October 2019

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 October 2019
President's Corner

Hello to Oregon from your new OFSRDC President.

I am looking forward to this year.

My goal for this year is to have all clubs, councils and experienced dancers recruit and support all of Oregon’s new dancers and Oregon’s youth dancers.

New dancers and youth are our future for without them our activity will eventually fade away due to lack of numbers. We need to bring them in to our lessons and clubs, help them learn, support them at lessons, new dancer dances, festivals and as recent graduates. We need to mentor them and help them to get out to visit other clubs and attend festivals-even if this means we have to take a little of our time and effort and reach out to them.

I challenge every experienced dancer to do their very best to bring a new student to lessons this year; to act as a mentor to a new dancer or a youth dancer; to offer to pick someone up and drive them to a lesson or a regular club dance or to a visitation. Encourage new dancers and youth to attend a festival, offer to meet up with them there and help them find their way around. Help fill out a square so that others can dance, don’t leave it up to someone else.

Please join me in supporting our new dancers and youth, they are our future and our lifeblood for without them our favorite activity will eventually fade away.

Karyn Buchheit

Our next scheduled dance is November 30 at the dance center in Springfield. The members of CCCA will call and cue a fun dance for you! The floor in our hall is cushioned and so nice to dance on. We also have new ElectroVoice speakers purchased from Dan Nordbye. The speakers work well.

Keep on calling and cueing for fun,

Christina Corelli

Cast A Shadow - Link
We had the opportunity to dance in Hall B at the Emerald square Dance Center three times in August. Dan Nordbye called for us once and we got to dance to him yet again before he takes off for his winter schedule down in Texas and Mesa, AZ. We ae so lucky that he will drive down from Candy for call for us as it is such fun to dance to a live caller rather than recordings. However, our coordinator Fred Beise does a great job of choosing excellent material which he downloads from the Internet with the callers’ permission.

We would love to have more advanced dancers come join us for a Sunday afternoon of fun dancing. We have quite ofen had two squares of dancers on the floor but on occasion we have been short one or two dancers. We have lots of experienced dancers to help fairly new people bring up their skills to b e able to dance at festivals and conventions where advanced is offered.

We dance at least twice a month, Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 in Hall B (backside of the building) at 2095 Yolanda Ave., Springfield OR. Please check our website at CAS-SD.yolasite.com or call (541) 741-4149 to make sure we are dancing. At times we have had to cancel our dances because not enough people were able to come.

We held two dances in August at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield. The first was our Hawaiian Luau Dance with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing. This dance is always fun as many will dig out their Hawaiian garb and come relaxed and casual for this event (lots of leis but no hula skirts this year). We were happy to see some guests form north of us join us as well as many Whirl-A-Ways out on the floor.

Our second dance was called by Terry Halley and cued by Jackie Gale. We thank Terry for driving so far to call for us with his fine baritone voice. We heard about Bill Gale’s upcoming neck surgery and found out that he came through it all right. We hope he will be out of pain. This was the last dance of the year for us but it was good to host square dances for the many dancers whose clubs for dark for the summer.

We are looking forward to seeing how everyone responds to our new dance format starting in September. We will no longer have a formal sit down break but will dance straight through 7:30PM to 10:00PM with announcements and clean up at 10PM with a half an hour of plus followed by mainstream.

On the fourth Saturday in August the Boots N Sandals held their final dance with Lennie Ludiker calling. Some Single Trees were there to say good-bye to this fun club and remember the good old days dancing in their barn in Cottage Grove. They had a good ru n but losing their barn was a hard blow. Dancing at our hall in Springfield just wasn’t the same. We’ll miss you, Boots!

Keep on dancing and supporting one another,

Gaynor Hintz

As I write this, we're looking ahead to our mainstream lessons starting on October 2 and we're hoping for a good-sized class. This fall we’re once again partnering with Linn-Benton Community College and the class will be held at the Benton Center in Corvallis, with Bruce Lowther instructing. Our dance season started on Sept. 14 with a free, all-comers dance to introduce folks to square and line dancing. Our hope is that it will attract folks to the joy of square dancing! We're grateful to be able to continue dancing on the second and fourth Saturdays at the hall at the Congregational church with its lovely wood floor. We're having our yearly Halloween dance on October 26 and it will be a fun and festive time! Happy Autumn everyone! Karen

Labor Day Weekend at Frank and Marianne Cawrse's farm was a glorious event for many square dancers who came with their RVS and tents. There were potlucks every night, lots of fun and games and dancing with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing from the top of the silo. What fun!

Our club started mainstream lessons on Sunday, September 15 at 6:30 PM at the IOOF Hall in Lebanon. Charlotte Jeskey is the instructor.

Our club will have a regular dance on October 5 and our annual Black Light dance on the 19th. We always love to have visitors. See you in a square!

Even though this article is for the October issue of the OFN, I am writing about September activities.

On Sept. 5, the club had a party night with requests before we started our fall season of dancing on Sept. 12. We reverted to the schedule as follows: 6:30-7:15 p.m. is review of previously learned rhythms; 7:15-7:45 p.m. is floor time dancing; 7:45-8:30 p.m. is Rumba class and 8:30-9:30 p.m. is for the higher level dancers with 4+ and 5. There is something for everyone.

Our club is co-host for the Mid-Willamette Area council Fall Festival that is being held in Woodburn on September 29 from 1:30-4:30. Golden Squares are the other co-hosts. Ice cream will be served with pie or root beer. Come join us for some fun and good eats for a Sunday afternoon. Marilyn Schmit

By the time you read this we will be nearly into Fall. Wow, where has this year gone ?

Salem Swingin' Stars has had many great dances with dancers from all over the area in attendance. Our 5th Friday Plus Dance in August had five squares on the floor!

Mainstream lessons started on September 11 and will continue through mid January. There is also a Plus Workshop after the Mainstream lessons led by Randy Dibble.

Our Annual Corn 'n Cluck Dance on September 20 was another fantastic dance with great food and of course, that Crazy Chicken. October brings us two regular dances which will be tons of fun. See you all on the Dance Floor.

We joined other dancers at the State Fair for the youth time slot and we had about 30 dancers there. We are back dancing as of September, so please come see us.

Thomas Buchheit of our club is now Oregon Federation Youth Advisor and Mom (Karyn Buchheit) is now State President. So our family is very busy with meetings.

Lessons started at the end of September for us as we are trying a later starting date to see if that works better in bringing in students. See you at a dance soon.

Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares has had a busy summer with its themed dances: Baseball for June, Summer Fun for July, & Watermelon for August. We are looking forward to our September dance on the fourth Saturday, which will be Oktoberfest themed. You won’t want to miss weaving the colorful ribbons in a pattern around the Maypole! Our birthday dance, which marks our Silver Anniversary, will be taking place in October, and our New Dancer dance, which includes a used clothing sale, will be the first of December. Be sure to take note of these upcoming dances! (There will be no regular Willamette Squares dance in January due to Mid-Winter Festival.) We are going on a visitation to Braids & Braves in McMinnville the third Saturday on Sept. 21.

As far as lessons go, after much discussion, we decided we could be most effective by supporting Independence Wagon Wheelers in their efforts to provide square dance lessons at the Salem Hospital. We will make ourselves available as angels and promote the lessons as best we can. The lessons will take place on Sunday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. We hope by combining our efforts we can have a larger impact on those who want to learn to square dance.

On a personal note, Willamette Squares president, John Templin, will again be returning to Arizona for the winter months. Willamette Squares will carry on, but we will miss his presence with us.

Four squares attended the PAC 5th-Friday Dance on August 30th with Daryl Clendenin and Sherri Clark as Caller and Cuer - what a great way to kick off the Labor Day weekend. We appreciate all who joined us.

Announcement: the PAC 5th-Friday dance on November 29th, has been cancelled - it’s a long Thanksgiving weekend…enjoy!

Please mark your calendar for these PAC 5th-FRIDAY dances in (the first half of 2020)…

CALLER/CUER: Girls Night Out (Sandy Harris, Jackie Gale & Cora Lynn Butz)

Did you attend the State Federation events of September 7th-8th at Maplewood Grange? PAC and other councils too, truly did serve a potluck worthy of a King (and Queen) on Saturday. Much praise was expressed for the good food - thanks to ALL who provided such a fine meal (the beginning to a good party) and the angels who worked hard to spic-n-span the kitchen and return the hall to as-found condition.

Eight+ squares attended the State dance, on Saturday, with Scott Zinser calling and Dave Cooper cueing - these two guys know how to throw a party! When the Federation Executive Board was introduced, both side benches, that run the length of the Grange, were filled with dancers and several were still standing - all our councils certainly gave our Federation Board a BIG welcome! In addition the Portland Area Council also had Board members and Delegates in attendance and PAC dancers were a big reason attendance was so great. Warm is a good feeling...thanks to every ONE who made this weekend such a huge success.

On Sunday, September 8th, the State Federation Board met and Incoming Officers were installed.

As PAC scurried about, with enthusiasm over the weekend, to see all our planning come together, we are met with the knowledge that hosting is only a small part of the big picture. We wish to express our gratitude to all the Federation for the work you do!! With PAC’s new-found knowledge, we will be ready, come 2022, to once again host the State Federation meetings.

See you in a square!

We’ve only a square of new dancers in our classes. Regardless of that, our club is strong with a central core of dedicated dancers. Also interesting is that most of our new applicants this year have had prior experience with square dancing, and several coming to us from other established clubs.

Effective immediately, our standard dance donation for members will drop to $5, and remain at $6 for non-members. The board feels this will give an encouragement for more of our regular visitors to become members. Pending members are always treated as regular members until they are voted on, so if they fill out an application form, they too will get in for $5.

Our Sept 15th inter-club picnic went well. Essentially, we rented the pavilion and the stage at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. Frankly, it cost us a bundle but we had a barrel of fun! Other than dancing each week and a monthly visitation, the club does few activities, so this was something different for us. A little more than two squares turned out (mostly visitors), so we had a square in the pavilion and a square on the stage. We entertained several passers-by. We need to give a big thanks to Scott Zinser for donating his caller services to this event.

In spite of the cost of renting out this park, our club is financially well. By reducing our door donation to $5 we are among the lowest of requested donations from dancers.

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
The Chaps and Petticoats were one shy of a square at the Beachcombers weekend dance (August 30-Sept. 2nd) in Port Orford. The weather was perfect for dancing-in-the-surf Saturday morning. The men’s pie making totaled twenty (20) pies created Saturday afternoon, potluck was fabulous and KC Curtis & Dave Cooper put their hearts into some good “raising the roof” fun. The party continued Sunday with Terry Halley (caller) and Cathy Houston in a duet on stage: Terry sang while Cathy cued. The Beachcomber’s 20th annual Battle Rock Festival hosted 31 RV’s and nine (9) squares dancing Friday through Saturday and six (6) squares Sunday. Approximately $3,000 was received in donations (pie auction attributed $1,000) to aid in a new roof for the hall. Congratulations!

What a way to open our dancing season - with a Trail’s End Dance (to the State meetings) on September 6th - Scott Zinser, Caller Advisor to PAC, called and Dave Cooper cued. PAC’s President, Keith Miles, was in attendance as were other PAC Delegates and Representatives. Four squares enjoyed dancing and Cooper shared stories of Scott Zinser’s early years in square dance, including his T-shirt that hangs in the Beachcombers hall in lieu of a visitation banner.

We are very much in need of Angels to host our ladies taking Cha-cha lessons that began on September 15th (4-5:30pm) at the Maplewood Grange. Angels dance for free, each Sunday; please come and help our students learn.

Our 1st and 3rd Friday dances in October feature: Scott Zinser and Tami Helms on the October 4th “Pirate” dance (be there or walk-the-plank) and Darrell Kalmback and Connie Clark on October 18th. Scott Zinser and Leonard Snodgrass will call/cuer the Chaps dance on November 1st - please join us. Chaps and Petticoats will be DARK on November 15th.

October brings our 59th Club Anniversary to be celebrated at the first Saturday dance. We will be sharing garden produce for door prizes and having pie and ice cream at break. Craig Abercrombie will be calling and cueing that dance. We are working on some pictures to display the history of our club for that event.

On October 20th, we have our Ham, Egg, Pancake Breakfast and Bazaar fund raiser. The square dance community is always great about supporting this and we hope this year is no exception. Come enjoy some breakfast and see what the crafty Cut-Ups have made to offer at the bazaar this year. There will be raffles also.

We will be dancing as usual on the 4th Saturday for anyone not making it to the Seaside Sashay. It will be our Halloween Black Light Dance, so come dance to Scott Zinser and Tami Helms for a spooky evening party!

Happy Hoppers - Link
After two successful summer dances, the rainy the fall season arrived in September, and the Hoppers were back in the swing of things with our regular dance format. We celebrated a “Back to School” dance where school supplies were collected for a local elementary school and a “Johnny Appleseed Dance” featuring all apple desserts for our break. Yum! We were especially pleased to have a great turnout of new and returning students when lessons resumed on September 9th. In addition to Jim Hattrick’s terrific teaching skills, we are blessed with a large number of club members who act as angels to help and encourage new dancers. The energy level and enthusiasm during lessons make the evening fun for everyone.

Now we are looking forward to October activities. Considering the amazing cooks we have in our club, our October 19th “Harvest Days” dance featuring all pumpkin desserts should be an outstanding treat for members and guests. In addition to our own dances, a number of Hopper members have traditionally attended two fun filled weekend events: the Octoberfest put on by R Square D and The Seaside Sashay. Each weekend has its own special flavor, but both embody the spirit of square dancing: fun, fellowship, and dance. We’re looking forward to seeing you in a square somewhere.

River City Dancers we’re out in large numbers doing visitations to Country Cut Ups and the PAC dance in August. We also brought two squares to the State Federation Dance on September 7. We love visitations. If you bring a visitation to us, we will come visit you.

We began our lessons for new and returning dancers on Sunday September 8. We are happy with how many attended and how well they are doing. We are offering the first EIGHT lessons free on Sunday evenings at 6 PM at our hall at the Milwaukie Community Center where we dance in Milwaukie at 42nd and Jackson.

We dance every second and third Saturday and our first dance each month is a theme dance. Our September 14 dance will be a Disney Dance where many of us will dress in costume. The October theme dance will focus on Fall Harvest.

On October 6, our cuer Couple Tami Helms and Tim Keck will offer two step round dance lessons from 3-5 PM at our hall. Also in October, we will be lending our support for breast cancer research at OHSU by attending the “Are You Man Enough to Wear Pink?” dance for the cure dance at Kinton Grange sponsored by Toe Draggers club. This is also on Sunday October 6 and is from 1:30 -4:30. PM.

The Ramblers kicked off another series of lessons with Free Tastes of Square Dancing on August 28 and September 4 at the Bridgeport United Church of Christ in NE Portland. We have an enthusiastic group of students and look forward to sharing the joys of square dancing with them!

After our summer break, we resumed our monthly dances with Kris Jensen calling on September 14. Kris always does a great job with creative choreography—and she’s so patient when we can’t seem to remember our right from our left.

Our next monthly dance will be October 12, with Richard Lane calling. Our monthly dances are at the Oak Grove Community Center, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., in Oak Grove. We alternate Mainstream and Plus tips from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Everyone is welcome!

It’s not too late to get in on one of the finest events of the Portland area square dance year. We’ll be hosting our three-day dance weekend October 25-27 at the Multnomah Arts Center in Multnomah Village. In addition to hours and hours of dancing at all levels from Basic through C-2 (we have two different dance halls all day Saturday), we’ll feed you a picnic dinner on Friday night, a catered Thai buffet on Saturday night, and Sunday brunch. And we have our always entertaining costume contest on Saturday night. We are expecting dancers from Seattle, Vancouver BC, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, and ????. If you love to dance and love to meet new people, this is the extravaganza for you! You can find more information on our webpage www.rosetownramblers.com.

Several will be visiting the Circle N Squares Birthday Dance on September 21 with Eric Henerlau calling and Rikki Lobato cueing. The next birthday dance for this council is Charlie Brown Squares in December.

The September classes have started; and we had a great turnout!! Approx 20 new dancers. The last open date was Sept 19th. An enthusiastic group of younger dancers, mixed in with all ages!! What fun! Our only dance in September, featured the duo of Phil Ramey & Sarge Glidewell; not a big turnout - but lots of fun! We were dark for Circle N Square birthday dance featuring Eric Henerlau & Rikki Lobato - and I am sure it was a great time!!! We also attended the Rogue Valley Rendezvous with a great group of callers & national cuer!! What a great weekend all-around!!

We, again, only have 1 Saturday dance in October; as we will be going dark the 3rd Saturday in support of the Potato Festival in Klamath Falls. Our October 5th dance will be Mainstream/Plus with Chuck Simpkins & Sarge Glidewell. This is our "Happiness Is A Warm Puppy" dance; and it will kick off Coats For Kids donations and we are also asking for donations for Rogue Valley Human Society.

November & December dances are a full schedule -with special guest callers J Domis, Mike Sikorsky, Mike Haworth & Richard Lane - what a line-up to end the year!!!

Don't forget to get your Boatnik Ribbons; preregistering gets you a discount. Flyers have been printed & are being distributed!!

Greetings from Yreka.

I want to send thoughts, prayers and well wishes to Annie, Roger and Don and hope you will too. They have all been with our club for a very long time but health issues are preventing them from dancing much. They are certainly missed.

We have 2 squares on Monday nights. Some of which, are returning dancers wanting to get back into dancing. The returning dancers are guiding new dancers along, we hope all will stay with us for a very long time and help us build our membership back up.

October begins a new dance year for us. We have started planning dance themes and programs. As we start off a new year we are also making some changes. We hope most of you know by now we no longer dance at Greenhorn Grange, it looks like Evergreen Elementary School will be our new venue. In an effort to attract dancers to our party nights, and an attempt to conflict less with other clubs, starting in October and continuing until further notice we will now be dancing on 3RD FRIDAY NIGHTS. At this time the only month we will NOT dance on FRIDAY NIGHT will be November. Look for fliers and more info. about our dances. Also as we start our new dance year we are looking for a Round Dance Cuer. We believe our party nights are not complete with out one. So if there is a cuer, experienced or otherwise, please feel free to contact us. We are open to ANY one who might be interested in cueing. Round or Line dances or a combination of both would be OK, but we lean toward Rounds. Thank you for supporting our club. Hope to see you on the floor. Dean

Diamond Lake Festival is really in the record books this time. The weather was good and not too many mosquitoes; at least as long as there was a breeze blowing. We are all looking forward to Diamond Lake Festival in 2020. We will have a real "TRIFECTA" and a bonus of three callers of National Status. We will have Mike Sikorsky, Michael Kellogg & Mike Haworth, with a bonus of Rikki Lobato as featured cuer.

The next "Game Night" will tentatively be October 11, with a theme of "Mexican" to celebrate the game most of us play. It is a "Hoot." If you don't play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on. We are open to most any table game.

The Stars "Club Picnic" was on September 8. Wayne & Debbi extended an invitation to all for the use of their home for the event. Thank you, Wayne & Debbi! Phil cooked some awesome burgers & hot dogs.

Phil Ramey started a new "Plus" class on Monday, September 9th from 630-830pm. There were two squares turned out to either learn plus or brush up. Everyone had a great time.

Classes started on Thursday, September 12. There were 10 new students the first night with a couple of "reboots." There is also the promise of more new ones to come. Remember - The 1st 5 lessons are "Free."

Last summer the weather was blistering hot and the club was forced to cancel some dances and many lessons. This year we decided to be ahead of the weather and go dark for July and August. The result of this decision was that the club was able to visit other clubs, get some of our banners back and take some banners. It also allowed the club to plan get-to-gathers before visiting other clubs and enjoy each others company. We also had a lady's day get together and a club picnic. Lessons continued to be held and new dancers came at the beginning of each month. All in all a very productive summer.

October will be another hit and miss month. By that we will be dancing at the Hazel Dell Grange on the 12th with Mark Wheeler calling and Julie Stiers cueing. We will be calling this our Halloween Dance so put on something goofy as we all will have fun. The fourth Saturday (October 26th) is the same weekend as the Seaside Sashay. As in the past we will have a large club group in Seaside and there will be NO DANCE at the Grange.

Did you know square dancing has been our "Official National Folk Dance" since President Reagan signed an act of Congress in 1982.

October makes you think of pumpkins and that leads to considering how you will celebrate Halloween. Did you hear about the idea of moving Halloween to a Friday earlier in the month so it would not be so dark for the Trick or Treaters? Maybe it would be better to stay on Daylight Saving Time all year instead of switching to Standard Time.

The Eager Beavers annual picnic is a low key affair except for one thing - food. We do like the pot luck system of multiple delicious offerings. After eating we mostly sat in our foldable chairs occasionally stirring our bones to pitch bean bags at a large board with holes in it and marked 1, 2, 3, HR, and OUT. After a big meal this is the best way to play baseball. Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro is a lovely place for a picnic which is why we return year after year.

We attended the TVC fifth Saturday dance on August 31st with Daryl Clendenin calling and Connie Clark cueing. It was a little on the warm and humid side but we all had a good time. Thanks to the Valley Squares for co-hosting the event with the TVC. It is the policy of the Eager Beavers to visit all of the anniversary dances for TVC clubs. At this writing we plan to attend as many of the club anniversaries dances as possible.

New Year’s Dance has a color theme in case you needed an excuse for a new outfit: black, red, silver. We and the Sunset Promenaders are hosting this dance with some help from the TVC. When you are planning for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas do not forget to include a night of great dancing to welcome in the New Year.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Hoedowners - Link
Just because Hoedowners love bling and a chance to dress up we had our Roaring Twenties Dance on August 10th. There were several great costumes, guys in suspenders, black shirts, spats and hats. While the ladies were flappers with fringe, sequins, boas, headbands, and long beads. It was a Gatsby gala evening with Randy Dibble on the microphone putting us through our paces. Randy Lewis cued the dance. We had guests from Tri-Squares, Sunset Promenaders, Valley Squares, Happy Hoppers, Toe Draggers and Oak Hills Prairie Stompers.

On the 24th we had our Summers End Dance. Boy I hate even typing those words. Ken Pratt cued the dance for us. We want to thank the 27 guests who joined us on the floor. We adjourned to the dining room and enjoyed the fruits of the summer.

We will be holding a Sock Hop dance; a blast from the 50’s and 60’s on October 12th.

On October 26 we’ll be dark as we head west, toward the setting sun and the Seaside Sashay. The convention center in Seaside has had a major remodel the Hoedowners will be there to break it in.

With summer on its way out, we look forward to our regular schedule again. That includes our delayed Root Beer Float Dance September 21st.

Big news is that October 19th is our 35th Birthday Dance! At 7:00 Randy Dibble will call half an hour of plus, followed by Sherri Clark cuing half an hour of round dancing. After dancing mainstream from 8:00 to 10:00 we will head downstairs for chocolate cake (probably decorated with M&Ms by Dan Knierim) and ice cream. Lindie might even have some more ideas for this special evening.

Our mailing address in the TVC Directory is correct (2085 153rd), but we dance at the community gym, which is located two blocks north of that address (2400 NW 153rd and Oak Hills Dr.). Sorry for any confusion this might have caused.

On August 19th, we graduated six new dancers from our new-dancers’ class. Fun, silly dancing, and games were followed by snacks and celebration.

We welcome Renee Ruud as our caller for the third and fifth Mondays beginning on September 30th.

Come visit TVC’s newest club on any Monday evening. Square dance attire is optional. On the first Monday of the month square dance attire is encouraged, and the dance will be all singing calls.

Thanks,

Marie Clem

Although we are a Washington club we are also a member of the Oregon Federation. We have recently changed our Council affiliation in Washington from the Sou'wester Council to the Evergreen Council, a little closer to home and our regular dancers.

R Square D had a fun dancing summer. We have been pleased with our air conditioning, having mostly 4 squares on the floor at each of our dances during the summer. We are back to regular dance times as of September. REMEMBER Second Friday, Fourth Saturday, till next June.

Our OCTOBERFEST weekend is here! October 11th and 12th at Rose Valley Grange. Please see the flyer for all the particulars.

Plus Workshop will begin on October 23rd, Wednesday evenings 7-9. Learn or enhance your Plus skills. See flyer or our website for details.

It’s not too late to get all your friends who have been yearning to learn how to square dance, to our lessons. Starting Wednesday September 18th from 7:00-9:00pm, and then again on Saturday September 21st from 10:00-12:00 noon. We’ll keep these times open for at least 2 weeks, so come on out!

Oct. 4th is a regular dance for us.

Sunday, October 6th from 1:30-4:30 is our annual Pink dance. This very special dance is one not to be missed! We will again have baskets to raffle filled with all sorts of goodies. We will also be raffling off the beautiful quilt the Toe’s have put together. Best of all, all the proceeds from EVERYTHING go to cancer research!

Toe’s will be dark on Oct. 18th, as the Brookhaven Bazaar takes over our hall, and the Toe’s will be having a mystery trip.

Tri Squares - Link
The summer heat kept our club dark for August but we visited both the Sunset Promenaders and the Hoedowners and had a great time. In between we held a “dance-demo” at the Tigard Library on a Saturday afternoon. The library publicized the event on line, and 22 people attended, expressing interest in our upcoming lessons. Also 21 of our 27 Tri Squares members showed up to angel and make it fun!

The final Sunday we had our traditional annual summer’s end potluck picnic on the shady hill at Snyder Park in Sherwood. We enjoyed the wonderful music from the acoustic guitar of Charles McAuley and the accordion of Adolph Eppich.

In October we’ll be busy with lessons in Mainstream and Two-Step and go visit Mix ‘n Mingle for their 35th anniversary dance.

NOTE: We will begin OUR NEW DANCE SCHEDULE on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month.

Come join us on Friday October 11th for our “Fall Fling” and then on Friday October 25th for “Come As You Aren’t”, which is our Halloween dance. Both dances with our caller, Terry Halley and our cuer, Sandra Pinion.

We also are having a New Dancer Jamboree on Sunday October 20th, class level up to B-30, from 3:30 to 5:30.

See you on Fridays from now on!

Both of our scheduled dances in August were cancelled. The first one was because only five people showed up, and the second was because it was 97 degrees that night. The Winona Grange's air conditioning does not work that well with outside temperatures that high.

Our next scheduled dances are on October 9th and October 23rd.

Our club continues to be a fun place where friends gather, have some food and practice moves they want to work on before the weekend dances. Lots of belly laughs to go around. We would love to have you come join us!

See you around in a square....

Valley River Dancers - Link
The Valley River Dancers dance Plus on 2nd Fridays, and Mainstream on 4th Fridays in Newberg at the Chehalem Community Center, located on the corner of 2nd and Howard Streets. We dance ‘A’ on 5th Saturdays at the Woodburn Senior Estates Community Club. Randy Dibble is our Caller. Ken Pratt cues 2nd Friday; Sherri Clark cues 4th Friday. https://www.valleyriverdancers.org

A round dance workshop continues preceding our 2nd Friday dance, led by Ken and Dianne Pratt, beginning at 6:30 pm. Come work on your round dancing moves with us.

Our Mainstream September 27th dance will feature a black light, so come glow in the dark and have some Friday evening fun dancing with us. There are no themes planned for our October dances. Square dancers are invited to Abby's Pizza in Newberg after our dances to enjoy complimentary sodas.

Mainstream lessons begin officially on Tuesday, September 10th 6:30-8 p.m. at the Chehalem Community Center. Cost is $68 for the 12-week course taught by Randy Dibble. An ‘A’ workshop continues immediately following from 8-9:30 p.m. Cost $6.

Valley Squares August 17th dance was lots of fun even if we had only 6 couples. Because we were all Plus dancers, we danced Plus for the whole evening. We did a 6 couple tip which was extremely fun. Scott Zinser was our caller, Connie Clark our cuer. Scott and Connie kept us moving and having fun.

Our October 19th dance theme is "Spooky Dance", dress up, it adds to the fun! Craig Abercrombie calling, Connie Clark cueing. Our dance format is 7-8:30 pm MS or floor level, 8:30-9:30 pm Plus (or, if everyone attending is Plus we dance Plus the entire evening). Sometimes we go past 9:30 pm depending upon what our dancers want to do, we work together to have a fun evening.

We hope more dancers come to our dances to support Valley Squares. If not, we may have to close down our dance in a few months. I know most clubs are shrinking, square dancing is diminishing. We all need to work together to keep square dancing alive, to bring in new dancers, fill our class floor with new students, keep our clubs alive and having so much fun. A full dance floor is so much fun for the dancers as well as the caller and cuer.

Thanks for reading this,

Carolene Siebert

The heat has finally begun to subside, and fall is beginning to show its beautiful colors here in the Umpqua Valley.

Our first dance of the month was our Back To School Dance. We had our new club caller Mark Wheeler on the stage, and Neil Koozer cued for the round dancers. We had a nice turnout and everyone had a great time! Mark brings lots of energy to the barn!

Our second dance was our Welcome Fall Dance. It is always fun to dance to a fall themed dance when the fall has brought cooler weather and rain. Mark Wheeler called the squares and Neil Koozer cued the rounds.

The Buckeroos began a new set of lessons this month. We had a good number of students show up and are excited to see the energy in the group. We are already looking forward to dancing with them at Mid-Winter! Speaking of Mid-Winter, we will have Buckeroo Round-Up ribbons for sale, so do not forget to find us and get yours!

Remember… we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
