Keeping Your Club Healthy

Almost all of our clubs have begun dancing again. We have a new sense of what is normal. Old habits have been broken & new ones are being formed. We are all social beings, some more than others. I believe that the people who come to your dances want to socialize. Dancing is one way we can do that. It is your goal to see that it happens. All we need to do is hire exciting and interesting Callers and Cuers. That is the easy part.

We also need to administer our club, taking care of the details, establishing our goals and purpose, finding and keeping members, oh and taking care of the money to name a few. All of that is sometimes not so exciting, but it still needs to be done to keep our club healthy.

How do we make and keep our club healthy? Communication is one of the keys. Presidents, talk to your members. find out what strengths each of your members have. Use that information to help with club activities, pairing people to tasks that they will enjoy doing and can do well.

Do you have anyone who is great at sales? Is there someone who has good attention to detail? How about someone who is an accountant? Those people might be perfect for positions of Publicity, Secretary, and Treasurer. You also need to understand that some people may not fit any task. That is ok too.

Try to make the tasks that need to be accomplished a pleasant experience rather than a burden. We are all social beings, some more than others. Social interaction is the primary reason that we congregate to square and round dance. Part of that interaction is the praise & recognition of the people helping with the club’s administration; definitely do not forget that.

Is this a guarantee that your club will thrive and prosper? It may or may not be, but I certainly believe that it will help.

Sharing is caring.

Tim Keck
President

Editor's Note

And so, another year draws to a close. It's now been 8 years since we transitioned to an online OFN. Big thanks to the area editors, who have kept on contributing articles and photos, and to those who have dropped notes of encouragement.

I do need to think about how to make this process more easily usable by others, if I'm ever going to hand it off to someone else.. Right now, there's still an awful lot of "nerd intervention" required.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Mid-Winter

Mid-Winter Festival 2023 is scheduled for January 27-29, 2023, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Can you believe it's December? It is hard to think that Mid Winter Festival will be here in just over a month. I just wanted to introduce you to our Featured Callers so you can be excited to meet them in January.

Justin Russell hails from Memphis, TN and has been calling for 18+ years. He currently is on the CALLERLAB Board of Directors and records with Royal Records. He loves to travel and has called in 20+ states and multiple countries. He just got back from a calling trip to Sweden and Denmark.

Steve Edlund hails from Surrey BC and has been calling for over 35+ years. Steve currently calls for 4 clubs and is a former PNTSDF Champion. He records with Elite Records. Steve has also called more than 35 states and 8+ countries. He is also a proud new grandpa to a beautiful baby girl, who we hope will be on a square dance floor in a few years.

These are 2 amazing callers who are going to keep the floor lively and moving. And if you still don't know what to get that special someone for a present, never fear cause Mid Winter ribbons make a great gift that everyone will love! Look forward to seeing everyone in a Square. Have a Happy and Safe holiday!

Summer Festival

There is currently no Summer Festival planned for 2023.

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
We are back to calling, cueing and teaching squares and rounds. It's been a LONG two years, and we've all managed to get through it! Whew! We are finding that dances are being canceled due to the lack of dancers though. That's disappointing, but some dancers are still gun-shy when it comes to COVID, or out of practice or have found other things to do to occur their time. We hope, in time, that dancers will once again be attending dances and classes.

Roger Putzler is teaching square dancing Tuesday evenings. It started with seven squares and has firmly settled into five which is not bad. Everyone is having a great time including Jake Westra, Christina Corelli's new husband. He was surprised how much fun it was and is sticking with it. It is a lot of fun, and nobody knows what anybody else does for a living. We are all there for one thing, FUN!

The Fifth Saturdays in 2023 include April 29, July 29, September 30, and December 30. December 31 of this year is a Fifth Saturday, and Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli will be doing a Buccaneers dance so dancers can come and dance and bring it the new year when it hits Chicago, Illinois where Roger grew up. That means we'll start Pre-Rounds at 7:30 and Squares from 8:00 - 10:00. At 10:00 we'll bring in the new year with the fine people of Chicago. Then we can go home and bring in the new year at midnight with family and other loved ones. We'll miss the crazy traffic as well.

We are continuing to stay safe with our members being vaccinated, etc. We continue having hand sanitizers available as well and individually wrapped snacks. Our water fountain has been turned back on, but we some opt to bring their own water.

Welcome back to calling, cueing, teaching and dancing! Continue being safe everyone!

Keep on calling and cueing!

Christina Corelli

We had two dances in October, each one of which was just shy of two squares. The last dance on Oct. 30 featured caller Kris Jensen from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Kris is an excellent caller, and it was such a pleasure to dance to a live caller who could see what was happening on the floor and address it to keep us all dancing. We hope she comes back this way soon. We were happy to see Kaynor Heineck join us again after her foot operation laid her low for six months or so. There is a group photo in the photo section of those who attended the Oct. 30 dance.

In both November and December two dances have been tentatively scheduled, on the second and fourth Sundays. We dance from 1:30 to 3:30 in Hal B at the Emerald Square Dance Center. Please check our schedule at cas-sq.yolasite.com but always call before driving in from out of town if you are not on the email list and don’t get the word as to whether we are dancing or not.

Tea and coffee are always available and at times snacks are furnished by dancers. We are always happy to see visitors and would love to have two squares dancing on the floor again. As no lessons are available in our area, it is doubtful that we will see two squares again but one never knows who might move into the area. Fingers crossed! Call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 or Gaynor Hintz (541) 741-4149 for further information.

Happy dancing, everyone, and a wonderful New Year,

Gaynor Hintz

In October we held our annual Halloween Dance on the 4th Friday, Oct 28 with Mark Wheeler calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Jim Hattrick, our club caller, was unable to come down to call for us so he sent his protégée in his place. Mark did a fine job of calling for us, and we were happy to have him with us again. There were some fun costumes as well as elaborate ones, especially that worn by Melba Walker, a new member who danced with us some 30 years ago. She won best costume (see photo in photo section). We were happy to have visitors from Roseburg, Lebanon and Corvallis there. We hope our dance on Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving, will see Jim Hattrick able to join us. We will be dark in December and January because OF Christmas and Mid-Winter Festival.

Keep on dancing and please come join us if you’ll be in the area.

We had a very special Halloween Dance with the fabulous caller from Albuquerque, Kris Jensen , on October 30. Costumes were optional but also a lot of fun! Kris had an authentic looking red chili pepper on her head along with her chili t-shirt. Other dancers showed up in costume too. Always FUN!

We dance every Sunday from 4 - 6 at the dance center in Springfield on Yolanda. Tim Matteson is a great caller and will call whatever level we can muster. We have individually wrapped snacks on hand. We invite you all to join us! We're a fun bunch--that's for sure! All dances are casual.

Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. Once in a blue moon we are dark.

It's been a long two years for Whirl-A-Ways! We are happy to be back dancing at the hall in Springfield! We dance the second and third Saturdays. Mike Kious, our caller was in a car accident a number of weeks back and is still recuperating. His truck was totaled. Mike was rear-ended while stopped at a light. You just never know!

Mike's grandpa, George Hermann, called the October 15 dance. Mike learned how to call from George. They are both incredibly gifted, and we are so blessed to have them both on our stage calling. Christina's got a number of dancers up for rounds and knows people's favorite rhythm and/or dance.

K.C. Curtis did our annual Veteran's Day dance November 12. Veterans were given a free dance and a big thank you from everyone. We are so blessed and wanted our Veterans to know that we appreciate them.

We pray Mike is back with us for November 19.

A number of the Whirl-A-Ways members have been attending Tuesday night square dance lessons, encouraging the newbies and brushing up on their own dancing skills. It's amazing what we managed to “forge”' in two years. Jake Westra is still attending lessons and doing a great job. Learning to make mistakes is part of learning as a lot of us angels are experiencing as well! Fun!

Happy dancing!

Cherry City Cloggers - Link
The Cherry City Cloggers are well into our beginner’s class at this point and many of our veteran cloggers have now returned. We have thirty-five active members in two different classes that clog with us every Tuesday.

We were thrilled to have seventeen people in our Beginner Class which started on Sept 20. Since then, two have dropped out; one due to moving for the winter and the other due to personal reasons. The other fifteen are doing well. Those fifteen should be graduating just before the Christmas holidays and we look forward to many of them returning in January.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Clubs an incredibly Happy Holiday Season! Georganne Pfnister

Fall lessons are going well for the first Corvallis Squares class in a few years! Taught at the SSD level by wonderful Sandy Harris, the students are hoping to attend some of the new dancers' dances to hone their skills.

We had two dances in October, including our Halloween dance, where some super creative costumes were featured! We were dark in November, but we are planning a holiday dance the second Saturday of December with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing. It will be a treat to gather again. Happy Holidays to all! The club was dark for the first Saturday of October to join other clubs in dancing at the final club dance for the Oaky Doaks. There was a carpool of members who attended, including George Hermann, our club caller, who used to be their club caller for many years, and our current President couple, Eugene & Bonnie Ivy, long time members of the club.

Our second Saturday dance was about three squares of dancers working on keeping up with the moves and music from George. Our first November dance was at the Fairgrounds and the second Saturday dance was at the Salem Square Dance Center since the Fairgrounds was rented out.

Our new dancer dance is December 10 from 7-10 p.m. It is also our Silent Auction and Christmas dance. We hope you will come and support the many new students that are taking lessons this season. They are doing well and can use the encouragement from all of us regular dancers. There are twenty-two students in the class at IWW.

Salem Swingin' Stars
It is the official time of year to give thanks. We are grateful for all the dancers that support not only our dances, but dances throughout the state.

It was nice to be together at the Seaside Sashay. There were 20 Stars that attended. Loads of fun.

We are sorry that we had to cancel our November 4 dance due to illness. Our November 18 Dance will be our Thankful & Grateful Dance with Randy Dibble calling and our own Sherri Milling cueing.

December 2 is our New Dancer Dance including a Resale Clothing Area, December 16 is our Christmas Dance, and December 30 is our New Year's Eve Eve Dance. Come join us as we ring in 2023 a bit early. We are getting dressed up and will toast the New Year.

Check our Face Book page for all the latest news. Dances are posted on the Thursday prior to the dance.

See you on the dance floor. Happy Thanksgiving.

Silver City Squares
We have had a busy fall season. We have both mainstream and 2-step lessons going on. Mainstream has an average of forty students at class each week and eight or nine squares on the floor. 2-step has about fifteen students.

In October, the club pitched in and helped Waldo Hills Community Club with a clean-up/workday. Dusting, sweeping, mowing, and taking care of some downed branches. A lot of hands make it go faster.

Our ham dinner dance this year was a lot of fun. A good dinner and lots of fun dancing to Ian Craig and Julia Buchheit. Ian Craig and Julie Stiers did an excellent job at our Saturday dance in November.

Look for our flyer for our New Year's Eve dance! This will be a regular dance up until 10:00 pm, then it turns into an overnight party for the youth!

It was decided to not have a November meeting. Two TVC clubs sponsored October festivals and were well attended with 235 dancers at Seaside Sashay. TVC 5th Saturday dance on the 29th with Jim Hattrick calling/cueing had over nine squares attending with seven dancing at one time.

The next TVC dance will be New Year’s Eve at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro featuring Darrell Kalmbach & KC Curtis calling with Tami Helms cueing. Pre-rounds begin 7pm, Mainstream from 7:30 to 10:00 with New Years celebration at 9pm, midnight on the east coast. Every 3rd tip Plus.

Hoedowners - Link
What a transformative October it was! Weeks of warm, 80-degree weather and then BOOM, the rains returned! I guess it was mother nature telling us although we loved the lingering fall days, sometimes it’s best to get back on track which is exactly what the Hoedowners have been up to.

We had Scott Zinser calling on October 8th for our Pirate’s Booty dance. Randy Lewis is back waltzing and two stepping dancers around the dance floor and making a miraculous recovery from his surgery.

We were dark for our 2nd dance of the month so we could head west for the Seaside Sashay. It was their 20thAnniversary! That festival is always so much fun and Hoedowners don’t like missing any fun. Lots of lovely prizes, great decorations and Steve Noseck and Randy Dibble calling while Debbie Taylor was the featured cuer. Sixteen Hoedowners dined together Saturday night at our favorite restaurant, Finn’s. Oh, and don’t forget the post party at Laas’ beach house. There was something about jalapenos and limes in a bottle?

December is just around the corner. I hope you join us for our Dancers in Toyland dance on the 10th with Scott Zinser calling and Randy Lewis cueing. We’ll be dark on the 24th because it will be Christmas Eve!

Hoedowners would like to send their best wishes to Ferrous Steinka who so faithfully reminds us to get our report in each month. He’s hurt his back and we’re praying for a quick recovery.

Our recent Octoberfest was well attended and great fun for all. Craig Abercrombie, Adam Christman and Susan Healea were top-notch, as always, and the dancers thoroughly enjoyed their time at Catlin Grange. The German dinner was delicious and we were entertained by River City Riders just before the Saturday evening dance. Many thanks to all who helped make this a fun festival, including those who traveled quite a distance to support us. Ursula was even spotted helping with cleanup in the kitchen Saturday night!

R Square D has only one dance in December and that’s our annual Toy Dance on Friday, December 9th, at Kelso Senior Center. Craig Abercrombie is calling and Susan Healea is cueing the dance. New, unwrapped toys will be accepted and later donated to our local Salvation Army. We will be dark on December 24th.

Our plus and mainstream classes are expected to wrap up on December 14th and the club will soon make a decision about starting new lessons in January.

After a two-year absence, we will have a club Christmas party on Monday, December 12th, with a pot luck and gift exchange. This always promises to be great fun!

We wish everyone a blessed, safe Christmas and Happy New Year!

Our lessons continued in October with 13 Mainstream students and ten for Waltz. On two of the Sundays our new grange at Kinton was already booked up but fortunately one of our students, Greg Moravan, connected us to another venue at the Twin Oaks Air Park on River Road, only three miles west and for free! And although we could schedule only one dance in October, it was the Halloween dance and so much fun! Plus we visited the Hoedowners in Aloha, too.

The executive committee has decided to upgrade our December 4th lesson into a New Dancers Jamboree. So, please join us for our "B45 Jamboree!" on Sunday the 4th, from 3:30 - 5:30, with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion. Also our two Friday dances are: December 9th, "Rat Pack Reflections" (music of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin) and December 23rd , "Sounds of the Seasons". We begin earlier this year: 7:00 Plus and PreRounds; 7:30 Mainstream and Rounds (with 4th tip Plus); 9:30 break at the end. (Masks are optional -- please check our website for any masking updates.) And of course we're having our annual Christmas party December 11th at the Royal Panda in Tualatin... Will we play that White Elephant game again? I hope so!

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Some of our club members were able to get away to the Seaside Sashay where our caller, Randy Dibble was featured. This annual weekend at the beach is always a fun festival, but most of the time the weekend falls on a Friday that we dance and so it has been difficult for us to attend the festival. Some of what we love about this Seaside festival is getting to dance at the turnaround and enjoy the beach, Debbie Taylor's cueing and great callers, and those scrumptious Pig 'N Pancake breakfasts! The weather was spotty with some rain, but we lucked out during dance times and some of us managed to make it around town and get all our stamps in the scavenger hunt (Passport Promenade) by the deadline, and our club cuer, Leonard Snodgrass, won the big $50 gift certificate prize! This festival has so many fun door prizes you don't see at other festivals. Leonard has a long list of Seaside stores where he can redeem that gift certificate and he has until the first weekend in December to make it back.

On Tuesday evenings, 6:30-8 p.m. Mainstream lessons, taught by Randy Dibble continue, as well as our Advanced lessons from 8-9:30 p.m.

On Monday evenings our Round Dance program, taught by Leonard Snodgrass, continues currently with Phase III Waltz taught from 6:30-8 p.m. and also beginning Cha Cha, 8-9 p.m. If you've had these rhythms before but need to review, we have room for you to come join us. Cost is $8 for one class and $12 if you take both. Both programs are scheduled to continue into the new year.

Valley River Dancers will have their Mainstream Gospel dance on 4th Friday, November 25th. Here is the twist--it's the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, so come to the dance wearing Black!

In December we look forward to our 4th Friday Mainstream dance (December 23rd) which is both our Christmas gift exchange and also our New Beginner dance. This is a fun night you won't want to miss. Bring your new dancers and a wrapped gift for each person (valued at $5) for the game that will be played. Looking ahead to next month, our 2nd Friday Plus dance in January will be our Wintery White Out dance. Come join us on Friday, January 13th wearing white.

We normally go dark for the Thanksgiving through New Years holidays as many of our members are traveling or are having relatives visiting. Since our membership is small we need almost all of them present to have a dance. This, in addition to our caller having January commitments, we will be dark through January, resuming on February 7th. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org. (see above link)
