Oregon Federation News
June 2020

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 4 June 2020
Editor's Note

I don't think any dances were held in May. Some counties are slowly opening up, but it's not clear anything will happen in June, either. Stay healthy, and we'll get back to normal sooner or later.

Be sure to check on your club members once in a while. Since we're not seeing everyone regularly, it can get very lonely.

Coronavirus Update

Most of our square dance organizations are canceling dances, classes, meetings, and special events in response to the rapid spread of the coronavirus. We've compiled a list of the cancelations we know about on the Federation's web page here.

Federation Meetings

The Federation held its quarterly meeting by teleconference on May 17. Among other business, the results of the recent election were announced:

The next Federation meeting would have been at Summer Festival. In lieu of its cancellation, we will probably hold another teleconference in July.

Summer Festival

The 2020 Summer Festival, which was to be held at the Seaside Convention Center in Seaside on August 21-23, 2020, had to be canceled, due to the governor's orders on large gatherings.

Mid-Winter

Oregon's Mid-Winter Festival 2020 will be held January 22, 23 and 24, 2021, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Other National Events

The 73rd Silver State Festival in Sparks, NV, scheduled for May 8 to 10, has been canceled.

The 69th National Square Dance Convention® in nearby Spokane, Washington, has been canceled. Refunds will be issued.

The 70th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Jackson, Mississippi, June 23-26, 2021.

The 71st National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Evansville, Indiana, June 22-25, 2022.

The 72nd National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Mobile, Alabama, June 21-24, 2023.

Corporation Renewal Status

All clubs in the Oregon Federation are required to maintain their status as non-profit corporations with the State of Oregon. The Secretary of State's office mails out a renewal notice about a month before your registration expires every year. The following clubs expire this month:

June 10 -- Spin Cycle Squares
June 15 -- Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
June 19 -- Hayshakers
June 25 -- Oaky Doaks

We missed calling and cueing for the Emerald Empire's annual benefit dance the end of May. This year it was for Food for Lane County. We hope to be back to calling, cueing and dancing this fall. Our next scheduled 5th Saturday CCCA Dance is August 29, 2020, but we'll have to wait and see if it is even feasible to have that dance. We err on the side of caution. This virus business is just too scary to dismiss or think about lightly. Then, the next scheduled 5th Saturday dance after that is Halloween, October 31. We've had the 31st fall on a Saturday before and have had fun dances with costumes and spooky music for rounds and squares.

Stay healthy and be safe!

We have not had any dances since February nor do we know when we will be able to start dancing again. Please go to our website at CAS-SD.yolasite.com to check for possible dates. Please remember to call before driving into dance with us as we cannot always guarantee we'll be dancing if a poll taken the week before doesn't show enough interest.

We mostly dance from 2-4PM on Sundays, twice a month at the Emerald square Dance Center in Springfield at 2095 Yolanda in Hall B behind the building which faces Yolanda. We welcome all dancers who can dance at the A-1-A2 level. Sometimes we have a live caller but most of the time we dance to recorded tips. It is always a lot of fun.

Our last dance was our birthday dance Feb. 14 when we celebrated 56 years of dancing in Eugene and Springfield. We all miss getting together and dancing twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Fridays. We miss our callers, our cuer and our fellow dancers. There is no way to tell when we will once again be able to enjoy our "contact sport". Meanwhile we urge everyone to stay safe by practicing social distancing and wearing masks and gloves when out in public. We may at some point try dancing with masks and gloves to see how it might work.

We do hope to be back to dancing by next September at which point we expect to be dancing only once a month on the 4th Fridays at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 20th and Yolanda from 7:30 to 10:00, starting with plus at 7:30 and mainstream from 8-10:00PM. Once we can all get back to dancing it will be a blast to see all our friends once again.

Stay safe,

Gaynor Hintz

One of our members is moving to Wisconsin to be close to his family. We had a socially distanced gathering on a Sunday at the hall's parking lot. We parked six vehicles in a ginormous circle with the tailgates facing in. Patrick Finn drove down from Lebanon with his dog, Molly. It was a nice couple of hours to share and send Patrick off to Wisconsin with good wishes and virtual hugs. And, it was wonderful to see people too.

Stay healthy; be safe

Not much to report from CCC. To my knowledge thus far, we have all avoided the virus. We haven’t met to dance since the end of March and we are all missing it deeply, but we do have the ability to practice at home by going to YouTube or our website.

From what I am hearing from the Governor’s report, we may not be dancing until sometime in September. That being said, our demo season will be on hold as well since many of our venues have now been cancelled. Not sure if we'll have a beginner’s class in September or not as many of our new people come from the demos we are able to do during the summer. Georganne Pfnister

Hi everyone. I think all of us are ready to get back to dancing sooner rather than later.

As President of the club, I have tried to send out an email about every two weeks to see how everyone is doing and to keep them updated on what is happening with the club’s business transactions.

I sent out an email with a slate of officers and asked for approval from the paid membership so we could complete the Club Info form on the Federation website. That has been completed and the Corporation Division bill has been paid. So business continues even though we are not dancing soon until the Governor opens up the state more.

Hope you are all doing well and are ready to get back to dancing very soon. Marilyn Schmit

As of this moment we are still dark for the foreseeable future. We are hoping to be able to do something, anything in June but it is not up to us at this point in time.

As far as we know, none of our club members have contracted the dreaded virus. We are staying in touch, staying home and hopefully staying sane. We are looking to the future with hopeful expectation that dancing will once again be the highlights of our week. Until then, Yellow Rocks all around. Sheila Machado

We are now dark for the summer with our next regularly planned dance to be held in September.

Our competition youth went ahead and drew for their cash raffle winners, who are: Carson Clews, Sandra Thomas and Jean Goul. Thank you to all who bought raffle tickets from the kids this year. They really appreciate the support.

We are still in the process of picking a new club caller - harder to discuss and decide via emails. Hope to be out dancing again soon. Petrina Buchheit

I have no new news. I have not heard from anyone in our club, but I am assuming everyone is taking precautions and that no one has come down with the virus. Glory Be -- We held our elections by mail. Never mind our council not having any constitutional provision to do so. In this day and age, one needs to be flexible! Parliamentarian Jeff Knapp conducted the election.

Our new President will be Robert Lumsden and V-P will be Tami Helms. The rest of the crew remains the same: Treasurer, Jeff Knapp; Secretary, Eileen Petticrew; State Delegate, Betty Chips; Alt Delegate Tami Helms.

The rumor mill has it that Robert has big plans for us, and so does our very popular cuer, Tami.

According to my predication, the first club to begin dancing will be our Tumbleweeds. This is because they usually have only one square dancing (which is why they might be the first club to dance). Now just imagine what it would be like to have a couple hundred dancers show up for their first dance, and fill their coffer? Oh, their caller, cuer and president would swoon, not to mention their treasurer. Well, maybe later this year?

And if we get too stir crazy, perhaps a flash mob? We’ll have to figure out the social distancing in case the police get there before we disband. Back in the day, callers used to tell us to tighten up our square; now they may tell us to loosen our square!

“Are we there yet?” or “How much longer will it be?” are familiar questions to anyone who has taken a long road trip with children. For those of us who miss our wonderful square dancing activity these are thoughts that seem to reverberate in our heads on an almost daily basis. “When will we get back to square dancing again?” However, unlike a road trip that has a definite ending, this life trip has no definite ending, so we are left to remember and anticipate how wonderful it will be to be back together again enjoying each other’s company and a great activity. In the meantime, we spend our time enjoying the amazing weather, the gorgeous spring flowers, and keeping in touch with friends and family. And, just like a road trip, we know there will be an ending which prompts us to make plans for that time.

For the Happy Hoppers, those plans revolve around some amazing people who have agreed to serve as officers for our next dance year. We are delighted to have John and Arlene Kaleta as our incoming presidents. Since Gil Shoemaker enjoys working with students, he has decided to serve as vice president. We are extremely fortunate to have David Whalen continue as treasurer, Tom and Liza Halpenny as secretary, and Janet Linebarger as our PAC delegate. Newcomers to our club, Jim and Pam Roberts, have agreed to serve as our Evergreen Council delegates. What a terrific group! We are looking forward to a year filled with club activities and dances.

However, for the time being, we are canceling our June dances. Hopefully, restrictions will be lifted in time for us to get together at our annual club picnic in August. We are counting on our chefs, Randy Amundson and Don Oja, to fry up some extraordinary hamburgers and hot dogs. Not to be outdone, our club members always bring in outstanding side dishes and desserts. No one ever goes hungry at these events! We are definitely looking forward to resuming our regular schedule in September and hope to see the return of some truly amazing students at lessons and some terrific friends and fellow dancers at our regular dances. Until we can get back together again, stay well and stay in touch with others.

I am sure we all share the same hope and dreams of ending this pandemic and getting back on the dance floor again. I pray that the day will come when this pandemic is over and it is safe to gather and dance again. Until then We hope you are all staying well and healthy. Keep your chin up. We will get through this.

Due to state wide restrictions, all of our dances and activities have been cancelled from March ‘till at least July 6. We will have to wait until the state restrictions are lifted before we can dance again. As soon as we know, we will post this on our web site.

Meanwhile we are preparing for the day we open wide the doors to welcome you all back. These preparations include repairs and prettying up our hall., Ceilings and lights have been replaced in basement, restrooms, stairwell, foyer and coat room. Both bathrooms have been repainted. Two worn areas of our ballroom floor have been refinished and everything has had a good cleaning.

We are ready to welcome you all when that day comes. Meanwhile stay well.

Not much to report as all clubs are still shut down. The May council dance was canceled and July dance is TBD. One positive, Diamond Lake has not been cancelled. The club will be making a decision towards the end of June and if things can be worked out the Festival will happen. If given the ok for the festival then there will be several safety measures implemented to keep everyone safe. More info will be provided if the Festival can happen.

I hope everyone has stayed healthy. Not much to report for the Charlies. Another month shut down and missing dancing!!

Now that we are in Phase 1 of reopening, there might be a chance of dancing before the end of summer, but we just don't know yet. We miss everyone and hope to be back dancing soon.

Just in case, our currently scheduled dances for June are: June 6th Gumdrops & Yo-Yo's dance with J Domis & Bob Dingman. Pre-rounds at 7pm and MS/Plus at 730. June 20th Soda Shoppe Hop with Chuck Simpkins & Mark McDonald. Please keep an eye out for updates on https://charliebrownsquares.com/ and the Charlie Brown Facebook page!!

Late breaking update -- the Charlies have voted to cancel all June dances. We will try again in July.

We were disappointed to have to cancel Boatnik, but look forward to 2021 with Jet Roberts & Rey(Sherry) Gomez and will look forward to booking Bronc Wise and Peter(Chama) Gomez for a future festival!!

Hang in there and we look forward to getting back to dancing!!

Greetings from Yreka.

I assume that we, like you are on hiatus from square dancing. I also assume like us, that you miss your square dance friends. Due to the on going guidelines set for social distancing, and Covid-19 We will be canceling our annual Gold Diggers dance. With schools remaining closed we were not able to get the usage of Evergreen School. At this point, we are hoping that our county fair will still be held. If the fair does go as scheduled then we will have our "Pepsi Booth" at the fair, we also have a dance at the fair as a demo and promotion for upcoming classes, so we hope the fair goes as planned. We hope every one stays safe, strong, and in touch with family and friends. I am confident that in time, this to shall pass. We will keep you updated as we get info and as things get back to normal.

Hope to see you soon

Dean

At this time Diamond Lake for 2020 is still a go. We will have a real “TRIFECTA” and a bonus of 3 callers of National Status. We will have Mike Sikorsky, Michael Kellogg & Mike Haworth, with the bonus of Rikki Lobato as the featured cuer. There will also be the “Crazy Hat Contest” organized by Becky Petetit and the Friday afternoon Taco Bar organized by Lorri McIntosh.

The Stars held their annual election of officers on April 9th. They were installed at the Executive Board Meeting May 14th.

The “Teddy Bear” dance originally scheduled for March 28th, has been postponed.

The Alzheimers Benefit Dance scheduled for June 7th has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

The game night scheduled for May 8th was cancelled and will be scheduled for a later date.

You know what this is getting OLD-the canceling or postponing everything. Now that we're in Phase I, maybe we can start easing into some things.

Not sure about square dancing, but all least getting together with friends and club members for a visit

See you in a square

Two of the TVC clubs, Eager Beavers and Hoedowners, were co-sponsoring the 2020 Oregon State Festival with the Oregon Federation to be held in Seaside on August 21-23. Unfortunately the Festival has been officially cancelled. This decision was based on the guidelines put forth by the Governor of the State of Oregon. Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced on May 7th that all large gatherings, including festivals, conventions, and fairs, will not be allowed through at least September, until the state has access to a vaccine or reliable treatment for COVID-19.

In keeping with the social distancing guidelines, the TVC dance which was to be held at the Kinton Grange on May 30th has been cancelled.

The TVC and the TVC clubs have been active in ways other than dancing, getting together via Zoom, phone calls, and newsletters. Many have volunteered their services sewing masks for donation to care facilities.

We also held elections via email. Taking office in June will be: President - Mike St.Clair; Vice President - Jan Amerson; Secretary - Andis Garuts; Treasurer - Tammy Leblanc; and State Delegate - Josie Rosenbury.

Some of our member club dancers have found a way to continue dancing, at least dancing for one couple. There are currently five mp3 files available for download from https://buddyweavermusic.podbean.com/

I hope every one is doing well.

The CRD’s wished and wished we were dancing, but it was not to be. We do have a group of people do some line dancing via Zoom. The are getting together and learning and socializing on the web.

We are closed until who knows when. We probably will be in the fourth stage of the governor's plan which means into the summer season. As we are dark because of high temperatures in the grange hall, it seems most likely we will start again in September. If things go exceedingly well, however, we could try to dance once or twice before September. Everyone is anxious to get back.

In the meantime, stay healthy!

March 9th was the last time we were able to dance. When we have another dance is a question for which we have no good answer. We hold on to hope, keep calm, and carry on until the good times roll again. I think when we start the callers should give us refresher lessons. I think I am forgetting everything I ever learned. Look and you will see I wrote “when” not “if”. There is a future for us.

I have called a few of our members to learn how they are coping without dancing. Everyone is missing their regular contact time talking as well as the time dancing. I learned I should be calling more. Everyone I called seemed to be glad to hear a familiar voice asking how they were doing. You also hear some good stories. Some of us do things we have never tried before. I did ZOOM for the first time!

We were electing our officers remotely on May 4th. Our new slate of officers are President Sally Duyck, Vice President Ferrous & Karen Steinka, Secretary Judy Martin, Treasurer Mike Duyck, Delegates Leslie Tallman and Alice Hendricks.

Keep your eye on the OFN news. I am sure there will be headlines when it is deemed it is safe to resume contact sports such as ours. Right now please stay 6 feet from me and stay healthy. I want to be dancing with you in the future.

The following message is for your information when life as we used to know begins again: We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00, at the Aloha Grange, 3425 SW 185th, Beaverton, 97006. Please check for up to date information at www.EagerBeavers.info.

Hoedowners - Link
Back in the 60’s when Bob Dylan sang “The Times They Are A-Changin”, I thought our generation was going to change the world and here we are forty years later and a virus is changing our world in more ways than we could have imagined. We’ve adjusted before and we’re just doing it again.

As you might expect, the Hoedowners haven’t been square dancing but we’ve been busy none the less; painting for example. Members have been painting walls, ceilings, trim and paint by numbers. Hoedowners have been cleaning; drawers, floors, windows, closets and garages. We’ve been reading books, magazines, newspapers, online postings and owner’s manuals. We’ve discovered jigsaw puzzles are just as fun at home as on our beach trip. Hoedowners are outside working in their yards; planting, digging, spreading barkdust, gravel, laying pavers and making retaining walls. We’re digging out old recipes and finding new ones on the internet like that recipe for hand sanitizer. We’ve manned our sewing machines to quilt, make masks and finish the old projects that have been languishing in the closet.

Hoedowners are enjoying the great outdoors by walking at a safe distance and greeting other walkers from afar. We’ve been watching a mated pair of mallards, spotted a bull frog, a green tree frog and we’re just waiting for the tadpoles but it’s just a little too early. All the birds are frantically building their nests and we now have time to sit, watch and listen.

And shopping, wow that’s an adventure. We’ve all become online shopping pros ordering the exotic and the mundane. I’ve tried Home Depot curbside pickup, dashed into Costco at 9:30 opening and have put cash away. Covid19 may finally have made cash obsolete because no one wants to touch it except grandchildren.

We’ve discovered Door Dash, Grubhub, Uber Eats, Postmate, and the multitude of restaurants that deliver. We have found some duds but some gems as well. I’ve heard a rumor that there’s a new wing place in Beaverton that is great but they don’t deliver out here in Hillsboro. We may try a drive up there. If you have any recommendations let me know.

A million life experiences have been cancelled; graduations, weddings, reunions, cruises, etc. but most of our problems are small and will pass. As Hoedowner’s we’re just accumulating stories to share when we all get together again.

As for the future, who knows? We’ll keep you posted when we’re ready to take to a square.

As with everyone else, we are experiencing social distancing, and dances are cancelled until further notice. In the meantime, Oak Hills Squares members are busy helping neighbors and friends, completing projects at home, and MANY are walking the 2-mile loop around the neighborhood daily, where we can chat a bit when meeting en route. Several members have been making masks for the local hospital, and for a retirement home where one of our members is employed.

Our club secretary, Anne Scott, organized a Zoom meeting for us last week. More than fifteen of us participated, some wearing masks for fun (including one military gas mask!), our club shirts, and badges. It was fun hearing about what everyone is doing. It was such a success that another Zoom meeting is planned soon. Our board will also have a virtual meeting via Zoom for May.

Lane has been keeping us entertained with weekly emails directing us to fun dancing websites. The latest showed three different dances with calls for one couple! We tried it out, and it was great!

Everyone stay safe; we look forward to that first dance after this hiatus!

Dear Dancers, The last dance we had was on March 13th and was surprisingly successful, before Social Distancing really kicked in. We had 3 squares dancing. Jim Raupp was guest caller for this B51 dance, a wonderful opportunity for new dancers to experience what we all know: that square dancing is fun and worth the learning. It will keep up their anticipation for more dances after this time of social distancing is behind us.

Decisions for new officers have been made. Our new leader for the coming year is Chris Poole who will take the helm as our President, Marv Pope for VP, Pat Faires as Treasurer, and Judy Howland Secretary. It will be an interesting season for Chris' reign.

Well, dear friends, there won't be anything to report for awhile so, please adhere to safety guidelines so that we will meet again in a square soon. For current information see: www.r-square-d.info.

In April we were supposed to have our annual general meeting with elections and dinner out, but with the pandemic of course that couldn't happen. So we did nominations and elections by email. Our new officers are: President - Dale Brabham; Vice President - Gloria Davis; Secretary - John Prouty; Treasurer - Edith Prouty; Dance Coordinator - Lynnea Loveberg; TVC Reps - no volunteers yet.

We continue to have our monthly board meetings over Zoom. You know, I feel we are very lucky to live in our two beautiful states, with no hurricanes, tornadoes, stifling humidity, etc. Plus we have several months of nice weather to be outdoors, even if we're just walking in the neighborhood. So lucky in this way. But we must keep social-distancing, because the more we do that the sooner we can get back to square dancing. I find inspiration myself by listening to Governor Cuomo's daily press briefings (CNN approx. 8:30am, 30 minutes) because he takes it step-by-step and gives me hope. And if he can handle 19 million people in New York City plus the people upstate, then we as Oregonians and Washingtonians can handle this, like our ancestors handled the wars and pandemics and the Great Depression before us. Stay safe, and stay apart from each other - even though we hate that - to make it sooner that we'll all be dancing together again. One step at a time.

The Valley River Dancers (VRD) are chomping at the bit to get back to dancing when it’s safe, and we will be ready to do so just as soon as we get the green light. We will update our schedule on our new Facebook page and the Where and When as soon as we know. In the meantime, our members are trying to keep busy at home. A couple of our members are making face shields and attractive cloth masks—so creative!

Leonard Snodgrass is new to our club, not as the square dance caller you may know him as, but he is joining us on 2nd Fridays as our new cuer. Leonard is looking forward to broadening our round dance horizons with lessons for us in different rhythms. Our round dancing on 2nd Friday Plus night features intermediate level rounds. (I lose a round dance partner for one dance night, but the club gains a great cuer and teacher, so it’s worth the sacrifice. J)

In the spirit of honoring the stay at home order, the VRD had their semi-annual club meeting and election of officers via a zoom-type meeting. We give a warm thank you to the outgoing officers for their dedication and hard work, and we welcome our new officers now in place eager to serve. The 2020-2021 VRD Officers are: President – Dan Damon (Perrin); Vice President – Sheila Deuber (Tom); Treasurer – Teija Danskey (Stan); Secretary/Club Reporter – Judy Zimmerman (Steve); and Delegates – Perrin Damon (Dan) and Jan Amerson (Terry)

On a sad note, the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival has been cancelled as has the St Paul Rodeo. Traditionally we dance outside on the tennis courts right next to the carnival on 6th and Howard Streets. This is the first time in 39 years the festival has been cancelled. The dance was supposed to be Friday, July 24th.

We trust everyone is persevering ‘lockdown’ doing what they can to stay safe and healthy. We are very much looking forward to dancing with our friends again, hopefully soon.

It has been an honor to serve as VRD’s Secretary/Club Reporter for the past two years. I now pass the baton to Judy Zimmerman. I especially enjoyed being VRD’s delegate for the past year and attending the TVC meetings held at the Spaghetti Factory, delicious food and fellowship with friends. The club will now be officially represented by Perrin Damon and Jan Amerson.

Stay encouraged,

Josie Rosenbury
