Oregon Federation News
August 2022

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 August 2022
President's Corner

August brings the end of summer vacation, but in Oregon it usually means two more months of summer weather. Seems hard to believe that in a little over a month my term as President of the OFSRDC will come to an end. Been an interesting year as we have seen some clubs start dancing again, some decide to hold off and, at least two clubs have decided to fold. That is sad, but not unexpected given the difficulties negotiating this COVID virus. But, the good news is that a new club is starting up over in Central Oregon. Maybe that will signal a re-birth of this activity.

Another thing that will be a “shot in the arm” (pun intended) is classes starting in September. The time is NOW to be promoting your clubs and classes. USDA has a lot of good materials on promoting and marketing. You can get that information from their website at usda.org.

I try and stay upbeat and positive in this missive, but sometimes I just cannot. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Stutevoss in June. He was in my caller’s class and really helped me when I got back into calling. Others we lost in June were Royal Greenman, Joyce Brown and Ray Jones. Royal and his wife, Sharon, were very involved in square dancing in the Emerald area. Joyce stepped up and learned to cue to keep round dancing going in the Bend area. She was fun to work with. And, Ray. What can I say about Ray?? He and his wife, Zola, were involved with the federation and Mid-Winter festival for many, many years. His dry sense of humor endeared him to me.

Have a good August and stay safe.

Hope to see you in a square soon and…..

Let’s Start Dancing Again

George Hermann OFSRDC President 2021-2022

Federation Meetings

At its July 17 meeting, the Federation board passed two amendments to the By-Laws affecting our election procedures. The first changes all positions from one-year terms to two-year terms, and the second allows us to accept a slate of officers by acclamation when all positions are unopposed. These amendments must now be sent to the clubs for ratification.

The next Federation meeting will be hosted by the Portland Area Council, and will be held at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora on September 18. Click the image to fetch the flyer.

Howdy Dancers!

We have had to make a huge change in our Country Fever Dance/Campout Weekend on Oct 7-9 2022 with Jet Roberts. With his home base work schedule and trying to get an affordable flight to fit his schedule and our Club's contracted budget with him, we and Jet had to make the difficult decision to not have him as our featured Caller for this scheduled

weekend.

Jim Steele has been a fantastic caller since 1961, and instead of sharing, will now be the featured caller for the entire weekend! Everything is still the same with price, food menu and dance schedules, everyone can still bring RV's and camp right on the property as the dance hall.

Please make note that our Pre-Registration date has changed from Sept 1, 2022 to August 15, 2022 as we need to know further in advance the headcount for our food menu as we feed everyone every meal all weekend long!

Please check our revised Country Fever Flyer.

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
We look forward to our next Fifth Saturday Dance and invite you to join us on July 30, 2022 which is not too long from now.  We have a cushioned wood floor and air conditioning so we will all be comfy and have a grand time!  It's casual dress for this time of year. We are at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. Take Highway 126 to Mohawk Exit.  Turn north at the exit.  This becomes 19th and will be residential which confuses some.  Turn right on Yolanda and voila!  The hall will be on your right!

We were so sorry to lose a former CCCA member.  Royal Greenman who called for Wagon Wheelers and Diamond Circulators passed away in June.  Royal's late wife, Sharon Greenman, cued for a number of clubs.  Sharon passed away in 2019.  We also learned that Bob Stutevoss, formerly of the Portland area, passed away in Arizona.  He and Jan have been down south for some time now.  And, a cuer from Bend, Joyce Brown, also passed away.  We want to remember these wonderful folks and keep their families in our thoughts and prayers.

Kirby Goode's ashes were scattered on The Metolius River at the Whirl-A-Ways camp out.  Kirby loved square dancing, teaching square dancing and fly fishing on the Metolius.  Christina thanks the Whirl-A-Ways members who knew and loved Kirby who accompanied her and her fiancé, Jake Westra, to one of the bridges on the Metolius.  It was a beautiful and memorable experience.

Our club had its usual 4th Friday dance on June 24 with Jim Hattrick calling. This dance was our annual Reigning Cats and Dogs Dance, a benefit for Greenhill Humane Society. We raised $250.00 between our dances and the club to donate to Greenhill.

Jim did a great job of calling and cueing. Jackie Gale was under the weather and unable to join us that evening. The three squares plus in attendance had a grand time and Jim did too!

We are not dancing in July but will have our club picnic on the 10th at our member, Suzanne Peterson’s country property. We hope to see more visitors from out of town as well as more local dancers come join us on August 26 with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing. This will be our Hawaiian Luau Dance so feel free to wear your leis and Hawaiian shirts and muumuus or just come casual for summer. If it’s hot, we’ll get the A/C going!

I’d like to give a shout out to our visitors who regularly dance with us from Woodburn, Corvallis, Salem, Cottage Grove and Roseburg. We appreciate their willingness to drive so far. Of course, we must give credit to Jim Hattrick for drawing them in.

We dance every Sunday from 4 - 6 at the dance center in Springfield on Yolanda.  Tim Matteson is a great caller and will call whatever level we can muster.  We've had a few fairly new dancers who are having a great time.  We have individually wrapped snacks on hand.   We invite you all to join us!  We're a fun bunch--that's for sure. All dances are casual.

Please call our president, David Lajoie, at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing.  Once in a blue moon we are dark.

Whirl-A-Ways - Link
A lot has happened during the last several months so I will try and catch you all up.

Our caller is Mike Kious who is just getting better and better.  He's so at home and in control on the stage with his microphone.  He watches the squares carefully and makes adjustment if need be.  We're so lucky. His wife, Camille, comes with him and sometimes does a singing call with Mike.  All in the family!

Our cuer is Christina Corelli who has been cueing and teaching rounds for some time.  Her late husband, Kirby Goode, taught rounds with her.  He was the caller for Danebo Circle Eight.  Now, she teaches rounds by herself but has a right-hand man helping her - Ron Gates.  Thanks so much Ron!

Whirl-A-Ways just had their summer camp out at Camp Sherman and what FUN!  Potlucks, barbeques, soup and salad night, games, hikes, Tai Chi, you name it!  A number of the Whirl-A-Ways members who knew and loved Kirby Goode went with Christina and her fiancé, Jake Westra, to one of the bridges on the Metolius to scatter Kirby's ashes.  Kirby loved the dancers and loved fly fishing on the Metolius. That was a meaningful and beautiful experience.  Christine Beneda was in charge of the camp out and did a marvelous job!  Thank you Christine!

We want to thank Michael Burt who was our president for the past several years.  Ya dun good, Michael!  It was a challenging time with the pandemic and all, and Michael did a great job keeping us all in the loop and on the same page.  Todd Jensen has graciously volunteered to be our president and has already taken care of things.  Thanks Todd.

We look forward to our summer picnic out at John and Carolyn Pape's in August.  Thanks for hosting once again John and Carolyn.

We remember Sue (Rundall) Nelson with much love.  Sue and Terry danced for a number of years up north and with clubs in our area and now Whirl-A-Ways.  Sue battled cancer and MS for a number of years. She trained their dog, Kona, and was able to attend a number of dog shows.  Terry married Leah Firth this past year.  He thought he'd never find love again after Sue's passing.  Leah and Terry are a perfect match and at the right time!  We are thrilled for them.  Another Whirl-A-Ways member, Jan Bolton, officiated their wedding in Arizona.  Wow!

We remember with much fondness, Ray Jones, who passed away recently.  Ray and Zola were Randall Award recipients in 2017.  They were honored for all of their work at every level of square dancing from the local and club level to area and state level and national level as well.  They worked on the 43rd National Convention held in Portland, Oregon in 1994 and the 54th in 2005.   Ray and Zola were tireless workers, and we are all so sad for Zola's loss and ours as well.  Ray was a dynamo who listened well and spoke with honesty and clarity about what was going on.  He knew what was going on at every level and how best to keep things going smoothly.  Ray and Zola were Mid-Winter chairs back in 1988.  "Our Fiesta's Great in 88!" We miss Ray so much and keep Zola in our hearts and prayers along with her daughter, Julie and her family.  Julie danced with the Emerald Teens.

There are so many members willing to take on tasks for our club.  That makes me proud!  Thank you one and all!

Club members and families met on June 11 at the home of Jennie and Nate Ramer for a BBQ potluck and meeting. So much fun was had by all that another BBQ may be held the first part of August.

Many of the members attended the Summer Festival July 15-17 and had a great time reconnecting with old friends and meeting new friends.

Our club campout is scheduled for August 30 to September 1 at Champoeg Park. A potluck will be held the evening of August 31.

New dancers’ lessons will be started on September 11 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. with Leonard Snodgrass at the McMinnville Grange. Sept. 17 will be our first dance for the new season at the Grange with Leonard calling and Sandra Pinion cuing.

Cherry City Cloggers - Link
The Cherry City Cloggers have been so excited to finally once again be able to do public demonstrations. Our demos are our main way of recruiting people who are interested in learning to clog. By the time this article goes to print, we will have performed at World Beat, Marion County Fair, and the Salem Art Festival.  We hope to have several interested people by fall. Whether or not we have a beginner class in the fall, however, is going to depend on whether we are able to recruit an instructor as well. If anyone reading this is a clogger and would be interested in instructing or knows of someone who would be, please contact Maryellen Ramseyer at ramseyer_mary@hotmail.com.  We hope to be starting our beginner class in September.

In the meantime, if there is anyone who has already taken lessons and is looking for a place to clog, we would love to have you join us. We still offer three class sessions:

one at 4:00 p.m. class, a 5:30 p.m. class of beginners and the intermediate/advanced class that starts at 6:30.  We'd love to see you there!

The club went dark for the second dance in June due to illnesses. The first dance in July was at the Salem Square Dance Center with George Hermann calling and Leonard Snodgrass as a guest cuer. Molly Fairly had previous commitments.

We are dark in August due to the Polk County Fair taking over the fairgrounds the first two weeks of August to set up for the fair, host the fair and then take everything down and put away.

We will have our annual meeting in August to certify our elections, make some future dance plans, get dues paid, and get the club membership booklet prepared.

Lessons will start in September 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem Square Dance Center.

The club was dark the last three Thursdays in June so some members could travel, and it was also a financial decision to go dark during that time.

We started out on July 7 with a regular session and on July 14 we hosted the Trails In dance for Summer Festival. A great way to start off the Festival weekend.

As time goes by, we will start talking about fall lessons worked around Randy’s hip surgery in October. Stay tuned for more details as more plans are made.

It's finally starting to feel like summer. Our hall is air conditioned so please come join us for our 5th Friday Plus Dance July 29. August 5 and 19 are our Regular first and third Friday Dances.

We all had a great time at Summer Festival right here in town. Thanks to all who assisted in any way with set-up and tear down.

Our new dancers have enjoyed getting floor time and increasing their skills. Thank you all for the warm welcome to the five youth dancers that have joined our club as well as the five adult dancers.

Randy Dibble's Plus Workshop continues Wednesday evenings throughout the summer from 6:30-8:30 p.m. $8.00 per dancer. See you on the dance floor.

Silver City Squares
We danced on our trailer at the Mt. Angel 4th of July Parade. We had enough for a square and some to switch in and out.

There is still a chance to dance with us this summer! We have been averaging two squares at our dances this summer, and so far, our hall has stayed comfortable - windows, doors open and fans going. If the upstairs gets too warm, we can dance downstairs where it is cooler.

Julia is partway through waltz lessons and has 15 students. She is planning to be finished by the first week of September.

We have started planning for square lessons in September and are hoping for a good turnout again. Several parents and family of our youth have indicated that they will come.

Willamette Squares offers an apology for the late cancellation of their June dance. It was cancelled due to many illnesses and health related problems. However, we are back on track for July, and our regular dance, same time, same station, will take place.

We hope to see many of our fellow square dancers at Summer Festival. By being held at Blanchet in Salem, it will be close by for Willamette Valley residents to attend.

John and Doris recently enjoyed a week’s road trip equally divided between Reno, Nevada and Arcata, California. Bruce and Judy are still cruisin’ here and there. We can’t keep track of them! We look forward to seeing you all in a square!

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
Four Chaps & Petticoats dancers attended the Breast-Cancer Benefit at Columbia River Dancers on June 5th.  All had GREAT fun dancing and enjoyed fun activities:  four Callers, three Cuers, Quilt Raffled, wonderful foods/desserts Silent Auction (competition was fierce) and Split-the-Pot Raffle.  More than $3K was earned for the Benefit - made Melissa James very happy to celebrate her Birthday with such memories.

The Toe Draggers held their LAST Dance (ever) on June 17th, very sad, but WOW…what a well-attended, full-of-excitement dance!  The Chaps and Petticoats went DARK to attend (there were eight of us) and we’re sure glad we didn’t miss it - at one point eight squares were on the floor (plus many more attendees sitting out).  We saw dancers we had not seen in ages, and some we never met before.  There were two Split-the-Pot Raffles and after announcements, a spiral, dual-circle was formed to say goodnight.  Job WELL-DONE everyone, we’ll see you in a square!

Our “food-booth” fundraiser plans fell through this year.  Thus we decided to promote Maplewood Grange and the Chaps & Petticoats by jointly opening the Grange on Sunday nights in August to community groups (by reservation only).  The objective is to meet more people in our community, introduce our Grange and broaden our horizons to other happenings in our community.

Did you enjoy the Summer Festival weekend?  At the time of this OFN publication, Chaps and Petticoats are also looking forward to more summer activities - will we see you on:  July 22 at “Dancing under the Stars” in Newberg (6th/Howard) Tennis Courts (scuffed shoes OK), July 29 at Milwaukie Community Center for the PAC 5th-Friday Dance (jointly sponsored by RCD), and August 17th (5-6pm) Chaps performs at the Clackamas County Fair, Main Stage.  On August 21 the Hahn Barn starts with potluck at 3:00pm (at the pond) and dancing at the Barn after (watch the temperature).

Come September the Chaps and Petticoats will host, at Maplewood Grange, two FREE Introductory MS Lesson nights from 5-7pm on:  September 11 and September 18.  Our Dance nights will remain the first and third Fridays each month beginning September 16th with a 'Trails-In' Dance night which precedes the State Federation SAT/SUN, July 17-18 Meetings & Dance (find the Flyer on page-front of the OFN).

Many of our club members attended the Toe Draggers last dance. We were sorry to hear that it was their last dance, but pleased to see the good turnout. Please keep supporting your square dance community, as this is the only way to keep our favorite pastime going. Many clubs are struggling.

Last month, even in the 90 plus degree heat, our hall at Milwaukie Community club stayed at a constant 72 degrees. We were surprised and pleased that our air conditioner is working so well and our hall was very comfortable.

Many clubs are going dark during the summer but River City Dancers continue to dance twice each month. We have changed our dance nights to second and fourth Saturdays now and everyone is welcome to join us. We love visitors.

Our club will be hosting the PAC dance on the fifth Friday night July 29. It will be at our hall at Milwaukie Community Club at 42nd and Jackson in Milwaukie. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling and Tami Helms cuer. Please come join us. It should be a fun evening.

The June TVC meeting was held via Zoom with 25 attendees. Zoom will remain the meeting method for the remainder of the year. New president, Ursula Kuhn was unable to officiate as she was busy vacationing in Barbados, so vice president Linda and K.C. Curtis officiated. The TVC Directory for 2022-2023 is in the process of being edited and printed. We will need to know how many to print so clubs will be asked to provide the number of copies they wish to have.

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the fifth Saturday dance July 30th, It will be held at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro form 7pm to 10pm, mainstream with every third tip plus. Featured caller for this event is Scott Zinser with Connie Clark cueing. Square dance attire is admired but not required, casual wear is fine.

The TVC's annual Hahn Barn Dance will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, August 21 at the Hahn Farm near Banks. The Potluck Picnic will be slightly different this year. It is suggested that you bring your own meal and a dessert to share. It begins at 3 pm near the pond below the Barn before the dance. Round dancing, cued by Tami Helms begins at 4:30 followed by Darrell Kalmbach calling squares from 5 to 7pm. Mainstream with every third tip plus.

The Columbia River Dancers will be dark for dances in July and August. BUT, we will continue to hold classes on Sundays during the summer. We will do round dance level 2 lessons from 5-6 PM (currently 2-step). Beginning square dance lessons will be from 6-7:30 or so depending on how fast skills are acquired. The goal is to have a beginners dance the last Sunday of each month. Since our classes have been around two squares this has been possible so far.

The only reason we would cancel class is when it is too hot. While our current grange has proven to be cooler than our old grange we have made the decision that if the outdoor temperature will be 90 degrees at 5 PM classes will be canceled.

Lastly, even though we will be dark it does not mean will not be dancing. We recognize that at this time in square dance history we all survive together or sink together. My wife and l will be visiting and dancing and we encourage each member of every club to do the same.

August 10th is our “Back to School” dance, with Craig Abercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. We will collect supplies and donate them to a local school, as we have done for many years. Root beer floats will be served at the break.

“Summer’s Last Hurrah” will be Wednesday, August 24th, and we will serve ice cream sundaes after the dance. Craig will call and cue this dance.

Members are looking forward to our August club meeting that will be held at Pat Faires’ home on Mayfield Lake. We will BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs and pot luck the other food. It’s always a fun day!

Our summer dances are casual and our hall is air conditioned, so join us for fun dancing! Plus dancing and intermediate rounds from 7-8 PM and mainstream with phase II rounds from 8-9:30.

Sunset Promenaders - Link
The new Sunset Promenaders Delegates to the TVC are Tom & Janice Sminia. We thank Floyd Wolf and Judy Schnase for their service for last year.

The club is continuing to have both Mainstream and Plus dances and that includes during the summer as the hall has good air conditioning.

Our Plus dances attendance have been smaller than before the Pandemic but hopefully will increase with time. We are thankful for a lot of visitors, we really appreciate them, thank you.

Our Mainstream dances are about three squares and we have not had many visitors. We also are not getting all our members to the dances either, some of our pre-Covid-19 members have not even paid their dues. All of this said we are not having enough income to break even; lucky we have a good reserve to fill in. We did not have a good set of lessons this year, so we need to get out and get some more people interested in square dancing. We are going to add a Plus tip into our dance schedules again.

At both our Plus and Mainstream dances, the club is now having a social time with finger food and coffee after the dances. This is to hopefully get more dancers to the dances and help improve communication between the members. We are also going to organize visitations to other clubs to see if we socialize with them and hopefully get more visitors to our dances. We really do appreciate visitors.

The Promenaders had 11 members at the Last Toe Draggers dance, it was fun, very loud and crowded like some of our dances in the past. There were about 90 dancers in the Kinton Grange with K.C. Curtis, Darrell Kalmbach, Terry Halley, and George Hermann calling, with Tami Helms, Sandra Pinion, and Connie Clark cueing.

Tri Squares - Link
Tri Squares is moving! Big changes ahead for us, because after many decades in Tigard we have signed a new contract with the Kinton Grange! So now you will find us on Scholls Ferry Road (near the intersection with Roy Rogers Road.) But -- not until fall because we're dark until September.

In July we kept our dancing shoes on by visiting the River City Dancers and the Valley River Dancers, "Under the Stars". (Well... tennis shoes for the "Stars" dance because of the sandy outdoor tennis court!),

In September (at Kinton) we'll begin Sunday afternoon lessons again - please check our OFN and website flyers for dates. Also in September our first two dances will be with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion: on September 9th "Aloha! Welcome to Our New Home!" and on September 23rd our anniversary dance "Celebrate Good Times!" Please come celebrate our new home with us!

Valley River Dancers - Link
Our June dances both had two squares attending. All dancers present were also Plus dancers so Randy Dibble called Plus at our Mainstream dance, and after 10 p.m. there was an Advanced tip. Leonard Snodgrass, our cuer and round dance instructor, cued several tips just especially for our beginning Waltz class so the students could get some floor time. It was a lot of fun to see the students out on the floor smiling and actually dancing!

Our Beginning Waltz lessons, taught by Leonard Snodgrass on Tuesdays at 6:30-8 p.m. at the Chehalem Community Center continue. If you have completed beginning waltz classes before, come for refresher lessons. We are just past the half way point so it’s a good time to jump in. Cost is $6.

Our Advanced workshop continues on Tuesday evenings at the Chehalem Community Center, 8-9:30 p.m., called by Randy Dibble. Cost is $8.

As of this submission we have not yet had our “Dance Under the Stars” special dance, July 22nd. On stage will be Darrell Kalmbach calling Mainstream with a half hour of Pre-Plus beginning at 7:30 p.m., and Leonard Snodgrass cueing a mix of rounds. Instead of dancing at the tennis courts we will be squaring up at the Newberg Les Schwab parking lot, 110 Sitka Avenue.

Another reminder that our 5th Saturday Advanced dance, July 30th, is cancelled.

We will be dancing in August on the 2nd and 4th Fridays—come and dance with us!

We are planning for Mainstream lessons Tuesday evenings beginning September 13th. Cost and times determined soon.

Valley Squares - Link
Our June 18th dance was a lot of fun with two squares. Our new Members are making our dances and visitations a lot of fun for everyone. A majority of our members attended the Toe Draggers last dance on June 17th. So sad to see them close. The dance was lots of fun and had a very crowded floor. Thank you Toe's for all your years of square dancing, we will miss you.

Our August 20th dance will be Summer Casual, if you want. We invite you to join us and help make our dance more fun, the more the merrier for everyone. Mark Wheeler will be our caller and Connie Clark our cuer. 7 to 9:30 pm, Mainstream with every third tip Plus. Air conditioned.

Take care and Dance, Dance, Dance,

Wave Steppers - Link
Big changes! We are dancing again. Our new club caller is Lane Clem and Terry Halley has been filling in when Lane is busy elsewhere. Our radio advertising to find dancers or students for lessons may have helped. The dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Elks Lodge in Tillamook. We are using the hall upstairs. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org.
