A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 September 2021
President's Corner

This is the time of year for installation of new officers for the Federation. As President, I just want to say that the past year was unlike any other that a president has had to face. My goal during the pandemic was to remain positive, and write articles that gave encouragement that we would get back to dancing. Currently, we have achieved that goal, and with this month all clubs should be starting their new fall schedules. What a ride it has been!

On Sunday, September 12th, the Federation will meet at the Salem Square Dance Center in person with all officers, delegates and guests. Part of the business will be the change of officers. Attend if you wish, and watch as I move to Past President, and George Herman takes over as President of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dancers. I want to thank everyone who endured the Zoom meetings and got your reports in before the meetings. You officers and delegates were AWESOME! Thanks to each of you for your support during this non-normal time. Please give the same support to your next set of officers. We are all volunteers and give back in this way because we want to!!!

Barring any rise in Covid cases, we can go on as usual and enjoy this activity that we all love. Take time to thank your callers and cuers for hanging in there and for working to bring us back up to speed after such a long time away from dancing. The calls and cues will come back to you once the music starts.

Swing Your Partner and have a Good Labor Day weekend!

Gary Clark
2020-21 President

Wow, over 35 years of dancing and calling in this state and I am writing my first letter for the OFN! Here it is September and I will be installed as the President of the Oregon Federation, going to be an exciting time. Never thought, when I started dancing, that I would be in this position. I am looking forward to seeing how we can build our activity back up after being off for so long. Kudos to Gary Clark for leading the Federation through this long dark journey. This last year plus has shown us we can adapt and try new ways of communicating. And it has worked!!

Some clubs have already started dancing and have had some success. Others are not starting up until this month. Sadly, two clubs have decided to fold, a loss we can ill afford. Since some people are still nervous about coming out and socializing, it is going to be a gradual build up until we can incorporate our dancers back. I am hoping that, if your club is starting classes this month, you have availed yourself of the information put out by Kathy Roberts. If not, please do so, she is our state publicity chairman and has published some great information on advertising and promoting classes. I think that will be key to getting dancers back and bringing in new people to become members of the clubs.

Now we are starting to see more restrictions coming back. Hopefully they will not impact us as much as they have. We will think positive. Please follow all guidelines and safety protocols for your area.

Hope to see you on the dance floor soon.

When life boxes you in… Square Dance !

George Hermann
2021-22 President

Editor's Note

September is square dance month!

We have an embarrassment of riches this issue. We have notes from both the outgoing and incoming Federation presidents, and we have two thoughtful articles from the venerable Daryl Clendenin.

I had hoped this would be a joyous issue documenting the return of square dancing in Oregon, with most clubs starting back up again, but the recent reinstatement of the indoor mask mandate is going to put a damper on that. Several of our facilities have restricted operations again. Be sure to watch here and on Facebook for last-minute changes in the dance schedules.

I have some concerns about getting the OFN back on a regular schedule. Until the shutdown, I was automatically creating dance entries for the "regular dances" for all clubs. I haven't done that for about 18 months. It appears that many or most clubs are going back to a normal schedule in September, so I have started the automatic creation again. However, I know a number of clubs will not be starting right away. If your club is not restarting in September, please let me know so I can mark your dances "dark" for a while.

We enjoyed having a Fifth Saturday dance, July 31, 2021. CCCA members had a meeting beforehand and then a dance from 7 - . Roger Putzler, with his new knee, came and called along with Pat and Cherie Cox, Sandy Harris and Janet Geiger. Round dance cuers were Christina Corelli, Sandy Harris and Cherie Cox. Our treasurer, Gail Jackson, attended the door and had a chance to kick up her heels and have some fun. We were fortunate that every person in attendance had been fully vaccinated. We had three squares of dancers, callers and cuers. Our next scheduled Fifth Saturday CCCA dance is October 30, 2021, and, of course will have a Halloween theme with costumes encouraged but certainly not required. Mark this date on your calendar for more FUN!

We aim to please!

Cast A Shadow - Link
We have been dancing this summer but have only managed to get in one dance a month so far due to the heat wave in June and not being able to rent the hall one time in July. Each dance has been done to recorded tips by Darryl Lipscomb who calls at a level just right for our group at this time as we regroup after the COVID-19 pandemic hiatus. We are limiting our dances to only dancers who have been vaccinated and are willing to sign a waiver before dancing with us. As of Aug. 11 we are also requiring everyone to wear masks in line with the Governor’s mandate for indoor gatherings.

We are expecting to dance on August 15 this coming Sunday, as I write this, in Hall B of the Emerald Square Dance Center located behind the building on 20th and Yolanda in Springfield. We are expecting about two squares of dancers. The next few dances we will aim for will be on Aug. 29, Sept. 5 and 19 as long as we get at least a square affirming their intention to dance and the hall is available. Please get on Fred Beisse’s email list if you want to hear about our dances in advance and be able to sign up to come. On our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com, you can contact CAS by filling out the form on the contacts page.

Hope to see you in a square,

Single Trees - Link
Single Trees had our last dance July 16, a third Friday as Diamond Lake was on the 4th Friday and several of our members were headed there. We had Terry Halley calling and Jackie Gale cueing that night to over three squares in the hall. We followed our normal format of plus at 7:30 and mainstream from 8-10PM. We did not take a break but members had provided refreshments and many did sit out a tip in order to take a break and chat with friends. There were a few who wore their crazy t-shirts—perhaps more will next year as we intend to have the same theme next July.

In July the weekend before our dance on the 9th we held our annual club picnic at Suzanne Peterson’s country park like property off Seavey Loop Rd. We had barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs with side dishes and desserts provided by members. It was a lot of fun and very relaxing eating and talking under the shade of Suzanne’s tall trees. Some of us took the opportunity to pick blueberries which Suzanne always has a super abundance of in July.

In early August we were saddened when we learned that one of our long time members, David Hahn, had passed away after developing double pneumonia. Dave had not been able to dance with us for some time but had come out with his wife Sharon last September to enjoy our outdoor get together. A Celebration of Life will be held at our hall in Springfield on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 2-4PM.

In August on the 27, a fourth Friday, Darrell Kalmbach will call and Jackie Gale will cue. Due to the new mandates announced on Aug. 11 no food will be provided on the break bar nor will we serve coffee or tea. Dancers are urged to bring their own beverage and snacks if they need them. Also masks will be required. We will observe the same format with 7:30 plus and 8-10 mainstream.

Starting in September at our Sept. 24, 4th Friday dance, we will be changing our format: 7:30 pre-rounds; 7:45 plus; 8-10 mainstream with every third tip plus. Jim Hattrick will be calling that dance for us along with Jackie Gale, cueing.

Please come out and dance with us. We would love to see you in one of our squares.

We will finally start dancing in September, but with a change of format for this month only. Our hall isn't available on September 4, so our first dance will be on Sept. 11 at the Square Dance Center. This is the Federation meeting weekend and IWW will be hosting the dance and our own George Hermann will be installed as Federation president.

Our second dance of the month will be held on September 18 in our own hall at the Polk County Fairgrounds; Plus workshop at 7:00 p.m., mainstream dancing from 7:30-10:00 p.m. The door fee is $6.00 per person.

Lessons will start on September 12 at the Polk County Fairgrounds from 6:00-8:00 p.m. George will be teaching the new Social Square dancing format which includes 60 moves in 12 weeks. The new dancers could graduate before Christmas and we could potentially start a new class in January. Lesson fee is $6.00 per person. LaVerne

Hello to all of you. Hope that your summer has gone well and that you have more or less survived the heat that has been provided for all of us.

We are starting a step-up class for those Phase 2 dancers who are ready to move up to easy level Phase 3. The class will be on Thursdays, from 6:00-7:00 p.m., and will have rumba, or cha, to start with. The cost will be $5 for the lesson. Starting date is September 9, 2021. Check out the flyer in the OFN.

The intermediate level dancers are working on finishing West Coast Swing and have not decided on what to teach at our 7:45 p.m. time slot for the fall season. Check the OFN for upcoming flyers on what will be taught.

Our summer sessions have averaged between 6-9 couples each week and they have been comfortable with no masks required, just recommended for those who are unvaccinated. We have held two Saturday evening dances that have been very enjoyable and relaxed. We will see what we can come up with for a fall dance in October or November.

Salem Swingin' Stars
Salem Swingin' Stars club is now dancing our regular schedule of first, third, and fifth Friday dances. We begin at 7:00 p.m. with Pre-Rounds, 7:30 p.m. for Plus and 8:00-10:00 p.m. Mainstream with Rounds, followed by a Final Plus tip. We have really enjoyed the dancers from all over the valley. It is a pleasure to see your faces across the square.

We are planning our Annual Corn & Cluck Dance for September 17. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates. Salem Square Dance Center is air conditioned for your dancing comfort.

See you on the dance floor.

Silver City Squares
We are back to dancing! We are enjoying our hall which has been painted over the summer as well as getting some other needed maintenance.

We are still in the process of auditioning for club caller and cuer, but we are hoping to make a decision by the end of the year.

We danced in the Homer Davenport Days Parade in August, mostly our youth, but we did have fun.

Lessons have started for us - more info to come.

Willamette Squares
Despite the heat, Willamette Squares held their July dance at the Salem Square Dance Center. The air conditioning worked fine, and everyone was comfortable dancing in the cool of the room.

Having not danced for some time during the pandemic, we decided that it would be beneficial to all of us to have an opportunity for some review. Therefore, it was decided to hold two workshops at the Salem Square Dance Center, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., free of charge to anyone and everyone who would like to participate on August 8 and 22. We hope those of you who are interested in brushing up on your dancing skills will be available to take advantage of these two workshops.

Willamette Squares is happy to be hosting regular dances again!

We started dancing in the middle of June, the second club in our council to do so. Some weeks, however, we were dark because of the heat. (We don’t dance if the temp reaches 90.)

At our board meeting, Aug 18th, most members expected us to close down because of the emergency mask mandate of the State of Oregon. Instead, our board voted to continue dancing, even with masks, and our visitors also pledged to support us! We will also be having our lessons, per this magazine. The first three lessons will be free.

We had a guest from southern California, caller Bob Grigsby, who came with his own cheerleading squad! Never missing a beat, our caller/cuer person was right there to collect his information. He’ll probably be one of our callers for next year.

River City Dancers - Link
In July we had a free dance to welcome everyone back. We had only one dance in August and it was the day after our state mandate requiring masks in all indoor public buildings. I am pleased to report that the dance was well attended by members of River City Dancers as well as guests from Hoedowners and Valley Squares. Three dancers wore face shields and all the others wore masks. The hall’s air conditioner kept us all comfortable in spite of the hot outdoor temperature that evening. We ended the month with a club picnic in a member’s beautiful back yard.

It was stated in last month’s club article, that we would be back on our regular schedule in September but that too has changed for the month of September. We will have only one dance in September and that will be the third Saturday in September. That is September 18. Please join us. We look forward to dancing with you.

The Charlie's are dark in August. We are looking forward to starting classes in September. Starting Thursday, September 9th, we will be offering Mainstream FunShops from 630-8pm and a new Plus class for new Plus dancers and those that need/want to review. The Plus class will be from 8-930pm. Our 1st SSD class will be on Tuesdays, starting September 14thfrom 630-830pm. We don't have any dances scheduled for September due to Labor Day weekend and RV Rendezvous happening the 3rd weekend. Lots of fun planned for the remainder of the year, though!!! October we will have Chuck & Sarge providing the entertainment for our 1st Saturday dance(flyer should be out next newsletter). Then Oct 15-17 is the Miles of Smiles Weekend with Mike Seastrom! See flyers for all the info. I've also included an additional flyer with all of the events happening. Going to be a great weekend; and a long time coming!! Can't wait! November we have Roger Putzler & Mike Sikorsky on the 1st/3rd Saturdays. Our 54th birthday dance will feature the wonderful Pat Carnathan (he did Boatnik several years ago); and finally our last dance of the year will again feature Roger Putzler - he is very excited to be calling a Christmas dance - something he said he never gets the chance to do. Should be fun!! Flyers for the remaining year's events will be out soon. We hope that things improve soon so we can see your smiling faces on the dance floor.

Hugs,

Rikki

The July TVC meeting was held via Zoom. We will continue the Zoom meetings through September. A new venue or the re-establishment of our previous agreement will need to be pursued so that we can resume our meetings in person.

Our Vice President, Jan Amerson, has completed editing the TVC Directory and it will soon be sent to the publisher for printing. This effort has been difficult this year because of the changes due to Covid.

Each year the TVC hosts the Hahn Barn Dance. Unfortunately we had to cancel it this year but plans are being made for next year. The TriCouncil dance on October 30th is being hosted by the TVC with Darrell Kalmbach and KC Curtis calling with Tami Helms cueing. A location for this dance is not set at this writing. More details to follow.

September marks the month where nearly all of the TVC clubs will resume dancing, some with refresher or workshop tips, and with at least two clubs even offering fall lessons. All are accepting visitors. See individual club reports below.

Columbia River Dancers - Link
The Columbia River Dancers are in a state of change. On August 1st The Hazel Dell Grange board voted to permanently CLOSE the building, citing a variety of reasons including furnace and roof repairs, repairs from a recent break-in, and back taxes. Club officers met with their board in an effort to assist them in getting the necessary repairs and their other problems under control but it was to no avail.

The club has not giving up hope as we are seeking other ways to keep the club dancing. To that end the officers of the club have met with the Manor Grange officials and are close to an agreement to dance in their hall. We have tentatively made the following arrangements with the grange. We will dance on the first and third FRIDAY of the month and will have round and square dance lessons on SUNDAY evenings. Again, this is tentative as we seek input from our club members. The reports we have received so far are positive. I stress that no final decision has been made yet. I will say that in discussions with our caller, Jim Hattrick, he is on board with the times and days.

Our Secretary, Melissa James, has a list of members and friends of CRD to which she emails news about our club and future dances in the area. Look for her emails as we believe this will be the major way we will get word out to the square dance community. We are currently looking to start dancing on September 17th. That is NOT set in stone, however.

The club had a picnic/annual meeting in July with 24 in attendance. The officers have been recruited to serve another year.

We look forward to having the square dance community come visit our new home. Until then, remember in a turn through you use your inside arm to turn the person facing you.

R Square D - Link
Many R Square D members gathered July 17th at Pat Faires’ home on Mayfield Lake for a club meeting and picnic. This has been an annual club event for many years, where we barbeque and socialize in a beautiful outdoor setting.

The club decided to begin hosting dances and lessons in September. We will “warm up” Wednesday, September 8th, with Plus from 6:30 – 7:30 PM and Mainstream from 7:30 – 9:00. We are not charging for this workshop/dance evening, but will have a donation can at the door.

Regular lessons will start the following Wednesday (9/15) at the same time (Plus from 6:30 – 7:30 and beginner’s class from 7:30 – 9:00).

Our first dance of the year will be Friday, September 10th, and the theme is “Back in the Saddle Again”! The Kelso Senior Center board requires non-vaccinated people to wear a mask in the building and there will be an abundant supply of hand sanitizer. Looking forward to dancing with many of our friends again!

Sunset Promenaders - Link
The Sunset Promenaders are doing well. We are having our regular scheduled dances and the have been well attended. We dance at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays at the Odd Fellows hall in Hillsboro. Also our Promenaders Plus Dance’s are on the 1st and 3rd Thursday, at 7pm at the same location. The best part is our Secretary, Dianne, goes to the hall early and turns on the air conditioner for your comfort.

We do not require masks at this time, but you are welcome to wear one if you choose. Of course, we will continue to follow the mandates from the Oregon Health Authority and the Governor's office regarding masking. Most of our dances have had at least four squares which has been awesome. Through August our Saturday mainstream dance will be Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cuer. Starting in Sept 2021 our Saturday Mainstream dances, Mike Stout will be calling and Julie Stout will be the cuer. Our Plus dances on Thursday the caller will be Darrell Kalmbach and the cuer will be Tami Helms.

The Promenaders have a lot coming up including our club camp out in September which is always well attended. We are also helping put on the Seaside Sashay on October 22-23 2021. We will have the signup info at our hall with ribbons. Dianne Pratt and Gary Clark are handling the signups so if you are interested in going contact Dianne or Gary or come to our dances and we will get you signed up.

Hope to see you all on the Dance floor.

In a burst of optimism and hoping the pandemic doesn't interfere, at our July board meeting we lined up the coming year's events for our club. We will have workshops on Sunday afternoons at the Tigard Grange for our Tri Squares members only; for Square Dance/Plus review (Sept.12 - Oct. 24, 3:30 - 5:30), and for Round Dance review (Oct. 3 - Oct. 24, 2:15 - 3:15). New Social Square Dance lessons for everybody will begin Sunday Jan. 2 - March 27, (3:30 - 5:30).

Our regular dances for the year (2nd/4th Fridays) will begin at our grange on October 8th, with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cuing. We will miss our normal September anniversary dance this year, but we do plan to have our Mardi Gras dance in February.

Also, we've gotten so accustomed to board meetings on Zoom that we plan to continue doing that, which saves time and travel for everyone. Here's hoping the Delta Covid-19 variant doesn't get in the way!

Valley River Dancers
It was good to be back at our home location for our July 9th Plus dance with guest caller, George Hermann, and Leonard Snodgrass as our Round Dance cuer.

Our July 23rd Dance Under the Stars was a big success with Darrell Kalmbach as our guest caller and Leonard Snodgrass as our Round Dance cuer. It was a lovely evening under the stars on the tennis courts in Newberg and we drew some interest from passersby and neighbors in the area. It was so good to see our square dancing friends who we have not seen in a long time it seems.

We had our 5th Saturday Advanced Dance on July 31st at the Woodburn Estates Clubhouse with Randy Dibble as Caller. It was good to have you back Randy!

August Up-date: Since I got the dates wrong in the last issue of the OFN, here is an update for our 4th Friday, Aug. 27th, Mainstream Dance. It will be our Hawaiian Dance with Randy Dibble as our caller and guest cuer, Judy Russell. We will be at the Chehalem Community Center, 502 E. 2nd St., Newberg, OR 97132. We hope you will all join us.

September Dances will be at the Chehalem Community Center on: Friday, September 10th, Plus level with Randy Dibble as caller and Leonard Snodgrass as cuer; and Friday, September 24th, Mainstream level. This will be our 50's Dance with Randy Dibble as caller and Leonard Snodgrass as cuer.

We will be beginning Mainstream Lessons on the second Tuesday of September: That is September 14th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. We invite you and invite your non-dancer friends to join us. Lessons will be every Tuesday at the Chehalem Community Center in Newberg for 16 weeks. Randy Dibble will be our instructor. For more information, contact us on our Facebook page: Valley River Dancers - Newberg or through our email address at newbergdancers@gmail.com.
