October 2022

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 27 October 2022
President's Corner

Hello everyone. I would like to share the following statement with you.

To further the common good and general welfare of the people of its communities and to bring about civic betterment and social improvements in the education, promotion and encouragement of square dancing and its related activities, without regard to race, creed, sex, age, national origin, or religion.

This is our purpose, the reason that we as square & round dancers have established the Oregon Federation organization. As President, I want to emphasize that everyone in our organization is a volunteer. Each of us have talents that we can share to accomplish our purpose. I would like to thank all of those who have done that, and I hope that you will continue help me to keep our organization thriving.

As time goes on, the ways that we accomplish this purpose may change. I am asking you as members of our federation to let me know what changes you believe may need to be made. As always there will be problems to solve, however, there may be successes to share as well. I would like to have both. This will allow me to determine what you as members believe deserves my attention while I am president.

One thing that I want to do is, take a thorough look at our By-laws & P&P’s. Both documents are ‘living’ documents. As our organization evolves, we may need to shed some things no longer needed and to add new ways of accomplishing our purpose. If you believe that you can help me with this, please let me know, my name is in the book.

Happy Dancing,
Timothy Keck
President, OFSRDC

Editor's Note

A new slate of Federation Officers took over at the State Meeting on September 18. We had a lot of opinions expressed on a variety of important topics at this meeting. When you see an officer or a delegate, be sure to thank them for giving up their time for the benefit of Oregon's square dancers.

Federation Meetings

Your Federation Executive Board met in Aurora on September 19, where the new officers for the 2022-23 year took over:

The two proposed amendments to the Federation By-Laws were both passed by the clubs by an overwhelming margin, which means 2nd Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Membership will now have two year terms. The 1st VP/President/Past President sequence will remain a 3-year commitment.

The next Federation meeting will be hosted by the Emerald Empire Council, and will be held at the Line County Fairgrounds on January 29, 2023, in conjunction with Mid-Winter Festival.

Randall Award Nominees

We have three nominees for the Randall Award this year. Your council delegates will be casting their votes, and the winner will be announced at Mid-Winter Festival. Click here to read the biographies.

We are back to calling, cueing and teaching squares and rounds. It's been a LONG two years, and we've all managed to stay healthy. Whew!

Roger Putzler will teach squares starting October 4 at 7:00 and Plus at 8:30. Tuesdays. This is at the Dance Center in Springfield. The floor is cushioned!

Christina Corelli will begin Waltz Basics October 3 at 7:00. Because of the late start this class will be an hour and a half or more long each Monday. No intermediate classes until January.

Cuer Christina Corelli recently got married to Jake Westra. Hopefully she'll get him interested in square dancing! That would be fun!

Our next Fifth Saturday Dance is December 31, but that is usually asked for by a local club. Can you believe it'll be 2023! The Fifth Saturdays in 2023 include April 29, July 29, September 30, and December 30.

We are continuing to stay safe with our members being vaccinated, etc. We continue having hand sanitizers available as well.

Welcome back to calling, cueing, teaching and dancing!

Keep on calling and cueing!

Christina Corelli

We continue to dance twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Sundays when we can muster a square. Lately we are just shy of two squares and wish we could find a few more so we’d have two squares on the floor and not have so many have to sit out waiting their turn. We dance with cards so everyone does get a turn, and we keep every other break short.

We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield from 1:30 to 3:30 in Hall B which is located behind the square dance center so please drive around and park behind to find us.

We mostly dance to recorded tips by national callers with Fred Beisse wearing a stop watch on his wrist so he can stop the music when we break down and then be able to go back to review where the problem was. Most everyone is back up to speed at this point after having not danced for the most part of two and a half years.

On Sunday, October 30, we are hoping to have Kris Jensen from New Mexico call for us. We all love Kris and her calling and we hope we can get enough people out and that she can make it.

Please come join us if you are in the vicinity or within driving distance. First check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for our schedule of dances and then call Fred at 458-221-3564 to make sure we are dancing on that particular day.. We would love to have you in a square!

We continue to dance on the fourth Friday of every month unless it falls on a holiday weekend or there is a festival taking place nearby. Jim Hattrick is our caller and Jackie Gale is our cuer. We enjoy dancing to their calls and cues and invite everyone to come dance with us and enjoy them too.

We dance at the Emerald square Dance Center in Hall A from 7:30 to 10PM. We start with a plus tip, then 15 minutes of rounds and then mainstream with every 3rd tip plus until 10.

As many of you know, Jim Hattrick took a bad fall and broke his hip. He hopes to be calling soon, but there is the possibility we will need to have a substitute for our dance on September 23. Please check our website for more information as the time draws closer (I am assuming the Oct. OFN will have been published before then). We wish him a speedy recovery.

Hope to see you in a square soon,

We dance every Sunday from 4 - 6 at the dance center in Springfield on Yolanda. Tim Matteson is a great caller and will call whatever level we can muster. We've had a few fairly new dancers who are having a great time and some who have indicated they'd love to join Spin Cycle Squares! Yippee! We have individually wrapped snacks on hand. We invite you all to join us! We're a fun bunch that's for sure. All dances are casual.

Our member-at-Large, Christina recently got married to Jake Westra! Congratulations!

Please call our president, David Lajoie,at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. Once in a blue moon we are dark.

It's been a long two-years for Whirl-A-Ways! We are happy to be back dancing at the hall in Springfield!

John and Carolyn Pape hosted a successful picnic/potluck at their beautiful place in east Springfield. Thank you John and Carolyn! Kathy Jensen provided door prizes which included a few she painted. We've got a lot of talented people in our club! Thanks Kathy!

Dances started in September. We dance the second and third Saturdays. Our first dances for the new dance season were September 10 and17. Mike Kious is the caller. Christina Corelli is the cuer. Please come and join us! 7:00 is Plus and then Mainstream and rounds begin at 7:30.

Roger Putzler will begin new dancer lessons October 4 at 7:00. Plus lessons will be at 8:30 on Tuesdays. We encourage angels to attend. Thank you! This is open to all: families, singles and couples. There is a family rate for families with 2 or more kids.

Christina Corelli will begin teaching Waltz Basics October 3 at 7:00. There will be no intermediate classes until January because of the late start this fall.

Our cuer, Christina, married Jake Westra recently. We wish them a long and happy marriage! Jake and Christina attended the Whirl-a-Ways camp out in June. Jake loved it and is looking forward to the next one! He can't wait! Jake's brother Nate and his wife, Ruxie, danced with Wagon Wheelers a number of years ago.

All dances and classes will be at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield.

Happy dancing!

Six of our members enjoyed camping at Champoeg State Park Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. We had beautiful weather, and it was cooler by the river. On Wednesday night, we were joined by three more members, five guests, and three dogs for a great potluck and games.

Our lessons began on September 11 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the McMinnville Grange. September 17 was our first dance for the season. We have air conditioning at the Grange, so come join us on the third Saturday of the month.

The Corvallis Squares met over Labor Day weekend for a barbecue and meeting to kick off the dance year! We are excited for lessons starting at the end of September, taught by Sandy Harris.

We will have two dances in October, on the second and fourth Saturdays, and the Oct. 8 dance is at a different location than usual: the Corvallis Community Center (formerly called the Senior Center). Our Halloween dance will be at our usual location at the First Congregational church. There is plenty of parking at both locations. We will update our protocols as time and circumstances lead, but currently vaccinations are required; masks are optional. Of course, if dancers feel ill, it is best to stay home—we would love to have you but need to be safe!

The club met for their annual meeting and elected the officers, discussed the changes to the Federation By-Laws and voted on them. We also discussed moving our annual meeting to the spring so we can be on time for directory information, lesson plans for the fall, and getting ready to fill out the insurance renewal papers that come in September. The officers will be installed on September 3, before our regular dance.

We honored some members who have given of their time over an extended amount of time. The new Honored Members are Barbi Ashwill, Roger and Linda Bergerson, Pete and LaVerne Bennett, and Ron Schmit. (See the September OFN for their pictures.)

The contracts for the caller, George Hermann, and the cuer, Molly Fairly, were renewed for another year. Molly’s contract went from substitute status to full time status.

The flyer for lessons has been updated with the new membership person’s contact information and posted on Facebook and in the OFN. Another meeting will be held to set up special dances and any other special events that need to be discussed.

The club will start tango lessons on November 3, providing Randy has recovered sufficiently from his hip replacement surgery that he had scheduled on September 12. Until then, we are dancing from 7:00-9:00 p.m. every Thursday. We will dance after his surgery, with maybe one substitute the week of his surgery, but after that he says he can sit and cue since his mouth is not being worked on.

Randy had a birthday on August 31, and we surprised him with cake and cards the next night, our regular dance night. We are hoping that he was surprised and pleased.

We will start thinking about New Year’s Eve soon since we have the hall reserved.

Greetings to all dancers.

We had two great dances in August, even in the heat. September 14 started our Mainstream lessons from 6:30-8:00 pm. A new Plus Workshop then begins from 8:00-9:30 pm. Randy Dibble is the Caller Instructor for both lessons.

September gives us three dances for the month. Sept 16 was our Annual Corn and Cluck Dance and this year the Chicken and corn on the cob were BACK with all sorts of other delicious treats. Also, wind-up chicken races happened again this year. September 30 is our 5th Friday Plus dance.

October 7 is our 1st Friday Dance in October. Several members of the club and our caller Randy Dibble will be attending the Seaside Sashay October 21-22, 2022, so we will be DARK on the third Friday. Come join us in Seaside! See you on the dance floor.

Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares had a nice visitation from Salem Swingin’ Stars. We are looking forward to our Oktoberfest dance for the month of September. In October, our birthday dance will take place Sunday afternoon October 23. That means we will be dark for our regular dance night, Saturday, October 22. We will also be dark in December due to a conflict with Christmas Eve and in January due to a conflict with Mid-Winter. That means our regular dance in November will be our final dance for the year!

Bruce and Judy are still cruisin’ and our club president, John, will be in Ireland for the rest of the month. Come join us for Oktoberfesting and get your fill of Octoberfest sausage. Hoping to see you in a square!

Our lessons are off to a good start. So far, we are under the unique situation where all our students are composed of people who were once members of other Portland clubs. All they really need is a refresher, enabling us to move through lessons very quickly and finish well before Mid-Winter. If you know someone else who just needs a refresher, maybe you could steer them our way? Once again, our lessons are on Wednesday evenings at 6:30. Our regular dances will follow at 7:30, only on 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesdays.

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
Wish to express a big thank you to the Hahn’s and crew who, despite the high heat, provided a much-enjoyed dance, for Chaps and Petticoats, on August 21st in Banks.  A special appreciation goes out to Darrell Kalmback and Tami Helms for staying hydrated, despite the hot stage, and keeping our dances lively.

Did you get to enjoy the Clackamas County Fair (AUG 16-20) or dance at the Oregon State Fair (AUG 30 & SEPT 3rd)?  The Chaps & Petticoats provided square dance entertainment at the County Fair, in Canby, on August 17 and Scott Zinser did an audience teach, on stage, with two squares … lots of smiles were seen on the youth dancers especially.  Thank you, everyone, who volunteered for this event.  The Grange Cookies and the vendor foods were yummy as well.

Some of the Chaps and Petticoats attended the “Labor Day” weekend event in Port Orford at the Beachcombers’ Cove.  What a jam-packed weekend of fun, with approx. 100 in attendance.  Friday, we had a BBQ, danced squares called by KC Curtis and Dave Cooper was accompanied by Ron (from Central Oregon) on fiddle during some Rounds.  Saturday morning began with dancing-in-the-surf, guys made pies in the afternoon, potluck dinner was served, KC Curtis was on harmonica and our entertainer calling squares, and Cooper (with Ron) cued  lively “fiddle-stepping” Rounds while the baked-pies and Kathy Roberts' hand-crafted gifts, were part of a silent-auction fundraiser.… sweet!

Wait, wait … there’s more:  Sunday opened with Beachcomber’s breakfast (pancakes/eggs), dinner was potluck, Terry Halley called squares and challenged us with “Grand Blossom” and what was dessert? ... Pie with home-made ice-cream!.  Monday morning was the send-off:  Cinnamon rolls served … Thank you, to the Coopers and crew.

Chaps and Petticoats will continue SD lessons at Maplewood Grange each Sunday, starting September 25th.  Just as a precaution, please do call (503) 806-5654 to confirm the lessons (as turn out, after COVID’s reign, is still unknown).

Happy Feet,

We danced all summer every second and fourth Saturday in the comfort of our air-conditioned hall and continue to do so each month.

We began our square dance lessons on September 18 at 5:30 . They are for one and a half hour each and will be held weekly. Our round dance lessons will begin October second. They are $6 each, or you can save money by purchasing 12 lessons in advance for $60.

Dust off your shoes and come dancing with us. You are always welcome. The fun begins as soon as you walk in the door.

Our first night of classes went well with 9 new dancers and 3 squares on the floor. We hope for some more new dancers and angels at our last open night on Sept 20th. We look forward to having a great group ready to learn! No dances in September and we were disappointed that the Rogue Valley Rendevoux was canceled. We look forward to attending that festival in 2023.

Our October dances should be a lot of fun!! On Oct 1st we have J Domis calling & Elaine Funk cueing. The fun starts at 7pm. J is an energetic and fun caller who has a network that will follow him to his dances. We are making this dance open to both experienced dancers like normal and J is also sending out invites to his groups to come and join us as well. The last time J did a dance we had 75 dancers in the hall!!! Hoping for a similar turnout!! Elaine always does a great job cueing - so it should be a wonderful nite!! Oct 15th we have Chuck & Sarge. We invite you to "Don't Be A Grouch, Come Dance With Us!" Put on your smile and join us for a great time. Jumping ahead a little bit to our 55th birthday dance on December 3rd---we are excited to have Randy Dibble calling our dance for us. He is always a treat to get to dance to!! Please join us for lots of fun!!

We have lots of fun dances happening the rest of the year - and more scheduled for 2023. Don't forget to pre-register for an amazing Memorial Weekend for our Boatnik Festival with Joe Saltel & Randy (Marie) Preskitt!!! Going to be a heck of a party!!!

See you on the dance floor!

Tualatin Valley Council - Link
The TVC monthly meeting in August was officiated by Ursula Kuhn, TVC President, and held via Zoom. There were 19 attendees discussing various topics including the upcoming vote requested by the Federation to amend the Federation By-Laws. The delegates were reminded to advise their clubs of the timeliness of the request. Ballots need to be received by the 15th of September, prior to the State meeting on the 18th.

While the temperature was a little on the high side, the annual Hahn Barn dance was a success with nearly nine squares of attendees. Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms called and cued a lively dance. Another of the meeting discussions was the possible changing of the Barn dance from August to September, maybe being a little cooler. The TVC Directories for 2022-2023 were distributed to the clubs at the dance.

There are two Council club sponsored annual events occurring this month: Octoberfest, October 14-15, hosted by R Square D in Kelso Washington; and Seaside Sashay, October 21-22, hosted by the Sunset Promenaders & Hayshakers. There is additional information in the respective club reports below as well as "Special Dances" flyers.

The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Tri-Squares 24th Anniversary Dance at the Kinton Grange on September 23rd and the Sunset Promenaders 37th Anniversary Dance on October 1st at the Hillsboro IOOF hall. Both dances begin at 7pm.

Along with just being dark for the month came the bad news that our caller, Jim Hattrick, fell at home and broke his hip. As I write this he is still in the hospital. His fall comes on top of surgery that he had on his hand. Needless to say we are in a state of uncertainty. We have contacted a number of callers, many of which have commitments already.

I encourage everyone to say a prayer for his recovery. In the meantime, folks can go to our website columbiariverdancers.com to get the latest information on our dances and on updates about Jim.

Jim has had a few health problems in the past and has come through in flying colors. The club is sure with our prayers it will be the same this time.

Eager Beavers decided to postpone our annual picnic from August to September due to the heat. However, we are blessed to have air conditioning for our dances at the Aloha Grange, where we average three to four squares. Our club is delighted to have welcomed five new members in the past couple of months!

We dance Plus and Rounds every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00, including holidays. Our excellent teams on the stage include caller/cuer Jim Hattrick, alternating with caller Darrell Kalmbach and cuer Jeanine Norden. As Jim is currently recovering from a fall, Craig Abercrombie is scheduled as our caller/cuer for the Labor Day dance. We send prayers and best wishes to Jim and his family. Though most of our dancers are vaccinated, we currently do not require proof of vaccination and masks are optional. For current information, please see our website at http://EagerBeavers.info.

In August we had fairly good attendance, 3 to 4 squares, at our mainstream dances on August 6th and August 20th. Mike Stout called, and Julie Stout cued both those dances. On August 21st, the TVC picnic and barn dance was held at our members Bette and Gary Hahn's farm. There were 71 dancers. Darrell Kalmbach called, and Tami Helms cued. A great time was had by all!

October will be an especially busy month for our club as we are co-hosting the Seaside Sashay Square Dance Festival. The dance will be held at the Seaside convention center on Friday, October 21st and Saturday, October 22nd. Callers will be Steve Noseck & Randy Dibble; Debbie Taylor will be the cuer. We hope you will sign up and join us! For more information, call Gary Clark at 503-310-3538.

We will have a special dance on October 1st as it is our 37th anniversary! Darrell Kalmbach will be calling, and Tami Helm's will be cueing. We are planning to have a lasagna dinner at 6:00 before the dance that night. We'd love to see you there! October 15th will be our regular mainstream dance with guest caller Scott Zinser and cuer Tami Helms.

Tri Squares - Link
August was super busy for Tri Squares because we moved our club to the Kinton Grange on Scholls Ferry Road, about 5 miles west. Also we manned an informational booth at the Tigard Farmers Market to advertise fall lessons at the Kinton Grange. And adding to all that were two visitations, to the River City Dancers in Portland and Valley River Dancers in Newberg, plus our annual laid-back picnic on the hill, at Sherwood's Snyder Park - always so relaxing!

In October, since Kinton Grange was already booked up for our first dance night, we'll have fun in Aloha visiting the Hoedowner's instead. And for our second dance night Friday, October 28th, please put on your best Halloween duds and join us for "Come As You Aren't!" with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion. Note: our new starting time is earlier this year -- 7:00 PreRounds and 7:30 for Mainstream, Rounds & Plus. ($7 donation. Masks are optional but will be required if the CDC recommends indoor masking that week. We'll have some extras on hand.)

Mainstream lessons, taught by Randy Dibble, begin Tuesday evenings, September 13th, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Chehalem Community Center. Cost is $6. The first 2 lessons are free, and dancers can join the class as late as September 20th. The duration of the class is approximately 10 weeks. Immediately following is our Advanced workshop from 8-9:30 p.m. Cost is $8.

Our Round Dance lessons continue with Leonard Snodgrass instructing moving to Monday nights beginning September 12th for Waltz Phase II+ to Phase III from 6:30-8 p.m. and Beginning Cha Cha from 8-9:30 p.m. at the Chehalem Community Center in Newberg. Cost to attend one class is $8; Cost for taking both classes is $12. The classes will run for approximately 12 weeks. The prerequisite for the Waltz class is knowledge of Phase II Waltz, and there is no prior dance experience required for the Cha Cha class.

The theme chosen for our 4th Friday Mainstream September dance (September 23rd) is Harvest. Several of our members are looking forward to attending Seaside Sashay this year as the event does not conflict with our dance night this year. Our caller, Randy Dibble, is a featured caller at the festival this year.

The Hahn Barn picnic and dance was lots of fun and also hot. It was good to take a break occasionally under the trees with a nice breeze.

Our August 20th dance was very nice with some of Oak Hills Squares graduated students attending. Mark Wheeler called for us in his Elvis outfit. He is also Oak Hills caller/instructor.

Beginning in October the Valley Squares will begin having our two dances a month on different days than we have in the past. Our dances will be on the 1st Fridays and 3rd Saturdays.

Our first dance in October will be on the 7th, a first Friday, from 7-9:30 pm at the Aloha Grange, MS with every 3rd tip Plus. Craig Abercrombie calling with Connie Clark cueing. Come join us and make this a great dance!

October 15th is our 3rd Saturday dance, Spooky Dance featuring Mark Wheeler and Connie Clark, see you there also.

Keep Dancing,

Carolene Siebert

This may seem like a broken record but not very much has changed over the past month. We were hoping to see some valley dancers trying to escape the heat but I guess they all have air conditioning. At least we have not had to cancel a dance due to low attendance but we mostly only have one square. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 (Note the time change) at the Elks Lodge in Tillamook. We are using the hall upstairs. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org.
