Oregon Federation News
December 2019

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 December 2019
President's Corner

Happy Holidays to everyone! As we head into the holidays we are also entering into our new dancer dance season. Make sure you are encouraging your students to attend these dances at their level AND YOU ARE GOING WITH THEM! They need to know that there will be someone they already know at the dance. Offer to give a ride or meet them there.

Before letting your students or newer dancers go off to a dance, please consider going over some common etiquette for square dancers. Make sure you give them a chance to ask questions ahead of time on what they may experience.

Square dancers pride themselves on being friendly, courteous and honest on and off the dance floor. Following is a few items to remember when attending a square dance:

For those of you who attend Mid-Winter Festival each year, please make sure that the newer dancers and students in your club/classes are aware of the festival and that there are halls where they can dance at their level. This is a great opportunity to meet others from around the state, out of state or even another country!

Karyn Buchheit

Editor's Note

After our nice and dry November, I have to wonder if the other shoe is going to drop in the form of a dreaded snowfall this winter. Hang on tight.

I hope your holiday season is a warm and happy one.

We held 3 dances in the month of October. The second dance featured Kris Jensen from Albuquerque who made a quick diversion through town to call for us and Spin Cycle Squares. We love dancing to her smooth calling.

When we do not have a live caller, we dance to recorded tips by national callers. We have changed our dance times and are now dancing 2-4PM on the Sundays we dance. We generally dance two squares on the floor in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center with its cushioned wood floors. The speakers in Hall B are excellent and hearing enhancement is available. If you are in the area or passing through, please check our website (cas-sq.yolasite.com) to see if we are dancing. We may cancel if there are not enough dancers planning on attending any given dance. You may also call (541) 741-4149 to check.

We have also been offering C1 lessons on the days before our advanced dances from 1-2PM Sundays, or in Junction City on the alternate Sundays. If you want to brush up on your C1, please come join us.

In October we had two really fun dances on our regular dance nights 2nd and 4th Fridays. They were about equally attended with three squares on the floor most of the time. As with many clubs we are seeing the numbers dwindle. Again the new dance format seems to be working out okay with many ands staying to clean up after 10 and the announcements are over. Still there are some who need to leave early or don’t stay for announcements.

Jim Hattrick called our regular dance Oct. 11 with Jackie Gale cueing. George Hermann called our Halloween dance on Oct. 25 with Jackie Gale cueing. We are so delighted with the callers and our cuer who do such a great job of calling and cueing and keeping our dancers happy. Our Halloween dance as always had some fun costumes (see photos in the photo section).

In December we will hold our annual Christmas potluck dinner and dance with dinner at 6:30 and dancing commencing at 7:30 as usual. The club provides the ham and rolls; dancers provide the rest. It is always a tasty meal and fitting for the holiday season in our beautifully decorated hall. Please come join us for the dinner, the dance or both. Jim Hattrick will call and Jackie Gale will cue that dance on Dec. 13. Our Dec. 27 dance will feature K.C. Curtis and Jackie Gale.

P.S. If you are reading this on or before Nov 22 please come join us for our Western Hoedown and Chili feed with Darrell Kalmbach and Jackie Gale. This should be a fun one and we are not back to back with Thanksgiving—still dancing can burn off calories!

We dance almost every Sunday at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. 5:30 - 8:00. We dance all levels. Our caller, Tim Matteson, will adjust the levels according to who shows up to dance. It's always FUN, and we always have a lot of FOOD! We encourage all square dancers to join us! The floor is cushioned and socomfortable to dance on! We even have heat and air conditioning!

Please call Tim at 541-988-0399 or David at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We are dark once in a blue moon, but we'd hate to miss you.

We were dark November 24, a Sunday, because the annual special dance with Kris Jensen was held the day before, a Saturday. Wow! What a dance, potluck and silent auction! Whew!

Keep on dancing,

We are quite excited about our beginning clogging group. They continue to be quite consistent every week and are doing very well. They will graduate just before Christmas. We are excited to see our numbers growing in our intermediate class as well. We usually see 10-15 cloggers come consistently every week.

We have just completed our election of officers and they will take their new positions on January 1, 2020. Mary Ellen Ramsayer will remain as our president; our new Vice President will be Rolita LaForge, Secretary Pam Seacrest, Treasurer Miranda Mann and Area Representative Cathy Drawson.

We are also very excited about receiving an invitation to dance at Magic at the Mill on Friday December 20 from 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. This is a part of the Christmas extravaganza at Mission Mill. We have not done this before, so we are all looking forward to being a part of it. Georganne

Hello! I can’t believe it is time for the December issue. I would like to invite everyone to our Pie Night this month on Monday December 30 at “The Estates” auditorium in Woodburn.

Golden Squares is a tiny club of five dancers of which one is a snowbird! We manage alright but we need help with attendance. We have an excellent dance floor. Randy Dibble is our caller and Julie Stiers is our cuer on the first and fifth Mondays and Sherry Clark cues on the third Monday.

Thank you to everyone who came to last Pie Night and the Crew Dance. We had a lot of fun. Hope to see you in a square soon. Merry Christmas. Teija

We are more and more excited about our new class of Mainstream students! Their energy, enthusiasm, positive attitude, and progress in dancing make our Sunday evening lessons a real delight. George Hermann, instructor and club caller, is challenging them with three to four new calls per week, and they are eating it up – learning the moves and beginning to dance with style. We have 25 students and wonderful angel participation by our club members. The Salem Hospital venue is ideal, and we greatly appreciate the opportunity to offer our lessons there. Continued kudos to Membership Coordinators Dave O’Neill and Lee Ashwill!

The proceeds from our Christmas Dance silent auction will support Windsor House, homes for brain injured adults, and we are collecting cans of decaf coffee for the Windsor House kitchens – our annual December service project.

Come dance with us on the first and second Saturdays of each month at the Polk County Fairgrounds. Especially be sure that you mark your calendars for our special dances: December 14 Christmas Dance with Silent Auction and visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus; February 8 “Mix it up” Dance; March 8 (Sunday) IWW 60th Birthday Dance.

Looking ahead: Mystery trip (date to be determined); Salvation Army bell ringing December 9 – 12 (at Macy’s); Annual Koast Krash April 24 – 26 (Yachats Inn. Theme: At the Hop). Dee Mackaman

Happy Fall to our dancing friends. Hopefully you will enjoy your Thanksgiving meal next week and the Christmas holidays to follow.

Our club has voted to go dark on December 26 to enjoy more time with family wherever they may be. The OFN has been changed to show we are not dancing that night.

A rhythm has been picked for our Showcase for Mid-Winter and we have been working on learning whatever moves we are not comfortable with so we look good for the audience.

We have completed the phase 3 & 4 moves in Rumba and will continue to review as time goes by. We will be deciding on what comes next soon.

We played for the Halloween dance event. Stephanie Lozano had some related music and we danced them for something different to do. Goodies were brought and we had a good time. We are hoping that by the time this goes to print that Stephanie loses the boot on her foot. She sprained her ankle at Seaside Sashay and it is taking time for it to heal again. We need to wrap her in bubble wrap to keep her healthy. Happy, healthy holidays to all of you. Marilyn Schmit

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Ham Dinner Dance in November. We had a great meal and then enjoyed dancing to Leonard and Frances.

Thomas graduated his students from his summer class and we are doing our best to make sure they get out to the new dancer dances as well as helping to angel our current class. Watch for our flyers for our new dancer dance in January. It is also our Baked Potato dinner!

We are planning to have two squares go to competition this year in Auburn, Washington. Soooooo... we are doing visitations (and showing off our current trophies), selling festival pins and we will have the raffle tickets available soon. Since we are traveling this year, we do have to raise more funds. Please plan to join us for our fundraiser dance on March 22. Watch for more information to come. See you at a dance soon. Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares celebrated its birthday dance with a Halloween themed dance. Dancers were encouraged to come in costume, which the majority did and that added to the fun! Throughout the Square Dance Center were spiders, skeletons, and pumpkins aglow with flickering light. Of course, there was an abundance of candy corn at every table. Shari’s deviled eggs topped with black olive spiders were a hit as well as the punch bowl with an icy hand floating in it. The dance was lively and spooktacular! We were pleased with the turnout and thank everyone involved for helping us celebrate our birthday.

We are looking forward to our new dancer dance on Sunday, Dec. 1, which will be an afternoon dance. It will include a sizable used clothing sale so be expecting some bargains. See you in a square! Jodee Howard

Good things are coming up this month. National caller Kris Jensen will be with us Nov 27, with Tami Helms cueing. We’ll have a New Dancer Jamboree on our regular dance night Dec 11. It will also give new dancers a sample of round dancing by our club cuer, Tami Helms. Our basket raffle will be Dec 18, with Craig Abercrombie calling and Tami Helms cueing.

Bonus night will be Dec 27 featuring our New Dancer workshop and reviews. We don’t normally dance on a Friday night, so this will be a night to experience.

Our president and taw represented us at the Indio dance festival. Several Cut-Ups also came. 100 squares were in attendance.

We’ve heard that former member Benjamin Brown passed away in November.

Happy Hoppers - Link
Wow! About four squares of Hoppers had a terrific time dancing and renewing acquaintances with square dance friends at the Seaside Sashay. Although it may have been hard to count all of our members since many of them have dual club memberships and do not always wear their Hopper badges, we were there in force having a great time. The weekend was made possible by the wonderful people who volunteer their time and talents to make this event happen. We owe them all a huge “Thank you!” The callers, Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman, and the cuer, Debbie Taylor, were the frosting on the cake making the Seaside Sashay truly memorable. Next up on our horizon is the Mid-Winter Festival.

At our December 7th dance we will still be collecting gifts for children being served by the Children’s Center, a non-profit organization that provides mental health care to children of low-income families. For the past several years we have collected toys for the Children’s Center at the last dance in November and at the first dance in December. The generosity of our square-dancing members and guests has made a difference for a lot of children. Our final dance of 2019, December 21st, will be a Christmas dance with holiday music and Christmas cookies and treats for the break. It’s always one of the more colorful and fun dances of the year.

This last year and a half has been a time of transition and trying new ideas for the Hoppers. We are now confident and comfortable in our new home and looking forward to another wonderful year of dancing and sharing memories with friends and fellow dancers. We’re wishing all our square-dancing friends and families a joyous holiday season and a wonderful 2020.

In October, we added two new speakers to the back of our hall, so we now have “Surround Sound”. Come dance with us and enjoy the great sound.

Our students are progressing well in their lessons, and at our first dance in November (November 9) we honored them and other new dancers with a new dancer Jamboree and a “lightly used” clothing sale. The wonderful volunteers from the “Quilts of Valor “were also there to help us honor and thank some of our military veterans on Veterans day week, with the presentation a handmade quilt to each of them.

Our first dance in December will be a holiday theme dance followed by a regular dance the next week. We will also be having our annual holiday dinner that month. We dance every second and third Saturday at Milwaukie Community Center at 43nd and Jackson. Come join us.

The Ramblers were thrilled to receive a visitation from the Oaky Doaks at our November 9 dance, with Diana Wedel from Seattle calling. It was so much fun to dance with new and old friends, and the Oaky Doaks brought lots of energy and enthusiasm to the dance. We are already planning a visit back to the ODs to reciprocate—probably next spring!

The Oaky Doaks were the second club to earn a Ramblers banner with a visitation in 2019. The first person who correctly names the other club that received a Ramblers visitation banner in 2019 will receive one free admission to a Ramblers monthly dance of their choice. Email your response to info@rosetownramblers.com

Our upcoming dances (all at Oak Grove Community Center) are:

We’ll be starting a new series of Mainstream lessons in January at Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland. We welcome all dancers.

Greetings from Yreka. It has been very busy in our small corner of the world the past few weeks. Sherrie and I attended Harvest Hoedown in Yuba City and had a terrific time! I want to stop any possible rumors that may have been started. We (CnS ) are NOT folding. We sent in dues to the Federation for 17 members. You may, or will have heard things, and it will be up to you to decide what to believe. We held a special general membership meeting on Nov. 7th. There were several people who volunteered to fill vacated positions on our board of directors, and vacated officer positions. We will hold another meeting in Dec. to make theses nominations official. At this point in time we will not be holding any club party nights until after the first of the year. We hope to continue to have our dances at Evergreen Elementary School. Elaine has agreed to cue rounds for us. We hope to continue to offer Advanced, M/S and Plus to those attending. As well as Rounds. As long as the weather is good.

Sherrie and I are holding and sponsoring new dancer classes at the Karuk Wellness Center. We have filed the necessary paper work with the Karuk tribe. We have 8 new dancers and 5 returning dancers. We are doing a lot of 6 couple, and Cecillian Circle. We are planning on having our annual Christmas party ornament exchange and dance on Dec 23. This will be student level, and held at the Wellness Center.

Don’t forget the chart-topping event in July at Diamond Lake. We will have a real “TRIFECTA” and a bonus with 3 callers of National Status. We will have Mike Sikorsky, Michael Kellogg and Mike Haworth with the bonus of Rikki Lobato as the featured cuer.

The “Game Night” held on November 8th was well attended. As usual, everyone ate too much, but had a good time nonetheless. Come out and join us on January 3rd for the next one. The theme will be “Cold Weather Comfort Food.” It is a “Hoot.” If you don’t play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on; and we are open to most any table game.

Classes are going good and the students are really enthusiastic.

On November 15th, there was another “Back to Basics” dance. Dean Black was the caller. All who attended had a great time.

On November 21st, the Stars Class will host their Annual Thanksgiving Potluck. Then on November 23rd will be the club Thanksgiving dance. December 19th is the Stars’ Class Christmas Potluck. Besides the free Potluck Dinner, there will be a White Elephant Gift Exchange. Of course, there is always dancing around the Christmas Tree.

Council clubs are encouraging their dancers to attend the anniversary dances of member clubs and the effort seems to be working. On October 5th the Sunset Promenaders celebrated their 34th Anniversary with a full house. The anniversary dance featured callers Mike Stout and Darrell Kalmbach with Ken Pratt and Julie Stout cueing to 134 dancers. The Hoedowners were awarded a banner for having over two squares in attendance.

A report from the Mix 'N Mingle indicated a well attended 35th anniversary dance with Randy Dibble calling and guest cuer Sherri Clark on the 19th of October.

The annual Seaside Sashay on October 25th and 26th hosted by two TVC clubs, Hayshakers and Sunset Promenaders, was a big success. This dance featured Craig Ambercrombie and Adam Christman calling and Debbie Taylor cueing to a record 247 dancers.

The next Council event in December will be our annual New Years Eve dance at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall. Darrell Kalmbach and Sherri Clark will be calling and cueing the dance which will begin at 8:45 with pre-plus. The dance will continue with Mainstream at 9:00 until 12:15 with every third tip plus. See flyer below.

Since the OFN is published around the 20th of November, you may still have time to plan on the TVC fifth Saturday Dance, held at the Aloha Grange on November 30th. This dance will feature Mike and Julie Stout calling and cueing. The dance begins with pre-rounds at 7:30 followed by Mainstream with rounds at 8:00. Every third tip will be Plus. This dance is co-hosted by our brand new club to the TVC, the Oak Hills Squares.

Well, the Seaside Sashay was well attended by members of the Columbia River Dancers. We had a great time dancing and enjoyed our annual pizza feed on Saturday. A nice thing about the Sashay is we get to dance with friends from near and far. Danced with a couple from Bend and one from Spokane.

Our December dances will feature Mike and Julie Stout on December 14th and our own Jim Hattrick on the 28th.

We will be sponsoring a New Year’s Eve dance for Adam Christman, Jim Hattrick, and Craig Abercrombie (also know as the Front Porch Trio) at the Hazel Dell Grange. Jim will do pre-rounds from 8:30 until 9:00 and mainstream with plus added from 9 to midnight.

Our promise is that everyone gets to dance. So, if you are a single please come join us.

Lastly, a special thanks to Gary and Judi Ferguson for being our club's representative to the TVC.

To all, Happy New Year. Hope to see you soon.

The comments heard about the Seaside Sashay included fun, best ever, and a great crowd. One person told me he has already reserved his same room for next year. As we all know it is not just the dancing that brings us to this event. Friendships are made. There is a rumor about the lovely lady from Washington that danced with one of our members most of the weekend. That reminds me how I met my partner of thirteen years at a square dance at the Aloha Grange in Beaverton. You should always have some adventure when you leave home.

Marie Clem was elected treasurer after Joanne Switzer resigned due to health issues. Thank you Joanne for your service and accept our heartfelt wishes for a successful outcome.

Our three callers and cuer have agreed to continue putting up with us another year. I, for one, appreciate their patience, good humor, and creative calling. This fits well with some of our creative interpretations of the calls. Maybe they are staying on because we entertain them.

'Tis the season for those fancy outfits you rarely wear, celebrate by showing them off. The New Year’s Dance is a black, red, silver color theme so find a new outfit or add some bling to a favorite one. Sunset Promenaders and Eager Beavers are hosting this dance with some help from TVC. The mainstream dance begins at 9 pm, IOOF Hall, in Hillsboro. There will be 15 minutes of Plus at 8:45 pm. When you are planning for the holidays do not forget to include a night of great dancing to welcome in the New Year.

There are 5 Mondays in December giving you plenty of opportunities to work out your holiday stress. We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. Please check for up to date information at www.EagerBeavers.info.

Hoedowners - Link
So why is October the 10th month of year when octa refers to 8; octopus, octagon, octave? It’s just one of life’s mysteries. However, October is the month of football, autumn leaves, golden sunsets, homecoming dances and the Hoedowners Sock Hop Dance which was held on the 12th. Did you ever dance in your socks for real? My memory comes up blank on that one. Wendy Peterman won the Split the pot but the Spin It to Win It went unclaimed.

Hoedowners got their hips swaying as we headed west to the 2019 Seaside Sashay. By my count we had 24 Hoedowners in attendance. The weather was good and there was dancing at the turnaround Saturday morning. Friday evening the Hoedowners met for dinner at Finns. The meal was great as usual and the laughter was abundant. Thank heavens we had time to finish dining, change our clothes and head over to the Seaside Convention Center for the last dance of the weekend. Most of the Hoedowners were outfitted in the green vests advertising Summer Festival 2020!

What lies ahead in December? On December 14th we’ll have our annual Soup Dance. The aroma is heavenly as all our great cooks create tasty, liquid offerings.

The next day, Sunday December 15th, is our New Dancer Jamboree at 1 pm. Please join us.

We will wrap up 2019 on the December 28th in our coziest loungewear for our Pajama Dance; sweats, nightgowns, robes, onesies, baby dolls, all are welcome. Teddy bears, pillows and blankies are optional.

Mix N Mingle - Link
Our 35th birthday dance was a success with lots of people dancing to our fun caller, Randy and special guest cuer, Sherri. There was cake and ice cream from Dan, jars of M&M’s to guess the count from Lindie and goodies to snack on from Rick and Robin. The grange was decorated with M&M containers (gifts from dancers), balloons and pillows made by Lindie’s mom.

Come join us, on December 21st for our annual Canned Food Dance! In our earlier days we gave people a discount for bringing canned food but soon decided to switch to a greater need - Teddy Bears for kids in crisis. Police and fire stations were happy to have the toys to pass out but eventually, with other groups joining in the collecting of stuffed animals, they had more than they could use. At that point we switched back to the Canned Food Dance. The stage was decorated with the donations and after the dance they went into the Grange's barrel for the Oregon Food Bank. Everything goes to those in need. What a great way to help others.

We’d love to see you there - - - Merry Christmas

Oak Hills Squares - Link
Oak Hills Squares are continuing lessons on Monday nights at 6:30 PM. We have several new students who are making good progress.

Renee Ruud was our caller for two dances in October while our caller, Lane Clem and Marie vacationed in sunny California.

Our Guy Fawkes Dance on Nov 4 was a great success. Dancers wore red, white and blue, which happen to be England’s colors as well as the good ole’ US. Guy Fawkes is a notorious English renegade, whose capture and execution is celebrated on November 5th with fireworks and wearing of masks. Since we have British members, we felt it a good alternative to the typical Halloween theme. So many interesting British refreshments; English flapjacks are NOT like American pancakes! Guy was there is effigy, asking for pennies, and fireworks were lit outside after the dance.

We hope to see a lot of ugly sweaters at our theme dance on December 2nd, where refreshments will be available during open break.

Please join TVC’s newest club on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30. The first hour will be the lesson for new dancers (we always welcome angels), and mainstream dancing with phase two rounds will follow for the second hour. Square dancing attire is encouraged, but optional on the first Monday of every month, when the dance is all singing calls.

Let’s keep on dancing!

Marie Clem

October.... Only 1 dance, but oh, what a dance! Dances would be more correct. Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th was the weekend for our Octoberfest celebration. Friday night is when most of the out-of-towners get settled in for the weekend. We begin at our usual 2nd Friday time. Yummy dessert bars are the treat for afterdance. Those who are ready Saturday morning start with a caravan of bargain shoppers that do the garage sale circuit. A warm soup lunch awaits their return. More dancing in the afternoon, Rounds with Susan, and Plus with Adam and Craig.

Saturday evening is the German meal. Many thanks for those cooks and helpers who worked through the afternoon to provide this meal!! The River City Riders start the evening with a tip with horses (!) yes, horses. Each year they have been trained with new moves. It is a tradition, so if you haven't seen them, join us next year.

The fun is not only on the floor but on stage. Susan, Craig and Adam are good entertainment, the fun they have spills out to the dance floor. There again a tradition, join us next year and you will see. We finish on Saturday night with pie and coffee. It is a warm send off for our friends who have joined us and made our Octoberfest a success again. Our venue will change next year to Catlin Grange in Kelso. It will still be the second weekend in October so you can plan ahead for next year's calendar. (Wink, wink)

December 13th is our toy dance, it is called this because we donate toys to kids whose families have limited resources. If you bring toys, we also collect the receipts for the purchase of the toys in order to satisfy tax requirements. Thank you. We will be dark on our December 4th Saturday dance so, will see you next year, 2020!

Dance info: 7pm - 8pm Plus with advanced rounds, 8pm - 9:30pm Mainstream with rounds. 106 NW 8th Ave, Kelso, WA 98626 by the Rotary spray park at the intersection of Hwy 4 and W Main, Kelso/Longview. Our dances are $6 donation.

We know December is a busy month but we hope to see you in a square and have the opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas.

Our "Man Enough to Wear Pink" dance on October 6th was a great success. We raised $2,300.00 for OHSU Knight Cancer Institute for Cancer Research. Thank you for supporting this dance.

The Toes went dark on the 3rd Friday of October and adventured off on a mystery trip. We ended up at the Hayshakers to dance, and stayed at an Astoria Bed and Breakfast. It was great fun.

Toe Draggers New Dancer Jamboree will be on the first Friday, December 6th during our regular dance time. K.C. Curtis is the caller and Bev Flint will be cueing. Bring your students and come join us! Kinton Grange, 19015 SW Scholls Ferry Rd - 7:30 pre-rounds, 8:00 class level with easy rounds.

Then on the December 20th third Friday we are back to our normal format, Mainstream with one plus level tip at mid-dance. The theme for this dance is Winter Wonderland.

Our canned food drive is continuing. Please bring non-perishable food to the dance for donation to the Grange's food baskets. Thank you.

Wishing all of you a Happy Holiday season.

Tri Squares - Link
In October Tri Squares went full speed ahead with Two Step (2 pm) and Mainstream (3:30) lessons on Sunday afternoons at the Grange. Plus we visited Mix ‘N Mingle for their 35th anniversary, and some of us attended the Seaside Sashay while others held our Halloween dance, “Come As You Aren’t”.

On December the 8th we’re having our annual holiday party and dinner-out, including the white elephant gift exchange for some good laughs! Our lessons are suspended in December but we’re having two dances; “Sounds of the Seasons” Christmas dance on Friday the 13th, and “Winter Wonderland” black and white ball on Friday the 27th, with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion.

Happy holidays to everyone!

A round dance workshop continues preceding our 2nd Friday Plus Dance, led by Ken and Dianne Pratt, beginning at 6:30 pm. Bring your round dance questions to the pros and allow them to help you smooth out your dance figures.

Our mainstream lessons are continuing under Randy’s superb guidance. Our four students are making great progress. Our New Dancer / Christmas Dance will be the 4th Friday, December 27th. Although this dance will be at Mainstream level, Randy will call to the floor level to accommodate new dancers. Traditionally we play a game involving a gift exchange, and so we encourage dancers to bring a wrapped gift of no more than $5 to exchange.

Complimentary sodas are offered to square dancers after our dances at Abby’s Legendary Pizza in Newberg.

We wish everyone happy and safe holidays, and really hope to see you in a square soon!

Our October "Spooky Dance" was lots of fun, most of our members dressed up in costume. We had quit a few visitors. The dance was mostly at Mainstream level with a Plus tip at the end as most of our visitors were at Mainstream level. We take a consensus of the dancers toward 8:30 pm to see what level they want, that way everyone can dance.

Valley Squares is going DARK for December as our dance is so close to Christmas. We will be DARK for January as well. We will start our dances up again on Saturday, February 15th, 7 pm and will start our classes on Tuesday's in February 2020 with Feb 4th & 11th lessons free, 7-9 pm. All at the Aloha Grange.

Fall has officially arrived here in the Umpqua Valley. The leaves are turning bright colors and the air is crisp and cool. Another clue that fall is upon us is the beginning of a new cycle of mainstream classes here at the Buckeroo Barn. Mainstream classes are now closed, and we are helping prepare our students for their first “big dance” at Mid-Winter.

We are gearing up for our annual wreath sale. This is our largest fundraiser of the year. Our members make beautiful wreaths to decorate your door over the holiday season. We are trying to be creative and add a few more opportunities to raise money to support the barn. In December, we will have our Holiday Craft Bazaar, so watch our website for details. There will be gift wrapping, visits with Santa, and concessions on hand during the event. Plan to come shop, or if you are a crafter, contact us to rent a table. All proceeds from fundraising helps pay our taxes, insurance, repairs, and general upkeep of the barn.

See you in a square,

Robin P. Faltersack
