Editor's Note

I, for one, am ready to welcome spring this week. The last few months have been long and cold.

There are lots of special dances going on this month. Take some time to browse through the listings and you're sure to find something close to you.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

Federation Meetings

The Federation's next executive board meeting will be on May 5 at the Rogue Valley Square Dance Center in Medford. A proposal to modify the Federation's constitution to include line dance clubs in the list of organizations eligible for Federation membership was read at the January meeting and will be voted on in May. If it passes, the proposal will be sent to the clubs for ratification.

Elections

Elextions for the Federation's 2019-20 officers are now in progress. Your club secretaries should have received the ballots, with need to be returned to the Federation Secretary by mid-April. You can read about the nominees here.

Summer Festival

We hope you are planning to attend the 2019 Summer Festival, to be held at the Blanchet School in Salem on July 19-21, 2019. This festival is sponsored by the entire Federation Board.

Take a minute to read the article from your festival chairman, Kathy Roberts, later in this issue.

Mid-Winter

Oregon's Mid-Winter Festival 2020 will be held January 24, 25 and 26, 2020, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Other National Events

The 68th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, June 26-29, 2019.

The 69th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in nearby Spokane, Washington, June 18-21, 2020.

Corporation Renewal Status

All clubs in the Oregon Federation are required to maintain their status as non-profit corporations with the State of Oregon. The Secretary of State's office mails out a renewal notice about a month before your registration expires every year. The following clubs expire this month:

April 1 -- Interstate Highlanders
April 7 -- ReVuN'Q
April 22 -- Tualatin Timber Squares
April 23 -- Salem Swingin' Stars
April 25 -- Valley Squares
April 26 -- Independence Wagon Wheelers

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
On March 30, 2019, the Emerald Empire Area Council and Cascade Callers and Cuers Association put on a benefit dance for Camp Alma, the former Sheriffs work camp, in the Lorane area, which is being converted into a rehabilitation training area for veterans This is one more way to thank and honor our veterans.

Our next scheduled 5th Saturday dance is June 29.

Keep on calling and cueing for fun!

Cast A Shadow
Again Cast A Shadow was only able to hold one dance in February as the second had to be canceled, but it was a fun one! We danced to recorded tips that Sunday, but we will have some live callers at least once a month starting April 14 with Dan Nordbye. Our coordinator Fred and his wife Kathleen had the opportunity to dance to Dan’s calling down in Mesa in February. I hope to do the same when I visit in March. We are looking forward to seeing our snowbirds back with us starting in April to fill out our squares. We miss you all!

The Cast A Shadow club dances normally twice a month, mostly to recorded music but often to a live caller as the opportunity presents itself. Our dancers come from around the area and beyond. We dance at the Emerald square Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield, in Hall B (entrance on the far side of the building) and would love to have other advanced dancers come join us when they are in the area. Right now no lessons are offered but if interest is shown that might be arranged. Please visit our website for more information on upcoming acnes: www.cas-sd.yolasite.com or call 541-741-4149.

In February we celebrated our 55th Sweetheart of a Birth Dance with just over five squares of dancers and visitors in the hall. We were pleased to see a very sizeable visitation by the Roseburg Buckeroos who love to visit other clubs on their birthdays and brought us a present too! Thank you all so much. We were hoping to see more of our former members and Lifetime Members who do not dance any longer, but the weather was a problem that night and with threat of icy streets some felt it advisable to stay safe at home. We were delighted to see founding Lifetime Member Babe Roshau come out with the help of her daughter and also Past President Florence Mulvihill who came with our member Chris Vanderlinde and stayed for much of the night. We had ample cake to go around thanks to our member Susan Mathers. Thank you, Susan, for ordering and picking it up for our delight. Enough was left over to serve at the Feb. 22 dance also. While the dance was not as well attended as we had hoped, it was a fun time with Jim Hattrick calling and Mark Wheeler thee to help Jim, who had to cue as well because Jackie Gale was under the weather with a bad virus of some sort.

Feb. 22 was a great time as well for George Hermann called and Jackie was back cueing. George always calls a fun, fast-paced dance for us, and we truly appreciated the three IWW couples who traveled all the way down here to dance with us. Such loyal members IWW has. We were very sorry to hear about Lee Ashwill and hope he okay as he as well as his wife Barbie are very much needed by the State Federation and his home club.

Several Single Trees attended the Boots N Sandals’ Chinese New Year’s Dance on Saturday, Feb. 23. What a fun time dancing to Lennie Ludiker’s calling and Christina Corellis cueing (her voice was gone but she has recordings she uses). This used to be one of the highlights of the winter season when Lennie called for the Fernridge Twirlers so many years ago.

We are looking forward to our spring dances and especially the combined Mexican Fiesta dance which will be held on Saturday, May 11 as the Whirl-A-Ways and Single Trees will be hosting on the WAWs' dance night this year. There will be the usual lavish taco bar to delight the lovers of Mexican food. Be sure to mark your calendars and come join us for this one.

We continue to dance Sunday nights from 5:30 - 8:00 at all levels with our competent caller and teacher, Tim Matteson at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield. We encourage dancers to come dance with us and get more floor time. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 or Tim at 541-988-0399 to make sure we are dancing as we go dark once in a blue moon. We don't want to miss you. Our dances/classes are always casual. We always have a lot of food too. Come for a fun evening almost every Sunday!

March was another busy month with dances on the 2nd and 16th with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. March 16 was our St. Patty’s Dance with lots of green. Then on the 30th we have our Super Mysterious Mystery Trip. It promises to be lots of fun.

April 6 is our Hippie Dance with Charlotte and Jackie and the first Saturday in May will be our Cinco de Mayo Taco Dance.

We have already started preparations for our Strawberry Festival Dances and Weekend on May 31 - June 2. As usual, RVs are welcome. We will have our Silent Auction, Experienced Clothing Sale, Spaghetti Feed on Friday night, potluck on Saturday night, and breakfast on Sunday morning. Of course, strawberry shortcake will be served at the Saturday night dance. Dan Nordbye will be calling for our Saturday night dance and Jackie Gale will be cueing. Mark your calendar to come and enjoy all the festivities.

See you in a square!

Hello to all of you. As I write this, spring has NOT sprung yet and it is still cold outside. Old Man Winter seems to just want to hang on. I, personally, am done with him!

Our classes are doing well and the dancers are dancing more and more each week. Waltz is going well and we are adding more moves in the cha class as we get in to a few more of the difficult moves. We are still in the Phase 3-4 mode, but the lessons are going well. The later class put together a list of dances they would like to dance more and put the list down on paper. I don’t know how many they came up with, but I am sure it will grow as the dancers think about the dances of the past that they liked.

We are working on having a small business meeting to vote for Federation officers, club officers, talking about our June birthday dance, and co-hosting the Fall Festival dance in September.

Salem Swingin' Stars
Happy New Year. I know it’s late, but lots of things have been happening with the Salem Swingin' Stars. By the time you read this, we will have had our Annual Hobo Dance on the 15th of March. Such fun. February was our Wear Red Dance and our Valentine's Dance. We had a visitation from IWW as George Hermann was our guest caller that evening. 26 members of their club joined us and we had six squares on the floor.

April brings us our 53rd Birthday Dance on April 19, as well as the election of new officers. On April 28, which is a Sunday, Stars are hosting a special Memorial Dance for Manuel Machado. Everyone is invited. There will be no cost for dancers. Please wear pink to honor Manuel. Look for the flyer for more information.

Stars will be DARK on May 3 so we can all attend the Pacific Northwest Teen Festival in Silverton at the Silverton High School. One of our very own club members will be dancing in the junior level. Go Kailee!!

We have a correction over the last club report: due to weather, we didn't actually hold our February birthday dance. So we will have cake at our March dance instead.

We graduated our new dancer class! We had two students graduate at the end of February. They both went to Mid-Winter and as they are also youth, they are part of our competition team.

Competition practice has started. We are practicing on both Sunday and Tuesday evenings. Don Benson and Ian Craig are working with the teams on Sundays and Thomas Buchheit will be doing most of the Tuesday class. At least that is the plan for Tuesdays. We were so glad that Leonard Snodgrass was available to fill in for Thomas recently when Thomas got called into work unexpectedly.

Mom (Karyn Buchheit) still has spots open for volunteers for the Teen Festival. If you are interested, please call or email her: 503-873-5241 or buchheitfarmkm@gmail.com

Our fundraiser dance did ok. We had about three squares of dancers present. We had fun dancing to Leonard and Frances. Bruce Lowther, Judy Russell and Julia Buchheit all did guest spots. See you at a dance soon.

Happy Hoppers - Link
February 16th was a lucky day for all the Happy Hopper members and guests attending our dance. How was it lucky? It was the Hoppers’ first “Lucky Dance.” What is a “Lucky Dance?” It’s a dance at which members and guests are not asked to make the usual door donation, thus it is a free dance. The dates of a “Lucky Dance” are random and known only to the Amundsons and the Chases, so no one knows when the next “Lucky Dance” will happen. Perhaps the next time you visit our club we will have another “Lucky Dance.”

Speaking of “lucky,” the Hoppers have found something else to feel lucky about. Although leaving the Square Dance Center was a sad day for our club, we have discovered that our new location has opened the door to a new group of dancers. The location is in a part of Clark County where no square dance clubs were currently dancing. Once the word got out in the area, we began attracting local people to our lessons. They are especially enthusiastic, and we are feeling lucky to have them.

Being in existence for 60 years is another “lucky” thing to celebrate. On May 4th the Hoppers will celebrate their longevity with an anniversary dance. It promises to be a unique and fun dance as the theme is a play on the words of the dance date, the fourth of May. The decision was made to do a spoof on the Star Wars saying, “May the force be with you.” Thus, the theme is “May the Fourth Be with You.” Guests who enjoy dressing to a theme and wish to come in costume are invited to dress as their favorite Star Wars character. Of course, square dance attire is always welcome. So, mark your calendars and plan to come and enjoy a unique anniversary dance with us.

Oaky Doaks - Link
Hello everyone,

The other day my granddaughter was telling me that she had learned a new song in Sunday School about a crossed-eyed bear named Gladly. After talking to her mother we realized that the hymn my granddaughter had been singing was really: "Gladly The Cross I'd Bear". Now I don't know if Caller Mark Wheeler or Cuer Mark McDonald will be playing a song about a crossed-eyed bear name Gladly but I sure they have some gospel songs that everyone will enjoy dancing to. Come join the Oaky Doaks at our "Gospel Dance" on Saturday, April 6th, with Pre-rounds starting at 7:00 pm and Mainstream with Rounds starting at 7:30 pm. Open break during the dance with announcements at 9:30.

April will find the Oaky Doaks will be home at the Oak Grove Community Hall for the first Saturday dance only. On the third Saturday of April we will be going to the beach at Lincoln City. We invite all dancers to come join us at the Best Western – Landmark Inn on Highway 101. Anyone interested in staying with us for the weekend can get a special rate by contacting the hotel directly when making reservations. Just let them know they will be attending our dance there. To get the special rate reservations need to be made no later than April 1st.

The first Saturday in May will find the Oaky Doaks going dark as we will be in Silverton attending the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival where the Silver City Squares youth will be once again be defending their first place title. This year’s festival is May 4th & 5th at Silverton High School, 1456 Pine Street, Silverton, Oregon. This is the 70th year that the PNTSDF has been held and only the 3rd time in Oregon. Come join us in encouraging the youth who are our future to square dancing.

See you across the square!

Gary - Oaky Doaks Visitation Chair

And now a message from the Oaky Doaks president:

Unfortunately due to the lack of visitors to our club dances and the fact that we have become a very small dance club, there have had to be some changes made within the club. Starting Saturday February 16th, 2019 we will no longer be using the lower floor of the Oak Grove Community club for our break. The break will be held as an open break using the small upper kitchen area and table(s) in the back of the hall. I realize this may be an inconvenience and a bit unorthodox, however it is going to help our club save money. This saddens me because it will be harder for us to socialize with each other. This is a cost cutting measure only it is nothing against socializing or our friendship. It will save the club $70.00 a month which will add up over the year. At present time we are financially going in the hole every month, and if we do not change something then we will be on the list of clubs no longer dancing. I for one do not want to see that happen. This is a fun club that is going through a rough time. The only way that we can get through this struggle is for all of us to work harder as a single unit to become stronger and support our clubs in the best way possible that we can.

Thank You

Keith Miles

President

The Charlie's January Mainstream class is full of energy and excitement!! We have 20 students, with 18 under 25 yrs of age!!! They will complete their 2nd plateau on March 26th. We welcome everyone to join us as we celebrate their accomplishment. Our Thursday Funshops have been helping strengthen the dancing skills of Mainstream & Plus dancers.. They are open to any graduated dancer, so please join us when you can. 630pm is the Mainstream Funshop and 8pm is the Plus Funshop.

Our March dances were lots of fun. On the 2nd we had Phil-Billy and Rikki to entertain the dancers. We had 3 squares and it was a fun & enjoyable dance. On the 16th we welcomed guest caller Richard Lane and cuer Bob Dingman for a wonderful evening of dancing enjoyment. There were 5 squares and we alternated Plus & Mainstream throughout the nite. We also enjoyed some advanced prior to pre-rounds. Richard is always fun and it's nice to have him a little closer now that he and Leslye live in Roseburg.

We are dark for our first dance in April. We will be visiting the Buckeroo's for their birthday dance. Guest caller will be Charlie Robertson from OK, who we all enjoyed dancing to at MidWinter. Cuer will be Rikki Lobato. 7pm for Plus/rounds. There will also be a Camp DBD on Sunday with Charlie and this is a great opportunity to improve your skills in Advanced & Plus. 1pm for Advanced & 230 for Plus. Our dance on April 20th will be at a special time due to other events happening at the Fairgrounds that evening. Dancing starts at Noon and will go until 3pm. Chuck & Bob will be calling and cueing. This will be a regular dance with the community invited to watch & participate.

Planning is in full swing for Boatnik Memorial weekend. We are beyond excited to welcome Joe Saltel and TJ(Bruce) Chadd for the weekend party. Be sure and get your ribbons before the price goes up. Our June 15th dance will be very special; be on the lookout for flyers!!!

Greetings from Yreka,

This month's news will be short.

I assume by now most of you know the council dance was our final dance at Greenhorn Grange. I want to assure you our president myself and Sherrie are actively looking for a new venue for our dances. Please look at our fliers closely to see where the remaining dances are being held. We may have to dance in several locations for a while until something suitable is found. Feel free to contact myself, Sherrie, or our president for directions if you have any questions.

We are looking at many options for our club, and hope everyone will help and support us during this process.

Hope to see you on the floor

The last “Game Night” was March 15th. What a lot of fun we had. Come out and join us. It is a “Hoot.” If you don’t play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on, or if there is some other “Game” you would like to play, let us know. We are open to most any table game. We always have a potluck with a theme. The next one will most likely be in June. There is a lot going on in April & May with Pear Blossom & Boatnik.

Phil Ramey has been doing a Mainstream/Plus Workshop on Wednesdays to give everyone who feels a little shaky about some moves, a chance to come out and practice. There are generally 2 squares plus. He is even throwing in a little bit of Advanced. Don’t worry, it is easy Advanced. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening and maybe learn something. There is a lot of laughter and we are having a ball.

At the March 23rd dance, we collected clean, plus stuffed animals to donate to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department to give to children in stressful situations. Thanks to all who contributed. There was representation from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department on hand to receive the animals & express their appreciation for this gesture.

Preparations for Diamond Lake Festival are coming along nicely. Everything seems to be right on schedule. Get your ribbons for a great time.

Our April dances are scheduled for better weather I have been assured. Rain perhaps but no snow is forecast. Our caller and cuer, Jim Hattrick, will be on the Hazel Dell Grange stage on the evening of the 13th. Still recovering from his last mishap, a dislocated shoulder, he keeps the squares on their toes.

We have waited until the 27th of April to have a Spring Fling. We encourage everyone to wear bright spring colors. We will have Darrell Kalmbach calling for us that evening and Tami Helms cueing. This should be a great dance as both of these folks are special to our club and to square dancers everywhere.

Our dances start at 7 PM with an hour of Plus tips and Mainstream from 8PM till closing.

Looking forward to an even bigger and better dance year. Encourage your friends and neighbors to try it one time. It is nothing like they had in school years ago. We start a new class at the first Tuesday of each month and since most classes are small we progress at the speed of the learners.

See you on the floor.

February kept us busy. We started plus classes on February 4th with ten students who are progressing well in spite of having a snow day. We selected Chet Wolter and Carolyn Hindman to be King and Queen of Hearts at our Valentine dance. They received chocolate and flowers but in return they have to plan the event for next year.

We received Games for our Entertainment Basket as donation to the Alzheimer's fundraising TVC dance on Sunday, May 19th.

No fooling, we will be dancing April 1st, April Fool’s Day. Dance with us. We will not play April fool jokes on you. And it is not to late to celebrate Spring. On March 30th come to the TVC Spring Fling, IOOF Hall, Hillsboro, 7:30 PM.

If you need some stress release before tax day then stress out at our Anniversary Dance, April 14th, Sunday, Pre Plus & Intermediate rounds are 1:00 to 1:45. Mainstream and Rounds 1:45 to 3:30, IOOF Hall, Hillsboro. Jim Hattrick MC, also Daryl Clendenin, Darrell Kalmbach and Joyce Hooper. The open break will have lots of appetizers, finger foods, and desserts.

Plan ahead for summer fun. Summer Fest is in Salem, July 19th-21st. If you can only go for one day, Saturday is $25 at the door.

Sometimes we have some fun challenging ourselves by switching guys and gals roles. It is not unusual for a gal to dance the guy’s part although some of the newer dancers says this can be confusing. I found wearing a hat helps. The challenge come when two guys are partners or when a guy and gal switch roles. You really have to know what you are doing to be successful but when you don’t it can get pretty funny. It is a win-win situation.

Earth Day is April 22nd. Give Mother Earth a little love, she needs all the help she can get.

Our plus classes are in full swing so now is the time to brush up on your Plus or come join in the fun of Plus, only $4. No special outfit needed.

The nominating committee has submitted names to the club for consideration. Our slate of officers are

Mike & Sally Duyck - President, Ferrous & Karen Steinka - VP, Marguerite Morin, Secretary, Treasurer, Dolores Fullmer, Leslie Tallman - Delegate, John Semm - Delegate. We vote in April, and take office in June.

We dance every Monday afternoon, even on holidays except Christmas and New Years. Our callers keep us on our toes each week, always seeming to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. During lessons our schedule is 12:00 - 1:15 class, then 1:15 - 3:00 pm plus and rounds at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

I’m still freezing to death and February is over! February of 2019 is one for the weather record books and not in a good way. Even the National Weather Service and local newscasters were befuddled. The biggest befuddlement of all was for Saturday, February 9th, the night of the Hoedowners’ Roaring 20’s Dance. The professionals forecast a roaring, multi-day snow storm. As the professionals say, “In an abundance of caution” the Hoedowners, and every school district, performing arts and athletic group, cancelled. As you know the snowmageddon, snowpocalypse, snowzilla was just a wet whimper. Ahh, well my flapper costume will have to lurk in the closet until the Hoedowners re-schedule another Roaring 20’s Dance. Watch this space for updates!

Two weeks later the Hoedowners celebrated their 69th Anniversary Dance. We started the evening with our Annual Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner with baked beans, mac and cheese, coleslaw, potato salad, rolls and butter. Then it was upstairs to dance. Darlene Ditsworth decorated the ballroom with vintage club outfits and our wooden dancing couples were decked out in club outfits too. Unfortunately Daryl started feeling ill so Mike Stout stepped in and called for us; a BIG Hoedowner thank you for saving the evening. Dancers congregated downstairs in the dining room for cake and punch. We wrote “69 Years Young” on the quickly devoured cake.

April’s but weeks away so I want to remind you that on April 13th we’ll hold our Circus Dance. Have clowns been able to improve their reputation? No matter, there will be clowns, and other denizens of the big top in attendance. Sorry ladies, Hugh Jackman is unavailable but who doesn’t love circus food??

On April 27th we’ll be off to the Wild, Wild West for our second dance of the month. Is your cowboy hat ready, boots and scarves? Blue jeans are a must and dig out that western belt with the big buckle. A little fringe improves the outfit. Plan to see you along the trail.

This month's writing is a bit different from usual. It's about our visitation to Valley River Squares, where we danced to our own caller, Randy Dibble. We also had a chance to dance the rounds to Sherri Clark as she is now a local cuer.

We had hoped to retrieve our banner. Unfortunately, three people who had planned to come were indisposed. While we missed them, we had a good time dancing with some long time friends and made some new ones.

This will come out enough ahead of TVC's Fifth Friday dance at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro for everyone to be reminded in time. We look forward to dancing to our favorite caller, Randy Dibble, and favorite cuer, Jeanine Norden March 30th, with every third tip plus.

Hope to see you there!

The really bad weather in February seemed to be skirting around us, EXCEPT for the night of our second Friday dance which was to be our Valentine's dance. It seemed prudent to cancel the dance due to the winter weather advisory.

By the fourth Saturday we were eager to be dancing again, very few were left sitting on the sidelines and the floor was full!

Plus dancers! Here is something to plan for in April and May: Plus lessons/workshop on Wednesday evenings 7 - 9. There will be dancing for everyone. Beginning April 10th through May 22nd. The cost will be $2.50 per person. We hope you will enjoy this opportunity. Thank you Craig.

In April don't miss our first dance on Friday the 12th, this is our April Showers dance and the ONLY dance in April. We will be dark for April 27th freeing you up to attend Salty Sashayers or Yakima Sashay. We hope you will enjoy those dances then join us again the second Friday of May.

Please remember that our dances are now ending at 9:30pm. 7-8 Plus and advanced rounds, 8-9:30pm Mainstream with rounds. 106 NW 8th, Kelso/Longview intersection on Ocean Beach Hwy. Craig Abercrombie calling and Lonnie Sycks cueing. Our website www.r-square-d.info is a great way to keep track of our club and events or friend us on Facebook.

BRRR! Baby its cold outside! Well, one way to warm up is to come out and dance with the Toes.

We had several visitors to our Ducky Dance with lots of ducky themed treats and of course Dinky the HUGE blow up duck was there to MC.

Looking ahead to the April activities, April 5th we are NOT at Kinton Grange, but will be dancing at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro. That dance will be all Gospel singing calls for our “Heavenly Hoedown” dance.

April 19th is “Hop on over for a good time” dance.

April 28th is our “Spring Celebration Ham Dinner & Bazaar at the Kinton Grange. The hours on this event are 12:00-4:00

We hope to see you at one or all of these fun events.

In February we held our annual anchor dance “the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball” but we had fewer people attend this year, due to the cold weather and competition from other clubs on the same night. Otherwise it was a great dance, called by Terry Halley and K.C. Curtis, with terrific costumes and prizes. Also in February our Mainstream and Waltz classes continued.

In April we plan to visit the Valley Squares for their 70th anniversary dance. Also we will hold our annual election of new officers during a dinner in Dundee at La Sierra Mexican Grill, which has a great side room. Tri Squares are planning two April dances: “Pay It Forward” on Saturday, the 13th, when we will be collecting items for the Tigard Good Neighbor Center (for homeless families); and “Grace Notes” on Friday, the 26th, which will have all gospel and singing calls. Our caller and cuer for both dances will be Terry Halley and Sandra Pinion. Hope you can join us!

At our dance on February 13th, the new dancer couple from the Toe Draggers came back and thoroughly enjoyed our dance. Also, we gave a crash course in Mainstream to another new student who had just arrived at this dance. I do not know whether he had square danced before, but he did really well with the moves that were taught him for the first time.

Our dance on February 27th was cancelled due to the weather.

Our dances in March are on the 13th and the 27th.

Our 3RD ANNIVERSARY DANCE is coming!!! It will be on Wednesday, April 24, at the Winona Grange in Tualatin. 7 to 9 p.m. This will be a Basic Level dance with every third tip Mainstream. Caller will be Janienne Alexander, and the cuer will be Sherri Clark. And, there will be plenty of FOOD during this dance. Save the date!!!

We welcome all new dancers at all levels! If any of our visiting new dancers have trouble with some of the moves, Janienne will gladly workshop the moves with the dancers.

See you around in a square.

The Valley River Dancers dance Plus on 2nd Fridays, and Mainstream on 4th Fridays in Newberg at the Chehalem Community Center, located on the corner of 2nd and Howard Streets.

We have new cuers: Ken Pratt cues 2nd Friday; Sherri Clark cues 4th Friday

A Cha Cha/Ph III Waltz workshop continues in April preceding the 2nd Friday dance (April 12th), led by Ken and Dianne Pratt, beginning at 6:30 pm. If you want to brush up your round dancing, come on out!

It was much appreciated to have Darrell Kalmbach call our February Plus Dance while Randy Dibble and some of our members were away and on the Dibble Cruise.    We were visited by the Promenaders Plus who came to support the Kalmbach/Pratt duo, giving us 3 lively squares!   Our anniversary dance was also in February.   Randy Dibble called the dance and Sherri Clark cued her first dance for us.   We had club visitations from the Sunset Promenaders, who took a banner home with them, Mix and Mingle and the Toe Draggers, as well as guests from a number of other clubs.   A big thanks to all who made it out to help us celebrate. We were happy to have 5 squares, especially in light of Tri-Squares having their annual Mardi Gras dance on the same night, which has historically been a well-attended dance.

Ian Craig called our Plus dance in March as Randy Dibble and some members were dancing in Kennewick. We had 2 Squares. Looking forward to better weather for safer travel for the area dances soon.

April 20th dance; Easter Egg Hunt with Scott Zinser calling, 7-8 pm Plus, 8-10 pm Mainstream. We will be hiding eggs (plastic) with goodies inside for you to find.

Valley Squares Members want to thank Daryl Clendenin, Craig Abercrombie, Scott Zinser, Mark Wheeler and Connie Clark for calling and cuing for our Club in February and March. We appreciate each of you.

A bit of Sunshine: Bea Cook (who joined Valley Squares in 1973) fell and broke her hip bone. And a retired, long time member Joe Thomas (he joined in 1974) fell and broke his upper leg. Both are recovering nicely.

Our classes are coming along great. We have 16 students who are having a great time, very energetic.

Yellowrock,

Carolene Siebert

What a month we have had here at the Buckeroo Barn! The winter storm that came through Douglas County left a mess! We had many members without power for multiple days. There are some folks in the community who have now been without power for nearly three weeks and still have no idea when it will get restored. I guess that is life in the country.

We had to cancel some events at the barn, but are now back to our regular schedule. We started a community game night a few months back and it has been a big success. We open the barn up to the Roseburg community and have games available for everyone. Board games, card games, and even a game of Twister could be found. Everyone that showed up had a great time.

Remember… we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Keep dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
