June has come. School will wind up this month and some clubs will be finishing up their dance schedule and going “dark” for the summer. This may be the year to change that around and keep dancing because we got a late start to the dance year.
This is also the time of year that clubs look to starting their classes in September. This the perfect time to prepare for classes. Start getting flyers made up and distributed and start talking to friends and neighbors about square dancing. We need to build our dancer base. If your club dances through the summer, bring non-dancing friends to observe the dances. They will see how much fun we have and enjoy our fellowship and comradery.

Summer Festival is only 1 1/2 short months away. If you haven’t bought your ribbons yet or made your hotel reservations, I hope you take a few minutes to take care of it this month by mailing your completed registration to the address listed. The committee is busy planning a great Summer Festival in Salem July 15-17, at Blanchet Catholic School and you won’t want to miss it.
Our weekend starts with a Trail’s End Dance on July 14th, at the Salem Square Dance Center 7:30-10 pm. The square and round dance will be hosted by the ReVuNQ Round Dance Club and features Randy Lewis as the dance MC. Callers and cuers from the floor are invited to participate in the fun. The calling and cueing will be to the floor level.
Summer Festival starts on Friday at 2:00 pm with three days of continuous dancing, including workshops, introduction to different dance levels, and open mic opportunities. We have a great line up of Oregon and California callers and cuers in additional to our featured caller Pat Carnathan and featured cuer Rikki Lobato.
On Saturday, there will also be a special Educational Seminar at 4:00 pm in the Round Dance Hall discussing the function of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance clubs and United Square Dancers of America and how they can help clubs and the individual dancer. The Seminar will be led by Tim Roberts, OFSRDC Parliamentarian and other guests.
On Sunday, dancing will start in the Mainstream Hall at 9:00 am with caller KC Curtis and cuer Cathy Houston. Rikki Lobato will be conducting a Round Dance Review between 9:00-11:00 am in the Round Dance Hall. Back in our Mainstream Hall between 11:00-1:00 pm we will have a very special Trail’s Out Dance with Featured Caller Pat Carnathan and Featured Cuer Rikki Lobato. You won’t want to miss this special day of dancing before you start your trek home.
The Silver City Youth will be selling food in the cafeteria starting Friday. The menu will be posted on Facebook when it is available.
Daytime dancing will be casual dress. Evening dancing will be square dance attire. Please remember no cowboy boots or spike heels on the gym floors in the Mainstream and Plus Halls.

Weekend ribbons will be available at the door for $40 per person. If you are unable to attend the entire weekend, you can purchase daily ribbons at the door. The 71st National Square Dance Convention’s® River Rat crew is busy scurrying around making final preparations to present you a fantastic convention Down By The River.
The fun begins Tuesday night at 8 p.m. There are two dances to attend. The first is a Trail-In Dance with Tony Oxendine, Jack Pladdys, Jet Roberts, and Ted Lizotte. There’s also the Contra Energizer Dance with the Critter Du Jour dance band.
Wednesday’s festivities begin at noon with the Market on Main dance demo. The opening ceremony begins at 4 p.m. followed by early dancing at 5. Bally’s Riverfront Event Center will host dinner at 5:30 p.m. and Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m. the first official dancing of the convention starts with four different types of dancing, advanced, plus, rounds, and mainstream.
Thursday morning dancing starts at 10 and continues until 10 p.m. (longer if you want to attend the after parties). Check out the Education sessions, or just dance any way you want. Three bands will be available in the evening, including the one and only Ghost Riders Square Dance Band, which perform in Old National Events Plaza Exhibit Hall B. For Contra dancers, DoubleTree Ballroom C will feature Critter Du Jour again, with Supertrad entertaining Friday and Saturday.
On Friday attend the Bid Session in the Aiken Theatre at 9 a.m. and the Keynote Address at 11 a.m..

Silver City Squares hosted a Teen Square Up the first weekend of May at the Waldo Hills Community Club. Friday night consisted of dancing and an open mic opportunity for any youth interested. We had three squares dancing and had the pleasure of listening to many youth have their chance on the stage calling. Saturday started early with breakfast followed by competitive calling, cueing and round dancing. Mixed in with the competition, the youth lined danced and bonded with one another. Right before lunch, two squares earned their Running Bear fun badges and one super skilled square earned the designation of the Last Square Standing. After lunch they danced to mystery squares, both mainstream and plus. Even the adults on the sidelines were impressed with their dancing abilities. Awards were given to the youth who competed in calling, cueing and round dancing. Saturday night after dinner, the dancers randomly picked their roles on the dance floor and gave it their best shot in positions they weren’t necessarily familiar with. From there we were dancing three squares to more youth on the stage. The weekend was full of dancing, friendship, laughs and smiles. A big THANK YOU to the adults who made it all happen - Bob and Lois Wachter kept us fed, Ian Craig was our energetic M.C., Don Benson and Terry Haley called a few tips and Julie Stiers cued a few rounds. And of course, Karyn Buchheit organized the entire event.

A celebration of life will be held for Ralph Lambert on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the Polk County Fairgrounds, located at 520 S. Pacific Hwy, West, Rickreall, OR in building “B” which is the Arts and Craft building at 3:30pm. All are invited to come and share their special thoughts regarding Ralph’s life.
The Independence Wagon Wheelers invite anyone that would like to attend their regular dance to join them in that same hall starting at 7pm that night. If you no longer dance but wish to visit with fellow dancers or observe square and round dancing, please join us.

Janet Geiger had not been feeling well, and we hope she is much better now. Lennie Ludiker and Sheila are retired from CCCA. We thank Lennie for his many years of service and wish them well. Roger and Linda Puztler were in California for a wedding and then on a cruise on the Pacific Ocean that was proposed because of COVID. Gail Jackson had suffered a fall and cracked a bone in her leg. We wish her a speedy recovery. Cherie and Pat Cox, Sandy Harris, Tim Matteson and Christina called and cued. Mike and Camille Kious could not attend, and we wish them good health. There is so much happening these days.
Our next CCCA Fifth Saturday dance is July 30.

Since we do not have a caller, Fred finds recorded tips for us to dance to, done by national callers like Daryl Lipscomb and, Bronc Weiss and others. When we run into difficulty, he halts the recording and we go over the call that caused a problem. In general he chooses recordings at the appropriate level so we can just dance and not workshop. However, we all like to be pushed a little to improve our skills.
Right now due to the pandemic we are not sharing food or beverages, and hand sanitizer is always available. Please come join us if you are dancing at the advanced level for a fun two hours of camaraderie and good dancing.

Our last dance on April 26 was called by Scott Zinser. We always enjoy dancing to Scott’s calling. We had just over two squares dancing that night. I’m told. As there were several clubs dancing in April, people had a good variety of dancing to choose from. Buccaneers danced the first and second Fridays, Whirl-A-Ways danced the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays and Wolf Pack continued to offer dances the 1st and 4th Saturdays as well as ongoing lessons on Saturdays from 4 to 6:30PM in Hall A.
Masks are no longer required but of course can be worn as dancers choose. Hand sanitizer is always available. The drinking fountain has been turned back on, and we are encouraging our members to bring snacks to share.
In May we are looking forward to a joint dance with the Whirl-A-Ways club on the second Saturday, May 14. This will be the annual Mexican Fiesta Dance with taco bar to start at 7PM. By the time you read this it will have taken place. In June we will hold our annual Reigning Cats and Dogs dance with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing on the 4th Friday. This dance is a benefit dance for our local humane society, Greenhill, and we hope dancers will consider making cash donations or bringing donations of food or toys for the animal shelter’s homeless dogs, cats and other pets. It should be a fun night of dancing.

We had a meeting on May 15 with the election of officers and are searching for a new Vice President since ours chose not to renew their membership. We are thinking about plans for the fall and possible workshops during meetings in the fall.
We are always looking for more members to join us so if you cue or call and are in the Mid-Willamette area, seek out one of our officers and come to one of our meetings to find out what we are about. The next meeting is on the third Sunday of September at 1:30 p.m. Marilyn
We have hopes of recruiting several new people who wish to try out clogging for our beginner classes in the Fall.

Our cuer, Patty Hermann, has been in the hospital but by the time this is published, she should be well on her way to feeling better. Send your good vibes her way to stay that way. Our backup cuer, Molly Fairly, is down with no voice and a bad cough, so she needs good vibes also.
We had a club meeting in May and information about what was decided concerning upcoming dances, lessons, etc. will be reported later.
The annual Koast Krash was held in late April with 24 dancers attending. A small crowd but lots of fun. “Rock Around the Clock” was the theme with hamburgers, hot dogs, and root beer floats being served, and, of course, the “dress” of the times included rolled-up sleeves, cuffed jeans, and poodles on outfits. Two couples stepped up to chair next year’s event, so stay tuned for more info closer to the occasion.

Our next class will be announced soon. Options include slow two-step, bolero, and west coast swing. We will see what we come up with, but it is looking like slow two-step may win out. After the pace of the jive, something slower sounds nice.

We had three dances in April. So many smiles. It is great to be able to gather and to bring food to the dances again.
Elections were held and our new officers were installed on May 14. President-Bob Whaley, Vice President-Keith Waterhouse, Secretary-Vanessa Ellis, Treasurer-Sheila Machado, Membership Chair-Terry McCarty, Area Delegate-Celinda Gourley, Sunshine-Diane Webster, OFN Reporter-Sheila Machado, Newsletter Editor-Keith Waterhouse. Congratulations and thank you for stepping up to lead our club for the next year.
Our Mainstream Beginner class of 13 students is progressing at a good clip. We plan on graduating our students in the first week of June.
We invited our class to our 1st Friday Dance on May 6. Seven of them attended and they did a fantastic job. Four of them are ages 8-11. So much fun to have the young ones and their energy.
We dance year-round on the first, third, and fifth Fridays of the month. Please plan on joining us.

Our Teen Square Up had a turnout of just over three squares for Friday and Saturday!!! The kids all had a lot of fun with several of them trying out the mic with some pre-written patter figures. The youth who did singing calls were all good. Benjamin, Noah, and Phoebe were all first timers performing their singing calls outside of the class situation. Petrina and Yesenia did a duet on “Colors of the Wind”, but they refused to sign up to be judged. Thomas, as the only "experienced" youth caller signed up to be judged and did both a singing call and patter as well as teaching an obsolete call. We had four couples take part in the round dance part of being judged. None of the kids wanted to be judged as squares, but they did try doing some pre-recorded hoedowns. They did well for never trying that before.
Julia was the only youth cuer signed up. She did a memorized 2-step; hash cueing in both 2-step and waltz; and cold cueing in both 2-step and waltz. Julie Stiers tried out doing cold cueing too. Thank you for trying something new.
For the most part, our club officers will remain the same for this next year.
Karyn is scheduling some club floor time and activities for over the summer as we are officially dark in June, July, and August. We are also starting to plan for lessons in September as we are already getting calls and questions about these.
Our youth will be running the concession stand at the summer festival - stop by and say "Hello" and pick up a snack! We will have a large variety of offerings on the menu.

Our dance in May falls on National Brisket Day so what better theme for our dance than Briskets and Burgers! Come dance and enjoy a brisket burger or slider. Check out upcoming dance themes on our Facebook page and/or the flyer in the OFN. Our caller and cuer, Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell, are cruisin’ to Alaska and again to the Caribbean. They will be back to calling and cueing when they return.
We are happy to report that our snowbird president, John Templin, has returned to Oregon from Arizona.
We were sad to hear that Al Felde, long-time partner of our former caller Sandy Harris, has died. Our club sends its condolences to Sandy, her family, and her friends.

Five members of Chaps and Petticoats attended the PAC 5th Friday dance on April 29th, co-hosted by Bachelor and Bachelorettes at Abernethy Grange. Thank you to the Glidewells, for making the long journey and sharing your enthusiasm with us - our squares had fun.
Our ‘no theme’ dance on April 15th, with just two squares, was sooo much fun with Ian Craig calling and Tom Klug cueing - also Deb Klug did a guest tip. Lots of smiles made for lots of energy!
The Chaps and Petticoats last dance of the season will be Friday, June 3rd - our Club Caller, Scott Zinser, opens with PLUS at 7:30pm, calls MS 8 -10:00 PM and Julia Buchheit cues Rounds - come shake a leg! Chaps have decided to go DARK for our June 17th dance AND join the ToeDraggers’ LAST dance-party, as their Club will retire! Sad but true.
For the July and August months, Chaps and Petticoats will be DARK - we will dance with other Clubs and promote/advertise our MS lessons (introductions on Sept. 11th and 18th are FREE).

For our community, we are offering line dancing every week on Thursdays from 5:00 for beginners and 6:00 for more experienced dancers, but all are welcome to come to both hours for only $5. This is taught by Lynn Wunische. Don and Michelle Garwood are teaching Cowboy Two Step on Friday evenings from 6:30 PM. This is not round dancing two step, this is the one where guys learns to lead and gals learn to follow. Bring a partner and the cost is $7 for the two of you. In addition to our 16 Social Square Dance graduates, we welcomed 10 dancers from Happy Hoppers (who took home a banner!) and friends from Country Cut-ups, Tam Twirlers, and B&Bs. We were thrilled to see the return of several Ramblers from pre-COVID days.
We gave special recognition to our instructor Rick Hawes, who taught this class of students and kept them coming back every week for more. We also made Daryl Clendenin an Honorary Rambler to thank him for filling in several weeks when Rick was unable to teach, for his mentoring of Rick, his encouragement of our students, and his support of our club.
We asked our students what they like most about dancing with the Ramblers, and here's a sampling of what they said:

Saturday, April 30th marked the first TVC dance held in two years! Toe Draggers hosted the event at the Kinton Grange with over 5 squares attending. KC Curtis and Julie Stiers with help from three guest callers kept the floor dancing and having fun. The dancers enjoyed the evening which for one of the first times in a couple years had refreshments and visiting.
Twelve of the thirteen TVC clubs are either dancing on a regular schedule or a combination of lessons and brush-up dances. Wavesteppers in Garibaldi is the only club which has not resumed. They have lost members and are finding it difficult to attract a square. Their lessons have been postponed for lack of participation. Efforts are underway to elicit help from coastal radio stations.
Plans are underway for the TVC's annual Hahn Barn Dance. After discussion it was decided to have the dance earlier than usual, as people don't want to drive along country lanes in the dark. It will be on Sunday, August 21 at the Hahn Farm near Banks. Potluck Picnic will be held at 3 p.m. near the pond below the Barn before the dance. More details to follow.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th, you still have time to plan on attending the Valley Squares to celebrate their 73rd Anniversary Dance on the 21st, 7 to 9 pm at the Aloha Grange. Craig Abercrombie is calling and Connie Clark cueing. No masks or proof of vaccination required. See their flyer in the May OFN. The Council encourages all dancers to attend Anniversary dances. It is important to support our dancing community.

Those who are proficient continue to mainstream and those who need help can review the next three weeks. With the help of the angels present, the dancers get to really experience the fun and joy of what square dancing is all about. Our last dance had five squares of new and experienced dancers.
Hawaii calls. Our first Friday dance of June will be to honor the great state of
Hawaii. Come with that Mumu that you wore on that soft Hawaiian evening or the flowery golf shirt you like so much.
Even though it is over by 3 days, our June 17th dance will be a red, white, and blue theme dance in honor of Flag Day.

On April 9th we held the Hoedowner Appreciation Dance. What a spectacularly fun evening. The dance floor was FULL of 66 dancers. It was wonderful seeing everyone dancing and catching up on months of news. Friends seeing and dancing with friends they hadn’t seen in months/years of Covid shutdown. We had Dan Nordbye and Randy on stage that evening keeping everyone moving. We sure hope you didn’t miss it! And with our unscientific survey, we did come to a conclusion that sweets disappear from the buffet faster than carrot sticks and cheese slices.
On April 23rd Dan Nordbye once again joined Randy Lewis to keep us on our toes. We had a bit of sound issued which turned out to be electrical which turned out to be a PGE problem. Chet was on it and called the company and it as resolved. Crazy! It didn’t prevent us from dancing much and gave us more visiting and chatter time.
Our round lessons are ongoing. Stop by and join us on Tuesday evenings at 7.

Lessons are from 6.30-7.30 and mainstream dancing is from 7.30-8.30pm.
We currently have 9 people taking lessons and they are progressing nicely and more importantly having fun.
Our caller is Mark Wheeler, who is doing an amazing job teaching our new members; adapting and evolving the lessons to make them fun and entertaining.
On the first Monday of every month, we will have a themed dance from 7.30-9.00pm and we invite dancers from other clubs to attend.
On Monday June 6th our theme will be “Here comes Summer!” as we all look forward to some sunshine and less rain. We will be serving sweet treats and hope to see lots of dancers from other clubs.
We have really enjoyed having some visitors join our dances. It’s great to meet other dancers, make new friends and share some laughs. It feels as though everything is finally getting back to normal.
On that note however, we do require all dancers to be vaccinated and wearing of masks is optional.

Lessons are scheduled to wrap up with graduation on May 16th. We’ll take a break for the summer and plan to host new lessons in the fall.
In June we begin our summer schedule with dances on the second and fourth Wednesday in June, July, and August. All of them involve ice cream after the dance! June 8th is “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” with Craig Abercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. If you have a shirt promoting your favorite baseball team, please wear it. We will have root beer floats after the dance. June 22nd is our “Strawberries & Ice Cream” dance with guest caller George Hermann and cuer Patty Hermann.
All of our summer dances are casual and our hall is air conditioned. Masks are not required. We dance at Kelso Senior Center, 106 NW 8th Ave, Kelso, WA. Plus dancing with intermediate rounds are from 7-8 and Mainstream dance with phase II rounds from 8-9:30. Hope to see you in a square!

Sunset Promenaders have elected new Officers and they are as follows. Judy Schnase President, Ed Mickelson Vice President, Secretary Dianne Pratt, and Lalani Radford Treasurer. They will take over June 1st. Congrats to all of them and thank you for stepping up to take on the jobs.
We will be wrapping up lessons in June and our first dance on the 4th will be a beginners dance so everyone can bring their students and Mike will call to the floor. We should have 6 students graduate so we are excited about that.
Our normal schedule is 1st and 3rd Saturday for Mainstream, 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursday for Plus. We dance at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro near 3rd and Main. We no longer require proof of vaccination and masks are optional. See our website for further information, http://sunsetpromenaders.com.

The 1st TVC dance in 2 years was held at the Kinton Grange, April 30th. Toe’s hosted 44 dancers. It was fun to see so many dancers on the floor having a good time. KC and 3 guest callers kept it lively and Julie Stiers kept the rounds going around.
Because of declining membership and poor health, the Toe Draggers have made the difficult decision to close down operations. After 47 years, June 17 will be our final dance. It will be a free dance, with KC Curtis and Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Tami Helms cuing. Our many decorations will be offered free after the dance to those who can use them. Come help us say goodbye at the Kinton Grange, 5 ½ miles west of Washington Square, on Scholls Ferry Rd.

At one of the refreshers we held our annual General Meeting and election of new officers, in person! (Not Zoom.) President, Dale Brabham. Vice President, Carol Roos. Secretary, John Prouty. Treasurer, Edith Prouty. Dance Coordinator, Lynnea Loveberg. And TVC Reps, Charles McAuley and Michael Smith. Congratulations to them and many thanks to the outgoing officers!
In June we're having our first two official dances since before the pandemic, on the 12th and 26th, both on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 at the Tigard Grange. Our caller, Terry Halley and cuer, Sandra Pinion providing guidance. (Please check our dance fliers for the latest on masks, cost, and refreshments.)
Come join us! Because as you may remember, in July and August we are always dark, due to the heat in the grange. Also, breaking news - our board has decided to return to Friday night dances in September (2nd & 4th Fridays), the time of evening yet to be determined.

Due to a loss of students, our mainstream lessons have been canceled. We are having an Advance Workshop conducted by Randy Dibble from 8:00pm to 9:30 pm every Tuesday evening at the Chehalem Community Center. The price is $6.00 per person.
Valley River Dancers will be offering Waltz Round Dance Lessons with Leonard Snodgrass on Tuesdays 6:30pm - 8:00 pm beginning May 24th at the Chehalem Community Center. The price is $8.00 per person per class.
We invite all who are interested in attending our lessons to join us.
On April 24th we had a club meeting at which new officers were elected.
