Invitation to Boise Square Dance Hall
Greetings to all Oregon dancers! I'd like to invite you to join us for a couple of upcoming dance events at the Boise Square Dance Hall. In October we will be having the ISRDA Round Dance Festival, featuring Debby and Tim Vogt from Las Vegas, Nevada. This will be a great weekend of phase III thru V dancing, starting Friday night October 15, and ending with a phase V Waltz teach on Sunday.
In November The Fall Jubilee is happening with featured caller Andy Allemao from Chula Vista, California. This will be a fun Friday and Saturday full of great energy dancing and good workshops.
Flyers for both these events are in the advertisements section below, with registration and schedule information. If you have questions about the round dance weekend, you can contact Kathy Shaw at (208) 830-5870, and for questions about either event you can also contact Darlene Wooden at (503) 583-5473 or at my email:
darlenerodeo@gmail.com
We'd love to have you come join us on our great wooden dance floor.

Obituaries
- Ann Skoe
Oct. 7, 1944 – Aug. 31, 2021
Ann Louise Skoe, age 76, was called home to be with the Lord August 31. Ann was born to Thomas J. and Virginia (Walker) Sweeney in Rockland, Maine, a city that always held a special place in Ann’s heart. In addition to Rockland, Ann’s early years were spent in New Orleans, LA, Texas City, TX, and Bellevue, WA before her family moved to Tigard, OR where she graduated from Tigard High School in 1962.
Ann married Darcy Frederick in 1963, and they had two children, Jason John Frederick and Andrea Jean (Frederick) Wachowski. Following her divorce from Darcy, Ann married Roger Skoe in 1975 in Salem, OR. Ann very much appreciated the fact that she and Roger always remained good friends with Darcy and his wife Kathy as they shared parenting responsibilities for their children.
Ann was active in the women’s movement for equal rights and was proud to have attended the National Women’s Conference in Houston in 1977.
Ann graduated from Willamette University in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and American Studies. During her time at Willamette University she worked as an intern in Oregon Governor’s office.
Ann was always open to new adventures, and was excited about the opportunity to move to Alaska in 1984 when Roger’s employment resulted in relocation to Juneau. In Alaska, Ann worked as a Research Analyst for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. Ann retired from that position when she and Roger relocated to Canby, Oregon in 1998. In her “retirement” Ann drove a school bus for a number of years “to help support her hobbies.”
Ann had many interests and hobbies, and was active in her church and the community-at-large. Ann and Roger participated in square dancing for a number of years, starting when they lived in Salem. They continued the activity in Alaska where Ann also developed an interest in Square Dance calling. Ann subsequently started a youth square dance group in Juneau. Following their return to Oregon, Ann started a youth square dance group in Canby that she led for a number of years.
She always was learning new skills, and then passing those skills on to others. After taking clogging dance lessons, Ann found herself teaching clogging at the Canby Adult Center. After Ann’s health made her dependent upon the use of canes or a walker for support, Ann continued clogging and line dancing until recently, which contributed to one of her nicknames, that of “Two-Cane Annie.” Ann was known for her sense of humor and creating smiles on the faces of those around her.
As Ann’s physical health resulted in more limitations of her mobility, she still kept her mind active with a variety of word games and puzzles, and was always “creating,” whether it was assembling “scrap rolls” for the church quilters, or knitting. (The more complicated the knitting project, the better she liked it). The knitting projects more often than not, were projects that were to be donated.
Ann also loved a good garage sale and shopping at Goodwill/Thrift stores, as she was always on the lookout for yarn to add to her “stash.” On trips out of town, a stop at the local thrift store was usually high on her agenda.
Ann died peacefully August 31 at her home in Canby from the effects of a tumor in her spinal cord for which treatment was no longer effective.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Patricia McDowell. Ann is survived by her husband Roger; son Jason Frederick; daughter Andrea (Anthony) Wachowski; grandson, Andrew Austin, and great-granddaughter, Ellie Austin.
A memorial service is planned for October 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Zoar Lutheran Church (190 SW 3rd Ave., Canby, OR).
Contributions in Ann’s memory may be made to Zoar Lutheran Church, Canby Adult Center, The Canby Center, OHSU’s War on Melanoma, or a charity of your choice.

We are not dancing at this time due to the surge in the Delta variant and so many of our members having underlying health issues. We hope to resume our Sunday afternoon dances in Hall B at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield as soon as it appears the surge has died down. If you have any questions, please call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 (cell) or Gaynor Hintz at 541-741-4149. When we do resume, we will again request that those who attend be fully vaccinated.

In July Single Trees had our club picnic as well as our one dance of the month on the 16th. Both were well attended considering the times.
In August we had our one dance of the month on Aug. 27 with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Sandra Pinion cueing. Darrel was calling to the floor of two squares, most of whom were plus dances and thus good help to some of our mainstream dancers who are catching up. He was terrific as always. We appreciate his being willing to come such a long distance to call for us. Sandra said she had not cued in a year and a half but hadn’t lost any of her skills. She has great timing and a clear voice. She also drove a long way to cue for us, and we are so appreciative. It would have been nicer to have more squares and round dancers on the floor, but with the rise in COVID-19 cases in southern Oregon and Lane County in particular many opted to stay home and be safe.
We hope to hold our regular 4th Friday dance on September 24 with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing as long as everyone feels safe in attending. The numbers are not dropping and of course the fear is that after Labor Day the numbers might increase. Wait and see.
We have changed our format and will begin with 15 minutes of round dancing from 7:30 to 7:45 followed by 15 minutes of plus. Mainstream will begin at 8 with every third tip plus until 10PM when we close up. We hope to see more members and more square dancing friends out to join us if we have our Sept. 24th dance. Masks or face shields must be worn until the Governor change the mandate. Thanks, everyone, for your support!
We are also hoping to see more dancing at the Emerald Dance Center in October if Roger Putzler gets his lessons started on Tuesdays at 7PM. There are lots of people waiting to get into our activity, and we hope to see a good class out as well as many angels seeking to brush up their skills after a long time not dancing. Roger is also hoping to offer another mainstream dance the 1st Friday of every month as well as a plus dance the second Friday of every month. Again much will depend on the number of cases of COVID-19. Stay tuned.

Cherry City Cloggers really doesn’t have a lot of news to report. We have two relatively filled CoVid compliant classes going on at the present time and all are back to wearing masks and distancing on the dance floor. For those who like to take things a little slower
and more casual, we have the 4:00 p.m. class and for those who would like
to take it to the next level, we offer the 6:30 p.m. class. Glee Johnson is teaching our 4:00 class and Stacie does the 6:30 one.
We plan to start the Intro to Clogging class Tuesday, September 14 at 5:45 p.m. but that will be dependent on the number of participants that have signed up. The lack of
being able to do demos this summer and really have people see what fun clogging is has hampered our being able to get the word out and create a desire for new people to come and join us. If anyone is interested in joining us, please check our website cherrycitycloggers.com to see if our intro class materialized and contact Mary Ellen Ramseyer, our president, about joining. If this class materializes, I believe Mary Bray and Glee will be co-teaching this class. Georganne Pfnister

The Corvallis Squares had a potluck dinner in August and the plans were quite creative, with some sharing potluck dishes and some bringing their own meal. The potluck was followed by a club meeting, with the option of attending via Zoom if not there in person. This has been a season that’s required a lot of flexibility! Our club decided not to hold September dances and we are waiting to decide on our October dance. We wish you all the best as we wait to start dancing again! Karen

Because we had too many conflicts with the Polk County Fairgrounds, we have changed the location of our lessons to the Salem Square Dance Center. The lessons started on September 12 and will run until mid-December.

This was written before the first class of the season started. We are having two classes this year. The first one is a step-up class for those who are ready to move up from Phase 2 to Phase 3 and we are starting with Rumba from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursdays. The regular Intermediate class will be Waltz 3 review and moving on to Waltz 4, from 7:45-8:20 p.m.
We had a comfortable dance in August for “It’s Almost Fall”. We are in the planning stages for another dance in October. At the moment, the tentative theme is “Don’t Match”. Stripes, plaids, strange socks, mismatched shoes, etc. Of course since it is Halloween month, costumes will be accepted also. Just something fun to get rid of the doldrums from all this virus stuff.
We are always looking for visitors to come and share our dance floor at the Salem Square Dance Center on Thursdays. More than enough room for anyone who likes to dance at the Intermediate level. Marilyn Schmit

We will continue to dance every chance we get! Face masks or face shields notwithstanding. Mainstream lessons began on Wednesday September 8 as well as Plus lessons later in the evening. Lessons will continue until mid-January. We are
looking forward to seeing new and experienced dancers on the floor.
Our Annual Corn ‘n Cluck dance was held on September 17. (This was the COVID version, so in lieu of corn on the cob and roasted chicken, the dancers were treated to bags of candy corn and wind-up chicken toys.) Fun was had by all who attended.
We would like to thank all the dancers from the Mid-Willamette Valley who continue to attend our dances on a regular basis. We would be quite lonely without you. Mark your calendars for our Spooktacular Halloween Plus Dance on Friday October 29. Costumes are highly recommended. A flyer will be posted soon. Check our Facebook page for details for each dance. We have been helping the Waldo Hills Community Club with maintenance jobs over the summer (including painting). So now our hall has a "freshened look" inside. They still have some more work planned.
We will be dancing but anyone planning to attend one of our dances, please be aware that we will be following whatever current mask requirements are in place for each dance. For September, we had the enjoyment of dancing to KC Curtis and Julia Buchheit. We are looking forward to Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell in October and Ian Craig and Julie Stiers in November. We’re very glad that things are seemingly getting back to normal, except for dine-in fast food places and square dance festivals. Let’s all write them and urge them to get up to speed.
Some clubs are just starting to dance, but our club has been dancing for some three months. You’re very welcome to drop in and see what we have to offer.
Our lessons started Sept 8th and are doing well.

Chaps' first Intro to Square Dance lesson of the season was held SEPT 12th. We had enough Angels to make three squares, however, we got our three (3) students into the squares and ran with two squares on the floor. A nice problem to have...thank you Angels! We have at-least double the student commitments for SEPT 19th - will share our success stories next time.
Chaps and Petticoats were dark for the July and August months. We also elected to go DARK on SEPT 3rd (our first-Friday dance night) in favor of attending a Labor Day weekend dance (we had a square of Club members too) - however, the venue cancelled, electing caution instead, due to indoor/outdoor mask mandates and the COVID-Variant increasing numbers. Cancellations were a common factor in the month of September.
On a positive note, a handful of C&P members have enjoyed Wednesday night dances at Bachelor and Bachelorettes and first & third Friday night dances at Salem Swinging Stars - the return of dancing has been a welcome experience for our feet and mental health too.
Thank you to Independent Wagon Wheelers who hosted the Federation (quarterly) meeting and dance night. George and Patty Hermann called & cued and invited visiting Callers and Cuers from the floor onto the stage - what fun and so cool, to experience tips and rounds with a bunch of out-of-area voices on the mic too.
Chaps and Petticoats will host a” Pirate” dance on October 1st, Scott Zinser/Tami Helms will call and cue. Do dress the part as Costume Prizes will be awarded. Our October 15th dance (no theme - casual OK) will feature Terry Halley/Caller and ‘little bit' Sandra Pinion/Cuer. Keep posted on the COVID guidelines as mask/face shield mandates may still be in effect … but casual is a good reason to turn out!
Sunday Lessons on October 17th, are 5:00-7:00pm followed by our third-Sunday dance at 7:00-9:00 - do come join us.

After not having danced for a year and a half, due to Covid, it is time to make new plans for dancing again just as many other clubs are doing . The process is still evolving. We had one dance in August and one in September. We now have a new board. They along with our club membership, are in the process of making future plans for our club. We will let you know as soon as these plans are made. Stay tuned to our web site and the OFN.

The August TVC meeting was held via Zoom. We will continue the Zoom meetings until at least October. A new venue for our in person meetings has not been found.
The TriCouncil dance on October 30th at the Kinton Grange is being hosted by the TVC with Darrell Kalmbach and KC Curtis calling with Tam Helms cueing.
The TVC had a lengthy discussion about the future of the Summer Festival, and voted for the option of having the Federation host it with Council contributions. Only held every other year on odd numbered years, the next Summer Festival will be in 2023.
The 2021 Seaside Sashay was planned for October 22nd and 23rd, and Gary Clark mailed out ribbons to all who paid for last year’s cancelled weekend. However, this year’s Sashay was cancelled due to the Covid situation. Caller Ray Brendzy informed us that Canada has again closed its borders and it would cost him $200 each way for a Covid test to cross over and back.
Many TVC clubs have changed their dancing schedule since last month with several delaying the beginning of their dancing. See individual club reports below.

I do not like roller coasters. You go up slowly, building suspense, then the world seems to drop out from under you. This past year and a half has felt like a repeated roller coaster ride. The CRD's had an anniversary dance and then closed the doors. We get ready to dance again and the Hazel Dell Grange shuts the doors. But, as in a roller coaster, the ride hopefully comes to an end and you can open your eyes again.
We have a new home with a wonderful wood floor, great acoustics and Jim Hattrick calling for us. As we go to press with this issue we are heading into a new, and hopefully, smoother ride.
We invite you to come see our new home at the Manor Grange, located at the corner of 72nd Avenue and 179th Street. From Interstate 5 take the County Fair Exit, turn right and go three miles east. Coming North on 205, take the Padden Parkway exit west, turn right on to Andresen Rd. It will turn into 72nd Avenue. Stay on 72nd till you get to 179th. Hope to see you soon.
Columbia River Dancers will follow the Washington state guidelines regarding mask requirements at indoor dances.

The Eager Beavers have been dancing Plus every Monday since early June except for one cancellation on the day after the 115 degree day. Our caller lineup remains Jim Hattrick, Daryl Clendenin, and Darrell Kalmbach. Our cuer situation has changed with Yvonne Clendenin and Joyce Hooper both retiring. We are excited to announce that Jeanine Norden has joined our family with Connie Clark helping us out on an interim basis.
All of our members have been vaccinated and all visitors as well. We keep an updated list and ask all attendees who are not on the list for proof of vaccination. Proof of vaccination is a requirement to dance with the Eager Beavers.
We cancelled our Picnic due to Oregon mask mandate at outdoor settings. For up to date information go to our website www.EagerBeavers.info.

In August, R Square D decided to cancel the planned September dances and the start of lessons, due to the huge increase of COVID cases and the new Washington state mandate regarding masks. As of this writing, no decision has been made about whether to dance in October. If we do so, our “Back in the Saddle” dance will be Friday, October 8th and that will be our only October dance.
Postponing dances is disappointing to many but the priority is for everyone to be safe. Please check our web site www.r-square-d.info for more up-to-date information as it gets closer to October.

Hi from the Sunset Promenaders and Promenaders Plus. We had our Monthly Zoom Meeting in August 26th and as you probably already know the decision to cancel the Seaside Sashay was made because of the Covid situation.
Other than that we are still dancing on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, as well as Plus on the 1st and 3rd and 5th Thursdays of the month.
As for the mandate from the Governor we are requiring masks or face shields at our dances. We will continue to monitor the rules that need to be followed and update you as needed.
All of our dances start at 7pm and end at 9:30 pm. We are going to start having cookies at our Saturday dances after the dance so our dancer's can have a little social time. As of right now there will be no food at our Plus Dances, just lots of dancing. Mike and Julie Stout will be back in our hall as Caller and cuer on Saturday dances starting in September. Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms will continue the calling and cueing on Thursdays.
As a club we have been and are pretty active. On the 22nd of August we had our club picnic at Dan and Terri Browning's house and everybody had a great time with a great turnout.
On Saturday, October 2nd, we will be celebrating our 36th year with an Anniversary Dance at 7pm. Mike, Julie, Darrell, and Tami are joining forces to call and cue the dance. We are having an Ice Cream social after the dance at 9:30 pm. You are all welcome to join us in this celebration.
Times are tough with everything that is going on right now but we can be thankful that we live and dance where we do because there are those that are going through a lot worse times than we are.
Stay Safe and hope to see you on the dance floor.

Greetings from the Toe Draggers. This is a very discouraging report, Toe’s will be canceling both of our upcoming dances, September 17th, and October 1st. Dances in November and December are currently on hold.
Toes are continuing to keep in touch through Zoom. Two of our members are recovering from break thru cases of Covid, all others are doing good as of this writing.

Regarding our club's plan to begin dancing again in September, it's looking doubtful. Some of our members (myself included) are not willing to attend large indoor gatherings right now - due to the increasing cases of the Delta variant, the hospital ICU's overflowing, the growing breakthrough cases infecting vaccinated people, and the long-term effects of Covid-19.
One of our board members has many family members infected with Covid and knew a young lady (35) who recently died from it. So is it wise to ask people to gather together to square dance at this time, or should we wait until later when it is safer? Our board meets on September 7th to decide.

Valley River Dancers
The Valley River Dancers are sad to report that because of the increase in cases of Covid-19 with the new variant we have decided that our dances are canceled until further notice
We will not be starting our Mainstream Lessons until at least mid-October or if the Covid situation continues to be bad, even January 2022. As soon as it appears to be safe to resume dancing we will do so.
For more information, contact us on our Facebook page: Valley River Dancers - Newberg or through our email address at newbergdancers@gmail.com.
Please everyone stay safe, well and healthy. Hoping to see everyone on the dance floor soon.
