A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 April 2022
President's Corner

It is said that April showers bring May flowers. Here is hoping that, with the lifting of the indoor masking mandates, April showers will bring out more dancers. While many may still not be comfortable coming out and dancing, the fact that one may choose to wear a mask or not (no judgment) will make it easier.

These last two years have been very hard on our activity. I am thankful for the callers, cuers and clubs that have persevered. We have discovered more ways to keep in contact whether through Zoom meetings, facetime, e-mail and even texting. Now let’s really get busy and support the smaller clubs that have been hit the hardest by this pandemic. Schedule an official visitation, call some friends and make a surprise visitation or, just go yourself and let them know you appreciate them.

Hope to see you in a square soon and…..

Let’s Start Dancing Again

George Hermann OFSRDC President 2021-2022

Editor's Note

I am happy to see the mask mandate be lifted. Remember that clubs and facilities are still free to implement mask requirements if they so decide -- please respect their wishes.

Coronavirus Update

The state has rescinded the mask mandate, but clubs and facilities still have the right to require masks. It's up to them.

Federation Meetings

The next Federation meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

Summer Festival

The 2022 Summer Festival will be hosted by the Interstate Highlanders and Rogue-Sis-Q Councils, and held at the Blanchet School in Salem, a nice central location. The dates are July 15-17, 2022. The featured caller and cuer are Pat Carnathan and Rikki Lobato. See http://2022.oregonsummerfest.org/ .

United We Dance – 2022 Summer Festival

Oregon’s Summer Festival is back! Summer Festival will be July 15-17, at Blanchet Catholic School in Salem. Blanchet is the perfect location. When you take the Market Street Exit in Salem, the school is only a ½ mile from I-5, east of Lancaster Drive in the heart of the Mid-Willamette Valley. It is about an hour from Portland or Eugene and within 2-4 hours for most of the rest of the state. The school is close to restaurants, hotels, shopping, and gas stations.

For those who would like to stay in Salem during the festival, there are several hotels listed on the back of the festival registration form. In addition, we have also listed a couple campgrounds. If you wish to camp on-site, there will be limited dry camping for $10 per night, available starting Thursday afternoon. Your rigs will be secure since the gates are locked every night at 10:30 pm. There is another event in the area so hotels and campgrounds are filling up quickly. Be sure to make your reservations as soon as you can.

Dancing will start in the school at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 15. Blanchet has 2 beautiful large wooden gym floors where we will be dancing Plus with Rounds and Mainstream with Rounds. We will also have a separate hall for Rounds and another hall for our Advanced dancers. In order to protect their wooden gym floors from possible damage, cowboy boots or spike heels or heels that come to a point will not be allowed on the wood floors. No exceptions. Boots and dance heels are allowed in the Round Dance Hall and Advanced Hall ONLY.

Summer Festival’s featured caller, Pat Carnathan, is from Menifee, California and started dancing with his parents in 1977. He started calling in 1980 when his club held an amateur night. Pat has been calling professionally since 1981 and now calls worldwide from Mainstream through A2. Pat met his wife nearly 30 years ago and were married in 2008. Pat has been teaching and calling for many years. Pat’s bio is on the Summer Festival Webpage (www.2022.oregonsummerfestival.org) under the Callers Tab.

Summer Festival’s featured cuer is Oregon’s own Rikki Lobato from Grants Pass. Rikki grew up watching her grandparents dance, but didn’t start dancing herself until 2011. In 2017, Rikki obtained her RoundALab license so she could “just help friends” and before she knew it she was cueing. She started teaching rounds immediately in the Fall of 2017. Rikki has been traveling the states cueing with local and national callers. She currently teaches in Roseburg and Grants Pass. Rikki’s bio is on the Summer Festival Webpage under the Cuer Tab.

In addition to our featured caller and cuer, we will be enjoying the talents of many of our Oregon callers and cuers. We are planning a complete dance program in all of the halls. There will also be several workshops and teaching sessions available for your dancing pleasure.

Your Summer Festival Committee is planning a great Summer Festival. If you haven’t registered yet, click on the “Registration Form” link at (www.2022.oregonsummerfestival.org), complete it and mail it in. You won’t want to miss this fun Festival! We look forward to calling and cueing for the dance on April 30. This is the first Fifth Saturday dance since the pandemic started. The dance starts at 7:30 with Pre-Rounds and then the square and round dance will begin at 8:00. We end at 10:00.

We know the mask mandate is over, but please wear one if you are more comfortable. We will have hand sanitizers at the front desk and on the tables. Please bring your own water as the water fountain is still turned off due to COVID. There will be no shared food. Thank you.

We look forward to calling and cueing for your dancing pleasure. We are charging $8 per person.

We are still not dancing at this time, but that may change at any time since the masking mandate is being lifted. Please check the website at cas-sd.yolasite.com to get an idea of when we might be dancing. We generally dance one to two times a month on Sundays in Hall B of the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda.

Fred Beise, our coordinator and head honcho, will update the website as soon as he knows there are enough dancers interested in resuming advanced dancing in our area. He will take a poll and then book the hall so what you see on the website is not the final word. If you are not on Fred’s email list and wish to be, please email him at fredbeisse@comcast.net .

We held two dances in the months of February and March, Feb. 11 and 25, March 11th and 25th. The first dance in March featured K.C. Curtis as caller and Neil Koozer as cuer. The second dance in March had Jim Hattrick and Jackie Gale. As always, our dancers love to dance and will welcome all dancers to the Emerald Square Dance Center and hope to keep you coming back for more.

We start off with 15 minutes of round dancing at 7:30PM and then do a plus tip at 7:45. At 8PM we have mainstream with every third tip plus until 10PM. Rounds are cued between every tip.

Since the masking mandate was still in effect on March 11, masks and/or face shields were required and there was no shared food, but on March 25th masks became optional and our club members were encouraged to bring some food to share with our guests. We were asking everyone to pay $8.00 at the door the past two month, but as we will drop back to one dance a month in April our door fee will return to $6.00 per person.

Our membership drive has begun and we hope our members will renew their membership and encourage friends to join our club as well. Membership has fallen off but we are ever hopeful that new dancers will be out as well as perhaps some former members return.

Generally we have seen anywhere from 2 to 4 squares on the floor during the pandemic since we started up dancing again last May. In time we’d like to see the numbers increase as we all know that it creates a livelier, more enthusiastic crowd, but whether it is two or four the dancing is great and our callers and cuers are great too

In April we will have Scott Zinser caller for your dancing pleasure on the 4th Friday. Connie Seaman, our caller coordinator, is hard at work on the dance calendar and has Jim Hattrick lined up for our next dance year.

See you in a square!

Yippee! We are back to dancing! We dance every Sunday from 4 - 6. Tim is a great caller and will call whatever level we can muster. We've been dancing for a few weeks. All of our dancers have had their two vaccinations and the booster. We are continuing to wear our masks. We have hand sanitizers on the tables and please bring our own water. We invite you all to join us! We're a fun bunch and have been gathering during the pandemic being masked and socially distanced just to visit and see each others' faces!

Please call our president, David, at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. Once in a blue moon we give up our dance night for the hall.

The club celebrated their 62nd birthday dance with cupcakes and visitors. George and Patty did their thing and we had a fun time. The mask mandate was lifted a day earlier so we were hoping that would bring more dancers to the hall to celebrate with us.

Our cuer, Patty, had a birthday in early March. She is one special lady. Our President’s wife, Bonnie, is recovering from a heart procedure and is gaining strength week by week. She was to come back to the club at the March dance to visit. Leonard Goss, who has been ill with Covid for several months, has come back to dance a little while he gains his strength back also.

Our next board meeting is in May, so stay tuned for news of lessons, more special dances, and whatever other news of value comes up. Marilyn

The club is progressing well with Jive lessons for the early class. We have had as many as 11 couples, including angels, at lessons. That is great news for the activity. We hope it continues.

The later Waltz class is getting into the Phase 4 moves and they get more difficult each week. We are down to about four couples for that class which is better than none at all. We appreciate those who stay for the entire evening of dancing and lessons.

We had a Sunday afternoon dance on March 13 with a theme of Daylight Savings Time.

Since the mask mandate went away two days earlier, we were hoping that the dance center will allow the same. Stay tuned for a Facebook post showing our happy faces.

March brings dues time and seeing if anybody would like to run for an office in the club. Those currently in office have been there for about eight years. We must be doing something right. Nobody seems to want to print their name to volunteer to help run the club.

We are sooo excited for the end of the Mask Mandate!! Looking forward to seeing ALL the faces again. Masks and/or face shields may still be worn by anyone who feels they need to. The addition of food items at the dances will also be welcome.

We had our Annual Wear Red Dance on the first Friday in February. Fun dance. Our third Friday dance had four squares on the floor most of the evening. March 4 there were many dancers that we had not seen in quite a while. So nice to catch up with them.

March 19 was the Celebration of Life for our beloved Danny Rickard. His smile and enthusiasm will be missed by all of us.

April 15 is our 56th Birthday Dance. Come join us to celebrate. See you all on the dance floor. Sheila Machado

We had a great fundraiser dance. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped the kids. We had six squares on the floor and raised over $1,000 for the kids. The Country Cut-Ups had a visitation and received a banner.

Our new class has about 29 students, again with the majority being youth. We end the lessons each week with a session of line dancing.

Our Teen Square Up is past the initial planning and the "rules" have been sent out. If your club has youth who might be interested, please contact Karyn Buchheit for more details. Petrina Buchheit

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
March was a happening month for the Chaps and Petticoats. Bill Sanford, our club President (& Cindy), announced they would be moving to WA (state) where Bill will manage the Rolling Bay Post Office. We nominated Officers, on March 20th, and Ian Craig (& Kathleen) agreed to step into the President position.

Chaps and Petticoats were visited by the Portland Area Council on March 4th - Scott Zinser, called and Stephanie Lozano (& John) cued. Three squares were on the floor (an increase of one square over our norm).

C&P had a square at the Silverton “Medieval” Fundraiser on March 6th. Ian Craig (& Kathleen), Caller for the youth club, wore an aluminum foil vest of ‘silver’ and daggers at his hip - he was quite decked out in the era. Julia Buchheit was the Cuer - she danced, she cued and line-danced too. The youth fundraiser was a success with over $1,000 raised and a rich six (6) squares on the floor.

On March 12th a handful of Chaps attended the Columbia River Dancers club. Normally we cannot visit as their 1st and 3rd Fridays are the same nights that the Chaps dance. Adam Christman called to six (6) squares and was their cuer, as well. We had never been to the Manor Grange in Battleground, the floor was wonderful and dancing with no mask was liberating.

Perhaps you would care to join the Chaps on April 15th when Tom Klug will open with Rounds at 7:30pm (Deb, his wife and also a Caller, will accompany him from Central Oregon) and Ian Craig calls MS beginning at 8:00pm. The Klugs have encouraged their Redrocks club to do a visitation that night - so please turn out and greet them at 7:30pm

Chaps will dance the 1st and 3rd Friday’s on: May 6th (opens PLUS with Zinser and Stephanie Lozano cues) and on May 20th, our theme is “Flags of Valor” with Darrell Kalmbach, Caller, and Dave Cooper (all the way from So. Coast Council) will cue.

See you in a square,

Betty Chipps

Classes are going well and we have 6 students. The students are dancing on Tuesdays for their regular class and they are also dancing on Thursdays from 630-8pm. The Plus workshop continues on Thursdays at 8pm. We had an SSD dance last Friday and an impromptu dance on Saturday with about 30 dancers. Everyone was excited to be "mask-less" if they chose.

Our next SSD dance is Friday, April 1st.

Our dance this coming Saturday, March 19th will be lots of fun with guest caller J Domis and cuer Bob Dingman. J is putting the word out and we are going to change it up a bit to have beginner and experienced tips. We hope lots of people will join us for the dance. If you haven't danced to J, he is a lot of fun!!! Pre Rounds at 7pm and Squares start at 730pm. We will be dark for our Saturday, April 2nd dance to help the Buckeroo's celebrate their birthday!

Boatnik is fast approaching and we are gearing up for a great festival!! Get your ribbons soon to save money on the weekend!

We are happy to see everyone's smiling face and we hope to see more of you soon!

The February TVC meeting was held via Zoom with 28 attendees. There was some encouraging news from the delegate reports, with many clubs holding successful Mainstream lessons. Oak Hills Squares has 9 students, Sunset Promenaders has 12, R Square D has 13, and Valley Squares has doubled their membership with 7 new students joining their club. Toe Draggers continues to be dark through March but plans to restart on April 15th.

The TVC’s slate of officers will have at least one vacancy, as the TVC By Laws will not allow President Mike Sinclair to run for re-election.

The TVC fifth Saturday Dance will be held on Saturday, April 30th. It is scheduled to be held at the Kinton Grange with KC Curtis calling. At this point it is not known who will cue the rounds.

The Council encourages all dancers to attend Anniversary dances. It is important to support our dancing community. Coming in April will be two anniversaries. On April 8th, R Square D's 69th anniversary dance will be held in Kelso with Craig Ambercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. Then on April 25th, the Eager Beavers are celebrating their 47th Anniversary at the Aloha Grange featuring callers Darrell Kalmbach and Jim Hattrick with cuer Jeanine Norden. The CRD’s have had a good start this year. We had our 7th anniversary, had two beginner’s dances and have a new class ready to go for our next beginner’s dance on April 24th. I will report more on our Anniversary Dance next month.

Our February 27th dance had five squares so things are starting to look a little more normal. Jim Hattrick looks better and better all the time and continues to call and cue.

As for now, we are continuing our lessons on Sundays and our Friday dances include our Spring Fling Dance on the April 1st, where we encourage everyone to think flowers and spring and dress accordingly. Our April 15 dance will be a regular dance.

Remember that we must all put on a happy face and enjoy the fun on dancing with friends you know and friends you meet anew.

Our Valentine’s Dance fell right on February 14th, and our dancers were a sea of red as they twirled around the dance floor. This was also the first day of our Plus lessons, which were open to new students and dancers who wished to refresh their Plus skills. Lessons are taught on alternating weeks by our regular club callers, Jim Hattrick and Darrell Kalmbach.

Eager Beavers is looking forward to hosting our 47th Anniversary Dance on Monday, April 25th, featuring Callers Darrell Kalmbach and Jim Hattrick and Cuer Jeanine Norden. We will have Mainstream and Rounds from 1:15 to 3:00, preceded by Pre-Plus with Level III Rounds from 12:45 to 1:15. This is the one dance each year where we dance mainstream so that dancers who are not plus dancers may obtain a requirement for the TVC Ambassador Badge. Cookies and social time will follow the dance. As of this writing, we anticipate the mask mandate will still be lifted at the time of this dance, and we continue to require proof of vaccination for the safety of our members and guests.

We dance every Monday. For up to date information see our website at http://EagerBeavers.info.

Were there really four weeks in February this year? They just blew by. The Hoedowners held two dances, on February 12th with Craig Abercrombie and Randy Lewis and again on February 26th with K C Curtis and Randy Lewis. Thank you to all who attended.

Our round lessons have been progressing. We’ve zipped through Two-step, Cha, Rumba and now learning that intoxicating rhythm S-l-o-w Two-step. Connie Clark, with the patience of Job, has been teaching us.

As for me and the rest of Hoedowners, we’re looking forward to the future! Masks will no longer be required and Hoedowners are going to start scheduling all those fun social events we’re accustomed to; dinners, painting classes, movies, pinochle, games, sports, trips, and road-side cleanup whoo-hoo. As they say in the TV business, we’ll be returning to regular programming.

Please join us for our regularly scheduled dances in April on the 9th and on the23rd. Masks and/or shields are optional.

We Can Not Wait to See You!!

The Charter members of the M&M’s will always have a place in our hearts for the two square dance icons who have recently passed. Janne Norton was a guest cuer for our young club in 1985 and soon became our Club Cuer from 1986-1992 and again from 2000 - 2003. Dick Click was a guest caller for M&M'’s in 1988 and became our Club caller from 1989 - 1993. He did a few dances for us as a “guest” up until 1999. Oh, what fun we had with Dick and Janne! They were so good at what they did; they made it look easy. They were good people and as many of you, we considered them friends. We are so happy to have had them as a part of our square dance family. They will certainly be missed but - - - how can we not think of them and smile?

R Square D’s beginner’s class that started in January has 13 students and we are encouraged by this. We are continuing plus lessons/workshops at 6:30 PM on Wednesday evenings (prior to the beginner’s class). Our club caller, Craig Abercrombie, is in Arizona until early April, so Jim Hattrick is teaching our lessons while Craig is away.

Our 69th Anniversary dance is Friday, April 8th, with Craig calling and Susan Healea cueing. Plus dancing and intermediate rounds start at 7:00, with mainstream and phase II rounds from 8-9:30. We will be dark on April 23rd so that members may attend the Yakima Spring Sashay that weekend.

R Square D dances at Kelso Senior Center, 108 NW 8th Ave, Kelso, WA. We do not require proof of vaccination but face masks are currently required (face shields are not allowed in place of masks in WA State). Hopefully, it will soon be safe enough to dance without masks!

Our club is on the move again! Our board outlined some specific dates in April, May and June to have a few workshops for our members, then a few workshops open to everyone, and then a couple of dances! But now we are waiting on contract negotiations with our grange, and of course with our caller Terry Halley and our cuer Sandra Pinion. So it's not all firmed up yet completely, but we do have a skeleton plan in place to get dancing again!

In March we graduated our class and now have 7 new members for our Club. Craig Abercrombie returns in April and is back to calling for VS. While Craig is away, Scott Zinser will fill in as our dance night caller. Mark Wheeler and Jim Hattrick filled in as our class callers.

Our April dance is on the 16th with Craig calling and Connie Clark cueing. We are planning ahead for our 73rd Anniversary dance on May 21st. We are also planning visitations with our new members so they can get in more dancing, acquaint them with other Clubs and Callers and get to know the square dance community.

Hope to see you soon at one of our dances,

Carolene Siebert
