Oregon Federation News
May 2020

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 May 2020
Editor's Note

This will probably be the saddest issue of the OFN yet. No one was able to dance in April, and no one is clear about what will happen in May. Stay healthy, and we'll get back to normal sooner or later.

Be sure to check on your club members once in a while. Since we're not seeing everyone regularly, it can get very lonely.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Coronavirus Update

Most of our square dance organizations are canceling dances, classes, meetings, and special events in response to the rapid spread of the coronavirus. We've compiled a list of the cancelations we know about on the Federation's web page here.

Federation Meetings

The next Federation meeting, scheduled for Klamath Falls, on April 26, 2020, has been postponed until May 17. If the coronavirus limitations have not been listed by then, the meeting will be held as a videoconference.

Summer Festival

Sadly, the 2020 Summer Festival, which was to be held at the Seaside Convention Center in Seaside on August 21-23, 2020, had to be canceled, due to the governor's orders on large gatherings.

Mid-Winter

Oregon's Mid-Winter Festival 2020 will be held January 22, 23 and 24, 2021, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Youth Scholarship

The OFSRDC Youth Activity Coordinator is accepting applications for this year’s OFSRDC Scholarship. There are two $500 scholarships available to graduating high school seniors or college freshmen. The completed applications are due in to the Youth Coordinator by May 1, 2020. Rules and applications are available on the Federation website or by clicking here or by contacting Thomas Buchheit at buchheitfarmkm@gmail.com If you know a square dancing youth who might be eligible, please encourage them to check this out.

Thomas Buchheit
OFSRDC Youth Activity Coordinator

Other National Events

The 73rd Silver State Festival in Sparks, NV, scheduled for May 8 to 10, has been canceled.

The 69th National Square Dance Convention® in nearby Spokane, Washington, has been canceled. Refunds will be issued.

The 70th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Jackson, Mississippi, June 23-26, 2021.

Corporation Renewal Status

All clubs in the Oregon Federation are required to maintain their status as non-profit corporations with the State of Oregon. The Secretary of State's office mails out a renewal notice about a month before your registration expires every year. The following clubs expire this month:

May 3 -- Country Cut-Ups
May 6 -- Whirl-A-Ways
May 8 -- Timber 8's
May 15 -- Bachelor N Bachelorettes
May 15 -- River City Dancers
May 26 -- South Coast Council

We did have a Fifth Saturday Dance February 29 just before the coronavirus business hit us all hard.

We are supposed to have our annual Emerald Area benefit dance May 30, but time will tell if that happens. Our beneficiary this year is Food for Lane County.

Our hall in Springfield was closed around March 9 and will remain closed until further notice.

We trust everyone is doing what they can to be safe and that everyone is well and healthy.

Wishing you all good health,

Christina Corelli, Secretary

We have had no dances in March due to the coronavirus pandemic and the governor’s banning social gatherings of more than 10 and the social distancing rules going into effect... We all can’t wait to get back to dancing as soon as this crisis is resolved.

Stay safe wherever you are sheltering in place.

We did not hold a dance in the month of March. Our Friday evening dance March 14 was to have an Irish theme and we were all eager to get a taste of the baked potato bar to be held before the dance at 7PM. Alas, all the preparations went for naught when we got the word to cancel on Mar. 13. We hope we did not catch anyone unaware as we tried to get the word out to our members and fellow dancers.

We have small hope of having a dance in May. That dance would have been the Mexican Fiesta dance we put on with the help of the Whirl-A-Ways. These combined dances have been held annually for about 5 years now and are always a great success, rivaling only our birthday dance in February. Perhaps by June we will be able to have dances once again but one cannot predict at this point when this virus will wear itself out.

Single Trees has made some very huge changes that will take effect starting in September. We will stop holding dances twice monthly and drop to only the 4th Friday. Because so many holidays fall on the 4th Friday weekends along with Mid-Winter Festival we will only have 9 dances in the coming dance year. We hope to retain Jim Hattrick along with other guest callers to offer some good dancing on the 4th Friday of every month except December, January and May. Our door fees were raised to $6 this past dance year. Our dues will go up to $20 starting in September. We are hoping to stay viable for several years to come. We’ll see.

Best wish to all reading this, you, your families and friends,

Gaynor Hintz

Cherry City Cloggers have suspended their dances indefinitely until the restriction on social gathering has been lifted and it safe to do so. We give tremendous cudos to Glee Johnson and Grace Allen as they are continuing to do videos of dances that we can access via YouTube or our website cherrycitycloggers.com to keep us all dancing and our skills sharp.

There was a group of our dancers who were considering going to the National Clogging Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana in July. However, we haven't heard anything as to whether that will be postponed.

We're hoping things will be back up and running somewhat normally in the near future so that we can continue to have our lessons for beginners starting in September. Georganne Pfnister

Happy Spring, everyone (I think!) Wish we were dancing and enjoying good weather. Time to shed the winter clothing and be comfortable, but we are not able to do that yet. We have been dark since March 12 and won’t start dancing again until the first part of May. The dance center is closed down for a deep cleaning and furnace replacement at the end of April.

We are looking forward to getting back to dancing and continuing on our way through the Fox Trot steps. We will change to our summer schedule in June through August. Just have to wait and see how this virus stuff hangs on. If things go well, we will have a 44th birthday party in June. Stay tuned for more details as time goes by. Marilyn Schmit

Where to begin? We cancelled our April dance. We are hoping to be able to hold both the kids' rescheduled fundraiser dance on May 3 and our regular dance on May 8. Please watch the Where & When to make sure that we haven't had to cancel or reschedule these.

The kids have had to pause on practicing and will hopefully keep working together some over the summer. Fundraising will continue for next year with everything that we raised this year rolling over to next year.

May 8 is our last dance with Leonard as our caller. If we are able to hold the dance, please come out to help us wish him well as he moves on as a cuer. Hope to see you soon!!! Petrina Buchheit

Hello Everyone, are you observing “stay home, stay safe” as a precaution to the CoronaVirus pandemic? Thank goodness for the OFN, huh? At least we’ll keep in touch.

We are monitoring the closure or our dances on a dance-by-dance basis and cancellation of a dance is dependent on whether the COVID-19 “lockdown” is still in effect or lifted. At the time of this publication, Chaps and Petticoats has cancelled three dances thus far: March 20th, April 3rd and April 17th (our Go Hog Wild dance), thus our May 1st dance may also be cancelled - check our website or Facebook page for future status.

On a humorous note: I saw a post of a business mascot whose face was covered by a medical mask. This does, indeed, make us feel like we are in an alternate universe, thus a good time to stay in touch with your members and friends - you are at home, just pick up the phone.

These are our upcoming dances through June, IF the COVID-19 “lockdown” is lifted - we will be ready to dance with you:

* May 1st (no-theme)...our Caller/Cuer is: Scott Zinser & Sandra Pinion

* May 15th, “Flags of Valor” dance with: Roger Putzler and Dave Cooper - wear the Red, White and Blue,

* June 5th (let’s just dance)...our Caller/Cuer is: Scott Zinser & Connie Clark,

* June 19th (to be determined … we were previously DARK to support Nationals). INFO: Since Nationals closed, we hope to dance … see June’s OFN.

DO check the OFN and the Chaps and Petticoats Web or Facebook media for future closure announcements.

Stay healthy,

Betty Chipps

Happy Hoppers - Link
One of the things that makes square dancing fun for most dancers is the challenge of learning new moves or of having a familiar move called from a different or unexpected position. Having a creative caller like Jim Hattrick keeps the Happy Hoppers learning and experiencing new dance moves and doing familiar ones from different positions. Such fun!

However, during the past month we have been challenged to learn a number of new things. Whoever heard of “social distancing” or “self-quarantine” before the coronavirus became a part of our lives?

Happily, though, we have also discovered some positive things. With emails, text messages and phone calls between friends, we have been reminded how much our members care about each other. When we were unable to hold our normal club elections, ballots were mailed to members and the response far exceeded expectations. Voting by mail works! When the board needed to meet to resolve some important issues, our secretary and his wife introduced the board to Zoom. It was a new experience for most of the board members, but it resulted in a successful meeting where the needed discussions took place and the issues were settled. Now those board members who were unaware of the potentials of internet meetings are pretty pleased with themselves and the experience.

Unfortunately, while the Hoppers have found some things to feel positive about, we still miss the together time we have with our friends when we are attending dances and events. Currently we are on hold waiting to feel confident that it is safe to once again square dance. Our lessons and dances have been suspended indefinitely. We are hopeful that by September we will be able to resume our lesson schedule. Perhaps before September it will once again be safe to resume regular dances and other activities that our club members enjoy participating in together. Until then, we hope all of our square dance friends remain safe and well and that we will see each other again when this virus has subsided.

Jean Tolstrup

We miss you all and miss square dancing but health and safety is a main priority during this coronavirus outbreak. None of us know when this will end and we will be together again on the dance floor with our fellow square dancers. Please stay home and stay safe.

While our hall has not been in use, we have used this opportunity for maintenance, and improvements to the hall. The old ceiling tiles in our basement have been replaced with a new ceiling and new lighting. New paint was also added. . We hope that when it is safe to gather and dance again that you will visit us and enjoy these lovely improvements to our hall.

We will post our dance dates on our website as soon as we know, meanwhile we wish you all good health. Stay home and stay safe.

The Ramblers have been in suspense since March 11. We were having so much fun teaching our latest group of Mainstream students to dance when the novel coronavirus decided to rain on our parade. We’ve experienced some heavy weather in our club’s history, but this is unprecedented. We miss the dancing and camaraderie, but keeping everyone healthy is our top priority. We will follow guidance from the state and federal health authorities as to when, and how, it’s safe to resume dancing. When we’re able to start dancing again, we will post updated information on our website, Facebook, and Meetup.

We’ve been keeping in touch with our members through a phone tree and by email messages. A couple of our members have had symptoms consistent with COVID-19 but were unable to get tested, so we can’t say for sure whether they had it. Hopefully, if they had it, they are immune now.

Our members report that they are reverting to simple pleasures such as planning and preparing home-cooked meals, knitting, writing poetry, reading, gardening, cuddling their dogs and cats, sewing, and catching up with friends and family by phone or trying out newer video technologies such as Zoom.

We wish good health, fortitude, and perseverance to all our square dance friends and colleagues all around the world.

SYIAS!

We hope everyone is staying healthy. We certainly miss our dancing and our dancers!!! Classes and dances have been on hold since Mid March - and at this point we don't know when we will be able to return to our favorite activity. We were scheduled to be dark already for the 1st dance in May. We have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel Boatnik, as well as our special MidWeek dance with Don & Marie Wood on May 13th. We were hoping to have Boatnik, but with all the uncertainty; we had no choice but to cancel. We appreciate Bronc Wise & Peter Gomez's understanding; and we look forward to having them at a future event! If you already purchased your ribbon; please consider rolling it over to 2021 Festival with Jet Roberts & Rey(Sherry) Garza. If you would like a refund, please let us know. Whatever you choose; please let Jeanne know so that we can keep track for next year. Her email is: slickjeans54@yahoo.com

Our May 16th dance is in limbo at this time; we will let everyone know as soon as we can if we will be able to have the dance. No flyer - just keep May 16th as a possibility - Chuck & Elaine are the scheduled Caller & Cuer and it's our Hug A Hero Dance! Again - we miss everyone and look forward to getting together and dancing again!!

Again, don’t forget July at Diamond Lake in 2020. We will have a real “TRIFECTA” and a bonus of 3 callers of National Status. We will have Mike Sikorsky, Michael Kellogg & Mike Haworth, with the bonus of Rikki Lobato as the featured cuer. There will also be the “Crazy Hat Contest” organized by Becky Petetit and the Friday afternoon Taco Bar organized by Lorri McIntosh.

The Stars held their annual election of officers on April 9th. They will officially take office in May. President: Phil Claudson 1st VP: Pierre Petetit 2nd VP: Thom Gilsdorf Secretary: Frank Krause Treasurer: Frances Ramey & Asst Treasurer/Rental: John Olson

The “Teddy Bear” dance originally scheduled for March 28th, is going to be postponed.

We are once again going to sponsor the Alzheimer’s Benefit Dance. It will be on Sunday, June 7, 2020 from 2 to 5pm. This is a very worthy cause and hits home to a lot of us in the square dance world. All proceeds will go to Alzheimer Research. The Callers & Cuers are donating their time and the Stars are donating the hall. A challenge has been issued. Last year we raised $520+ and the challenge is to double that, at the very least.

See you in a square

A message from the TVC President, Mike St.Clair: "Just a note to reach out to our family of dancers. I know everybody is missing our dances but we have to do what we can to keep everyone safe and healthy. Please let us know if anyone needs help we will do what we can to help. In my life I have not seen any thing like this but if we stick together we will come thru this and get back to what we do best dancing and having comradery with all of you. Stay safe and in touch"

Three of our TVC clubs had to cancel their Anniversary dances in the past two months; the R Square D 67th anniversary on the 28th of March, the Valley Squares 71st Anniversary on the 18th of April, and the Eager Beavers 45th anniversary on April 19th. All TVC clubs have suspended their dances and lessons due to the Covid19 pandemic. The Sunset Promenaders have set up a weekly conversation via email with members and any other dancers who want to join in. It is moderated by Ed & Ginny Mickelson. They can be contacted via the Promenaders webmaster for www.sunsetpromenaders.com. Other clubs may want to do something similar. It helps to keep everyone in touch.

Perhaps some light on the horizon... The Indianapolis 500 has been rescheduled for August 23rd, the same weekend that the Oregon Summer Festival is to be held in Seaside. Two TVC clubs are co-sponsoring the Summer Festival, which at this point, has NOT been cancelled. Hopefully, groups will once again be allowed by late August.

John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.” LIfe is happening all too suddenly and dramatically for most of us right now and nobody knows when we will feel normal again. We had all kinds of plans for April and May but now everything is stopped cold with no idea when we can dance again.

Our last dance was March 9th so there is not much to report. We had planned to vote on and install new officers in April and May but I am not sure how we will accomplish that task. Sadly, we also had to cancel our Anniversary Dance in April.

We started our plus classes in February and I have been amazed at how quickly our students have progressed. There are times when you cannot tell the students from the members and I think I might be one of those. Lessons will be rescheduled when we can safely start dancing again.

Remember Mother’s Day, May 13th. If you happen to be a mother look in the mirror and say, “I did the best I could with the information I had at the time.” Rules of parenting have changed quite a bit in the last fifty years and I am speaking of personal experience. I also ignored a lot of my mother’s advice, didn’t you?

Keep yourself well and healthy so you can join us when life becomes nearer to normal. We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Remember, our new dance hall is the Aloha Grange. Please check for up to date information at www.EagerBeavers.info.

Where ever did March go? Out the window! In response to the Covid19 pandemic, Hoedowners cancelled all planned May activities. We’re on hiatus until we’re given the go ahead for large group activities.

This is temporary. Let’s look ahead, stay safe and keep the welfare of the entire square dance community foremost in our minds and keep our distance.

M&M’s will not be dancing in May. In line with other clubs, we are going to be dark until further notice while the “stay home” order is in place. We hope it won’t be long until we are all up and running again. On a lighter note, we did hold our elections - all electronically this year. Our “old” Board has shuffled to these new positions: Dan will take over for Lindie as President and Lindie will take Dan’s place as Treasurer (they’ve been swapping for years!). Our VP is Rick, our Secretary is Pat and Robin is Member at Large. All are looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. Until then, please stay well and take care of each other.

We will keep you updated on calendar changes thru this OFN report as well as our website: mixandminglesquares.org

Dear Dancers, The last dance we had was on March 13th and was surprisingly successful, before Social Distancing really kicked in. We had 3 squares dancing. Jim Raupp was guest caller for this B51 dance, a wonderful opportunity for new dancers to experience what we all know: that square dancing is fun and worth the learning. It will keep up their anticipation for more dances after this time of social distancing is behind us.

Decisions for new officers have been made. Our new leader for the coming year is Chris Poole who will take the helm as our President, Marv Pope for VP, Pat Faires as Treasurer, and Judy Howland Secretary. It will be an interesting season for Chris' reign.

Well, dear friends, there won't be anything to report for awhile so, please adhere to safety guidelines so that we will meet again in a square soon. For current information see: www.r-square-d.info.

Toe Draggers are showing the remarkable ingenuity, resilience, and courage, indicative of square dancers everywhere. They are enjoying many activities: volunteering, baking, sewing, home improvements, gardening, yard work, exercising, on line schooling, games, puzzles, and getting things done now that they didn’t have time to do before.

Chin up everyone, this too shall pass. Until we all meet again in a square, stay well.

After our March 2nd board meeting, everything was cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic which is covering the world. We hope to continue board meetings, at least, over the internet. Our elections are due in the meantime but the pandemic looks like it will last several months at this point. We hope all of you stay home and stay well, and that we might all be together again in the fall.

I don't know what to say for May. We write this the first of April so we have the entire month to go before we can make a decision about dances or classes in May. Everyone is in this same situation, unfortunately. So all I can say is stay home, stay safe and we will all get back to dancing when we can. When we make a decision about our May dance it will be reflected in the OFN Where & When.

Take care, miss everyone, hope to see you soon,
