the 3 callers the following weekend.

Our December party night was fun for all. We continued a tradition started by Linda Hayes of a fun ornament exchange.

We will be dark for the rest of 2018.

We will be offering new dancer lessons. January 7, 14, 21 (Mondays) for anyone interested. Those nights are free to new dancers.

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year & hope you will mark your calendar for our party nights.

Classes are still at a status quo. There are a couple of students who are former dancers and are refreshing the activity and having a ball. On Thursday, Dec 20, the class hosted their annual Christmas Potluck. There was even a visit from Santa Claus. As always, it was free to all dancers.

Monday Plus class is going great. There are only a couple more moves to learn and they will be done with classes. On Monday, January 14, 2019, we will start a a Beginner Class. Come on out from 630 to 830pm to angel and help the students learn how great Square Dancing is. We have a great time. Phil is a lot of fun.

The next "Game Night" will be January 18th. What alot of fun we have.

Wayne's Advanced Class on Wednesdays is over until April when he and Debbi get back from their travels. In it's place, Phil will be doing a Mainstream/Plus workshop to give everyone who feels a little shaky about some moves, a chance to come out & practice. Come out and enjoy a fun evening & maybe learn something!

A lot of the Stars went to Grants Pass to dance on December 1st for the Charlie's Birthday Dance. It was great fun dancing to Mike Kellogg & MaryAnn Callahan. They are quite a team!

Don't forget the Stars' Birthday Dance is on February 23, 2019 and the caller is Ed Kremers from Magalia, CA. The cuer will be our own Elaine Funk. It should be a great evening.

What a year for the Columbia River Dancers. Overall it was a very good year. Our club had growth, even though small in numbers, yet great in dancing desire. We were forced to go dark too many times this last summer because of the heat. To that end we are probably going to go dark this coming summer. The Grange just gets too hot to really enjoy dancing. We were dark for the Seaside Sashay and one weekend as the area cloggers took over the grange for their annual event. We had visitations from a variety of clubs and look forward of visiting them back. We had a great time at the Sashay and are planning to return in bigger numbers this year.

The square dance community also lost a great lady with the passing of Dorothy Louder this past year. She was a good teacher, good cuer and a just nice lady to know.

But on to this coming month. Our January 12th Pajama Dance will feature Craig Abercrombie calling and Julie Stiers cueing. What a way to welcome in 2019. We will be dark on the 26th of January as we will be supporting the Mid-Winter Festival in Albany. Look us up and square up a tip with us.

One thing that our club prides itself on is we make every attempt possible that everyone gets to dance. So if you are a single, do not let that stop you from coming.

November is a stressful month; elections, time change from ST to DST, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and planning for December Holidays. Thank goodness we have the antidote. We dance! No medicine beats stress as well as dancing.

The TVC is providing crockpot foods and dancers supply a variety of finger foods during open break. Donation $8.00. See flyer at EagerBeavers.info.

We will again be offering our popular Plus classes starting February 4th at noon to 1:15PM. Brush up your plus skills or start new. Either way you will have fun. See lesson flyer below, our regular dance starts at 1:15 right after lessons.

Even if you work on Mondays, you can join us once in a while; we dance every Monday afternoon, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our callers keep us on our toes as each week, always seeming to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. We dance from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

The Hayshakers had two fun-filled dances in November with Craig Abercrombie calling on the 3rd Friday and Janienne Alexander calling on the 5th Friday.

The Hayshakers have three visitations planned for December. We’ll visit the Columbia River Dancers in Vancouver’s Hazel Dell Grange on Saturday the 8th, the Happy Hoppers in Vancouver’s Washington Grange on Saturday the 15th, and then back to the Hazel Dell Grange to rejoin the Columbia River Dancers for their Starry Night New Year’s Eve Dance.

November 10th was our 11th Annual Turkey Toss Dance. Thank you guests. This dance is always very popular because it’s a bit of a gamble, (Will my ticket be drawn?), a bit of a sporting event, , (Can you get the bean bag in the corn hole?) a bit of a competition, (Am I a better at tossing than the other competitor?), and a lot of laughs. We had eleven turkeys up for grabs and each one went home with their happy winner. Was it my imagination or were we being haunted by wild turkey calls all evening? I’ll never tell . After the dance, I think it was our sense of smell not hearing that drew everyone to the dining room for turkey, dressing and fixings.

November 24th was our Soup Dance and it was super. Such a splendid variety and with a supply of small bowls you could try each and every one more than once. Pans, crockpots, Dutch ovens and instant pots lined the table. Daryl Clendenin won the Hoedowner spin it and he was plotting where to spend it when I saw him last.

January 12th is our elegant Black and White Sparkle Ball; dimmed lighting, winking and chasing white lights scattered about and mirrors everywhere. It will be a truly splendid evening with Daryl Clendenin calling and Randy Lewis cueing bringing their usual best. Come and twirl across the floor at the Aloha Grange Ballroom. Wish we could do the planetarium scene from La La Land but we’ll do our best to give you a special evening.

And on January 26th we’ll be dark for mid-Winter. The Hoedowners are heading south for the celebration of “The American Dance 2019”. Boy, we’re ready! See you in Albany for the weekend.

This will be published as 2018 waves goodbye to a year when we had many events to celebrate and people to thank.

First, of course, we want to thank Randy Dibble and Jeanine Norden for the high quality of each dance and for their upbeat personalities, always working to make each dance special.

In 2018, for the first time, we had workshops. The summer heat skipped our dance nights. Supporters, long time friends, and newer ones kept up the attendance. We thank each and every one of you who came.

We welcome each of you at our dances. Each of you is a value supporter who helps to make our dances such fun. Those who bring snacks are among the most faithful supporters. Those who encourage others to come to our dances brighten the evening for all of us.

We thank all of you who walk in with a smile, ready for an enjoyable evening with friendly folks. We thank Winona Grange for offering a dance location at a reasonable cost that is easy to get to.

We hosted the Annual Seaside Sashay Festival at the Convention Center and it was a success again this year with over 200 dancers. There was a good group of our Sunset Promenaders at the Festival.

In November our theme for the month was “Giving Thanks”, in December the theme was “Christmas” and for both months we had a non-perishable food drive which we give to the Food Bank to distribute to the less fortunate.

Our January dances schedule is:

• Thursday January 3rd Promenaders Plus dance with Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt calling and cueing.

• Saturday January 5th Sunset Promenaders mainstream dance with Mike Stout and Ken Pratt calling and cueing. The dance theme is “Wild West”, with chili and cornbread at the break.

• Thursday January 17th Promenaders Plus dance.

• Saturday January 19th Mainstream dance with a theme of “Pajamas Dance”.

• Thursday January 31st Promenaders Plus dance.

Our Club wants to wish all the dancers in Oregon a very Happy New Year, and we are hoping this whole year will be great for us all.

We start our square dance lessons in January and we are working to get our advertisements organized and hopefully get some new students. The last couple of years we have grown our membership and hope to continue that trend. If you or any of your friends want to take lessons in January on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00 at our hall which is the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall. There is good parking on the street or in the bank parking lot across the street.

If you have questions please call 503-848-3841 and we will try to answer them.

I hope you've made plans to attend the New Years Eve dance at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Randy Lewis cueing.

January 4th is a regular dance with Bev Flint workshopping some new steps at 7:00-8:00 and then the January18th dance finds us "Chasing the Blues Away" with KC Curtis calling Pre-Plus at 7:30-8:00.

The Toes are working hard on a quilt to raffle off during the 2019 year, in order to raise funds for finding a cure for cancer. It will culminate at the Toe's "Man Enough To Wear Pink" dance. Look for this beautiful quilt to visit your club and Good Luck to every one buying a ticket.

Speaking of quilts... The River City dancers have a tradition of presenting "Quilts of Valor" to club members, and callers who served in the military. This year they have chosen our very own Mr. KC Curtis! The quilt will be presented to KC on Wednesday January 9th at the Montavilla Sewing center in Gresham at 3:00pm. We couldn't be prouder of you, and we thank you for service to our country! Congratulations KC!

Make your resolution now to visit the Toe's at least a few times this year, we'd love to see you. Happy New Year!

On November 4th we held a terrific “New Dancer Jamboree” with eight squares! Thanks to everyone for your support! On the 10th we held a “Grateful Harvest Pie Party” dance, and on our second dance night, the day after Thanksgiving, we were dark to allow more family time for everyone.

On January 6th our club resumes Sunday afternoon lessons, at 2:00 for Waltz with Sherri Clark and at 3:30 for B52-B68 with Terry Halley.

Due to Mid-Winter Festival we have only one dance in January on the 12th, “Cowboy Country” (Western attire appreciated but optional) with Terry Halley calling his best country music and Sandra Pinion cuing. Our dances begin with Rounds at 7:30 followed by Plus at 7:45, Mainstream at 8:00 with the fourth tip Plus, and refreshments at 10 pm.

The day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 23rd, was our annual Gospel Dance. Our regular caller, Randy Dibble, was away for a much deserved family holiday and National Caller Dan Nordbye guest called for us, with Julie Stiers cueing. Unfortunately the attendance was low this year with just three squares, but those who came out had a great time. All dancers present knew Plus, so Mr. Nordbye called our Mainstream Dance at the Plus level.

We have two dances coming up later in December that have not happened at this writing.

Our New Dancer Christmas Dance will be 4th Friday, December 28th at Mainstream level. It’s after Christmas, but there’s still holiday time cheer to share. Randy Dibble is the caller and Julie Stiers is the cuer. This will be Julie Stiers last dance to cue on a regular basis for the Valley River Dancers. Julie has been a great cuer for our club as well as friend and will be missed at our dances, but we will see her across a square somewhere in the area. We wish Julie well in her future endeavors. Bring a wrapped $5 gift to the dance for an exchange game. You can probably pick up something interesting after Christmas for a bargain! Bring your students and come out for a fun night of dancing in Newberg.

The next 5th Saturday ‘A’ Dance is December 29th, called by Randy Dibble, to be held at Woodburn Estates Country Club Auditorium, 7-9 p.m. (Advanced only dancing, no rounds) [ I can’t help but interject here that apparently smiling is optional. Have you watched ‘A’ dancers in action? If you have then you may have noticed very few of the dancers are smiling. Well, as a newer dancer with practically the entire club dancing ‘A’ except for me, I wondered if they were actually having any fun since the look on their faces might be saying otherwise. So, I asked several ‘A’ dancers, “Why do you look so serious, aren’t you having any fun, and if you aren’t having any fun, why do you want to show up, pay and dance ‘A’?” All of the ‘A’ dancers I asked said it’s tons of fun, they really enjoy it, and they are just listening for the calls, concentrating on where they are supposed to be and enjoying the challenge. So now we know! They all highly recommended ‘A’ lessons adding that it will cause Mainstream and Plus dancing abilities to be all the more effortless as well. Randy Dibble offers ‘A’ classes typically twice a year, and they workshop ‘A’ weekly so if you’re interested, more square dancing fun awaits! ]

With Julie Stiers leaving us for guest cueing opportunities after our 4th Friday December dance, beginning in January we have new cuers. Our 2nd Friday Plus Dance will be cued by Ken and Dianne Pratt and include some intermediate rounds. Our 4th Friday Mainstream Dance will be cued by Sherri Clark.

Monthly Round Dance Workshops, led by Ken and Dianne Pratt will begin in January just prior to our Plus Dance on 2nd Friday, (January 11th) starting at 6:30 p.m. for 45 minutes with intermediate pre-rounds for 30 minutes beginning at 7:30 p.m. If you stay for the Plus dance that follows at 8 p.m., the charge for both the workshop and dance is $10. General admission to the dance alone is $6 donation, and the workshop and pre-rounds alone is $6. The first workshop will focus on 2 step to review any challenges there.

Are your new dancers excited but a little nervous about 2019 MidWinter? If you have been dancing for a long time can you remember how you could hardly wait for MidWinter but that you did not “mess up a square?” We have a New Dancer Dance

scheduled 2:00-4:30 pm on Sunday afternoon January 13th, so if you are within driving distance of Roseburg, think about loading up your car with some dancers and coming to our dance at the Buckeroo Barn. All calls will be at the New Dancer Level. And of course, all dancers are welcome. It’s a chance for the new dancers to dance at a new dancer level and a chance for everyone to come out and have an afternoon of dancing. Come and have fun with us. See our flyer or give us a

We have been busy here at the barn! Lessons are moving smoothly and our students are looking forward to joining other dancers from around Oregon at the Mid-Winter celebration in January. In order to get ready and have as much floor time as possible, they have been visiting lots of new dancer dancers…we have our new dancer dance coming up here at the barn in January.

We had a new student Christmas dance and a mainstream Christmas dance this past month. We were able to do a gift exchange for our young dancers and an ornament exchange for our adult dancers. We all had a great time and really enjoyed the company of each other after such a stressful election season.

We are all filled with gratitude, thankfulness, and appreciation for this wonderful season and hope that you are as well. May your New Year be filled with health, happiness, and lots of dancing!

See you in a square in 2019!
