Festivals, if done right, are exciting events. There is always lots to do and many friends to dance with. How does all that happen? It always starts with a committee of unique individuals. These are the people who attend to the hundreds of details that make up the festival, and if successful in their endeavors, they make it look like a walk in the park. If you have been on a festival committee, you know that a fair amount of work happens over two years to bring a three-day festival together.
When we plan a festival, it’s the committee chair who begins to work on the program at least three years in advance. They need to find exciting Square and Round Dance Callers and Cuers who are willing to perform. They need to find the venue to have the festival. They also need to find the right people for their committee who have the skills necessary to help with all the details for the program.
The committee people will start doing their thing about one year before the festival. They need to make sure their parts fit well with the other committee members. The moment they feel they have a perfect plan, something happens, and it changes; it is just the way it goes.
There is the cost. Good Callers & Cuers aren’t cheap. The venues that are needed for a festival are always expensive. The really scary thing though, is to predict how many people will come to the festival. In the past, dancers would register well in advance. Knowing that would help the chair manage their expenses. Nowadays, it seems that most of the registrations happen within a month of the event. This causes a great deal of anxiety because we don’t know if we will have enough money coming in to cover our expenses until the last minute.
If it doesn’t make money, should we quit doing it? By the time we get through all the expenses and add up the income we usually feel grateful to break even; something we haven’t done for a couple of years. However, profit is not the most important factor for a festival. The most important factor is that we were able to provide a place for our Square and Round Dance family to meet and enjoy a unique dancing experience that they may only have two or three times a year.
Looking back on what we have experienced in the past few years and seeing that our dancing community is on the rise again, I believe that we should continue to make every effort to provide a unique experience of a festival for our dancing community.
Sharing is caring,
Tim Keck
President
If April showers bring May flowers, we should have a heck of a lot of flowers in May. I hope you've been able to register for one of the many special events and festivals coming up this summer.

Frank was Born March 7, 1936 in Hagerman, Idaho to his father Ralph Thomas Collett and mother Irene Mable Eliason. After moving from job to job his parents settled on a homestead in Grand View, Idaho. Frank attended the College of Idaho then went to the University of Idaho where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering. He taught at the University of Idaho for a couple of years then went to work for the US Forest Service for over 30 years until his retirement on May 1, 1994. His job took him all over the US, including: McCall, Idaho; Ogden, Utah; Elko, Nevada; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and finally Portland, Oregon. A notable aspect of his career was his work to replace roads, structures, and campgrounds after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980, of which he received several honors for his work. One highlight was a helicopter ride in and around Mt. St. Helens, just weeks after the eruption in order to assess the damage and decide the future of the area.
Frank met his wife Nadine in McCall, Idaho in 1965. They were married February 5, 1966 at Frank's parents home in Grand View, Idaho. Their first child Ray Frank Collett was born in Elko, Nevada, and their second child was Paul Joseph Collett born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Frank was active in Boy Scouts and was proud that both of his boys each became Eagle Scouts. In addition to being active with his son's troops, he volunteered for several years at the district level, helping dozens of youth complete their Eagle Scout award.
While living in Tigard, Frank and his wife were active members of a Square Dance club and they usually danced 3 or 4 times a month and attended most of their club’s other events and camping trips.
Nadine's parents, with Frank & Nadine's help, built a cabin in 1978 near Greenhorn, Oregon. It became a tradition to spend Christmas and/or New years at the cabin, as well as a week during spring break, and multiple summer and fall trips. During the winter, the cabin was only accessible via an 11 mile snowmobile ride. Spending time at the Cabin was a particularly special part of Frank's life.
While living in McCall, Idaho in 1966, Frank & Nadine bought a pickup mounted camper and used it hundreds of times for camping and hunting, activities that they loved doing. In 1995 they replaced the old camper with a 5th Wheel RV for camping and long road trips. In 1997 they used it to tour Alaska for three months with square dance friends, Jack & Marge Harmon. In 2013 they went to Arizona in February and to Alaska again for two months in the summer. They used the 5th wheel extensively until about 2020.
Frank and Nadine were close to all of their extended families and went to many family reunions and gatherings with both sides of their families.
Frank is survived by his wife Alice Nadine Collett, two sons Ray Frank Collett (Nancy Faye Collett) and Paul Joseph Collett (Sophy Jane Collett). Three GrandChildren, Kaden Ray Collett, Gavin Cosgrove Collett & Merida Nancy Collett. He is survived by 5 brothers and 1 sister; Kenneth Ray Collett, Delores E Collett, Lee Ward Collett, Neal Earl Collett, Glen Alton Collett and Delores E Zaugg. His sister Dorene Mae Sudweeks passed away in 2021. Two Brother-in-laws Earl Max Sudweeks and David M. Zaugg preceded him in death.
The family has set up the 3rd of June for a picnic to honor Frank Collett. It will be a potluck held at Cook Park in Tigard. Ray Collett will barbecue Bratwursts, Nadine will provide the condiments.
The address is 17005 SW 92nd Avenue, Tigard, behind Tigard High School. It will be in Shelter # 4, between 4:00 and 7:00 PM.
We would love to see you there.
July 29, 1938 - April 13, 2023
Harlan Arthur Flint died April 13, 2023, in Washington County, Ore., at age 84. He survived cancer and faced Parkinson's disease with courage and determination. Harlan was born July 29, 1938, to Waldo B. and Thelma "Dolly" (Johnson) Flint. He lived nearly his entire life at Mid Valley Farm near Scholls, Ore. The rich land was home to the Kalapuya peoples until an 1855 treaty, then homesteaded in 1865 by Harlan's great-grandfather, Benjamin T. Flint. In 2015, Mid Valley Farm was honored as Oregon's 29th Sesquicentennial Family Heritage Farm.
Harlan graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1957. He played saxophone in dance band, ran track until he broke a leg, and was a Future Farmer of America. An early marriage produced three children, two of which survive him: Mark and Beverly. In 1965, Harlan married Beverly J. A. Davidson in Heppner, Ore. They settled at Mid Valley Farm and raised a daughter, Sadie. Harlan worked 38 years at Western Kraft, Beaverton, a division of Willamette Industries, though he also farmed his entire life. In retirement, Harlan and Bev cultivated flowers, vegetables, fruit trees, walnuts and chestnuts, and leased acreage. He was an accomplished mechanic and welder; he often designed solutions that enabled him to fix anything.
Harlan was full of life, devoted to family and friends, and helped others selflessly. He rode motorcycles from a young age, and was a lifelong, avid hunter which for many years included trips to Wyoming to hunt antelope. He loved to boat, fish, camp, scuba dive, barter, shoot pool, watch Westerns, and join a poker game. With Bev, he shared a love of the farm, and of horses, pets, music and dancing, which included the Toe Draggers, where they square danced together for 35 years. Harlan was also a lifelong member of the Kinton Grange.
Harlan was predeceased by his beloved wife, Beverly; and by two siblings, Byron W. Flint and Marian Flint Stobbe. His survivors are daughter, Sadie; her husband, Peter Pittock Lynn; and their son, Oscar. Sadie cared for her father with love and devotion after her mother passed in December 2022. Harlan is also survived by family who share portions of the Flint homestead: sister, Loretta Flint, brother-in-law, Dale Stobbe; nephews, Jeff Boswell, Dave Flint and their families.
Harlan will be buried with his wife, Bev, at Mountainside Cemetery, Scholls, Ore.

We had the 16th and 30th tentatively scheduled for April and the 7th and 21st scheduled for May. Check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for further out. As always if we cannot get positive feedback for any given date then we don’t hold a dance so please call Fed at 458-221-3564 or Gaynor Hintz at 541-741-4149 to make sure we are dancing any given Sunday. We dance in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center (door located behind the building). Hope to see you out dancing with us!

We are pleased to announce that our member, Susan Hess, who has served on our board for quite a long time now in various capacities, got married to her high school sweetheart Jim on March 25. Congratulations, Susan! Jim is now a square dancer too!
On March 24 we had our fourth Friday dance with Mark Wheeler calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Jackie Gale's husband Bill was on hand to help man the door for our treasurer Joy Pitts so she could dance. We love Bill because he often will squire some of the ladies on the round dance floor. We had a nice turnout considering our sister club, the Whirl-A-Ways, was at the coast for their spring campout. We had two squares for plus and three for mainstream. There were some newly graduated dancers in attendance so Mark did a lot of repetition so that they could do the calls better. Jackie had a full round dance floor as some of our guys who love to round dance were in attendance. A good time was had by one and all.
We held our annual election of officers March 24 and have a new president, Joy Pits. Her sister Melba will be vice president and help her along the way. Not only will she be president, but she will also continue as treasurer. Both are big jobs and demand a lot of time and energy. Thank you, Joy, for stepping forward to keep our club running.
We're looking forward to our April 22 dance with Darrell Kalmbach callinge. Jim Hattrick remains in rehab and even when released to go home it will take quite a long time to recuperate according to his wife Judy. We continue to send good thoughts his way.
In May on the second Saturday of the month we will combine with our sister club, the Whirl-A-Ways, to hold our annual Mexican Fiesta Dance with Mike Kious calling and Christina Corelli cueing. This is always a fun dance as we have a sit down break with a taco bar and many wear their most colorful shirts and dresses. Please come join us!
See you in a square,
Gaynor Hintz
We received news that one of our former members, Jenn Hansen, lost her daughter, Catheran (33), to cancer. Catheran leaves behind two young boys. We were shocked and saddened by this news and are keeping Jenn and family in our thoughts and prayers.
We invite you to join us any Sunday from 4 - 6. It might be wise to call David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We shouldn't have any dark Sundays, but one never knows. We dance in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. The floor is cushioned, and we have heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

We are back to our usual schedule of the second and third Saturdays. We have Plus from 7:00 - 7:30 and then Mainstream with rounds. Mike Kious is still very sore and may be undergoing surgery to relieve the pain. This is all from the accident back in September of 2022.
About a dozen Whirl-A-Ways and a Single Trees couple had an absolute blast at our spring campout on the coast. The purpose of this campout was FUN! That's what we all had - FUN! Omelet in a bag, lots of different games, outings to the beach, etc. We all dined together at the Florence Elks Friday evening. Thanks Kevin Heine and Marvin Baker for setting this up. Christine Beneda did a lot to make this weekend successful too. A big thank you to everyone!
Our April 8 dance was a fun Sock Hop! A great opportunity to wear poodle skirts, slicked back hair, etc. Our April 15 dance was a free community dance from 7-9. We had a successful community dance in March also prior to our regular dance. Some of the community members wanted more. Yippee!
Ron Gates, our vice-president had successful eye surgery at OHSU up in Portland. Recovery means a number of weeks without bending over or lifting heavy objects. We wish him well and for recovery to go quickly. He's looking at having surgery on the other eye as well.
Ron Gates, our vice-president, is in charge when our president Todd Jensen, is south. Thanks Ron! Todd should be back soon as it's starting to get hot down in Arizona! Both of these dancers are appreciated more than they can imagine!
Please join us the second and third Saturdays at the Emerald Dance Center.

Our first annual International Butterfly dance on March 25 was well attended, and we all enjoyed an international dinner and butterfly theme. In May, we look forward to more dancing! We wish Jim Hattrick all the best as he continues to recover.
Karen
Our guests for May include Mark Wheeler, Randy Lewis, Terry Halley, and Sandy Harris. Come and see us during May to enjoy these callers and cuers. Remember that we are auditioning some of them for our new club caller and cuer. Voting by the club will take place in August.
One of our club members is down with a broken wrist from a fall at home. Get better soon Celinda. Take care.
Marilyn
Our club is graduating fourteen new Plus dancers. Isn’t that great?
Plans are going forward for our annual Strawberry Festival, which will be a normal three-day event this year. We are looking forward to seeing all our dancing friends. See you in a square.
Marilyn
We will be preparing to host a Celebration of Accomplishment in July and hope you will attend to honor some good choreographers for rounds and callers for squares. There is a flyer on Facebook and will be in the OFN soon.

Darrell Kalmbach called our 5th Friday Plus Dance in March with four squares on the floor all night. Great fun.
April was our Birthday Month. April 21 was a celebration of our 57th Birthday as a club. We had cake as well as our other tasty goodies. That is also the night that the club elections for Board Officers was held. Good luck to all who have stepped up to help make the club run efficiently.
We dance on the first and third Fridays in May and all summer long in our air-conditioned hall.
Our new dancers are learning fast at lessons and will graduate in early June. See you all on the dance floor.
Sheila Machado
The next PAC 5th Friday dance will take place on June 30. This dance will be co-hosted by River City Dancers at the Milwaukie Community Club from 7-10 PM.
What a difference the PAC visitations have meant to clubs celebrating their anniversaries. The attendance feels like old times, with 5-6 squares on the floor. Clubs have experienced increased income thanks to increased attendance and split-the-pot donations.
The PAC visited the Buzzin’ Bees anniversary in Vancouver on April 8. PAC’s visitation was a success, contributing about half the 56 dancers. Congrats to the Buzzin’ Bees!
The following anniversaries are coming up:
* Happy Hoppers: May 6, 7-9:30 PM, Washington Grange. Craig Abercrombie will call and cue.
* River City Dancers: June 10, at Milwaukie Community Club 7-10 PM.

It was decided at our annual meeting to keep the same dance schedule, dancing the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays.
We had a great anniversary dance, attended by seven past presidents, past callers, and cuer. Our total membership was there. It was also a PAC visitation. A big thank you to all who came. Several tips with 5 squares on the floor. And one new member.

Don't miss the annual Barn Sale at the Boring Barn on May 12th and 13th, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There will be some treasure that you will find, if you look hard enough! Something for everyone! Cut-Ups will be setting up on 9th and 10th, so the 8th is the last day we can accept donations.
For the Cuts-Ups, the Mystery Trip is making a comeback after being gone for 3 years. Where are we going? Only Young and Robert know for sure. May sure you are signed up for this exciting event.
Remember the Country Cut-Ups dance every 1st, 4th, and 5th Saturdays. Come on out and dance with us. Scott Zinser calls the 4th Saturdays, and Tami Helms will be cueing in May. First Saturday in May will feature Mike Kious, calling and Julie Stiers, cueing.
See you in a square!

Our April social dance was a big success. Our theme was Spring Fling, and Chuck Simpkins came up from Grants Pass to call the dance for us. We recruited Chuck’s wife, Carla, into our squares, and we loved her sparkly hat and zealous dancing. Extra kudos to our January students Julia and Joey, who attended their first-ever Ramblers social dance!
At the annual membership meeting preceding the dance, we elected the following Board members:
President: Jeff Knapp
Secretary: Eileen Pettycrew
Treasurer: Tara O'Neil
Member at large: Mary Parsley
Member at large: Louise Richards.
Excitement is building for our Mad Plaid Grad graduation dance on May 13. We plan to graduate 8 students this May! The graduation dance is always one of the highlights of our dance calendar, and we have a superb caller for the occasion in Eric Henerlau. We will dance from 7 to 9:30, with a brief break to hand out diplomas and badges at approximately 7:45. It's a blast to see how many crazy combinations of plaids people can come up with. Please join us!
SYIAS!
Jeff Knapp
We hope to see you soon on the dance floor!
The TVC is looking for a new Vice President, Treasurer, and Caller Advisor. Election of Council officers is held at the May 22nd meeting. Nominations must be submitted before then. Those elected take office in June. Please consider running for one of these positions.

December 31 will be the New Year’s Eve Dance with Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms.
The Council encourages all dancers to attend Anniversary dances. It is important to support our dancing community. The Valley Squares will celebrate their 74th Anniversary on May 5th Grange with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Connie Clark cueing.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the April 29th TVC dance at the Kinton Grange. It has been grey and overcast for far too long. Thank heavens March was a month of unusual highlights for the Hoedowners! On March 11th, Sally Duyck was given free rein to decorate whatever and where she wanted. The gal has more bits and bobs socked away and is never at a loss to fancy a place up. Thank you, we needed that! Did you see the picture of the contortionist? Tell us what you think.
On the 18th we did a visitation to the Sunset Promenaders for their Irish Fling Baked Potato Dance. The spuds and accompaniments were, as usual, wonderful. Did you notice that odd couple who appeared just as we were sitting down to eat? You know, the couple, with the pot bellies? I think the lady was wearing a hat covered with daisies. Someone called them Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, (aka Doug Morgan and Donnie Laas) hope you got a photo! Why were they too shy to dance?
On March 25th we had our Pizza Dance. The visual decorations were at a minimum, but the aromas were superb, mainly the scent of hot pizza, pepperoni, cheese, vegetarian, and combination. The tables in the dining room were full of dancers, resting their feet and doing the other thing they’re particularly good at, which is visiting. It was an evening for lingering over food and friendships.
May 13th is the day before Mother’s Day. Hoedowners chose the theme to “Dress Like Your Mother”. Scott Zinser will be calling with Randy Lewis cueing. Then on May 27th, in honor of Memorial Day, Hoedowners will be giving a flag dangle to those attending. Terry Halley will be calling with Randy Lewis cueing. Wear your “Red, White and Blue”.

March saw us celebrating our new members and in April we look forward to taking them to visit some other clubs and introducing them to the wide world of square dancing.
We are getting prepared for our 1st Anniversary dance. The original one was cancelled due to the lockdown. It will be on Saturday June 17th, 7-9.30pm at the Oak Hills gym and recreation room on NW 153rd Ave, Beaverton. It will be a mainstream dance with Mark Wheeler calling and Connie Clark cueing.
We do hope that lots of dancers will come and celebrate with us, there will be snacks and of course cake.
We are in the process of sending the flyer to all the TVC clubs, but the information is on our website, http://oakhillsquares.com/. (see link above)

Friday, May 12th will be our “Boxcar Boogie” dance and it includes a chili feed at the break. Craig Abercrombie is our caller and Susan Healea will cue this dance. We will go dark on May 27th for Memorial Day weekend.
R Square D dances begin with plus and intermediate rounds from 7:00 – 8:00 and mainstream dancing with phase II rounds from 8:00 – 9:30 PM. We dance at the Kelso Senior Center in Kelso, WA.
Our March meeting included the election of officers with the following results: President, Chris Poole; Vice President, Marv Pope; Secretary, Debbie Elliott; Treasurer, Goldie Worley. R Square D is very thankful and appreciative of outgoing Secretary Toni Carroll and outgoing Treasurer Pat Faires for their years of dedication and hard work on behalf of the club.

March was a fun month for us as mainstream dance classes were being held with a large and enthusiastic class! Thank you to all the angels who have been helping this class learn and practice. We also appreciate Darrell for being such a great teacher! Classes will be held through April. Some students have already joined the club and we are hoping to have more join and keep all of them active and engaged. Our March 18th dance "Irish Fling" was well attended with a baked potato bar after the dance. We are so excited with all the various clubs that attend our dances on a regular basis!
For current information, please see our website: http://sunsetpromenaders.com/. (see link above)

In May we’re visiting the Valley Squares for their 74th anniversary on the 5th. And we’ll have two dances of our own, “Fiesta Time” on the 12th, and “Hippie Hoedown” on the 26th. Both dances run from 7:00 to 9:30, with our caller Terry Halley plus our own returning cuer, Sandra Pinion who is back from maternity leave. Welcome back, Sandra!
