What is it like to be a Caller or Cuer?

Calling and cueing are an integral part of Square Dancing. The people who call and cue set the tone of the dance. When deciding to attend a dance, one of the first questions you may ask yourself is who is calling, who is cueing. So, it’s easy to call and cue right?

Calling & cueing involves much more than showing up to the dance and entertaining the dancers for a few hours. Every Caller and Cuer spend many hours behind the scenes preparing for their time on stage. The kind & type of music needs to be considered; the choreography needs to be practiced; all of this to prepare a program for the dancers.

Then there is the singing call. Some Callers have a natural talent, most everyone else must work at it. For Cuers, timing is everything when cueing a dance. This requires a great deal of commitment to accomplish. There are times when you as a dancer may not feel like attending a dance because you are tired or do not feel well. Callers & Cuers have a different perspective as they are committed to doing the dance & it will not happen if they are not there. On top of all of that, they are committed to being personable and friendly to all the dancers so that the dancers can enjoy the dance.

But they are getting paid to do all this, right? They sure are. Consider this though; the amount that they are paid is supposed to cover cost the equipment they have, the licenses that they carry, the music they buy, and all the off-stage time that they work to prepare for the dance. If you added this all up, you would certainly find that the “pay” would come to far less than that of a minimum wage job.

The main reason that Callers and Cuers do what they do is that they love to please people. They do that by providing an evening of entertainment for you. If you are being entertained when dancing to them, then they have achieved their goal. Sharing is caring,

Tim Keck President

Mid-Winter

Mid-Winter Festival 2023 is scheduled for January 27-29, 2023, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Welcome to January, the first month of 2023. We as a committee are all excited and preparing for your arrival to our festival in just a few short weeks. If you happen to read this before the 31st of December, please make your hotel reservation. Square dancer discounts at the hotels stop on the 1st of January so make sure you have your room. Another important date is the 8th. It's the last day to get the preregistration price tag, so save yourself some money and get those registrations in.

Now that we got all the important announcements out of the way let me introduce you to our two fabulous cuers that round out our amazing entertainment panel for you. First we have our round dance cuers, Deb and Tim Vogt from Las Vegas NV. They have been cuing for over 37 years. They delight the round dancers with lots of amazing dances from easy 2 all the way up to level 5/6. They primarily cue here in the west but are well traveled and if you get a chance to watch them at the showcase, they dance together amazingly! Next we have our clogging cuer Shane Gruber from Detroit, MI. Shane has been keeping cloggers on their toes for over 30 years. He has cued and performed across the entire world. He is truly a sight to behold and if you get a chance you should head over to the Comfort Suites hotel and watch him dance and teach.

We hope that you can come join us at what is shaping up to be a magical and enchanting festival. See you all in a square soon.

The Fifth Saturday of December, 2022 is also New Year's Eve. The Buccaneers are having a regular dance that evening so dancers can get home without having to worry about traffic after midnight. Pre-rounds with Christina Corelli will begin at 7:30, and squares with Roger Putzler will be from 8:00 - 10:00. At 10:00 we will celebrate New Year's Eve with Chicago. Roger Putzler was born and raised in Chicago so it's fitting! And the cost for this dance will be $2.50 a person just like it was back in the early 80's! What a deal!

The Fifth Saturdays in 2023 include April 29, July 29, September 30, and December 30.

We are continuing to stay safe with our members being vaccinated, etc. We continue having hand sanitizer available as well and individually wrapped snacks. Our water fountain has been turned on, but some opt to bring their own water.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Everyone!

Keep on calling and cueing!

Christina Corelli, Cuer

We danced the 2nd and 4th weekends in November, having our normal one square on the floor with several sitting out waiting their turn on the floor (at times we have been one dancer short of two squares). Fred Beisse found material from Bronc Wise and Darrell Lipscomb for us to dance to. It is always fun gathering with our friends in Hall B on these Sunday afternoons and testing our skills to top-notch callers.

Our first dance in December had to be cancelled due to lack of enough participants willing to commit. We hope that we will get to dance at least once in December on the 18th but hard to say with so many holiday events going on at this time of year and many with families visiting from out of town or out of town themselves. We’ll dance at least once in January and then hope to see all our other advanced friends in Albnay over the Mid-Winter 2023 weekend.

Please remember to check our website at cas-sq.yolasite.com to see +the tentative schedule of our dances but always remember to call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 to make sure we are dancing that particular date you have in mind.

Happy New Year to All! Keep on dancing!

We had one dance on Nov. 24 this past month. There were 2 squares on the floor dancing to Jim Hattrick’s and Mark Wheeler’s fine calling. There were also many round dancers out for Jackie Gale’s cueing. This was a new dancer dance but we only had two new dancers attend along with three ladies who had never attended lessons—or at least not lately. They did not stay long but did seem to enjoy themselves. The low attendance might have been caused by lessons having been cancelled that week due to an outbreak of COVID. We did have some guests out wanting to support the new dancers and get the opportunity to dance to Jim Hattrick.

We are looking forward to dancing at Mid-Winter, Several members have purchased their ribbons in anticipation of a fun weekend.

We continue on with our normal schedule of dancing every 4th Friday at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Hall A from 7:30 to 10 except when there is a holiday on that weekend or a festival such as Mid-Winter. Our next scheduled dance is Feb. 24 and it will be our 58th Birthday Dance with Jim Hattrick and Jackie Gale. Please come help us celebrate.

Happy New Year to all,

Gaynor Hintz

We dance every Sunday from 4 to 6 at the dance center in Springfield on Yolanda. Tim Matteson is a great caller and will call whatever level we can muster. We have individually wrapped snacks on hand. We invite you all to join us! We're a fun bunch that's for sure. All dances are casual.

Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. Once in a blue moon we are dark.

We are dark January 8, 15, and 22 of 2023 as the hall is not available those days.. We should be back to normal in February.

Our caller Mike Kious was back with us December 10 for our Christmas dance with the Single Trees. He is still recovering from a car accident that happened back in September, but recovery has been slow, and there is a possibility that surgery may be needed. We continue to keep him in our thoughts and prayers. He was pretty sore and moved slowly, but boy oh boy, he called a tremendous dance with Christmas music. All of Christina's rounds were Christmas-themed as well, and everyone sang Silent Night at the end of the dance. The December 10 dance was the only dance that Whirl-A-Ways and Single Trees had in December. There was an incredible potluck hosted by the Single Trees prior to the dance.

We are back to our regular second and third Saturday dances in January of 2023.

A number of Whirl-A-Ways attend the square dance beginner class as angels. We have up to five squares still . The new dancers are doing well. Roger Putzler is the teacher.

We look forward to Mid-Winter festival the end of January.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2023!

Happy dancing!

If you have ever been to a dance at our hall, you know that we have a 50/50 tumbler, a spin the wheel, and a sign in book. Since our November 12 dance was at the Salem Square Dance Center, no one in charge thought to take any of that to the dance center for the dance. We used scratch paper from the basket on the shelf to sign in, borrowed a tumbler from the Salem Swingin’ Stars along with some tickets, and we did not do the spin the wheel. We had a good laugh for that, but we survived.

Our December dances were back at Polk County Fairgrounds and the second Saturday was our Silent Auction which benefits our chosen charity, Windsor House, our Christmas dance, and the new dancer dance. We bring decaffeinated coffee for the Windsor House so they can have more than one cup a day.

We have a couple of our lady dancers who have undergone some major surgeries, so we are concerned and caring for them in any way we can. Get better, ladies. The caller’s wife, Patty, has been under the weather off and on also.

Lessons are going well. We still have three to four squares each Sunday They will be finished with lessons by Mid-Winter and ready to go for a full weekend of dancing.

We wish a happy and bountiful new year to all our dance family.

Our club has been busy with dances, lessons, meetings, and other activities. On Sunday, November 27 our club hosted the MWA New Dancers Dance. It was a glorious dance with 98 dancers signing in. Our club has had a class of 12 dancers, and we are planning on attending other new dancer’s dances. As usual, our club participated in the Lebanon Christmas decoration project at Ralston Park. Our annual Toy Drive Dance was on Dec. 4.

Our 73rd Birthday Dance has been rescheduled for February 4 with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Every third tip will be Plus. Strawberry shortcake will be served at the break.

The club has been dancing weekly on Thursday’s and doing the best we can to get a full circle of dancers. It is not the best attendance, but we are continuing on.

Our first night of tango class had five dancers come in for the class. Plus, the regulars all came too. It was encouraging and we had fun learning a few steps on our venture into the unknown for the dancers who have not had tango before.

We are hosting a New Year’s Eve dance, so come and enjoy our evening of fun and dancing with friends.

Happy New Year! Our New Dancer Dance was a hit. There were six squares on the floor all night. Lots of new dancers both young and young at heart. Many clothing items were sold. It was an all-around fun evening.

Our Christmas Dance was December 18. December 30 is our New Year's Eve Eve dance. We will be toasting the New Year just a bit early. Our current mainstream class will graduate on January 11 with a potluck and ceremonies. Then we will practice as much as possible to get ready for Mid-Winter at the end of January. Our two regular dances in January are January 6 and January 20.

Hope to see many of you on the dance floors across the valley.

We are graduating our Mainstream class just before Mid-Winter and we have some of the class planning to go to Mid-Winter!

The Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival is happening this year. It will be in the Auburn/Kent area in Washington the first weekend in May 2023. Right now, we have three squares for sure with another one to two possible. The kids are fundraising, so we do have the Festival Pins available. We are also selling our raffle tickets which are three $100.00 cash prizes and will be drawn at the kids fundraising dance at the end of February. Please watch for the flyer for the dance.

The 2-Step class is going well. We still have 17 students, and we are hoping for graduation in early March.

Looking back on 2022 - it sure felt great to be dancing again!  We were very excited to chat with people we had not seen in over two years, some in over a decade.  So glad to be a square dancer!

Chaps and Petticoats wish to express our ‘in-awe’ appreciation for the unbelievable turnout at our Sunday, November 20th ‘New Dancer’ JAMBOREE.  How could we ever have anticipated over 125 people would come through the door - at one point 15 squares were on the dance floor, seven Callers were in attendance and three Cuers. With that many people, the Club had to think outside the box - for example:

1.)  how to expedite registration and get all those bodies though the doors and dancing,

2.) a banquet room that accommodated 80 people (max. bench seating) - we had help from our former President and wife (Bill and Cindy) who helped us coordinate (top to bottom floors) on the foods needed and how to strategize the flow for dining, 3.) our bean counter, Vicki, who threw Club names (in attendance) into a hat and drew a handful at a time for dining and 4.) our door people pulled the club together, relocating the experienced clothing to the Foyer just to have the hall clear for dancers.

These were all WONDERFUL problems to have!!   In conclusion:  How do you get people to come … serve them food!!  This could not have happened without the donation of prepared foods from our members and other club dancers… Thank you, thank you for creating this memorable event!!  Also, a big thank you to:

1. Our members, 2. the dancers in attendance, 3.our Club Caller:  Scott Zinser (have you ever seen him smile that big?), plus the other seven Callers in attendance, and 4. to our out-of-area South Coast Cuer, Dave (& Patty) Cooper - it was so great to have two other Cuers in attendance that day too.

Chaps and Petticoats are still enjoying the glow from such a positive experience … Thanks for the memories!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2023!

Our Dec 17 th was small with 1 square, but lots of smiles!!

Our September SSD class will graduate Dec 27th. The next session starts on Tuesday January 10th.

Our dances in January will be lots of fun!!

January 7th J Domis and Rikki Lobato will call and cue. This is a special dance with all dancers and wanna be dancers invited. J does a great job of getting everyone on the floor! This is the 3rd time he has done a dance like this and there is an average of 60 dancers that come out with all dance levels represented!! Should be a great time!! We are hoping that we will het some dancers interested in our new class the following week!

January 21st will be our Amateur nite for all up coming callers and cuers! This is for anyone who wants to see what it’s like. Chuck will MC and Bob Dingman will cue. We usually have several give it a try and it’s always fun!!

Our January starts on the eve of the first with the club hosting the Front Porch Trio of Jim Hattrick, Adam Christman, and Craig Abercrombie. The dance will begin at 9:00 PM and if it is anything like past dances with this group the hall will be buzzing.

Jim is putting the final touches on our 2-step classes so all of the class can round dance by new year’s eve.

We will also have Jim starting new classes in both square dance and beginning phase two waltz. Our round dance classes begin at 5 PM and our beginning square dance class will start at 6 PM on Sunday evenings.

Our real first dance will be on the sixth with Jim calling and cueing. Our second dance will be on the 20th and will be our preparation dance for Winter Festival.

And so, as we begin our new year, it is with hope and prayers that this year will see a growth in clubs and dancers.

Happy New Year to all.

November is in our rearview mirror already and we’re sliding into 2023!! Horrors!! It was a quick month for Hoedowners. On the 12th we had our Soup Night Dance. What fun it was to return to eating in the dining room and homemade soup is always a winner. Scott Zinser was our intrepid caller and Randy Lewis leading us in rounds.

On November 26th we enjoyed our Movie Night Dance. While KC Curtis was on stage calling square dance moves, Randy Lewis lead the rounds. After dancing we adjourned to the dining room and enjoyed pizza. There were several options for discerning pizza eaters. Later, just out of the corner of my eye, I believe I saw an orange cowboy hat. I wonder what that was all about?

Our mainstream classes continue as we prep for Mid-Winter.

Our Dance on January 14th will be our Black and White Ball and we’re dark January 28th for Mid-Winter Festival.

Happy New Year! We hope 2023 is filled with many blessings and enjoyable dancing for each of you.

R Square D honored veterans at our November 11th Veteran’s Day dance by giving each veteran free admission to the dance. We had quite a few vets there and it was a fun dance. Our Gospel Dance, just two days after Thanksgiving, was also well-attended. Craig Abercrombie and Susan Healea called and cued to favorite music that kept with the theme of each dance.

New lessons will begin on Wednesday, January 11th, with plus at 6:30 and the beginning class at 7:30. We are encouraging our students who just finished lessons to return in order to reinforce what they learned and to help brand new dancers.

Our first dance of 2023 is “Buckaroo Stomp!” on Friday, January 13th, with Craig and Susan again calling and cueing that night. We will be dark on January 28th because that is Mid-Winter Festival weekend.

In November several of our members helped out at our "new" Kinton Grange with its annual Christmas bazaar, the Kinton Holiday Faire. Our lessons in Waltz and Mainstream rolled merrily along, and we happily visited the Chaps and Petticoats for their Jamboree, enjoying their delicious turkey dinner. Also we had two dances of our own, "Black Friday" our black and white ball, plus "Grateful Harvest Pie Party" where we got a great head-start on all those holiday pies!

In January our remaining Mainstream lessons continue on Sunday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30, beginning January 8th with our caller Terry Halley. Our only dance this month is on Friday, January 13th, a B-51 dance "Cowboy Country" with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion. Please put on all your cowboy duds and bring your students! Our 2nd Friday in January is our WhiteOut Plus dance--wear white! We will be dancing mainstream on the 4th Friday this year since mid-Winter Festival is the following weekend. Join us at 7:30 for pre-plus and mainstream with rounds from 8-10:30.

On Monday evenings we have open Round Dance lessons/workshops, taught by Leonard Snodgrass. We have a Phase III Waltz class from 6:30-8 p.m. and also Beginning Cha Cha, 8-9 p.m. If you have had either rhythm before and need a refresher you are welcome to come join us.

We had a bit of a rocky start in November with our 1st Friday dance on Nov 4th. We cancelled the dance due to the heavy rain and high winds. It was a hard decision, but it was the right thing to do to keep everyone safe in that weather.

The play that was put on by the Encore Senior Players on Sunday, Nov 20th was fun to watch. We did a fundraiser for the Aloha Grange Stair Lift and raised over $700. That was great! Thank you everyone who came and donated. We served refreshments at the break.

So come join us for our January 6th (first Friday) and 21st (third Saturday) dances, Craig Abercrombie is calling, Connie Clark cueing, 7-9:30pm, MS with every third tip Plus with open break.

Tuesday, January 10, 2023 Valley Squares starts new classes, 7-9 pm with Jan 10th & 17th free at the Aloha Grange. If you know of anyone who is interested, let them know that these two classes are FREE. For more information, they can call me at 503-250-2139.

Due to the weather affecting travel to and from the coast, and our snowbird members, we are going to be dark until our first dance in February. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Elks Lodge in Tillamook. We are using the hall upstairs. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org. (see above link)
