Dancer Etiquette

Why do we go to Square & Round Dances? It’s to relax & enjoy ourselves, right? So, when we arrive at the dance and walk in the door, there are people who greet you, there are the Caller & Cuer set up on stage ready to provide entertainment for you. Their goal is to see that you enjoy yourselves and come away feeling good about the event.

Putting on a dance is a complex affair. There are many elements that need to be accomplished to have a successful dance. The club hosting the dance must have a hall, seek volunteers to take care of the details, hire Callers & Cuers and promote the dance. The dancers must know there is a dance and be interested enough to come. The Caller & Cuer spend time outside of the dance preparing programs and rehearsing to provide entertainment for the dancers.

What if that does not happen? What if the greeters aren’t interested in your presence, what if the Caller or the Cuer does not meet your expectations? How should you respond? You certainly can express your opinions to all present and elicit the same from others. Do you believe that would be wise?

There will be times when a dance may not live up to your expectations. Here is something to consider. Will it help to spend time expressing your discontent about your personal view of the dance to others at the dance? You certainly can do that, but should you? It is my belief that the primary reason that a person comes to a dance is to have some respite from everyday problems and to leave the dance feeling good. What I am certain of is, that complaining to others at the dance about the greeters, other dancers or Caller & Cuer will definitely not do that. The better part of valor is discretion. It is just common courtesy.

So, after reading this, I would like you to do your best to ensure that you present a positive presence at every dance that you may attend. It may not be always as you expect, but that needn’t be expressed at the dance. If the problem is significant, then I would hope that you take the time to express that issue to the Club officers in confidence.

Sharing is caring,
Tim Keck
President

Editor's Note

Our very long summer is finally coming to a close, and the leaves will finally begin to turn. As we enter the annual holiday season, take a moment to be thankful for making it through another year, and for the friends in your square dance family who brighten your day.

We are back to calling, cueing and teaching squares and rounds. It's been a LONG two years, and we've all managed to get through it! Whew!

Our next Fifth Saturday Dance is October 29, 2022. We'll have pre-rounds at 7:00 and then a mainstream dance with rounds at 8:00. Can you believe 2023 is just around the corner?! Unbelievable!

The Fifth Saturdays in 2023 include April 29, July 29, September 30, and December 30.

We are continuing to stay safe with our members being vaccinated, etc. We continue having hand sanitizers available as well. Individually wrapped snacks are welcome. Our water fountain has been turned back on, but we realize some will opt to bring their own water.

Welcome back to calling, cueing, teaching and dancing! Continue being safe, everyone!

Keep on calling and cueing!

Christina Corelli

Cast A Shadow - Link
We were sorry to have to cancel our dance on Sunday, Oct. 2 because we had some dancers out with COVID or having been exposed to COVID. Since we dance with normally just one square on the floor, we cannot dance when some members have to cancel out. We hope to have two more dances in October on the 16th and 30th. We are particularly looking forward to dancing to a live caller, Kris Jensen from New Mexico, who will call Oct. 30 for us in the afternoon and for Spin Cycle Squares in the late afternoon. She is a terrific caller so if you are in the vicinity, please join us. It is always best to call to make sure we are dancing before driving any distance. Call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 or Gaynor Hintz (541) 741-4149.

Our dances are held from 1:30-3:30 in Hall B behind the Emerald Square Dance Center at 20th and Yolanda in Springfield. We generally dance twice a month when we have enough for at least one square with some spares. Our tentative dance schedule can be found at cas-sd.yolasite.com.

Advanced is a lot of fun and good for one’s brain and body. Come join us.

On Sept. 23 Single Trees held our first dance of this season with Scott Zinser calling and Jackie Gale cueing. What a fun night! We had two very strong squares on the floor until the last tip just before 10. Scott had to review a few moves as we had some “rusty” dancers on the floor. We were so pleased to see one couple from Lebanon Square Circlers and three couples from our sister club the Whirl-A-Ways. Perhaps we’ll see more visitors now that the season has begun.

Our caller Jim Hattrick as many of you know had a bad fall and broke his hip this summer. He is now recuperated and tells me he is back to calling and teaching. We look forward to seeing him in October for our Halloween Dance October 28. Costumes are optional and we will at times award prizes to most original, etc. Jim is our club caller and always makes the dances fun along with our fabulous cuer Jackie Gale. We will have a 4th Friday dance in November, the day after Thanksgiving so come dance those calories off! We will be dark in December and January for Christmas and Mid-Winter.

Please remember that masking is optional and that hand sanitizer continues to be made available. Snacks are provided for the open breaks for those who need a little sustenance.

Please come join us for a fun night of square and round dancing from 7:30 to 10:00 at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield.

We will have a special Halloween Dance with the fabulous caller from Albuquerque, Kris Jensen from 4:00 to 6:00 October 30 at the hall in Springfield. Costumes are optional but also a lot of fun! There will be individually wrapped snacks only--no potluck. We encourage dancers to be responsible for their own safety which may mean wearing a face mask and socially distancing off the dance floor. There is a $5 donation for everyone for this dance.

We dance every Sunday from 4 - 6 at the dance center in Springfield at 20th and Yolanda. Tim Matteson is a great caller and will call whatever level we can muster. We have individually wrapped snacks on hand. We invite you all to join us! We're a fun bunch-- that's for sure. All dances are casual.

Please call our president, David Lajoie, at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. Once in a blue moon we are dark.

It's been a long two years for Whirl-A-Ways! We are happy to be back dancing at the hall in Springfield! We dance the second and third Saturdays. Our first dances for the new dance season were September 10 and 17. Mike Kious is the caller. Christina Corelli is the cuer. Please come and join us! 7:00 is Plus and then Mainstream and rounds begin at 7:30.

I'm sorry to let you know that the October 8 dance had to be cancelled because Mike Kious was in a three-car accident up in the Portland area and is recuperating. We pray he is well soon and back to calling. We are all concerned for Mike and Camille too. This is too scary!

Our cuer's new husband, Jake Westra, is taking square dance lessons from Roger Putzler. That would be so cool to add him to our Whirl-A-Ways roster!

All dances and classes are at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield.

Happy dancing!

We are now three weeks into our Intro to Clogging Class. We are excited about how many have joined this class. It is still not too late to join if there are others who would like to learn to clog. We hope those who have joined us will continue through to graduation, which will occur just before Christmas, and that they will desire to join the club come January. Glee is doing a wonderful job getting them all started and excited about learning to clog. We continue to have our 4:00 class, the Intro class at 5:45 and the Intermediate/Advanced class at 6:30.

It is great to see the dance floor beginning to fill back up after being so restricted due to the social contact requirements of the pandemic.

Our Thursday evenings were cut short by two weeks so our cuer, Randy Lewis, could recuperate enough from his hip surgery that he could walk with the aid of a crutch and drive. So, we only danced three out of the five weeks available. We are dancing and reviewing what we already know and walking through anything that gives us fits.

We surprised Randy the day after his 70th birthday with chocolate cake during a break. He enjoyed every bite and the smile in appreciation was a just reward. He got to go home with a little bit of leftover cake after the rest of us got our share on plates. Enjoyable way to enjoy a break.

The beginning round dance class that the club is sponsoring has a good attendance of 9.5 couples. We have lost one couple due to a personal injury and we are surprised and pleased that they are sticking with us. We seem to be explaining moves to their satisfaction and they just got their first full song on 10/2. So onward and upward. We are doing this by the seat of our pants since I have never cued, and Molly has never taught. We seem to mesh well together and are enjoying the challenge.

Our Corn ‘n Cluck dance on September 16 was a great dance with six squares. We had chicken and corn on the cob plus lots of other tasty dishes. Mike Kious was our Guest Caller and Leonard Snodgrass our Guest Cuer for the evening. The wind-up chicken races were a blast and we had two winners. So much fun!!!

Our 5th Friday Plus dance was a good one. There were not many Advanced Dancers, so we went with Plus for the entire evening.

The first Friday in October was another fun dance. Four of our six Youth dancers were in attendance. So much energy!

We will be DARK for the third Friday, October 21, because Randy Dibble is calling for the Seaside Sashay and several of the club members will also be attending. November 4 is our next first Friday dance. See you on the dance floor.

Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares enjoyed our monthly dance in September. We had our annual Oktoberfest dance, which is always fun, and we served Oktoberfest sausage with the traditional German flair including cream puffs.

Our birthday dance is coming up Sunday afternoon October 23. We will be celebrating our 28th year and invite all square dancers to join us. We would love to have a big birthday party, and we need all of you to make it possible.

Just an early reminder that due to the conflict with Christmas Eve, Willamette Squares will be dark in December. In the meantime, we will have our dancin’ shoes on and dancing the hours away at the Salem Square Dance Center. We hope to see you in a square.

Our Round of the Month (November) is “Stripes”, a two-step.

The council is planning to have visitations to clubs on their anniversary. We’re also trying to arrange joint visitations with the Tualatin Valley Council. We’d do this in hopes we can double the number of visitors to our mutual clubs. Accordingly, our next joint visitation will be to the M&M’s November 19th.

It was also mentioned that specialty dances need to be highly publicized, so they are not in competition with regular dances in the area. (Hopefully, other clubs might cancel their own dances to support the specialty dances, as they take a lot of work to organize.)

I’m sometimes amazed at how few people direct our club. We have club officers (elected) and committee members (volunteers and appointees). Several of our helpers are both officers and committee members. We all step in and help where needed, and that’s how we quickly get our work done.

And we’re the only club I know of who has three callers in our club! We plan to feature them calling next year.

We revel in our history. At our inception, we were the only club in the tri-county area that would allow single dancers to join!

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the October Harvest Dance on the 29th, perhaps the last Tri Council Dance. It will feature Jim Hattrick and be held at the Aloha Grange, 7:30 to 8pm rounds then 8 to 10 Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus.

Tim Keck, President Oregon Federation, was one of 19 participants of the TVC monthly Zoom meeting on September 26th. Officiated by TVC President Ursula Kuhn, topics included upcoming dances, reimbursements to clubs for class lessons, reporting of State meetings and Festivals, and after the Evergreen Council decided not to host the Tri-Council Dance, what to do next year. Also, the Hahn Barn dance will be in September next year in an attempt to have cooler weather.

November has two member clubs celebrating an anniversary. On the November 3rd the Sunset Promenaders Plus celebrates their 8th Anniversary at the Hillsboro IOOF hall. Then on the 19th, the Mix 'N Mingle celebrates their 38th anniversary with a dance on at the Winona Grange in Tualatin. Although a Plus club this will be a “Floor Level” dance so all Mainstream & Plus dancers are welcome. The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs.

Our next dance will be New Year’s Eve at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro featuring Darrell Kalmbach & KC Curtis calling with Tami Helms cueing. Pre-rounds begin 7pm, Mainstream from 7:30 to 9:30 with celebration at 9pm. Every 3rd tip Plus.

It is with pleasure that the CRD's let everyone know that Jim Hattrick is back calling and cueing. He is walking a little slower but has not lost anything but weight. We need to keep him in milk shakes.

We had our first set of lessons starting in October. Round dance lessons in 2-step have returned and had a small but enthusiastic group for our beginning square dance class.

November will have our annual Thanksgiving fling so come dance with us.

On a personal note, I was disappointed last month when we had only two squares of our core dancers dancing to a national caller. It was discouraging that dancers seem to stick only to their club dances and not venture out. We have basically lost two clubs this past year and that troubles many of us. I wish I had an answer.

Well, as an optimist I want to think that people will get back into dancing and next year will be the best ever.

Eager Beavers are grateful to Craig Abercrombie, Darrell Kalmbach and Jeanine Norden for filling for Jim Hattrick’s while he was recovering from surgery. We have been cheering Jim on during his recuperation from the broken hip, and look forward to having him back on the stage soon.

Our club was finally able to have our annual picnic in the cooler weather of mid-September with plenty of fun and games, including the ever-competitive board baseball.

On September 17th, a number of Eager Beavers attended founding member Paul Swenson’s 101st birthday party in the backyard of his home, and enjoyed sampling the three different cakes in the shapes of 1 0 1 that were made by his talented granddaughter!

We dance Plus with Rounds every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00, including most days. Come dance with us in November and enjoy Jim Hattrick calling and cueing on the 7th and 21st, and Darrell Kalmbach calling with Jeanine Norden cueing the 14th and 28th. Most of our dancers are vaccinated, we currently do not require proof of vaccination. For current information, please see our website at http://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above)

Ever heard of Christmas in July? This year we’re having July in September. What a blissful month it was, wonderful weather, 70’s and 80’s, beautiful sunsets, farmer’s markets still full of fresh produce. Crazy as it may seem, we started our fall lessons on September 13th. We started with students and angels filling the floor. Craig Abercrombie is the instructor and he had everyone out on the floor, in squares, dancing by the end of the evening!! Each week we’ve had more new and renewal students.

We did have our regular dances on the September 10th and 24th. On September 10th Scott Zinser was our caller and on the 24th it was Jim Hattrick. Randy Lewis is our regular cuer but he’s having a hip rebuilt. We’ll see him back as soon as he’s able.

What’s coming up in November with Hoedowners at the Aloha Grange? Lessons every Tuesday evening for our new students and a brush up for all you experienced dancers. And on November 12th, we’ll have Scott Zinser and maybe Randy Lewis, On November 26th K.C. Curtis will call and Randy Lewis will cue.

Hope to see you there.

The Oak Hills Squares continues to meet every Monday from 6.30 -8.30pm at the gym in Oak Hills. NW 153rd Ave, Beaverton

Our new beginner classes started on October 3rd , 6.30 – 7.25pm. We were thrilled to have 10 new dancers come along. We will be taking new students through October 17th and have already heard that more folks will be coming along. It is a very exciting time for our club.

Our caller is the amazing Mark Wheeler, who makes every Monday a fun time.

Our goal over the next couple of months is start going as a club to some dances. We plan to go at least one a month so we can meet up with everyone and introduce our newly graduated dancers.

November will see us doing a demonstration dance and beginner class at the LDS church in Lake Oswego. We haven’t been for a few years, so it will be good to go back and spread the fun of square dancing.

We hope as we move into the Fall that the positive trend continues and we can see our club grow.

R Square D began lessons in early September with fourteen students. Our booth at Squirrel Fest in August paid off, because two of the students found out about our lessons there.

We had our annual campout at Vista Park in Skamokawa in September – not as many camped over the weekend, but we had 23 there on Saturday afternoon for a club meeting and to enjoy a meal together afterwards.

November 11th is our “Veteran’s Day Dance” with Craig Abercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. As we have done in past years, veterans will get in free at this dance. It’s also a class-level dance (plus dancing the first hour and class-level calling for the rest of the dance). We hope to have many students in attendance!

Craig and Susan will again call/cue a “Gospel Dance” on November 26th. This dance is two days after Thanksgiving, so come and dance off some of that pumpkin pie!

November will be a more normal month for us than the past few very busy months have been. Our Main Stream Dance on November 5th will have Craig Ambercrombie calling and Leonard Snodgrass cueing. Our November 19th Main Stream Dance will have Darrell Kalmbach calling and Julie Stiers cueing. The Plus dances will be on Thursday November 3rd, celebrating our 8th Anniversary, and the 17th with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. Please join us .. we'd love to have you!

September was a super busy month for our club! Our normal Mainstream Dance on September 3rd was a thank-you and celebration to Julie and Mike Stout for their years calling and cueing for us and their wonderful friendship. We had a Hawaiian theme with ice cream and cupcakes served. The dance was well attended with more than 4 squares. This was the last night for Julie to cue. Our Mainstream Dance held on September 17th was the last dance that Mike Stout called with Randy Lewis cueing. The club did a visitation to Tri Squares on September 22nd for their 24th anniversary, there were just over 4 squares. Thank-you to Leslie Tallman and Johnny Semm for planning and organizing visitations this year. Plus dances were held on Thursday the 1st, 15th and 29th with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. The club had a campout on the weekend of September 9-11th at Wapiti RV resort. It was a great time with more than 40 people in attendance!

Our new officers, having taken their new roles in June, are doing an excellent job. I would like to highlight Ed Mickelson, our VP, for doing not only our monthly newsletter but he is also doing a weekly touch bases email to keep us all informed about the upcoming week. In addition, he and a team from the club have been reviewing all of our By-Laws. Thank-you Ed!

Tri Squares - Link
Tri Squares’ first dance of the year had to be cancelled! That weekend was hot and smoky, and fire danger was so high in our area that PGE was planning to cut power in some places. At the very same time our caller suddenly came down with Covid and we couldn’t find a last-minute substitute. So, with all that confusion the dance just wasn’t meant to be. But our second dance was great! It was our anniversary dance and lots of visitors came, including ten from the Sunset Promenaders! In addition in September we began lessons with approximately 15 Mainstream students and 10 Waltzers. And we visited the Chaps & Petticoats at their Trails-In Dance.

In November our lessons will continue (but please check our website (link above), because we couldn’t get the Kinton Grange for one of them, and there’s a possibility we may find another venue.) Lessons are on Sundays, Nov. 6, 13, and 27 at Kinton Grange, at 2:00 for Waltz and 3:30-5:30 for Mainstream. And for all dances and lessons this month our caller is Terry Halley and our cuer is Sandra Pinion. Our two dances are on Fridays: Nov.11, "Grateful Harvest Pie Party" (yum!) and Nov. 25th, "Black Friday" (black & white dance). 7:00 Plus & PreRounds, 7:30-9:30 Mainstream & Rounds with one Plus tip. Not very much has changed over the past month. We have not had to cancel a dance due to low attendance but we mostly only have one square. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 (Note the time change) at the Elks Lodge in Tillamook. We are using the hall upstairs. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org. (see above link)
