Oregon Federation News
February 2019

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 February 2019
President's Corner

Hello to 2019, It’s a new year to start fresh. The theme this year is “Let’s Get Together” for Summer Festival”. Hope everyone starts this month and “Let’s Get Together” for Mid-Winter. I will be there to dance a little and visit a lot. It will be six weeks after me knee surgery, but I still plan to have fun. Don’t forget the after parties for Mid-Winter 2020 and Summer Festival 2019. The Federation festivals are so much fun with dancing and fellowship. Don’t forget to bring your new dancers and youth to each festival. Remember the youth can request festival scholarships for their ribbons. Contact the Youth Coordinator, Karyn Buchheit, for more information. Educational opportunities are offered at each festival, check out the program books and attend one with a friend or fellow dancer. Many of the clubs have new dancers graduating and new dance classes starting. Encourage your new graduate’s to angel the beginning classes. Gives the graduate dancer more floor time, additional learning, and a sense of accomplishment to help others. I encourage everyone to support the students, angel a class, and encourage everyone to attend dances. Expand outside the box of one club for your students. Multiple clubs around the state offer student level dances. Try going with the student to a dance at another club or council, this will demonstrate support for the new dancer. Remember to stay safe and have fun. See you at a dance soon.

Lorri McIntosh
OFSRDC President

Editor's Note

September lessons are winding down, and Mid-Winter is just about history. Now we need to focus on showing our new graduates and club guests what a good time we have as square dancers.

December was a particular hard month for square dancers; we have a long list of obituaries this month. Take care of yourselves, please. We need all the dancers we can get!

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Mid-Winter

Oregon's Mid-Winter Festival 2019 will be held January 25, 26 and 27, 2019, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Summer Festival

We hope you are planning to attend the 2019 Summer Festival, to be held at the Blanchet School in Salem on July 19-21, 2019. This festival is sponsored by the entire Federation Board.

Other National Events

The 68th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, June 26-29, 2019.

The pre-convention for the 69th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Spokane, Washington, February 7-9, 2019. The dance on February 9 is free for those who have pre-registered for the convention, and is your first opportunity to get full registrations.

Corporation Renewal Status

All clubs in the Oregon Federation are required to maintain their status as non-profit corporations with the State of Oregon. The Secretary of State's office mails out a renewal notice about a month before your registration expires every year. The following clubs expire this month:

Our next scheduled Fifth Saturday Dance isn't until March 30. This may be our annual area benefit dance. I'll keep you posted.

The New Year's Eve dance was a successful entering into 2019 affair. One dancer shy of nine squares. It was good to see Jim Voll who had a wonderful time visiting and dancing. Sandy Harris did two guest tips calling and cueing. She was dressed in black with glittering bling. Fun! We had dancers from up north and down south and everywhere in between. There were pies and lots of other goodies as well. Happy New Year 2019 to all!

Keep on dancing, calling and cueing for FUN

We started out the holiday season with a visitation to Independence Wagon Wheelers. We did not have enough to retrieve a banner, but we had a very good time dancing to the calling of George Hermann as well as that of his grandson Mike Kious. The next holiday event was at the Emerald Square Dance Center with the Buccaneers’ Christmas Dance, Dec. 7. We enjoyed dancing to Roger Putzler’s calling and Christina Corelli’s cueing. Some of us got to taste Christina’s famous rum balls. We always have fun starting the month with that plus dance. Single Trees also celebrated the holiday season with our annual Christmas Dinner & Dance on Friday, Dec. 14. Our president Larry Reetz cooked the ham for the potluck dinner which was attended by at least 29 dancers. We all had a good dinner and then danced to Jim Hattrick’s calling and Jackie Gale’s cueing.

At the end of the month many Single Trees attended New Year’s Eve dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center where Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli offered the dance at only $2.50 per person (harkening back to the 80’s). It was lovely to see a group from Corvallis Squares as well as some from Sweet Home Squarenaders and Roseburg’s Timber 8’s. There were as many as nine squares of dancers in attendance with seven squares on the floor at times. What a fun night of dancing with poppers and sparkling cider to celebrate the advent of 2019.

We’re all looking forward to Mid-Winter Festival which will be over by the time you are reading this.

Our Fall Mainstream Class has graduated and is ready to attend their first Mid-Winter Festival. What a treat to have them a part of the Square Dance Family, dancing with enthusiasm, skill, confidence, and flair! We are very proud of them. Kudos to George Hermann, club caller and mainstream class instructor! And a special thanks to Dave O’Neil, IWW Membership Chair, for a superb job of organizing and coordinating the fall lessons. We really appreciate Salem Hospital allowing us to hold our classes at the hospital.

Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays of each month at Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. Especially be sure to come to our special March 9 IWW Birthday Dance and April 13 Easter Dance. Dee and Bert Mackaman

Best wishes to all for 2019 as we begin another year of dancing. Our Lebanon first dance of the year was on January 5, a Mardi Gras dance with lots of costumes, beads, and fun. There were four squares on the floor. Dee

Our BIG event will be happening on January 20, 2019 -- our 70th birthday dance. It will be a bash with lots of prizes, a raffle, and strawberry shortcake. Charlotte Jeskey will be calling, with guest caller, Jim Voll and Jackie Gale will be cueing. Please plan to help us celebrate as we are the second oldest club in Oregon.

Our hearts were saddened recently as Joyce Voll, cuer for our club for many years, passed away. A memorial was held for her on January 13 with dancing following.

Many of our club members will be attending Mid Winter Festival the end of January. Our dance on February 2 will be a regular dance with Charlotte calling and Jackie Cueing. Our dance on February 16 will be a Sweetheart dance. We are always glad to have visitors. See you in a square! Marilyn York

Several of our dancers attended Ken Pratt’s New Year’s Eve dance. I heard there were 17 couples in attendance. That is great news and hope they had a good time.

Soon it will be time to put names to paper to see if anyone is interested in running for office and wanting to join our club. There are all sorts of possibilities available. Let us know what you think.

We will be going dark January 24 for the Trails-In Dance for Mid-Winter. Hope to see you there to dance to Scot and Erin Byars, from California. It should be a great dance to get prepared for the long weekend of dancing and socialization. Marilyn Schmit

Our new dancer dance went very well. We had over 60 people show up overall and a majority of them came to the dinner as well.

At our January dance, we implemented a price change in our door fees. The adult price is now $5.00; the youth price remains the same at $3.00 and the family rate is now $15.00.

Mom (Karyn Buchheit) is looking for volunteers for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. There are a lot of jobs for her to fill and she does prefer using more volunteers with shorter shifts to allow the volunteers time to watch the competitions. Please contact her if you are interested. See you at a dance soon. Petrina Buchheit

Willamette Squares
The Willamette Squares Christmas dance was wintery themed and enjoyed by everyone present. The mood was festive, the refreshments were traditional and the calling and cueing merry and bright.

Our January dance on our regular dance night will be dark due to the Midwinter festival. However, our new dancer dance took place Sunday afternoon, January 6, at the Salem Square dance Center. As always it was a fun dance! John, our president, has become a snowbird and will be headed to Yuma, Arizona soon after our new dancer dance and returning mid April. In the meantime, our vice president, Kevin, will fill in.

Willamette Squares members are thinking of Lee Ashwill following his surgery and wishing him well.

Our club will be back on track in February of the New Year and we look forward to lots of dancing in 2019! Jodee

We’re all flying high, in anticipation of Mid-Winter. You know the event: where we can all dance ‘till our hearts delight! Or push our way into the resale, with all our might. And if we get tired, there are always meetings and lots of pleasings.

Our square class is ready to graduate, and we’re happy to proclaim we have the smartest graduates in the entire council. They are approaching mainstream level.

If you join the B&B’s now, for a mere $15 per year, you will get an additional three months membership at no charge. Such a deal.

Country Cut-Ups - Link
Our mainstream class will be graduating this month and that is always exciting to introduce a new crop of dancers to our beloved square dance world. Our club welcomes new dancers that are learning and eager to get floor time. Come out and support the new dancers on the 1st and 4th Saturdays at the Boring Barn.

Because our club is doing well enough financially, we are going to include our 5th Saturday Plus dances as part of our yearly dues for the first half of 2019. If all goes well, this will be extended. At only $60 per year, per person, membership in the Country Cut-Ups is a really good deal. You only have to attend 10 of our 27 dances scheduled this year to break even!

If you start your spring cleaning, think about donating things you no longer use to our annual Barn Sale coming up in April. We are accepting donations now. We appreciate your donations, and especially your purchases!

Come dance the most fun club in the area! (I might be a little prejudiced!)

Happy Hoppers - Link
When you are a square dancer, the fun never stops! Hopper members spent January warming up for Mid-Winter. Jim certainly kept us on our toes with some challenging calls and some “just for fun” tips. Now we are ready to put all this practice to work as we dance the days away at Mid-Winter which should be happening about the time this issue of the OFN is published.

February will be another active month for us. Happy Hoppers is more than just a square dance club. Throughout the year our members contribute both time and material goods to our community. For example, in December we collect gift items for children being served at the non-profit Children’s Center. February is our annual food drive for the North Clark County Food Bank. During both dances in February we collect canned goods which are delivered to the food bank at the end of the month. Members and guests are invited to help us fill our food boxes with non-perishable food items. We’re hoping to make this year a “banner year” and surpass the number of pounds of food we have collected in the past.

Another activity that will resume in February is our-dine out night. The cooks in the family really love this night for they do not have to plan a meal. Instead they get to gather with friends at a restaurant for a great night out. Each month we go to different restaurant. We have tried American, Italian, Asian, Chinese, German, and Mexican. Some of the restaurants have become favorites for our members. Each time a drawing is held, and some lucky member gets their dinner paid for by the club.

As we look ahead, we will be planning our anniversary dance which will happen in the spring. This year our club will be 60 years old. A lot of changes have taken place during those years, but one thing that never changes is the fun and comradeship square dancers share as members of this wonderful community.

We are saddened by the sudden and unexpected passing of our own Neal Keefer. Neal died on December 5 of a sudden heart attack while riding his bicycle, which was something he loved. Neal and his wife Virginia were our club president couple in 2017 until the spring of 2018 when their term expired. Neal was also president of the Milwaukie Community Center and played a big part in getting our new ceiling tiles in the dance hall. He is sorely missed and our hearts go out to his wife Virginia and family. A celebration of life memorial service was held at our hall (Milwaukie Community Center) December 29. River City Dancers provided the reception set up and food.

We began the new year with a New Years Eve dance in our hall. Dan Nordbye called and Julie Stiers cued. We held a New Dancers dance January 13 with a “experienced clothing” sale . Our club visitation that month is to Mid-Winter Festival.

Future dates to remember are Saturday February 11 which is our Valentines Dance. And March 9 which is our 50’s dance.

We look forward to seeing and dancing with you all in 2019. Come see us.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Hi Everyone,

The “Pajamarama” on Jan 11th was well attended. Everyone had a good time dancing to Phil Ramey and other local callers. Elaine Funk did her usual great job of cueing for the round dancers present. This will become an annual “New Dancer” dance. The Callers & Cuers “Winter Jambroee” will be February 10th. The council is also thinking about sponsoring a few more “New Dancer” dances for the students. They need all the help they can get, as we all did at this stage of our learning. Stay tuned for more updates about these dances.

By now, the clubs should be aware of the Federation Meeting to be held in Rogue Sis-Q Council on May 4th & 5th. The Saturday meeting will be held in the Park where Phil & Roberta Claudson live. The evening meal will be a crock pot Potluck. Your club delegates have sign up sheets for dishes and other things to bring. The last time the Federation met in our area, we had a crock pot Potluck and it was a huge success. Let’s make this a repeat performance, so people will know Southern Oregon is a fun place to go.

Be sure to support your club and the clubs in your Council. Your help and support is very important to the future of our activity.

The next Council meeting will be February 5, 2019 at Round Table Pizza in Poplar Square.

New classes started Jan 8th and we've enjoyed some enthusiastic and fun students. We have one more class open to new students. Our September class is scheduled to graduate Mid February and we have 8 students who are very excited about dancing. We look forward to graduating and welcoming some fun dancers.

Our January dances were a lot of fun, including Amateur nite with 3 newbie callers who tried their hand at calling. Good job! Our dance on the 19th has guest caller Ian Craig and we will report on that dance next month.

February brings some great dances and lots of fun. February 2nd is our Super Bowl Dance with our annual Chili CookOff. Chuck Simpkins and Rikki Lobato will be calling and cueing. February 16th we have guest caller Roger Putzler calling our Sweetheart Dance and Rikki Lobato will be cueing. Roger is lots of fun. Both dances start at 7 with pre rounds and are Mainstream dances with Plus tips.

Boatnik is fast approaching and we are so excited to welcome Joe Saltel and TJ Chadd as our wonderful talent!!! It's going to be an awesome party.

Many Charlie's are excited to head to Albany for Midwinter!! Always a great time with many memories made!!!

Safe travels and see you in a square!

Happy New Year everyone from Circle n Square we hope this year will be one of the best.

We held our first new dancer class Jan.7th and had 4 new dancers. What a great way to start the new year.

We want to say a big THANK YOU to the Oregon Federation for sending us our portion of the profits from Summer Fest.

As we venture into the new year, once again, we say thank you to our outgoing officers, and all the best to our incoming ones.

We want to extend an invitation to everyone and hope you will attend our Valentine Dance February 16th.

Even though it is two months away, just a reminder we are hosting the council dance in March. I may be stepping out of line here, but I would like to give the dance a theme. How about we make the dance an Easter dance? and to add a twist, let's make it an "Easter Bonnet" dance. So while I may be authorized to do so, I say dust off, or create a new Easter Bonnet! Now men put on your best Top Hat, Cowboy Hat, or you guessed it create one. This is an idea I hope everyone will go along with. There will be a special prize for the best Bonnet, and Hat.

Hope to see you on the floor

On Monday, January 14th, we started a new Beginner Class. We had a great turn out, but we need more angels to help the new dancers. Come on out from 6:30pm to 8:30pm to angel and help the students learn how great Square Dancing is. We have a great time. Phil is a lot of fun.

The last “Game Night” was January 18th. What a lot of fun we had. Some Friday night when we are having “Game Night” come out and join us. It is a “Hoot.” If you don’t play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on or if there is some other “Game” you would like to play, let us know. We are open to most any table game. The next one should be in a couple of months; stay tuned for updates.

Wednesdays with Wayne are over until April, when he and Debbie get back from their travels. In its place, Phil will be doing a Mainstream/Plus Workshop to give everyone who feels a little shaky about some moves, a chance to come out and practice. There were 2 squares plus on the first night. Phil says he may even attempt to throw in a little bit of Advanced, not to worry, it will be easy Advanced. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening and maybe learn something.

Don’t forget the Stars’ Birthday Dance is on February 23, 2019 and the caller, Ed Kremers from Magalia, CA, will not be able to be the caller. His home was in Magalia, CA and it was lost in the Camp Fire. We were able to find another caller for the dance. Richard Lane will come down from Roseburg to do the dance for us. The cuer will be Elaine Funk. It should be a great evening. We will bring Ed back to call for us when he lets us know he is ready to do so.

The annual TVC New Years Eve Dance had 84 attendees with 8 enthusiastic squares dancing at one point. Darrell Kalmbach called a spirited fun dance with Randy Lewis cueing our favorites. Dancers enjoyed crockpot foods and desert bar between tips. We began dancing at 9PM, ushered in the New Year, and wrapped up at 12:15. The club with the highest percentage of their members present was the Sunset Promenaders and were rewarded with the TVC Banner.

Since the OFN is published mid month, you still have time to consider attending the annual TVC Presidents Meeting & Potluck honoring current and past club Presidents. It will be held at the IOOF Hall, 267 East Main Street, Hillsboro, OR 97123 on January 28th with the potluck dinner starting at 6:00 and meeting at 7:00. All TVC club Presidents & dancers are invited to join us. The TVC wishes to thank all the presidents of the TVC Clubs for volunteering their time and efforts into this activity we all love. Also, at this meeting the TVC President, Mike St Clair, will announce the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award” for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area.

Our next Council event is the Spring Fling Dance, held at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall on March 30th. This dance will feature Randy Dibble calling with Jeanine Norden cueing. The dance begins with pre-rounds at 7:30 followed by Mainstream with rounds at 8:00. Every third tip will be Plus. This dance is co-hosted by the Mix N' Mingle.

New year, new caller, but the same place and times. We are excited to have Renee Ruud as our newest caller to call for the Columbia River Dancers. She will be calling our February 9th dance at our usual stomping grounds, the Hazel Dell Grange. Julie Stiers will do the cueing. Since this is our Valentine's Dance let's go for red and white all around.

Our second dance is on the 23rd with Jim Hattrick doing the calling and cueing. This has no theme as we will have come through the Burn-off, Christmas Dance, New Year's eve and the winter festival. But what great dances they were.

We had such a great time at the New Year's Eve dance that the CRDs are planning to host another one this year. We believe that we will have the Front Porch Trio (Adam could not make it this year). Stay tuned for further developments.

Remember that we dance plus from 7 to 8 and mainstream from 8 to quitting time. Our goal is to make sure everyone gets to dance so singles are always welcome.

Fantastic Opportunity! Our successful Plus Class last year encouraged us to repeat the program starting at noon, February 4th, Monday, running into May. Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road, Beaverton, is the location. Join us to learn or improve your Plus skills. We will have our three great callers teaching the lessons: Daryl Clendenin, Jim Hattrick, Darrell Kalmbach. For more information see the flyer below.

December was a short month since we did not dance on holidays of Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. Our faithful members and visitors showed up with enthusiasm to extract as much fun as possible for the first three dances of the month.

We ended December and began January by joining Sunset Promenaders to host the TVC New Years Eve Dance at IOOF Hall in Hillsboro. Mike St Clair, TVC president, welcomed a crowd of well dressed dancers in black and silver, lace and leather, classy petticoats and tiered skirts who mingled on the floor dancing with caller Darrell Kalmbach and cuer Randy Lewis. When they were not dancing they were in the break room feasting on meat balls, chicken, pulled pork, grapes, assorted vegetables, dips, cheeses, crackers, and every kind of dessert. To make it all special some great volunteers decorated the hall and break room creating a beautiful and festive candy for the eyes. After we all greeted the New Year with hugs and song Darrell called the first tip of the new year. We all agreed it was a great evening.

February has several holidays so you have the opportunity to be creative in what you wear to the dances. Groundhog Day on the 2nd, Valentines Day on the 14th, Presidents Day on the 19th, and even the Chinese New Year on the 16th occur this month. Groundhog Day will take a LOT of creativity.

The beginning of a new year can sometimes mean the beginning of a new you. Did you make resolutions to make changes in your life? Is it still a work in progress? I have heard the act of trying is as important as succeeding. I am not sure this is true, but I know I keep trying with varying degrees of success. Good luck to you.

We dance every Monday afternoon, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our callers keep us on our toes each week, always seeming to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. During lessons our schedule is 12:00 - 1:15 class, then 1:15 - 3:00 pm plus and rounds at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Hayshakers - Link
The Hayshakers have done a lot of visitations recently and more are planned. On Saturday December 8th we danced with the Columbia River Dancers in the Hazel Dell Grange in Vancouver. The next Saturday we danced Plus with the Happy Hoppers in Vancouver’s Washington Grange. We drove in circles finding the Grange as it was our first time there, but we did get there on time.

The Hayshakers went dark on December 21st since it was so close to Christmas. On New Year’s Eve we joined the Columbia River Dancers again for their Starry Night Dance complete with amazing desserts and fireworks!

As of this writing, more visitations are planned: the Happy Hoppers Plus dancing on the 5th of January [much easier to find the Washington Grange this time] and R-Squre-D’s Snowflake Frolic Dance in Kelso on Friday January 11th. A Hayshaker dance is planned for Friday, January 18th at 6:00 p.m. in the Pacific Grange on Hwy. 101 between Seaside and Astoria.

Hoedowners know that December is a month for reaching out to others, family, and friends. It’s also full of opportunities to reach out to those less fortunate. The Aloha Grange #773 Christmas Family Adoption is always an opportunity to provide a special Christmas to a family in need. This year Hoedowners provided clothing, bedding, toys, toiletries, cleaning supplies, cash and gift cards. A special thanks to all the Hoedowners who organized wrapped and delivered the bounty. Along with the Valley Squares and the Aloha Grange members, we were able to provide a memorable Christmas for a needy family.

The generosity extended to our Dancers in Toy Land dance on December 8th. This special dance was also in recognition of Yvonne Clendenin’s retirement as our club cuer. Dancers were encouraged to bring toys and gifts for needy kids and there was a wonderful pile at evening’s end. A lovely retirement cake and refreshments were served. Chet Wolter won the Spin It to Win It game.

On December 16th, the Hoedowners sponsored a New Dancer Jamboree. Daryl was pleased to have Terry Halley and Darrell Kalmbach join him on stage as guest callers and speaking of guests we had a crowd. Dancers from Tri-Squares, Sunset Promenaders, Valley Squares, Toe Draggers, Chaps and Petticoats, Hayshakers, Oak Hill Squares and Frontier Squares of Webster Texas attended with a group of independents. Are experienced dancers known to break down squares? Of course they are! It’s part of learning and it makes for a fun afternoon for beginners to the experienced.

December 22nd, with Christmas just three days away, Hoedowners held a Sounds of Christmas Dance. An evening of singing calls. It’s the perfect time of the year for those singing calls as everyone likes to sing along with Christmas music. There was a Christmas angel flitting about and as the evening progressed her golden glow only became all the brighter. We were very excited to have Yvonne Clendenin be our guest cuer. I’ll be darned if Yvonne didn’t take home cash in the Spin It to Win It game. Before our “thank you” circle dispersed, we stopped to sing Silent Night and wish a Merry Christmas to one and all.

Hearts are aflutter as February approaches. We’re planning a Roaring Twenties Dance on February 9th. We’ll have fringe a’ flying; gangsters, flappers, silent screen stars, and Gatsby are all welcome.

February 23rd will be the Hoedowners 69th Anniversary Dance. We’ll be having our famous Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner with all the fixin’s. We’ve done it 68 times before so we’ve got this. You don’t want to miss this one!!

Our canned food dance wound up 2018. After the dance Dan Knierim took all the food from the stage to the Oregon Food Bank barrels downstairs, a heavy load.

As always, we gathered in a circle to sing Silent Night to close the dance. We left with warm feelings, the perfect way to say farewell to 2018.

We hope that you will join us for every dance in 2019.

The kiddies have some toys thanks to the Toy Dance donations. Even with the holiday events 4 squares were on the floor. This was our only dance in December, however our club did celebrate together with a meal and gift exchange. Some of our members are talented and provided gifts that were "stolen" and passed around to the great enjoyment of us all.

On a sad note 2 of our precious members recently passed away: Joy Westervelt and Glenn Faires, they will be missed.

February 8th will be our Valentine's dance, we will be a little ahead of the day for sweethearts but we will be lovin' the dancing (smiley/wink). Fourth Saturday dance is in honor of President's Day.

Please remember that our dances are now ending at 9:30pm. 7-8 Plus and advanced rounds, 8-9:30pm Mainstream with rounds. 106 NW 8th, Kelso/Longview intersection on Ocean Beach Hwy, in the hall at the water park.

Our website www.r-square-d.info is a great way to keep track of our club and events, or friend us on Facebook. Our caller is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

Our December dances were enjoyable with Christmas as the theme and then the special TVC dance on New Year’s Eve that capped off the year of 2018 properly. Wow, on to 2019 already! It seems that last year passed by way too fast but then we do have a lot to be thankful about and it was fun.

Our February dances schedule is:

• Saturday, February 2nd “Mardi Gras” theme for our Mainstream Dance with Mike Stout and Ken Pratt calling and cueing.

• Thursday, February 7th Plus Dance with Darrell Kalmbach and Ken Pratt calling and cueing.

• Saturday, February 16th, Valentine theme with Mike and Ken.

• Thursday, February 21st, Plus Dance.

Our Club wants to thank all the dancers that visit us, we appreciate you coming to our dances and hope you all have enjoyed yourselves.

For those of you that have not been to one of our dances; we are located in downtown Hillsboro at the Odd Fellows Hall, 267 E. Main Street. There is plenty of parking either on the street or in the bank parking lot across the street. Our hall is air-conditioned, nice dance hall with wood floor, and nice dining area next to the dance hall. Our dances start at 7:00 with intermediate rounds, then at 7:30 to 9:30 the square dance. Come and dance with us so we can become better friends. If you need more information call 503-848-3841.

This report is most likely finding you, like me, getting ready for the biggest dance party in Oregon, Mid-Winter festival of course! For the new students in the group, I hope you are planning on attending. It is the most fun you can have in one place.

The Toes are giving you 2 chances to take your special sweetheart dancing. We are sure “Everythings coming up Roses” for our 1st dance of the month on February 1st, 7:30 pre-rounds. Then on February 15th, is our regular dance, 7:30 pre-plus.

Our beautiful quilt that we’ve been working on to benefit cancer research, is almost complete and will be making an appearance soon.

Don’t be a stranger, come dance with the Toe’s.

In December we had our annual holiday dinner at the Sherwood Spaghetti Factory including the customary and entertaining white-elephant gift exchange.

On January 6th our lessons continued on Sunday afternoons, with Sherri Clark cueing Waltz at 2:00 and Terry Halley calling B52-B68 at 3:30. Angels are most welcome to attend.

In February: On Saturday the 9th we’ll dance to the theme of “Hearts and Flowers,” and on Friday the 22nd we’ll have our annual anchor dance, “The Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball”. Terry Halley and K.C.Curtis will do the calling with Sandra Pinion cueing. As always, there will be prizes for the best masks. All our dances begin with Rounds at 7:30 followed by Plus at 7:45, Mainstream at 8:00 (fourth tip Plus) and refreshments at 10 pm. Grab your costume and come join us!

Our Ugly Christmas Sweater Dance on December 12th was a blast. We had enough dancers for about two or three squares on the floor. Although no one wore any "ugly" Christmas sweater, the lucky one who wore a most unique sweater won a prize. And, also, one lucky guest got a free ribbon to Mid Winter! Several other door prizes were given away as well. Thanks to everyone who made this dance a fun one.

Beginner Square Dance lessons are starting on Wednesday, January 9th. These will be held every week, on Wednesdays, at the Winona Grange in Tualatin, up to April, 7 to 9 p.m. After every lesson, refreshments will be served. If you know of anyone who wishes to learn how to square dance and join in on the fun, please come to these lessons. If you bring a friend, you will get a buy one and get one free discount! A note: If we do not get enough students, or any students at these lessons, we may turn them into club dances instead. In that case, they will be on every second and fourth Wednesday nights of each month. We will let everybody know if this happens.

See you in a square.

There were 3+ squares at our new dancer / Christmas Dance, and the new dancers attending seemed to have a good time, along with everyone else. We had a gift exchange game at break that had a few of us chuckling. This was Julie Stiers last dance to cue on contract for the Valley River Dancers after being with us for more than 4 years. We want to send Julie off with the warmest of good wishes for a great new year of cueing opportunities. The dance ended with our traditional sing a-long of Silent Night.

We are dark for our usual 4th Friday Mainstream dance in January for Mid-Winter Festival.

In February, we dance Plus on the 2nd Friday (February 8th) with Ken and Dianne Pratt cueing intermediate rounds and caller at this writing still to be determined. Prior to starting Plus at 8 pm (and going to 10:30 pm), we are continuing our round dance workshop beginning at 6:30 pm, followed by pre-rounds that start at 7:30 pm. We have members away on the Dibble Cruise so check just to be safe the when and where and social media for any update on this dance. General admission to the dance alone is $6 donation, and the workshop and pre-rounds alone is $6. The charge for attending both the workshop and dance is $10. The workshop focus is on Cha Cha and will move to Rumba at a future workshop.

Our 4th Friday (February 22nd) Mainstream Dance is our Birthday Dance. This dance is called by Randy Dibble and will be cued by Sherri Clark. This will be Sherri’s first dance as our new 4th Friday cuer. This dance has pre-Plus beginning at 7:30 pm with Mainstream and rounds until 10:30 pm. Come out for some fun dancing and a little birthday cake and help us celebrate our 14th.

Mainstream lessons begin again with Randy Dibble teaching Tuesdays at 6:30 pm at the Chehalem Community Center (south entrance) beginning February 19th. Singles and youth welcome. The first 2 lessons are free and thereafter $6. There is a discount for families/youth.

Our February dances will be lots of fun, come join us. Valley Squares February 2nd dance theme is “Groundhog Day” (did you see him?) with Daryl Clendenin and Renee Ruud calling, Connie Clark cueing. Let's celebrate, we're still dancing.

Our February 16th dance theme is “Sweetheart Dance” with Craig Abercrombie calling, Connie Clark cueing. Lets rev up the dance in red and chocolate! These will be very fun dances, hope you can join us!

Our classes started Jan 15th, but at this writing date I can't give any update, our reports are due a month prior. Come Angel if you can, the more dancers the better for the students.

And save the date, April 6th for Valley Squares 70th Anniversary Dance with “The Crew” calling and Connie Clark cueing. 70 years! Celebrate Big!

We have been dancing the month away! All of our students are getting as much floor time as possible to be ready for Mid-Winter! We had a great time at our annual holiday craft fair and are working at getting things together for our spring craft event. If you are interested in joining us, and purchasing a table to sell your crafts, please go to our website and contact us…space is still available.

Our New Dancer Dance is this month. It is the perfect time to brush up on all the calls before you head to Albany for the Mid-Winter Party. This dance will be held on January 13th, at 2:00 pm. The Umpqua Area Council is putting on this dance. If you are in the area, please join us at the barn for an afternoon of fun!

We welcomed in the New Year with a great dance. Everyone, including our new dancers, enjoyed a festive celebration. Spending time with people you enjoy and dancing in the New Year is one of the best ways to spend New Year’s Eve!

Happy dancing,
